- 0:00What's up everybody, it's day three.
- 0:02We in the building, the Hayward Field building.
- 0:05I'm sitting here currently staring at the I believe it's
- 0:08the emerging elite pole vault. What I was just thinking how
- 0:12lucky are these kids? They are on huge double front
- 0:15gill pits, the amazing AGX pole vault standards.
- 0:19This is really a phenomenal place to pole vault and how
- 0:22lucky they are to be doing so. Lots of great Pacer 1, Pacer FX
- 0:26VS and Pacer composites out there.
- 0:29Just so exciting to be able to see things that our team build
- 0:32by hand being used by these guys and gals.
- 0:36It's really awesome. And then up on the scoreboard,
- 0:38we've got the emergent elite 110 hurdles going again over the
- 0:41continuous C fours and that's enough of a commercial for
- 0:43today. So we're here with day three,
- 0:45bringing you micro interviews from coaches that are here in
- 0:47the coaches hospitality. If the weather holds on me
- 0:50today, we'll get a few more in than we did yesterday, but we're
- 0:53just excited to bring you amazing people who choose to be
- 0:55track and field coaches around the country right here in
- 0:57Eugene, OR for day three of the Oregon National High School
- 1:01Championship. All right, let's kick off day
- 1:04three with our first interview. These guys travelled a long way
- 1:07to get here and I want to find out why.
- 1:09Coach, why don't you go and introduce yourself and tell us
- 1:11where you're from? Good morning, good morning.
- 1:13So I'm coach Warren your with Ridgeview High School, Columbia,
- 1:17SC and it's it's just a pleasure to be here in the the cathedral.
- 1:23They would feel here in Eugene. Is this your first time here?
- 1:27So this is actually my second. So yeah, man, you know, my
- 1:30partner and I, man, we, we came here the first year that they
- 1:33held Nashville's here back then during the COVID.
- 1:35Year. Yeah, you know.
- 1:36So that was an experience of its own.
- 1:39So that would have been like its first year.
- 1:41Opening, opening. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:43Yeah, I was into involved. We did this facility and so I
- 1:45remember, you know, winning it right before COVID and then
- 1:48working on it all through COVID and just, you know, it was a
- 1:50tough project just because of the cathedral esque of it.
- 1:53But then you had a COVID restrictions and it just, it
- 1:56was, it was tough. But it was tough it.
- 1:57Seems like it turned out OK. It turned out OK for you, coach.
- 2:00You know, it actually turned out OK, you know, had a had a couple
- 2:02kids get on the podium that year, you know, you know, after
- 2:05some whirlwind of travel. So, you know, that's, that's
- 2:09starting to become a theme for for myself traveling out here.
- 2:12But you know, at the end of the day, man, it's always the best.
- 2:14So great, great segue to my question there, coach.
- 2:18You know, you're in Columbia, SC, the beautiful place.
- 2:20That's actually where I did my very first USATF level 1 was at
- 2:24South Carolina. So a fond memories of it because
- 2:27I'm a huge coach and Ed guy. But you know, on this weekend or
- 2:30near this weekend, we have two other track meets that are going
- 2:32on for high school championships and we won't.
- 2:34I don't even entertain the argument about why there are so
- 2:37many high school national championships.
- 2:39When people ask that question, I think it's kind of a silly
- 2:42question. So I don't even entertain the
- 2:43the argument. You have choice.
- 2:45This is what my real what I'm getting at here.
- 2:47Why do all the way? You mentioned cathedral, I get
- 2:50that. But why come here to Hayward
- 2:52Field? Yeah.
- 2:53I think for the most part, this is the experience of allowing
- 2:57our athletes, that, one, have probably never traveled to the
- 3:00West Coast, you know what I'm saying, to be able to kind of
- 3:02see what, you know, the country looks like on the other side of
- 3:06town, right? And then two, you know, a lot of
- 3:09these athletes of ours, we run well in the state, you know, we
- 3:12run well within the borders of, of where we are.
- 3:16But, you know, it's, it's different when you get to
- 3:18compete against key people from, you know, Texas and California
- 3:22and kind of see what it's like to run Nashville, you know, and
- 3:26who knows whether or not they're going to continue their their
- 3:29athletic ability in college and if they even get here for, you
- 3:33know, the college nationals. So to be able to be able to
- 3:36utilize this facility, run on it and kind of see the the
- 3:39insurance and outs as a high schooler, you know you can, you
- 3:42can't be that. That's a really good point
- 3:44actually, when you were saying that I was thinking about good
- 3:46friend of mine is Justin Gatlin and he's got a great podcast.
- 3:49If you don't listen to Ready Set Go, you've got to listen to with
- 3:51them and the bearded wonder they do.
- 3:52You're kind of becoming a little bearded, Hey?
- 3:54You know, I'm, I'm, I'm taking my music coach.
- 3:56You know recipes coach. False.
- 3:58But please go check that podcast out as well.
- 4:01Justin talks a lot about, you know, the difference between
- 4:04when you're in college, when you go Pro is the travel and new
- 4:06food, you know, going over to Japan and China and all those
- 4:09kind of things. Yeah, well, this is kind of a
- 4:11mini version. While, you know, the food is
- 4:13going to be the same, you know, Air Force there, obviously, but
- 4:16you know, the time zones. That's yes, you know, we
- 4:19struggle as adults with time. Yeah.
- 4:21You know, different time schedules because this is a
- 4:24longer me because you have so many kids.
- 4:25So this is a what a great experience for your kids if you
- 4:27do go to college and you know somebody may one day go onto the
- 4:30circuit. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:31You know, one of our things with with our program is, is trust in
- 4:34the process, right. And I think one thing.
- 4:38That says that from you guys most.
- 4:40Definitely, you know, and I think for for us, Charles and I,
- 4:44we want to give our kids the experience where if, if you want
- 4:46to go collegiately, right, we'll tap you in.
- 4:49We, we won't take you to the ceiling, but we'll kind of give
- 4:52you kind of an insight of what it might look like to run at
- 4:55that level, right? You know, understanding how to
- 4:57take care of yourself, getting the rest, you know, so making
- 5:00sure you're getting the nutrition in right, right,
- 5:02understanding and and seeing how it is to warm up and compete
- 5:05against, you know, some of these great athletes, talk to them
- 5:08because a lot of these kids, if you're going to be running in
- 5:09college, you're going to be seeing them for the next three
- 5:11to four years, right, right. So intermingle, you know.
- 5:14That's cool, you know. Find some information man and.
- 5:16Keep rolling That's cool. I love that man.
- 5:18You know I I wasn't at a caliber in high school to you know, come
- 5:21to me like this, but to have the opportunity like maybe I would
- 5:24have been to that. Maybe I had more motivation.
- 5:25I don't know, right? That's pretty cool.
- 5:26Well, last question before I pass it on to someone, you know
- 5:30decently, I'm sure the last question is it's day three here
- 5:33in Eugene, OR what's what you got going on today?
- 5:35What are we running today? Yeah.
- 5:37So today we do have a 4 by 8 running in the championship
- 5:40division under the lights here, I think was 8:00, right?
- 5:45Yeah, yeah. And then tomorrow we do have our
- 5:48four by fours that'll be in the championship division.
- 5:51I think we're in the faster section in that as well.
- 5:53So you know, hopefully we can make some things shake.
- 5:55You know, right now these haven't gone as according to
- 5:58plan so. Just about that How many seniors
- 5:59are in those relays? So I believe I have two seniors.
- 6:03OK. All right.
- 6:04Over those relays. So man, look here, keep your
- 6:07fingers crossed. Well, or, you know, got to know
- 6:11you over the last couple years a lot.
- 6:12You know, again, This is why when people want a dog on social
- 6:16media and Twitter specifically and they say, oh, you know,
- 6:19something about a cesspool and all those kind of things, I
- 6:21think of guys like you. But I'm like, man, I don't know
- 6:23without Twitter if I would know you guys or know you as well or
- 6:26be able to communicate as much as we do and then coordinate
- 6:29with things. I, I just, that's, that's the
- 6:31positivity of social media. So I'm just so thankful for you
- 6:33and what you do, what you have been doing for your school, but
- 6:36also the whole statement. You're, you guys have expanded
- 6:39beyond just the school and are doing an amazing job.
- 6:42Really proud of you for what you're doing for track and
- 6:44field, specifically Interstate. So thanks for more.
- 6:46Appreciate you. Thank you We.
- 6:49We talked to relays, so let's do a relay handoff.
- 6:51I wish you guys could see is we have these ridiculous little
- 6:53microphones. I mean, it's kind of hilarious
- 6:56here, but that's what you got to do when you do this on the road.
- 6:59And we're proud. This is our first time we've
- 7:01done on the road interviews and such.
- 7:04And so we're really excited to be able to see coaches and talk
- 7:06to them right here at the Nike Outdoor National Championships.
- 7:09And we'll be doing this for other meets and maybe we're
- 7:12going to do something around track clinics and things like
- 7:13that. But just want to continue to
- 7:14expand the value that we bring through the podcast for you guys
- 7:18and gals that choose to listen to us.
- 7:19And we're just so humble that you do press play right here on
- 7:22the Guild Connections podcast. OK, that was first leg.
- 7:26Let's go to our second leg. Coach, introduce yourself.
- 7:28And, you know, I think we know where you're from because we're
- 7:31team. Yeah, hey, what's going on?
- 7:32Everybody is Coach Charles Proctor, CP as as most of y'all
- 7:37know, me. I'm the I'm the boys head track
- 7:38coach every high school in Columbia, SC.
- 7:40Hey, and real quick, I just thought about this because I
- 7:43always like to, you know, you guys know me well enough like to
- 7:45expand networks and expand my network.
- 7:47Hand it back to Warren real quick.
- 7:48Warren, why don't you tell us what your Twitter handle is for
- 7:50those guys and gals that are on Twitter.
- 7:52You don't know it by heart. I don't it's easy, it's my name.
- 7:55So but I just want to make sure that as they're looking here on
- 7:58their Twitter handles. If you are on Twitter and you
- 8:00like to engage in positive conversations, challenging
- 8:03conversations, but want to have a network of people around you
- 8:07specifically on Twitter that are there to help you and be helped.
- 8:11These these are two guys you need to to be following.
- 8:13So what's your handle? There.
- 8:15Oh yeah, I just had to make sure I I did get it right, but it's
- 8:17WT you're my last name, so WTEURE.
- 8:21Right. Perfect.
- 8:22I love it. Sweet and simple.
- 8:23Man, there's so many tough ones. Yeah, that was taken man.
- 8:30So mine is coach CP5, the number 5 coach CP 5 so.
- 8:35Whenever someone adds a number, I always have to ask what's the.
- 8:39Significance, that's just my favorite number, man, it's
- 8:40always been my favorite number growing up.
- 8:42So when CP was taken, coach CP was taken.
- 8:46So let me add the five on there. So that's what that's what we
- 8:49got that one that. In my birth year, which is not a
- 8:54smart thing to put on your thing.
- 8:56That's actually what it is on Instagram 1920 in 1976.
- 8:59But I was doing a lot of advertising with Twitter back in
- 9:01the day and I actually had an account manager pre Musk and all
- 9:05that stuff. And so one day I'm talking with
- 9:07my account manager, you know, we're setting up the next
- 9:09campaign and all that. And I was like, I got a crazy
- 9:11question. I go, I looked, you know,
- 9:13somebody has, you know, at Mike Cunningham, but they haven't
- 9:15tweeted like in five years. Like it's, it's an active.
- 9:18Is there ever like, do you guys kick people off or, you know, or
- 9:21whatnot? Yeah, you're all good.
- 9:27All good, brother, all good. We've got coaches everywhere.
- 9:29I love it. And so I asked her.
- 9:32I was like, you know, do you guys ever kick people off for
- 9:34being an active and things like that?
- 9:35And she goes, oh, let me look into it.
- 9:36And I literally just like the next day he logged back in and I
- 9:39was at Mike Gunning. That's how I'm talking about.
- 9:41You know there's some dude that they're going to look up, right?
- 9:43Right. Six years.
- 9:45Now you want to start doing it, Man get out of here, man, get
- 9:48out of here. I've never heard actually I had
- 9:50another Mike coming here reach out and say pay you for it and I
- 9:53was like bro unless you can offer like a million there ain't
- 9:56nothing I give up for my own mate like.
- 10:05Alright, well, let's bump all that social media stuff.
- 10:07Charles, what are you doing here, man?
- 10:09You're out here on the West Coast.
- 10:11We've got a little insight from Warren here.
- 10:13How are things going? And have you had Track Town
- 10:15Pizza? That's always one question.
- 10:16I have not. The entire staff did and the I
- 10:19think all the kids did. Dude, where were you?
- 10:22Why didn't you get any? Good question.
- 10:24I honestly don't know what I can't even look.
- 10:27But that was after probably one of the craziest travel days so
- 10:32I'm working on things. I can't even tell you what I ate
- 10:34that night, but I just see everybody coming back with
- 10:37pizza. I'm like, OK, I didn't get the
- 10:38damn home memo, all right? I got left out.
- 10:40That's cool. So you're in Columbia.
- 10:42So it's very similar to me, right?
- 10:44I live in a college town, Champaign, IL.
- 10:46So you know, you can either drive to a big airport or go
- 10:48from a small airport to a big one.
- 10:50I just, I do that. I do the small to a big and then
- 10:52come out. How do you guys like?
- 10:53That and so we, we've done all of the above.
- 10:56So, but this this time around, we we flew out of Charlotte.
- 10:59OK. And Charlotte's about an hour
- 11:02and 2020 minutes away from the crib.
- 11:04Yeah, so. Wasn't bad at all, but we ran
- 11:07into, of course, you know, the storms was happening, so we ran
- 11:09into delays and then Dallas, no. So we went Charlotte to JFK.
- 11:16So Charlotte to New York. Yeah, first of all, you never go
- 11:19through any new. York Airport Ever, La Guardia
- 11:21and. JFK are top two worst.
- 11:24Lots of great things. To not go through, and I am
- 11:27sorry for all my New Yorkers before those airports are the
- 11:31worst, but yeah, so, so actually.
- 11:34Once we. Missed the first one our our
- 11:36flight path path just got crazy. So we went from of course we
- 11:40drove from Columbia to Charlotte.
- 11:41We're supposed to have a six. AM flight.
- 11:43Yep. And so we go from Charlotte to
- 11:45JFK, from JFK to Seattle, from Seattle, from Seattle to
- 11:50Portland, and then we drove from Portland.
- 11:54Oh yeah. So by the time.
- 11:55Look. So when I tell you, I can't tell
- 11:57you how I missed Tracktown Pizza, but I can tell you how I
- 12:00missed Track because, like, I was out of it, man.
- 12:03My time we got here, but I was out of it doing the travel.
- 12:09Yeah. So that we had everybody, the
- 12:10kids, the staff. So we were traveling with, what,
- 12:1326 people? You know.
- 12:15And so we were catching. We were like, we were catching,
- 12:17still trying to get flights. I had a bad one going to Denver
- 12:21to go down to Pueblo for the D2 this year, and it's the same
- 12:24thing. You know, my flight from, I
- 12:26think Dallas to Denver didn't take off till 1:30 in the
- 12:28morning and all that kind of stuff.
- 12:30But then I think, yeah, but it was just me.
- 12:32When you're responsible for 20 something young people, I mean,
- 12:35that's AI did that when I coach, you know, I remember from
- 12:37Mississippi State, went to Penn Real.
- 12:38I remember missing flights and we had to split the group up to
- 12:42get on. I was like, yeah.
- 12:44We had to split into. Four different groups.
- 12:45Oh yeah. With so four different flight
- 12:47paths. Yeah.
- 12:49It got. It got wild, man.
- 12:50It got wild. That's where when I talk about,
- 12:53you know, what coaches do and you know, you guys know me well
- 12:55enough, I don't say that and mean like, oh man, you're such a
- 12:58good hurdles coach. Oh man, you're such a good
- 13:00Sprint coach. What's important, you know you
- 13:02have to go to the coach, right? But it's all the other stuff.
- 13:05It's the culture stuff. It's the leading by example
- 13:09stuff. It's the in the heat of the
- 13:10moment trying to figure out, OK, this group needs to go here.
- 13:12This group needs to go here. I need to make sure this group.
- 13:14Right, right. That other stuff, which is 80%
- 13:17of the the profession that I'm just like, oh man, thank God you
- 13:22guys are doing this. I tell, I tell the young coaches
- 13:24all the time. I said the actual coaching part
- 13:28is the least amount of the work that you do within the coaching
- 13:31job. I said if that's all you think
- 13:33you're about to do, but you are not going to survive in this
- 13:35business loan. We, the themes come up during
- 13:40the podcast from interview to interview.
- 13:41And one of the things that we've been exploring more and more
- 13:43lately is, has been that that the X's and O's.
- 13:46That might be the easy part, yes.
- 13:47And then all the other stuff, which is hard to like I'm trying
- 13:49to find a word to describe all the other stuff.
- 13:52So I just we call it the, it's called the 8020.
- 13:53All the 80 percent, 20% is the X's and O's, right?
- 13:5680% of it is discipline, leadership, recruiting, uniform.
- 14:01I mean, you know, there's a million things we could.
- 14:03List the 80% is the quickest way you get fired.
- 14:05Yeah, you better have an 80%. But I'm a great coach.
- 14:12Yeah, that's cool, man, that they're running fast.
- 14:14But you know what? They're not eligible and you
- 14:16never show up on the meets on time.
- 14:17Right, right. Exactly.
- 14:19Exactly. Well, let's talk about here in
- 14:21Oregon. And of course, as we've been
- 14:23talking, it's started to rain again here a little bit.
- 14:25Hopefully it doesn't get as as bad.
- 14:27We had a few downpours yesterday, I was saying on the
- 14:30podcast yesterday, but that did not stop the athletes out there.
- 14:33Oh no, not at all. Not at all.
- 14:34What are you looking forward to You?
- 14:36You mentioned actually one of the things I want to talk about.
- 14:38You mentioned 4 by 8 tonight and I think it should have been
- 14:41around 8:00 tonight. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:43So, so Warren, so Warren's girls have the four by 8:00 tonight.
- 14:46So, so far today, we've had two in the emerging elite hurdles.
- 14:51We have two in the emerging elite triple jump.
- 14:55I have one in the Championship 400 and we have one in the
- 15:01Emerging League jab tonight as well, so.
- 15:04You brought a lot of kids out here.
- 15:07Yeah, we we've been competing every day.
- 15:09So we had the middle schoolers in the freshman role Thursday.
- 15:12We had our Sprint meds role yesterday.
- 15:13Of course, just just told you about the long day we have today
- 15:17and tomorrow looks like I'll be pulling off 4 by 4 and off of
- 15:21some injuries we've had. So, you know, won't be doing a 4
- 15:24by 4. But yeah, we we were coming into
- 15:26the 4 by 4 yet tomorrow we were in the fast heat.
- 15:28So, you know, it's been a great season, though it's June. 21
- 15:31When was your state? Meet Marks, I mean.
- 15:34I'm sorry, May. May. 17th That is what is
- 15:37amazing to me. When I see these kids out here
- 15:38performing and PR ING or hitting near PRS, it's like man, oh they
- 15:42shot. They shot a kid.
- 15:43Oh, that ain't no that's never good.
- 15:45Now the. These kids have had their
- 15:47ultimate means six weeks ago, correct?
- 15:50They're still getting it done. That's a real testament to what
- 15:53you guys are out here doing. So last question then.
- 15:58I want to plug something for you guys because I love what you and
- 16:00your wife are doing. OK.
- 16:01The last question is not counting any events that your
- 16:05kids are in, what event are you most looking forward to?
- 16:08Or maybe it's already happened? Is there any event you're like
- 16:12oh see I heard. About this kid from as a as a
- 16:14Sprint guy myself, it's, it's the 100 I need.
- 16:17I need Maurice and Tate and Braden to make it to the final
- 16:21healthy and I need this rain to slow down just a little bit so,
- 16:25so we can see the fireworks that the entire countries wants to
- 16:28see those those kids have been phenomenal.
- 16:30Shout out to them and their coaches and I I'm ready to see
- 16:34those 3 lock horns and put together some fat.
- 16:37I mean, at the cathedral, one of the fastest tracks in the world,
- 16:42with three of the fastest U 20s in the world.
- 16:46Oh man, you know it doesn't get any better than that, man.
- 16:49That whole 6:00 to 8:00 tonight block is filled with it.
- 16:52So you have the 100m square, the 110 finals.
- 16:54I think during that time, Jackson Cantwell, the number one
- 16:56shot putter who just signed with University of Miami for football
- 16:59on track, he's throwing a shot put.
- 17:01And the young lady from Utah who just set the high school, I
- 17:06might be getting this wrong, but said the high school 5K national
- 17:09run, she's now like number on the on the mile.
- 17:13I think she's number 8 or 9 or 10 on the total US list.
- 17:16That's a high score. That's great.
- 17:18And so they're doing a fast. Anyway, she's in 3000 so that 6
- 17:22to 8 window is hot baby. Oh, yeah.
- 17:24Look here. Yeah, we'll be.
- 17:26Please don't be right here. Give me some hot weather.
- 17:28I got I got a brand new poncho. They got me the wrong size.
- 17:31I think they got me a medium set of a small.
- 17:33It's hanging out of my I will be here in my poncho fucking it
- 17:39through the rain. Baby, I'm here.
- 17:40Right. Last thing here, I want you to
- 17:42plug and tell us about this clinic that you do in December,
- 17:46that you guys are doing that, you know, a huge coaching
- 17:49education time. Coaches are putting together
- 17:52their own clinics and inviting people, put people on stage and
- 17:55put people in the seats to learn from those men and women.
- 17:57I'm just a big fan and what I love about you guys is you're
- 18:00not just focused on, okay, well here's a great hurdles coach to
- 18:04talk about hurdles, here's a great distance.
- 18:05You're talking about mental side and health like you're doing
- 18:08most. Tell us about that and maybe
- 18:10where people can go to find more information for the 2025
- 18:13version. Most definitely yes.
- 18:14So, so my wife and I have a foundation called the Coast
- 18:17Proctor Foundation. And through that we coaching
- 18:20education is one of the big things that that we focus on
- 18:23through that through our foundation.
- 18:25You can find all the information through there for that
- 18:27foundation at the Coach Proctor foundation.com.
- 18:30All right. But so we have the Coach
- 18:32Proctors Foundation clinic in December.
- 18:35We, this was our second year doing it and, and yes, every
- 18:39year we focus on every single event group.
- 18:42So you're going to have your sprints, your.
- 18:43Hurdles. Your distance, your throws.
- 18:46We don't do race walk for all of our AAU people out there.
- 18:48So sorry, sorry to hurt your feelings on that, but we are we,
- 18:51we bring in mental performance coaches.
- 18:54We bring in dietary dietary coaches as well.
- 18:58And we, we just, we have a sitting down.
- 19:01We, we, we came together and we figured out we have an extensive
- 19:04Rolodex of coaches that we can call on at a drop of a dime and
- 19:08get help. And, you know, everybody and
- 19:10everybody in this coaching profession doesn't have that
- 19:13luxury. And So what we wanted to do was
- 19:15unfold our Rolodex to anybody who was willing to listen and be
- 19:19a part of it. And so we bring in coaches that
- 19:22we have a relationship with, whether it's college or whether
- 19:24it's college or high school. And they come down and they
- 19:27present on their expertise and you know, they, they're, they're
- 19:31giving out for free. But most people have to, I mean,
- 19:35not for free. Of course you got to pay for the
- 19:36clinic. But you know, most of the times
- 19:38you got to pay online to get their courses and everything in
- 19:41the same courses. They might have to pay online.
- 19:43You come to the clinic and you're going to get that.
- 19:45But not only that, now, once you leave, now you extend, you've
- 19:47expanded your Rolodex because now you have the contact
- 19:50information of all the percenters, but you also have
- 19:52the contact information from all of the, all of the coaches that
- 19:56were, that were in attendance. And one thing that I liked about
- 19:59it. As far as South Carolina high
- 20:02school coaches is is concerned, in the last two years, all of
- 20:07the state champions between 2A3A4A or 5A have been involved
- 20:13in this claim. Either they were a presenter or
- 20:16they were in attendance and so you know.
- 20:19Interesting how that works. Out Hey I'm.
- 20:20I'm just saying. If if you like winning, you
- 20:22might want to come here because you know it's it's definitely
- 20:25been a good omen for for the coaches.
- 20:28For all you coaches 35 and under a rolodex you could think.
- 20:31Of. That as your contact list in
- 20:34your phone that's you know, another Rolodex y'all go is that
- 20:37a new thing that Gil's selling an attractive noto that's your
- 20:41your contact list on your phone. So go to the Coach Proctor.
- 20:44Gcoachproctorfoundation.com. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:47Check it out. You do it in December.
- 20:49Yes, we. We do it in December and we we
- 20:53try, we try to make sure we're not conflicting with with the
- 20:55National Convention because you Mike, I see you there.
- 20:57I see you there last 2-3 years that me and Warren have lost.
- 21:00So we try to make sure we don't conflict with there so that the
- 21:03presenting collegiate coaches can do both as well.
- 21:05You guys do a great job. Appreciate that Warren, thank
- 21:07you so much for being here this day.
- 21:08Good luck. We're going to be praying and
- 21:10hope we're going to be doing the the non rain dance, whatever the
- 21:13opposite of the rain dance, right under the opposite of
- 21:15that. But no matter what, I know you
- 21:17guys have your kids prepared. They're going to be to the best
- 21:18of their ability no matter what. Oh, most definitely.
- 21:21Thank you, guys. Hey, my man.
- 21:22Thank you, Mike. All right, let's keep it going
- 21:25here with our next interview. Coach wants you to introduce
- 21:27yourself and where you coming. From absolutely yeah.
- 21:29My name is Marlon Hargrove with JL flight crew out of Houston,
- 21:32TX. You know, I don't think we've
- 21:34met anybody from Oregon. I just thought about that
- 21:35because I'm like where you from? I was like, what, You're from
- 21:37Oregon, but. No one to Morgan.
- 21:39Right. Yeah, Yeah, a bunch of Texas.
- 21:40Texas is definitely representing out here.
- 21:43Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely.
- 21:45So it's really exciting to see some of the athletes that we've
- 21:48seen at some of the meats that we go to and whatnot.
- 21:50So it's really exciting to cheer them on as well.
- 21:53Yeah. So, you know, I'm always
- 21:54fascinated because you have this.
- 21:56Obviously, this is a great meet here, you know, Nike Town USA,
- 21:59if you will, track Town USA here at University of Oregon, Hayward
- 22:01Field. But there's choices.
- 22:03There's there's other meats and things that are going on as
- 22:06well. Why from Houston come all the
- 22:07way up here to Eugene. Oregon.
- 22:09Well, it's a very good question. I've got a couple of athletes
- 22:11that's going to be competing out here.
- 22:13It's my first time actually coming out to Eugene as well as
- 22:15to Track Town USA. So it's really exciting to be
- 22:18able to come out here and kind of be with them as they compete
- 22:21later on today, yeah. And then maybe you had another
- 22:23incentive as well. I think you got a a little one
- 22:26that's a big Oregon Duck fan. Yeah, my, my, my, my.
- 22:30Son Marlon Junior, he is an extremely huge Oregon Duck fan,
- 22:34so I had to bring him out here with me so he can kind of see
- 22:36the facility, see the campus and all that kind of great stuff.
- 22:38So I've got to ask, though, you know, you're in Houston, you're
- 22:42in Texas. How does 1 become an Oregon fan
- 22:45all the way down there? Well.
- 22:47I'll tell you what, I'm going to let him answer that.
- 22:48So why don't you tell us why you're an Oregon fan?
- 22:51I'm an Oregon fan because I just see they just play good baseball
- 22:55and football. So I just say, oh, I'm that I
- 22:58might go over there. They might, they might recruit
- 23:01me and stuff like that. But like why, why I like Oregon?
- 23:05It's because I had a football team that was the Ducks and I
- 23:08and, and I specifically saw their highlights for I can get
- 23:12better on the. Football at that, kind of.
- 23:15Cool. Did you pay attention to them
- 23:16this football year and and how good they did?
- 23:18Yes, Sir. What was the There was a
- 23:20receiver. They had Tess Johnson, I think
- 23:22it was name Ortez. You remember him?
- 23:24Yes, Sir. So I went to the number one
- 23:28greatest university in the world, Troy University down in
- 23:30Alabama. And Tess actually started at
- 23:32Troy. So I was a big organ and Tess
- 23:34fan because he was a Trojan first.
- 23:36So wow, I was watching him just when you were watching him, I
- 23:39was watching him too, rooting him on.
- 23:41Well, I'm glad you're here, man. There's a cool town, cool
- 23:44college here and you have no doubts with their tour, you know
- 23:47somewhere else you're going to go to school and do big things.
- 23:49Whether it's baseball or something else, you're going to
- 23:51do a lot of great things. So coach, what do you got going
- 23:55on? You brought some kids up here.
- 23:56What events are we looking at? What's already been done and
- 23:58what's to continue? With well we're looking at going
- 24:01to be looking at triple jump, championship level, triple jump
- 24:04later. Coach Mia Maxwell, one of the
- 24:07Maxwell twins there as well as tomorrow, pretty good.
- 24:13They're really, really good. I love what they do.
- 24:15I love their passion. As well.
- 24:17As well as her sister Mia, Mariah will be doing long jump
- 24:20on tomorrow as well as we'll have Sydney Sims from Elkins
- 24:23High School we'll be competing in long jump tomorrow as well.
- 24:29Well, the twins are going into their 12th year there as well as
- 24:32Sydney also will be going into our 12th.
- 24:34Year. This year, yes, yes.
- 24:48Really excited about that as well as got I got a few others
- 24:51just coming, some freshmen, some sophomores coming.
- 24:53So I really love getting the the athletes at that stage so we can
- 24:56really focus on the development and the technique and all that
- 24:59kind of great stuff. So it's really good tell.
- 25:01Me the name of the. Club again JL flight crew.
- 25:06Yeah, Yeah. Well.
- 25:09Well, you know, it's, it's a really funny story.
- 25:11Before I just became jail flight crew, I used to be with GH ready
- 25:17Houston Track Club, same 1 I believe you've talked to Danny
- 25:20McRae with. And before our throwing coach
- 25:24used to call my jumpers, the GH flight crew And then on my hand
- 25:28on my it was Twitter, now X now it used to be jump life coach.
- 25:32So I just put the JL and flight crew and put it together.
- 25:34That's kind of how I came about. Yeah.
- 25:35It's fascinating to me. Help people come up with their
- 25:38club names and you know someone see you know, they're like fast
- 25:40feet and like it's kind of boring.
- 25:42I like JLS and some of the other.
- 25:44Ones that exactly, exactly. I mean the jump life comes from
- 25:47not just a jumping coach, but I try to also think about life
- 25:50things with athletes as well too.
- 25:51Sometimes everything is not about just the athlete part,
- 25:54it's mental as well too. So I want to see them.
- 25:55Succeed in everything, So absolutely.
- 26:01Absolutely. Well, it's cool.
- 26:03We'll be rooting for you. It's cool with their juniors, so
- 26:05we'll see you here next year. Absolutely.
- 26:07We can go ahead and book it. I appreciate.
- 26:09It I don't even know if you noticed you did that.
- 26:11It's like unconscious. You should get like Yep, see you
- 26:13next year. Exactly.
- 26:14Well, thanks for being here. Thanks for being with us here
- 26:16today as well. You are officially our youngest
- 26:18person we've ever had on the podcast.
- 26:20That's right. You can put that in your Twitter
- 26:22and you better not have Twitter. All right, guys, thanks for
- 26:24being here today. We'll get ready for our next
- 26:26interview. All right, As we stay dry out
- 26:30here in Eugene, OR, we've got our next interview.
- 26:32Coach want you introduce yourself.
- 26:34And my name is Kendrick Seeley and they head cross country
- 26:37coach and track coach for. Homestead High.
- 26:39School located in in Cupertino. California.
- 26:44Which is very close to the Apple Corporation company.
- 26:48Yeah. You're telling me you're like a
- 26:49mile when you started out saying, yeah, we're a mile.
- 26:51It's like, well, if you start with a mile, it's automatically
- 26:53you're super close to Apple's campus out there.
- 26:56Yeah, exactly. Yeah, we can literally run from
- 27:00school right to the campus if you want, and turn around and
- 27:02come back. Yeah.
- 27:04Are there any advantages or disadvantages to that?
- 27:06Like I'm just thinking like traffic or sponsorship or
- 27:10internship. I don't know.
- 27:11Is there any advantages or disadvantages to being so close
- 27:14to a company as big as Apple? I mean, the pluses is that we,
- 27:19we get a lot of people coming from all walks of you know, of
- 27:25company countries and coming in. And the upside to that is that
- 27:31they spend a lot of money. Cost of living in that region
- 27:35could be very expensive, but what it does, it keeps the cost
- 27:41of housing and certain things at a high level where in regards to
- 27:50you know, getting a good, I guess a good response for your
- 27:54money becomes very critical does.
- 27:58That you mentioned about the people coming into work, which I
- 28:00didn't even think about. So do you have a pretty cultural
- 28:06like I'm thinking like a lot of different kids at your school,
- 28:09like from different? Countries, yeah.
- 28:10So, yeah. So I don't know.
- 28:12So, so in our school district we have 5 different schools and
- 28:17Homestead and all the fibre them Homestead is one of the most
- 28:21diverse. So we have we have a straight
- 28:24across the board. We got, we obviously got a high
- 28:25population of Asians, then we got Indians and then we got
- 28:30Caucasians. We got some Hispanics and then
- 28:33we got, you know, small, you know, small population of, you
- 28:37know, of African Americans. That's.
- 28:39Really cool. Well, what brings you up here to
- 28:42Eugene OR why? You know, you've got choices.
- 28:43And I know this one maybe is a little closer on the West Coast
- 28:46here, but why here in Hayward Field?
- 28:49Because of the appeal, the allure.
- 28:51I mean, obviously, you know, we always hear the story about
- 28:55Hayward magic and definitely there's something to that.
- 28:59And then couple of that too, we also, we have, I have, I bought
- 29:035 athletes here for, you know, to run in, you know, middle
- 29:08school and high school. And it's, you know, so far it
- 29:12has gone well. We all middle school kid so far
- 29:16he has set some high standards for our county, for California
- 29:20and then also in the USA. He's he's inside the top ten As
- 29:26for this for miles right now. So it's been a, you know, this
- 29:30is our third run at it and we really like it.
- 29:34Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating.
- 29:37And, you know, if you're a distance runner, you know,
- 29:39distance runners are pretty tough.
- 29:41But, you know, I guess the comfort of coming to attract me
- 29:46becomes a lot more difficult because it's raining all the
- 29:48time. Yeah.
- 29:49Yeah, these are what we call character building.
- 29:52Yes, yeah, it's a test. Survive here.
- 29:53You're going to survive. Every track.
- 29:56Yes, there's a test. Yeah, definitely there's a test.
- 29:58Your medal and and you know make you appreciate whatever you know
- 30:03from other places. You know, no complaining when
- 30:06it's 70° now. No, you did a lot less than
- 30:08that. And rainy so yeah, but.
- 30:11Definitely put things in perspective then, but it comes
- 30:15to track and field, you know? Yeah, well, you know the.
- 30:18Backbone of our company and for me personally, as well as track
- 30:21coaches, man. So we're just so glad, so
- 30:23honored that you would do what you do, that you chose to be a
- 30:26track coach. We're just so grateful and so
- 30:27thankful for what you do and so glad you brought kids up here to
- 30:30Eugene. You're giving them a great
- 30:31experience. So we're it's really cool to
- 30:33kind of watching the sidelines. Yeah, I appreciate that too.
- 30:36Yeah, it's, yeah. I mean, track, track and feel.
- 30:39It's, you know, it's world renown and it's, you know, it's
- 30:43a, it's a great neighborhood to hang out in.
- 30:46You know, everybody's friendly, you know, everybody wants, you
- 30:50know, all the kids to perform at a high level.
- 30:53Even the ones that have disappointment, you know,
- 30:55there's always someone they're trying to uplift them.
- 30:59So it's definitely a great atmosphere to be in and very
- 31:02glad that, you know, we were able to come here again and for
- 31:06taking this great atmosphere and hopefully I'll see tomorrow the
- 31:10weather the. Weather's.
- 31:11Supposed to be a little much better.
- 31:13So we thank God for that. But, you know, we'll keep coming
- 31:17out here as long as we, you know, we can see fit, see fit on
- 31:22doing that, yeah. A little bit.
- 31:24Well, thanks for. Joining us here today, man, I
- 31:26really appreciate it. Good guy.
- 31:27I appreciate joining you. And you know, this is this is
- 31:30what we look forward to every year.
- 31:32Yeah. Absolutely.
- 31:33Thank you. Thanks, coach.
- 31:34Bye. Bye.
- 31:35All right, that brings day three to a close.
- 31:39The weather didn't cooperate, but the coaches and athletes
- 31:42did, including a national record and I'm hearing an age group
- 31:47like 16 year old world record in the 800 meter dash for the boys.
- 31:52Cooper Luton House just continues to set a record.
- 31:55He set the high school national record last week with a 146.
- 31:59This the day he set it, reset it with a 145.
- 32:03Interestingly, we had Cooper's dad George on the podcast.
- 32:07You might want to go check out his episode because we talked
- 32:09about Cooper just a little bit in the background he has with
- 32:12his family. So thanks for joining us here on
- 32:13day three of the Nike Outdoor National Championships.
- 32:16We'll be back back for day four, praying for better weather and
- 32:20just awesome athletes and coaches.
- 32:21Talk to you guys soon. Thanks for being here.
