1:50
Speaker 6: This morning, we're in pretty good shape. I drive in
1:53
Speaker 6: secondary roads, Yeah, not so much. I will say this.
1:57
Speaker 6: The hardest part of my commute this when he's actually
2:00
Speaker 6: getting out of my subdivision. That was the hardest part.
2:04
Speaker 6: Other than that though, it was pretty good. But again,
2:07
Speaker 6: we started, you know the day or when I got
2:09
Speaker 6: to work about twenty five degrees or so. It's going
2:11
Speaker 6: to warm up to the low forties, so some of
2:13
Speaker 6: it is going to melt. But regardless, and of course
2:16
Speaker 6: that leads me to my next point and has to
2:19
Speaker 6: do with school. No matter you know this, No matter
2:22
Speaker 6: what school officials do in regards to having school and
2:25
Speaker 6: inclement weather days, whether they're closed, remote learning, all out
2:28
Speaker 6: snow days, one two three delays one two three hour delays, whatever,
2:33
Speaker 6: early DISMISSI was not, everybody's going to be happy about
2:36
Speaker 6: what actually goes into making those decisions. Cannaw County School

2:42

Speaker 4: started though. Sierra Marlin McLay Center. How you doing?
3:00
Speaker 7: Good morning, I'm doing okay after sliding into.
3:02
Speaker 4: Work, Okay, I's gonna say, how was your commute in
3:04
Speaker 4: this morning.
3:05
Speaker 7: You know, it wasn't too bad. I expected much worse.
3:08
Speaker 3: But I grew up on a mountain in the middle
3:09
Speaker 3: of nowhere, so this is this is easy piece here And.
3:11
Speaker 4: Where did you grow up?
3:12
Speaker 6: You don't Clake County, Clay County, all right, so you
3:14
Speaker 6: know all about this. This is probably nothing to you, right.
3:16
Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm super sorry.
3:18
Speaker 6: Guys.
3:18
Speaker 7: If you're having trouble, you're just gonna have to follow me.
3:22
Speaker 6: Maybe you could just start a service. The Clay Center
3:24
Speaker 6: thing didn't work out.
3:24
Speaker 4: We just picked people up. How is that?
3:26
Speaker 7: I'm really into hustle culture. Don't temp me?
3:28
Speaker 4: All right?
3:28
Speaker 6: All right, all right, guys are getting ready for Carnival,
3:31
Speaker 6: is that right?
3:32
Speaker 7: Yes?
3:32
Speaker 3: So this is our fifteenth anniversary celebration of Carnival. This
3:36
Speaker 3: year's theme is Reflection, so it's kind of a play
3:39
Speaker 3: on wards. We're gonna be reflecting see what I did
3:41
Speaker 3: there and all the great work that we've accomplished over
3:44
Speaker 3: the years. Like, for example, this events raised around two
3:48
Speaker 3: point one million dollars since it started, so cumulatively that's
3:52
Speaker 3: done a lot for our operations. And that's no small
3:55
Speaker 3: feat because we've been able to bring awesome exhibits to
3:59
Speaker 3: our Discovery Museum. We've been able to launch Clay to Go,
4:02
Speaker 3: which has brought steam to communities all over West Virginia,
4:06
Speaker 3: those rural places that might not be able to easily
4:08
Speaker 3: go on a field trip to the Clay Center. And
4:12
Speaker 3: it's also brought amazing art to the Juliet Art Museum.
4:15
Speaker 3: If you haven't been recently, we have Warhol I'm talking
4:20
Speaker 3: beautiful big block prints.
4:22
Speaker 7: You should go see them.
4:23
Speaker 3: But anyway, back to Carnival, so reflection also means we're
4:27
Speaker 3: going to be dressing in sequins, crystals, we are shining
4:30
Speaker 3: it up. We're calling it black tie with a twist.
4:33
Speaker 3: So we expect people to come kind of in gallaware.
4:37
Speaker 3: But we also know that this is a very creative
4:39
Speaker 3: event for a lot of people, So we expect to
4:41
Speaker 3: see some really beautiful, shiny work come out of our
4:44
Speaker 3: patrons this year.
4:45
Speaker 4: And where and when is the event?
4:47
Speaker 7: January thirty first?
4:48
Speaker 4: Okay, all right, so we are going.
4:51
Speaker 3: To be having a couple of bands as usual.
4:54
Speaker 4: Have you been before, David, I have not.
4:58
Speaker 7: So close.
4:59
Speaker 4: This could be the ye though, Go ahead.
5:01
Speaker 3: Well, we have entertainment all through the museum. It's an
5:04
Speaker 3: entire building, experience, and it's surely one not to miss.
5:07
Speaker 3: I'm booking the entertainment right now and we have some
5:10
Speaker 3: great selections. It's going to be full of dancing. We're
5:14
Speaker 3: going to have a silent auction, and for the first year,
5:17
Speaker 3: that auction is featuring Appalachian art, which is really important,
5:21
Speaker 3: right that we got to feature our locals and that art.
5:25
Speaker 3: That art auction is going to go straight to helping
5:29
Speaker 3: our art museum keep bringing in like the Picassos, the Warhols,
5:34
Speaker 3: and the things that most people around here probably wouldn't
5:36
Speaker 3: get to see otherwise. I mean, when was the last
5:38
Speaker 3: time you saw a Warhol piece in person?
5:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's been a while.
5:43
Speaker 3: It's especially important because you know, like I said, I
5:46
Speaker 3: grew up in Clay County, and you know, I loved school,
5:49
Speaker 3: but there were a lot of kids that just don't
5:51
Speaker 3: love school.
5:52
Speaker 7: And but you know what they do love Dave, They
5:55
Speaker 7: love the Clay Center. They come in those or.
5:57
Speaker 4: They love getting out of class.
5:59
Speaker 3: Well the Clay Center is like fun class, but it
6:02
Speaker 3: is it is you have all these awesome exhibits.
6:04
Speaker 6: I mean, just if you had to put a guesstimate
6:06
Speaker 6: on it, I don't need an exact figure. How many
6:08
Speaker 6: school kids do you see every year to Clay Center.
6:10
Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, it's thousands. And that's no exaggeration because
6:14
Speaker 3: basically any Kadon County school can come on a field
6:17
Speaker 3: trip there. We have an agreement with local government that
6:20
Speaker 3: empowers every elementary school to have field trips there.
6:23
Speaker 7: So it's literally thousands of children.
6:25
Speaker 6: And it's not just Kenaw County. I mean there's other
6:28
Speaker 6: school systems that take part in this as well.
6:30
Speaker 3: Yes, we have children from all over the state come
6:32
Speaker 3: to the Clay Center. So it's really no exaggeration that
6:36
Speaker 3: your date night here at Carnival is making an impact.
6:41
Speaker 3: I mean, I think about all the mail we get.
6:44
Speaker 3: We get mail from children and families and classrooms and
6:47
Speaker 3: they're talking about how they love healthy me exhibit. We
6:51
Speaker 3: recently had a child talk about how they climbed up
6:54
Speaker 3: to the top of Ashton's climbing sculpture in the middle
6:57
Speaker 3: and he was like, only fell twice, but you know,
6:59
Speaker 3: they don't fall out.
7:00
Speaker 7: But for these kids, that's like an adrenaline.
7:02
Speaker 4: Rush better than I could do.
7:04
Speaker 7: Right, I can't.
7:05
Speaker 3: Even look at the thing without my joints hurt. And
7:08
Speaker 3: you know, we had this new space lab open earlier
7:10
Speaker 3: this year. Kids can create their own rocket, they get
7:13
Speaker 3: to drive a Perseverance on Mars, and there's a bunch
7:18
Speaker 3: of video games too where you can kind of create
7:20
Speaker 3: your own universe. And I'm not going to lie to you.
7:23
Speaker 3: As a grown woman, I really love that exhibit. So
7:27
Speaker 3: we need to keep things like Carnival going so that
7:30
Speaker 3: we can keep on track for kids in our local area.
7:33
Speaker 4: It's going to be paid for somehow.
7:35
Speaker 3: Yes, And you know Carnival, it's it's just more than
7:39
Speaker 3: just a party.
7:39
Speaker 4: Yeah.
7:40
Speaker 6: Well, and it's kind of like become one of those,
7:43
Speaker 6: if not the social event of the year in Charleston.
7:46
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you're going to bump into someone, you know.
7:48
Speaker 3: We've sold hundreds of tickets already in this event. It
7:50
Speaker 3: sells out every year. So when I say people need
7:53
Speaker 3: to be getting their tickets now, I'm not exaggerating.
7:56
Speaker 7: Now.
7:56
Speaker 3: I know as a normal person making normal people, it
8:00
Speaker 3: might seem expensive, but you got to keep in mind
8:03
Speaker 3: by the time that you take your significant other to
8:06
Speaker 3: a nice restaurant, you go do an activity like it
8:10
Speaker 3: adds up so by the end of that night, you're
8:12
Speaker 3: probably spending about what you pay for the carnival ticket
8:15
Speaker 3: and then some because that carnival ticket is all inclusive.
8:18
Speaker 3: You get there, we're gonna have catering from ten to ten.
8:21
Speaker 3: Your friends are going to be there. We've got good drinks,
8:24
Speaker 3: We've got great entertainment. I mean, we've got a DJ
8:28
Speaker 3: in two bands.
8:29
Speaker 6: Are you at liberty at this point to discuss who
8:31
Speaker 6: the entertainment is? If if not, it's fine. I just
8:34
Speaker 6: wanted to see kind of where we were. If not,
8:36
Speaker 6: I completely understand.
8:37
Speaker 3: I'm not at liberty to discuss yet. But if you
8:39
Speaker 3: follow our socials, then you'll be able to be the
8:42
Speaker 3: first to know.
8:42
Speaker 4: There you go.
8:43
Speaker 6: All right, We're talking with Sierre Marlin of the Clay
8:46
Speaker 6: Center about Carnival, which is coming up to January thirty.
8:48
Speaker 6: First to Dave Allen showing five eighty Live is Bronche.
8:50
Speaker 6: You aparted by Live Healthy West Virginia presented by WVU Medicine,

8:59

9:01
Speaker 6: see online or whatever for those that haven't attended in
9:05
Speaker 6: the past, and you see the how people go all
9:08
Speaker 6: out for this thing, and really not just Charleston, but
9:10
Speaker 6: all the West Virginia comes out for this thing.
9:12
Speaker 8: Man.
9:12
Speaker 4: It's really it's it's really something special.
9:15
Speaker 3: It's spectacular, and with this year being our fifteenth anniversary,
9:19
Speaker 3: we're hoping it's going to be the grandest celebration yet.
9:22
Speaker 3: And only you guys can make it that way by
9:24
Speaker 3: showing up. So don't leave me, hang in, go get
9:28
Speaker 3: your tickets.
9:28
Speaker 6: Indeed, indeed we're talking to Sierra Marlin from the Clay
9:32
Speaker 6: Center here on the Dave Allan Show on five to
9:35
Speaker 6: eighty line.
9:35
Speaker 4: The Voice Charleston wcchs.
9:37
Speaker 6: If people, what's the biggest I don't want to say misconception,
9:41
Speaker 6: that's not the word, But what's the biggest surprise from
9:44
Speaker 6: people when they co We know the kids are in
9:46
Speaker 6: wonder of everything, but I mean, what's the big what's
9:48
Speaker 6: when adults.
9:49
Speaker 4: Come to the Clay Center.
9:50
Speaker 6: What does the biggest their biggest surprise or something maybe
9:53
Speaker 6: that they weren't expecting.
9:54
Speaker 7: Well, actually, that's a really great question.
9:56
Speaker 3: I had a friend that moved here recently from South
9:58
Speaker 3: Carolina and she came to the Clay Center recently and
10:01
Speaker 3: she was just shocked at the volume of what was
10:04
Speaker 3: happening at the Clay Center. So the Clay Center is
10:06
Speaker 3: one of a few places here or really anywhere in
10:09
Speaker 3: the country that features steam everything. So we have an
10:13
Speaker 3: art museum, we have the Discovery Museum full of science exhibits,
10:17
Speaker 3: and we feature performances. A lot of people don't expect Broadway,
10:21
Speaker 3: for example, but we have an entire Broadway series. So
10:24
Speaker 3: we're bringing things like we had the Book of Mormon
10:27
Speaker 3: this year, Kinky Boots music Man's coming up, and we
10:31
Speaker 3: even have cool rentals. So for example, I don't know
10:34
Speaker 3: if you're a fan of the Princess Bride Dave, but
10:36
Speaker 3: we've got the Princess Bride coming up and carry Elways,
10:40
Speaker 3: Wesley the dashing Hero. He'll be there to answer questions
10:43
Speaker 3: for people, and that's something people just don't seem to
10:47
Speaker 3: expect in little old Charleston. We actually get some really
10:50
Speaker 3: great entertainment all under the same roof as a museum and.
10:55
Speaker 7: An art museum.
10:56
Speaker 6: People aren't Here's what I have learned that when people
10:58
Speaker 6: have that I've talked to you that have moved to
11:00
Speaker 6: the area. They have said, on numerous occasions to me
11:04
Speaker 6: and others they've said, I wasn't expecting something like that
11:07
Speaker 6: in Charleston, you know. I mean, you're expecting this is
11:09
Speaker 6: something that generally a facility like this is something you're
11:11
Speaker 6: gonna see in Columbus, you're gonna see in Pittsburgh, in Charlotte,
11:14
Speaker 6: you're not necessarily going to see it, as you said,
11:16
Speaker 6: in little old Charleston, West Virginia.
11:18
Speaker 3: Well, yeah, in the quality of our exhibits it matches
11:21
Speaker 3: that of these larger areas, and that's because we have
11:25
Speaker 3: such a great team who works really hard to find
11:27
Speaker 3: these things. Like we have an entire exhibition exhibit right
11:31
Speaker 3: now in the Discovery Museum on water, and you could
11:34
Speaker 3: learn about the importance of environmental protection clean water. But
11:39
Speaker 3: you're going through this maze like a water droplet. And
11:43
Speaker 3: this exhibit's gone through other larger museums, So there could
11:47
Speaker 3: be someone who maybe was in Columbus who would see
11:51
Speaker 3: something extremely similar or the same, because we're all working
11:53
Speaker 3: with the same people. Because the people on my team
11:56
Speaker 3: are just that talented, we don't skimp. We work really
12:00
Speaker 3: hard and hustle for these kids and for our patrons
12:03
Speaker 3: who come to events like Carnival. I was in a
12:05
Speaker 3: decor meeting yesterday, and we have such big stuff coming.
12:10
Speaker 3: I'm not liberty to tell you, but I can tell
12:14
Speaker 3: you it's shiny, it's festive, and it's going to be Dare.
12:19
Speaker 4: I say lit lit lit my favorite term.
12:23
Speaker 3: Well yeah, and you know, I'm a mom and I
12:27
Speaker 3: have two kids. They're a little old for Blippy now,
12:29
Speaker 3: but even recently we had Blippy kind of bring down
12:32
Speaker 3: the house. I mean, these kids were just so excited.
12:36
Speaker 3: And that's the level of impact we want to bring
12:38
Speaker 3: because from these small children up to Broadway, there's really
12:43
Speaker 3: something for everyone. If you look on our schedule, and
12:46
Speaker 3: if you don't understand the schedule, you can come to
12:48
Speaker 3: our ticketing booth and someone can walk you through what
12:51
Speaker 3: you might be into.
12:52
Speaker 6: I mean, one of the things I have noticed when
12:54
Speaker 6: I have attended events at Clay Center concerts and things
12:57
Speaker 6: of that nature too, is is your staff there, you know,
12:59
Speaker 6: the the folks who help you find your seat, your
13:01
Speaker 6: USh volunteers, you know, and so on and so forth.
13:04
Speaker 6: I mean, that's it's first class how you do that.
13:06
Speaker 6: And I love going to concerts there because I mean,
13:10
Speaker 6: you know, it's cliche and the music business say, or
13:12
Speaker 6: the entertainment business to say not a bad seat in
13:14
Speaker 6: the house, but there's really not. It's a great place
13:16
Speaker 6: to see a show.
13:17
Speaker 7: What's your favorite show you've attended their days?
13:19
Speaker 6: Actually, I will tell you probably, Oh, definitely Willie Nelson.
13:24
Speaker 6: I'm a you know, I'm a rednick. No, not really
13:27
Speaker 6: a redneck, but I like redneck music.
13:29
Speaker 4: How's that?
13:29
Speaker 3: Honestly, I totally get it. I know we've had zz Top,
13:33
Speaker 3: William Shatner stopped by five minute. I mean, we have
13:36
Speaker 3: had such great acts it's kind of hard for me
13:38
Speaker 3: to choose one. Recently, we had an a cappella group
13:42
Speaker 3: come through and I was so enamored by that, and
13:47
Speaker 3: they had this beautiful setup. I think people expect the
13:50
Speaker 3: stage to look one way, but for each performance it
13:52
Speaker 3: looks totally different. I mean, our stage crew works so
13:56
Speaker 3: hard to go from a ballet one weekend to a
13:59
Speaker 3: musical one another. It's kind of like movie magic, except
14:03
Speaker 3: it's stage magic.
14:04
Speaker 9: Right.
14:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, But I know it sounds boring when I say
14:08
Speaker 3: things like, oh, the funds from Carnival go to our
14:10
Speaker 3: operating budget.
14:12
Speaker 6: But you got to operate, yeah, yeah, yeah, and you
14:14
Speaker 6: got to have a budget to do so all right,
14:16
Speaker 6: we got to wrap it up. Give us the details
14:17
Speaker 6: in Carnival again, where people can get tickets to date,
14:20
Speaker 6: give us all the stuff.
14:21
Speaker 3: So Carnival is going to be the night of January
14:23
Speaker 3: thirty first, twenty twenty six, at the Clay Center for
14:25
Speaker 3: the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia, sponsored by the
14:28
Speaker 3: Ruth and Jostone Foundation and presented by Friends of Clay
14:31
Speaker 3: who support arts, education and community programs at the Clay Center.
14:34
Speaker 3: You can find tickets on our website Claycenter dot org.
14:38
Speaker 3: So and you can also see V one hundred on
14:41
Speaker 3: a little banner there. So either way you're going to
14:44
Speaker 3: get to come to the party. So join me there.
14:46

17:43
Speaker 8: Dave Allen, so great to be with you today.
17:45
Speaker 6: It you know when when you just throw my name
17:49
Speaker 6: out there and go, Dave Allen, I feel like I'm
17:50
Speaker 6: in trouble even.
17:51
Speaker 4: Though you're not here.
17:52
Speaker 8: Is that how your mom yells at you?
17:54
Speaker 4: Uh?
17:54
Speaker 6: And my wife yeah yeah, and my coworkers and my
17:57
Speaker 6: cat yeah. They all yell at me that one. So
17:59
Speaker 6: that's it's all good. So how are things up at
18:01
Speaker 6: Bridge Valley on this cold, not yet officially winter type day.
18:05
Speaker 4: What's going on up there? Weatherwise?
18:07
Speaker 8: It's finals week, so okay, everything's been plowed. But I
18:12
Speaker 8: was talking to a young lady yesterday in the elevator
18:14
Speaker 8: about her math final, and I feel like that's where
18:17
Speaker 8: everybody's head is not so much with the snow.
18:19
Speaker 4: M hmm. Yeah, those always fun math finals. You gotta
18:22
Speaker 4: love it, you gotta love it.
18:23
Speaker 13: That's right, all right.
18:24
Speaker 6: So you and I have spent some time doctor Sacks
18:27
Speaker 6: in the past talking about this cohort with Goldman Sachs,
18:31
Speaker 6: and understand you're about to graduate a class.
18:33
Speaker 8: Now we are. We have thirty seven people in a
18:36
Speaker 8: North Carolina cohort. So something that's been fun about this
18:39
Speaker 8: ten thousand small businesses program is that they've asked us
18:42
Speaker 8: to run cohorts all over the Appalachian region. So we've
18:46
Speaker 8: done West Virginia and southern Indiana and now North Carolina.
18:52
Speaker 8: The cohorts really incredible. They're in everything from aviation to hospitality,
18:56
Speaker 8: and they're making money and small businesses right here in
19:00
Speaker 8: the region.
19:01
Speaker 4: And when you say cohort.
19:02
Speaker 6: That's been kind of a buzz term in the world
19:04
Speaker 6: of business and educational last ten years.
19:06
Speaker 4: Explain what exactly a cohort is.
19:09
Speaker 8: It's just a small group of people who go through
19:11
Speaker 8: class together and then who help each other so they
19:13
Speaker 8: start doing business together and really working together. They get
19:17
Speaker 8: to know each other. It's having a community. It's exactly
19:20
Speaker 8: what you would have at your church or at your
19:22
Speaker 8: Lions club.
19:23
Speaker 6: That's kind of a high end networking for lack of
19:25
Speaker 6: a better term, right, everybody kind of working together on
19:27
Speaker 6: projects and whatnot.
19:29
Speaker 8: That's right. And in education we think about cohorts because
19:31
Speaker 8: you have a similar interest. So these people have a
19:34
Speaker 8: similar interest in growing small businesses.
19:36
Speaker 6: And you can learn a lot from each other especially
19:37
Speaker 6: and then when you say small businesses, you're speaking my
19:40
Speaker 6: language there, So I really enjoy talking about that. I
19:43
Speaker 6: want to talk about your Win Academy. You're having an
19:46
Speaker 6: open house right today.
19:48
Speaker 8: At five point thirty. It's here in Building two thousand
19:51
Speaker 8: at the Tech Park, and it's actually been really fun
19:54
Speaker 8: because our current high school students are bringing in other
19:56
Speaker 8: high schoolers to talk about the opportunities and to really
20:00
Speaker 8: showcase what they've been doing so it's very very student
20:02
Speaker 8: led and we're excited about that.
20:04
Speaker 6: And for those that don't understand, you're on with me
20:06
Speaker 6: a couple of times a month, but maybe somebody's listening
20:08
Speaker 6: for the first time.
20:09
Speaker 4: Explaining what the WIN Academy is.
20:10
Speaker 8: So, the WIN Academy is an early college high school.
20:13
Speaker 8: It's a public school, but students enroll in high school
20:17
Speaker 8: with us here at the WIN Academy and they take
20:19
Speaker 8: classes that are all sequenced to be able to complete
20:22
Speaker 8: an associates degree. So students who are in the WIN
20:25
Speaker 8: Academy are either working on classes to become a nurse
20:27
Speaker 8: or to go into advanced manufacturing technology.

20:44
Speaker 6: you don't know can hurt you. Talk about registration for
20:48
Speaker 6: the upcoming semester.
20:50
Speaker 13: Oh, so your.
20:51
Speaker 8: Last data register so classes start January twelfth. Your last
20:55
Speaker 8: data register is January eighth, and we're having an open
20:58
Speaker 8: registration that day, so folks can just walk in and
21:00
Speaker 8: talk to somebody. But all next week we have open advising.
21:04
Speaker 8: So if you want to come in and pop by,
21:05
Speaker 8: or if you've sort of thought about signing up for classes,
21:08
Speaker 8: now is a great time to do it.
21:10
Speaker 4: Now would be the time to do it. What's uh?
21:12
Speaker 14: Uh?
21:12
Speaker 8: What?
21:13
Speaker 4: What are student?
21:14
Speaker 6: You got a wide array of programs up there that
21:16
Speaker 6: are always popular with the students. But what's on the
21:20
Speaker 6: student's mind when it comes to registering? What's some of
21:22
Speaker 6: the todd I don't want you to rank them as
21:24
Speaker 6: to like what's better words, because they're all great, But
21:26
Speaker 6: what are some of the ones that that that you
21:28
Speaker 6: really like to talk about today?
21:29
Speaker 4: Some of the different classes.
21:30
Speaker 8: Our healthcare programs are very popular. You can do a
21:33
Speaker 8: flabotomy certification in just eight weeks, so that's a really
21:36
Speaker 8: short term. One CDL is similar. You can do that
21:39
Speaker 8: really quickly. Things that take longer like nursing or engineering,
21:43
Speaker 8: but those are also very popular. I would say a
21:46
Speaker 8: kind of top three big areas are in it manufacturing
21:50
Speaker 8: and healthcare.
21:51
Speaker 6: Talk about doctor Casey Sachs a Bridge Valley and you
21:54
Speaker 6: know with this snow that we've had on the ground,
21:56
Speaker 6: which I'm personally not a fan of. Sorry Joe Stevens
21:58
Speaker 6: from the Ski Association, who gets me every time I
22:00
Speaker 6: say that.
22:01
Speaker 4: But it's just it's a personal thing.
22:02
Speaker 6: I know that it's I know that it's needed, but
22:05
Speaker 6: it does kind of get people in the Christmas spirit.
22:08
Speaker 6: And you're going to be doing a holiday movie night
22:12
Speaker 6: in Montgomery.
22:13
Speaker 13: Right, we are.
22:14
Speaker 8: We have a great theater there in Davis Hall, and
22:16
Speaker 8: we love to be able to showcase things. So the
22:20
Speaker 8: nineteenth at five point thirty, bring little kids. We're going
22:23
Speaker 8: to show the Santa Claus and we expect that Santa
22:26
Speaker 8: is going to be making a guest appearance.
22:28
Speaker 4: All right, have you gotten your list of Sanna?
22:31
Speaker 8: You know, I think the reason Santa spends so much
22:33
Speaker 8: time in West Virginia is that he has to get
22:35
Speaker 8: his coal somewhere.
22:36
Speaker 4: Well there you go.
22:37
Speaker 6: And you know, somebody said the other day something about
22:39
Speaker 6: having coal in the stocking, and I said, look, I'm
22:40
Speaker 6: from southern West Virginia.
22:42
Speaker 4: We value that.
22:43
Speaker 6: We wanted colon the stocking because col in the stockument
22:47
Speaker 6: that dad was still working. That's that's that adds another
22:51
Speaker 6: story for another time. I was doctor I was reading
22:54
Speaker 6: an article and it had to do with the term
22:58
Speaker 6: professional degree and maybe maybe some talk of some changes
23:04
Speaker 6: coming in with that definition of professional degrees kind of
23:08
Speaker 6: break that down for us.
23:10
Speaker 8: Oh, you bet, it's a great question. There's been a
23:12
Speaker 8: lot in the news lately about professional programs, and there's
23:17
Speaker 8: a student loan category that we use that's called professional programs.
23:21
Speaker 8: It's for graduate school only, so it's not about students
23:24
Speaker 8: who are an undergraduate, which is everybody at Bridge Valley,
23:27
Speaker 8: so it doesn't affect my Bridge Valley students. But the
23:30
Speaker 8: professional program definition is tied to how much the federal
23:34
Speaker 8: government will will give somebody in student loans. So you
23:38
Speaker 8: may have heard about the student loan crisis and how
23:40
Speaker 8: much money has been out there and that people are
23:43
Speaker 8: struggling to repay it. And one of the things that
23:45
Speaker 8: the government has recognized is that they up to this
23:49
Speaker 8: point have went a whole lot of money to people
23:52
Speaker 8: who are going into programs where you could never reasonably
23:55
Speaker 8: expect to repay it. We don't want eighty year old
23:57
Speaker 8: people who are still repaying their student loans, and so
24:00
Speaker 8: professional programs has been a category that they've dialed back
24:05
Speaker 8: on and said only people who are going into dentistry
24:09
Speaker 8: or being lawyers or doctors can take out more than
24:12
Speaker 8: two hundred thousand dollars in federal student loans. That programs
24:16
Speaker 8: like social work, where we expect that your starting wage,
24:18
Speaker 8: even with the graduate school degree is going to be
24:21
Speaker 8: like sixty or seventy thousand dollars, shouldn't borrow that much.
24:25
Speaker 6: And you know, this has been a debate, and I
24:27
Speaker 6: don't want to turn this into a political discussion or
24:30
Speaker 6: anything like that, but this actually I was listening to
24:33
Speaker 6: at Snike on the on the Metro News morning show
24:36
Speaker 6: with the Chris Lawrence in the Morning News last hour,
24:38
Speaker 6: and he was talking about that paying back student loans,
24:41
Speaker 6: and it's been a hot button topic doctor Saxuell the last.
24:45
Speaker 4: Couple of last couple of years.
24:47
Speaker 8: It's true, and our student loan debt as a nation
24:50
Speaker 8: is tremendous. Most of it is from graduate student loans.
24:53
Speaker 8: So when you talk about people going to graduate school,
24:57
Speaker 8: but it is a it's a national conversation. And I
25:00
Speaker 8: do think the professional programs conversation is confused some people
25:04
Speaker 8: because so for example, nursing isn't in the category where
25:08
Speaker 8: you can take out those maximum loan limits of course,
25:11
Speaker 8: nursing as a professional program. It just doesn't meet that
25:14
Speaker 8: specific definition for loans.
25:17
Speaker 6: I got you, I'll catcha and you know it is
25:19
Speaker 6: again I'm going down a rabbit hole here that I hope,
25:21
Speaker 6: I hope that you're comfortable with and if not, then
25:23
Speaker 6: you can just do you know, we'll talk about snow
25:26
Speaker 6: or something. But this discussion, this national discussion on student
25:30
Speaker 6: loans has been has been such an issue.
25:33
Speaker 4: And one of the things.
25:33
Speaker 6: That I really like about about Bridge Valley and other
25:37
Speaker 6: institutions similar to yours is that you know, you're the
25:41
Speaker 6: employers are waiting on you as soon as you graduate.
25:44
Speaker 6: In many cases at Bridge Valley they're waiting on you
25:46
Speaker 6: before you graduate, and so you can if you got
25:50
Speaker 6: if you do have to pay something back, you can
25:51
Speaker 6: get right to it.
25:53
Speaker 8: That's right. Well, so fewer than one out of four
25:55
Speaker 8: of our students take loans at all. Most of our
25:57
Speaker 8: students don't need to take loans, so that we're really
26:00
Speaker 8: proud of that. But some of our students do need to.
26:02
Speaker 8: They want to go to school full time. It doesn't
26:04
Speaker 8: make sense to try and juggle, you know, their fast
26:08
Speaker 8: food job along with school and loans are appropriate for
26:11
Speaker 8: some people. But what I've told my own family, what
26:13
Speaker 8: I have told my own god kids who are in college,
26:16
Speaker 8: is that the total amount you borrow for school shouldn't
26:19
Speaker 8: be more than you expect to make in your first
26:21
Speaker 8: year out. So if you're looking at a profession where
26:24
Speaker 8: you're probably going to make sixty thousand dollars, you shouldn't
26:27
Speaker 8: borrow more than sixty thousand dollars.
26:29
Speaker 6: It would have been nice had somebody been having this conversation,
26:32
Speaker 6: you know, like ten, fifteen, twenty years ago.
26:34
Speaker 4: Perhaps you were, but you weren't here at the time,
26:36
Speaker 4: so but it would have And I don't mean that
26:38
Speaker 4: aimed toward Bridge Valley.
26:39
Speaker 6: I mean because you said, like less than one percent
26:41
Speaker 6: of your students are taking loans anyway, But I mean
26:44
Speaker 6: in general, if somebody would have been part of that
26:46
Speaker 6: little bit of wisdom on our youngsters, and I say
26:49
Speaker 6: that meaning college aged kids, maybe we wouldn't be in
26:52
Speaker 6: the situation that we're in now. But that's an editorial comment.
26:54
Speaker 6: I don't expect you to weigh in on that.
26:56
Speaker 8: It's good for whole families to know, because college going
26:59
Speaker 8: is a whole family conversation. And so if you're a
27:02
Speaker 8: grandfather or you're a grandmother and you're thinking about how
27:04
Speaker 8: to help your grandkids go to college, reminding the entire
27:08
Speaker 8: family that, yes, college is wonderful and you experience higher
27:12
Speaker 8: earnings almost always when you've gone to college, and we
27:15
Speaker 8: want people to do that. You don't want to borrow
27:18
Speaker 8: so much that it puts you underwater. And so the
27:20
Speaker 8: way you sort of make that decision is what job
27:22
Speaker 8: am I likely to get? And if the job that
27:25
Speaker 8: you're looking at or you're not sure, you're studying an
27:27
Speaker 8: area that's sort of not a clear career path, then
27:31
Speaker 8: you really don't want to borrow that much money for
27:33
Speaker 8: it because you want to have a clear sense if
27:35
Speaker 8: you're going to be able to pay it back.
27:37

30:38
Speaker 6: It's this I say it snowy Tuesday morning has a
30:40
Speaker 6: snowed in about twelve hours or so, but I will
30:42
Speaker 6: tell you that the side roads are still extremely slick.
30:47
Speaker 6: So if you are going to be traveled in at
30:48
Speaker 6: interstates in good shape. I came in around seven ish
30:53
Speaker 6: this morning, six forty five to seven interstates in good shape.
30:55
Speaker 5: Some of the.
30:56
Speaker 4: Exits are a little dicey.
30:58
Speaker 6: The one coming off the Interstate on Virginia Street into
31:01
Speaker 6: Charleston was will slick. But that's gonna be that way
31:06
Speaker 6: for a while. But temperatures are going to warm up
31:07
Speaker 6: and hopefully we'll get a little bit of a break
31:09
Speaker 6: in some of this stuff going onto the back roads
31:12
Speaker 6: as well. As I mentioned earlier, our interstate commute was fine.
31:15

Speaker 6: may want to check that out. I want to welcome
31:54
Speaker 6: to the show now Kenawa County School Superintendent, Doctor Paula
31:56
Speaker 6: Potter and doctor Potter.
31:57
Speaker 4: Good morning and welcome to the show.
32:00
Speaker 13: Good morning, thank you, thank you for being here.
32:01
Speaker 4: No school today for Kenawa County. An actual snow day.
32:05
Speaker 6: But I want to go back to yesterday, though quite
32:08
Speaker 6: and quite frankly, with all due respect to our meteorological folks,
32:11
Speaker 6: many of whom are good friends of mine, and one
32:13
Speaker 6: of those on TV last night said, hey, we.
32:15
Speaker 4: Kind of misjudged it.
32:16
Speaker 6: It happens at least as far as the amount of
32:19
Speaker 6: snow that we got. We simply got more most people
32:21
Speaker 6: would think than we thought we would. And it really
32:24
Speaker 6: puts school systems in a very precarious position, because you know,
32:30
Speaker 6: you're darned if you do, and you're darned if you
32:31
Speaker 6: don't talk about what goes into making the decisions about school,
32:36
Speaker 6: from delays to early dismissals to closing, et cetera.
32:39
Speaker 4: What goes into those decisions.
32:41
Speaker 13: Well, first of all, you know a lot of people
32:44
Speaker 13: commented yesterday. Of course, a lot of people would like
32:47
Speaker 13: to question my ability to make a decision for school,
32:51
Speaker 13: to have school or not school. We did miss it yesterday.
32:54
Speaker 13: We did follow weather reports. The weather report did say
32:57
Speaker 13: it was going to snow, They did say the temperature
33:00
Speaker 13: would drop, but all of that was estimated to happen
33:03
Speaker 13: at noon or later. Obviously it happened sooner, and our
33:08
Speaker 13: Transportation Department director, myself, bus drivers. At the time school started,
33:13
Speaker 13: it was clear to go. The weather report did still
33:16
Speaker 13: say it was going to be in the afternoon, so
33:18
Speaker 13: we discussed having school and if it did start snowing
33:21
Speaker 13: around noon, talk about a two hour early dismissal. However,
33:25
Speaker 13: it all started early. Not blaming anyone. Let's have a
33:28
Speaker 13: magic ball. But what we do is we listen to
33:31
Speaker 13: weather reports from the National Weather Service at eight o'clock
33:34
Speaker 13: at night when they have it, and we try to
33:36
Speaker 13: make the best decision. The last couple of times we've
33:39
Speaker 13: made those decisions, the snow has been predicted to start
33:43
Speaker 13: early in the morning, perhaps or after school starts. It
33:47
Speaker 13: makes the decision a little more difficult. I do like
33:52
Speaker 13: to remind everyone if you do live in an area
33:54
Speaker 13: or has started snowing and you don't feel it safe
33:58
Speaker 13: for you or your child to go out, you should
34:00
Speaker 13: stay home. We're trying to do the best we can.
34:04
Speaker 13: We try to make safety calls. But again I will
34:07
Speaker 13: own yesterday and you know, as I told other, people
34:11
Speaker 13: will just try to do better.
34:12
Speaker 6: When you say that for parents that they don't feel
34:16
Speaker 6: it's safe that they live in an area that's not
34:18
Speaker 6: been treated or you know of a hollow or back
34:21
Speaker 6: road or whatever. Does how does if there is school
34:24
Speaker 6: and parents opt to keep their kids home. And I'm
34:27
Speaker 6: speaking as a non parent here, so you're going to
34:28
Speaker 6: have to educate me, how does that work? As far
34:30
Speaker 6: as attendance policies correct.
34:32
Speaker 13: So we do have strict attendance policies. West Virginia Code
34:36
Speaker 13: requires that we take attendance once a student reaches fifteen
34:40
Speaker 13: unexcused absences. In code, we're supposed to file paperwork at
34:44
Speaker 13: madrist A court for our accountability measures. If a student
34:48
Speaker 13: miss the school, it counts against us regardless of the situation. However,
34:53
Speaker 13: we can code and absence that reflects transportation or web
35:00
Speaker 13: the related issues. And so while we appreciate parents following
35:05
Speaker 13: our guide, we know it's most important for students to
35:08
Speaker 13: be in school to learn, but we don't expect that
35:11
Speaker 13: at the safety of anyone. So if they could call
35:14
Speaker 13: the school, we could code their absence, you know, for
35:17
Speaker 13: weather related events. I don't ever think we're going to
35:21
Speaker 13: get to fifteen of those that would require someone to
35:24
Speaker 13: go to court, but you know, when those situations arise,
35:28
Speaker 13: we have to work with the family's individual to find
35:30
Speaker 13: out what's happening and how we can improve attendance if needed.
35:33
Speaker 6: I wonder and again we're talking with doctor Paula Potter,
35:36
Speaker 6: Superdend Kenton County Schools. In this world of remote learning
35:40
Speaker 6: that really kicked in, you know, unfortunately with COVID a
35:42
Speaker 6: couple of years ago. If a maybe I'm just throwing
35:44
Speaker 6: out scenarios here that are on realistic, but if a
35:47
Speaker 6: if a person or parent has a child that is
35:50
Speaker 6: in an area that it's simply they don't deem that
35:52
Speaker 6: it's safe to go to school, is there a remote
35:55
Speaker 6: learning option for that child that day or they just
35:57
Speaker 6: could There.
35:57
Speaker 13: Could be it depends on if the teacher has uploaded
36:00
Speaker 13: or not. But we do provide makeup work for students.
36:03
Speaker 13: If something would happen and the teacher didn't have it updated,
36:06
Speaker 13: or they're changing units, or whatever the issue may be.
36:09
Speaker 13: They might be in the middle of a project. If
36:12
Speaker 13: the parent calls the school, we can make sure that
36:14
Speaker 13: we provide them makeup work so that they are caught
36:18
Speaker 13: right back up to where they need to be.
36:19
Speaker 6: And I think sometimes and this is not exclusive to
36:22
Speaker 6: Kanawa County, this is just our society today and we
36:24
Speaker 6: can go on a you know, we can spend two
36:26
Speaker 6: or three days talking about this social media. In many cases,
36:30
Speaker 6: it's the best thing that happened to us, and it's
36:32
Speaker 6: the worst thing that.
36:32
Speaker 4: Happened to us.
36:33
Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, you know it is. It is disheartening sometimes.
36:37
Speaker 13: I think most people can attribute to that. If you
36:40
Speaker 13: work in any type of field, that people can, I
36:45
Speaker 13: don't know, complain about your decision making. Again, I am
36:50
Speaker 13: not perfect. We aren't perfect. We try to, you know,
36:53
Speaker 13: be the best that we can, but that isn't good
36:56
Speaker 13: enough many times. But I am thankful that I know
36:59
Speaker 13: what was hurt yesterday, We did have some buses that
37:02
Speaker 13: went into some ditches on the roads. Thankfully, the bus
37:05
Speaker 13: drivers nor the students were hurt, and so we are
37:10
Speaker 13: thankful for that. We are thankful that the students did
37:13
Speaker 13: get home in time, even though we made the decision
37:16
Speaker 13: to have school yesterday. But again, we just go off
37:21
Speaker 13: of the weather report. We understand that all isn't you know,
37:25
Speaker 13: people did say, well, it did say that it was
37:26
Speaker 13: going to snow. It did. We had a little bit
37:29
Speaker 13: more information when it was supposed to start, and you know,
37:33
Speaker 13: had heard a few weather people who I'm good friends
37:35
Speaker 13: with do say, just kind of missed the mark. We
37:37
Speaker 13: aren't Mother Nature. I had people call to complain that
37:40
Speaker 13: their roads are never treated, and I hate that for people.
37:44
Speaker 13: But we have a huge county. Our transportation department does
37:48
Speaker 13: excellent work. They went out as early as three o'clock
37:52
Speaker 13: in the morning on days that there's questionable weather and
37:54
Speaker 13: drive all of our routes throughout the entire county, especially
37:57
Speaker 13: the ones that don't have that we do know are
38:02
Speaker 13: typically trouble areas, and that's how we base our decision.
38:05
Speaker 13: We don't just base a decision off of being in Charleston.
38:09
Speaker 6: We talked about the bus treke level was going to
38:11
Speaker 6: be one of the things I was going to ask
38:13
Speaker 6: you because I saw some pictures floating around social media,
38:15
Speaker 6: as I'm sure you did well, and some were reported
38:17
Speaker 6: probably by the news organizations as well. So you're saying
38:21
Speaker 6: that there were a few bus tricks approximately how many I.
38:24
Speaker 13: Believe there were three that I don't want to make
38:26
Speaker 13: that efficient. That's right, Transportation Director. I do know a
38:30
Speaker 13: three specifically, and they weren't considered really. I mean, it
38:33
Speaker 13: was in a ditch, but again, you know, just kind
38:36
Speaker 13: of slid to the side of the road and had
38:37
Speaker 13: to be pulled out, which is something that we never
38:40
Speaker 13: want to have happened. I'm sure that it was you know,
38:43
Speaker 13: disheartening for students that were on the bus. Our transportation
38:46
Speaker 13: department very quickly made phone calls to parents of the
38:49
Speaker 13: students on the bus to let them know that they
38:51
Speaker 13: were safe, but there would be some delay, you know,
38:54
Speaker 13: in getting them home. But again, everybody was delivered home safely.
39:00
Speaker 13: Even though we many people felt we should have canceled school,
39:05
Speaker 13: and probably should have in hindsight, because it did come
39:09
Speaker 13: quicker and much more than we expected. I did make
39:12
Speaker 13: the decision yesterday after the two hour delay, not to
39:15
Speaker 13: have school today because the temperatures weren't supposed to be
39:19
Speaker 13: about freezing until noon. I think now that's switched to
39:22
Speaker 13: maybe nine thirty or ten. So I'm sure there'll be
39:25
Speaker 13: questions of why we canceled it today.
39:27
Speaker 6: Always always, I mean, look at how many times, how
39:30
Speaker 6: many times have you been in education for a while,
39:32
Speaker 6: and I've been in media for you know, for for
39:34
Speaker 6: some time. How many times have school systems said, okay,
39:37
Speaker 6: we're not going to have school, trying to be you know,
39:39
Speaker 6: an abundance of caution and then it doesn't. It's not
39:43
Speaker 6: as bad, you know, as what you thought. And then
39:45
Speaker 6: you're all looking at each other going, you know, well,
39:48
Speaker 6: you know we could have had school today. I mean,
39:49
Speaker 6: you're simply not going to please everybody. But I also
39:52
Speaker 6: understand too that you understand as a that you know,
39:56
Speaker 6: when parents are trying to make decisions, and it's not
39:59
Speaker 6: just about we don't live in an age anymore where
40:02
Speaker 6: dad goes off to work and mom stays home and
40:04
Speaker 6: he raises the kids. So I mean, everybody's got daycare issues.
40:07
Speaker 6: They've got Okay, my kid gets out, what am I
40:09
Speaker 6: going to do? One of our employees here yesterday their
40:13
Speaker 6: their school dismissed early, and so you know, this person
40:17
Speaker 6: was scrambling around yesterday trying to figure out what they
40:19
Speaker 6: were going to do. This was actually a private school,
40:22
Speaker 6: but they were trying to scramble around what they were
40:23
Speaker 6: going to do.
40:24
Speaker 4: So, but you can.
40:24
Speaker 6: Appreciate it does put everybody in a a very in
40:28
Speaker 6: a very bad position.
40:29
Speaker 13: And for as many complaints that we have, I also
40:32
Speaker 13: received calls, you know, from the from people that are
40:35
Speaker 13: at work and do need us because they don't have
40:38
Speaker 13: another means for their child. We also really look after
40:43
Speaker 13: it's been on a long break or over a weekend.
40:45
Speaker 13: You know, many of our students don't receive hot meals
40:49
Speaker 13: at home or three meals a day, or the last
40:51
Speaker 13: hot meal they had might have been on Friday at school,
40:53
Speaker 13: so we weigh in a lot of issues for students. Again,
40:58
Speaker 13: I don't want to take light of the fact that
41:00
Speaker 13: people were upset feeling that I put their child's safety
41:03
Speaker 13: at danger yesterday. That was never our intent. I think
41:06
Speaker 13: it did happen, but we would never make a decision
41:10
Speaker 13: just to have school and not take into consideration someone's safety.
41:14
Speaker 13: That would never ever cross my mind. That did happen yesterday,
41:17
Speaker 13: and I've apologized profusely for that. But again, we go
41:22
Speaker 13: off of weather reports, and you know, that's just the
41:26
Speaker 13: best that we can do. And I know that doesn't
41:28
Speaker 13: meet everyone's needs, it doesn't check everyone's boxes. But I
41:31
Speaker 13: do try to remind people even though we certainly appreciate
41:35
Speaker 13: you making the taking the importance of getting your children
41:38
Speaker 13: to school every day, if it isn't safe for you
41:41
Speaker 13: to do that, we recognize your ability to make that
41:44
Speaker 13: decision as a parent. We want to work together with
41:47
Speaker 13: people not in direct conflict with anybody we had.
41:52
Speaker 4: A text here.
41:52
Speaker 6: This might make you feel good. So doctor Potter can
41:55
Speaker 6: rest assured. No one is questioning why school was canceled today.
41:58
Speaker 4: So there you go there, Oh, well.
41:59
Speaker 13: Good, No one's questioning one in a row that I
42:03
Speaker 13: might frame it.
42:05
Speaker 2: I did.
42:05
Speaker 6: I'll take a picture of the of the text and
42:07
Speaker 6: they'll send it to you. I didn't want to ask
42:09
Speaker 6: a question because you and then we'll let you go.
42:10
Speaker 6: Know you're busy, book, But but you brought up something
42:13
Speaker 6: about the about the food aspect of it, and and
42:16
Speaker 6: tragically you are You are right, many of these kids
42:21
Speaker 6: that's the only hot meal that they are going to get. Now,
42:24
Speaker 6: does that mean that you jeopardize their life and everyone
42:27
Speaker 6: else to get them there? No, absolutely, But but it's
42:29
Speaker 6: something I think that has to be has to weigh
42:31
Speaker 6: into the equation.
42:32
Speaker 13: One well, factors exactly. We have weather reports, national weather reports,
42:36
Speaker 13: the transportation departments out driving the routes the way you know,
42:40
Speaker 13: and our students and their families, uh emails from families
42:45
Speaker 13: saying they're working, they have nowhere else to send their kids.
42:47
Speaker 13: There's many factors that play into it. But again I
42:51
Speaker 13: hope people understand. I know not everyone knows me, but
42:54
Speaker 13: I would never intentionally make a decision to harm anyone
42:59
Speaker 13: or put their safety at risk. I know that seems
43:02
Speaker 13: counterproductive to what happened yesterday, but my intent was not
43:07
Speaker 13: to have school so that somebody's safety was in danger
43:09
Speaker 13: when they left.
43:10
Speaker 6: And of course you have all these internet you know,
43:14
Speaker 6: conspiracies and so and it's not just Kanawa County. I mean,
43:16
Speaker 6: it goes all he goes all over the country, I'm sure.
43:18
Speaker 6: But we had like somebody that said something about does
43:21
Speaker 6: Knaw County Schools have an internal policy against calling for
43:25
Speaker 6: snow days?
43:25
Speaker 4: Obviously you don't, because you just did.
43:27
Speaker 13: Correct, you know, we don't. You know, I've had some
43:30
Speaker 13: former students that will make comments, you know, I'm never
43:33
Speaker 13: going to call off school. Just I think they're joking
43:36
Speaker 13: about it. Because I am typically very consistent and have
43:40
Speaker 13: high expectations. I operated that way when I was a principal.
43:46
Speaker 13: But that to say that I'm never going to have
43:48
Speaker 13: a snow day is not the case. I have made
43:51
Speaker 13: comments We're going to go to school when we can
43:53
Speaker 13: go to school. That's been construed to me saying we're
43:56
Speaker 13: never going to have a snow day, or if I
43:59
Speaker 13: can drive to work. Other people can drive to work.
44:01
Speaker 13: I've never said that. I've said I can park at
44:03
Speaker 13: the bottom of my driveway so that I can get
44:07
Speaker 13: to work if I need to get to work. But again,
44:10
Speaker 13: I understand people's frustration. Like you said, if people were
44:13
Speaker 13: working yesterday and they had to leave work to get
44:15
Speaker 13: their child, if they were put in any harm's way,
44:19
Speaker 13: I do understand everyone's frustration. No one likes to feel unsafe,
44:24
Speaker 13: and again, all I can do is apologize for that.
44:26
Speaker 13: We will try to do better in the future and
44:31
Speaker 13: move forward.
44:32
Speaker 6: Doctor Paula Potter, We're going to leave you with this.

44:56

44:59
Speaker 13: to end their first semester of school. They're getting ready
45:03
Speaker 13: for their mid semester assessments and all of the students
45:07
Speaker 13: have been and teachers have been working so hard to
45:10
Speaker 13: prepare for that so that we can show that students
45:13
Speaker 13: are growing academically since the beginning of the school year.
45:15

Speaker 6: one destination for every generation Generations Forward see dealer for details,
48:38
Speaker 6: you know. And it's it's not the one of the
48:43
Speaker 6: great things. One of the things me and a weather
48:45
Speaker 6: geek I will say this is it's still from time
48:47
Speaker 6: to time mother nature gonna do what mother nature gonna do,
48:51
Speaker 6: and nearly and this again is not a slam on
48:54
Speaker 6: our folks with the weather Service or neither local you know,
48:56
Speaker 6: TV meteorologist or the app on your phone or whatever.
49:00
Speaker 6: They simply got it wrong yesterday. And it happens from
49:03
Speaker 6: time to time. We live in an age where we
49:05
Speaker 6: have the top of the line technology to predict what
49:09
Speaker 6: things are gonna happen, and then sometimes they don't. And
49:12
Speaker 6: I feel for these school systems for trying to make
49:15
Speaker 6: a decision that's going to keep kids and others safe,
49:20
Speaker 6: but also try to make everybody happy. And when you
49:23
Speaker 6: add in social media, it's even worse. And like in
49:27
Speaker 6: Putnam County yesterday, they made the decision to not dismiss early,
49:32
Speaker 6: to keep the kids in school, and they were getting
49:36
Speaker 6: blistered yesterday because and again they went off what the
49:39
Speaker 6: weather report said. The weather report said that they were
49:42
Speaker 6: better off in school at let's just say three o'clock
49:45
Speaker 6: than what they would have been dismissing them. And it
49:47
Speaker 6: turns out that was wrong, and there was some there
49:50
Speaker 6: was some reported bus accidents in Putnam County yesterday as well.
49:53
Speaker 6: They also canceled school today. So you're not gonna get
49:55
Speaker 6: it right. One of the things, though, I will say
49:58
Speaker 6: yesterday is I was reading some of these comments online
50:04
Speaker 6: and they were in Putnam County specifically, a county school
50:09
Speaker 6: system that has always prided itself on discipline and so
50:13
Speaker 6: on and so forth. And look, I've been in the
50:14
Speaker 6: schools over there doing various things. They do a great
50:17
Speaker 6: job with the schools there. The number of students that
50:20
Speaker 6: were commenting, let us go home, Uh, aren't you supposed
50:26
Speaker 6: to be in school. Aren't you supposed to be in
50:28
Speaker 6: class with your phone up? And you know this wasn't
50:31
Speaker 6: mom and Dad's because look at their names, you know,
50:35
Speaker 6: I mean they weren't named you know, the old people
50:37
Speaker 6: named like Dave. You know, I mean they all had
50:39
Speaker 6: young people were the students were commenting, we need to
50:43
Speaker 6: go home.
50:44
Speaker 4: Here's some idea. Put the phone up, and why do
50:46
Speaker 4: you hear the phone out to begin with? In school?
50:49
Speaker 6: But you know, again, it's a very difficult decision for
50:52
Speaker 6: these school systems, and they're not going to get it
50:55
Speaker 6: right every time, and yesterday it was one of those times.
50:56
Speaker 6: And I commend doctor Paula Potter for saying as such.

51:11
Speaker 6: I went shopping this weekend. Couldn't believe the prices on
51:14
Speaker 6: everything from household goods to clothing. We already knew food
51:16
Speaker 6: was off the rails, but this was a shock.
51:19
Speaker 4: As a texture. Tex says. Let me see here.
51:25
Speaker 6: Tex says, I've got some farmers are waking up or
51:28
Speaker 6: leave to beginning welfare checks to keep their businesses afloat
51:30
Speaker 6: too bad. Farmers will continue to support the person and
51:32
Speaker 6: the policies that got them there in the first place. Texas,
51:37
Speaker 6: it seems PIA is going to be raised this year,
51:39
Speaker 6: and a couple of more raised this year in a
51:41
Speaker 6: couple more years, then a couple more years after that,
51:44
Speaker 6: ending with seven percent raised on prices. Hopefully there will
51:47
Speaker 6: be some pay raises in those years. Tex says weather reports.
51:53
Speaker 6: Can people read radars? There are so many options out there,
51:58
Speaker 6: text says Dave. Before people vote next year, please check
52:02
Speaker 6: the facts on West Virginia's economy. It's gotten worse than
52:05
Speaker 6: the last thirteen years before. Affordability for utilities and food
52:09
Speaker 6: and low wages.
52:10
Speaker 4: All right, we gotta go.
52:12
Speaker 6: Thank you so much for my guest today, doctor Casey Sachs,
52:14
Speaker 6: Folks from the Clay Center, Sierra are a good friend,
