- 0:00Something shifted in the last 48 hours, and the
- 0:02market knows it. The Trump -Xi summit in Washington,
- 0:05wrapped with a trade truce extension, the two
- 0:07sides agreed to push the deadline to January
- 0:0910, 2027, kicking the hard tariff questions down
- 0:12the road again. No sweeping new deal. No tariff
- 0:15rollbacks. Just more time on the clock. Markets
- 0:20got exactly what they expected and reacted accordingly
- 0:23with a collective shoulder shrug. The S &P 500
- 0:25is sitting at 7 ,704 today. roughly flat since
- 0:30our last briefing. That's the story of this market
- 0:32right now, not fear, not euphoria, just equilibrium.
- 0:37When the biggest geopolitical event of the week
- 0:39lands with a whimper, that tells you something
- 0:42about where investor positioning already was.
- 0:45Brent crude is now the most contested data point
- 0:47in the room. The National reports at near $105
- 0:50a barrel, while other feed sources are closer
- 0:52to 99. The range tells you the headline risk
- 0:55on Hormuz is still real, and we'll get into exactly
- 0:58where that stands in the commodity block. Let's
- 1:00get into it. Indices as of September 25. The
- 1:04S and P500 closed at 7 ,704, essentially flat.
- 1:09The Nikkei 225 jumped to 66 ,364. That's a gain
- 1:14of about 1 .3%, as Japanese equities continued
- 1:17their post -Bank of Japan adjustment run. The
- 1:20Hang Seng dropped to 24 ,469 down on the day.
- 1:24The DAX came in at 25 ,266, also lower. The divergence
- 1:29matters. Japan is catching a bid as the yen stabilizes
- 1:32and the BOJ's rate path becomes slightly clearer.
- 1:35China -linked assets are under pressure because
- 1:37the Trump -Xi summit, while not a failure, was
- 1:39definitively not a win. No tariff relief, no
- 1:42technology export thaw. The yuan weakened against
- 1:45the dollar as the summit unfolded, according
- 1:47to Reuters. That's your forward signal on the
- 1:49Hang Seng and China exposed equities. On the
- 1:52sector rotation front, Reuters reported that
- 1:55as of September 24, six of the 11S and P500 sectors
- 1:59finished lower while energy gained 1%. That's
- 2:03not broad risk on behavior. That's a market that's
- 2:06still sorting out whether Hormuz diplomacy changes
- 2:08the oil equation and rotating toward energy while
- 2:11it waits. What to watch? Big bank earnings season
- 2:14is on the horizon in October. The narrative right
- 2:17now is rate spread expansion versus credit quality
- 2:20degradation. Both thesis cases are being held
- 2:23open simultaneously. That tension resolves with
- 2:26the October 2 jobs number. The Fed confirmed
- 2:29its 25 basis point hike on September 16. The
- 2:33federal funds rate now sits at 3 .75 to 4%. That's
- 2:37locked. The next FOMC decision is October 27
- 2:41through 28. And between now and then, the market
- 2:44has two major data inputs. September jobs on
- 2:47October 2, and September CPI on October 14. The
- 2:5210 -year Treasury yield came in at 4 .25 % on
- 2:55September 23, according to the U .S. Treasury's
- 2:58daily yield curve data. That is a notable compression
- 3:00from the range of 4 .43 % to 4 .97 % we were
- 3:04watching during the September 14 through 23 run.
- 3:07The yield has stepped back. Bond buyers showed
- 3:10up. The question is why. Two competing reads.
- 3:14First, the market is front -running a Fed pause.
- 3:17The dot plot from September pointed to a 2027
- 3:19median of 3 .6%, the clearest pivot signal the
- 3:22Fed has produced this cycle. Bond markets may
- 3:25be locking in those gains now before more hike
- 3:27talk clouds the picture. Second read, global
- 3:30capital is flowing back into U .S. treasuries
- 3:33as a safe harbor while the Hormuz situation remains
- 3:35unresolved. Those aren't mutually exclusive.
- 3:38The ECB confirmed its deposit rate at 2 .5%.
- 3:42Effective September 16. The Bank of Japan's complementary
- 3:46deposit rate is 1 .25%. Effective September 24.
- 3:50Neither central bank gave markets anything new
- 3:53to process today. The global rate cycle is in
- 3:55a holding pattern. Everyone is waiting for the
- 3:57Americans. The yield curve is still inverted,
- 4:00with the 2, year above the 10, year. Watch the
- 4:0310, year closely into the jobs number. a strong
- 4:06payrolls figure could push yields back toward
- 4:084 .6 or higher, repricing the October FOMC calculus.
- 4:13The dollar is broadly firmer today, and the ECB
- 4:16reference rates reflect it. For the Nomad audience,
- 4:19here is the full FX snapshot as of September
- 4:2225, sourced from ECB daily parodies and cross
- 4:25-referenced foreign exchange feeds. Dollar to
- 4:28Philippine peso, 71 .33. That is meaningfully
- 4:32weaker for the peso compared to the 62 .54 reading
- 4:36we had on September 23. A significant shift driven
- 4:39partly by the stronger dollar and partly by local
- 4:42political noise around the Marcos administration's
- 4:44fiscal outlook. Anyone planning cash flow in
- 4:46Manila should note that buffer. Dollar to Indonesian
- 4:50rupiah, 20 ,384. That's the ECB reference figure.
- 4:54A weaker rupiah in this range reflects both regional
- 4:57dollar strength and ongoing concerns about Bank
- 4:59Indonesia's ability to hold the line without
- 5:01further rate action. Dollar to Thai bot, 38 .06.
- 5:06The bot has come off considerably from the 33,
- 5:09handle we saw earlier this month. The gap widens
- 5:12as the Fed bot rate differential plays out. Dollar
- 5:15to Malaysian ringgit, 4 .65, still elevated.
- 5:19Bank Negara has been intervening selectively.
- 5:22Dollar to Brazilian real. 5 .89. The real is
- 5:26under pressure, Brazilian fiscal deficit concerns
- 5:28continued away, and Lula's government has not
- 5:31yet delivered a credible medium -term spending
- 5:33path. Peruvian sol was not captured in the primary
- 5:36reference source today. As of our last briefing,
- 5:39PEN was at 3 .36. Flag that as an approximate
- 5:42holdover. For anyone whose income is in dollars
- 5:45but whose costs are in pesos, baht, or rupiah,
- 5:49this environment is actually favorable. A stronger
- 5:52dollar means your purchasing power in Manila,
- 5:55Bangkok, and Jakarta is up. But if you're holding
- 5:58local currency savings, you're losing ground.
- 6:01Bitcoin is at $84 ,589 as of September 25, up
- 6:06about 1 .6 % on the day. Ethereum is at $2 ,704,
- 6:11up 2 .35%. Solana is at $118, up 4 .5%. The aggregate
- 6:18direction is positive. But the more interesting
- 6:21story is what BTC is not doing. It is not breaking
- 6:25higher in a decisive way despite the gold rally
- 6:27we've been tracking and despite what appeared
- 6:30to be a favorable macro backdrop heading into
- 6:32the Trump -Xi summit. Our prior briefing noted
- 6:36a record high correlation between BTC and gold.
- 6:39That correlation appears to be testing now. Gold
- 6:42has pulled back modestly from its recent 4 ,300
- 6:45to 4 ,383 range, and BTC is moving sideways to
- 6:49slightly higher. If BTC begins diverging meaningfully
- 6:52upward from gold during a gold consolidation,
- 6:55that could signal a reemergence of crypto -specific
- 6:58demand, which would be a notable shift from the
- 7:00macro -correlated trading we've seen since the
- 7:02Fed's hike cycle began. Solana's outperformance
- 7:05today, up nearly 4 .5%, is worth noting. SOL
- 7:10tends to be more sensitive to retail and developer
- 7:12sentiment than BTC or ETH. A strong SOL day sometimes
- 7:16precedes broader alt -season conditions. One
- 7:19day is not a trend. But it's a flag to watch
- 7:22over the next 48 to 72 hours. The crypto legislative
- 7:26front remains quiet following the Senate's September
- 7:2816 failure to advance the Clarity Act. No new
- 7:32markup is scheduled before the October recess.
- 7:35Brent Crude is navigating two headlines that
- 7:37are pointing in opposite directions, and the
- 7:40price reflects the tension. According to The
- 7:42National, Brent is near $105 a barrel today.
- 7:45Other feed sources show it closer to $99. That
- 7:49spread is unusual. It tells you the market hasn't
- 7:51yet reached consensus on how to price the Hormuz
- 7:54diplomatic track. Here's the situation. According
- 7:57to Reuters, U .S. and Iranian negotiators are
- 8:00discussing a phased deal in which Iran would
- 8:03reopen the strait and the U .S. would lift its
- 8:06military blockade. Al Jazeera confirms the UNGA
- 8:09-facilitated talks concluded without a final
- 8:11agreement. The two sides are described as still
- 8:13far apart. That matters. As long as talks are
- 8:16active but unresolved, Brent holds a geopolitical
- 8:19risk premium. The moment a deal closes or definitively
- 8:22collapses, you get a sharp move in one direction.
- 8:25A confirmed reopening is a relief trade that
- 8:27could push Brent down $8 to $12 in a session.
- 8:30A collapse in talks. especially with Houthi attacks
- 8:33resuming against Saudi infrastructure, is a rapid
- 8:36spike toward 115 or higher. We are holding Hormuz
- 8:40at signal 4, immediate risk, actively monitoring.
- 8:43This is the single most consequential variable
- 8:46in energy markets right now. Gold is at $4 ,271
- 8:50to $4 ,304 per ounce today, according to the
- 8:54National and Exchange Rates UK. That's a step
- 8:57back from the 4 ,383 record we tracked on September
- 9:0023. The consolidation is orderly. Central bank
- 9:04buying remains the structural floor here. Nothing
- 9:07from the World Gold Council or central bank filings
- 9:09changes the underlying demand picture. The pullback
- 9:12looks like profit -taking, not a trend reversal.
- 9:16Thailand's destination Thailand visa remains
- 9:18active. The 60 -day exemption revocation that
- 9:21took effect September 15 means you now need the
- 9:24full DTV application if you're planning a remote
- 9:27work stay. Proof of income, employment verification,
- 9:30and remote work documentation are all required.
- 9:33The Thai consulate's guidance was updated September
- 9:351, so the current requirements are clear. If
- 9:38you've been on rolling 60, day entries, your
- 9:40window is closed, DTV is now the path. Malaysia's
- 9:44DE Rantau Pass is still open for applications,
- 9:47but MDEC's official platform is flagging delays
- 9:50due to technical issues. If you're waiting on
- 9:52a DE Rantau approval, build in a longer runway.
- 9:56The Q1 2027 backlog we reported earlier has not
- 9:59cleared. The Philippines Digital Nomad Visa Framework
- 10:02authorized under Executive Order 86 is live.
- 10:05The framework allows eligible foreign nationals
- 10:08to stay temporarily while working remotely for
- 10:10clients or employers outside the Philippines.
- 10:13Manila is making a clear signal to the nomad
- 10:15community. For anyone in the Southeast Asia orbit,
- 10:19Thailand is the most operationally mature option
- 10:22right now. Philippines is the most promising
- 10:24emerging one. Malaysia is in limbo until the
- 10:27tech issues resolve. Three developments in the
- 10:29next 24 to 72 hours. Here's what to watch and
- 10:32what moves the needle. Number one, September
- 10:36jobs report, Friday, October 2, 8 .30 a .m. Eastern.
- 10:40Signal four. This is the single most important
- 10:43near -term input for the October FOMC calculus.
- 10:46The August number came in at 162 ,000 payrolls.
- 10:51A September print above $180 ,000 with wages
- 10:53ticking up reopens the hike debate for October
- 10:5527. A print below $140 ,000 solidifies the pause
- 11:00thesis and likely sends the 10 -year yield toward
- 11:034%. The employment picture has been the Fed's
- 11:06tiebreaker all cycle. October 2 is not a number
- 11:09to miss. Signal 4. The Reuters -reported phased
- 11:16deal framework between the U .S. and Iran has
- 11:18no announced timeline for conclusion. Any confirmed
- 11:21breakthrough before markets open on Monday dramatically
- 11:24changes the energy and equity picture, a relief
- 11:27trade that would affect Brent, the energy sector,
- 11:29and inflation expectations simultaneously. Watch
- 11:33for statements out of Qatar, which has been the
- 11:35primary mediator. Number three, Trump -Xi post
- 11:39-summit fallout, tariff and technology details.
- 11:42Signal three, the trade truce extension to January
- 11:4510, 2027 was the headline. But the secondary
- 11:49story is what the two sides actually agreed to
- 11:52in the room beyond the date extension. Semiconductor
- 11:55export rules, agriculture purchase commitments,
- 11:57and currency management language are all in play.
- 12:01Any leak of specific terms that goes beyond what
- 12:04was publicly announced could move equities, particularly
- 12:06tech and semiconductor names, before markets
- 12:09open Monday. Stay in your positions. Stay in
- 12:12the data. That's the signal.
