Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily here you are listening to five Minute
- 0:20Speaker 1: Friday on herdle. Don't you wear your cute little self?
- 0:24Speaker 1: This wasn't going anywhere. I am here checking in recording
- 0:29Speaker 1: this in Paris after a whirlwind. I was gonna say,
- 0:33Speaker 1: week has a been a week since I left my house.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I went to Stockholm for the high Rocks World Championships,
- 0:38Speaker 1: which I'm going to talk to you about in just
- 0:41Speaker 1: a second. Then my first ever trip to Copenhagen, which
- 0:44Speaker 1: was stunning. I get the hype now, and now I
- 0:48Speaker 1: am in Paris for the weekend. It is so lovely
- 0:53Speaker 1: to be here. Although it is very very warm, and
- 0:56Speaker 1: when I say very very warm, literally one hundred degrees,
- 0:59Speaker 1: it is an oven outside my window. I digress high
- 1:04Speaker 1: Rocks World Championships. I got so many dms chiming in
- 1:10Speaker 1: on high Rocks. I had the opportunity to go to
- 1:12Speaker 1: Stockholm as a guest of Red Bull to witness, watch
- 1:17Speaker 1: spectate my first ever high rocks competition, and what a
- 1:21Speaker 1: competition to spectate. First of all, thank you Red Bull
- 1:24Speaker 1: for the opportunity. I have so many takeaways on that,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and this is the point of today's episode.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So let's get right into it.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So High Rocks, as most of you know, is a
- 1:35Speaker 1: fitness phenomenon right now, so many people getting into it.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Many of them identify like I identify, which is as
- 1:44Speaker 1: a runner, and so I was super curious to see
- 1:48Speaker 1: what the hype was about. I have so many takeaways,
- 1:52Speaker 1: many of which I also highlight in the Weekly Hurdle.
- 1:55Speaker 1: It's a newsletter that comes up from the show every Friday,
- 1:58Speaker 1: so make sure to go check it out. But among
- 2:02Speaker 1: them is yes, high Rocks is a place where there
- 2:05Speaker 1: are many good looking.
- 2:06Speaker 2: People in one small area.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I made a joke on my close friend's story that
- 2:12Speaker 1: if I left Stockholm without a single number, then there's
- 2:16Speaker 1: probably no hope for me. I'm happy to report that
- 2:19Speaker 1: I did obtain a number.
- 2:22Speaker 2: More to come.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I don't think anything's actually gonna happen with that, but
- 2:25Speaker 1: I am proud of myself for putting myself out there.
- 2:28Speaker 1: So on the High Rocks front, during the high Rock competition,
- 2:32Speaker 1: you run eight kilometers at least. There is a transition
- 2:39Speaker 1: zone that they call the rock zone, and depending on
- 2:42Speaker 1: the layout of the course, which includes a slew of
- 2:46Speaker 1: different areas and zones, you might run more than an
- 2:51Speaker 1: eight k total. Those areas and zones, and this is
- 2:55Speaker 1: not in order, include the ski erg. You've got a
- 2:59Speaker 1: slight push, you've got a sled pull, You've got a row,
- 3:04Speaker 1: you have lunges with a sandbag on your shoulders, you
- 3:09Speaker 1: have a farmer's carry, and you have wall balls.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I think I named all of them.
- 3:16Speaker 1: This is like a quiz how much can you learn
- 3:18Speaker 1: in one weekend of spectating high rocks competition. They have singles,
- 3:22Speaker 1: they have doubles. They also had a relay at this event.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And I think that if I was going to do
- 3:27Speaker 1: high rocks, it definitely would do it in a double's capacity.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Working so hard as an individual for over an hour
- 3:36Speaker 1: just feel so exhausting. So at least if somebody else
- 3:39Speaker 1: is in on the fun with you, you can have
- 3:41Speaker 1: fun with them and pal around. The thing about high
- 3:47Speaker 1: rocks which I did not know, and there are many
- 3:50Speaker 1: of these things actually, but one of the things I
- 3:52Speaker 1: did not know was that if you're doing doubles, you
- 3:54Speaker 1: don't have to break up everything evenly. So if one
- 3:57Speaker 1: of the two of you has a certain thing that
- 3:59Speaker 1: you who are really skilled at, then you can kind
- 4:02Speaker 1: of own that category. I am friendly with Chandler Smith.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I met his wife Jesse over the weekend and I
- 4:10Speaker 1: watched as they competed on Sunday, and Chandler did the
- 4:14Speaker 1: entire row, for example, So just depends on how the
- 4:18Speaker 1: two of you decide to split it up. But that's
- 4:20Speaker 1: not something I knew before going to the competition. There
- 4:23Speaker 1: were other things that I learned at the competition. One,
- 4:26Speaker 1: since so many people are literally wearing as little clothing
- 4:30Speaker 1: as possible. I know, in New York, the event is
- 4:32Speaker 1: actually completely outside. This was in an arena in Stockholm.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But because you're not wearing kobious amounts of clothing if
- 4:39Speaker 1: you are a sponsored athlete, there are temporary tattoos everywhere.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And I found this to be so funny, and it's
- 4:45Speaker 1: something that I'm kind of surprised hasn't translated yet, and
- 4:49Speaker 1: I'm kind of crossing my fingers because I don't necessarily know.
- 4:53Speaker 2: If I wanted to.
- 4:53Speaker 1: But over to running, I feel like most people run
- 4:58Speaker 1: major races anyway, wearing a little.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Bit more clothing than I saw at High Rocks.
- 5:02Speaker 1: But yes, temporary tattoos absolutely everywhere. And the biggest takeaway
- 5:08Speaker 1: of all of this is if you are endurance focused,
- 5:11Speaker 1: within your training, you could be really good at a
- 5:14Speaker 1: high rocks and what I say by that, and someone
- 5:16Speaker 1: DM me and they were like, I'm high curious. Can
- 5:19Speaker 1: you please give me your takeaways next week on the show.
- 5:23Speaker 1: If you have an aerobic base, if you are someone
- 5:26Speaker 1: that is good on the run, then you are killing
- 5:30Speaker 1: a big part of the competition. The run takes up
- 5:35Speaker 1: a lot of time, and if it's something that's like
- 5:38Speaker 1: your last focus, if it's something that's not one of
- 5:40Speaker 1: your main modalities, then it's definitely.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Going to slow you down.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Whereas I think it's probably a little bit easier to
- 5:49Speaker 1: be a runner who works on developing strength to compete
- 5:53Speaker 1: well at a high ROX. I would think that if
- 5:55Speaker 1: you are a really heavy strength athlete like some of
- 5:58Speaker 1: the super big heavy squatting, heavy deadlift jerking CrossFit athletes,
- 6:08Speaker 1: that it's a lot harder to build up that running
- 6:11Speaker 1: endurance as a person that has more muscle mass like that.
- 6:14Speaker 2: That's my simple takeaway. Do with that what you will.
- 6:18Speaker 1: But I would say if you are looking for a
- 6:20Speaker 1: new way to challenge yourself as a runner and you're
- 6:22Speaker 1: hoping to do something a little bit different, something to
- 6:26Speaker 1: try something new, I really do think that a HIERROX
- 6:29Speaker 1: can be a really fun experience. Now, what I will
- 6:32Speaker 1: say is that I've heard it's quite hard to get
- 6:34Speaker 1: into them and that they sell out really quickly. So
- 6:38Speaker 1: I would do your research ahead of time and ask
- 6:40Speaker 1: yourself what is it that I want to get into,
- 6:42Speaker 1: Where is it that I'm hoping to compete, and make
- 6:44Speaker 1: sure you know when the sign up dates are so
- 6:46Speaker 1: that you can be quick on it like we were
- 6:48Speaker 1: ten years ago with.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Soul Cycle classes in New York City.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And then the other thing I will say is that
- 6:55Speaker 1: you have to just like when you're training for a marathon,
- 6:58Speaker 1: you have to be into the journey this rep choirs.
- 7:00Speaker 1: There are a lot of different things that are happening here.
- 7:03Speaker 1: There's a lot of different skills that you have to
- 7:05Speaker 1: work on, and although in every workout you're not going
- 7:07Speaker 1: to be doing the modalities that someone is doing during
- 7:10Speaker 1: a high ROX competition, you have to want to focus
- 7:13Speaker 1: on all of these different things and enjoy diversifying your training,
- 7:18Speaker 1: enjoy trying these new things. And I say that for
- 7:21Speaker 1: anyone who maybe is run minded. So the big question,
- 7:26Speaker 1: am I doing a high Rocks anytime soon? I'm definitely
- 7:28Speaker 1: not doing one until at least twenty twenty seven. I
- 7:30Speaker 1: could totally see it being on my list for them.
- 7:34Speaker 1: In the meantime, I am personally training for the Sydney
- 7:37Speaker 1: Marathon and focus on that, and then once this crazy
- 7:40Speaker 1: year of the Sydney Marathon and travel and getting through
- 7:45Speaker 1: the chaos is behind me, then I will start plotting
- 7:49Speaker 1: and planning where I may lace up for my first
- 7:52Speaker 1: High Rocks. I'm curious if you are High Rocks curious.
- 7:57Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week is what is it
- 7:59Speaker 1: about that intrigues you and what station do you think
- 8:03Speaker 1: that you'd be the best at? These are my problems
- 8:06Speaker 1: for you this week. I'm curious. Feel free to tag
- 8:08Speaker 1: me over on Instagram with your thoughts over at Emily
- 8:13Speaker 1: Boddy and at Hurdle Podcast and now a listener question.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Hey Emily, my name's Kayla.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Really love the show and excited for the new direction
- 8:22Speaker 1: for season twenty one. I see that you travel all
- 8:25Speaker 1: the time, and while I respect the hustle, I feel
- 8:27Speaker 1: like it must get really tiring to be out of
- 8:29Speaker 1: your routine. How do you manage to keep up with
- 8:32Speaker 1: the things that are important to you while being on
- 8:35Speaker 1: the road And do you have any tips to offer
- 8:37Speaker 1: for someone who's planning to be away from home for
- 8:39Speaker 1: two weeks in August. Thanks so much for everything you do, Kayla.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Kayla. Travel my main my main thing.
- 8:47Speaker 1: This is how someone like me that works different jobs
- 8:50Speaker 1: and hosts and whatnot makes some of her money. So yes,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I am constantly on the road and I'm constantly doing
- 8:55Speaker 1: research to set myself up for the most success possible.
- 9:00Speaker 2: This is what I know.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I know that I feel better when I have some
- 9:03Speaker 1: sort of a routine, and I also know that in
- 9:06Speaker 1: order to keep my routine, I have to think forward.
- 9:09Speaker 1: So for instance, today on Friday, when you're listening to this,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I know that I have a strength workout. I have
- 9:15Speaker 1: been coming to Paris for a few years now on
- 9:18Speaker 1: work travel and personal travel, and so I know a
- 9:21Speaker 1: couple of gyms that I can go to. I know
- 9:23Speaker 1: what I need to do to secure a day pass.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I know how to plan ahead, and so that is
- 9:28Speaker 1: what I'm doing to make sure that I can do
- 9:30Speaker 1: the workout that's on deck. If I'm going on a run,
- 9:32Speaker 1: I'm using Strava's Maps and Routes feature to look at
- 9:35Speaker 1: what my options are for the distance that I have
- 9:37Speaker 1: to cover if I'm trying to keep my mind a
- 9:39Speaker 1: head on straight. Journaling for me is important all the time,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but it's almost even more critical when I'm on the
- 9:45Speaker 1: move because often I'm spending a lot of time with myself.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So I think it's a really important opportunity for me
- 9:52Speaker 1: to check in. And then also it just helps me
- 9:55Speaker 1: have some sort of a routine even when there are
- 9:57Speaker 1: so many things beyond my control that are different than
- 10:00Speaker 1: my normal So it takes a lot of planning.
- 10:03Speaker 2: It definitely takes diligence. I am very proud of myself.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I've been really on my supplement game while traveling this trip,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and that also takes planning ahead and organizing before you leave.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I have to go creatine packets and elements and ag
- 10:17Speaker 1: one and I brought these amino acid pills. So yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 1: it just takes planning and where there's a why, there's
- 10:28Speaker 1: a way, right, So I know that again, this routine
- 10:31Speaker 1: makes me feel good. I'm dedicated to feeling the best
- 10:34Speaker 1: I can in my body and that's what I do.
- 10:37Speaker 2: That's how I do it. Going away for two weeks.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Again, the takeaway here is plan ahead, surround yourself with
- 10:44Speaker 1: people that support you doing the things.
- 10:46Speaker 2: That make you feel good.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And now this isn't me saying like if you're going
- 10:49Speaker 1: on a two week vacation that you need to be
- 10:51Speaker 1: diligent in your routine, Like that's that's silly for me.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Most of this is relevant to when I travel for work,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but also it just makes me personally feel like a
- 11:00Speaker 1: better person. Does that mean that I won't take off
- 11:03Speaker 1: if the circumstance calls were.
- 11:05Speaker 2: It, of course not.
- 11:06Speaker 1: You've got to live your life. You must live your life.
- 11:09Speaker 1: But to each her own. I hope this is helpful.
- 11:14Speaker 1: As always, if you have any more questions, if there's
- 11:16Speaker 1: anything I can do for you, you know how to
- 11:18Speaker 1: find me. You can hit me up over the dm
- 11:20Speaker 1: at Hurdle podcast at Emilybody and always over email at
- 11:24Speaker 1: Hello at hurdle dot us. Thanks so much to everyone
- 11:28Speaker 1: for all of your kind words on the new season.
