Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hi, Emily, it's ken. I just want to say good
- 0:23Speaker 1: luck in the half tomorrow. I'll be reading for you.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I registered my ten year old in the kids race
- 0:30Speaker 2: for tomorrow, and we went out today to practice the
- 0:34Speaker 2: one point five k and as we rounded up this hill,
- 0:41Speaker 2: he turned to me and he said, I am strong,
- 0:44Speaker 2: I am capable. This run is going to be great,
- 0:49Speaker 2: and I was so happy. I wanted to share that
- 0:51Speaker 2: with you. I have a picture of you with that
- 0:55Speaker 2: mantra from one of your instagrams taped in my closet,
- 0:59Speaker 2: so I love that he conjured up his my mantra
- 1:03Speaker 2: from my closet for our hurdle moment together.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Like, honestly, how could I not start five Minute Friday
- 1:12Speaker 3: with that story.
- 1:13Speaker 4: I am sitting here in the AG studio in my feelings.
- 1:19Speaker 4: You all know who it is. It's Emily here, just.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Looking out my gloomy window, reflecting on a crazy week
- 1:26Speaker 3: and I am just having so many yeah, so many feelings.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I ran a half marathon last weekend. It was a
- 1:35Speaker 3: great time, and not just an actual great time and
- 1:40Speaker 3: that it's the fastest I've ever run a half marathon,
- 1:44Speaker 3: but it was a great time because I went into
- 1:49Speaker 3: last week weekend. I went into last weekend wanting to
- 1:56Speaker 3: have fun and focused on fun of time. Talked about
- 2:00Speaker 3: this briefly on the show before, but my biggest takeaway
- 2:04Speaker 3: from the New York Marathon last year was that I
- 2:09Speaker 3: wasn't in it for what felt like the right reasons
- 2:12Speaker 3: in the moment. In the moment, I was so wrapped
- 2:15Speaker 3: up in pace and worried about performance that I forgot
- 2:21Speaker 3: why it is that I toe the line in the
- 2:24Speaker 3: first place. I run because of the feeling that it
- 2:28Speaker 3: gives me, and because it's a reminder that I am capable,
- 2:31Speaker 3: and because of the community and so many things, and
- 2:35Speaker 3: because I wasn't focused on that stuff. I like, look
- 2:40Speaker 3: back on that experience and I'm proud of me. But
- 2:45Speaker 3: I learned because now that I know better, I can
- 2:48Speaker 3: do better. And so I went into what felt like
- 2:52Speaker 3: this fun opportunity last weekend with the mindset that fun
- 2:57Speaker 3: was priority number one. If quote unquote running fast wasn't fun,
- 3:04Speaker 3: then that's not what I wanted to do last Saturday.
- 3:07Speaker 3: What I wanted to do last Saturday, it was go
- 3:10Speaker 3: out and have a good time with my city. That's
- 3:14Speaker 3: what I wanted to do, and that's exactly what I did,
- 3:16Speaker 3: and it all paid off. I feel like I've been
- 3:19Speaker 3: rambling about this for three minutes and twenty seconds and
- 3:21Speaker 3: that's not actually what I came to talk to you
- 3:22Speaker 3: about today, So I digress five minute Friday here.
- 3:26Speaker 4: I am. What I actually really want to.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Wrap about here today is abundance and manifestation, and I
- 3:33Speaker 3: totally understand that this is one of those things that
- 3:36Speaker 3: can feel really fluofy.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I think that's a real word. I'm going to use
- 3:40Speaker 4: it here.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But lately, there are a lot of things that are
- 3:43Speaker 3: going on in my life that are beyond my control.
- 3:47Speaker 3: A prime example of this would be something like my
- 3:51Speaker 3: rent going up by an exorbitant amount of money.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Long sigh.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I am not leaving this apartment. I worked way too
- 3:59Speaker 3: hard to put together. I'm happy here, and so I
- 4:04Speaker 3: tried to counter the rent moment. It didn't work, And
- 4:07Speaker 3: now I am just accepting that this is something that's
- 4:10Speaker 3: happening in my life, and I am going to come
- 4:13Speaker 3: into a circumstance by doing the things that are within
- 4:17Speaker 3: my control to make this work for me. Sitting here
- 4:23Speaker 3: and worrying about the things that I can do absolutely
- 4:27Speaker 3: nothing about.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Does me no good.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And it was interesting, right because instead of sitting here
- 4:33Speaker 3: angry about the rent thing, it was as if magic
- 4:39Speaker 3: happened yesterday and opportunities that I didn't expect started to
- 4:44Speaker 3: come my way. And I'm not saying that I'm going
- 4:46Speaker 3: to sit down at my desk every day and there
- 4:48Speaker 3: are going to be like dollar signs in my inbox,
- 4:51Speaker 3: but it was one of those days where things just
- 4:54Speaker 3: kind of started rolling. Granted, for every like one of
- 4:58Speaker 3: those days, there's a zillion days that doesn't happen.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I feel the need to reiterate that again, But you
- 5:05Speaker 4: just got to trust.
- 5:06Speaker 3: So I continually ask myself, how can these situations that
- 5:12Speaker 3: are beyond my control?
- 5:13Speaker 4: How can I make them work for me?
- 5:16Speaker 3: Another really good example of where I had to come
- 5:20Speaker 3: into this mindset understanding that these things in my life
- 5:23Speaker 3: that might be difficult are happening to work in my favor.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I was trying to get a doctor's appointment last month,
- 5:30Speaker 3: and after finally securing one, the day of the appointment.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I got a call that the doctor had to cancel.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And oh my god, if you saw me sitting in
- 5:38Speaker 3: this exact spot when that happened, I was beside myself,
- 5:42Speaker 3: just in tears, so frustrated at the system and how
- 5:45Speaker 3: much money I pay for health insurance that feels like
- 5:47Speaker 3: it does.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Nothing for me.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And I was texting with someone and she asked me
- 5:54Speaker 3: that question, why do you think that maybe this is
- 5:56Speaker 3: happening for you in that moment? Well, in retrospect, now,
- 6:00Speaker 3: that moment led me to joining one medical here in
- 6:03Speaker 3: New York. I ended up being able to get in
- 6:05Speaker 3: same day to see a doctor. Now I've seen that
- 6:07Speaker 3: doctor twice and I really like her. I feel like
- 6:12Speaker 3: it was all supposed to happen this way, but in
- 6:14Speaker 3: the moment, it can be extremely frustrating when it feels
- 6:17Speaker 3: like the world is out to get you. So circling
- 6:21Speaker 3: back on this idea of manifestation and understanding that life
- 6:24Speaker 3: can happen for you if you open yourself up to possibility,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I encourage you to maybe do some thinking about how
- 6:30Speaker 3: you can be proactive instead of reactive. How can you
- 6:34Speaker 3: put more trust in what's going on in your day
- 6:36Speaker 3: to day, and how can you feed what it is
- 6:40Speaker 3: that you really want into the world so that you
- 6:43Speaker 3: open up the pathway for these things to come back
- 6:46Speaker 3: to you.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Again.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I know it's a little flufy, but I feel as
- 6:50Speaker 3: though when I have started to surrender her a little
- 6:54Speaker 3: bit more lately and trust the process and be upfront
- 6:58Speaker 3: with myself and trust so that the things that I
- 7:01Speaker 3: am doing that are within my control are enough. Things
- 7:06Speaker 3: I've started to seem like they're working out a little
- 7:10Speaker 3: bit for me in that way, and it feels really good.
- 7:14Speaker 3: So my prompt for you this week, what's something that
- 7:17Speaker 3: maybe you can reframe in your life right now that
- 7:20Speaker 3: is happening for you instead of to you. What is
- 7:24Speaker 3: something that maybe you can reframe in your life right
- 7:27Speaker 3: now that is happening for you instead of to you?
- 7:32Speaker 4: And now a listener question.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Hey, Emily, this is Steph. I'm a huge fan of
- 7:40Speaker 1: the podcast and I wanted to let you know how
- 7:43Speaker 1: much you've helped me overcome hurdles even in sports outside
- 7:46Speaker 1: of running. One of the many things I admire about
- 7:50Speaker 1: you is your mental strength, and so my question for
- 7:53Speaker 1: you is how do you build that mental strength and
- 7:56Speaker 1: endurance needed to be an athlete through all the ups
- 8:00Speaker 1: and downs and triggers that you may go through. It
- 8:03Speaker 1: may be easy to have a setback, but how do
- 8:06Speaker 1: you build that mental strength and maintain it in a sport?
- 8:10Speaker 1: Especially if it's competitive. Is there anything that you do,
- 8:14Speaker 1: or that you read, or maybe that you say to
- 8:16Speaker 1: yourself that can help you maintain it for the long run.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Any advice or tips would be helpful. Thank you so much,
- 8:23Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 8:25Speaker 3: What's going on, staph. It's always good to hear your voice.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Mental strength in sport. Mental strength in sport is a muscle.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Your mind is a muscle just like your calves, your biceps,
- 8:39Speaker 3: your quads, and that muscle grows with exercise. That muscle
- 8:47Speaker 3: grows when you work it. So when it comes to
- 8:50Speaker 3: building fortitude and strength to push through hard moments, that's
- 8:56Speaker 3: not something that's just going to happen overnight, although I
- 8:59Speaker 3: think a lot of us wish that it worked that way.
- 9:02Speaker 3: What I've learned through all of the tough moments that
- 9:05Speaker 3: I've gone through is that these moments happened to teach
- 9:07Speaker 3: me something, And when you approach future tough moments with
- 9:11Speaker 3: that understanding and with that mindset, then you know when
- 9:15Speaker 3: things get hard that there is opportunity in that. Again,
- 9:19Speaker 3: it's not something that you can automatically fall back on
- 9:23Speaker 3: this idea in a hard moment that this is happening
- 9:26Speaker 3: for me even though it feels like I actually want
- 9:28Speaker 3: to die right now.
- 9:30Speaker 4: It doesn't work like that.
- 9:32Speaker 3: But what I encourage you to do the next time
- 9:36Speaker 3: that something feels hard or it feels like you quote
- 9:41Speaker 3: unquote can't even is ask yourself if you have a
- 9:45Speaker 3: little more gas in the tank. This morning, for instance,
- 9:48Speaker 3: I was doing an interval workout, and the interval workout
- 9:54Speaker 3: was four reps of eight minute efforts, and at the
- 9:59Speaker 3: beginning of the first effort, I'm like, something like two
- 10:02Speaker 3: minutes in and it feels absolutely impossible, and so I
- 10:06Speaker 3: start to break it up into smaller, little doables. Those
- 10:10Speaker 3: small little doables will change your life. I started every
- 10:16Speaker 3: minute changing the song that I was listening to, and
- 10:19Speaker 3: as a result to this thing that I was dreading,
- 10:21Speaker 3: it started to breeze by. And when it's done and
- 10:25Speaker 3: the effort is done, you realize and are reminded of
- 10:30Speaker 3: your strength, even though there was a moment when you
- 10:32Speaker 3: doubted yourself, and that, oh, that's the best damn feeling
- 10:38Speaker 3: in the world. And so if you can muster up
- 10:41Speaker 3: the courage the bravery to start and actually start and
- 10:46Speaker 3: be present in that moment and be proud of yourself
- 10:50Speaker 3: and keep pushing little by little as the challenge persists.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Then you have the opportunity.
- 10:57Speaker 3: And I use that word all the time, but you
- 10:59Speaker 3: know that it is to be true, that it is
- 11:02Speaker 3: an opportunity to prove to yourself your capability and what
- 11:07Speaker 3: you can do if you put your mind to it,
- 11:10Speaker 3: little doables, self belief, and the rest of the pieces
- 11:14Speaker 3: will slowly fall into place.
- 11:16Speaker 4: That's it for this week.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Make sure you're following me over at Emily a Body
- 11:19Speaker 3: and also hurdle over at Hurdle Podcasts. I'll see you
- 11:23Speaker 3: on Monday for episode two hundred. Trust me, it's a
- 11:28Speaker 3: good one. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
