- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on Sport and State.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Good morning to you. Happy start of the week. Alongside
- 0:05Speaker 1: Chad Withrow, I'm Jonathan Hutton. This is Hutton and Withrow,
- 0:08Speaker 1: sportandstate.com and streaming wherever you consume your social media and
- 0:14Speaker 1: audio podcast, all of it.
- 0:16Speaker 2: We are presented by Hard Rock Bet. Chad, good morning, man.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning, Hutton.
- 0:20Speaker 3: I can't put into proper words and context just how
- 0:24Speaker 3: much I am thirsty and starved for a college football
- 0:28Speaker 3: Saturday at home.
- 0:29Speaker 2: At some point.
- 0:31Speaker 3: We have been road warriors, both you and I, the
- 0:33Speaker 3: past two weeks. And this week, my daughter had a
- 0:36Speaker 3: softball tournament all day, so I got to see very
- 0:39Speaker 3: little other than the highlight shows. I did, on my phone,
- 0:43Speaker 3: watch Tennessee and Auburn, which we're about to talk about,
- 0:46Speaker 3: throughout the tournament.
- 0:47Speaker 2: But other than that, it's hard to watch much.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I can't wait just to be planted on a couch
- 0:51Speaker 3: hut and watching college football on my quad box on
- 0:53Speaker 3: YouTube TV all from start to finish on a Saturday.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And it's going to have to wait because I'll be
- 0:58Speaker 3: on the road next Saturday also as I drive for
- 1:01Speaker 3: fall break.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I know exactly what you're looking for. You want to
- 1:04Speaker 1: start with college game day. That's what you do. And
- 1:06Speaker 1: watch it all the way through the final SEC game,
- 1:10Speaker 1: pretty much. I mean, you would come in whenever we're
- 1:13Speaker 1: doing 180, you would come in and be like, yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 1: I watched it all.
- 1:16Speaker 2: The way through the SEC Network, all of it. So,
- 1:19Speaker 2: You want to veg out is what you want.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I smoked some wings yesterday for the NFL games. I
- 1:23Speaker 3: thought you said weed for a second. I could mix
- 1:26Speaker 3: in some pellet grill smoking, you know, if needed, Hutton.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I mean, I could do that also. But for the
- 1:32Speaker 3: most part, you know, I want to be planted and
- 1:33Speaker 3: I want to get up and, you know, move around. So,
- 1:36Speaker 3: you know, blood clots don't set in as I watch
- 1:39Speaker 3: football every now and again. And that's just what I
- 1:41Speaker 3: want to do throughout the day. And I have not
- 1:42Speaker 3: had a chance to do that. since I think week two? No,
- 1:45Speaker 3: week one of the college football season was the last
- 1:48Speaker 3: time I was able to plant and watch the whole time.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I'm not complaining. I love the Dixieland Delight Friday night.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I love having activities and all that, but I'd love
- 1:56Speaker 3: to get back.
- 1:56Speaker 1: To just watching football start to finish. Are you having
- 1:58Speaker 1: that this upcoming weekend? Because we'll be on the road
- 2:01Speaker 1: in two weeks, right?
- 2:02Speaker 2: We will.
- 2:03Speaker 3: We will be in Knoxville in two weeks for Tennessee
- 2:05Speaker 3: and Alabama. Oh, boy, we need to talk about both
- 2:07Speaker 3: of those teams after this past week.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But, no, we'll be driving to the beach. Oh, that's right.
- 2:15Speaker 3: So the plan is we're going to leave early enough
- 2:17Speaker 3: on Saturday where I will arrive in time to watch
- 2:20Speaker 3: the late afternoon games. So 2.30 or 3, I'll be
- 2:22Speaker 3: watching football from that point on at the beach.
- 2:25Speaker 1: But I'll miss the early games driving. All right, let's
- 2:28Speaker 1: start with Tennessee. The Vols, they get the victory. But
- 2:32Speaker 1: they benched the quarterback.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I'm curious.
- 2:35Speaker 1: They sit Faison Brandon. And from your perspective, Chad, you're
- 2:39Speaker 1: seeing this happen and play out on your phone. What
- 2:41Speaker 1: are you thinking in real time?
- 2:43Speaker 3: So what I'm thinking in real time is Texas broke
- 2:47Speaker 3: Faison Brandon. I mean, that's my honest reaction to it.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I'm like, this kid may never recover. Because I'm watching
- 2:56Speaker 3: that game to start. And there's two things here, okay?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Not just that he was very, very poor in his decision-making,
- 3:04Speaker 3: in his processing, in just simple things like don't throw
- 3:07Speaker 3: a screen eight yards behind the receiver.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That causes a fumble opportunity for the other team that
- 3:14Speaker 2: goes out of bounds, but you lose, what, 10, 12 yards? Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 3: On first down? I mean, he could not get out
- 3:20Speaker 3: of his way. And look, I'm sympathetic because, I mean,
- 3:23Speaker 3: he got sacked 10 times. I think he got hit
- 3:25Speaker 3: 23 times was the number. Like legitimately hit on either
- 3:29Speaker 3: a run play, getting hit as he threw the football,
- 3:31Speaker 3: or sacked. And got hit hard against Texas. You said
- 3:35Speaker 3: Texas broke him. I would say Heupel would have.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Because I came in last Monday and said, I didn't
- 3:41Speaker 1: understand the game plan and the play calling for what
- 3:44Speaker 1: the quarterback was doing.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I didn't understand any of it.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I don't understand the start of the game where I
- 3:51Speaker 3: think seven of the first 11 plays were passes. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: I know there were some short passes in there and
- 3:56Speaker 3: things to try to get him in rhythm and all that,
- 3:57Speaker 3: which that really didn't work out. I mean, he had
- 4:00Speaker 3: zero yards passing after completing passes to start that game.
- 4:04Speaker 2: And then the interception.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Happens where that is clearly, and I've been screaming that
- 4:09Speaker 3: the whole time, Do something to boot him out and
- 4:12Speaker 3: give him one or two options where he's seeing only
- 4:14Speaker 3: half the field. Cut the field in half. Don't make
- 4:16Speaker 3: him sit and go through the entire progression because he's
- 4:19Speaker 3: lost doing that. He's breaking off of guys too quickly
- 4:22Speaker 3: that are about to break open or are breaking open.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Then he's going to someone who's covered or he's hesitating
- 4:28Speaker 3: to throw it when he sees someone is coming open.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And that again, and by the way, I think Louis
- 4:33Speaker 3: Riddick is terrific on color. And he nailed it right away.
- 4:36Speaker 3: He's like, you've got to throw this thing right now.
- 4:38Speaker 3: The play call is there. The design is there.
- 4:41Speaker 2: The defensive look is there. Just throw the football towards
- 4:43Speaker 2: the boundary and get you an easy 10-yard completion on
- 4:46Speaker 2: this play. But he waits, he waits, he waits.
- 4:49Speaker 3: And Auburn is sitting right there reading it and is
- 4:51Speaker 3: able to undercut it and get the interception.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I thought it was the right decision by Josh Heupel.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I thought it was a ballsy decision right before half
- 4:58Speaker 3: to put in the backup quarterback at the one-yard line.
- 5:00Speaker 3: where he took over after the punt from Auburn or
- 5:03Speaker 3: after Tennessee accidentally took a knee on the kickoff and.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Got backed up. But, I mean, look, there's a lot
- 5:11Speaker 2: of factors that go into it.
- 5:13Speaker 3: He's an 18-year-old freshman that I don't think practiced a
- 5:16Speaker 3: lot and got a lot of reps based off the
- 5:18Speaker 3: injury he suffered against Texas. He clearly was not ready
- 5:21Speaker 3: to play that football game. If I'm going to second-guess
- 5:24Speaker 3: Josh Heupel, and I will on a couple of other
- 5:26Speaker 3: fronts on this whole thing, I would say if you
- 5:30Speaker 3: were confident enough to go to George McIntyre on that
- 5:33Speaker 3: series late in the first half and knew that something
- 5:36Speaker 3: was off with your quarterback, maybe start George McIntyre. Maybe
- 5:39Speaker 3: the game after Texas is a good time to give
- 5:41Speaker 3: him a break if he's a little banged up.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Let him heal up. Let him watch on the sideline.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I could tell a series into that game, this kid
- 5:49Speaker 3: needs to go watch this game on the sideline. He
- 5:51Speaker 3: needs to take a break right now for a minute
- 5:53Speaker 3: and go watch things and see if he can slow
- 5:56Speaker 3: down a little bit for him as he watches and
- 5:58Speaker 3: isn't thrown.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Into that SEC fire. That's what I thought in the moment.
- 6:03Speaker 2: That's what I think now.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But I think George McIntyre handled himself beautifully when he
- 6:07Speaker 3: came into that game. He did exactly what Tennessee needed.
- 6:09Speaker 2: He settled things down for that offense, and he let
- 6:12Speaker 2: Deshaun Bishop go to work.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So I'm making a note because I'm going to get
- 6:16Speaker 1: back to something on the freshman, on Faison Brandon. But
- 6:20Speaker 1: let's go to McIntyre. My theory on this, when he
- 6:24Speaker 1: came in and started playing well, I told someone, I said,
- 6:27Speaker 1: here this goes again. Heupel goes to the backup, and
- 6:29Speaker 1: the backup ends up taking over the job. Felt like
- 6:33Speaker 1: Hendon Hooker, Joe Milton, a little bit. I had the
- 6:36Speaker 1: same thought when he started moving the ball. That 42-yard completion,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'm thinking, here we go. My theory is he doesn't
- 6:43Speaker 1: practice very well. That was the whole thing about Hooker.
- 6:47Speaker 1: He just didn't practice well.
- 6:49Speaker 2: We heard that.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Back in camp, they were trying to manufacture some kind
- 6:55Speaker 1: of quarterback battle, but it doesn't feel like that was
- 6:57Speaker 1: actually the case, right? I just don't think he practices
- 7:00Speaker 1: very well, but in the game, he can certainly come
- 7:02Speaker 1: in and get the job done. He was better than
- 7:05Speaker 1: just a backup quarterback is what I saw. And look,
- 7:09Speaker 1: you're getting into the heart of the schedule now. And
- 7:12Speaker 1: going back to Faison Brannan, Early in the season, we
- 7:15Speaker 1: saw it from Georgia Tech on, well, even prior to that,
- 7:18Speaker 1: but Georgia Tech, very composed. I thought he handles things well, Chad,
- 7:24Speaker 1: for his age and how long he's been on campus.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and Faison Brandon also, there's a video that circulated.
- 7:32Speaker 2: We have it here. We're going to play it for
- 7:33Speaker 2: you because it's him going to greet his family.
- 7:35Speaker 3: And I thought he, even in the locker room, you
- 7:37Speaker 3: could see him smiling and celebrating with George McIntyre when
- 7:39Speaker 3: he got a game ball.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I do think that he handled it.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And I'll say it, the word that for years and
- 7:45Speaker 3: years was a cuss word in the NCAA. He handled
- 7:48Speaker 3: it professionally. These guys are professionals, even if they're only
- 7:52Speaker 3: 18 years old. He's a multimillionaire.
- 7:54Speaker 2: At Tennessee right now with the NIL deal he signed, right?
- 7:57Speaker 3: He's handling it professionally because that's how he has to
- 7:59Speaker 3: handle it because he's getting paid a lot of money.
- 8:01Speaker 3: George McIntyre's getting paid a lot of money to be
- 8:03Speaker 3: the backup.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Now he's going to be getting.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Paid a lot of money to be the starter until
- 8:06Speaker 3: he gets hurt or starts screwing up. But they're going
- 8:09Speaker 3: to go back to Brandon. We have not seen the
- 8:11Speaker 3: end of him this season. He's going to be the
- 8:13Speaker 3: starter again. He's going to play again, I believe, at
- 8:15Speaker 3: some point because the nature of this beast is that
- 8:18Speaker 3: McIntyre will either struggle mightily in a game the way
- 8:21Speaker 3: Brandon has. He's going to get hit hard. and have
- 8:23Speaker 3: to come out of a game, and Faison Brandon's going
- 8:25Speaker 3: to have to reenter. So it's certainly not all is
- 8:28Speaker 3: lost for Faison Brandon. But here is Brandon, and listen
- 8:32Speaker 3: closely as he's greeted by his family. You can hear
- 8:35Speaker 3: his dad hints at what may have been wrong with
- 8:38Speaker 3: him going into that game.
- 9:01Speaker 2: So, Chad, tell me what was said based on the
- 9:03Speaker 2: video that you have. Yeah, basically, you know what it is.
- 9:09Speaker 2: You're banged up. Keep your head up coming into this game.
- 9:12Speaker 2: He was not 100%.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I mean, I thought he broke his collarbone against Texas.
- 9:16Speaker 3: He's holding his arm like a guy who broke his collarbone.
- 9:18Speaker 3: He goes to the locker room, and I'm thinking he's
- 9:20Speaker 3: going to be out for an extended period of time.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Clearly it's not a break, but it's an injury to
- 9:24Speaker 3: his shoulder. And I'm listening to a podcast. I'm reading
- 9:29Speaker 3: about it all week, and it's like, hey, he's not
- 9:31Speaker 3: on the injury report, but he is banged up going
- 9:34Speaker 3: into this game, and they kept him off that, so
- 9:36Speaker 3: he was going to start.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I just think it's a mix of everything.
- 9:39Speaker 3: He didn't have a lot of prep time on the
- 9:41Speaker 3: field in practice because of the injury and treatment that
- 9:44Speaker 3: he's in. He's not accustomed to that, certainly at this level,
- 9:48Speaker 3: with an SEC defense.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Auburn's got a good defense.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Their offense is a train wreck under Alex Golish right now,
- 9:54Speaker 3: but their defense is really good. I think a good
- 9:57Speaker 3: SEC defense, not great, but when they prep for you
- 10:00Speaker 3: and they know what you're going to do and you've
- 10:01Speaker 3: got Alex Golish as the head coach who knows exactly
- 10:03Speaker 3: what Josh Heupel is going to do, it was this
- 10:06Speaker 3: concoction that mixed together to completely wreck his day. Josh Heupel,
- 10:12Speaker 3: I will give him credit, he didn't sit there and
- 10:15Speaker 3: mess around. He didn't say, well, let's give the kid
- 10:17Speaker 3: another chance. He saw how bad it was on that interception,
- 10:20Speaker 3: and he went quickly to George McIntyre, and it saved
- 10:22Speaker 3: the day. Because for the first time in that game,
- 10:25Speaker 3: Auburn had to respect the pass.
- 10:26Speaker 2: He hit a couple of passes. And once they respected
- 10:29Speaker 2: the pass, what happened?
- 10:30Speaker 3: Deshaun Bishop has a record day for 220 yards rushing,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and they got the ground game going the way Tennessee
- 10:37Speaker 3: wants to. They can win a lot of games with
- 10:39Speaker 3: that formula. I mean, George McIntyre was 8 for 10
- 10:42Speaker 3: for 86 yards. That's a fine stat line for a
- 10:46Speaker 3: Tennessee football team in a game from the quarterback right
- 10:48Speaker 3: now based off what that offense is.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And you've got to defend those two quarterbacks in a
- 10:52Speaker 1: different way. The game plan changes ever so slightly. You
- 10:56Speaker 1: can still run the ball effectively. which is what Tennessee
- 10:59Speaker 1: does well. But when it comes to the receivers, as
- 11:02Speaker 1: long as the receivers show up and they're professional, going
- 11:06Speaker 1: back to the way you described Faison Brandon, they can
- 11:10Speaker 1: move the football well in this. I thought it saved
- 11:13Speaker 1: the game. Auburn's not great by any means, but I've
- 11:20Speaker 1: I could see another turnover happening.
- 11:23Speaker 2: There is no doubt, Hutton. No doubt.
- 11:25Speaker 3: They don't win that. They lose that game if Faison
- 11:27Speaker 3: Brandon continues to play.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And I think Heupel chose that moment to put the
- 11:31Speaker 1: backup in against his own goal because there's a chance
- 11:35Speaker 1: there that Brandon hangs onto the ball too long or something.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And it goes awry and he takes a safety. That
- 11:43Speaker 1: was my theory on it, but you don't want to
- 11:48Speaker 1: put your back up in that situation. That just tells
- 11:50Speaker 1: you that Heupel, maybe he wanted to do exactly what
- 11:54Speaker 1: you said. It's like, man, he just doesn't have it today.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Gave him another drive or two, and then you had
- 11:58Speaker 1: to put him in. Let's also note, my prediction came
- 12:02Speaker 1: true during that game. The moment Tennessee looks like hell
- 12:05Speaker 1: in the game, everyone's going to start talking about the uniforms.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Get rid of these shitty gray uniforms. What is that helmet?
- 12:12Speaker 2: Get it out of here.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I never want to see these again. Throw it in
- 12:15Speaker 3: a trash pile and burn them. Why are we not
- 12:17Speaker 3: wearing our traditional uniforms? I'm getting texts from buddies that
- 12:21Speaker 3: are like, I never want to see this helmet or
- 12:23Speaker 3: these uniforms again. I'm at the softball tournament. My Florida
- 12:25Speaker 3: Gator dad who's there is like, what are these helmets
- 12:28Speaker 3: Tennessee's wearing?
- 12:29Speaker 2: And I tried to.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Explain it was to honor General Neyland. Hey, credit Tennessee
- 12:33Speaker 3: for honoring General Neyland. by running the single wing for
- 12:37Speaker 3: an entire game. I mean, I'm watching that first half,
- 12:40Speaker 3: and I'm thinking, there is no better way than to
- 12:43Speaker 3: honor General Nealon by both Tennessee and Auburn coming out
- 12:45Speaker 3: and trying to run the single wing from 1938 against
- 12:49Speaker 3: each other in that game.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Also, the game maxims.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I mean, this was actually the perfect General Nealon tribute game.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Number one, the team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Tennessee made fewer mistakes. Play for and make the breaks
- 13:02Speaker 3: when one comes your way.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Score, Tennessee.
- 13:06Speaker 3: After a big fourth down turnover, they go and score
- 13:09Speaker 3: and put the game away. Protect our kickers, our quarterback,
- 13:13Speaker 3: our lead in our ball game. Press the kicking game.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Here is where the breaks are made. That is maxim
- 13:18Speaker 3: number six. How about Jackson Ross? Five times inside the
- 13:21Speaker 3: 10-yard line. pinning Auburn deep. It was an old school
- 13:26Speaker 3: smash mouth. No one has a good offense. No one
- 13:28Speaker 3: has a good quarterback. Let's try to pin the other
- 13:31Speaker 3: team deep type of game for really about two and
- 13:33Speaker 3: a half, three quarters of that game. Auburn got going late.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Tennessee missed a couple tackles. Byron Brown had that 70
- 13:39Speaker 3: plus yard run. They got it going a little bit
- 13:42Speaker 3: when Tennessee went a little bit more lax defensively. But
- 13:45Speaker 3: I will say this on the positive side, even without
- 13:48Speaker 3: Quay Moss, who arguably, it's either him or Xavier Gilliam
- 13:51Speaker 3: as the best players on Tennessee's defense, even without him,
- 13:55Speaker 3: Tennessee's defense is a great SEC defense. I think it's
- 13:58Speaker 3: top four or five in the league. And his replacement,
- 14:01Speaker 3: Tevis Metcalf, gets the interception in the game.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I mean, they've been playing very well.
- 14:06Speaker 1: The whole talk about whether or not they would pick
- 14:08Speaker 1: up on the scheme in year one is out the door.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I mean, it's going very well based on that change.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Heupel's made good decisions with that. He's made The smart
- 14:17Speaker 1: decision with McIntyre. Chad, I do wonder, just on Auburn's stance,
- 14:25Speaker 1: the whole Baylor game to start the year. I'm watching
- 14:29Speaker 1: Baylor this weekend. I'm like, man, the two teams don't
- 14:32Speaker 1: look anything like the way that game finished. It was
- 14:37Speaker 1: the defense that got that done, too. Or you make
- 14:39Speaker 1: an accurate pass and you lead your receiver and you
- 14:41Speaker 1: win that game for Baylor. Point being, we would think
- 14:47Speaker 1: a little bit less about this on Auburn's end and
- 14:50Speaker 1: more about the way Tennessee played had they also lost
- 14:52Speaker 1: that game, too.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I'm also watching Vandy.
- 14:56Speaker 3: And even with a backup quarterback, they got beat the
- 15:00Speaker 3: way we thought they would eventually. And it was never
- 15:02Speaker 3: really that close, but They were respectable against Georgia, and
- 15:05Speaker 3: I'm thinking that's a great win for Auburn when they
- 15:07Speaker 3: beat Vandy the week before because that Auburn team that
- 15:09Speaker 3: I saw, again, good defensively.
- 15:11Speaker 2: They got some dudes on defense. And they hit that
- 15:13Speaker 2: big play early and tied the game or whatever. Like, yeah, yeah.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Offense just is not there right now for Alex Golish.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Also on Josh Heupel, his clock management is awful, and
- 15:25Speaker 3: it's inexcusable. I like Josh Heupel. I think he's a
- 15:29Speaker 3: good leader. I think that was a good decision to
- 15:31Speaker 3: go away from Faison. Brandon paid off in a win.
- 15:34Speaker 3: It also showed just how important that game was. If
- 15:36Speaker 3: Tennessee was going to sustain any hope of being in
- 15:38Speaker 3: a college football playoff discussion, that he went that quickly.
- 15:41Speaker 3: He had the quick trigger with his quarterback to go
- 15:43Speaker 3: to the backup because he knew they had to win
- 15:45Speaker 3: that game at home against his former mentee in Alex Golish.
- 15:50Speaker 3: But that end of half clock management combined with last
- 15:54Speaker 3: week to end the Texas game after they get the
- 15:56Speaker 3: onside kick, It's atrocious. And Tennessee is top five or
- 16:01Speaker 3: ten in every resource given in college football, whether that
- 16:04Speaker 3: be fan base investment, home field atmosphere, which was terrific.
- 16:09Speaker 3: All day on Saturday, causing a ton of false starts
- 16:11Speaker 3: and issues for Auburn.
- 16:13Speaker 2: There was a true advantage there. Absolutely. Player NIL investment
- 16:18Speaker 2: on the roster. Yep.
- 16:19Speaker 3: A $ 9 million coach in Josh Heupel, a $ 2- plus.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Million defensive coordinator who's the head coach of the defense.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Heupel doesn't mess with the defense much. He wanted Jim
- 16:28Speaker 2: Knowles to run it.
- 16:29Speaker 3: He's over there looking at plays in the tablet with
- 16:31Speaker 3: his offense while Jim Knowles and the defense is going
- 16:34Speaker 3: to work out there.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Got to be better, man.
- 16:37Speaker 3: I don't care if you've got two analytics nerds next
- 16:40Speaker 3: to you helping you with pace and decision-making quickly in
- 16:44Speaker 3: the moment. Tennessee's clock management has been bad for a
- 16:48Speaker 3: while now, and it was bad again at the end
- 16:50Speaker 3: of that half. That's just the one thing that I
- 16:52Speaker 3: watch with Heupel that he's not gotten fixed is that
- 16:55Speaker 3: he is going to have to be better with. And
- 16:58Speaker 3: I know that he didn't get out of bounds and
- 16:59Speaker 3: it was a play design to get out of bounds.
- 17:01Speaker 3: They have a field goal attempt if he does it,
- 17:03Speaker 3: but you've got to be better to not put yourself
- 17:06Speaker 3: in that situation. They let about 17 seconds tick off
- 17:08Speaker 3: the clock at one point in between plays that was
- 17:11Speaker 3: completely needless.
- 17:13Speaker 2: So he sticks with McIntyre this week, right? Got to.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I mean, they didn't even put Brandon on the injury report,
- 17:22Speaker 1: you said. So I don't know. I mean, that's not,
- 17:25Speaker 1: to me, the dad can talk about, we got some
- 17:27Speaker 1: going on. That's all fair. He got beat up. He
- 17:32Speaker 1: was beat up in that game against Texas.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I think the challenge now in college football in 2026
- 17:37Speaker 3: that everybody's going to point to is, and I started
- 17:40Speaker 3: seeing this already, hey, Faison Brandon just transferred to Georgia.
- 17:44Speaker 2: When he got pulled.
- 17:46Speaker 3: The moment he got pulled, it's like he's looking around thinking, okay, well,
- 17:49Speaker 3: they don't believe in me here.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Where are we going to go?
- 17:52Speaker 3: George McIntyre is the example to follow.
- 17:54Speaker 2: The dude was disappointed. He didn't win the job.
- 17:57Speaker 3: He's a year older than Brandon. He literally didn't sit
- 17:59Speaker 3: around and sulk and refuse to get any better. He
- 18:03Speaker 3: continued to do his job. He continued to take those paychecks.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Also, by the way, to be the backup. And when
- 18:09Speaker 2: he got his opportunity, full marks. He was ready. He
- 18:11Speaker 2: made the most of it.
- 18:12Speaker 3: I believe Faison Brandon will handle it the same way.
- 18:15Speaker 3: I do think he's banged up. I think this helps
- 18:16Speaker 3: him to relax. Hutton, I will be completely and utterly
- 18:20Speaker 3: shocked if George McIntyre is not the starting quarterback at Arkansas.
- 18:23Speaker 3: And it has nothing to do with the health of
- 18:25Speaker 3: Faison Brandon. You now ride the hot hand. This was
- 18:28Speaker 3: always a possibility. You get in the year and you
- 18:30Speaker 3: just ride the hot hand.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Whoever's playing the best that week. This is a week-to-week league.
- 18:34Speaker 2: We're going to do a full SEC breakdown today.
- 18:36Speaker 3: And it will show you what we've said from before
- 18:39Speaker 3: this season kicked off. It is week to week. Every
- 18:42Speaker 3: week is a totally different story than the week before.
- 18:45Speaker 3: We've seen these wild shifts. from one week to the
- 18:47Speaker 3: next with all these really good teams. So you have
- 18:50Speaker 3: got to keep your powder dry, and you've got to
- 18:52Speaker 3: see who's got the hot hand each week and ride
- 18:54Speaker 3: that player. So now you ride McIntyre, the way he
- 18:57Speaker 3: played in that game, and finish that football game.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Go with him to Fayetteville. See how it goes. And
- 19:03Speaker 2: if he's bad, go back to Faison Brandon. You've already
- 19:06Speaker 2: done it once. You can do it again.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I like two final points, and we can hit to
- 19:12Speaker 1: some other topics here. But I agree. Also, I think
- 19:15Speaker 1: it's the perfect opponent. going into the Bama week in Fayetteville,
- 19:21Speaker 1: just because.
- 19:24Speaker 2: It's not a.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Pay game where you're going to win 60-0, and you
- 19:28Speaker 1: can actually get some things evaluated and get some things
- 19:30Speaker 1: on film for your backup quarterback you started the season
- 19:32Speaker 1: with who has played well. Now we see him rebound
- 19:35Speaker 1: off of it. Number two, man, what a moment that
- 19:39Speaker 1: weekend's going to be against Bama. If both teams come
- 19:43Speaker 1: into that, taking care of business this upcoming week, Tennessee
- 19:47Speaker 1: has a chance to.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Really jump You mentioned the week-to-week league. There is a
- 19:52Speaker 2: huge moment here.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And we should mark this down whenever he made the
- 19:57Speaker 1: change at quarterback to what.
- 19:59Speaker 2: This could lead to.
- 20:00Speaker 1: It could also lead to quarterback coming back in. But Chad,
- 20:03Speaker 1: we always look at it from the downside. If you
- 20:05Speaker 1: look at the upside, this is a moment to write
- 20:07Speaker 1: down and remember for when things were saved for the
- 20:13Speaker 1: chances of the playoff. But beyond that, a chance to
- 20:17Speaker 1: really jump not just into the top ten, but higher.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and look, they still have Arkansas left. Arkansas does
- 20:24Speaker 3: not look like a good football.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Team at all. Tennessee's a two-touchdown-plus favorite. That's why I
- 20:29Speaker 2: like the matchup. And he'll be ready.
- 20:35Speaker 1: But it's not just some game where you just walk
- 20:38Speaker 1: into and you know you already won the game.
- 20:40Speaker 3: This is a good first SEC road trip because it's
- 20:44Speaker 3: also one where if you get up two scores on Arkansas,
- 20:47Speaker 3: that place will vacate the stadium. There will be no
- 20:49Speaker 3: atmosphere there because they're already boycotting.
- 20:52Speaker 2: The team at Arkansas.
- 20:54Speaker 3: It may not be a great atmosphere to start, which
- 20:56Speaker 3: is great news for George McIntyre. You don't want to
- 20:59Speaker 3: step into a snake pit. Tennessee as a program has
- 21:01Speaker 3: been bad in Fayetteville. I just think you're going to
- 21:03Speaker 3: have to see a sizable step up from Arkansas and
- 21:06Speaker 3: a sizable step down from Tennessee for this to be
- 21:09Speaker 3: a one-score game.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Tennessee's way better.
- 21:11Speaker 1: This is where Nico couldn't take the jump. you know,
- 21:14Speaker 1: it was at Arkansas at that moment.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Yep.
- 21:15Speaker 3: It's where Nico ran out of bounds, the 20 yard
- 21:18Speaker 3: final play of the game. So thrown in, which again,
- 21:20Speaker 3: I'll go back phase on Brandon one points with me.
- 21:22Speaker 3: And then in that final play against Texas, he threw
- 21:25Speaker 3: the ball into the end zone, knowing that was their
- 21:27Speaker 3: only shot at victory.
- 21:28Speaker 2: And the clock was out.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I'm like, that is some good awareness. He also didn't
- 21:31Speaker 3: throw it out of the back of the end zone.
- 21:33Speaker 3: He put it right in the middle of the end
- 21:34Speaker 3: zone to at least give his guy a chance to,
- 21:36Speaker 3: to win the game.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Speaking of end zones, the Titans had a chance, uh,
- 21:40Speaker 1: with four straight plays to, uh, to get into the
- 21:44Speaker 1: end zone. And they did not put the ball into
- 21:47Speaker 1: Cam Ward's throwing arm. They decided to run the football.
- 21:50Speaker 1: What does that mean? And what do we think of
- 21:52Speaker 1: Cam Ward's performance overall? It was another loss. 0-4 are
- 21:57Speaker 1: the Titans. The Ravens get it done. But where are
- 22:02Speaker 1: we headed with all of this? We discuss straight ahead
- 22:05Speaker 1: here on Hutton & Withrow. Brand new offer right now

- 23:28Speaker 1: It is clear that Brian Dable and the Titans, inside
- 23:36Speaker 1: of the game yesterday, which was clearly the Ravens are
- 23:38Speaker 1: going to win that game. Zay Flowers is going off.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson could have thrown. He could have named his
- 23:45Speaker 1: passing yardage in the second half if he wanted to play.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I mean, he put up 222. That's what Cam Ward
- 23:53Speaker 1: had for the game.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Do you think he could have played had he really
- 23:57Speaker 3: wanted to?
- 23:58Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Ultimately, I think this was Jesse Minter saying, we're going
- 24:05Speaker 1: to win this game, let's make sure Lamar's good to go,
- 24:07Speaker 1: and let's just put Huntley in and run the football,
- 24:11Speaker 1: slow down the game, and get out of here with
- 24:14Speaker 1: a W. There is zero threat with that Titans offense
- 24:17Speaker 1: to be consistent.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I was talking last night, Chad.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I was like, I was actually very surprised, very surprised
- 24:26Speaker 1: that they followed up after the interception last week. Cam
- 24:32Speaker 1: Ward on the second pass attempt has a interception yesterday.
- 24:36Speaker 1: And Ravens go and get the touchdown. Then they follow
- 24:40Speaker 1: that up with a touchdown drive. I was shocked, quite honestly.
- 24:45Speaker 1: They did that well, but they don't do anything consistently well.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Cam Ward doesn't do anything consistent except being inconsistent. And
- 24:55Speaker 1: that's why they turn around and hand the football off
- 24:58Speaker 1: as much as they do whenever they're getting close to
- 25:00Speaker 1: the end zone. There is no doubt in my mind,
- 25:02Speaker 1: last week played a factor in yesterday.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Well, and you look at Cam Ward's numbers, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 2: he's 20 for 31, 222, a touchdown, an interception. and
- 25:13Speaker 2: you think, okay, it's.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Sort of pedestrian for an NFL quarterback, but it is
- 25:17Speaker 3: an improvement based on some of the numbers we've seen
- 25:19Speaker 3: from him. But you really look inside of that, and
- 25:23Speaker 3: the way the game was managed, it's 24-7 at halftime.
- 25:27Speaker 3: We just said it. Tyler Huntley comes in. Lamar Jackson
- 25:30Speaker 3: could have played. It's a blowout if Lamar Jackson plays
- 25:33Speaker 3: the second half. They don't even score a point in
- 25:35Speaker 3: that second half, the Ravens, and still win pretty easily.
- 25:39Speaker 3: It was a very late touchdown, then with the onside
- 25:42Speaker 3: kick attempt.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Late in that game. Cam Ward made a couple throws.
- 25:46Speaker 3: He had that one where he avoids a sack and
- 25:48Speaker 3: rolls to his right and throws back for a good game.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Finally throwing to Cardell Tate, too, which we liked.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 25:55Speaker 3: The connection with Tate was way better in this game
- 25:58Speaker 3: than we've seen. Tate had nine catches, 145 yards, didn't
- 26:01Speaker 3: get in the end zone, but much better than we've
- 26:04Speaker 3: seen from that. And then you look at it and
- 26:06Speaker 3: you say, okay, Tyler Huntley didn't score a single point
- 26:08Speaker 3: in the second half. His QBR was 72.9. Cam Ward's
- 26:12Speaker 3: QBR was 48.2. Well, why is that? He's throwing a
- 26:17Speaker 3: needless shovel pass ahead to Tony Pollard early in the game.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Tony Pollard maybe should have caught that.
- 26:23Speaker 2: He should have caught that ball. I know what he's
- 26:24Speaker 2: thinking on that.
- 26:25Speaker 3: I don't know if he's even looking at the ball
- 26:27Speaker 3: or expecting it, but it just went right off his
- 26:29Speaker 3: shoulder pad for an interception.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Then I'm watching Cam Ward.
- 26:33Speaker 3: He's playing like it's a flag football game with his
- 26:36Speaker 3: buddies on a Sunday afternoon when he's running towards the
- 26:38Speaker 3: sideline and pitches it back.
- 26:40Speaker 2: And almost fumbles it late in the game. Just Will Levis-esque.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Stuff, again, from a franchise number one overall pick at quarterback,
- 26:49Speaker 3: that's simply not good enough. And Jared Stillman posted something
- 26:54Speaker 3: that really makes me mad with this guy. And I
- 26:58Speaker 3: think it hits at everything that we've been talking about
- 27:02Speaker 3: that something feels off with this dude to be.
- 27:05Speaker 2: A franchise quarterback.
- 27:06Speaker 3: And it's the entitlement that we saw in something that
- 27:09Speaker 3: I know that you posted on Twitter as well.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 27:12Speaker 1: And I look at, so he's at the podium, and
- 27:15Speaker 1: he looks over at PR and says, got three minutes.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Three minutes. And he goes, or I'm out. I think
- 27:24Speaker 2: we have it. Do we have that? Okay. We should
- 27:27Speaker 2: have it, yeah. We may not hear it. Okay, let's
- 27:28Speaker 2: hear it. We got three minutes, bro.
- 27:31Speaker 3: What time?
- 27:33Speaker 2: Which door do they come in?
- 27:34Speaker 3: This way?
- 27:35Speaker 1: We'll walk out.
- 27:35Speaker 2: I'm sure they went out. Yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 1: So, background on that right there. The mic's on. It
- 27:54Speaker 1: shouldn't have been on in that moment. Before the presser
- 27:59Speaker 1: started with him, they went with a live feed.
- 28:03Speaker 2: That's setting the background for it. The.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I've been told that he was busting chops. That's Puff.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I could hear Puff talking. Whatever that might be. He
- 28:17Speaker 1: walked into a room that was practically empty. There seems
- 28:19Speaker 1: to be someone that was in the seats that was
- 28:22Speaker 1: talking a little bit. But the room's empty, not out
- 28:25Speaker 1: of disrespect for Cam Ward in any way. Of course
- 28:28Speaker 1: they want to talk to the quarterback. He's the face
- 28:30Speaker 1: of the franchise. But this reaction as though, like, don't
- 28:35Speaker 1: make the guy wait. It's hard not to in these
- 28:38Speaker 1: visiting locker rooms. Half the time around the league where
- 28:42Speaker 1: the media for visiting media is to go for those
- 28:45Speaker 1: pressers with Sala and for the quarterback. It used to
- 28:48Speaker 1: be Henry. It's a decent type of walk. It's not
- 28:52Speaker 1: a long walk by any means, but it's not across
- 28:54Speaker 1: from the locker room like it is in Nashville. They're
- 28:58Speaker 1: in the locker room because it's the only open locker
- 29:00Speaker 1: room of the week. And Chad, Robert Sala speaks. And
- 29:04Speaker 1: then normally it takes a while. for the player to
- 29:06Speaker 1: get a shower, get ready, whatever it might be, talk
- 29:10Speaker 1: to PR, and then actually get behind the podium. So
- 29:12Speaker 1: in between those two moments, the media will go into
- 29:15Speaker 1: the open locker room and talk to the other players
- 29:17Speaker 1: who actually stuck around and want to answer some questions
- 29:21Speaker 1: instead of getting the food line and take the shower
- 29:24Speaker 1: pill and not have to face the music. There were
- 29:27Speaker 1: consistent players in the past that have done this, and
- 29:29Speaker 1: there were consistent players in the past who stuck around
- 29:33Speaker 1: and spoke to the media. This is the face of
- 29:35Speaker 1: the franchise here. Busting chops. I watched this and it
- 29:40Speaker 1: did not come across like that to me. I also
- 29:44Speaker 1: don't see many media members right now that were there
- 29:48Speaker 1: all that upset about it, but they did make it
- 29:51Speaker 1: within three minutes.
- 29:53Speaker 2: And I posted, Chad, that... and it may be facetious,
- 29:57Speaker 2: maybe not.
- 29:58Speaker 1: They're lucky it wasn't three minutes and one second, or
- 30:01Speaker 1: they don't talk to the quarterback, and this is a
- 30:02Speaker 1: huge issue. The only reason we know about it is
- 30:05Speaker 1: because of the hot mic. Dan Moore looks like a punk.
- 30:09Speaker 1: He looks like a total punk. He looks like a spoiled.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Brat pulling out his phone, looking at it. I'm giving
- 30:14Speaker 3: him three minutes, bro, or I'm walking.
- 30:17Speaker 2: I'm out of here. Give me a break, dude. You're
- 30:19Speaker 2: 0-4 this season.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Your QBR is worse than third-string quarterbacks would be if
- 30:24Speaker 3: they play in the league.
- 30:26Speaker 1: He looks like the quarterbacks that he's lost to head-to-head.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Geno Smith, Jameis Winston, half of a game with the
- 30:35Speaker 1: backup in Baltimore, and then Jalen Hurts.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I'm taking all the evidence here, okay? Yes.
- 30:43Speaker 3: The Titans revoked your credential because a reporter in Jared
- 30:47Speaker 3: Stillman dared to ask him a tough question, and he
- 30:49Speaker 3: got snippy about it. And then the day after that happened,
- 30:52Speaker 3: he's revoked. I believe he probably had something to do
- 30:55Speaker 3: with it. I think somebody in his camp may have
- 30:58Speaker 3: had something to do with it. I'm not saying he's
- 30:59Speaker 3: the sole decision maker on that, but I don't think
- 31:01Speaker 3: he liked that very much. I'm seeing him not have
- 31:04Speaker 3: his media there to ask him questions on his time
- 31:07Speaker 3: and And he's upset about that. I'm watching it on
- 31:10Speaker 3: the quarterback show and at times thinking there's just something
- 31:13Speaker 3: missing with Cam Ward.
- 31:15Speaker 2: And I don't get it. A dude who had.
- 31:18Speaker 3: To earn everything before he got to the NFL, from
- 31:21Speaker 3: incarnate word to Washington State to Miami to the number
- 31:25Speaker 3: one pick to the Tennessee Titans, seems like an entitled punk.
- 31:30Speaker 2: That's what it sounded like to me.
- 31:32Speaker 3: You can get away with this when you're Aaron Rodgers
- 31:35Speaker 3: and you're questioning your head coach's play calling and saying,
- 31:37Speaker 3: I need to do a better job of telling them
- 31:39Speaker 3: which plays don't work when you're 43 years old and
- 31:42Speaker 3: you've been in the league as long as he has
- 31:44Speaker 3: and you're a future Hall of Famer. Cam Ward gets
- 31:47Speaker 3: no credit on this.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Cam.
- 31:50Speaker 3: You are still trying to prove that you're not a
- 31:53Speaker 3: complete bust. Texans are coming to town next week.
- 31:57Speaker 2: To play the Titans. Both teams are winless. Great opportunity.
- 32:00Speaker 3: I'm giving a free idea away to the Titans marketing
- 32:02Speaker 3: team right now. Great way to honor your past and
- 32:05Speaker 3: your heritage with Houston coming in by bequeathing the number
- 32:09Speaker 3: one jersey back to Warren Moon, its rightful owner, in
- 32:12Speaker 3: a ceremony on Sunday against the Texans. That's a good
- 32:15Speaker 3: way to honor the past and acknowledge the presence, which
- 32:18Speaker 3: is you gave the number one to a dude who sucks.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Bottom line, that's what it is right now with this
- 32:23Speaker 3: Titans team.
- 32:27Speaker 1: We can go through all the moments here where you've
- 32:30Speaker 1: got the deal with Stillman. He's a good quarterback, a
- 32:36Speaker 1: good NFL quarterback. He believes that. Certainly, the numbers aren't there.
- 32:40Speaker 1: The record now is 3-18. I don't know what it
- 32:42Speaker 1: was then, but Paul certainly pointed that out. He says
- 32:46Speaker 1: his receivers need to run flatter routes. He says he's
- 32:50Speaker 1: improved on his footwork. You've got the three-minute deal here.
- 32:53Speaker 1: We can go through all those things. But ultimately, on
- 32:57Speaker 1: the field, it has not been good enough.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Period.
- 33:01Speaker 1: The offensive line has been. Right now, going into yesterday's game,
- 33:07Speaker 1: they were the number two offensive line in pass blocking efficiency.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Number two in the league. This is a year after
- 33:15Speaker 1: they gave up 55 sacks and he was sacked more
- 33:17Speaker 1: than any quarterback. So it's not the offensive line. They
- 33:22Speaker 1: have the number four overall pick as a rookie out
- 33:24Speaker 1: of Ohio State a university that routinely puts guys in
- 33:28Speaker 1: who immediately ball out. And I mean, get him the football.
- 33:32Speaker 1: We saw what happened yesterday. You have Wandel Robinson, a
- 33:37Speaker 1: thousand yard receiver last year with a rookie quarterback.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Okay.
- 33:43Speaker 1: And we can, we can go through all this. This
- 33:46Speaker 1: has to be better. And just based on results, I'm
- 33:51Speaker 1: not going through the whole podium thing or whatever. This
- 33:54Speaker 1: isn't about next year when they make a decision on
- 33:56Speaker 1: whether or not the guy's going to be the quarterback.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I think it's about this month. This month. Because Marcus
- 34:03Speaker 1: Mariota benched in week six, the year that Vrabel went
- 34:06Speaker 1: away from him. That was Mariota's second year. You've got
- 34:13Speaker 1: Callahan fired week six, second year. There are certain games, everybody, everybody,
- 34:20Speaker 1: all I heard during Will Levis' tenure was, oh, you've
- 34:24Speaker 1: got to give him 20 games, 20 games, you've got
- 34:26Speaker 1: to give him a 20-game start. Well, he got that,
- 34:28Speaker 1: and then we have our result. It's time to start
- 34:32Speaker 1: stacking improvement, not drive to drive, not quarter to quarter,
- 34:37Speaker 1: game to game, because we haven't seen that. I don't
- 34:41Speaker 1: recall a week-long consistent deal in camp at all. I
- 34:46Speaker 1: haven't heard that, where there's bad practices, good practices, and
- 34:52Speaker 1: excuse-making happens all the time. That's old now. October is
- 34:58Speaker 1: about consistency and showing that you have production after development.
- 35:04Speaker 1: And if that doesn't happen, I don't care that Mitchell
- 35:07Speaker 1: Trubisky hasn't produced anything in his career. What I do
- 35:11Speaker 1: care about is whether or not the locker room is
- 35:14Speaker 1: going to continue to believe in the messaging it's really coddling,
- 35:18Speaker 1: that's going on about what they're saying about the quarterback.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Because at some point, it's not all gas, no brake.
- 35:26Speaker 1: It's certainly not BTA.
- 35:30Speaker 2: It's about.
- 35:32Speaker 1: The face of the franchise and all the marketing that's
- 35:34Speaker 1: gone in behind number one. And he's the only one
- 35:39Speaker 1: that gets behind the podium on a week-to-week basis that
- 35:42Speaker 1: you hear from.
- 35:44Speaker 2: And if it's not Jeffrey Simmons.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Chad, there's no one else to point to because it's
- 35:51Speaker 1: all about Cam. And if it's not all positive about Cam,
- 35:56Speaker 1: everybody seems to be getting butthurt about it. And it's
- 35:59Speaker 1: so weak, the whole positivity, if it's not all positive.
- 36:02Speaker 1: The negative comments are not that negative. What I do
- 36:05Speaker 1: know is this dude could not play for the New
- 36:07Speaker 1: York Giants or the New York Jets. He could not
- 36:09Speaker 1: make it in New York based on the sensitive aspect
- 36:12Speaker 1: of the reaction of how he's handled things here.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Period. Hutton, the coddling. Let's get back to the coddling, okay?
- 36:22Speaker 2: I believe that Titans should take a page out of
- 36:25Speaker 2: the Josh Heupel playbook.
- 36:27Speaker 3: He had a very quick trigger. Faison Brandon threw his
- 36:29Speaker 3: first career interception, and he got pulled in the game.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Some may say that was extreme on Saturday, but it
- 36:35Speaker 3: won the Vols a game by making that decision.
- 36:39Speaker 1: And I don't disagree with the fact that I am–
- 36:42Speaker 1: I've made my– I understand why he needs to sit.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I get it.
- 36:47Speaker 1: It's a different coaching situation, though, there, where Salah's in
- 36:50Speaker 1: his second tenure as a coach and Dable wants to
- 36:54Speaker 1: be head coach again. What an indictment on that situation
- 36:58Speaker 1: after three games, four games, to just move on from
- 37:01Speaker 1: the quarterback that you're there to make sure becomes elite.
- 37:07Speaker 1: The backup hasn't been. I understand why it's a little early,
- 37:11Speaker 1: but I'm not waiting.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Until the end of the year to see this.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Separate conversation, and I'm not denying what you're saying, makes
- 37:18Speaker 3: a lot of sense.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Then it's a mistake to hire Robert Sala.
- 37:22Speaker 3: If his decision-making is based on that, that's where you
- 37:24Speaker 3: go get a first-time head coach who's saying, no, I'm
- 37:27Speaker 3: going to run the team the way I want to
- 37:28Speaker 3: run the team. And if he doesn't work out, then
- 37:30Speaker 3: I'm going to bench him, and I'm going to do
- 37:32Speaker 3: what's best for the team, and I'm going to have
- 37:33Speaker 3: the strength to do that. If you don't have that
- 37:36Speaker 3: strength and you've been denutted by the owner where you
- 37:39Speaker 3: can't make that decision as the head football coach, which
- 37:41Speaker 3: I believe is the case, by the way.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I'm agreeing with you, Hutton. I think that's likely the case.
- 37:47Speaker 3: This is not a decision that he can make, and
- 37:49Speaker 3: he's not going to be allowed to do it, and
- 37:51Speaker 3: he's coming from a point of weakness because he sucked
- 37:54Speaker 3: in his first go-around as a head coach, and right
- 37:56Speaker 3: now he's 0-4. and his second go-around as a head coach.
- 37:59Speaker 3: So it's not like he can go in there, puff
- 38:01Speaker 3: his massive chest out. That was, you know, I'm crediting
- 38:05Speaker 3: Robert Sala for his physique now, and say, I'm going
- 38:09Speaker 3: to make this move because I'm Robert Sala, and I
- 38:11Speaker 3: know how to coach the NFL.
- 38:12Speaker 2: I'm going to make this happen. Getting back to the coddling.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Easton Freeze posted this, and I love live shows, and
- 38:18Speaker 3: we're live every day, 8 to 10 a.m. Eastern, because
- 38:21Speaker 3: I just now read it, and it really sets me off.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Okay.
- 38:24Speaker 3: All right, Fox Sports NFL has posted the Cam Ward video,
- 38:28Speaker 3: and it says Cam Ward was.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Ready to walk out.
- 38:30Speaker 3: They got a better angle. They got him walking into
- 38:32Speaker 3: the podium. They've got him talking with Jared Puffer. They've
- 38:36Speaker 3: got him having an attitude about it the whole way through,
- 38:39Speaker 3: looking at his phone. It's not just joking around. He
- 38:42Speaker 3: wanted to walk out, okay? Easton Free says, textbook example
- 38:46Speaker 3: of optics that are only as bad as the current
- 38:48Speaker 3: vibes are.
- 38:49Speaker 2: The scene is ultimately meaningless.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Guy just lost another game and wants to fly home.
- 38:53Speaker 3: But when people are currently inclined to be mad, annoyed,
- 38:55Speaker 3: disappointed in you because of losing football, you cannot give
- 38:58Speaker 3: them this ammo. It's extremely obvious what kind of reaction
- 39:01Speaker 3: it will get under the current circumstances. So it becomes
- 39:04Speaker 3: an unforced error over something devoid of real substance. Here
- 39:07Speaker 3: would be my retort to that. And I have posted
- 39:10Speaker 3: this also. Maybe, just maybe, this attitude is a big
- 39:16Speaker 3: contributing factor to him being bad at quarterback right now
- 39:19Speaker 3: in the NFL. Because at the quarterback position, it's not
- 39:22Speaker 3: good enough just to have arm talent in the NFL
- 39:26Speaker 3: or just to be able to run or just to
- 39:28Speaker 3: be able to improvise. It's the total pack. If you
- 39:31Speaker 3: are a top 10 NFL quarterback, it is your demeanor.
- 39:34Speaker 3: It is your accountability. It is how you're received in
- 39:37Speaker 3: the locker room.
- 39:38Speaker 2: It is everything. Now, there can be certain things that
- 39:41Speaker 2: are so exceptional that it can blot out some other
- 39:44Speaker 2: negatives that you may have from a personality trait standpoint
- 39:47Speaker 2: or whatever. Cam Ward ain't it. When it comes to
- 39:50Speaker 2: that level of talent right now. He's just not.
- 39:53Speaker 3: I don't know that he's ever going to be. But
- 39:55Speaker 3: this whole, oh, it just looks bad because the fans
- 39:58Speaker 3: are mad.
- 39:59Speaker 2: No.
- 40:00Speaker 3: I'm going to say this could also be a root
- 40:02Speaker 3: cause of some of his poor play. This is not
- 40:05Speaker 3: what you want to see from a franchise quarterback.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Period.
- 40:08Speaker 3: You can end it there. It doesn't just have to
- 40:10Speaker 3: be because the team's 0-4 and they're going to read
- 40:12Speaker 3: too much into it.
- 40:13Speaker 2: No. This is part of the problem. It's not the
- 40:16Speaker 2: whole problem anymore. It's part of the problem with Cam Ward. Well,
- 40:20Speaker 2: it is busting chops, whatever.
- 40:25Speaker 1: My initial reaction is exactly what you're saying, Chad, because
- 40:30Speaker 1: of the timeline here. We came in and reacted on
- 40:34Speaker 1: a show one day where we're saying, look, as the quarterback,
- 40:38Speaker 1: you have to ascend to the podium. And when things
- 40:40Speaker 1: go well, it's about your O-line. It's about the play calling.
- 40:42Speaker 1: It's about the receivers making play. And when things don't
- 40:45Speaker 1: go well, it's about you. It's no different than what
- 40:48Speaker 1: Brian Dable did last week. Brian Dable faced the music
- 40:53Speaker 1: about how bad things were in New York, the whole
- 40:56Speaker 1: first half and how things ended for Cam. And he
- 40:59Speaker 1: stood there and goes, that's on me. That's on coaching.
- 41:02Speaker 1: And he goes through, he took the heat for it.
- 41:05Speaker 1: He did not say anything about poor decision-making or poor
- 41:08Speaker 1: execution by Cam Ward, the entire presser. That's just part
- 41:14Speaker 1: of the gig. That's what you do in that position.
- 41:17Speaker 1: That's what you do as the franchise quarterback. You don't
- 41:21Speaker 1: point fingers and you don't sit there and mope when
- 41:24Speaker 1: things aren't going your way. And when I say that,
- 41:27Speaker 1: I'm saying on behalf of everybody, a tough question. Still
- 41:32Speaker 1: been asked him how he would assess his preseason performance.
- 41:36Speaker 1: I mean, I don't understand everything linking up and then
- 41:40Speaker 1: all of a sudden everything's just an individual moment.
- 41:43Speaker 2: This is a trend now.
- 41:45Speaker 1: And I'm one of those that really thought the intangibles
- 41:50Speaker 1: were something that would set him apart because this is
- 41:54Speaker 1: a guy who threw for 11,000 yards. He set the
- 41:56Speaker 1: all-time touchdown record. He did the things that you want
- 42:01Speaker 1: to see from a quarterback in the college level. And
- 42:05Speaker 1: the production is just not there from a guy who
- 42:09Speaker 1: had it in college and doesn't have it here. I just, it's,
- 42:13Speaker 1: It's just not anything close to staircasing this to the
- 42:18Speaker 1: next level.
- 42:18Speaker 2: It's not.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Not whenever the team is willing to just hand off
- 42:25Speaker 1: four straight plays when you have it first and goal.
- 42:29Speaker 1: That's taking the ball out of your quarterback's throwing arm.
- 42:31Speaker 1: That's taking the ball away from Carnell Tate, who's having
- 42:33Speaker 1: a career performance. That's taking the ball away from Wondell
- 42:36Speaker 1: Robinson or a tight end that can potentially make a
- 42:38Speaker 1: big play. Meanwhile, on the other side, you've got a
- 42:41Speaker 1: 30-year-old offensive coordinator who Who's out scheming? Robert Sala. That's
- 42:46Speaker 1: the difference here. Houston's coming into this upcoming week going,
- 42:49Speaker 1: this is a get-right game for us.
- 42:51Speaker 2: We're going to get right. Titans aren't going to think that.
- 42:54Speaker 2: They're going to say it. They can't speak that into existence.
- 42:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's unacceptable. Lou in the YouTube chat, you can
- 43:02Speaker 3: watch us there, interact with us that way.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Please do.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Says, I believe something happened behind closed doors and Cam said,
- 43:08Speaker 3: screw the media. The media that's there is the one
- 43:11Speaker 3: that's protecting the guy. Everybody that was there is like non-story,
- 43:15Speaker 3: no big deal. He's just joshing around everybody. We got
- 43:18Speaker 3: in there on time and he answered questions. And it's
- 43:21Speaker 3: no big deal. It's everybody else who watches that and
- 43:24Speaker 3: sees the way the guy plays and says, there's something
- 43:28Speaker 3: off here. That's not what I want to see in
- 43:30Speaker 3: a quarterback.
- 43:31Speaker 1: This would not have gone viral the way it did
- 43:34Speaker 1: had there not been a trend of things. Again, the
- 43:40Speaker 1: team told a media member he's no longer allowed at
- 43:43Speaker 1: the facility after he asked a question to Cam Ward.
- 43:46Speaker 1: And this was back in August. Let's just start there.
- 43:51Speaker 3: And that's where Ben in the YouTube chat, Hutton, brings
- 43:54Speaker 3: this point up and says it beautifully watching the show. Yesterday,
- 43:58Speaker 3: he looks like a guy that would go to PR
- 43:59Speaker 3: and ask them to remove Jared after that exchange. But
- 44:02Speaker 3: our media didn't think it was important enough to ask
- 44:04Speaker 3: him about it after all that happened and wouldn't ask
- 44:07Speaker 3: him the question on it. This is, again, part of
- 44:10Speaker 3: the problem with what we're talking about here.
- 44:12Speaker 1: See, I don't think it was Cam about that because...
- 44:18Speaker 1: Kaharski wasn't asked to never come back.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Also, but he does look like a guy who would
- 44:24Speaker 3: do that. That's what I saw in that moment. Like,
- 44:26Speaker 3: that's what I've seen from him consistently. If you just
- 44:29Speaker 3: show me that video, Ben's right.
- 44:31Speaker 2: I see that. Oh, there.
- 44:33Speaker 3: I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'd be like, yeah,
- 44:36Speaker 3: seems like a guy who would get upset and go
- 44:38Speaker 3: to his PR guy after threatening to leave if they're
- 44:41Speaker 3: not there in three minutes and say, get this guy
- 44:44Speaker 3: out of here.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Because that's the perception. Yeah.
- 44:47Speaker 1: It's in the back of the mind.
- 44:50Speaker 3: It's worth asking him the question, is what Ben is
- 44:53Speaker 3: saying and what I'm saying. Whether he did it or not,
- 44:55Speaker 3: it's a worthy question to ask him.
- 44:58Speaker 1: It is same song, different verse.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Isn't it?
- 45:03Speaker 1: I'll point this out too. Luckily, they got in there
- 45:07Speaker 1: before three minutes was up so that they could ask
- 45:09Speaker 1: the same questions about the same type of result. Do
- 45:13Speaker 1: you agree with me on the Houston Texans coming in
- 45:14Speaker 1: thinking they're getting their first win? It's a get-right game?
- 45:17Speaker 2: Yes, and it is.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And the Titans are doing what with that? They should
- 45:24Speaker 1: be giving Warren Moat a finish pass. They should be
- 45:27Speaker 1: giving Warren Moat a jersey back.
- 45:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but they won't.
- 45:29Speaker 1: We won't see any consistent play there. And then they
- 45:32Speaker 1: have the Colts right after. Plenty to get to on
- 45:37Speaker 1: Hutton and Withrow. Presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Chad. Help me with what do we have on the
- 45:45Speaker 2: rundown right here?
- 45:46Speaker 3: We've got the end of Shane Beamer. Have we seen
- 45:49Speaker 3: it on Saturday night?
- 45:52Speaker 1: My number three on the dry erase board erased over here.
- 45:56Speaker 2: My little pocket erase board.
- 45:57Speaker 3: You've got to keep your powder dry, Hutton. You've got
- 45:59Speaker 3: to keep your dry erase board dry. That hand rubs
- 46:02Speaker 3: it off, and it's not going to be able to
- 46:03Speaker 3: be seen.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Fair enough.
- 46:05Speaker 1: You know what? Just don't ask me about it. I'm
- 46:07Speaker 1: very sensitive about this.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Three minutes. Hutton's got three minutes, and he's out of here.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Three minutes if everybody's not ready. He's out. We're back
- 46:14Speaker 2: in less than three minutes.
