- 0:00Speaker 1: Das Christkinde. I had fed the fire and stirred it
- 0:04Speaker 1: till the sparkles in delight snapped their saucy little fingers
- 0:09Speaker 1: at the chill December night. And in dressing gown and slippers,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I had tilted back my throne, the old split bottomed rocker,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and was musing all alone. I could hear the hungry
- 0:25Speaker 1: winter prowling round the outer door, and the tread of
- 0:29Speaker 1: muffled footsteps on the white piazza floor. But the sounds
- 0:34Speaker 1: came to me only as the murmur of a stream
- 0:39Speaker 1: that mingled with the current of a lazy flowing dream,
- 0:44Speaker 1: like a fragrant incense rising curled, the smoke of my
- 0:48Speaker 1: cigar brushing with the lamplight, gleaming through it like a
- 0:53Speaker 1: mist and folded star. And as I gazed, the vapor
- 0:58Speaker 1: like a curtain, rolled away with a sound of bells
- 1:02Speaker 1: that tinkled, and the clatter of a sleigh. And in
- 1:06Speaker 1: a vision painted like a picture in the air, praying
- 1:11Speaker 1: a elfish figure of a man with frosty hair, efficiently
- 1:16Speaker 1: old man that chuckled with a laugh as he appeared,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and with ruddy cheeks like embers in the ashes of
- 1:24Speaker 1: his beard. He poised himself grotesquely in an attitude of
- 1:29Speaker 1: mirth on a damass covered hassock that was sitting on
- 1:34Speaker 1: the hearth, and at a magic signal of his stubby
- 1:37Speaker 1: little thumb antibodies changing to a bright proscenium, And looking there,
- 1:44Speaker 1: I marveled as I saw a mimic stage paramount defensive
- 1:50Speaker 1: adults of a very tender age, and some so very
- 1:55Speaker 1: tiny that they tottered as they walked congressional, and per
- 2:00Speaker 1: hurled and gurgled like the brooklets when they talked, And
- 2:04Speaker 1: their faces were like lilies, and their eyes like purest dew,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and their tresses like the shadows that the shine is
- 2:13Speaker 1: woven through. And they each had little burdens and a
- 2:17Speaker 1: little tale to tell, fairream of fairy lore and giants
- 2:22Speaker 1: and delights delectable. And they mixed and intermingled, weaving melody
- 2:28Speaker 1: with joy burned till the magic circle clustered round a
- 2:33Speaker 1: blooming baby boy, and they threw aside their treasures in
- 2:37Speaker 1: an ecstasy of glee, and bent with dazzled faces and
- 2:42Speaker 1: with parted lips to see twas a wondrous little fellow
- 2:47Speaker 1: with a dainty double chin and cheeks and dimples for
- 2:52Speaker 1: the smiles to blossom in. And he looked as ripe
- 2:56Speaker 1: and rosy on his bed of straw and reeds, as
- 3:00Speaker 1: a mellow little pippin that had tumbled in the weeds.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And I saw the happy mother and a group surrounding
- 3:07Speaker 1: her that knelt with costly presence of frankincense and mirr
- 3:13Speaker 1: As a murmur on the air CAMEO came drifting o'er
- 3:17Speaker 1: the hearing, in a melody of prayer. By the splendor
- 3:21Speaker 1: in the heavens, and the hush upon the sea printed
- 3:25Speaker 1: the majesty of silence reigning over Galilee. We feel thy
- 3:31Speaker 1: kingly presence, and we humbly bow the knee and lift
- 3:35Speaker 1: our hearts and voices in gratefulness to thee. Thy messenger
- 3:40Speaker 1: has spoken, and our doubts have fled and gone as
- 3:44Speaker 1: the dark and spectral shadows of the night before the dawn,
- 3:48Speaker 1: And in the kindly shelter of the light around us
- 3:51Speaker 1: drawn brightness, we would nestle down forever in the breast
- 3:56Speaker 1: we lean upon. You have given us a shepherd, you
- 4:00Speaker 1: have given us a guide. And the light of heaven
- 4:03Speaker 1: grew dimmer when you sent him from your side. But
- 4:07Speaker 1: he comes to lead thy children, where the gates will
- 4:10Speaker 1: open wide flight to welcome his returning. When his works
- 4:14Speaker 1: are glorified by the splendor in the heavens, and the
- 4:18Speaker 1: hush upon the sea, and the majesty of silence reigning
- 4:23Speaker 1: over galilee, we feel thy kingly presence, and we humbly
- 4:28Speaker 1: bow the knee and lift our hearts and voices in
- 4:31Speaker 1: gratefulness to thee. Then the vision, slowly failing with the
- 4:36Speaker 1: words of the refrain, expelled, swooning in the moonlight through
- 4:40Speaker 1: the frosty window pane, and I heard the clock proclaiming,
- 4:45Speaker 1: like an eager sentinel who brings the world good tidings.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It is Christmas. All is well,
