- 0:01I knew a man in Christ above 14 years ago.
- 0:04Whether in the body I cannot tell or whether out of the body
- 0:08I cannot tell. God knoweth such an one caught
- 0:12up to the 3rd heaven. How that he was caught up into
- 0:15paradise and heard unspeakable words, which is not lawful for a
- 0:19man to utter. Hey listeners, this is Nick from
- 0:22Scripture Central and today's podcast addresses the question,
- 0:25What did early Christians teach about the three degrees of
- 0:29Glory? On February 16th, 1832, Joseph
- 0:36Smith and Sidney Rigden had a wondrous vision while they were
- 0:39engaged in the inspired translation of the Bible in
- 0:42Hiram. OH, that vision.
- 0:45Since canonized as Doctrine and Covenant, Section 76
- 0:49dramatically revealed that there were multiple levels of heaven,
- 0:53each with their own glory. This system of heaven was
- 0:57completely at odds with modern conceptions of heaven and hell.
- 1:00However, while it may have been new to 19th century Christians,
- 1:04one might wonder if such a doctrine was present in the
- 1:07earliest teachings of the Christian Church.
- 1:10Significantly, as scholars have studied ancient texts,
- 1:14particularly those relating to ancient Judaism and
- 1:17Christianity, a similar picture to the one revealed to Joseph
- 1:20Smith emerges. Hugh Nibley was perhaps the
- 1:24first latter day St. scholar to seriously demonstrate how
- 1:27ancient texts pointed to this tiered view of heaven.
- 1:31For example, he observed how Christian texts such as the
- 1:35Pistus Sophia described how the multiple heavens are beyond the
- 1:39veil. Furthermore, only the qualified
- 1:43can pass by one of these veils until finally they enter the
- 1:47presence of God. This doctrine was also closely
- 1:51connected to the pre mortality of man and entailed our return
- 1:55to our heavenly home from whence we came to earth.
- 1:58Comparisons between Joseph Smith's revelations on the three
- 2:01degrees of glory and early Christian teachings likewise
- 2:05show considerable similarities. The Lord revealed to Joseph
- 2:09Smith, for example, that the three levels of heaven were
- 2:12comparable in glory to the sun, moon, and stars, each relating
- 2:17to the celestial, terrestrial, and telestial kingdoms,
- 2:21respectively. These three kingdoms of glory
- 2:25would be inhabited by those who had lived the laws required to
- 2:29enter therein, with the greatest of all blessings being available
- 2:33in the celestial Kingdom, where God dwells.
- 2:37A similar picture is found in Paul's first epistle to the
- 2:39Corinthians. In his defense of the
- 2:42resurrection, Paul states that there are also celestial bodies
- 2:46and bodies terrestrial, but the glory of the celestial is 1 and
- 2:51the glory of the terrestrial is another.
- 2:54In other words, just as there are differences in the physical
- 2:57bodies of mortal humans and animals, as discussed in verse
- 3:0139, there are also differences between mortal bodies and
- 3:06resurrected bodies. Furthermore, Paul taught that
- 3:10just as there are differences between mortal and resurrected
- 3:13bodies, not everyone would be filled with the same glory.
- 3:17In the resurrection there is there is one glory of the sun,
- 3:21another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars.
- 3:26For one star differs from another star in glory, so also
- 3:30is the resurrection of the dead. Many early Christians commented
- 3:34upon this verse, viewing it in terms of multiple glories in the
- 3:38resurrection. For example, John Chrysostom
- 3:41noted that although there is only one resurrection, there
- 3:44will be great differences of honor from one body to another,
- 3:48and that although they be all in God's Kingdom, all shall not
- 3:52enjoy the same reward. Similarly, Origin taught that
- 3:57this verse referred to the great difference among those who rise
- 4:01again in glory. Origin likewise taught that the
- 4:04differing levels of heavenly glories related to one's ability
- 4:08to dwell with God. The first two groups consisted
- 4:11of Saints and other righteous individuals.
- 4:15The most righteous are connected with the Father being part of
- 4:18Him, and next to these are those who have come to the Savior and
- 4:22take their stand entirely in Him.
- 4:25A third group of resurrected people would consist of those
- 4:29who never repented of idolatry in their lives, and yet a fourth
- 4:33would be reserved for those who have fallen away not only from
- 4:36the good itself, but from the very traces of it.
- 4:41This description matches what was revealed to Joseph Smith.
- 4:44Those in the celestial Kingdom would dwell in the presence of
- 4:47God and his Christ forever and ever.
- 4:51Those in the terrestrial Kingdom would receive of the presence of
- 4:55the Son, but not of the fullness of the Father, while those in
- 4:59the telestial Kingdom would not be able to receive either
- 5:03blessing. A fourth group who committed the
- 5:06unpardonable sin are also seen by Joseph Smith, who had denied
- 5:11the Holy Spirit after having received it, and having denied
- 5:15the only begotten Son of the Father, having crucified him
- 5:19unto themselves and put him to an open shame.
- 5:23Likewise, in Paul's second Epistle to the Corinthians, he
- 5:26mentions the time that he was caught up to the 3rd heaven,
- 5:29where he heard unspeakable words which it is not lawful for a man
- 5:34to utter. Scholars have long noted that
- 5:36this vision is consistent with a wide variety of early Jewish and
- 5:41Christian sources which note a visionary ascent to multiple
- 5:45levels of heaven where they are taught things never to be shared
- 5:49with those who were not initiated into the same
- 5:52ordinances they had experienced. As such, Paul's reference to at
- 5:57least three heavens fits neatly into both an ancient Christian
- 6:01theology and the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 6:05Other New Testament texts were likewise influential in the
- 6:08early Christian's view of heaven.
- 6:10For example, harkening back to the parable of the sower in
- 6:14Matthew 13, Irenaeus taught that there is this distinction
- 6:18between the habitation of those who produce an hundredfold and
- 6:22that of those who produce sixtyfold and that of those who
- 6:26produce thirtyfold. For the first will be taken up
- 6:29into the heavens, the second will dwell in paradise.
- 6:34The last will inhabit the city, and that was On this account the
- 6:37Lord declared in my Father's house, are many mansions.
- 6:43The spatial divisions of heaven into three distinct places based
- 6:46upon one's righteousness is likewise found in other early
- 6:50Christian texts, such as the Shepherd of Hermas or Apocryphon
- 6:55of John. Well, early Christians taught
- 6:57extensively about 3 levels of heaven, which Hugh Nibbley
- 7:00observed was often connected with the doctrines of baptism
- 7:04for the dead and Christ preaching in the world of
- 7:07spirits. Later generations of Christians
- 7:10came to reject such a robust plan of salvation, as Nibbley
- 7:14observed. The whole doctrine, certainly an
- 7:17important one, has no place in the teachings of the later
- 7:21churches, ignorant as they were of the great plan of universal
- 7:25salvation. The Lord would not leave such an
- 7:29important doctrine lost to history, However, as he revealed
- 7:32his great plan of salvation to ancient prophets, He restored
- 7:36that knowledge to Joseph Smith in a dramatic vision.
- 7:39Similarly, all Latter Day Saints can experience a similar vision
- 7:44retold through the temple endowment as we symbolically and
- 7:48ritually pass through the three heavens are taught unspeakable
- 7:53words which it is not lawful for a man to utter outside of the
- 7:57temple and finally symbolically enter the presence of God, just
- 8:02as was experienced by ancient prophets and disciples of
- 8:05Christ. Thank you for listening to this
