- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. It's Monday, it is the 19th of
- 0:16August and it's great to have your company.
- 0:19I hope you had a good weekend. I hope the week ahead looks full
- 0:22of good and exciting things, but wherever the week holds,
- 0:27wherever you'll spend it, with whomever you'll spend it right
- 0:31now, I appreciate what you've done because you have stopped
- 0:34your day and you have tapped on play.
- 0:37Maybe you haven't stopped your day.
- 0:38Maybe you are still in the thick of it, getting somewhere, doing
- 0:42something, going for a run. And thus is the beauty and the
- 0:46magic of podcasts. Whatever it is that you're
- 0:48doing, we get to do this together as you do that.
- 0:51Or you might be someone like me who doesn't multitask too
- 0:54effectively, so you do one thing at a time.
- 0:56In which case, welcome. Welcome to this moment of peace
- 1:01in your day as we are going to take the next step, listening to
- 1:05the next chapter as we hear Paul speaking about how he approaches
- 1:11his life of discipleship and it echoes through the millennia and
- 1:17lands here for us to hear. So let's read this together,
- 1:20shall we? As we crack open First
- 1:22Corinthians Chapter 9. Am I not as free as anyone else?
- 1:39Am I not an apostle? Haven't I seen Jesus our Lord
- 1:43with my own eyes? Isn't it because of my work that
- 1:47you belong to the Lord? Even if others think I'm not an
- 1:50apostle, I certainly am to you. You yourselves are proof that I
- 1:56am the Lord's apostle. This is my answer to those who
- 2:00question my authority. Don't we have the right to live
- 2:04in your homes and share your meals?
- 2:07Don't we have the right to bring a believing wife with us, as the
- 2:10other apostles and the Lord's brothers do and as Peter does?
- 2:15Or is it only Barnabas and I who have to work to support
- 2:18ourselves? What soldier has to pay his own
- 2:21expenses? What farmer plants a vineyard
- 2:25and doesn't have the right to eat some of its fruit?
- 2:28What shepherd cares for a flock of sheep and isn't allowed to
- 2:32drink some of the milk? Am I expressing merely a human
- 2:35opinion or does the Law say the same thing?
- 2:39For the Law of Moses says you must not muzzle an ox to keep it
- 2:43from eating as it treads out the grain.
- 2:46Was God thinking only about oxen when he said this?
- 2:50Wasn't he actually speaking to us?
- 2:53Yes, it was written for us, so that the one who ploughs and the
- 2:57one who threshes the grain might both expect a share of the
- 3:01harvest. Since we have planted spiritual
- 3:05seed among you, aren't we entitled to a harvest of
- 3:08physical food and drink? If you support others who preach
- 3:13to you, shouldn't we have an even greater right to be
- 3:16supported? But we have never used this
- 3:19right. We would rather put up with
- 3:22anything than be an obstacle to the good news about Christ.
- 3:26Don't you realise that those who work in the temple get their
- 3:30meals from the offerings brought to the temple, and those who
- 3:33serve at the altar get a share of the sacrificial offerings.
- 3:38In the same way, the Lord ordered that those who preach
- 3:42the good news should be supported by those who benefit
- 3:45from it. Yet I have never used any of
- 3:49these rights. And I'm not writing this to
- 3:52suggest that I want to start now.
- 3:55In fact, I would rather die than lose my right to boast about
- 3:59preaching without charge. Yet preaching the good news is
- 4:03not something I can boast about. I'm compelled by God to do it.
- 4:08How terrible for me if I didn't preach the good news.
- 4:12If I were doing this of my own initiative, I would deserve
- 4:16payment. But I have no choice, for God
- 4:19has given me this sacred trust. What then is my pay?
- 4:24It is the opportunity to preach the good news without charging
- 4:28anyone. That's why I never demand my
- 4:31rights when I preach the good news.
- 4:34Even though I am a free man with no master, I've become a slave
- 4:39to all people to bring many to Christ.
- 4:43When I was with the Jews, I lived like a Jew to bring the
- 4:47Jews to Christ. When I was with those who follow
- 4:51the Jewish law, I too lived under that law.
- 4:54Even though I'm not subject to the law, I did this so I could
- 4:58bring to Christ those who are under the law.
- 5:02When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law, I
- 5:06too live apart from the Law, so I can bring them to Christ.
- 5:10But I do not ignore the law of God.
- 5:13I obey the law of Christ. When I'm with those who are
- 5:18weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to
- 5:22Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground
- 5:26with everyone, doing everything I can to save some.
- 5:31I do everything to spread the good news and share in its
- 5:34blessings. Don't you realise that in a race
- 5:38everyone runs but only one person gets the prize?
- 5:42So run to win. All athletes are disciplined in
- 5:46their training. They do it to win a prize that
- 5:49will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.
- 5:54So I run with purpose in every step.
- 5:58I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an
- 6:02athlete, training it to do what it should.
- 6:06Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others, I myself
- 6:10might be disqualified. Ah, Jesus, what an immense
- 6:24privilege it is to live not only in the blessing of your love and
- 6:31your sanctification, but to be invited into your mission of
- 6:36sharing your good news with others.
- 6:39Lord, as we do that, just fill our hearts with the joy of being
- 6:45part of your mission. Your mission to every person of
- 6:49every size, shape, and posting in life.
- 6:54Lord, you want them all. You want them all to come into
- 6:56your Kingdom to help us be chameleons as we adapt to the
- 7:02world around us. We adapt to each one of these
- 7:04people's specific context so that we can share Your love and
- 7:09Your forgiveness in a way that resonates for them.
- 7:14We can only do that with Your wisdom Holy Spirit.
- 7:17So come transform our minds, enrich our hearts, and may Your
- 7:24words live upon our lips that we can share them.
- 7:28Share Your glorious words of love and inclusion and
- 7:33forgiveness with each person that we come into contact with.
- 7:38We love you and we are so grateful that you offer all
- 7:41these things to us as well. And we pray this all in your
- 7:45saving name, Jesus, Amen.
