- 0:00Speaker 1: At the Lunar Fleet Base, a tightly guarded experimental spaceship
- 0:03Speaker 1: disappears before Commander Buzz Corey and Cadet Happy can inspect it.
- 0:09Speaker 1: The investigation leads from missing scientists to escaped prisoner Jan
- 0:14Speaker 1: O'Calmier and then beyond the solar system toward Valkor. From
- 0:19Speaker 1: ABC Radio's Nestle-sponsored run of Space Patrol, this is Episode 95,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Super Sensitive Star Drive, first broadcast July 24, 1954. Ed
- 0:32Speaker 1: Kemmer stars as Commander Corey, with Lynn Osborne as Cadet Happy,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Lou Houston wrote the script, and Larry Robertson directed. Ladies
- 0:42Speaker 1: and gentlemen, Space Patrol is ready for departure. Here is
- 0:46Speaker 1: the original broadcast.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Space Patrol!
- 0:49Speaker 3: Space Patrol! My adventure in the wild vast reaches of space.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Missions of daring in the name of interplanetary justice. Travel
- 1:00Speaker 3: into the future with Buzz Corey, commander-in-chief of the Space Patrol.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Commander Corey and Cadet Happy are at the lunar fleet
- 1:11Speaker 2: base on the Earth's moon. Just inside the north rim
- 1:14Speaker 2: of the huge atmosphere shell is a large hangar entirely
- 1:18Speaker 2: surrounded by a high fence of endurium mesh. A command
- 1:22Speaker 2: car falls to the gate. An armed guard examines the
- 1:25Speaker 2: credentials of the three men in the car, then salutes.
- 1:28Speaker 2: The car pulls through the gate and heads toward the hangar.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Behind its giant door lies one of the most costly
- 1:33Speaker 2: and carefully guarded secrets that space patrol scientists have ever undertaken.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Sub the car at this end of the hangar, if
- 1:41Speaker 2: you will, cadet. Yes, sir. Hey, isn't anyone working around
- 1:49Speaker 2: here today? Outside of the guard, I mean? No, that's
- 1:51Speaker 2: at United Planets Day, remember? Oh, sure, the holiday. That's
- 1:54Speaker 2: why I suggested that today be ideal for a final
- 1:56Speaker 2: inspection of the ship before the official test. Ready, Mr. Meyer?
- 2:01Speaker 2: If you don't mind, Commander, before I open that hangar door,
- 2:06Speaker 2: I'd like to collect my thoughts. Of course. It's been
- 2:09Speaker 2: three years. Three years of almost constant work. You've had
- 2:13Speaker 2: a tremendous responsibility, that's certain. Yes, but it must have
- 2:17Speaker 2: been exciting, building a spaceship with a super-sensitive star drive.
- 2:20Speaker 2: A ship that can go anywhere in the galaxy. All right, cadet.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I know you're interested to see it.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I'll open the hangar door. Commander... Are we going to
- 2:33Speaker 2: be aboard tomorrow on the first flight? Not on the
- 2:34Speaker 2: first one, Hap. Mr. Meyerhoff's assistants, Bradley and Scott, will
- 2:37Speaker 2: be the only ones aboard. Oh. Secretary General's orders, Hap.
- 2:40Speaker 2: For some reason, he doesn't want us to run the
- 2:42Speaker 2: risk of disappearing into another dimension. I need some help
- 2:45Speaker 2: with that door, Mr. Meyerhoff.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Oh, I'll have it in a minute.
- 2:48Speaker 2: These electronic logs always give me trouble. Hey, look. Why? Why,
- 3:08Speaker 2: it's impossible. The hangar is empty. The ship is gone.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Into the command car, quick. We're going to base headquarters.
- 3:17Speaker 2: A few moments later, at headquarters of the Lunar Fleet Base,
- 3:20Speaker 2: Commander Corey questions a thoroughly bewildered guard, then sends Happy
- 3:24Speaker 2: to communications to space a phone in all planets alert.
- 3:28Speaker 2: As the last guard salutes and strides out the door,
- 3:30Speaker 2: Buzz turns to Meyerhoff, who's been sitting motionless, staring into space.
- 3:40Speaker 2: The guards say nobody entered the gates. Space controls accounted
- 3:43Speaker 2: for every ship that passed through the space locks. Tomorrow,
- 3:46Speaker 2: I know this is a blow for you, but you're
- 3:49Speaker 2: the only one who can help us. Who beside yourself
- 3:51Speaker 2: knows the combination of that electronic lock? Just Bradley and Scott.
- 3:54Speaker 2: The guards say nobody came through the gate. Besides, that
- 3:57Speaker 2: ship couldn't have been removed from the hangar without tearing
- 3:59Speaker 2: down that fence. And it couldn't blast off in the
- 4:01Speaker 2: fleet base without going through the space locks. Or could it?
- 4:05Speaker 2: This star driver operates through a different space-time matrix, doesn't it?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Now tell me this. Could that ship be put into
- 4:11Speaker 2: another dimension from a dead standstill? I don't know. It
- 4:17Speaker 2: would be risky to try. Could it have been an accident?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Could that hypermagnetic star drive mechanism have cut in by itself? Really,
- 4:24Speaker 2: I can't say. The old planet's alert. It's going out, sir. Thanks.
- 4:29Speaker 2: The ship would be halfway to Alpha Centauri by this time.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Anything on Mr. Meyerhoff's system? No, sir. The base has
- 4:35Speaker 2: been searched and there's no sign of either Bradley or Scott.
- 4:38Speaker 2: The guards insist that nobody went through that gate. Anything
- 4:41Speaker 2: for Terra headquarters, then? Just routines, sir. Except that Professor
- 4:44Speaker 2: Nicholson has disappeared. Arthur Nicholson, the bacteriologist? Yes, sir. Major
- 4:49Speaker 2: Robertson has assigned two agents to handle the case. Well,
- 4:51Speaker 2: we'll rob you of a job. We don't have to
- 4:52Speaker 2: worry about that. Mr. Meyerhoff, about this star drive. Can
- 4:56Speaker 2: you tell me if Commander... I don't know what happened.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I can't explain it. Oh, we're all in the dark, man, huh?
- 5:03Speaker 2: The Bradley and Scott gone, you're the only man in
- 5:05Speaker 2: the solar system who can even make an intelligent guess
- 5:07Speaker 2: about what happened at the star drive. I'm sorry, but
- 5:10Speaker 2: I don't know how it works. What? You don't? It
- 5:15Speaker 2: wasn't actually my theory. I followed someone else's blueprint, so
- 5:20Speaker 2: to speak. That's why I've been so worried. Well, who
- 5:23Speaker 2: did originate the theory? A man named Janotelmy. He came
- 5:28Speaker 2: to me three years ago and asked me to work
- 5:30Speaker 2: with him. I was to take all the credits and
- 5:33Speaker 2: supervise the actual construction. Where is this General Calmeir now?
- 5:36Speaker 2: He's in a criminal rehabilitation center on Mars. That means
- 5:40Speaker 2: he's in suspended animation. Oh, yes, I remember the name.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Calmeir was convicted of fraud and bribery of public officials.
- 5:46Speaker 2: He seemed to have an amazing power of persuasion and
- 5:48Speaker 2: incredible influence over people.
- 5:50Speaker 4: I can testify to that.
- 5:52Speaker 2: He's utterly compelling. Even after he was arrested, I continued
- 5:56Speaker 2: his work, just as though he were still beside me.
- 5:59Speaker 2: That's based upon the Mars Rehab Center, and find out
- 6:01Speaker 2: what stage of treatment Calmeer is in. If he's not
- 6:03Speaker 2: under suspended animation, he can probably help us. Yes, sir.
- 6:06Speaker 2: While Happy's contacting Mars, Meyerhoff, suppose you'd tell me what
- 6:09Speaker 2: you know about Jano Calmeer. Commander, I've made contact with
- 6:20Speaker 2: Mars Rehab Center. It's Dr. Wallace, the assistant superintendent.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Thanks, Anthony.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Dr. Wallace?
- 6:25Speaker 4: Yes, Commander.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I'd like to know what stage of treatment one of
- 6:27Speaker 2: your patients is in at the present time. The chart
- 6:29Speaker 2: is right in front of me, Commander. Patient's name, please?
- 6:32Speaker 2: Jano Calmeir. Commander, Jano Calmeir has disappeared. Disappeared how?
- 6:38Speaker 4: Sometime during the night.
- 6:39Speaker 2: You see, he'd completed all the phases of treatment and
- 6:41Speaker 2: was in the outpatient section for general observation. Well, he
- 6:44Speaker 2: didn't show up for breakfast.
- 6:45Speaker 4: We got a little worried.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Has his escape been reported to Space Patrol? Escape?
- 6:50Speaker 4: Why, no one would escape when they're cured of criminal
- 6:52Speaker 4: tendencies and about to be released.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Calmeer has been reported missing, however, and the search has been... Dr. Wallace,
- 6:58Speaker 2: he's in an emergency alert immediately. General Calmeer is not
- 7:01Speaker 2: a missing patient. He's an escaped criminal. Cory out. We
- 7:05Speaker 2: can rock it first as ship disappears and Bradley and
- 7:07Speaker 2: Scott and now Calmer. Well, as the doctor said, it
- 7:09Speaker 2: is incredible that a cured patient would escape. Also incredible
- 7:13Speaker 2: that a spaceship should vanish from a locked and guarded hangar. Meyerhoff,
- 7:17Speaker 2: get your gear ready. I'm issuing an all-planets alert for
- 7:19Speaker 2: General Calmer and then we're blasting off for Mars. I've
- 7:32Speaker 2: re-computed our vectors, sir. We'll cut rockets on Mars in
- 7:35Speaker 2: about 14.09 hours. I'd like to increase our acceleration, but
- 7:37Speaker 2: I don't think Meyerhoff could take it. I'm afraid you're right, Commander.
- 7:41Speaker 2: This literally is just about my speed. Mr. Meyerhoff, I
- 7:45Speaker 2: thought you were back aft taking a nap. Oh, I'm
- 7:47Speaker 2: too keyed up to sleep. Excuse me, sir. Moving object
- 7:50Speaker 2: in the viewscope. 14 degree heading off starboard. Relative velocity 55,000 VUs.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Not quite a collision course. Not a meteor, is it?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Can't tell for sure just yet. No. No, it's decelerating.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And changing vector slightly. The spaceship. And the pilot undoubtedly
- 8:06Speaker 2: sees it. From here, it looks like a freighter. Yes,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and that blunt nose would make it a Class D, probably.
- 8:11Speaker 2: The way she's acting, she must be in trouble. We'll
- 8:13Speaker 2: cut a velocity inhaler. That's all we need now is
- 8:16Speaker 2: to have to stop and play nurse to a limping
- 8:17Speaker 2: old space bucket. What do you suppose is wrong? Could
- 8:19Speaker 2: be anything from a faulty air purifier to a shortage
- 8:22Speaker 2: of fuel. Well, maybe the pilot just wants to borrow
- 8:24Speaker 2: my comb. Borrow your... Oh, you're joking. Well, it's hard
- 8:28Speaker 2: to tell what is a joke these days. While you
- 8:30Speaker 2: were back at it, the commander and I heard about
- 8:32Speaker 2: a brand new kind of crime over the space phone.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Some goofy crook is stealing mud. Mud? Plain old Venus mud.
- 8:38Speaker 2: That wasn't exactly plain mud. It was especially treated topsoil
- 8:41Speaker 2: on an experimental farm. During the night, about 10,000 cubic
- 8:44Speaker 2: feet of the stuff was either scooped or sucked up
- 8:46Speaker 2: by a vacuum pump into a spaceship. The whole cargo
- 8:49Speaker 2: wouldn't be worth 10 credits. Imagine going to all that
- 8:51Speaker 2: trouble and expense to steal mud. When it would be
- 8:54Speaker 2: cheaper to make your own. Hey. Hey, look at that freighter.
- 8:58Speaker 2: It's sure a battered up old hulk. And it's a
- 9:00Speaker 2: Jupiter registry. Let's see what his trouble is. Commander Corey
- 9:04Speaker 2: aboard Terra 5 calling Class B freighter number JF-369. Acknowledged
- 9:08Speaker 2: by space, a phone, or signal light.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Freighter JF-369 to Commander Corey.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Emergency. A small meteor punctured the hull and I can't
- 9:16Speaker 2: plug it. Why, that's... That's terrible. How many are aboard?
- 9:20Speaker 2: Just myself.
- 9:21Speaker 4: I don't have a space suit or I wouldn't have trouble.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Stand by to join airlocks. We're in a hurry, so
- 9:25Speaker 2: we'll bring you a space suit. Thanks. I'll get the
- 9:28Speaker 2: suit out of the locker, Commander. That'll leave you and
- 9:30Speaker 2: the kid at free to maneuver the ship. Thanks, Byron.
- 9:33Speaker 2: All right, Hap. Stand by to apply like any other coupler.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Standing by, sir. Commander, the freighter blew up. That's no explosion.
- 9:41Speaker 2: The hull is peeling off in sections. That's a false hull.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Must be shedding it with a repeller, eh? That's right.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Just clearing the deck so we can join airlocks, Commander.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Smoking rockets? Look what's underneath. What a ship. It's the
- 9:54Speaker 2: Star Drive. Well, he wants to join airlocks. Fine, we'll
- 9:57Speaker 2: hold him fast without any cover, then board him and
- 9:59Speaker 2: give him a... fight if he wants. Great. Commander, my
- 10:03Speaker 2: ray gun's gone. And so is yours. I've got them, gentlemen.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Now you will do as Calmer tells you.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Bring them aboard the Star Drive, Meyerhoff.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Commander, you're coming with me to Valkor, 50 light years away.
- 10:16Speaker 4: And you're never coming back.
- 10:31Speaker 2: After a secret spaceship with the new star drive disappears
- 10:34Speaker 2: mysteriously from the lunar fleet base, Buzz and Happy learn
- 10:37Speaker 2: that the actual inventor, Jano Calmeir, has escaped from a
- 10:41Speaker 2: criminal rehabilitation center on the planet Mars. The space patrollers
- 10:45Speaker 2: blast off for the red planet, taking with them a Mr. Meyerhoff,
- 10:49Speaker 2: the scientist who directed the construction of the interstellar craft.
- 10:52Speaker 2: They stop to aid a battered freighter, which suddenly sheds
- 10:56Speaker 2: its false hull, revealing the sleek lines of a missing
- 10:58Speaker 2: Star Drive ship. Double-crossed by the supposedly honest passenger, Bosley
- 11:03Speaker 2: and Happy now stand in the control compartment of a
- 11:05Speaker 2: super-speed ship held at gunpoint by Meyerhoff and Calamir. It's
- 11:11Speaker 2: good to have you aboard, Corey. I never thought I'd
- 11:14Speaker 2: have quite so many distinguished and... useful passengers aboard. You'll
- 11:18Speaker 2: be quite welcome on Valkor. Just where in what is Valkor?
- 11:22Speaker 2: The main planet of the star Garzik. Fifty light years
- 11:25Speaker 2: from the solar system. Meyerhoff, I'll watch Corey and the cadet.
- 11:30Speaker 2: You release the magnetic coupler and blast away from the terrified. Yes, Calvert. Double-crosser.
- 11:35Speaker 2: You're being unfair to Meyerhoff, cadet. He can't help cooperating
- 11:39Speaker 2: with me. By now, it's almost an instinctive reaction. And
- 11:43Speaker 2: all the time Meyerhoff was building this star drive ship,
- 11:46Speaker 2: he knew you were going to steal it. No, he
- 11:48Speaker 2: acted in good faith. His only conscious goal was to
- 11:51Speaker 2: follow my designs and build a ship that could reach
- 11:53Speaker 2: the stars. I've released Corey's ship, Calvin. Good. Increase acceleration.
- 11:58Speaker 2: When we're far out of the solar system, we'll cut
- 12:00Speaker 2: into star drives. But what makes you think there are
- 12:02Speaker 2: any planets within the star, Dosek? And this Valkor, how
- 12:05Speaker 2: do you know it can support life even if it exists?
- 12:08Speaker 4: Because, Commander.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Valkor is my home planet. I don't believe it. I
- 12:14Speaker 2: am a Valkorian. I have mental powers far higher than
- 12:17Speaker 2: anyone in your solar system. I can persuade and influence
- 12:20Speaker 2: you lesser beings. As a result, you employ your own
- 12:24Speaker 2: intelligence and energy to achieve my goals. Yet you think
- 12:28Speaker 2: you are working through your own free will. I can
- 12:30Speaker 2: tell you now that you won't get any cooperation from
- 12:32Speaker 2: Happy and me. No, that's true. That's because our first
- 12:36Speaker 2: meeting was on a level of force and conflict. If
- 12:38Speaker 2: you Valkorians are so superior, why are you taking us
- 12:41Speaker 2: with you? Why do you need us? That's something you
- 12:44Speaker 2: will learn later. Originally, I had planned to take only
- 12:47Speaker 2: Meyerhoff and Nicholson, the bacteriologists. Nicholson? You mean he's aboard
- 12:50Speaker 2: the Star Drive? Yes. In suspended animation. His work will
- 12:54Speaker 2: begin after we reach Valkor. What work? Valkor is suffering
- 12:59Speaker 2: from a shortage of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Plant life doesn't grow
- 13:03Speaker 2: as it should. Consequently, we are faced with an eventual
- 13:06Speaker 2: food shortage. That's the chief reason I came to your
- 13:09Speaker 2: solar system, to find beneficial bacteria. And I suppose you
- 13:13Speaker 2: were successful. Yes. I found the type I was looking
- 13:16Speaker 2: for on the planet Venus. I scooped up several thousand
- 13:19Speaker 2: cubic feet of mud containing the bacteria from one of
- 13:22Speaker 2: your experimental farms. And you abducted Professor Nicholson to develop
- 13:25Speaker 2: that strain of bacteria. Correct. As a scientist, he should
- 13:28Speaker 2: be quite happy on Valkor. How did you get the
- 13:30Speaker 2: Star Drive ship off a lunar fleet base? Meyerhoff's assistants,
- 13:33Speaker 2: Bradley and Scott, were able to deceive the guards, thanks
- 13:36Speaker 2: to my influence on their minds. They put the Star
- 13:39Speaker 2: Drive directly into a higher dimension. And the ship rematerialized
- 13:42Speaker 2: somewhere else. Yes, out beyond the Neptune orbit. Where are
- 13:46Speaker 2: Bradley and Scott now? Aboard this ship? No, they're in
- 13:48Speaker 2: a hospital on Venus. You see, going directly into the
- 13:51Speaker 2: Star Drive has a disturbing effect upon the mind. But
- 13:55Speaker 2: don't worry, they'll recover. Kelmir, look at the viewscope. What? Spaceships. Commander,
- 14:00Speaker 2: they're approaching from all directions. Those are space patrol ships, Kelmir.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You're surrounded. Meyerhoff, what is our velocity? It's 80,000 mu.
- 14:09Speaker 2: We'll go into star drive. But we're only traveling a
- 14:12Speaker 2: small fraction of the speed of light. We're far under
- 14:15Speaker 2: the safety margin. Remember what happened to Bradley and Scott.
- 14:18Speaker 2: But they were on the surface of the Earth's moon,
- 14:20Speaker 2: under a strong gravity pull. We are out in space.
- 14:22Speaker 2: What difference does that make? Out here, away from a
- 14:25Speaker 2: large mass, we're under less resistance. When we're suddenly transformed
- 14:28Speaker 2: into another dimension, we'll black out, but it won't be serious.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Go on, Meyerhoff. Cut in the star drive. All right, Kilmian.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Nothing's happening. Just wait. In a few seconds, we'll vanish
- 14:45Speaker 2: from the fuel of those ships.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 14:49Speaker 2: You're too late. When you come to, we'll be in
- 14:52Speaker 2: another galaxy. Under the force of the star drive, the
- 15:06Speaker 2: spaceship is in a dimension where time and space as
- 15:08Speaker 2: we know it have no meaning. The four men lie
- 15:12Speaker 2: motionless on the deck of the control compartment. Buzz and
- 15:15Speaker 2: Happy are the first to regain consciousness. The ship is
- 15:18Speaker 2: completely silent now, and through the viewport, not a single
- 15:22Speaker 2: star relieves the blackness of space. Gently, Buzz nudges Happy. Happy.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Calmeer and Meyerhoff are still out. Now's our chance. We'll
- 15:31Speaker 2: grab their ray guns and wait for them to come in.
- 15:33Speaker 2: They're coming around. I've got Meyerhoff's guns. Keep an eye
- 15:37Speaker 2: on them. I'll take care of Calmeer. Let's go with
- 15:40Speaker 2: the gun, Calmy. Now get us in control and get
- 15:44Speaker 2: us back to the solar system. That's impossible, Commander. Once
- 15:48Speaker 2: the star drive is set, it cannot be changed until
- 15:51Speaker 2: the ship reaches its predetermined destination. When we are near Valcor,
- 15:55Speaker 2: the ship automatically will cut out a star drive and
- 15:57Speaker 2: into regular rocket drive. Commander, maybe something's wrong with the ship.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Everything's so quiet. The star drive makes no sound except
- 16:05Speaker 2: when it cuts in or out. How long will it
- 16:07Speaker 2: take us to reach Valcor? In Star Drive, Commander, that
- 16:10Speaker 2: is a meaningless question. To you, it may seem a
- 16:13Speaker 2: month or a year. To me, it may appear to
- 16:15Speaker 2: be a minute or two. It doesn't matter anyway. You
- 16:19Speaker 2: might as well resign yourself to the fact that you
- 16:21Speaker 2: will spend the rest of your lives on Valcor. Yeah? Well,
- 16:24Speaker 2: I'm not... What's that? We're cutting out of the Star Drive.
- 16:28Speaker 2: That means we're near Valcor. Prepare to black out. This time,
- 16:40Speaker 2: when Buzz and Happy open their eyes, the ship is
- 16:42Speaker 2: again silent. But a bright light is pouring in through
- 16:45Speaker 2: the viewpoints. And standing over them with a ray gun
- 16:48Speaker 2: is Kalmir. On your feet, gentlemen. And I hope you
- 16:52Speaker 2: both realize the utility of forcing me to use this weapon.
- 16:56Speaker 2: So you pulled out of it first this time, Kalmir? Yes.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Possibly the excitement of my return to Valkor revived me
- 17:02Speaker 2: so quickly. I don't hear the rockets. And where's that
- 17:04Speaker 2: light coming from? The light is from Garzik, the star
- 17:07Speaker 2: that is Valkor's son. And you don't hear the rockets
- 17:10Speaker 2: because the ship has landed. You mean you came out
- 17:13Speaker 2: of the star drive right onto Valkor? No, we emerged
- 17:15Speaker 2: from hyperspace several million D.U.s from the planet. Meyerhoff and
- 17:19Speaker 2: I brought the ship in. So Meyerhoff's okay now, huh? Yes,
- 17:22Speaker 2: he's back at checking on Professor Nicholson.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Valkor calling Caramere. I relieve you of the two spacemen.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Bring them to the edge of the clearing.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Valkor out. Hey, who was that? A Valkorian, of course.
- 17:35Speaker 2: A friend of mine. But he was speaking English. Dargo
- 17:38Speaker 2: is a scholar. He knows the languages of many universes.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Just a minute. How does it happen that he contacts
- 17:44Speaker 2: you in English? Why not Valkorian? By looking through the viewport,
- 17:47Speaker 2: I can see we're landed out in the wilderness. There's
- 17:49Speaker 2: no sign of a city. Yeah, Kelner. How come? I
- 17:53Speaker 2: thought you had such an advanced civilization. This is of
- 17:55Speaker 2: no importance. Come. Dargo is waiting. Nicholson will come out
- 18:02Speaker 2: of suspended animation in about an hour. Meyerhoff, stay here
- 18:05Speaker 2: on the ship. I'll be right back. Very well. Go on, Corey.
- 18:12Speaker 2: You too, cadet. Calmeer, what are you going to do
- 18:16Speaker 2: with them? Turn them over to Dargo. Why do you
- 18:19Speaker 2: want it all? Oh, it's none of my business, sorry. Gentlemen,
- 18:32Speaker 2: you are the first human beings from your universe to
- 18:35Speaker 2: set foot on Valkor. That fellow coming toward us, that's Dargo? Yes.
- 18:41Speaker 2: You were right, Commander. There's no sign of his city.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Come here. You've come back with a cargo of valuable
- 18:46Speaker 2: nitrogen-fixing bacteria. We'll assign us who can show you how
- 18:49Speaker 2: to use it. You should be landing at your planet's
- 18:51Speaker 2: capital with bands playing and people cheering. We don't go
- 18:54Speaker 2: in for such childish displays on Valkor. No? No. Perhaps
- 18:58Speaker 2: you and Dargo are criminals on your own planet. That
- 19:00Speaker 2: is not true. But explain why Dargo contacted you in English,
- 19:04Speaker 2: so no one on Valkor could understand your conversation. Dargo
- 19:06Speaker 2: will explain. When he is ready, he'll take over now. Dargo,
- 19:12Speaker 2: here are the spacemen from the solar system. Fine specimen.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Sevkalo Tazan Abida. Trumoina Kovei. Van. Aknolaru Grisoma. Blan Zultram.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Salmir has just explained that you think we are criminals. Actually,
- 19:29Speaker 2: we are patriots fighting against an evil leader. We need
- 19:32Speaker 2: your help. I don't like your recruiting methods, Dargo. Commander,
- 19:36Speaker 2: there are two factions here on Valkor. The one in
- 19:38Speaker 2: power promised to help the people by finding new sources
- 19:41Speaker 2: of food. They lied. The rulers are confiscating supplies for
- 19:45Speaker 2: their own selfish needs. If that's true, I'm sorry to
- 19:47Speaker 2: hear it. So far, your methods don't seem very democratic.
- 19:50Speaker 2: to me. Yeah, how do we know the people would
- 19:52Speaker 2: do any better off if your game took over? That
- 19:54Speaker 2: is not your concern. You are here on Balcor. You
- 19:58Speaker 2: can't return to your home planet. So you have to
- 20:01Speaker 2: work for us. What could we do? We don't know
- 20:04Speaker 2: your language or anything about your planet. But you do
- 20:07Speaker 2: know how to fight. You could help organize an army.
- 20:10Speaker 2: You could set up a counter-spy system. You could give
- 20:12Speaker 2: me that ray gun.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I'll get Dargo.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Drop it, Calman. You fool. My men are back there
- 20:18Speaker 2: in the forest.
- 20:19Speaker 3: You're not going to get a chance to warn them.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Come on, Hap. Get back to the ship, quick. Yes, sir. Hey,
- 20:26Speaker 2: what about Meyerhoff? If he saw what happened... You don't
- 20:28Speaker 2: take a chance on Meyerhoff or stay here forever. I'll
- 20:30Speaker 2: go first, Hap. When you're aboard, slam the hatch closed.
- 20:36Speaker 2: All right, Meyerhoff. Get your hands up and get away
- 20:38Speaker 2: from those controls. Yes, Commander. Okay, Commander. Rocket drive controls
- 20:44Speaker 2: are different on this ship. I'll help you, Commander. I
- 20:47Speaker 2: thought you were working for Calmeer. I don't know what
- 20:50Speaker 2: came over me. I must have been out.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Of my mind.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Commander, Calmeer and his pal are running toward the ship,
- 20:55Speaker 2: and Dargo is aiming something at us. All right, Meyerhoff.
- 20:57Speaker 2: If we're on the level, get this ship off the
- 20:59Speaker 2: ground in a hurry. I'm a little confused. I think
- 21:04Speaker 2: this is the rocket control here. No, no, that's the
- 21:09Speaker 2: repeller ray. Leave it on. We're off the ground. Get
- 21:12Speaker 2: all the altitude you can with the repeller ray, then
- 21:14Speaker 2: blast off. Dargo is still aiming that thing at us,
- 21:16Speaker 2: whatever it is. If he shoots the ship down now,
- 21:18Speaker 2: he won't stand a chance. Does the ship have any
- 21:20Speaker 2: weapons or any space torpedoes? No, it's unarmed. Oh, wait, Meyerhoff.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Where's the cargo hatch release? The cargo hatch release? Yes,
- 21:26Speaker 2: where the mud is stored. Oh, yes.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Just press this switch and the hatch will open.
- 21:31Speaker 2: I'm going to shift for the starboard. The repel array control.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Tell me when we'll ride over Dargo. Oh, great. They
- 21:37Speaker 2: will dare shoot the ship down when it'll fall on them.
- 21:39Speaker 4: We're nearly over them, sir.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Hey, the direct hit. Look at them down there, covered
- 21:50Speaker 2: with tons of nice gooey mud. Didn't bury them, did it? Oh, no, sir.
- 21:53Speaker 2: It's spreading out. But they're sure wallowing around. Oh, I've
- 21:56Speaker 2: got it now, Commander. This is the rocket control. Brace yourselves.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I'm going to fire rockets. Well? Goodbye, Valkor. The question
- 22:14Speaker 2: now is whether we can find the solar system. Meyerhoff,
- 22:17Speaker 2: do you know how to set up the star drive
- 22:19Speaker 2: for the return trip? Yes. You simply use the reciprocals
- 22:23Speaker 2: of the hyperspace coordinates that we used to get to Valkor.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I'm sure glad you're back on our side. I figured
- 22:28Speaker 2: that Calmer's influence over Meyerhoff was broken right after we
- 22:31Speaker 2: landed it. Probably it was the shock of going in
- 22:34Speaker 2: and out of the star drive. This time we'll wait
- 22:36Speaker 2: till we reach peak velocity with rocket drives before we
- 22:40Speaker 2: switch over. You and I had better go back and
- 22:42Speaker 2: see if Professor Nicholson is all right. Yes, sir. I
- 22:45Speaker 2: wonder if Calmeer and Dargo are still flounding around in
- 22:48Speaker 2: the mud. Boy, I'll bet they're mad. I should be
- 22:50Speaker 2: grateful to her for the favor. Favor? Yes. It's all
- 22:54Speaker 2: cornuted soil containing nitrogen fixing bacteria. And that's what they got.
- 22:58Speaker 2: That's right. We dumped it right in their laps.
