- 0:00There's a long history of debate about what we believe and how we
- 0:05know what we know. Science and religion have
- 0:09historically taken opposite positions in this debate.
- 0:13Science takes the view that the mind must be able to ascertain
- 0:17objective facts and draw conclusions based on them.
- 0:22This includes potentially developing hypotheses and
- 0:25testing them, discarding or modifying those that do not bear
- 0:29themselves out in the test. Science is therefore most
- 0:33comfortable with phenomena that are observable, or at least
- 0:38measurable as to their existence, their result, and
- 0:42their uses. They may not be able to see
- 0:46electricity, but they can validate its effects, channel
- 0:50it, and measure it. This approach limits, however,
- 0:54the ability of science to deal with deeper significance or
- 0:58first causes, or the purpose of our existence, as these quickly
- 1:03devolve into indistinct and somewhat contradictory
- 1:07assertions which science has been unable to prove.
- 1:11It is thus eventually left either in a state of agnosticism
- 1:16or in an appeal to faith at some ultimate level.
- 1:22Religion, on the other hand, has taken its stance in the field of
- 1:26what is called faith. Faith has been generally
- 1:29dismissed by science as not being subject to proof.
- 1:33This leaves a wide field for claims to be made, many of which
- 1:37can be demonstrated to simply be inaccurate.
- 1:41For instance, it was a doctrine of faith in the Western world
- 1:45for many centuries that the sun revolved around the earth.
- 1:50When scientists began to assert facts and proofs that concluded
- 1:54that the earth actually was not the center of the universe but
- 1:58itself rotated around the sun, they were ostracized, penalized,
- 2:05tortured, and made to retract their facts to preserve what we
- 2:09now know was an entirely misplaced application of faith.
- 2:15There is a role for faith, just as there is a role for the
- 2:19mind's action in its search for truth through the mental powers.
- 2:24Once we recognize that the mind has its own limitations and that
- 2:28knowledge is progressive, we can begin to accept that there are
- 2:32forms of knowledge which rely on senses, intuitions and methods
- 2:39which are not based in the mental activity, and which thus
- 2:43rise up within us in such a way that we call it faith.
- 2:49Faith in its deepest sense is not faith in a particular
- 2:52doctrine, teaching, book, teacher, or modality.
- 2:58Rather, it is the deepest sense of the soul identity, espousing
- 3:03and expressing its innate, deeper knowledge through its
- 3:07connection with the divine and the divine reality.
- 3:11Once we understand that faith is not the same as dogma and that
- 3:16we need not suppress, torture or be fearful of the mind's
- 3:20approach to knowledge, we can find the harmonious interplay of
- 3:24both aspects of our being. Whereby faith brings us to a
- 3:29knowledge that lies outside the mental range at present, and the
- 3:34mind works to consolidate and organize this knowledge as it
- 3:39becomes available to us. We take an article of faith and
- 3:44focus intensely on it until it reveals its deepest secrets to
- 3:48us. What starts out as faith may
- 3:52indeed turn into fact over time. This is particularly true when
- 3:58the soul awakens to the deeper realities of existence and
- 4:02begins to understand things that the mind cannot define with its
- 4:06narrow and limited capabilities, Triorobindo notes quote.
- 4:13Faith is the soul's witness to something not yet manifested,
- 4:17achieved, or realized, but which yet the knower within us, even
- 4:22in the absence of all indications, feels to be true or
- 4:26supremely worth following or achieving.
- 4:30This thing within us can last even when there is no fixed
- 4:33belief in the mind, even when the vital struggles and revolts
- 4:37and refuses. Who is there that practices the
- 4:41yoga and has not his periods, long periods of disappointment
- 4:46and failure and disbelief and darkness.
- 4:50But there is something that sustains him and even goes on in
- 4:54spite of himself, because it feels that what it followed
- 4:58after was yet true, and it more than feels it knows The
- 5:04fundamental faith in yoga. Is this inherent in the soul,
- 5:10that the divine exists and the Divine is the one thing to be
- 5:14followed after? Nothing else in life is worth
- 5:17having in comparison with that. So long as a man has that faith,
- 5:23he is marked for the spiritual life.
- 5:26And I will say that even if his nature is full of obstacles and
- 5:31crammed with denials and difficulties, and even if he has
- 5:35many years of struggle, he is marked out for success in the
- 5:39spiritual life. It is this faith that you need
- 5:43to develop, a faith which is in accordance with reason and
- 5:47common sense, that if the Divine exists and has called you to the
- 5:52path, as is evident, then there must be a Divine guidance behind
- 5:57and through and in spite of all difficulties.
- 6:00You will arrive not to listen to the hostile voices that suggest
- 6:05failure, or to the voices of impatient vital haste that echo
- 6:09them. Not to believe that because
- 6:12great difficulties are there, there can be no success, or that
- 6:17because the Divine has not yet shown himself, he will never
- 6:20show himself but to take the position that everyone takes
- 6:25when he fixes his mind on a great and difficult goal.
- 6:29I will go on till I succeed, all difficulties notwithstanding, to
- 6:35which the belief in the Divine adds the Divine exists.
- 6:40My following after the Divine cannot fail.
- 6:44I will go on through everything till I find Him.
