- 0:01It is difficult for an individual to see his own
- 0:03shortcomings or faults. Many times we see them reflected
- 0:08in others and we externalize them to such a degree that we
- 0:12take exception to the other person, not recognizing that we
- 0:16are seeing our own faults displayed in front of us.
- 0:21If we have a confrontation with someone, they may point out
- 0:24these faults, but we are generally less receptive to
- 0:27hearing it when it comes from a perceived opponent or enemy.
- 0:32People who are close to us, who are our friends and relatives,
- 0:37are frequently reticent to discuss these things with us,
- 0:41particularly if we have a habit of negative reaction or argument
- 0:45which they have seen displayed in the past.
- 0:49Thus, we remain usually cut off from learning the lesson and
- 0:54moving beyond these shortcomings under most circumstances.
- 0:58Thus, it is an enormous benefit to a seeker to have a person
- 1:03whom we respect and honor for their wisdom take up the
- 1:06opportunity to expose our faults for us.
- 1:10This is a means of real progress and opens the door to new
- 1:14insights and inner spiritual growth.
- 1:20A verse from the Dhammapada. We should seek the company of
- 1:24the sage who shows our faults as if he were showing us a hidden
- 1:29treasure. The Mother notes quote in all
- 1:34scriptures meant to help mankind to progress.
- 1:38It is always said that you must be very grateful to those who
- 1:43show you your faults, and so you must seek their company.
- 1:47But the form used here is particularly felicitous.
- 1:51If a fault is shown to you, it is as if a treasure were shown
- 1:57to you. That is to say, each time that
- 2:01you discover in yourself a fault, incapacity, lack of
- 2:06understanding, weakness, insincerity, all that prevents
- 2:12you from making a progress, it is as if you discovered a
- 2:17wonderful treasure. Instead of growing sad and
- 2:21telling yourself, oh, there is still another defect.
- 2:26You should On the contrary, rejoice as if you had made a
- 2:30wonderful acquisition because you have just caught hold of one
- 2:34of those things that prevented you from progressing.
- 2:38And once you have caught hold of it, pull it out.
- 2:42For those who practice a yogic discipline, consider that the
- 2:46moment you know that a thing should not be, you have the
- 2:50power to remove it, discard it, destroy it.
- 2:53To discover a fault is an acquisition.
- 2:58It is as though a flood of light had come to replace the little
- 3:02speck of obscurity which has just been driven out.
