- 0:0811, 1985, the New York Mets faced the Philadelphia
- 0:11Phillies for a Tuesday night onslaught at Veterans
- 0:13Stadium in Philadelphia. The Mets were managed
- 0:16by Davey Johnson and the Phillies were managed
- 0:18by John Felski. You'll have fun with this audio
- 0:21recording from the radio broadcast featuring
- 0:22announcers Andy Musser and Chris Wheeler. We
- 0:26are going to go with Charles Hudson tonight.
- 0:28He will be opposed by Tom Gorman, and there's
- 0:31the uncomfortable Mike Schmidt at first. Wheels,
- 0:33right Andy, there he is, Mike Schmidt, the first
- 0:35baseman. Second baseman is Juan Samuel. There's
- 0:40Louie Aguayo over there, talking to Steve, to
- 0:43Rick Shue, who is the third baseman. Louie, of
- 0:46course, will play short. Von Hayes is the left
- 0:50fielder, leading off tonight. Gary Maddox in
- 0:54center. Been a hot hitter the last couple nights.
- 0:57Glenn Wilson will play in right field. Mo Diaz
- 1:02is behind the plate. Ozzie Virgil out with a
- 1:04contusion of the ankle. And the pitcher, right
- 1:08-hander Charles Hudson. There's the numbers on
- 1:10him. One and six. The record does not indicate
- 1:13how well he has pitched this year. Now let's
- 1:25look at the lineup the Mets will use tonight.
- 1:26It's a different lineup from last night. In this
- 1:28case, they are giving the night off to Mookie
- 1:31Wilson, ostensibly their regular center fielder,
- 1:33but Mookie hasn't been hitting. So they go with
- 1:36Backman at second, Johnson at third, Hernandez
- 1:38at first, Carter behind the head plate. Heap
- 1:41is playing center field tonight. Heap has not
- 1:43been in center field since October of 83. Foster
- 1:46in left, he had the night off last night. Turtle
- 1:48in right, Santana at short, and the left -hander,
- 1:51Tom Gorman, making only his second start of the
- 1:53year. Now talking about Charles Hudson, in his
- 1:58last four starts, he has been the losing pitcher,
- 2:03but he hasn't pitched badly at all. The last
- 2:05time he worked in a game as a relief pitcher,
- 2:08oddly enough, was against these Mets. That was
- 2:10May 10th in New York. He worked only one inning,
- 2:13gave up one hit. And right after that, he became
- 2:16a starter. Here's Wally Backman to lead it off
- 2:18for New York. Backman batting at .227. The Mets'
- 2:21team batting average is .223. We want to lay
- 2:24their problems on something, Andy. There it is.
- 2:26It's finally caught up to them, their lack of
- 2:28hitting. They were winning early in the season
- 2:29despite a lack of hitting. And now it's starting
- 2:32to catch up a little bit. You remember when they
- 2:34made the Carter trade, though, everybody said,
- 2:35what an offensive lineup. Where do the scorer
- 2:37runs and punches? Wasn't that the offseason prediction?
- 2:40Oh, yeah. Well, that's the hot stove league stuff
- 2:42is great. And then when you go to put it into
- 2:44play. Doesn't always work out that way. And people
- 2:48were worried about their pitching depth, and
- 2:50they have had pitching injuries, and yet that's
- 2:52worked out pretty well for them. He's a good
- 2:58pitcher. Calvin Chiraldi has come up in the minors.
- 3:02Very impressive. with in spring training, and
- 3:04he's picked up some of the slack for any since
- 3:07he went on the disabled list. Of course, McDowell
- 3:09has been outstanding for them, but he's injured
- 3:11right now. Bad ankle, got hurt in a play at first
- 3:14base. There's a grounder back in the middle,
- 3:15and it's going to be a base hit. Wally Backman,
- 3:17who has been pesky against the Phillies this
- 3:20year, batting at over 400 against the Phillies,
- 3:23gets the inning started with a base hit. Backman
- 3:27will run a little bit, too. Mets don't have a
- 3:29whole lot of guys that run in their lineup, but
- 3:31Backman stole in seven days. He's been caught
- 3:34stealing two times. And here's Howard Johnson
- 3:37from Clearwater, Florida. You can see the numbers
- 3:39on Howard. Not good. They acquired him in the
- 3:42offseason from Detroit for Walt Terrell. They
- 3:44were expecting pretty good offensive production
- 3:46from him because he is not a great defensive
- 3:48player at third base. And so far, he has supplied
- 3:51only one home run. He's a switch hitter, and
- 3:55he has more power from the left side. You can't
- 3:58tell with that situation with just the one home
- 4:00run, but he's not real strong from the right
- 4:03side, very powerful from the left side. Right
- 4:06now his batting average is just about the same
- 4:08from both sides, not good. Mo Diaz back behind
- 4:19the plate tonight. Last night, Ozzie Virgil suffered
- 4:22a contusion of the left ankle. He broke a blood
- 4:25vessel in there, and the ankle was swollen very
- 4:28quick. And so Ozzie gets the night off, and Bo
- 4:32was going to catch tomorrow night anyway, so
- 4:33Ozzie's got a couple of days off here. And he
- 4:43jams Johnson, who fouls the back. No balls and
- 4:45two strikes on Johnson. Hudson is one and two
- 4:49lifetime against the Mets. Lost to them once
- 4:51in relief this year. That was April 19th. He
- 4:53lost to Dwight Good and won nothing. Pitching
- 4:56in relief, he worked only an inning and a third
- 4:58and gave up only one run, but it was enough to
- 5:00cost him the game. Backman has not given any
- 5:05indication of running thus far, although his
- 5:07wheel says he does have some numbers that indicate
- 5:09he does. And it's a ball and two strikes on Johnson.
- 5:12Keith Hernandez waiting on deck. Howard Johnson
- 5:17played last year for the world champion Detroit
- 5:20Tigers. He was Detroit's number one choice in
- 5:24the secondary phase of the January 79 draft.
- 5:29Nickname, of course, is Mojo. And what else would
- 5:32he become? Backman still not going, and the ball
- 5:42hit in the air to right center field. Over to
- 5:46McPherson. play is Maddox. Johnson is out. Backman
- 5:50retreats to first base. There's one down. Now
- 5:55we'll look at the slickest fielding first baseman
- 5:58in the National League, Keith Hernandez, who
- 5:59is a pretty good offensive player, too, although
- 6:01generally he hits up around 300. His average
- 6:04is down, too, but he's been getting key hits.
- 6:06He's the Mets' RBI leader with 26, and seven
- 6:09of them have been game -winning RBIs. That is
- 6:11the second top figure in the league. Doubles
- 6:15your way off. You look at Keith Hernandez, he
- 6:17looked for doubles, and he only had 10 of them.
- 6:20Normally, he's going to be right up there among
- 6:22the league leaders in doubles by the end of the
- 6:25season. Keith will not swing at bad pitches among
- 6:30the league leaders in walks, as always. And you've
- 6:36got to get the ball over to Hernandez. Hudson
- 6:38misses. Ball one. This guy rarely chases a bad
- 6:41ball. Keith Hernandez, I think, hits ahead in
- 6:44the count as much as any hitter in baseball.
- 6:47The winner of seven consecutive gold gloves.
- 6:50That's Backman at first. There's one out. Charles
- 6:56steps off. Like he might be going there. He was
- 6:59leaning a little bit. Towards second. They could
- 7:02go play a little bit of hit and run with Hernandez
- 7:04ahead in the count 1 -0. Hernandez with one of
- 7:10the top on -base figures in the National League.
- 7:12Not going. And that pitch was close, but he missed
- 7:15with it. Our home plate umpire tonight, one of
- 7:17the vets in the National League, Bruce Freming.
- 7:20We've got John Kibler at first, Dixtello at second,
- 7:22and Greg Bonan at third. 2 -0 on Hernandez. 31
- 7:30years of age from San Francisco. And there goes
- 7:36Backman for the first time. It's a strike. Beautiful
- 7:38throw. He is out. Sammy puts the tag on Backman.
- 7:45On his wheels. Can we see it right here? See
- 7:48that? He didn't get a good jump, and Bowe really
- 7:50guns him. Great throw by Bowe Diaz to Samwell,
- 7:54and they had him by plenty. You know, Bowe was
- 7:57throwing the ball in springtime. catcher you'll
- 8:00see. And then he wound up getting hurt right
- 8:02out of the start of the season. The 2 -1 pitch
- 8:05to Hernandez fouled off the plate, 2 -2 to Keith.
- 8:11Macy's empty two outs as the Mets bat in the
- 8:13first inning. Their team batting average is lower
- 8:15than the Phillies. I think the Phillies have
- 8:17been in a hitting slump, and they have. The Phillies
- 8:19are out hitting the Mets by seven full points,
- 8:22230 -223. that's missed Strawberry. I don't think
- 8:31there's any doubt about that. Danny Heap has
- 8:34picked up some slack for them, but Strawberry
- 8:36is one of those intimidating hitters. You know,
- 8:38when they talked about that offense, they thought
- 8:39of this guy, and then Carter, and then Strawberry.
- 8:42Three, four, five. and they don't have that,
- 8:44and they're going to be without Strawberry for
- 8:46a couple months, and I think that's a significant
- 8:48loss for New York. You're right. Strawberry,
- 8:51a dangerous hitter. He wasn't hitting that much.
- 8:53He was only batting .215, but his power scares
- 8:55you. There's a ground ball foul. Well, right,
- 8:57and they also had Foster, of course, so they
- 8:59were going to go at you left, right, left, right,
- 9:01with four guys that could hit the ball out of
- 9:03the ballpark, and it hasn't worked out. As many
- 9:06things don't work out the way you think they're
- 9:08going to work out in the offseason. Heck, they're
- 9:12only two and a half out. And they've got a lot
- 9:14of games coming with the Cubs. That's right.
- 9:16They have not played them yet. Just like the
- 9:17Phillies haven't played the Pirates and Cardinals.
- 9:19They have not played. Look at that ball. Bounced
- 9:22to the right of third baseman Shue. That's an
- 9:25unusual one. Here's Hayes throw to second. They're
- 9:27going to get him. Hernandez took a gamble in
- 9:32going to second base. Give him a base hit, but
- 9:34he's out of second base. You're listening to
- 9:39Philly's Replay on The Game, the new 1210 AM.

- 11:50Replay, a rebroadcast of a great game in Phillies
- 11:53history. Now let's return to the Phillies and
- 11:55the New York Mets, June 11, 1985. Okay, there
- 12:00is Keith Hernandez, who looks like he's still
- 12:03burning down there at first base. Wally Backman
- 12:06is a second baseman. His shortstop is Rafael
- 12:09Santana. And the third baseman, Howard Johnson.
- 12:14George Foster is in left field. Danny Heap in
- 12:17center. Clint Hurdle will play right field. And
- 12:22the great veteran, Gary Carter, behind the plate.
- 12:25And the pitcher, the left -hander, Tom Gorman.
- 12:29We mentioned that Gorman is making only his second
- 12:31start of the year, but it's only his seventh
- 12:33major league start, believe it or not. And the
- 12:38Phillies to face him with Von Hayes leading off.
- 12:40It'll be Hayes, Shue, Somwell, Schmidt, Wilson,
- 12:43Diaz, Maddox, Aguayo, and Hudson. First pitch
- 12:47is over for a strike. Hayes batting in the leadoff
- 12:50spot for the first time ever in a Phillies uniform.
- 12:53I asked Ron about it, and he said, well, I did
- 12:54bat leadoff for Cleveland a long time ago. There's
- 12:58a ball hit in the air well to right field. It
- 13:01is out of here. Ron Hayes, who was one for 22,
- 13:06has just let off with a home run. And for the
- 13:12third game in a row, the Phillies have scored
- 13:14in the first inning. Started from your leadoff,
- 13:23man. Here's a pitch. It's a fastball down and
- 13:25in. Classic home run zone. Boy, you throw a ball
- 13:29to a left -handed hitter down and in like that,
- 13:31it'll go a long, long way. Come on, hit that
- 13:34out of here. No doubt about it. Number four for
- 13:37Von Hayes. Third home run given up by Gorman.
- 13:40And the Phillies a quick 1 -0 lead. Here is Rick
- 13:43Shue who takes high ball. Von Shue batting a
- 13:45.270. He has a five -game hitting streak going
- 13:47right now. And is batting .375 during the streak.
- 13:53And he powers one deep to left field. Foster
- 13:59has just enough room on the track, and Shue is
- 14:02retired. Tom Gorman, Andy, must wonder what's
- 14:06going on. His last game out was Saturday, and
- 14:09with two out in the ninth inning, Tommy Herr
- 14:10hit a home run off him. To beat the Mets in a
- 14:14game one to nothing, he gets an out in that game
- 14:17for the third out of the inning, and he comes
- 14:19out here today home run and warning track. Ron
- 14:23Samwell batting at .242. Sammy can hit it out,
- 14:27too. He has four home runs this year. He tries
- 14:30a bunt, goes over top of the Phillies' dugout.
- 14:32Strike one. Well, the hits have started to come
- 14:38lately for the Phillies. They've been bunching
- 14:40a few more of them, and probably more important
- 14:42than that, they've been getting some key hits.
- 14:44In other words, we're talking about hits with
- 14:46runners in scoring position. We're talking about
- 14:48hits with two out. And on that last road trip,
- 14:51for instance, they didn't do any of that. Another
- 14:55one, nothing and two. Nothing like a leadoff
- 15:00home run in a game to get you going. Gorman wants
- 15:03a different baseball. Gorman with a forkball.
- 15:09We're told that it's a really good forkball.
- 15:12His breaking ball is just average. It's important
- 15:14for Gorman to get ahead in the count. If he pitches
- 15:16behind in the count, he can't go to that forkball
- 15:19as much. There it is. One, two. Phillies start
- 15:26the second third of the season tonight. They
- 15:28finished 20 and 34 in the first third. They're
- 15:32in fifth place, 14 games out. Here's a ball nailed
- 15:36to left field. Foster over to get it. Oh, it
- 15:38almost bounced over his head. And Foster makes
- 15:42a bad return throw, but he did a nice job of
- 15:44stopping that ball. Base hit for Sammy. This
- 15:47turf is turning into a trampoline out here. And
- 15:49when you haven't played here much, that can happen.
- 15:52And, you know, you can take your fly balls. Nothing
- 15:56like a ball coming off the bat that way. Cluster
- 15:58did make a tremendous leap to keep that ball
- 16:01from going over his head. You know, Sammy would
- 16:03have been on third. Here's Mike Schmidt. Wheels,
- 16:05you say turning into a trampoline. You think
- 16:06there is a change in the turf here recently?
- 16:08I think it's really gotten hard fast, and I think
- 16:10it has to do with the USFL being here for a couple
- 16:13years. That's one of the reasons, because it
- 16:15was used and there were a lot of conversions
- 16:16made on it. And the equipment used in making
- 16:18the conversions, putting the lines on and off
- 16:20and whatnot. Absolutely. It's getting harder
- 16:22fast than they thought it would. It's still good.
- 16:28I mean, it's not bad. It's not faded real bad
- 16:30that you can't see the ball, and it's not getting
- 16:32to the point where it's real bad yet, but you
- 16:34see the way people are slipping on it, too, and
- 16:36that's one of the first signs. And we saw a ball
- 16:38hop right over Sammy's head here the other day.
- 16:43You see, you've always seen crazy hops on AstroTurf,
- 16:46but when you see crazy hops when a fielder is
- 16:48in position to play the ball. Well, right, exactly.
- 16:50You see them in the cutout areas, but not on
- 16:52the turf itself, per se, and that's what you're
- 16:54seeing. You don't have to tear it up yet, but
- 16:57it's starting to show signs that, you know, they're
- 16:59going to have to start thinking about it maybe
- 17:01a little sooner. What is this, the third year
- 17:03for him? Yeah. There goes Sammy, pitches a ball.
- 17:06It was a good throw, but he outran it. Not a
- 17:09bad throw by Carter, but Samwell with his 16th
- 17:12stolen base. Sammy got a good jump. See, as opposed
- 17:17to what happened to Backman, he did not spin,
- 17:19and he really got a good jump. Carter with a
- 17:21great throw. You can see Backman come up in front
- 17:26of the bag and then go back with the tag, and
- 17:27he beat it. And so Sammy at second. There's one
- 17:32out in the inning. Phillies with a 1 -0 lead.
- 17:37Gary Carter wants to talk it over here with Gorman.
- 17:47Confused on their signs with that runner now
- 17:48at second base. When you talk about the turf,
- 17:50I'm not sure that this is in the fourth year.
- 17:52I'll have to check on that. and yet I think it
- 17:57might be the fourth. But anyway, it is getting
- 18:01a little bit bouncy. And like everything else,
- 18:05they have developed newer and later models. In
- 18:09fact, that area out there in right field has
- 18:10a hunk of it in where the water drains right
- 18:12through it. Schmidte was lighted on 3 -0, but
- 18:17he fouled it back. That's not a bad move against
- 18:19a forkballer because he's not going to get one
- 18:21in that situation. Three balls and a strike on
- 18:24Schmidte. with six homers, 22 RBIs. Glenn Wilson
- 18:33has been saying lately that he's going to come
- 18:35out and be aggressive and swing the bat and see
- 18:38what happens. I think that's an attitude that
- 18:40will carry over team -wise. Could be, but there's
- 18:43certain guys that's just not their personality,
- 18:45like Michael. Michael will battle a pitcher and
- 18:50walk a lot. He's never going to come out and
- 18:52just let it fly and see what happens. There is
- 18:56Willie. Hero of the last two Phillies games,
- 18:59six RBIs in the last two days, and had the game
- 19:02-winning RBIs both Sunday and yesterday. And
- 19:06Wilson has been tough for the Mets. He's batting
- 19:08.368 against New York. Finds runners at first
- 19:11and second, one out. Starts him with a fork ball,
- 19:22but misses. Tom Weld really had to jump off.
- 19:25second base that time and he's thinking about
- 19:27feeling third. Gorman did look back and the shortstop
- 19:30Santana jumped in because he had a walking lead.
- 19:33He looked like he was going to go. There he goes.
- 19:38Swing and a miss. Play at third base. Not in
- 19:41time. He was on his own. Schmidt stayed at first.
- 19:45Number 17 for Sammy. Well, you could see it on
- 19:50the play before as I was describing. time he
- 19:53got the walking lead off second the fourth ball
- 19:55which is a slow pitch and a great jump and steals
- 19:58the base Carter and he probably would have thrown
- 20:01through if Schmidt went that time so Mike was
- 20:03uh was smart to stay where he was first and third
- 20:07one out Mets have the infield creeping in just
- 20:11a little bit and the pitch low and inside a ball
- 20:13hanging back and then creeping with the pitch
- 20:19what advantage is that I don't know I really
- 20:23have been watching that on some teams do that.
- 20:26I guess they feel they have more momentum coming
- 20:27in. I have to think it's tough to move laterally.
- 20:38Wilson has already topped last year's RBI total.
- 20:48His career high, by the way, in a Tiger uniform
- 20:51is 65. gotten that short ball. You saw it dive
- 21:15at the last second, and he really went down and
- 21:17hit it hard. And since Sunday and Glenn popped
- 21:20that ball out of the ballpark on Sunday, he is
- 21:22really a confident hitter at home plate. Now
- 21:26Bo Diaz digs in. Bo has not had many plate appearances
- 21:31this year, and he's batting at a skinny 0 -95.
- 21:35Lifetime against the Mets, though. He is a 3
- 21:37-14 hitter. had 21 at -bats. Mike Schmidt, the
- 21:48runner at second base. And Glenn Wilson at first.
- 21:51Still only one out. Oh, socks it into left center
- 21:58field. Foster's not going to get there. Mike
- 22:00Schmidt scores. The ball bounces into the backdrop,
- 22:04so that's going to be a ground rule double for
- 22:06Diaz. And Wilson, who was on first base, will
- 22:09have to go back. So that cost the Phillies because
- 22:12he could have scored. 3 -3 to nothing. I hope
- 22:19this doesn't cost the Phillies a run later. We'll
- 22:21see what happens. But Bowe hits his ball hard
- 22:23into the alley in left center. Foster with no
- 22:25prayer. And you see it just bounce over that
- 22:27yellow line. And it will hit the backdrop and
- 22:29come back. And a good call by second base umpire
- 22:32Dick Stella who ran out there and saw it as a
- 22:34ground rule double. And the Mets are going to
- 22:38get immediate bullpen action. And getting up
- 22:41for them is number 40, Calvin Chiraldi. Tom Gorman,
- 22:49we may recall, was a kind of an emergency starter
- 22:52here tonight. When we got the probable pitchers
- 22:55for the Mets here on Sunday, they named three
- 22:57out of the four and did not name anybody for
- 23:00tonight. And then at the last minute, they decided
- 23:03to go ahead and pitch Gorman. And it has not
- 23:06turned out well for them. Mets pitching coach
- 23:13has visited the mound. He's headed back to the
- 23:15dugout. And Gary Maddox comes to the plate. Gary
- 23:18had an RBI single last night. And the Phillies,
- 23:22with three in the first, lead it 3 -0. And runners
- 23:25at second and third, one out. So Maddox in a
- 23:27heck of a spot here to be able to drive in another
- 23:29run. Mets are keeping the infield back. Maddox
- 23:36takes low a ball. Kind of hard to believe, isn't
- 23:38it? Three runs in already in the first inning.
- 23:41They're only up at third with Howard Johnson.
- 23:44And that's primarily because of the runner, wouldn't
- 23:46you think? Yeah, I just find it hard to believe
- 23:49that they wouldn't try to cut off a run here
- 23:51on a ground ball. There's Davey Johnson. Because
- 23:55they haven't been scoring many runs. Now they're
- 23:58going to walk it. That's why. They were just
- 24:00pitching around him. They weren't going to let
- 24:01him hit in this situation with that infield back.
- 24:04They just wanted to, they hoped that they could
- 24:06get Gary to chase a bad ball, pop him up, strike
- 24:10him out. So they will face Aguayo here with the
- 24:13bases loaded. Gary gets the intentional walk,
- 24:18second walk of the inning given up by Gorman.
- 24:20There have been four hits and two walks in the
- 24:22inning. Pitching change. And Davey Johnson coming
- 24:25to the mound. So Tom Gorman does not survive
- 24:27the first inning. He gets only one out. And the
- 24:31Mets go to their bullpen and bring in Calvin
- 24:33Chiraldi. How about that? Chiraldi is also a
- 24:38right -hander. He's from Houston, Texas. 22 years
- 24:41of age. And Chiraldi this year, 2 -1 with a 6
- 24:50.23 earned run average. Calvin Sherwaldy in for
- 24:54New York. This is a young man who pitched for
- 24:57the University of Texas last year and helped
- 25:01pitch them to the national championship. And
- 25:04I believe Texas is going for that again tonight
- 25:06against Miami. They were rained out last night.
- 25:09He's a good -looking young pitcher who we mentioned
- 25:11earlier. We saw him in spring training and didn't
- 25:13make the ball club. But he has real good stuff.
- 25:23WGMV, Philadelphia. ...early, and they are having
- 25:26bullpen problems because we were mentioned that
- 25:28Roger McDowell can't pitch. He has a sore right
- 25:30ankle. ...in a collision covering first base
- 25:34on Friday night, so he's out of there. And the
- 25:37Phillies kind of strafed Doug Sisk here last
- 25:40night. They went to the College World Series
- 25:42in 83 with Shirley. Last year it was Cal State
- 25:45Fullerton that won it. And Texas with a shot
- 25:48tonight. Tom Gorman leaves after pitching a third
- 25:56of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits,
- 25:58two walks, didn't strike out anybody, gave up
- 26:00the leadoff homer to Hayes. And he will be responsible
- 26:04for three men on base right now as Aguayo comes
- 26:07to the plate. And what a difference it means
- 26:09to get out in front early. And the Phillies have
- 26:11done that now three games in a row, and they've
- 26:13won the previous two. He was selected in a special
- 26:24round in the June 1983 draft, 27th overall, and
- 26:28as we mentioned, out of the University of Texas.
- 26:32Against the Phillies this year. We mentioned
- 26:38big in the College World Series, he was 4 -0
- 26:41in the end. And that special round, Andy, we
- 26:45talked about happened because the Mets had lost.
- 26:48free agent pitcher Pete Falcone to Atlanta, and
- 26:50that's how they got this pick, the pick Calvin
- 26:52Chiraldi. Luis Aguayo. Luis had a couple big
- 26:57hits for the Phillies last night. Checks and
- 26:59takes the pitch low. First base umpire John Kibler
- 27:04sees it differently. He says it's a strike. The
- 27:10bases are loaded with one out. Mets infield looking
- 27:13for a pair. That's in the dirt. One ball, one
- 27:20strike. If Aguayo does not hit into a double
- 27:22play, then the Phillies have batted around. He's
- 27:24the eighth hitter to come to the plate this inning,
- 27:26and there's only one out. Had a big spot in this
- 27:28ballgame for them. Stay out of a real big inning.
- 27:36Low. Two and one. Good eye. Subject of Larry
- 27:43Rosen's pregame show. articulate young man and
- 27:48a guy who is very underrated on a ball club.
- 27:56Got jammed and pops a foul. Back level on the
- 27:59count. Two balls and two strikes. Pitcher Charles
- 28:01Hudson waiting on deck. Had his pitch to hit
- 28:03that time. Louie likes the ball from the middle
- 28:05of the plate in, especially fastballs. And he
- 28:08had a pitch to hit that time and fouled it off.
- 28:19By the way, Steve Jelts out of the lineup because
- 28:21Aguayo is playing. He's not just sitting these
- 28:23days. He's learning a new hitting technique and
- 28:25trying to perfect it during the ball. He's hit.
- 28:27There's another run. It's 4 -0 Phillies as Aguayo
- 28:31is hit. And the bases remain loaded. You can
- 28:36hear some people booing out there. Well, he's
- 28:37obviously not trying to hit. Louie Aguayo with
- 28:40the bases loaded and the pitcher on deck. All
- 28:43he's trying to do is run a fastball in here and
- 28:45jam him with it, and the ball gets completely
- 28:47away from Girardi and hit him on a spot where
- 28:49it won't hurt very long. To give Louie an RBI,
- 28:52that'll be his eighth of the year. Bases remain
- 28:54loaded for Hudson, and it's 4 -0 Phillies. Giving
- 29:05Louie a little extra time to walk it off. But
- 29:10maybe it will hurt a little longer. May have
- 29:12hit him on the hip and not the rear end. Here's
- 29:16Hudson, one for nine this year. Has not knocked
- 29:19in a run. How about this for a spot, though?
- 29:22Bases loaded, one out. And the Phillies have
- 29:24battled around. Charles had a rip. A year ago,
- 29:43Hudson was a switch hitter, but has given up
- 29:45hitting from the left side. Down the right field
- 29:48line. Could be trouble. Foul ball. Oh, boy. Nice
- 29:54idea. Nothing and two on Hudson, who nearly looped
- 30:02in an extra base blow. Charlie, like a lot of
- 30:05pitchers, is a notorious late swinger. And boy,
- 30:09when he was batting left -handed, he used to
- 30:10scare a lot of people the way he'd foul balls
- 30:12off. It's a little bit better this way. And that
- 30:21was a little too late. So Hudson strikes out.
- 30:25That's the first Philly batter to fan tonight.
- 30:27Chiraldi gets the strikeout. Two outs in the
- 30:29inning. And Von Hayes, who led off the inning
- 30:31with a home run, now comes up with the bases
- 30:34loaded. Phillies have a 4 -0 lead. Shiroly stays
- 31:06away. One ball, one strike. The home run for
- 31:09Hayes was his fourth of the year. And his 24th
- 31:13run batted in. And Hayes has always been a good
- 31:15hitter against the Mets, too. 368 against New
- 31:18York so far this year. Vaughn was trying to send
- 31:26another one into the right field backdrop. When
- 31:38you come into a ball game in the first inning,
- 31:40as Chiraldi did, the term long relief is certainly
- 31:43appropriate. Breaking ball, and Hayes lays off
- 31:49at 2 -2. Bo Diaz runs a third. Gary Maddox at
- 31:58second. And Aguayo at first. Two outs. Just got
- 32:15a piece of it. That pitch was out of the strike
- 32:17zone, but Hayes fouled it back. Two balls, two
- 32:21strikes. they used to boot. And Bond comes out
- 33:33to Lantham, comes out of the dugout, waves the
- 33:35cap. Two home runs in the same inning for Hayes.
- 33:40Five RBIs in one inning. You know, I've been
- 33:42looking through the press guide trying to find
- 33:44out the last Philly to hit two home runs in an
- 33:46inning. Just in case. And I can't find it. But
- 33:50I'm sure Larry Shank will come up with that shortly.
- 33:53But you were trying. Yeah, I'm looking at all
- 33:56over the place in here. Shue, the batter. And
- 34:01the count to Shue, 2 -0. I mean, they've got
- 34:03Vincent and Larry have almost everything you
- 34:06can ask for about home runs in here, and I can't
- 34:08find that. Six of the runs charged to Gorman,
- 34:11two of the runs charged to Chiraldi, and it's
- 34:138 -0 Phillies. See Larry looking for some more
- 34:23books out there. there in the press box he's
- 34:25searching up to his belly button and books over
- 34:28there look here comes Boys have hit for the cycle
- 34:59in the inning now. A triple by Shue as Foster
- 35:04got a crazy bounce off the lower box fence in
- 35:07left field. And Foster does not have a great
- 35:10arm at that. Watch how far away from Foster the
- 35:13ball bounces. Shue's got the play right in front
- 35:16of him so he can see it all the way. And when
- 35:18the ball rolls away, he gets in easily. A triple
- 35:21for Shue. That's his first major league grand
- 35:25slam. First time he's... Hit two home runs in
- 35:30a game up in that part of the lineup, that's
- 35:32for sure, because he never let... Look at this.
- 35:34Here's the ball getting away from Carter. Here
- 35:35comes Shue. He scores! 9 -0, Phillies. Chiaroli,
- 35:42who had hit a batter, now is charged with a wild
- 35:45pitch. And Spottlemeyer, the Mets pitching coach,
- 35:48pops out of the dugout. Wow, what an inning for
- 35:52the Phillies. There's the wild pitch, a breaking
- 35:55ball, and Carter does everything he can do, and
- 35:57the ball bounces away and... Aggressive Rick
- 35:59Shue scores. Here it is, Andy. The last time
- 36:03a Philly hit two home runs in an inning. Andy
- 36:05Semenik in 1949 at Scheib Park versus a Cincinnati
- 36:10Red. So it had been a long, long time. How about
- 36:13that? I mean, that is a rare feat. to settle
- 36:23down Chiraldi, who naturally is shaken by the
- 36:26events here. Look what's happened just since
- 36:28Chiraldi came in. The grand slam by Hayes. He
- 36:31hit a batter. That's not going to run. And now
- 36:34he's issued a wild pitch to allow another one
- 36:36to score. Charlie Hudson, the way it's gone for
- 36:41him all year, and most Phillies pitchers just
- 36:43scrounging for runs, and all of a sudden he has
- 36:45a 9 -0 lead in the first inning. Here's the 12th
- 36:51batter of the inning, Juan Samuel. Sammy already
- 36:55has a single, two stolen bases, and a run scored
- 36:58this inning. Hard ground ball, Johnson bobbles.
- 37:13Just got it. Even with Sammy's speed, he could
- 37:17not beat that one out. But what a round. Nine
- 37:21runs, six hits, no errors, and nobody left on
- 37:25base. At the end of one, just a 9 -0 lead. Don't

- 39:51.m. You're listening to Philly's Replay, a rebroadcast
- 40:00of a great game in Philly's history. Now let's
- 40:03return to the Phil's and the New York Mets, June
- 40:0511th, 1985. The last National League player to
- 40:09hit two home runs in one inning before Vaughn
- 40:11just did it is here tonight, sitting in the Mets'
- 40:14dugout. Ray Knight did it in 1980. Only 13 National
- 40:18League players have ever homered twice in the
- 40:20same inning, so Vaughn is right up there in rare
- 40:22air. Well, that is rare air. You know, two home
- 40:25runs in one inning. And what was that? You know,
- 40:28you gave the stats on what he was coming into
- 40:30the game. He was really struggling. Well, that's
- 40:32right. He was one for 22 when he stepped to the
- 40:34plate the first time. Hit a solo home run and
- 40:37then comes back with a slam. Isn't that something?
- 40:39Here's Gary Carter to lead off the New York second
- 40:41inning. Talking with Gary before the game, he
- 40:46says he is healthy now, although, you know, he
- 40:47had some injured ribs early in the year, and
- 40:50he says, every once in a while when I bend a
- 40:52certain way, I can still feel it. There's a high
- 40:57pop -up foul, wide of third, Shue coming over,
- 41:00and the ball will be in the seats. How about
- 41:05Rick Shue? You know, all of the things that happened
- 41:08in that inning. We'll pale by comparison with
- 41:11what the Hayes did, but there are so many interesting
- 41:13things that happened in the Phillies first. I
- 41:15mean, two stolen bases by Sammy. Another RBI
- 41:19single by Wilson. An RBI double for Diaz. Foul
- 41:26by Carter. And the triple by Shue. base coach
- 41:34of the Mets, Bill Robinson. And another ex -Phil
- 41:37is coaching over at third base. That would be
- 41:40Buddy Harrelson. The last leadoff home run for
- 41:47the Phillies, by the way, was last year. Jeff
- 41:51Stone did it against the Cardinals. Here's a
- 41:53pop -up behind the plate. Oh, coming back. Is
- 41:56there room? Not quite. That was off Joaquin Anduar.
- 42:05A ball and two strikes on Carter. That was a
- 42:19tough play for Shue. That was right off the cutout,
- 42:22and he makes it. Boy, he's a tiger down there.
- 42:24Isn't he? He really is. I'm fearless. I mean,
- 42:28he went after that ball, came skidding through
- 42:30that cutout area, and stayed down. Look at him
- 42:33stay down. Then the ball jumps at the last second.
- 42:36His hands come up. The thing about Rick Shue
- 42:39is he makes strong, accurate throws, too. Schmitty
- 42:43has got a lot of those kind of throws. Now Danny
- 42:47Heap. He's in center field tonight. Last night,
- 42:50Danny Heap played in right field. This is the
- 42:55first time he has been in center field since
- 42:57October 2nd of 83. And he's done a nice job filling
- 43:03in for Darryl Strawberry, basically. He's hitting
- 43:06a .289. The Phillies, Andy, the way they've been
- 43:11going, nine runs can be a whole series or two
- 43:14series, and they get nine runs in one inning.
- 43:16Isn't that amazing? You know, the San Francisco
- 43:20Giants have scored only two runs in their last
- 43:22five games. Well, that has to be the low point
- 43:27of the season for the Phillies to be swept by
- 43:28the Giants. That was as close to bottoming out
- 43:32as you can come. Especially the one hitter. Yeah.
- 43:39A mile high, shallow left field. Hayes coming
- 43:42on. And Vaughn does that part of the game, too.
- 43:47He flies to left, two up and two down on the
- 43:49second. And here's George Foster. Foster is the
- 43:53Mets' home run leader with eight. He's among
- 43:56the league leaders, and Foster was out of the
- 43:58lineup last night. He had played both ends of
- 43:59the doubleheader against the Cardinals at Shea
- 44:01on Sunday. Foster not hitting much for average.
- 44:11Just 215. They're really going to the record
- 44:25books now. The record for most RBIs in an inning
- 44:28is six. It was only one off that time. When you
- 44:35think about it, what else could a leadoff man
- 44:36do except get five RBIs and two at bats? He hit
- 44:41two home runs. That's right. That's your most
- 44:43production, isn't it? Sure. A number two hitter
- 44:46could get more, but not a leadoff man. Hudson
- 44:56with a no -ball two -strike count on George Foster.
- 45:01Hudson was a relief pitcher the last time the
- 45:03Mets saw the Phillies. Awfully close. One and
- 45:13two. Foster hanging in that box pretty good.
- 45:20He's one of those... Oh, there he goes. Hudson
- 45:32wins the battle, gets him 1 -2 -3 in the second.
- 45:35That's his first strikeout. So we're in the middle
- 45:37of the second inning here at Veterans Stadium,
- 45:39Philadelphia, with the Phillies leading 9 -0.
- 45:42You're listening to Phillies Replay on The Game,

- 46:37guaranteed for 10... Well, we're here at the
- 46:43Fat Andy Musser with Chris Wheeler, and we're
- 46:45seeing something interesting here tonight because...
- 46:48We're still leafing, there's Vaughn, still leafing
- 46:50through the book here to find out all the different
- 46:52facets of just how history -making those two
- 46:57home runs in the first inning are. Okay, he looks
- 47:00like he's doing an interview right now. What
- 47:02a good kid he is. So nice to see the things that
- 47:06have happened to Vaughn after that first year.
- 47:11Great talent. He's going to have a heck of a
- 47:13career in Philadelphia. In the second inning,
- 47:21Mike Schmidt will lead it off. He was a part
- 47:23of the first inning. As you can see, he walked
- 47:25and scored a run. Hayes hit those two homers
- 47:33off two different pitchers. Gorman was the pitcher
- 47:35on the first one. And Giraldi surrendered the
- 47:39slam. Six of those runs are charged to starter
- 47:47Tom Gorman and three to Giraldi. 28 runs batted
- 47:57in. Base hit for Schmidt. Stroked it hard. Foster
- 48:09comes up with it, and the Phillies have their
- 48:10seventh hit of the ballgame. Boy, it can look
- 48:16so hard, and then it can look easy. And I guess
- 48:19there's a happy medium in there somewhere. High
- 48:23fastball inside, and Schminney just turned on
- 48:26and got himself a line drive base hit. Here's
- 48:30Glenn Wilson. He has an RBI single and a run
- 48:32scored. Willie with seven RBIs in the last two
- 48:36games. That's only slightly better than Hayes
- 48:39tonight. And Wilson has had the game -winning
- 48:44RBI each of the last two days. That may go to
- 48:47Von tonight. Here's another hard hit ball. Extra
- 48:50bases into the corner. trying to dig it out.
- 48:54Schmidt to third. Wilson to second with a double.
- 48:57And the Mets are going to have to get that bullpen
- 48:59up again as the Phillies are teeing off now on
- 49:02Calvin Chiraldi. You want to look at a guy that's
- 49:05loosened this club up. Glenn Wilson. Like a hanging
- 49:08breaking ball out over the plate and he went
- 49:09down and got it. Lines the ball into the corner
- 49:12and Schmidt will coast into third and stay there
- 49:14with nobody out. Willie will go to second. And
- 49:17ever since he hit that three -run home run on
- 49:19Sunday to give the Phillies their fast start,
- 49:21this has been a very loose club. Bo Diaz has
- 49:26a ground rule double. At the time that ball hopped
- 49:29over the fence, it looked like it might cost
- 49:31the Phillies an extra run, but that all became
- 49:33very academic. A fly ball down the right field
- 49:36line. If it's fair, it's trouble. Good, they
- 49:51got good for you. There's Bowe on at second.
- 49:53Bowe coming into the game hitting under 100 and
- 49:56gets himself two doubles. Amazing. Three consecutive
- 50:03hits to start this second inning. Still nobody
- 50:06out. Here's Gary Maddox. And the Mets do not
- 50:10have anybody up on the ball finish. Pitchers
- 50:20last night that they probably didn't want to
- 50:21use as long as they had to. That being Doug Sisk.
- 50:25It's going to strap Davey Johnson in his pinch
- 50:28hitting during this game. And look at Maddox.
- 50:29Right off the handle. an error up on the board,
- 51:13so maybe it's a hit all the way. Luis Aguayo,
- 51:19he was hit by a pitch to knock in a run. The
- 51:21Mets bring the infield in. Aguayo swings and
- 51:24misses. Phillies have 10 hits in the game and
- 51:2912 runs. Look at the drawn -in infield. I guess
- 51:34you gotta do that, although what's one more or
- 51:36less run at this point? I believe they scored
- 51:38that at triple wheels. They must have. Yep, no
- 51:40error. gets his first RBI of the night, number
- 51:50nine for the year. Phillies lead at 12 -0. Still
- 52:14nobody up in the New York bullpen. will continue
- 52:53to keep the infield in for Hudson. Charles a
- 52:56strikeout victim in the first inning. He was
- 52:59the first out that Ciroli got after coming into
- 53:02the ballgame. case of it. Had the infield been
- 53:32back, that ball would have been caught, but because
- 53:34they were playing in, Backman couldn't get back
- 53:36that quickly. The case of what you said earlier.
- 54:03of them with the bases loaded. single by hudson
- 54:38by the way only his second hit of the year was
- 54:40charles first run batted in a texas leader in
- 54:46the dirt and carter literally pushed haze out
- 54:49of the way to get to the ball hudson at first
- 54:51little 55 foot breaking ball there it's amazing
- 54:54that carter could block that ball shows you what
- 54:57kind of player he is 13 to nothing in the second
- 55:00inning that's way up in front of the plate in
- 55:43New York. I wonder how many people are hanging
- 55:44on McCarver's every word now. He's not even on
- 55:46yet. There's a ball hit in the air to shallow
- 55:49left. Foster coming hard. Can't get it. Face
- 55:52hit for Hayes. Another Texas League single. Hudson
- 55:58stops at second. Remember how hard it was? Boy,
- 56:04it's nice to be good. It's also nice to be lucky.
- 56:06The Mets now do have some bullpen action as the...
- 56:11Fanatic goes to work. A right -hander, Doug Sisk,
- 56:16is throwing in their bullpen. The Phillies strafed
- 56:19Sisk last night. Rick Shue has flied to the warning
- 56:34track. in the second. And a 13 -0 Phillies lead.
- 56:53The guy very relaxed right now with a 13 -run
- 56:57lead. Phillies haven't scored 13 runs for him.
- 57:00Five starts. More for Steve Carlton. Giraldi
- 57:10came into this game with over a six -earned run
- 57:12average, and that'll really balloon. Shue pops
- 57:22it up. This may be playable. Hernandez coming
- 57:24over. Looks like he does have room. And he does.
- 57:28Shue fouls out. And that's the second out of
- 57:33the second inning. And Juan Samuel, he's getting
- 57:38his third at bat of this ballgame. Has single,
- 57:40scored, stolen two bases. He's also grounded
- 57:43out. The Phillies have batted around again here
- 57:45in the second. consecutive innings. Sammy has
- 58:17a rip, nothing in two. run inning to start and
- 58:31a four run inning here. Six hits in each of the
- 58:33innings. away with a slider. And he hits a hard
- 59:26face hit right through the middle. Charlie Hudson
- 59:29scores easily. Hayes the third. And, you know,
- 59:33it's really hard to describe what's going on
- 59:35here in two innings for the Phillies when you've
- 59:37seen a team struggle like this club has. bat
- 1:00:16more than nine men really messes up your scoreboard.
- 1:00:21Yeah, well, at least it's the right side as far
- 1:00:23as you're concerned. That's right. This could
- 1:00:26be a match column. And he fouls it back. No balls
- 1:00:33and two strikes on Schmidt. Walks have not played
- 1:00:42much of a part in this. The Phillies did get
- 1:00:44two walks in the first inning, one in ten. But
- 1:00:46no walks this inning. They have more hits this
- 1:00:51inning than they did in the opening inning. The
- 1:00:571 -2 pitch to Schmidt. Ball three. And a four
- 1:01:05count now on Schmitty. Two out. Sammy will be
- 1:01:11off on the pitch from first base. He's the runner
- 1:01:13over at third. And look how much he misses a
- 1:01:58home run by. Right off the top of the wall, just
- 1:02:01below the yellow line. column in the Inquirer.
- 1:02:28I don't think anybody will have an inning like
- 1:02:30that. Calvin Ciroli will be in the Philadelphia
- 1:02:33Inquirer feature next week. Now, incidentally,
- 1:02:35Doug Sisk was strafed here last night. He worked
- 1:02:38two and a third innings, gave up five innings.
- 1:03:00and Sisk has fallen on some hard times this year,
- 1:03:03has been back to the minor leagues, and he throws
- 1:03:06a sinker and a slider, and his out pitch when
- 1:03:09he was pitching so well was that sinker ball,
- 1:03:11which he has been having trouble getting down.
- 1:03:14And a sinker ball pitcher like Sisk who leaves
- 1:03:16the ball up is in a lot of trouble. There's Davey
- 1:03:18Johnson, who's probably happy this is just one
- 1:03:20game, and Mel Stoudemire doesn't want to admit
- 1:03:23he's the pitching coach right now. You know,
- 1:03:34it's so early in the game, and he has pitching
- 1:03:37problems. You know, it's 16 to nothing, and he
- 1:03:40is going to have trouble pinch hitting as the
- 1:03:42game goes along because he just doesn't have
- 1:03:44that many arms in the pen right now. Now the
- 1:03:49batter is Glenn Wilson. He's already two for
- 1:03:51two tonight with a single and a double, an RBI,
- 1:03:54and two runs scored. 16 to nothing, Phillies.
- 1:04:12McCarver said yet. He hasn't been on yet. He
- 1:04:15hasn't been on yet? He said his opening line.
- 1:04:16I'm sure he'll think of something. He said his
- 1:04:18opening line will be tonight. It's not over yet.
- 1:04:22Well, it won't be for him. So he has not debuted
- 1:04:27yet, huh? No, Timmy has not been on yet. He comes
- 1:04:29on in the fourth, Andy. You'd think he'd be over
- 1:04:31here helping us out if he's just standing around.
- 1:04:34Here's a shot to right field. The Phillies replay
- 1:04:56on The Game, the new 1210 AM. Back in a moment.
- 1:05:02We're here to discover why some people buy other
- 1:05:05potato chip brands over the national favorite,
- 1:05:07Lay's Potato Chips. To examine this issue, we'd
- 1:05:10like to welcome Marv. Great to be here. So what
- 1:05:12is it you dislike about Lay's Potato Chips? I
- 1:05:14don't like the way they sound. You mean taste?
- 1:05:16Nope, it's the sound. But Lay's... Potato chips
- 1:05:19are always crisp and tasty. I only like things
- 1:05:21that sound annoying. You're really missing out
- 1:05:23on that great Lay's taste. Like fingernails on
- 1:05:25a chalkboard. A car alarm at four in the morning.
- 1:05:28The sound a baby makes. Oh, that's not annoying.
- 1:05:31Screaming for an entire cross -country flight.
- 1:05:33Oh, well, why not give Lay's another chance?
- 1:05:36All right. See? Yeah, they do taste good, but
- 1:05:40that crunch just doesn't annoy me. Say, let me
- 1:05:42see that bag. Now that's a beautiful sound. By
- 1:05:46the way, did anyone ever tell you you have a
- 1:05:47very irritating voice? I'm sorry. No, keep talking.
- 1:05:51I like it. Lay's is winning lots of taste tests
- 1:05:53lately. But see for yourself. Look for the Lay's
- 1:05:55Challenge booth in your area. Hey, you don't
- 1:05:58become America's best -selling potato chip without
- 1:06:00winning a lot of local taste buds. As an independent

- 1:07:07to Phillies Replay, a rebroadcast of a great
- 1:07:09game in Phillies history. Now let's return to
- 1:07:12the Phillies and the New York Mets, June 11th,
- 1:07:141985. Oh, this huge lead by the Phillies. John
- 1:07:18Felski's going to make a couple of quick changes
- 1:07:20and get Greg Gross in the game. He's going to
- 1:07:23play first, and that's Steve Jelts, who will
- 1:07:25play shortstop. Nine on Calvin Chiraldi will
- 1:07:36be one in the third innings. Ten hits, ten runs,
- 1:07:38they're earned, no walks, and a strikeout. Phillies'
- 1:07:48team record for runs scored is 23 against Pittsburgh
- 1:07:51in 1900. And in 1980 against Atlanta, they scored
- 1:07:5817 runs. Their most recent large explosion of
- 1:08:03runs, so they have 16 already tonight. And believe
- 1:08:08it or not, here the Mets batting in the third,
- 1:08:10and they're just batting their seventh batter
- 1:08:11as Charles Hudson has faced the minimum, even
- 1:08:15though he's given up a couple of hits. This is
- 1:08:18Clint Hurdle. Hurdle playing right field. Santana,
- 1:08:22the shortstop, and then Sisk, the pitcher, will
- 1:08:25bat here. count of one ball and one strike. Ben
- 1:08:41Hurdle playing for the second consecutive night.
- 1:08:44He was in left field last night, gets a start
- 1:08:46in right field tonight for Davey Johnson. Hudson,
- 1:08:54all he wants to do is go out and throw some fastballs.
- 1:08:58Work on some things right now. Get the ball over
- 1:09:38And the pitch is outside, and it's three balls
- 1:09:40and two strikes now on Hurdle. Former Kansas
- 1:09:43City Royal also played in the Cincinnati organization.
- 1:09:47There's a hard ground ball. Base hit to right
- 1:09:49field. So Hurdle leads off with a base hit to
- 1:09:53right. Hit number three for the Mets. They had
- 1:09:57three hits now. They had two in the first inning,
- 1:09:59but Backman was caught stealing, and Hernandez
- 1:10:02was called out at second trying to stretch a
- 1:10:04single into a double and a fine throw by Von
- 1:10:07Hazel. Pierre Hurdle or Hernandez had beaten
- 1:10:10the play. Here's Rafael Santana batting at 230,
- 1:10:15the shortstop. He fouls it out of play. And Hurdle,
- 1:10:23leadoff base runner in the third inning. And
- 1:10:26the score, if you're just tuning us in, the Phillies
- 1:10:2916 and the Mets nothing. A nine -run first and
- 1:10:34a seven -run second. with a double, and the Mets
- 1:10:50have runners on second and third with nobody
- 1:10:52out here in the third. And Hudson has to find
- 1:11:04some way now to pitch with a 16 -run lead. Here's
- 1:11:08Doug Sisk who will bat for himself, the third
- 1:11:10pitcher employed by the Mets tonight. Sisk doesn't
- 1:11:14bat very often, and so far this season he's 0
- 1:11:17-4. and he struck out four of the five times.
- 1:11:24Hudson will work from the stretch. Phillies,
- 1:11:27of course, with the infield back and bounces
- 1:11:30one up there. Swing and a miss by Sisk. We have
- 1:11:45a note here. It's supposed to rain overnight.
- 1:11:56This could be a very long evening. And Sisk fouls
- 1:12:01it off of the plate. One ball and two strikes
- 1:12:03on Doug Sisk. I've had a couple postponements
- 1:12:07in baseball tonight out in Cincinnati, and I
- 1:12:09believe also in Cleveland there was a game rain.
- 1:12:24And Sisk hits a little ground ball to Jelts,
- 1:12:26a run will score. And Jelts will throw out Doug
- 1:12:29Sisk. And it is 16 -1 in favor of the Phillies.
- 1:12:34There are a lot of Mets fans here. There were
- 1:12:36a lot of them here last night. And you haven't
- 1:12:39heard much from them tonight so far. And they
- 1:12:42sent up a cheer there as that ball sent Santana
- 1:12:46to third and scores Hurdle with a run for New
- 1:12:49York. And now to the top of the order and Wally
- 1:12:51Backman, who's single to center his first time
- 1:12:53up. Backman batting at .227. Takes a fastball
- 1:12:58for a strike. Luis Aguayo started the game at
- 1:13:07short, but jelts in there now. There's a hard
- 1:13:11ground ball. Carbon copy of his base hit in the
- 1:13:14first inning. And Santana will score. The Mets
- 1:13:18have another run, and it's 16 -2. Hits it up
- 1:13:31the middle for a base hit. RBI number six on
- 1:13:34the year for Backman. And Howard Johnson the
- 1:13:37batter. Johnson flied out to Gary Maddox his
- 1:13:40first time up. He's 0 for 1. Came into the game
- 1:13:47batting at 172. On the scoreboard tonight. Montreal
- 1:13:58now leads their game 3 -0. over the Cubs after
- 1:14:00four. That's Dennis Eckersley against Mickey
- 1:14:03Mailer, who's pitching another shutout. Oh, that
- 1:14:08ball's hit deep, but foul down the line and out
- 1:14:11of play. Long enough to be out of here, but foul.
- 1:14:20The count one and one on Howard Johnson. Mailer
- 1:14:23pits a shutout, a one -hitter his last time out
- 1:14:25against San Francisco, and has four shutout innings
- 1:14:28tonight against the Cubs. the Mets have come
- 1:14:38out with four hits in this inning. Howard Johnson
- 1:14:48picks up his first hit, and the Mets have runners
- 1:14:51on first and second with one out, and Keith Hernandez
- 1:14:53the batter. Hernandez singled to left and then
- 1:14:58was thrown out at second, trying to stretch it
- 1:15:00into a double and a final. 11 -1 Pittsburgh over
- 1:15:08St. Louis after four and a half. Bill Madlock
- 1:15:11hit number three. Tony Pena hit number three
- 1:15:13in that game. L .A. at Cincinnati postponed.
- 1:15:18Atlanta three, San Francisco nothing after three.
- 1:15:23Bob Horner has a home run in that game for Atlanta.
- 1:15:26His sixth of the year, and that makes it at least
- 1:15:30four to nothing. And Houston won San Diego nothing
- 1:15:33after an inning. Bill Doran with number five.
- 1:15:39One and one on Hernandez. Two games postponed
- 1:15:42in the American League. Minnesota at Cleveland,
- 1:15:44Baltimore at Detroit. Looks like a lot of weather
- 1:15:47is headed this way. Hernandez off Hudson. Oh,
- 1:15:56that might have hurt him. Wheels and throws to
- 1:15:58first. He gets Hernandez. The runners will move
- 1:16:02up. We'll see how Hudson is. I guess he's okay.
- 1:16:07Going right off his leg. Says he's okay. The
- 1:16:24runners have moved up. And Gary Carter will be
- 1:16:28the batter. Carter grounded out to Rick Shue
- 1:16:30his first time up. Mets have two runs in in the
- 1:16:35inning here, but still trail at 16 -2. Carter
- 1:16:47with a hard... to his right on this ball hit
- 1:17:07hard by Carter. Knocks it down. Tries to get
- 1:17:14Howard Johnson before he gets to third and can't
- 1:17:17do it. So the Mets have a big inning here. They've
- 1:17:20picked up three. Danny Heap the batter with runners
- 1:17:23at the corners and two out. And Heap gets a vicious
- 1:17:26foul into the box seats down the first baseline.

- 1:20:21Replay, a rebroadcast of a great game in Philly's
- 1:20:24history. Now let's return to the Phills and the
- 1:20:26New York Mets, June 11th, 1985. And Gary Carter
- 1:20:31will get the rest of the night off for the New
- 1:20:33York Mets, and seldom -used Ron Reynolds will
- 1:20:35come in and catch him. He's going to play in
- 1:20:44center field. And Danny Heap, there's Christensen.
- 1:20:49And Danny Heap has moved over to first base,
- 1:20:51so they're going to get Hernandez out of the
- 1:20:53game also. This is like a game in Clearwater
- 1:20:57right now, a lot of changes. And Bo Diaz will
- 1:21:03bat here for the Phillies. Ground rule double
- 1:21:17to left center his first time up. Bob Gorman
- 1:21:20and then a ground rule double down the right
- 1:21:22field line. Bob Chiraldi his second time. There's
- 1:21:27a hard ground. Walked and scored in the first.
- 1:21:54Tripled and scored. will be a one -out base runner
- 1:22:28now as Diaz is retired at second. And Greg Gross
- 1:22:33will be the batter. He's batting now in the number
- 1:22:35eight spot vacated by Aguayo. Gross is playing
- 1:22:40at first base. This will be Gigi's first at bat
- 1:22:45of the night. Aguayo was hit by a pitch and got
- 1:22:50an RBI out of it as the bases were loaded and
- 1:22:53he grounded. Smith is down low. It's 2 -0. Greg
- 1:23:05Gross batting at an even 250. And another pitch
- 1:23:18missed. Baseline the count at 3 -2. Fielded there
- 1:23:49by Irish Mike Ryan. Some people in the upper
- 1:23:54deck trying to start a wave here at Veterans
- 1:23:57Stadium, and that has never been done here. And
- 1:24:01thankfully it has not caught on tonight. There's
- 1:24:04Dave Bristol, who's the third base coach. Rose
- 1:24:11hits it hard, but right to Santana. It could
- 1:24:13be two. And it is a double play. The Phillies
- 1:24:18are gone here in the third. No runs, no hits.
- 1:24:21One New York error and nobody left on base. We
- 1:24:24head to the top of the fourth. Phillies 16 and
- 1:24:27the New York Mets 3. You're listening to Phillies

- 1:26:42in Philly's history. Now let's return to the
- 1:26:45Phils and the New York Mets, June 11, 1985. The
- 1:26:49bad feature here is that we do have rain on the
- 1:26:51way. There's no question about that, and you're
- 1:26:53starting to hear some thunder in the background.
- 1:26:55Dave Montgomery just told us now it's midnight,
- 1:26:58not 10 anymore. Well, that's good. It sounds
- 1:27:01like it's going to be 9 .30 instead of 10. Here's
- 1:27:05George Foster to lead it off for New York. Foster
- 1:27:09has had only one at -bat tonight. He struck out.
- 1:27:24Fouled away. Charles Hudson given a lot to work
- 1:27:30with, and I would guess that Hudson's in somewhat
- 1:27:32the same situation that Carmen was in the ninth
- 1:27:35inning yesterday, where he's trying to get the
- 1:27:37ball over the plate. And the Mets are up there
- 1:27:39teeing off a little bit. He's in a no -win situation
- 1:27:43now. He goes out there and everybody says, well,
- 1:27:45just throw fastballs and get it over with. Well,
- 1:27:49you throw a lot of fastballs, you give up a lot
- 1:27:50of base hits, so you still have to go out there
- 1:27:52and pitch. I don't like your choice of terms,
- 1:27:54though. Oh, no -win situation. Yeah, I don't
- 1:27:56like that. Yeah, well, he'll win, has a good
- 1:27:57chance to win the game, but now as a pitcher,
- 1:27:59it's tough for him. Hustling back for this as
- 1:28:02Wilson can't get it. The ball's in play at the
- 1:28:04base of the fence. Foster will go to second.
- 1:28:07He's got a stand -up double. Foster doubles to
- 1:28:11right center to lead off the New York fourth
- 1:28:14inning. And we'll see what happens here. And
- 1:28:18Foster is a hanging slider out over the plate
- 1:28:21as he's trying to mix up his pitches. And he
- 1:28:24hung a breaking ball. The batter is Hurdle. And
- 1:28:32he takes out side ball one. Hurdle got a base
- 1:28:35hit. And scored a run, the first run for New
- 1:28:37York last inning. Foster at center. Second, Hudson
- 1:29:03has given up eight hits tonight. It'll be interesting
- 1:29:07to see the way John Felski handles his pitching
- 1:29:10staff tonight. Of course, you'll want Hudson
- 1:29:11to go five to win it. They're having trouble
- 1:29:14with the signs, and the infielders want to know
- 1:29:16what the signs are. It's very important to them.
- 1:29:19They've gone to some set of signs that Jelts
- 1:29:20doesn't understand right now. So he just wants
- 1:29:23to make sure that he does understand them. Infielders
- 1:29:27like to know the signs because they'll position
- 1:29:29themselves differently on a fastball or a breaking
- 1:29:31ball. changeup. And now Bo Diaz and Hudson want
- 1:29:36to make sure they're in sync. Count of a ball
- 1:29:47and a strike on Hurdle. A one -time Sports Illustrated
- 1:29:51cover boy. He was supposed to be an end -all.
- 1:29:53Knocked down at first by Gross. Going to need
- 1:29:55the cover. Hudson is there. Over to third base
- 1:29:57goes Foster. So the Mets have a chance to pick
- 1:30:07up another run here. Now Santana, he's one for
- 1:30:13one with a double and a run scored. Needless
- 1:30:21to say, the Phillies have kept the infield back
- 1:30:23here as they lead at 16 -3. Check swing, roll,
- 1:30:43or foul. Nothing in two to count on Rafael Santana.
- 1:30:46This is one of those situations where you don't
- 1:30:48have to make a big choice about how you play
- 1:30:49your infield. The Phillies are playing for outs.
- 1:31:02In the air to center. That'll get a run home.
- 1:31:06Maddox makes the catch. Foster comes. And it
- 1:31:10is now a 16 -4 game. Gives Santana his 12th run
- 1:31:14batted in. Out number two. So Hudson's ERA is
- 1:31:26going to go up tonight no matter what else happens.
- 1:31:31And Doug Sisk is going to bat again. He chased
- 1:31:34home the first run on an infield ground ball.
- 1:31:37Phillies had a 16 -0 lead at that time. Into
- 1:31:41left field. Hayes drops the ball. It's in play.
- 1:31:44Siska safe at first base. Probably have to charge
- 1:31:47him with an error. He might have had trouble
- 1:31:50with the lights. Good chance he did, but he is
- 1:31:54being given an error. It looked like he flinched
- 1:31:56on this ball in the last second like it was in
- 1:31:58the lights. It was a low -line drive. He did.
- 1:32:01Yeah, he's played it off to the side there. But
- 1:32:04they have to give him an error. The Phillies
- 1:32:08have committed their first error of the ballgame.
- 1:32:11Wally Backman, troublesome as usual tonight,
- 1:32:13two for two, takes a strike. Backman has scored
- 1:32:16a run, knocked in a run. 16 -4, the Phillies
- 1:32:20lead in the fourth. Backman went. Nothing into
- 1:32:32the count on Wally Backman. Our good friend Matty
- 1:32:40Gukas says, here's a shot in the left field,
- 1:32:42a base hit. Anyway, I am openly rooting for Gukas
- 1:32:46to be the next 76er coach. Wally Backman is three
- 1:32:50for three. Great guy. You like to see those ex
- 1:32:53-announcers get those coaching jobs. Well, he's
- 1:32:55replacing an ex -announcer. Cunningham was an
- 1:32:59announcer, too, and a pretty good one. He might
- 1:33:00go back to it now. Very quietly, the Mets are
- 1:33:05staying after the Phillies tonight. That's a
- 1:33:08good way to put it, Wills. They have not given
- 1:33:10up, and you have to give them a lot of credit.
- 1:33:11I mean, they're out there swinging the bats,
- 1:33:13getting base hits, and scoring runs. 16 -4. Still,
- 1:33:20a 12 -run lead is pretty cushy. Howard Johnson
- 1:33:26has flied out to center, single to center. If
- 1:34:07not here, how about in the general Philadelphia,
- 1:34:10Delaware Valley area? Yeah, that's affirmative.
- 1:34:14Okay. What a wonderful place that is. And the
- 1:34:24Mets, of course, train right down the road in
- 1:34:26St. Petersburg. The Phillies see quite a bit
- 1:34:28of the Mets every spring. Anybody who wants to
- 1:34:30come down to spring training next year can see
- 1:34:32the Phillies and the Mets real easy. with a two
- 1:34:55-base hit. Well, this ball is almost a home run.
- 1:35:01That hit right above the second three there at
- 1:35:04the 330 and bounced back into play. It's hard
- 1:35:07to believe that Backman didn't score on that
- 1:35:09play either. With two out, you'd think he would
- 1:35:11have been running, and he probably was, or maybe
- 1:35:12he thought it was a home run. But when you said
- 1:35:15that two runs are going to score... up in the
- 1:35:24bullpen. I know John Felski didn't want to do
- 1:35:27this. He definitely wants to see Hudson get the
- 1:35:29victory here tonight, but more than that, he
- 1:35:31wants to see the Phillies get the victory. And
- 1:35:34so Rucker is throwing as Christensen takes a
- 1:35:37called strike. He's batting at 140 with a homer
- 1:35:39and six runs batted in. Pick up two runs here
- 1:36:15in the fourth inning. They do so on three. It
- 1:36:18was an error. And two men left on base. Middle
- 1:36:22of the fourth. 16 -5 Phillies. You're listening

- 1:38:31Call 1 -800 -545 -1985. 1 -800 -545 -1985. You're
- 1:38:36listening to Phillies Replay, a rebroadcast of
- 1:38:39a great game in Phillies history. Now let's return
- 1:38:41to the Phillies and the New York Mets, June 11,
- 1:38:441985. Off the fourth inning for the Phillies,
- 1:38:4716 -5. Phillies have had a big night, fantastic
- 1:38:53start tonight, 9 in the first, 7 in the second.
- 1:38:57Right back to the mound, fielded by Sisk, and
- 1:39:00he makes the play. Hudson is out. for three tonight.
- 1:39:12Home run and grand slam home run both in the
- 1:39:16first inning. And a Texas Lake single to left
- 1:39:19in the 30th scored three runs. The Phillies continue
- 1:39:35with more runs than hits. 16 runs on 14 hits.
- 1:39:40One of the New York runs, by the way, is not
- 1:39:42earned. Phillies have eight extra base hits in
- 1:39:48the ballgame, the two home runs by ace. So more
- 1:39:52extra base hits than singles. Steve Carlton,
- 1:39:59who was sitting in the dugout and saying, can't
- 1:40:02you save some of these for tomorrow night? Really,
- 1:40:04the Phillies are well aware. the fact that they
- 1:40:07haven't scored many runs, and they'll face a
- 1:40:09tough pitcher tomorrow night in Ron Darling.
- 1:40:13And Hayes is going to be a strikeout victim.
- 1:40:15Vaughn's out of there. First time the Mets have
- 1:40:17gotten him out tonight. And that's only the second
- 1:40:21Philly batter to strike out. The other was Hudson.
- 1:40:26Now, needless to say, the Phillies have not been
- 1:40:28retired in order tonight, and here is Rick Shue
- 1:40:30to try to keep that going. Shue has won for three.
- 1:40:34It was a triple, and he scored a run. Doug Sisk
- 1:41:08trying to use this outing to get himself back
- 1:41:10to where he was before, and that was a very effective
- 1:41:13relief pitcher with a great sinker ball and a
- 1:41:15hard slider. Mostly the sinker ball. Just caught
- 1:41:23a corner with that 2 -2 here on Shue. But he
- 1:41:26couldn't quite hang on to it, and Shue does indeed
- 1:41:28keep the inning alive with a base hit. A tough
- 1:41:30play for Wally Backman, who got to that ball
- 1:41:32and then wasn't able to hold it. Samwell will
- 1:41:46bat. He's two out of three. Scored two runs,
- 1:41:49stole two bases, knocked in a run. Sets needs
- 1:41:57that pitch. That's where he lives down there.
- 1:42:09Sammy goes for a high pitch. One ball, one strike
- 1:42:11on Samwell. and down the lineup tonight. Everybody
- 1:42:19contributed, including pitcher Charles Hudson,
- 1:42:21who had a RBI single. Every player has had a
- 1:42:28hit with the exception of Aguayo, and he got
- 1:42:30an RBI when he was hit by a pitch. And then,
- 1:42:34of course, some newcomers have come into the
- 1:42:36game. a few changes too. A lot of changes. I
- 1:42:50was talking about the Phillies contributing offensively.
- 1:42:51I don't believe either of those have contributed.
- 1:43:19Outside outs it down the line. See if somebody
- 1:43:20reaches out here. Yep. That ball was probably
- 1:43:23going to go into the stands anyway, so it would
- 1:43:25have been a ground rule double at that point.
- 1:43:27That guy just took one off the chest for his
- 1:43:30efforts. So now the Phillies have 16 hits as
- 1:43:36well as 16 runs, and the batter is Jelts. What
- 1:43:41did Jelts do in his last at -bat? He hasn't yet.
- 1:43:45This is his first at -bat? Yeah, he's in Schmitz
- 1:43:47Hall after... Schmidt, he had a big night. Two
- 1:43:50for two, two runs scored, and two RBIs, and a
- 1:43:53walk. Jelts rolls one towards second. Backman
- 1:43:57makes the play and throws him out. So Jelts is
- 1:44:01out, and so are the Phillies in the fourth. They
- 1:44:03fail to score. They get two hits in the inning
- 1:44:05and leave two men on base. We've finished four
- 1:44:07fast ones tonight, and the Phillies lead the
- 1:44:10Mets 16 -5. You're listening to Phillies Replay

- 1:46:08wait? Demand better. See your local Olds retailer
- 1:46:10today, where people are getting more cars for
- 1:46:13less money. Frankly, folks, that's the best news
- 1:46:16I've heard in quite some time. You're listening
- 1:46:20to Philly's Replay, a rebroadcast of a great
- 1:46:22game in Philly's history. Now let's return to
- 1:46:25the Phils and the New York Mets, June 11, 1985.
- 1:46:30Ron Reynolds will bat for the first time tonight.
- 1:46:32He's a .500 hitter. Two hits and four at bats.
- 1:46:41Reynolds from Wichita, Kansas, only 26 years
- 1:46:43of age. And like we always said when Gary Carter
- 1:46:47played in Montreal, your backup man doesn't get
- 1:46:49much work. So from Davey Johnson's point of view,
- 1:46:54this was a perfect game in which to spell Carter
- 1:46:57and get Reynolds in there behind the plate, give
- 1:46:59him some work. We're in the fifth inning, the
- 1:47:02Phillies ahead 16 -5. Like the center, congratulations
- 1:47:06along Andy to Donna and Lou Labar on the birth
- 1:47:08of their daughter Jacqueline this past Sunday,
- 1:47:10June 9th. John is a sister of Debbie Bruner,
- 1:47:13who works down in the fan accommodation room
- 1:47:15here at the vet. That's a fair ball. And Reynolds
- 1:47:19is going to get another hit. Hayes over to pick
- 1:47:21it off the fence. And a base hit for Ron Reynolds.
- 1:47:24Sounded like he broke his bat on that. Hit it
- 1:47:27hard, too, for breaking your bat. That is the
- 1:47:3011th hit for New York. Fastball right on his
- 1:47:33hands, and he did break his bat. Shoots that
- 1:47:36ball right down the line. Hayes gets a good carom.
- 1:47:38And Reynolds not going to try and score. You
- 1:47:41know, the way the Mets have been hurting for
- 1:47:42runs, this is a big night for them to get 11
- 1:47:44runs. Or excuse me, 11 hits, I should say, on
- 1:47:47five runs. Two teams tonight that are really
- 1:47:51coming out of it offensively. This is Danny Heap.
- 1:47:55He has not contributed, having flied out and
- 1:47:58popped out. Ground ball on the right side. That
- 1:48:04goes through for a base hit. And here come the
- 1:48:05Mets again. First two runners aboard to start
- 1:48:08the fifth inning. hits in the Phillies now. Isn't
- 1:48:18that amazing? And the Phillies are going to get
- 1:48:20that bullpen up again. I know John Foskey doesn't
- 1:48:23want to do it. This is the key inning for Hudson.
- 1:48:26He needs to finish this one to be able to pick
- 1:48:29up the victory. Left -hander Dave Rucker is working.
- 1:48:32And he's trying to get him through five. Foster
- 1:48:38has struck out, doubled, and scored. 28 hits
- 1:49:01in this ballgame. Four innings into the fifth
- 1:49:05half of the game. Look out. Here's a game that
- 1:49:11could be range -shortened to five innings, and
- 1:49:12you never know the difference. Has enough offense
- 1:49:17already for a full game. of the Padres is a guy
- 1:49:29who said there are going to be an awful lot of
- 1:49:31hitters have great second halves this year because
- 1:49:33they've proved over many seasons that they're
- 1:49:35good hitters so if they didn't hit in the first
- 1:49:37half this year they're going to come on like
- 1:49:39gangbusters now Hudson laboring now in this inning
- 1:49:44with the two hits I mean there were a couple
- 1:49:46of hippity hop hits but still we're now a 3 -0
- 1:49:49count to Foster He's happy he's going to be playing
- 1:50:12golf with Rich Ashburn tomorrow. It's supposed
- 1:50:17to rain like crazy here tomorrow in the daytime,
- 1:50:19isn't it? Top foul, back out of play. Great catch
- 1:50:24by a fan in the upper deck. A one -handed grab.
- 1:50:30So we've got a full count. Nobody out. Phillies
- 1:50:43ahead 16 -5 in the fifth. A balk. A balk. Phillies
- 1:50:53have been largely free of the balk calls, which
- 1:50:56bothered them so much last year. That's only
- 1:50:58the third. The first on Hudson. Like he was on
- 1:51:03the rubbers. who had a rip. The Mets have action
- 1:51:30in their bullpen now as well. We mentioned that
- 1:51:34a left -hander, Dave Rucker, throwing for the
- 1:51:36Phillies. Joe Sambito, left -hander, throwing
- 1:51:40for New York. Let's run back to them. 16 to nothing.
- 1:52:44And they've seen the Mets come back with three,
- 1:52:46two, and now one. So Hurdle strikes out. That'll
- 1:53:09be the third strikeout for Hudson. He has kind
- 1:53:17of a loop in his swing. See him really uppercut
- 1:53:19the ball and swing over top of that pitch. Now
- 1:53:26the batter is Rafael Santana. He has doubled
- 1:53:30and is only official at bat. Knocked in a run
- 1:53:32on a sacrifice fly last time. As you mentioned,
- 1:53:49Sambito up and throwing Sisk in the on -deck
- 1:53:51circle. At this point in the game with the Mets
- 1:53:54coming back in it the way they have been, Sisk
- 1:53:56would be lifted for a pinch hitter. If Santana
- 1:54:01keeps it going. And he does. Face hit. Mets get
- 1:54:08another run. Santana singles to center field.
- 1:54:29WGMP Philadelphia. Rusty Staub. 41 years of age
- 1:54:35from New Orleans. And we'll see what he can do.
- 1:54:39Rusty has, so far this year, Staub has picked
- 1:54:42up four pinch hits, four for 15. batter. Tough
- 1:55:05to strike him out. He chokes up on the bat. A
- 1:55:07punch shot towards second. Sammy playing deep
- 1:55:09with plenty of time to get the slow -footed stop.
- 1:55:11And he is out. The Mets grab two more back here
- 1:55:15in the fifth inning. They do so on three hits.
- 1:55:19One man left on base. Middle of the fifth. It's
- 1:55:21an official ball game and the Phillies lead 16
- 1:55:23-7. You're listening to Phillies Replay on the
- 1:55:28game. The new 12 -10 a .m. Back in a moment.

- 1:57:39new ballgame. If you love sports, you'll love
- 1:57:42the game. 1210 on your AM dial. You're listening
- 1:57:50to Philly's Replay, a rebroadcast of a great
- 1:57:52game in Philly's history. Now let's return to
- 1:57:55the Phils and the New York Mets, June 11th, 1985.
- 1:58:00Joe Sambito, left -hander from New York, who's
- 1:58:02living at home with mom these days after being
- 1:58:04cut in spring training by the Astros. And Sambito,
- 1:58:08who hails from Long Island, got the perfect job.
- 1:58:11He's pitching now for the New York Mets. He's
- 1:58:13been seldom used, although he was briefly in
- 1:58:15last night's ballgame and also worked on Sunday,
- 1:58:17so they're starting to gain. A little more confidence
- 1:58:20in San Vito. But his numbers are tough right
- 1:58:22now. 8 .22 earned run average. Phillies batting
- 1:58:30in the last of the fifth inning. They lead New
- 1:58:31York 16 -7. But you've got to give the Mets a
- 1:58:34lot of credit because they trailed 16 -0. And
- 1:58:37they have come back scoring more runs tonight
- 1:58:40so far than they did in all of last night's ballgame.
- 1:58:43And runs do not come easily for New York, as
- 1:58:45we've been pointing out. Glenn Wilson leads it
- 1:58:49off for the Phillies. He's two for three. Glenn
- 1:58:53has single and double, scoring twice, driving
- 1:58:56one in. Wilson has now driven in runs in three
- 1:59:22consecutive games. He went after it. 0 -2 the
- 1:59:29count on Wilson. Bo Diaz and Gary Maddox to follow.
- 1:59:51But Willie was skipping rope to get out of the
- 1:59:53way of that. Ball and two strikes on Wilson.
- 1:59:58Zambito has gone through a couple of arm operations.
- 2:00:0132 years of age from Brooklyn, New York. He's
- 2:00:04had actually three elbow operations. But he's
- 2:00:07a battler. Talking to him on the bench last night,
- 2:00:11he was telling me, he says, I don't have the
- 2:00:12stuff I once did, but I do believe I can still
- 2:00:15get Major League hitters out. He said, but after
- 2:00:18a long, long layoff like I had, pitch all over
- 2:00:22again. How to work on a hitter, how to set him
- 2:00:24up. It's surprising how much I forgot about pitching.
- 2:00:32He's a left -hander, but he plays tennis. He
- 2:00:34writes and he eats right -handed. Two and two
- 2:00:46on Wilson. walk given the Phillies. They've been
- 2:01:25doing this with their bats tonight. Bo Diaz will
- 2:01:30be the hitter. Bo with a pair of doubles has
- 2:01:33been on base all three times. The other was on
- 2:01:35an error by Santana. And Bo has knocked in three
- 2:01:38runs, doubling his RBI total for the year. Meantime,
- 2:01:44the Mets are happy to see that Montreal is leading
- 2:01:47Chicago 3 -1 there in the seventh inning tonight.
- 2:01:51Davis with a home run to account for Chicago's
- 2:01:53only score. Mickey Mailer, the job he's doing
- 2:01:59for Montreal. They rescued him from oblivion.
- 2:02:02He's given them two good outings. Chomping at
- 2:02:25the bit to try and get back in and contribute
- 2:02:27a little bit after this season that he's had
- 2:02:30in last year. And he gets that ball up and out
- 2:02:32over the plate from Sambito and shoots it into
- 2:02:34the corner. Three doubles for him. On base four
- 2:02:39consecutive times, and Gary Maddox will be the
- 2:02:42hitter. You know, that feat that Ron Hayes accomplished
- 2:02:44tonight, it had only been done one previous time
- 2:02:47in Phillies history, and that was by Andy Semenik,
- 2:02:50as we mentioned, back in 1949. Two home runs
- 2:02:53and... Now the Mets have the infield in. And
- 2:03:06Maddox going to drop in ahead. A broken bat shot
- 2:03:09to left center field. Wilson scores. Bowe to
- 2:03:13third base. 17 -7 Phillies. They want to get
- 2:03:17their double -figure lead back again. The Mets
- 2:03:21have been chipping away at the Phillies and have
- 2:03:23done a great job of doing that tonight and not
- 2:03:25quitting. The Phillies had a shot last inning
- 2:03:28to get a couple, didn't get it. And now a broken
- 2:03:31bat hit there by Gary Mets. He's had a big night,
- 2:03:35as most of these people have. And here is Greg
- 2:03:39Gross, not a starter in the game. Greg, 0 for
- 2:03:411, grounded into a double play. Greg coming off
- 2:03:56a big ball game here when he was in the lineup
- 2:03:58Sunday, or excuse me, Saturday, I should say.
- 2:04:05right field for the Phillies Saturday. Had three
- 2:04:08hits in that ballgame, including an RBI double
- 2:04:10and even stole a base. John Walkenfuss has moved
- 2:04:16into the on -duck circle to bat. He was starting
- 2:04:42to get a little itchy. The fans are cheering
- 2:04:48because the scoreboard has popped up for the
- 2:04:51first time tonight. It's been on vacation here
- 2:04:53the last couple of days. It looks like it still
- 2:04:55should be. Yeah, it's not perfect, but then who
- 2:04:58is? Who's perfect? That board has been here 15
- 2:05:01years. And this is the last year, right? Right.
- 2:05:07That board will go into the ground next. similar
- 2:05:12to it, up on top of the stadium, up off the roof,
- 2:05:14near the runners. One and two, the count on Gross.
- 2:05:33Great takes high of ball. Gross does not often
- 2:05:35face left -handed pitching. I was just mentioning
- 2:05:58a little while ago that he's living at home with
- 2:06:00mom right now. He says it's a perfect situation,
- 2:06:04he says, because she goes to work during the
- 2:06:07day and then I'm out at night. He says the only
- 2:06:08problem is she won't let me bring girls home.
- 2:06:12An age -old problem. Still nobody out here in
- 2:06:45the inning. It is a 17 -7 Phillies lead, and
- 2:06:49the fans are in a festive mood here tonight.
- 2:06:52Of course, he's not. That's ex -Philly infielder
- 2:06:56Davey Johnson. Davey, the answer to all kinds
- 2:06:59of trivia questions. He got the last hit off
- 2:07:02Sandy Koufax. He was with Baltimore, and that
- 2:07:05was at Shea Stadium. Made the final out of the
- 2:07:0969 World Series. is also the teammate of the
- 2:07:14two most prolific home run hitters of all time,
- 2:07:16Hank Aaron and Sandahara O. I think he has the
- 2:07:22most home runs by a second baseman in the season,
- 2:07:24too. He hit over 40 that one year with Atlanta
- 2:07:27when they had four players hit over 40. I believe
- 2:07:29his figure was 43, wasn't it? Somewhere in that
- 2:07:31area, yeah. Tough pitch as he's gotten himself
- 2:07:45to a full count. It's a good thing that revised
- 2:07:52weather forecast has the rain holding off till
- 2:07:54midnight because we'd be pushing the deadline
- 2:07:55here shortly. This long ball game tonight. Ball
- 2:08:02four to Gross. Greg begs a walk. Phillies have
- 2:08:06him loaded. And John Walkenfuss will bat. Swing
- 2:08:20here, batting for Charles Hudson. Well, the last
- 2:08:25time a Philly batter came to the plate with the
- 2:08:27bases full, you know what happened, don't you?
- 2:08:29You were with us in the first inning. You saw
- 2:08:31Hayes ride one right on out of here. Lock and
- 2:08:38fuss hitting at 160 with one RBI. Three for 15
- 2:08:41as a pinch hitter, and he got the run batted
- 2:08:44in as a pinch hitter. Six of them for the Phillies
- 2:08:58last year. 264, a lifetime batter. A run in,
- 2:09:12nobody out for the Phillies in the fifth. Sounds
- 2:09:15like a football game, 17 -7. Sambito said the
- 2:09:31best he has pitched this year, that's Ron Reynolds
- 2:09:33handling him. The best he's pitched this year
- 2:09:35was Sunday when he was up against the Cardinals.
- 2:09:38And, of course, he was the pitcher when Pendleton
- 2:09:40hit the grand slam, but it really was just a
- 2:09:42gapper on which the outfielders collided. spot
- 2:11:00here facing a left -handed pitcher. Atlanta's
- 2:11:03three out of four tonight. Now Rick Shue, the
- 2:12:30batter. One out this inning. Shue has two hits
- 2:12:35tonight and four trips. That's a foul ball, but
- 2:12:46not by much. Oh, that was really ripped. That
- 2:12:51guy hurt his hand down there, too. I don't believe
- 2:12:53that man reached out to catch that ball. Gale
- 2:12:55flips it back. and have a sore hand tomorrow.
- 2:13:02Nice gesture by Gail Clements. One strike on
- 2:13:12Shue. At least batting in the fifth inning now
- 2:13:16with an 18 -7 lead. 293 now after his hit tonight.
- 2:15:02Scored two runs, stolen two bases. Got to be
- 2:15:05a computer in here tonight. The Phillies' team
- 2:15:21record for runs, by the way, is 23. That was
- 2:15:25versus Pittsburgh all the way back in 1900. The
- 2:15:28ball slapped a shortstop. The Phillies have batted
- 2:16:11around for the third time in the game. Incredible.
- 2:16:17Jelts is 0 for 1. He grounded out. What was the
- 2:16:19scoring on that play? 6 -5. Gets jammed. Pops
- 2:16:29a foul back out of play. The Phillies scored
- 2:16:3823 runs in that. Cubs, but that was a 10 -inning
- 2:16:44game. As Andy mentioned, the record is for the
- 2:16:48Phillies is 23 back in 1900. You don't think
- 2:16:51this is going to go extra innings? No. The Phillies
- 2:16:56have had a 9 -run inning, a 7 -run inning, and
- 2:16:58they have 5 in so far this inning. Does that
- 2:17:01add up? There's a bouncer for Santana. Surrounds
- 2:17:10it, makes the play. Second, and the inning is
- 2:17:12over. A five -run fifth for the Phillies. Three
- 2:17:16hits in this inning. And one man left on base.
- 2:17:21At the end of five, it's 21 -7. You're listening
- 2:17:26to Phillies Replay on The Game, the new 1210

- 2:19:44the Phillies. Dave Rucker will now come into
- 2:19:46the game and pitch. In relief of Charles Hudson
- 2:19:49and John Walkenfuss, he'll stay in the game and
- 2:19:52catch. Here's Fuss. He will bat in the number
- 2:19:54nine spot where he pinch hit. And Dave Rucker
- 2:19:57will replace Bo Diaz, who had a big night. Bo
- 2:20:00went three for four with three doubles, knocked
- 2:20:02in three runs. First ball hit hard off Gross'
- 2:20:04glove. Rucker covers. And Wally Backman is retired
- 2:20:07for the first time tonight. Backman had three
- 2:20:10hits so far and has scored a run. Greg Gross
- 2:20:16at first base, where he has been since the Phillies
- 2:20:19made some changes after their nine -run first,
- 2:20:22seven -run second, and five -run fifth. 13 hits
- 2:20:29in the game. Howard Johnson, the batter here,
- 2:20:31has two of them. Both coming from the left side.
- 2:20:37And he'll be followed by John Christensen, who's
- 2:20:40playing in center field. Charles Hudson goes
- 2:20:46the first five and gives up seven runs. Six of
- 2:20:49them earned. Gave up 13 hits. No walks and three
- 2:20:52strikeouts. Dave Rucker on here in the sixth.
- 2:21:06Johnson is retired. So Dave Rucker gets a couple
- 2:21:10of quick outs. In the game, the Phillies have
- 2:21:16seven doubles, two triples, and two home runs
- 2:21:20in their 19 -hit attack. And Christensen, the
- 2:21:27batter, batting in the spot where Keith Hernandez
- 2:21:30was early in the game, he struck out in his only
- 2:21:32at -bat. slider for a strike on the inside corner
- 2:21:38from Dave Rucker. Should Christensen reach base,
- 2:21:55Ron Reynolds is in the on -deck circle. He's
- 2:21:57batting in the spot vacated earlier by Gary Carter.
- 2:22:05side. It's 2 -1 on Christensen. Phillies now
- 2:22:09just two away from tying their club mark for
- 2:22:13run score 23. The Mets have given up the 21 tonight,
- 2:22:16the most in their history to one team in a game.
- 2:22:24Pittsburgh, where the Pirates have beaten the
- 2:22:26Cardinals tonight 13 -2 behind Rick Russell,
- 2:22:29who's 3 -0. Neil Allen, the loser, 1 -4. Bill
- 2:22:33Madlock hit number three, and Tony Pena also
- 2:22:35hit number three. The Pirates had 18 hits in
- 2:22:38the ballgame. Still 3 -1 up at Montreal. Christensen,
- 2:22:47pop -up foul down the line. Gross, a long run,
- 2:22:50could have room, and it's just out of play. That
- 2:22:53game is through seven. The Expos leading the
- 2:22:56Cubs. Jody Davis with the only home run in the
- 2:22:59game, his sixth of the year. George Frazier on
- 2:23:02for Dennis Eckersley. And St. Clair now pitching
- 2:23:05that game. Randy St. Clair behind Mickey Mailer.
- 2:23:13Two balls, two strikes on John Christensen. Appeals
- 2:23:22for the count, three and two. Dave Rucker in
- 2:23:27his first inning. The work behind starter Charles
- 2:23:30Hudson. You're listening to Philly's Replay on
- 2:23:54The Game, the new 1210 AM. Back in a moment.
- 2:23:58While you've been growing, so has Fitzgerald
- 2:24:01Mercy Hospital. Using the latest cancer treatment
- 2:24:04technology, we provide compassionate care to
- 2:24:07ensure the highest quality of life for our patients.
- 2:24:10Margaret Rowley of Drexel Hill is a patient of
- 2:24:12Fitzgerald Mercy. They're very good at explaining
- 2:24:15any questions that you do have. They're not just
- 2:24:18running in and out of the room. They're taking
- 2:24:19the time to treat you as a person, not just a
- 2:24:21patient. And after Margaret went home, the care
- 2:24:24didn't stop. I went home with at least four people's
- 2:24:27different phone numbers. Dieticians, nurses,
- 2:24:30people from the oncology staff. And times where
- 2:24:33I've had to make phone calls, I've received responses
- 2:24:35right back. Dr. Joseph Turchi is director of
- 2:24:38the cancer program. At Fitzgerald Mercy, we can
- 2:24:40do whatever is necessary to assess your disease
- 2:24:44and accurately outline the options for treatment.

- 2:24:56All the care you need, when you need it the most.
- 2:25:00Jim used to worry a lot about his company's future.
- 2:25:03If something happens to me or my brother, what
- 2:25:05will happen to our family business? Would we
- 2:25:08be forced to sell? Or would the business stay
- 2:25:10in the family? Now we need to get this all sorted
- 2:25:12out. Jim didn't know then that business insurance
- 2:25:15could give him the answers he needed. until the
- 2:25:17CNA insurance companies guided him and his brother
- 2:25:20with professional estate and business planning.
- 2:25:22Today, Jim's mind is more at ease. My independent
- 2:25:25agent recommended CNA. CNA's specialists showed
- 2:25:29me how linking life insurance to a buy -sell
- 2:25:31agreement between business partners could help
- 2:25:33avoid a forced sale. They also helped us with
- 2:25:36estate tax planning so we could keep our business
- 2:25:38and the family. It turns out CNA is one of the
- 2:25:41few insurance groups that provide professional
- 2:25:43estate and business planning advice. CNA really
- 2:25:47surprised me. I thought I'd get a policy, but
- 2:25:49I never thought business insurance could work
- 2:25:52this hard. Ask your independent agent about the
- 2:25:55CNA insurance companies and how CNA can work
- 2:25:57harder for you. CNA, for all the commitments
- 2:26:01you make. You're listening to Philly's Replay,
- 2:26:04a rebroadcast of a great game in Philly's history.
- 2:26:06Now let's return to the Phills and the New York
- 2:26:09Mets, June 11, 1985. Wheeler with Andy Musser
- 2:26:15back at the vet, and Glenn Wilson will lead it
- 2:26:17off for the Phillies in the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:26:19Like most Phillies players tonight, Willie's
- 2:26:21had a big night. He's had two hits, knocked in
- 2:26:27a run, scored three. Facing Joe Sambito for the
- 2:26:36first time. Sambito worked the fifth inning.
- 2:26:42He got roughed up for five runs. This is way
- 2:26:48outside with that pitch one and one. Tom Gorman
- 2:26:52started the game. Calvin Chiraldi in the first.
- 2:26:54Doug Sisk in the second. And now Joe Sambito
- 2:26:57in the fifth. Wilson hits it foul out of play
- 2:27:08down the first baseline. Glenn now with seven
- 2:27:13RBIs in his last three games. He stays alive
- 2:27:29with a nubbing foul fielded there by Irish Mike
- 2:27:32Ryan. They'll answer that Philly's hitting instructor
- 2:27:35has moved into the dugout over the past ten games
- 2:27:39or so, and Mike Ryan out on the baselines. Dave
- 2:27:42Bristle, of course, patrolling third. Sambito
- 2:27:50misses up high. Two and two on Glenn Wilson.
- 2:27:55Dave Rucker, the pitcher, waits on deck. He's
- 2:27:57batting in the spot vacated by Bo Diaz, the number
- 2:28:00six hole. And then Gary Maddox. Three balls and
- 2:28:08two strikes now on Wilson. There's Rucker. Wilson
- 2:28:22hits a ground ball to Santana. And the Mets shortstop
- 2:28:25throws him out. And one out here in the sixth.
- 2:28:40And Dave Rucker will get his second at -bat of
- 2:28:43the season. He is 0 for 1. Right at the end of
- 2:28:50spring training in the trade with Yvonne DeJesus
- 2:28:53and Bill Campbell going on to the Cardinals.
- 2:28:55Started the season at Portland. And brought up
- 2:29:00about five weeks ago. Sam Beto's first pitch
- 2:29:05is outside for ball one. Bucker hits it hard
- 2:29:17down the line. Just inside the bag, and the hits
- 2:29:29just keep on coming tonight. Double number eight
- 2:29:37for the Phillies. Rucker gets a fastball away
- 2:29:39from him and hits it right down the line. And
- 2:29:42it caroms off those boxes. Nothing much Foster
- 2:29:44can do. And Rucker on at second with one out.
- 2:29:48Gary Maddox about her. He is single, triple,
- 2:29:52knocked in two, and scored three. Those deluxe
- 2:30:16box seats, guys are taking a beating on this
- 2:30:18foul ball. Maddox came into the game at 257,
- 2:30:33is up his average to 274 with the two hits. is
- 2:31:07alive as he fouls that ball back. Phillies with
- 2:31:1221 runs, 20 hits, and one error. The Mets with
- 2:31:15seven runs, 13 hits, and an error. We're in the
- 2:31:18bottom of the sixth. Outside with a pitch, one
- 2:31:35and two. with a solo home run to lead off this
- 2:31:38game. And then coming along later in the first
- 2:31:41inning to hit a grand slam. Only the second player
- 2:31:44in Phillies history to hit two home runs in an
- 2:31:46inning. The other one, Andy Semenik, back in
- 2:31:491949. Inside with a fastball, two and two on
- 2:31:56Maddox. Bond has driven in six runs in the game.
- 2:32:26Here's Dave Rucker, Phillies pitcher, on at second
- 2:32:29with the Phillies' eighth double of the game.
- 2:32:32One out. It's a great play. Oh, George Foster.
- 2:32:55Doesn't have time to find the wall and leaps
- 2:32:57up and pulls it down. Boy, that ball looked like
- 2:33:00it had a chance to tie the Phillies club record
- 2:33:03of 23 runs. And here's Greg Gross. Gross is grounded
- 2:33:10into a double play, walked and scored tonight.
- 2:33:18Gigi, line drive, extra bases. Gross wall. Looks
- 2:33:32like a double off the bat and a good play by
- 2:33:34Christensen, the outfielder out there, to cut
- 2:33:37it off. Greg Gross has his first hit of the game.
- 2:33:52There's Gross on with hit number 21 for the Phillies.
- 2:33:55And Wackenfuss will be the batter. John popped
- 2:33:58up. Stayed in the game. The catch. Two balls
- 2:34:28and no strikes now on Walkenfuss. And that pitch
- 2:34:40is up high. Philly's record in a game for most
- 2:34:44hits is 26 versus the Cubs in 19 -22. That's
- 2:34:52a game in which they lost and scored 23 runs.
- 2:34:58Here's the strike. In an RBI situation. Von has
- 2:35:31hit two home runs tonight. He's single. He's
- 2:35:34struck out. He's walked. Three for four. Four
- 2:35:39runs scored. Six RBIs. Look at that. And batting
- 2:35:48now against Zambito. Last time up, he walked
- 2:35:50against Zambito with the bases loaded and got
- 2:35:52an RBI. Pitch to Hayes. Tries to check his swing.
- 2:36:17It's over for a strike. 22 ,591. here at the
- 2:36:22vet to see this slugfest tonight He hits it high
- 2:37:05to left, but Foster had a good jump on it. Back
- 2:37:07to the warning track, and right in front of the
- 2:37:10warning track, a good running play by George
- 2:37:12Foster. So Hayes gave it a good ride, but the
- 2:37:15Phillies are gone here in the sixth. They pick
- 2:37:17up one run, two hits, no errors, and two men
- 2:37:21left on base. The Mets go back to the seventh.
- 2:37:24The Phillies lead 22 -7. You're listening to
- 2:37:28Phillies Replay on The Game, the new 1210 AM.
- 2:37:32Back in a moment. John, that's the hugest bubblegum
- 2:37:40bubble I've ever seen. Take a picture. What?

- 2:39:42Replay, a rebroadcast of a great game in Philly's
- 2:39:44history. Now let's return to the Phils and the
- 2:39:47New York Mets. June 11th, 1985. A 22 -7 Phillies
- 2:39:54lead as we go to the seventh inning of play.
- 2:39:57Ron Reynolds will lead it off. He's one for one,
- 2:40:01single and run scored. Reynolds carries a 500
- 2:40:10batting average to the plate. Actually, it's
- 2:40:12higher than that now with that hit. Let's see
- 2:40:17what Reynolds has done this year. He is three
- 2:40:21for five. this year. Rucker in his second inning
- 2:40:34of work for the Bills. Mowed him down 1 -2 -3
- 2:40:36in the sixth. And he falls behind here 3 -1.
- 2:40:55helps him out by swinging at a pitch and popping
- 2:40:57it up. Sammy wants it. And that's one down here
- 2:41:00in the seventh inning. Juan Samuel makes the
- 2:41:07catch and now Danny, everybody's smiling tonight,
- 2:41:09right? You can't smile tonight. When can you?
- 2:41:16Danny Heap. A one for three evening. He also
- 2:41:19scored a run. Imagine the Phillies have scored
- 2:41:24more runs than any team has ever scored against
- 2:41:28the New York Mets. Glad Timmy was here to see
- 2:41:34that. In the air to left field. And caught over
- 2:41:58there by Hayes. By the way, that's Daryl Thomas
- 2:41:59now playing center field for the Phillies. E
- 2:42:02.T. Now here's Foster. He has struck out, doubled,
- 2:42:12and knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly. He has
- 2:42:16also made one great play in the outfield and
- 2:42:18one terrible play. slam by Leon Durham tonight.
- 2:42:32And the Bull has put Chicago on top of Montreal
- 2:42:345 -3. And the Cubs are batting in the ninth.
- 2:42:39Fly ball down the right field line. Going to
- 2:42:41be tough, but it is a foul ball. In play, but
- 2:42:45nobody could get there. The Pirates also did
- 2:42:53heavy scoring tonight. They defeated St. Louis
- 2:42:5613 -2. Rick Russell winning that ball game and
- 2:43:02Neil Allen losing. Cubs have to be very happy
- 2:43:06with what the Phillies have been doing the last
- 2:43:08couple nights because the Mets are, you know,
- 2:43:10right on their tail. And the Cubs apparently
- 2:43:13have pulled out another game tonight or won more
- 2:43:16at that by Montreal, but they've come back and
- 2:43:18won two games in the late innings. He got that
- 2:43:23off the handle of the bat. Hayes is there, and
- 2:43:27that's six ups and six downs since Rucker came
- 2:43:29in the ballgame. Well, here at Veterans Stadium
- 2:43:33in Philadelphia, it is seventh -inning stretch
- 2:43:35time, and there's something to stretch about
- 2:43:37tonight. You're listening to Phillies Replay
- 2:43:43on The Game, the new 1210 AM. Back in a moment.
- 2:44:21It's a great time every time at Harrah's Casino.
- 2:44:31Now you can enjoy a relaxing, hour -long, fun
- 2:44:34-filled, rivable... sing -along. It's a great
- 2:44:38time and it's absolutely free. Just look in Sunday's
- 2:44:42Philadelphia Enquirer for Harrah's and the hottest
- 2:44:44offers in Atlantic City. Oh, Harrah's. Power
- 2:44:51windows and door locks. Air conditioning. Cruise
- 2:44:59control. Driver's side airbag. Cars these days
- 2:45:06can cost a lot more than you bargained for. Or
- 2:45:09maybe they can actually be a bargain. You see,
- 2:45:12the four -door central limited edition costs
- 2:45:14a substantial $2 ,000 less than a comfortably
- 2:45:17equipped Toyota Corolla LE. AM, FM, cassette,
- 2:45:21stereo. So what you are hearing is not what the
- 2:45:26central will cost. It's what you'll be saving.
- 2:45:29Now that's a beautiful sound. Now's the best
- 2:45:32time to get a great lease deal on a Sentra Limited
- 2:45:35Edition at your Nissan dealer. Check your local
- 2:45:37newspaper for more details on other great lease
- 2:45:40deals from Nissan. It's time to expect more from
- 2:45:43a car. Comparison based on 94 MSRPs except passenger
- 2:45:46side airbag and tachometer standard on Corolla
- 2:45:48LE, not available on Sentra. You're listening
- 2:45:53to Philly's Replay, a rebroadcast of a great
- 2:45:55game in Philly's history. Now let's return to
- 2:45:58the Phils and the New York Mets, June 11th, 1985.
- 2:46:02All right, wheels, here's Rick Shue to lead off
- 2:46:04the Phillies' seventh inning. Phils ahead 22
- 2:46:06-7. Shue tonight has tripled, doubled, and single.
- 2:46:17So he's got a shot at the circle, cycle here,
- 2:46:25I'm trying to say. I'm trying to figure out what
- 2:46:28they're pausing for. He's got a shot at the cycle
- 2:46:30here, and he almost had it as he flied out to
- 2:46:32the warning track in his first trip. So his sequence
- 2:46:38tonight has been the fly ball, then the triple,
- 2:46:40then he fouled out, then he got the single, then
- 2:46:43his last time up he got a two -run double. It's
- 2:46:48been a while since a filly has hit for the cycle.
- 2:47:11Johnson, and Howard makes a bad throw, and Shue
- 2:47:14is going to be safe. Howard Johnson threw it
- 2:47:15away, and Shue is going to be awarded second
- 2:47:20base on the overthrow. Probably be an E5 all
- 2:47:22the way with Shue moving to second, just one
- 2:47:25error on the play. Mets already have one error.
- 2:47:30This would be their second in the ballgame. Johnson
- 2:47:32just fires his ball. Danny Heath not able to
- 2:47:35come up with it, and it will be an error all
- 2:47:37the way. Here's Juan Samuel. Sammy tonight has
- 2:47:44three hits. Two singles and a ground rule double.
- 2:47:54A foul back out of play. It's going to be fun
- 2:48:00to pick up the papers tomorrow and read about
- 2:48:02this one, even after having witnessed it. It'll
- 2:48:05be fun to hear all the comments from downstairs
- 2:48:07and the interpretation of the various writers.
- 2:48:14This one, as I said, will play a big part in
- 2:48:16that Jason Stark Tuesday column that he does
- 2:48:19such a great job on in the Enquirer. He does
- 2:48:21do a great job on it. You bet he does. He's a
- 2:48:22good man. I told him that one time, and he said,
- 2:48:25oh, he said, it's easy. You spend your whole
- 2:48:26life at it. Yeah. He works very, very hard. hard
- 2:48:29at that column. That is very, very interesting.
- 2:48:31I like reading the American League stuff because
- 2:48:34we don't find out a whole lot about the American
- 2:48:35League. Well, that's true, but even though we
- 2:48:38follow the National League closely, I always
- 2:48:39see something in there I didn't know, too. I
- 2:48:41mean, for example, I didn't know today that Don
- 2:48:44Leppard had been released to Houston as one of
- 2:48:46the coaches. On the ground and knocked down by
- 2:48:51Johnson. That's a base hit. Infield single for
- 2:48:55Juan Samuel. Johnson did everything he could
- 2:48:58do. This is a fine play by Howard Johnson, who
- 2:49:03is hard to his left, dives for the ball. There
- 2:49:06he gets it. He looks at it like, oh, I have it.
- 2:49:10Makes a strong throw, but it's wide, and Danny
- 2:49:12Heath comes off the bag to get it. So that makes
- 2:49:18it a four -hit game for Juan Samuel. And that
- 2:49:23is the 22nd hit for the Phillies, so they've
- 2:49:25got that run column and hit column evened up
- 2:49:28again tonight. There is Steve Jelts. He is 0
- 2:49:31for 2, and unfortunately for Steve, 0 for his
- 2:49:34last 24. the base hit for Jelts breaking the
- 2:49:55drought. Coming around to score will be Shue.
- 2:49:59Over to third base goes Sammy. Jelts has a double,
- 2:50:02and the Phillies have tied their all -time nine
- 2:50:06-game run scoring record, 23 runs. What a night
- 2:50:12for the Phillies. Jelts gets a double here. That's
- 2:50:15their ninth double just down the line. Sammy
- 2:50:21goes to third. Jelts to second. 23 runs ties
- 2:50:25the all -time record for a nine -inning game.
- 2:50:2723 runs. And the record's sitting out there now
- 2:50:30for Glenn Wilson. And Willie has knocked in a
- 2:50:34run tonight. He already has two hits. He has
- 2:50:38scored three runs. He was on base with a walk
- 2:50:40as well. The Mets are bringing the infield in.
- 2:50:44Nobody out on the inning. Joe Sambito sustaining
- 2:50:48this attack. From the Phillies, they don't have
- 2:50:51anybody up in the bullpen. Most hits for the
- 2:50:55Phillies, by the way, 26. That was against the
- 2:50:58Chicago Cubs back in 1922 in a loss. Shot to
- 2:51:07center field, that'll do it. Over the head of
- 2:51:10Christensen. No doubt about this, baby. Way over
- 2:51:34Christensen's head. One hops off the wall. Ten
- 2:51:42doubles, which is a new club record. What a night,
- 2:51:45Andy. There's a scoreboard that's back in operation.
- 2:51:48And this is the third consecutive game in which
- 2:51:51Wilson has knocked in three runs. See a lot to
- 2:51:56come this baby up tonight. These writers are
- 2:52:00calling their editors asking for extra space
- 2:52:02right now. Dave Rucker has already doubled and
- 2:52:05scored a run. And the Mets now are getting the
- 2:52:09bullpen up. I guess maybe they figure that Zambito
- 2:52:12has taken this long enough. That's the newest
- 2:52:19Met down there. Rick Aguilera starting to throw.
- 2:52:42Here's a look at Ron Darling, who will be the
- 2:52:43pitcher tomorrow night. And that's Dr. K beside
- 2:52:46him. Dwight Gooden. They can't believe what they're
- 2:52:49watching. Do you think they've learned anything
- 2:52:51about how to get Philly hitters out tonight?
- 2:52:52It is. Base hit for Rucker. Late start off second
- 2:52:56by Wilson. He will hold at third. Rucker is two
- 2:52:59for two. We almost have to feel sorry for Joe
- 2:53:02Zambito right now. Taking a beating like this.
- 2:53:04This guy's trying to make a comeback. All kinds
- 2:53:07of arm problems. Here comes Stottlemeyer out
- 2:53:10to talk to... Another pitcher tonight. The Phillies
- 2:53:13have 25 hits, nine of them off Sambito. One more
- 2:53:17to tie the club record in hits. That game that
- 2:53:21they lost, Andy, was 26 -23 to the Chicago Cubs
- 2:53:24on August 25, 1922, when they had 26 hits in
- 2:53:29a losing game. And was that a 10 -inning game?
- 2:53:32No, that was a 9 -inning game. Oh, okay. This
- 2:53:40game where they scored 23 runs in 1900 was in
- 2:53:44eight innings. Obviously a home game. So this
- 2:53:54is going to be a... You know, all these records
- 2:53:56are going to be in an eight -inning game. Eight
- 2:53:59at -bats. Daryl Thomas will hit now for the Phillies,
- 2:54:03getting his first at -bat. Daryl has won for
- 2:54:06ten since joining the Phillies. He's the center
- 2:54:08fielder at this point. I mean, the Phillies have
- 2:54:20struggled so much this year, you would have thought
- 2:54:23that three or four runs would look gigantic.
- 2:54:25Of all the years to throw this game at a team,
- 2:54:27you wouldn't have thought it would be this year.
- 2:54:29It's a lot of pent -up frustration tonight. Well,
- 2:54:32you know, we said that in the first inning when
- 2:54:34the Phillies got nine. I mean, you know, that
- 2:54:36was the night's work right there. Yeah, and the
- 2:54:38Mets have come back with seven. Nothing and two
- 2:54:47on Thomas. to try to grab. Look out, the bat's
- 2:54:58right at his feet, but he makes the catch. Thomas
- 2:55:01fouls out, and that is the first down of the
- 2:55:03inning. Faint boos are heard. Yeah, those are
- 2:55:10just, they have to be mock boos. Even in Philadelphia.
- 2:55:15Can't boo this team tonight. Tomorrow night's
- 2:55:18a different story. Oh, yeah. One run might look
- 2:55:20big tomorrow. Oh, it will. Well, here's Greg
- 2:55:24Gross. He's one for two with an RBI single. A
- 2:55:27walk and a run scored. RBI sitting out there.
- 2:55:33Runners at first and third. One out. Two balls
- 2:56:11and no strikes on Gross. He gets jammed, sends
- 2:56:24a fly ball into center field. Going to get Wilson
- 2:56:26home, though. Here comes Willie for the plate.
- 2:56:29And there's run number 26 and the second RBI
- 2:56:32of the night for Gross. box score. How about
- 2:56:43this box score tomorrow? This one will be all
- 2:56:46over the country tomorrow. People will just look
- 2:56:48at this box score in amazement. Well, I would
- 2:56:50rather see the box score than my scorecard distributed.
- 2:56:53I tell you, it's a mess. It is a mess. Lock and
- 2:56:59fuss, 0 for 1 with a walk. 26 to 7, the Phillies
- 2:57:06lead. 2 ,000 people here tonight, and about 45
- 2:57:18will say they saw this. 3 -1. This has been a
- 2:57:36really bad night for Sambito. The only pitcher
- 2:57:42who escaped tonight was Doug Sisk. He worked
- 2:57:44two and a third innings, gave up two hits, but
- 2:57:46the Phillies did not score on him. Walkenfuss
- 2:57:53draws a walk. That is the fifth walk issued by
- 2:57:56Zambito, and the Phillies have batted around
- 2:57:58again. Fourth time in the ballgame, they've batted
- 2:58:01around. I mean, you go a month without batting
- 2:58:04around. They did it four times in one ballgame,
- 2:58:07and Davey Johnson says, wait a minute. What a
- 2:58:08long night for Davey Johnson and the Mets. Mets
- 2:58:11pitchers have given up ten runs. Ten from Chiraldi,
- 2:58:15ten off Zambito. And six off the starter Gorman.
- 2:58:19He escaped lightly. The man of the night, Von
- 2:58:24Hayes. Oh, nice stop by Heath. Over to Zambito.
- 2:58:30That was a close play at first. Another big inning
- 2:58:34for the Phillies. They've gotten four runs here
- 2:58:37in the seventh inning. There were four hits.
- 2:58:41One error, and we had, what, two men left on
- 2:58:46base? Two left. Two left. Thank you very much.
- 2:58:48At the end of seven innings, 26 -7 Philly. You're
- 2:58:52listening to Philly's replay on the game. Let's
- 2:58:56pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 2:58:58This is the Phil's Radio Network. 12 -10 is now
- 2:59:03the game for the Philly sports fan. 24 hours
- 2:59:06a day, 12 -10 a .m. You're listening to Phillies
- 2:59:15Replay, a rebroadcast of a great game in Phillies
- 2:59:18history. Now let's return to the Phils and the
- 2:59:20New York Mets, June 11, 1985. Clint Hurdle leads
- 2:59:28off the New York eighth inning. Hurdle won for
- 2:59:31three this evening, has played the entire game
- 2:59:32in right field. Rucker's done a nice job since
- 2:59:36coming in. Rucker took over in the sixth inning
- 2:59:38and has retired all six hitters he has faced.
- 2:59:53went after it. One ball, one strike. Clint Hurdle,
- 2:59:59in his rookie year when he was up with Kansas
- 3:00:02City, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
- 3:00:04They thought he was going to be a phenom, and
- 3:00:06it never really happened, and now he's hanging
- 3:00:08on as an extra player. Two balls and a strike.
- 3:00:24Probably a pinch hitter for Sambito. Swing and
- 3:00:33a miss by Hurdle. That's the second strikeout
- 3:00:35for Rucker. And he has retired seven batters
- 3:00:39in a row. I know one thing. We're not going extra
- 3:00:42innings tonight. Santana has doubled. Singled.
- 3:00:48And brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, so
- 3:00:50he's had a pretty good offensive night. Here's
- 3:00:52a bouncing ball. Powell passed third. Shoe after
- 3:00:55it, but it was foul. Ray Knight is in the on
- 3:01:00-deck circle. The bat for Sambito. Believe it
- 3:01:27or not, that's Jesse Orozco up throwing in the
- 3:01:29New York bullpen. That's hard to believe, but
- 3:01:35Davey Johnson must want him to get an inning,
- 3:01:38so to speak. Santana reaches base again. That
- 3:01:47is the first New York batter to draw a walk tonight.
- 3:01:52Parker had retired seven straight hitters. Now
- 3:01:54he will deal with Ray Knight up there batting
- 3:01:56for Sambito. Knight's having a tough year. Hitting
- 3:02:02at 165 with three homers and nine runs batted
- 3:02:05in. 0 for 6 is a pinch hitter. And now the Phillies
- 3:02:11are going to start to get some bullpen action.
- 3:02:13Larry Anderson gets up the throw. the handle
- 3:02:22of the bat. One ball and one strike. Just ran
- 3:02:26into Philly's publicity director and Vice President
- 3:02:28Larry Schenck out in the hall, and he says, after
- 3:02:31this game, there will be a lot of records to
- 3:02:33announce. We've been trying to cover as many
- 3:02:35as we can come up with, but there's going to
- 3:02:38be some more I'm sure we don't know about. Probably
- 3:02:40have them in a box in the paper tomorrow. There'll
- 3:02:42be a bunch of them. The Phillies put out a post
- 3:02:45-game stat sheet for those here in the ballpark.
- 3:02:47That'll make interesting reading tonight. Just
- 3:02:53amazing. And I've got to do all this in one minute
- 3:02:56on Philly's replay? No way. Going to second base
- 3:03:00will be Santana, and he gets there. That'll be
- 3:03:02a wild pitch. Wild pitch. You know one thing
- 3:03:15this game has not had? A pass ball. That's about
- 3:03:18everything else tonight. Rick Shue is going to
- 3:03:32get one more chance to hit for the cycle. He
- 3:03:35has a triple, single, and double tonight, and
- 3:03:38he will lead off the bottom of the eighth against
- 3:03:42Orozco. Greg Gross makes the fielding play, and
- 3:03:48Santana takes third base. Wally Backman comes
- 3:03:59up. He has had three hits this evening, including
- 3:04:01a pair of RBI singles. Backman has had a good
- 3:04:06year against the Phillies. He is batting about
- 3:04:09.500 against Phillies pitching this year. Backman
- 3:04:30grounds a foul. Nice play by Buddy Allison. Buddy
- 3:04:34took over at third base. We've added Buddy this
- 3:04:39year to the Phillies Dream Week group of coaches
- 3:04:43and instructors. He worked on the Mets camp last
- 3:04:45year that was run by Norm Amster and the people
- 3:04:47that do Phillies Dream Week. And Buddy is going
- 3:04:49to come over and work with the Phillies and all
- 3:04:52the fine people we have running the Phillies
- 3:04:54Dream Week group. It's a good thing the rain
- 3:05:08held up tonight. You wouldn't want to see something
- 3:05:10like this get washed out. This has been an all
- 3:05:12-timer. Boy, you never believe weathermen. Imagine,
- 3:05:17you just show up, an ordinary ball game, and
- 3:05:21you saw the Phillies score more runs than they
- 3:05:22ever have. Made a good play with a glove down
- 3:05:36there. A couple guys have sore fingers from tries
- 3:05:39they've made for hard hit foul balls down that
- 3:05:41line. He was ready, wasn't he? You could see
- 3:05:49he was ready. It's two balls and two strikes.
- 3:06:03I think Rucker may be tiring just a bit. This
- 3:06:05is the end of his third inning of work. Oh, that's
- 3:06:16ball four. Backman draws a walk. And Howard Johnson
- 3:06:24will hit. This game got, I won't say it got close.
- 3:06:28But it got to, what, 16 to 7. Right, they came
- 3:06:32within nine. It was 16 -0, and the Mets got a
- 3:06:35seven unanswered run, and then the Phillies started
- 3:06:37scoring again. Ten more after that. The Mets
- 3:06:40really battled back from 16 -0. You know, to
- 3:06:44the point where you thought, well, if they can
- 3:06:46win this game, they might make it interesting,
- 3:06:48and then the Phillies went on another scoring
- 3:06:50spurt. Just had to catch their breath for a while.
- 3:07:09Howard Johnson has had two hits tonight. A single
- 3:07:13and an RBI double. Got those from the left side.
- 3:07:23Batting from the right side, he popped up foul.
- 3:07:26He's won it bad against Rucker. That's a called
- 3:07:33strike. Two and two on... Howard Johnson from
- 3:07:38Clearwater, Florida. The Mets traded a... Brown
- 3:07:52ball to Shue, makes the play to second, and gets
- 3:07:55it over there in time for the final out. So the
- 3:07:58Mets are out in the eighth inning. No runs, no
- 3:08:01hits. Two men left on base. We go to the bottom
- 3:08:03half of the eighth, and the Phillies are ahead
- 3:08:05in this ballgame. 56 -7. You're listening to
- 3:08:09Philly's Replay. Nine hits, ten runs, eight of
- 3:08:17which were earned, five bucks and no strikeouts.
- 3:08:23So it's Jesse Orozco, the left -hander, now taking
- 3:08:26over for the New York Mets to pitch this final
- 3:08:28inning. As the Phillies lead it 26 -7. What'd
- 3:08:34he say? Jesse Orozco. You know, there have been
- 3:08:41reports, rumors really, that Orozco has a bad
- 3:08:44arm. And that he's been used very sparingly by
- 3:08:47New York. I asked a couple of people about that,
- 3:08:51and they denied it. He's in his 19th ballgame
- 3:08:54tonight, but Jesse has saved only six this year.
- 3:09:01Now here's Rick Shue, who has a single, double,
- 3:09:03and triple. Steve Jost did not start the ball
- 3:11:07game. He has gone one for three. It was an RBI
- 3:11:11double in his last trip, breaking an 0 for 24
- 3:11:13for him. That's Sammy's first five -hit game
- 3:11:16in the major leagues. Boy, there will be a lot
- 3:11:21of notes tonight. for the Phillies right from
- 3:11:37the start. A nine -run first inning tonight,
- 3:11:39including two home runs by Hayes in that inning.
- 3:12:00You get guys tonight with seven at -bats. Talk
- 3:12:52about taking your RBI total up in a hurry. 37
- 3:12:57for Wilson right now. More than he produced for
- 3:13:03the Phillies all last year. And that is frustrating.
- 3:13:16People want to boo tonight. They want to boo
- 3:13:17somebody, so they're going to boo this fellow
- 3:13:19fan. On deck hitter now is Tim Corcoran up there
- 3:13:49to bat for Rucker. Rucker's two for two. Larry
- 3:13:57Anderson will be in to pitch the ninth inning
- 3:13:59for the Phillies. Needless to say, the Phillies
- 3:14:07have not been retired in order in this ballgame.
- 3:14:09They've had hits in every inning except the third.
- 3:14:11Their long base runner there was on an error.
- 3:14:16inning, but the third, fourth, and so far this
- 3:14:18one. Scooped up by Backman. Nice play. And the
- 3:14:30Mets get a double play out of that. 4 -6 -3 double
- 3:14:34play. You could see that thing going through,
- 3:14:36but it wouldn't. June 11th. Larry Anderson on
- 3:14:51the pitch for the Phillies. As the Mets come
- 3:14:53to the plate here in the ninth inning. Nice job
- 3:14:57by Rucker. Went three innings tonight. Did not
- 3:15:00give up a hit or a run. Two walks and two strikeouts.
- 3:15:09For the Mets. John Christensen runs. Runnels
- 3:15:19and Danny Heath will be the hitters. Christensen
- 3:15:25did not start tonight. He relieved Keith Hernandez
- 3:15:27in that spot of And how come the Phillies can't
- 3:16:04do, you know, one -third of this when I'm out
- 3:16:07there? This has really been something to watch.
- 3:16:12I mean, something you never forget. These are
- 3:16:13the most runs scored in a game by a National
- 3:16:15League team since 1944 at the Polo Grounds. That's
- 3:16:21what I mean about the records they're going to
- 3:16:22have to look up tonight and the stuff that's
- 3:16:24going to come out of this game is mind -boggling.
- 3:16:39Christensen. He's a tough guy. Plays hard. Davey
- 3:16:44Johnson high on his future. Pops it up. It's
- 3:16:48foul and probably out of play. Gross coming over
- 3:16:51to have a look but no chance. Against Ron Darling
- 3:16:54tomorrow night. Hope he'll make it out to the
- 3:16:55ballpark. Look out. Cushman and Lynch. Christensen
- 3:16:59draws a walk. Anderson gets a strikeout. That's
- 3:17:31the first out of the inning. Danny Heap will
- 3:17:35be the hitter. Heap has had one hit tonight,
- 3:17:51one for four. Mets concentrated their scoring
- 3:17:56in the middle innings, getting three in the third,
- 3:17:59two in the fourth, two in the fifth. the fifth.
- 3:18:31Anderson, just one to three out. hosted 26 runs
- 3:19:03on the scoreboard in 1985. They shrugged it off
- 3:19:07and went on to finish second, three games behind
- 3:19:09the St. Louis Cardinals. The Phils landed in
- 3:19:11fifth. The following season, the Mets went all
- 3:19:14the way, winning the National League East, the
- 3:19:16pennant, and the World Series. The Phils finished
- 3:19:19a distant second in the division. Thanks for
- 3:19:21joining us tonight on Philly's Replay.
