- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Isaiah chapter 31, Isaiah chapter 31, and we
- 0:23saw last episode. God through Isaiah told Israel
- 0:29and Judah that they were in the wrong for trusting in Egypt's
- 0:34ability to help, protect and to save their nation.
- 0:38Instead of turning to God. God had already told them the
- 0:42way forward, the way of life was repenting, turning back to God,
- 0:47following his way and God would save them.
- 0:50God would take care of them, but they did not want the assurance
- 0:53of their God. They wanted the assurance that
- 0:56they could, if you will see and and touch what my friend Jim
- 1:00would call they. They wanted a tangible Savior.
- 1:03They did not want Yahweh's salvation.
- 1:06And so we can read this in Isaiah 31 and verse #1 Woe to
- 1:10those who go down to Egypt for help and who depend on horses.
- 1:15They trust in the abundance of Chariots and in the large number
- 1:18of horsemen. They do not look to the Holy One
- 1:21of Israel, and they do not seek Yahweh.
- 1:25But He also is wise and brings disaster.
- 1:28He does not go back on what He says.
- 1:30He will rise up against the House of the wicked and against
- 1:34the allies of evil doers. Egyptians are men, not God.
- 1:39Their horses are flesh, not spirit.
- 1:43When Yahweh raises His hand to strike, the helper will stumble.
- 1:47The one who is helped will fall. Both will perish together.
- 1:52So God says the Egyptians, they are imperfect and sinful and
- 1:58wicked as well. And so as Judah aligns itself
- 2:03with Egypt, it means that when Egypt is punished, then Judah
- 2:08will suffer the consequences as well, because Judah, if you
- 2:11will, they were leaning on Egypt.
- 2:12And so when Egypt falls, Judah itself will also fall.
- 2:18And even in previous chapters, we went through that whole
- 2:21section of Isaiah where God highlights here's all of the
- 2:26specific condemnations against Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, Israel,
- 2:31Edom, Moab, etcetera. And so because God does not go
- 2:38back on his word, he wasn't going to change his plans for
- 2:41Egypt downfall their downgrade just because Judah was now
- 2:47relying on Egypt and its large cavalry in order to protect it.
- 2:52God says, Nope, I'm I'm still bringing down the hammer on
- 2:55Egypt. And because you are now allied
- 2:59with Egypt, you are going to get hurt in the process too.
- 3:02Let that be kind of a challenge or encouragement to us.
- 3:07The partnerships that we make in life are really, really, really
- 3:12important. And best case scenario, best
- 3:15case practice is always align yourself with the will and way
- 3:21of God. As a pastor.
- 3:22This is something that we do intentionally as a church that
- 3:28we don't ally ourselves with churches that do not believe or
- 3:33preach the gospel. I could say, all right, well,
- 3:37you know, we could do a lot more community events if I just
- 3:42didn't really care about any sort of doctrinal thing.
- 3:45And so I'm going to, you know, hold a, a church worship service
- 3:50and I'm going to invite the Unitarians across the street
- 3:54that don't believe in the Trinity.
- 3:56I'm going to invite, you know, the the Mormons over here that
- 4:01believe all sorts of things that are not in line with what God
- 4:05has revealed in Scripture. And I'm going to ally with, you
- 4:10know, this church over here that does not believe in what the
- 4:13Bible says on gender and marriage and sexuality.
- 4:17And we're just all going to have a great time together.
- 4:21And I bet we could get a good crowd if we got all of these
- 4:24people together. Or I bet we could be a really
- 4:27popular and we could do lots of good stuff if we just didn't
- 4:31really care about this. The problem is, come Judgment
- 4:33Day, I as the pastor of this church, I am responsible for the
- 4:39oversight of the souls in my care, and I don't want to give
- 4:44other people false assurance of salvation.
- 4:48Salvation comes not just through generic belief in a deity who
- 4:53created the world, or even in a generic belief in the God of the
- 4:58Bible. Salvation is found as we repent
- 5:01of sin and believe in Jesus and his righteousness alone for our
- 5:07salvation, believing what Scripture teaches us about one
- 5:10God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- 5:14And as we believe in what Scripture says, we experience
- 5:18salvation. And as we are saved, we follow
- 5:22in what God's word says. We don't say with false
- 5:27doctrines or cults, other religions that there are other
- 5:32ways to Jesus or that there are a multiplicity of gods or that
- 5:36the Father, we we would not believe that the Father is the
- 5:40Son who is the spirit. They're just putting on
- 5:43different hats or they are, you know, different modes of water
- 5:47during evaporation and condensation and freezing.
- 5:51We would not believe that. And we believe that it is
- 5:54through Jesus's work and not our own work that we are saved.
- 6:00And so what's really important for my job as a pastor is to say
- 6:06we believe in what Scripture teaches, in these guidelines
- 6:09that God has given us. And so I'm not looking for
- 6:14spiritual help from any other way of relating to God.
- 6:22This is what God has said. And so we're going to rely on
- 6:24the Lord. We're not going to rely on
- 6:26people here, Israel said. We're going to ally ourselves
- 6:31with Egypt instead of trusting in God.
- 6:34And they experienced the downfall, the consequences of
- 6:37that. I don't want to come Judgment
- 6:40Day experience the consequences that come from trusting in or
- 6:45relying on someone or some group or some church other than the
- 6:50Lord. Same thing can even be said for
- 6:54like romantic relationships that I wanted to encourage you.
- 6:57If you are not currently married to a person who is not a
- 7:01believer, do not enter into a romantic relationship or a
- 7:06marital relationship with someone that is not a Christian.
- 7:10This is something that's talked about over and over again in
- 7:14Scripture all the way from Genesis multiple times through,
- 7:20but talked about from Genesis all the way through into the New
- 7:24Testament churches. And Paul tells us in Second
- 7:26Corinthians chapter, it's either four or five that we are not to
- 7:31be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.
- 7:35That's not as a result of the fact that they cannot be good or
- 7:39kind. It is that the closest
- 7:42relationships that we are called to have, we want to have with
- 7:46those that will experience the blessing in favor of God, not
- 7:50those who are under condemnation of God.
- 7:54And so we rely on what does God want?
- 7:58What does God say? Is this a good relationship in
- 8:02which I can live out my Christian faith in a healthy
- 8:08way? Obviously when you get into the
- 8:10the business end of things that can get a little more squirrely.
- 8:16Historically in Christian practice, it was way more common
- 8:20for the non Christians to not want the Christians to be
- 8:25involved in work, not so much the other way around.
- 8:28And so I, I would encourage you be strong in the Lord, be strong
- 8:34in your convictions, in your work, those that do not want to
- 8:38work with you as a result of that, that might be honestly the
- 8:42favor of the Lord on you to protect you from some situations
- 8:47in your life. Or if God has people that do not
- 8:51know the Lord that want to work with you, that could be a
- 8:54wonderful way for you to show how a Christian's work ethic is
- 9:00supposed to operate. Someone who treats fairly and
- 9:03kindly, who is generous, who gives adequate compensation, who
- 9:07is always faithful and true to their word, who can show up on
- 9:11time, who can be kind in the way that they deal with a bad things
- 9:15happening. Like all of that is wonderful.
- 9:19But I, I want to encourage you there have a intentionality to
- 9:24your walk with the Lord that you would say, I'm going to rely on
- 9:29God. I'm going to rely on godly ways
- 9:33and godly people, godly truth rather than just on what seems
- 9:38best to me. I'm going to intentionally seek
- 9:42the wisdom and favor of God. Verse #4 For this is what Yahweh
- 9:45said to me. As a lion or young lion growls
- 9:49over its prey, when a band of shepherds is called out against
- 9:52it, and it is not terrified by their shouting or subdued by
- 9:56their noise, so Yahweh of heaven's armies will come down
- 10:00to fight on Mount Zion and on a till like hovering birds.
- 10:04So Yahweh of heaven's armies will protect Jerusalem.
- 10:08By protecting it, He'll rescue it.
- 10:10By passing over it, He'll deliver it.
- 10:14Return to the one the Israelites have greatly rebelled against.
- 10:19For on that day everyone of you will reject the worthless idols
- 10:23of silver and gold that your own hands have sinfully made.
- 10:27Then Assyria will fall, but not by human sword.
- 10:30A sword will devour him, but not one made by man.
- 10:33He'll flee from the sword. His young men will be put to
- 10:36forced labor. His rock will pass away because
- 10:39of fear. That is the one that is like the
- 10:42the rock, the steadiest, the most secure.
- 10:46Likely the the Assyrian king passes away because of fear,
- 10:50like he passes off the scene. There is no confidence that even
- 10:55their strongest and most confident individuals have
- 10:58anymore, it says. And His officers will be afraid
- 11:01because of the signal flag. This is Yahweh's declaration,
- 11:05whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
- 11:11So here, this last statement that's made is that God is going
- 11:15to protect Jerusalem from Assyria.
- 11:19And I believe it is in the 30s that we eventually get to this
- 11:23particular narrative account. I believe it is in chapter 36.
- 11:29So we, I believe, should hit that next week.
- 11:33If you're listening to the podcast on the day that it comes
- 11:36out, we'll, we'll hit that particular portion next week
- 11:40where this actually comes to pass where God protects
- 11:44Jerusalem from Assyria. So that's the end of that
- 11:49particular chapter. It is only 9 verses, so kind of
- 11:52a shorter chapter overall, but I want to encourage you with the
- 11:58with these specific thoughts. God can defend you when the math
- 12:03might not math up. You can trust that God will
- 12:08provide for your needs as you do the right thing, as you continue
- 12:12to do the good thing, God will take care of you.
- 12:16Now, that doesn't mean that God will give you everything that
- 12:18you're hoping for. It doesn't even mean necessarily
- 12:21that God will keep you at the exact same economic level that
- 12:25you might be at right now. Or you might not.
- 12:28You know, if you do the right thing, maybe you break up with
- 12:31someone that you're currently dating that is not a Christian,
- 12:34that you know isn't a Christian. You break up with them.
- 12:37That doesn't mean that tomorrow you're going to wake up and
- 12:40you're going to, you know, download Christian mingle
- 12:42actually learn from some people just the other day, I cannot
- 12:46recall who that was, but they met their spouse on Christian
- 12:49mingle. But it doesn't mean that you're
- 12:50going to download Christian mingle.
- 12:52You, you break up with your with your unsaved boyfriend or
- 12:56girlfriend today and tomorrow you'll download Christian Mingle
- 12:59and you will find man just the perfect match for you.
- 13:02It doesn't mean that, but it does mean that God's blessing is
- 13:06found in obedience, that his ultimate protection maybe his
- 13:10shaping of who you are as a person, that you will be a in
- 13:15the sight of God, a better person in the coming month or
- 13:19year or five years. You might be drastically
- 13:24transformed and experienced new levels of openness and hearing
- 13:30of the Holy Spirit as He speaks into your life.
- 13:34You might be able to be a blessing and an encouragement to
- 13:38people in ways you would never have imagined.
- 13:41God may give you a new opportunities and richly bless
- 13:45your business in some financial ways.
- 13:47He might bring along the person that you're actually supposed to
- 13:50be with and that you're supposed to marry.
- 13:52That does know the Lord that may happen, but whatever Ave.
- 13:58whatever way that it looks, God will bless you as you obey.
- 14:04There was a phrase that my my parents would say constantly
- 14:07growing up. Obedience brings blessings.
- 14:12Disobedience brings conflict. Obedience brings blessings,
- 14:18disobedience brings conflict. And I found that to be the case
- 14:22over and over and over again in my life, that when I'm at odds
- 14:27with God, I'm going to be at odds with other people, if you
- 14:31will. It's easiest to be in right
- 14:35relationship with God because God never fails me like I never
- 14:39have to, but I never have to forgive God for anything that He
- 14:44does. I never have to wonder, OK,
- 14:47well, did God mean this insulting thing when he said it?
- 14:52No, like my relationship with God, if you will, is easier in
- 14:56the sense of I am receiving the love and forgiveness and joy and
- 15:01peace and comfort, all of that from God.
- 15:04And I know that He's in the right.
- 15:06And so I'm just seeking to be open and obedient to Him.
- 15:10But then it's that relationship with other people that becomes
- 15:15more difficult. And I'm trying to remember where
- 15:19I was going with that. Nope.
- 15:23It's it totally spaced. So I, I can't recall where I was
- 15:26going. If you're listening and you're
- 15:27like, no, no, I, I, I was with you until you went off the
- 15:30train, until your train went off the rails, then wonderful.
- 15:34That's there for you. I think it was something along
- 15:37the lines of God will use our relationships.
- 15:43Oh, that's what it was. My relationship with God can be
- 15:52sometimes easier. Also, when even that
- 15:55relationship, when even the easiest relationship is not
- 15:59where it should be, then every other relationship is going to
- 16:02suffer. I'm going to be short with my
- 16:05kids. I'm going to be angry with them.
- 16:07I'm not going to treat them well.
- 16:08I'm not going to have a good marriage if I'm at odds with God
- 16:12himself. My business dealings, my my
- 16:14dealings with with people at large, those within my church,
- 16:19I'm just not going to be the person that I need to be if I'm
- 16:22not right with God. And so have that be of of the
- 16:27most consequence and importance for you is be right with God,
- 16:31obey him and it will have repercussions on all the rest of
- 16:35your life. It might involve material
- 16:40blessing or it might involve A relational blessing.
- 16:43It might not, but at the very least there is blessing promise
- 16:47to the people of God that trust in him.
- 16:50They repent of of their way. They turn back to God's way and
- 16:53they find life and joy and love as they pursue that.
- 16:58So go that direction. Thank you for everyone that was
- 17:01watching and or listening today. And I'm glad that I eventually
- 17:07found the track that I was headed on.
- 17:09And God bless you. Next episode will be in chapter
- 17:1432, which I'm looking forward to.
- 17:16It's a really cool portion of scripture.
- 17:18God bless.
