- 7:11let's go in this office. Said, it's a good idea feed killing me.
- 7:16Hard to figure this thing, I don't like. Yeah, thanks,
- 7:25going your cheap hoods armed with the teeth, slugging and shooting their way around
- 7:29town, coming from all directions. We got it fairly well narrowed down,
- 7:31and nine out of the ten jobs they pulled they operated either in San Pedro,
- 7:35the central area, or hollingback. Still having any idea where they pick
- 7:39Army officers for their victims. Jackson wouldn't tell us why they're most still the
- 7:44same. I haven't switched. I had a bit to hold up men and
- 7:46still dress his arm Army enlisted men. They steal a car off, a
- 7:49right to officer, slug them, rob them, and shoot them. Same
- 7:53thing ten times over. The Army checked their personnel out at the fort and
- 7:57keeping tabs on as close as possible. I don't think it's a were going.
- 8:00They bona fide and listed men though we'll haul out Jackson and talked to
- 8:03him again in the morning. Maybe'd be ready to tell us something by then.
- 8:05We'll stay off him. If you need any more men from Metropolitan to
- 8:07help out on the same limit. One okay, skim put me good co
- 8:11on the hoole. Late, yeah, pation all your coach. What was
- 8:26it cold? Three? Chef thirty first of Stabford two eleven and shooting Chief
- 8:33Brown. Ben and I got to the scene at two twenty am. An
- 8:37ambulance was already there, along with the two cruiser cars and a half a
- 8:39dozen curious onlookers. Lying face down on the dirt road about fifteen feet off
- 8:43Stanford Avenue was a man dressed in an army officer's uniform. He wore first
- 8:48lieutenant bars. His blouse had been half ripped off, and the side of
- 8:52his face was bruised and swollen. The back of his head showed the results
- 8:54of a vicious beating. There were two bullet wounds in his left shoulder a
- 8:58few feet away, sprawled out of his back as a major. He'd been
- 9:01brutally beaten, but he was still conscious. While the ambulance attendants came first
- 9:05aid, we questioned him briefly. Both bodies were lying thirty feet from the
- 9:09inter urban railway tracks. Can you love for telling you how it happened?
- 9:13Hit me on the off the gun. Can't talk too well? No,
- 9:18don't fight good at me? How was Lieutenant Kelly? He was with me.
- 9:22But they'll be okay. They're getting him in the ambulance. We were
- 9:24a hitchhiking downtown, Kelly and me, two men and the Gray Sadan kicked
- 9:28this up. He said they were going back to Fort and all of the
- 9:31men dressed to remember. Too much noise. When you say, miss a
- 9:35minute, what was that the pingey train going by? Can you tell us
- 9:43about it? Missed it? Men? When is it? Tech? Sergeant?
- 9:46And on a private he said? The drivers back to Fort Gray Sadan,
- 9:52pony, I'll have to take care of those space wounds. Get him
- 9:58go ahead, okay, did you see the license number on their car?
- 10:01Too dark? Now? Gray Sadan? Pull a gun? Stop the car
- 10:05here, get run money everything, and so'll sting a little. Yeah,
- 10:11it's good. You think you'd recognize the men if you see him again.
- 10:15The one was tall six or two. I guess think I know. They
- 10:18shot Kelly tried around, they shot him. How is he he's okay.
- 10:24Is there anything else you can tell us about the man? Ambulance is ready
- 10:26or take him? We can talk to him later. Alright rah yeah,
- 10:35easy, okay, let's go. Okay, it's not getting any better.
- 10:45I sure like to cut him up. Don't they go to a good set
- 10:46of footprints over there? Tire Impressions put it called the crime light. Yeah,
- 10:50two men in a great sadan. How does that match up? I
- 10:54said, I'm all army officers. So one on the gun, one was
- 10:56tall? Anything to you, but most of the other victims game? It
- 11:00is that description. Either the same tall guy works most of the jobs or
- 11:03he's got a twin brother. Stats office make a run on the description for
- 11:05you for a different times. Nothing yet, I better get this new information
- 11:09on the air out of way now. We steal a different car for every
- 11:13job. In the morning after we find the car, usually clean, no
- 11:16prints. This thing doesn't that up in my book? Army officers aren't loaded
- 11:20with Is that Army officers aren't loaded with doll These punks are after something else
- 11:28beside the money. What do you mean? Whatever dollar there steal? They
- 11:31break a bone? How does that ship up to you? Do you think
- 11:33they like to draw bled I think so. I think they're pointing for murder.
- 11:37What's the motive? Chief, I forgot the motives. I don't care
- 11:39what their reason is. Somebody's robbing and shooting. It's our job to stop
- 11:43them. It's a trouble with motives, how I mean, they always show
- 11:46up. After the murder, two am, crime lab crew arrived and went
- 11:54to work searching the area for evidence and taking casts of the footprints and tyrant
- 11:56prices. The Chief of Detectives, Ben and I drew back to Georgia Street
- 12:00Receiving Hospital in time to watch the doctor remove two thirty eight caliber slugs from
- 12:05the shoulder of one of the victims from his ID bracelet. He was identified
- 12:09as Harold Kelly, first Lieutenant Signal Corps, US Army. The other victim
- 12:13was Major Richard Farmer, Signal Corps. I instiled the slugs for evidence,
- 12:16and then we drove back to the crime lab and dropped him off. The
- 12:20next morning, before they were transferred to a military hospital for further treatment,
- 12:24we talked with Lieutenant Kelly and Major Farmer and filled out a robbery report and
- 12:28won for a crime against person. Five minutes past ten, we checked back
- 12:31into robbery detaimp. I'm better see if we can get a genographer. And
- 12:35here's a lot of paperwork to get you up on. Yeah, I'm gonna
- 12:39have to learn short Joe. Yeah, yes, man, a minute,
- 12:41will you bry He picked up a gray Sedan using that job last night where
- 12:48on Laguna about a block for Maco Park. They find any nothing. The
- 12:50boys from Layton Fingerprints called just before you came in. They dusted the car
- 12:54inside out. No, look that Roy Jackson we picked up last night as
- 12:58Helmiceegon got the stake out on his apartment. Yeah, Fremont and t Trick.
- 13:01Nothing yet. What'd you find out at the hospital this morning? Well,
- 13:03we talked to Lieutenant Kelly and that major farmer again. They're still in
- 13:07bad shape. You have anything to add now? We got their crime reports
- 13:11and a list of the property take and gave it to pawn shop Detailed to
- 13:15put on the stolen property list. What are the hold up men doing with
- 13:16all the stuff they grabbed? Watches, cigarette cases, men's jewelry. It's
- 13:20all on the stolen property list. Pawn shops have been alerted. It's not
- 13:24showing up robbery walker. Yeah, just a minute you Joe, Thank you,
- 13:31Bidy Kelly m Yeah, we'll meet it bye. Lee Jones just ran
- 13:39a make on the two slugs they took out of a lieutenant's shoulder. Yeah,
- 13:43they came from the same gun that wounded four of the other victims.
- 13:46Figures. How about the footprint cast they took out there last night? Now
- 13:48it didn't work out, Lee said. He tried matching him up with that
- 13:52set of prints we came across on that job Sunday. There's no match all
- 13:56right, gee, bad, sit down, not yet, just getting over
- 14:01last night's case. What do you got walking? And we're talking over this
- 14:03morning for you two checked in about these hitchhike bended giants. Yeah, I
- 14:07tried everything short of a blockade to grab a hold of men. It's obvious
- 14:11it's not working. About the army brands, they're doing all they can already,
- 14:15it's up to us. We're gonna need more men and better coverage.
- 14:18What are you figuring out? System decoys planet around the city and near the
- 14:20area these hitchhike bend it's been operating again. I can't take a lot of
- 14:24men In't it be worth it if it pays off? About fifty or sixty
- 14:26men should do it. It'll be dressed as second lieutenants all the way up
- 14:30to colonels. They'll travel in pairs. They're going to bunk out at the
- 14:33fort if we're can arrange it. Yeah, it'll be instructed to hitchhike away
- 14:35around town. Welcome and operate between eight pm and six am. What kind
- 14:39of support the guy? Am you? Men? And robbery homicide? I'll
- 14:43have a special detailed cars metropolitan unit to help cover the unprotected spots. When
- 14:46did it stuck tonight? No use waiting you fellas. Might as well pass
- 14:50the word down the line. No time off till the gang's locked up.
- 14:52Okay, we've got to get those punks and get them fast. We got
- 14:54the men in the machinery, so if there's no reason for not stopping them,
- 14:58no excuses understood. Yes, excuse me, robbery walker? Hello,
- 15:05dear, Yeah, I know, but I can't make that coach now a
- 15:09little happy? I just go right ahead here? What's that? A nickel
- 15:18called yours? Eight pm Thursday, Where the permission of the Commanding General,
- 15:26sixth Army, a total of fifty five men dressed as army officers spread out
- 15:30over the city to serve as decoys for the hitchhiked bandits. They were well
- 15:33armed and they traveled in pairs. For the first night, it was the
- 15:37plan to concentrate in the central area. Holland Beck and San Pedro. We
- 15:41started cruising the central area at eight o'clock along with the rest of the detail.
- 15:46The time went slow, midnight came still no sign. We waited out
- 15:50the rest of the night. In the early morning, nothing happened. We
- 15:54figured on some action on the weekend Friday, Saturday, Sunday, nothing happened.
- 15:58Seemed like the hold up men somehow had sensed the decoys and we're staying
- 16:02undercovered. Monday night, February the eighth, the same thing all over again.
- 16:04Three am came and went, I was signed. I'm kind of hungry.
- 16:10You want a hot dog? We need him in the car. No,
- 16:11you go ahead, may have you a bag of potato chips. You
- 16:14want to see if I got him? Okay, I'm right back, yes,
- 16:22or one hot dog? One and uh, give me a bag of
- 16:25those potato chips here too. But were okay? You want everything on that
- 16:27hot dogs, everything but relish. But no, you don't like rather No,
- 16:32okay, no, come on, you can skip that hot dog man
- 16:38whatever it just came in catch a repeat intention call you and the vicinity of
- 16:47Washington figure over a shoot you couldn't. Okay, hit the siren. Let's
- 16:52move. When we got to the scene, neither of the two victims were
- 17:02identified as police decoys. One of them had already been placed in the ambulance
- 17:06men went over to talk to him. The second victim was still lying in
- 17:08the streets, chest riddled with bulletbuos. Two figures bent over him, an
- 17:12ambulance attendant and a priest. I'd heavenly Jerusalem, where God shall wipe away
- 17:17with tears from your eyes. Whether shall be no more sorrow, no more
- 17:21sickness, no more death, or you will live forever in possession of that
- 17:25happiness which the eye hath not seen, nor the ear hath heard. Neither
- 17:29has it entered into the heart of man, but things God hath prepared for
- 17:32them that love him. Is a victim Man in the name of the Father,
- 17:38and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Man, here's your
- 17:44answer. You are listening to dragnets. The case history of a police and
- 18:00investigation presented in the Public Interest Wednesday, February tenth. At the inquest,
- 18:07the murder victim was identified as Marine Corps Lieutenant Robert Paul Lawrence, aged twenty
- 18:11four. The bullets removed from the body at autopsy were taken to the crime
- 18:15lab, where the ballistics men ran them through. They were fired from the
- 18:18same gun used in the previous hold up shootings by the Hitchhike Bandits. The
- 18:22companion of the victim at the time, his murder could add little to what
- 18:23we already knew as far as the descriptions of the gunmen were concerned. The
- 18:27following morning, Ben and I drove out to the home of the murdered man.
- 18:30They interview his father, a colonel Marine Corps retired. Black wreath on
- 18:38the door. Yeah, it's the big house, isn't it. Yes,
- 18:48please, Sergeant Fry, I'm sorry to maryl Oh. Yes, I saw
- 18:53you the other day at the Yes, sir, we hate the body again,
- 18:57but we'd like to ask you a few questions. Yes, all right,
- 19:00we'll just step ahead, thank you. In this way. It was
- 19:07a small man, well built, with thick snow white hair combed straight back
- 19:10and unneath white mustache well trimmed. He walked deliberately with his shoulders thrown back
- 19:15as he showed us into a large living room richly furnished. The picture of
- 19:19the Battle of Bellow Woods hung over the large fireplace. The rest of the
- 19:23pictures in the room were famous Marine Corps officers. Now, gentlemen, how
- 19:29can I help them? It's about your son, Robert. We didn't want
- 19:32to embody at the end. Quest. Yes, I guess I don't have
- 19:36to tell you. Bob's death was a blow. Yes, he's been staying
- 19:40here with me from time to time since my wife died last year. How's
- 19:45this big needs people? Just myself? The wife gone, Yes, sir,
- 19:51we'll only take a minute. You see, everything had been taken from
- 19:52your son, and we'd like to find out if you know what personal property
- 19:56was carrying at the time he was well, I don't know. I guess
- 19:59he had the usual things. A few dollars. It's wallet, Saint Christopher,
- 20:03middle silver as wide, it's the same Christopher might the valuable not too
- 20:07much, no, not monetarily. In that watch, well, yes,
- 20:11that was worth something, a pocket watch. I gave it to Robert when
- 20:14he was commissioned at Quantico. That's his uh graduation picture on the mantle.
- 20:22Here this is Robert. Yes see fine boy side. Robert was a good
- 20:29marine. Do you think you could describe the watch for uce? Gold pocket
- 20:34watch? Caught quite a bit when I bought it for him. There's some
- 20:37engraving on the inside of the cover. What is it? Says? From
- 20:41an old marine to a young one, signed Dad? Anything else about it?
- 20:45Say? Very fine jewel a friend of mine, made to watch and
- 20:48has small chimes inside. And when you push the lever on the side at
- 20:52chimes the hor and nearest quarter hour, very clover, Yes, and I
- 20:55seek and as far as you know, then those are on the value because
- 20:57he had with him. Yes, all right, Colonel Lawrence, thanks very
- 21:02much. You don't have to rush our Can I fix a couple of calley
- 21:03Stay a while, don't you? I'm sorry, colonel, we have to
- 21:06get back the office. Oh well, let me show you to the door.
- 21:11I hope I have been of some help to you, not a feeling
- 21:15too helped a lot, sir, Thank you, Thank you, goodbye?
- 21:25Can I so beautiful French? Everything a man can will accept the sun.
- 21:33For the next six days we got no where. Both robbery and homicide details
- 21:37stayed at work on the case. The city ye decoy plan continued, along
- 21:40with the extra night patrol of cruiser cars from the Metropolitan Division. Dozens of
- 21:45leads were received and tracked down. None of them paid off. We stayed
- 21:48on it. But despite all our work, in one week, the Hitchhiked
- 21:52bandits were credited with sixteen car thefts, eight actual hold ups, and three
- 21:56more assaults with intent to commit murder. February eighteenth, two pm and I
- 22:00were called the Captain Walker's office. What was the door was you, Ben?
- 22:03Oh? Yeah, what is it that both of you know? Berdick
- 22:06here a theft detail? Oh? Sure you want to tell him what you
- 22:10just told me, Buddick? Yeah, just telling the Captain. I was
- 22:12on night Watch last night with Resnick and we picked up this guy for grand
- 22:15theft. Auto got him out in a bowling alley on Vermont. You know.
- 22:18Well, Resnick and I didn't think too much about it. We took
- 22:22him into Central and had him booked. Gave his name as Clyde Black.
- 22:26As I say, I didn't think too much about it, But on the
- 22:27way into work, I got to thinking, this fella comes pretty close to
- 22:32the description of one of your hitchhike bandits. You know. Yeah, he's
- 22:34pretty tall, six two, dark haired, dark eyes, pretty tough.
- 22:37He's telling in jail. Still there anybody else talked to him besides you?
- 22:41Resnick me. That's all. Here's the mugshot we got on him last night.
- 22:44I take a lot. It seems pretty close. You got a home
- 22:48address on him, Yeah, a place on on the South Flower. Here's
- 22:52a number. Thanks. Oh yeah, there was something else. It's certain
- 22:56me kind of funny. What's that When we booked the guy in last night.
- 23:00Yeah, in his back pocket he had a Saint Christopher Metal. Ben
- 23:07ed Berdie and I drove out to the address on South Flower Street which the
- 23:10prisoner Cliented Black had listed. His home address was a rooming house, and
- 23:12the landlord remembered Black, but he hadn't lived there for two months. He
- 23:17gave us Black's forwarding address, an apartment on MacArthur Drive. There, the
- 23:21manager told us he hadn't lived in the building for at least a month.
- 23:23He had moved and left no forwarding address. We put tracers through on him
- 23:26with DMV our business office, and with local merchants in the neighborhoods where he
- 23:30had lived. By six thirty pm, we had an answer an apartment on
- 23:33Pico Boulevard, just east of Alparado. At seven o'clock, we were on
- 23:37our way up in the elevator to the third floor of the apartment house number
- 23:47three oh seven. Must be done this way. Come on, we run
- 23:51down place. Musty Yeah, Mississippi three oh seven. Somebody's in there.
- 23:59The apartments have back. No worry, Joey, woman to covered. Yeah,
- 24:00you better hustle, right, I don't care. Oh, stop talking?
- 24:11Yeah, what is mail man? Registered letter? Okay? Give me
- 24:18police officers. Oh you guys popped up, Joey. They're going on the
- 24:23back ben watching where they got him stopped down? Back? All right,
- 24:30you not cut it? Let mean, let me that's one of them.
- 24:37One more joe here there were three. Alright, let's go insights. Come
- 24:40on, yeah, that's all of them. Watch him with you, Bertie.
- 24:45All right, let's look around. Huh take a look. And a
- 24:55few uniforms for an army. Before we left the apartment, we searched it
- 25:02thoroughly and found dozens of personal valuables, watches, rings, and wallets.
- 25:06There was also a thirty eight caliber cult We took the three men downtown and
- 25:08booked them at Central Jail, and then we dropped off the gun we found
- 25:12at the crime lab for a ballistics chair. Eight thirty five pm, we
- 25:17brought suspect Clyde Black to the interrogation room Captain Walker Ben and I confronted him
- 25:21with the evidence. Here you are, Black, take a look at these
- 25:33well and not mind we know that I never saw him before. Watch his

- 27:18you, mister. The story you've just heard was true. Only the names
- 27:30were changed to protect the innocent. On June seventeenth, trial was held in
- 27:36Superior Court, Department eighty seven, City and County of Los Angeles, State
- 27:38of California. In a moment the results of that trial. It's amazing how
- 27:42many long cigarette smokers are changing to Fatima. Here is the actual report from
- 27:48coast to coast, King size Fatima has more than doubled its smokers. Yes,
- 27:52more and more smokers every day are discovering that Fatima is the best of
- 27:56all long cigarettes. Long sigarette smokers find Fatima has a much different, much
- 28:03better flavor and aroma. Long cigarette smokers find that Fatima is extra mild because
- 28:08it's the long cigarette which contains the finest turkishan domestic tobaccos, superbly blended to
- 28:15make it extra miles. So enjoy extra mile Fatima, best of all long
- 28:21cigarettes. It's wise to smoke extra mild Fatima. It's wise to smoke extra
- 28:26mild Fatima. Clyde Black and the other four members of the Hitchhike Bandit gang
- 28:37were tried and convicted in superior court on one count of murder and several counts
- 28:41of robbery and assault with intent to commit murder. All five are now serving
- 28:45life terms in the state penitentiary. You have just heard Dragnet, a series
- 28:52of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice for Dragnet comes from the Office
- 28:56of Chief of Police W. A. Wharton, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 29:00Your tune for the Stars on NBC Welcome Back. Well, we learn something
- 29:14about Joe Friday. He doesn't care for Relish and thus did any hope of
- 29:19a partnership between Dragnet and the Hans Company. On a more serious note,
- 29:26I love the way they did the scene with the father of the lieutenant,
- 29:34and I think Dragnet one thing it really does well is just sort of the
- 29:41level of emotional subtlety that they work in. There's sometimes a misnomer with Dragnet
- 29:48that the characters don't express emotion, but I think sometimes they do it in
- 29:55more realistic and varied ways that's sane. With the colonel, I thought was
- 30:03just a prime example of that, where just in very subtle ways showed his
- 30:10grief and how much he was in a bad shape with the death of a
- 30:18son, particularly when he asked, you know, really strongly hinted for Friday
- 30:29and Romero to stay clearly felt alone, did not like being alone. So
- 30:37I thought that was a very good scene for showing the effect of this death,
- 30:49and just overall another solid episode. All right. Well, now we
- 30:55turned to some listener comments and feedback. Berry said out, thanks for keeping
- 31:00these programs alive. I remember listening to Johnny Dollar as a kid, so
- 31:03I'm glad to hear them again. I'm impressed with your intros and additional knowledge
- 31:08about the shows. Please keep it up. Well, thanks so much,
- 31:11Barry. And then we do have another comment on the man from Homicide.
- 31:21This one comes from Lewis, who says the detective sounds grumpy and grouching this
- 31:29episode. This is the first episode with this lead character, and I'm not
- 31:34too happy with him. Well, thanks so much for your comment, and
- 31:38I think other there have been others who have expressed similar reactions, and this
- 31:45is definitely one of those characters where we don't quite get unanimous support. I
- 31:51hope you're enjoying the line, and if not, I hope you enjoy ellery
- 31:56Queen coming up shortly. All right, well, that will actually do it
- 32:02for today. We will be back tomorrow actually with a special We'll be honoring
