- 0:01SPEAKER_02: What's up, everybody?
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the Carmody Podcast, where comedy meets your or slash Mike Commute.
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: I'm your host, Dave Thompson.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: This is episode number 14.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: I have a very special, wonderful guest today.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: How do I describe this guy?
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: This guy was the tallest guy I met in comedy.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: I don't know offhand if there's anybody in the nearby area that is taller than this man.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: He's tall, he's funny, he's handsome.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: But, boys, he's recently engaged.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Everybody give it up for the wonderful shadow matar, everybody.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: What's up?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Hey, what's up, guys?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: It's me, Mike James, the tallest comedian in the Inland Empire.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: No way.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: No way.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Is he taller than you?
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Is he taller than me?
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: I think we're about to slit the same, but I think his posture is just worse than mine.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: So I think I'd be edging out a little bit.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, you definitely edge him out, Shaddy.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me on, Dave.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I'll have a conversation with you in the car or outside the car.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, Shaddy, you know how we do it here in the Carmedy.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: There's an air conditioner on in the car.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: I'm currently driving.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: I'm in the Cahalco Canyon, so who knows?
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: We might lose each other.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Who knows what's gonna happen?
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, what are you doing right now?
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Are you freaking at home?
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Are you driving?
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: What are you doing?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I just finished up work.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It's 5 p.m.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: on a Friday here.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And so I will do what I normally do, which is I will shut off my laptop and then I will just walk around my parents' backyard and check on the plants that are growing.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: So if you hear some wind, if you hear some vegetables in the background, that's usually what I'm doing on a Friday at 5 p.m.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Well that's freaking though.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: That sounds great.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Well, Shadi, I I usually start this off each each interview asking what kind of car do you drive?
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: Since this is a car slash comedy podcast, what kind of car you got?
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I am driving a 2021 Rav 4.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Um just uh just the rear wheel drive version, not the all-wheel drive version.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: But uh before that, I was driving a 2001 Lexus LS430, which is like the my favorite car that I drove before uh you know before I got this um Rav 4 here, which is great.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: But I really missed that Lexus, but I blew a head gasket, and unfortunately it was gonna cost more to fix the car than the value of the car.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I'm rocking around rolling around with a RAV 4 right now, a little soccer mom car.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: You freaking blew some head, and then right after that you got yourself a car, you could fit some children in, shad.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: That's usually how it goes in life, right?
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Okay, so but real talk though, you you're engaged.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: When's the when's the what month is the wedding?
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Can we know that?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh it'll be in May of 2027 is the uh the wedding day.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So I want to give you a good time because that's the advice that everyone gave us was like just enjoy your engagement period.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: You're only engaged once, so don't rush into it, you know.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Which will, I mean, you know, we've been together for two years now, and uh, you know, by the time we'll be married, by the time we'll get married, we'll be around three years.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So it's not rushing, but it's also not taking our time.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: No, and I gotta say, the only pushback I'm gonna give you on that is that you're only engaged once because everybody gets divorced nowadays.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Um, so we're ready for that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: I'm ready for my second marriage.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm I'm kidding.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: No, I'm staying married forever.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: Uh no, that's cool, man.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I'm happy for you.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm proud of you.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: May is also when we got married.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: We got married May 1st, 2015.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: So the way I can remember it is 5115.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: That's when we got married.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: 5115.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's a great dude.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: How'd you guys meet?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: I always have been meaning to ask you guys at that.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so Ashley and I met uh after I had gone through a breakup.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: So I used to be really involved with my church, and I went on a missions trip to New Zealand, to Auckland, New Zealand, which for those of you that don't know, uh in that city, like everything is legal.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Like hard drugs are legal, prostitution is legal, all that stuff.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: So we did like a church event there.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: And the day that I got to New Zealand after an 18-hour direct flight from LAX to Auckland, I got in the hotel room, I went on Skype on my laptop because not doing international calls on my phone.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I Skyped my girlfriend back at home, and she broke up with me the first day I got there.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: She's like, hey, I'm gonna go hang out with my ex and uh we're gonna hook up.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, via Skype.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: And she was also a church girl, by the way.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: She was like in ministry, like all that, and I was like, oh, oh, frick, okay, this is fun.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then I got back two weeks later, and five days after I got back, we had another church event at the Dodgers Stadium.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: This is going somewhere, by the way.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: I'm so sorry.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: We had another church event at the Dodgers Stadium, and I brought all of my ex-girlfriend's stuff to the Dodgers Stadium, and the people at the security gate were just looking at me like, what the frick is this little box of stuff?
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: And I said, Um, this is all stuff that I want to throw away.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: This means a lot to me.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I want to throw this stuff away here, and uh that's all I have to say about it.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: And the dude's like, whatever, dude, come on.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: It was like, you know, a t-shirt and like a necklace and some pictures and blah blah blah, whatever.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: So I during the event, because we're like actually doing stuff, because I was like helping work the event.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: During the event, when I have a couple minutes of downtime, I go to my seat, I grab that box, I go up to the concourse where uh I could buy a hot dog, but I was poor, so I didn't buy a hot dog.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: And I threw away this box of my ex-girlfriend's stuff, and I was like, yeah, this is ceremonial.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: I'm moving on.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: I walk back down to my seat, I sit down, and I feel my phone vibrate, and it's my now wife adding me on Facebook.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's uh that's not uh you know a calling, and I don't know what it is.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: And here's the thing she added me because she thought I was my brother.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Oh my profile picture at the time was me and my older brother, and she thought she knew my older brother, she knew he was married, it wasn't a romantic adding on of the Facebook, but then I was like, Oh, yeah, I'm not my older brother, lol.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: And then I'm like, you want to keep talking?
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: And she's like, uh, sure, I guess.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: And then we just kept talking, and then one thing led to another, and then I found out she was older than me, she was already an adult, I was a minor, it was real hot, you know what I'm saying?
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Then I smashed her hand in a trunk, and then I had fumbled the keys, and her hand was in the trunk because I didn't know uh, you know, how to hold keys when my girlfriend's hand is in the trunk, and then after I made her hand bleed, then she's like, you know what?
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: You might be the one.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: And who says uh chivalry and romance is bad, right?
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: So yeah, after that long-winded story, Chatty, congratulations on your engagement!
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Thanks.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: So you're so if I'm hearing correctly, what you're telling me is to hit my fiance and it'll last longer.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: No, you you don't you don't hit her.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: What you do is you tell her to put her hand nice and soft, right?
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Where the truck closes of that wrap four, and then you just you just let her rip.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: You just let it rip.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: And then when she says, ah, open it, open it, then you drop the keys, and you're like, I don't know where the keys are.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: And then and then after that, then you're bound to be together forever.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: What's funny about that situation is I'm picturing my car.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I have one of those like automatic um trunk closer things on my park.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So and it would well, no, it would go down to the fingers and then it would just like lightly press and then go.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: But it would just be funny to just have her hand there and be like, no, no, just keep it there.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just keep it there.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: No, it's gonna be cute.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be it's gonna be a great story 15 years from now, I promise.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Yes, and then immediately afterward, you guys get pictures taken with her fingers all busted up with the wedding ring.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, and it'd be like this this is what real love looks like.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I gotta ask, so what do you what does your brother look like in relation to you?
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Because I know what you look like, obviously, but what does your brother look like in relation to you at the time of this picture?
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: He's he's skinnier, thinner face, less hair than me because he's balding.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Shout out, Dan.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: We love you.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Um he's he's he's getting he's his hair is going away a little bit.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: He looks like a rock star-ish kind of, very like church rock star, because he is the church rock star.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: He's the lead guitarist for the largest mega church in Southern California.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, he's he's a he's a church all-star.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Okay, for sure, for sure.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: That's funny.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: So you basically did the equivalent of what like bigger girls do on like dating sites where they'll put their sexy friends on there so that they get swipes on, you know, on uh on accident.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, my brother was rolling in it so much that I just wanted the leftovers.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Uh and it just so happened that the leftover was my wife, and then she's the main career.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, and we joked about that before.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, you added my brother, and she's like, no, like I knew he was married, like it wasn't like that.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: I just knew him, and I'm like, all right, well, either way, you know, I got the I got the cake.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: So the cake's mine, and I have eaten it.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Um so take that out, you will.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Uh wow, we were like, of course, though, Shaddy.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: This is what I love about the pod.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: There's no there's no bounds.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: There's no bounds.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: But Shaddy, let's talk, let's talk more about you because I I want to ask you if you remember when we first met.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Because I was trying to think about it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: And to be honest with you, I couldn't, I remember my first memory of you, but I don't remember the first time we met.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Do you remember when?
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: You know, that's a good question.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: I was thinking about that same thing too today because I'm like, when did I actually meet Dave?
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Because I have some cute stories of how I met a lot of the IE comics, uh, you know, at certain mics, or I had said a certain thing, or you know, made a joke in passing about them or something like that.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: But with you, I can't remember.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: I feel like you're all over the place.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: So I feel like it could have been at a mic in the Inland Empire, it could have been somewhere in in LA or Orange County, and maybe we would have just not paid attention to each other um at the time.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: And then we maybe I feel like it was at Derby's where we the the the first like if I go all the way back, the first memory I have of like having a conversation with you was at Derby's.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: And I remember before I even had that conversation with you, that Justin, shout out Justin at Derby's, and multiple other people had told me about you and how and just how funny you were and how you had a unique perspective on a lot of different things.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: And then when I actually saw you at Derby's doing material, I was like, dude, this guy, he's he's funny, clever, edgy, uh, tall.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: You're so tall, very like good looking guy.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, this guy's got the package.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't have this package, you know what I'm saying?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, thanks, man.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: I love your energy on stage.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, first of all, yeah, again, thank you so much for all those nice things.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, they're very exaggerated compliments, but nonetheless, thank you.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: I I attempt stand-up comedy.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: That's uh that's what I tell people.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no, I mean, it definitely must have been at the it must have been at Derby's.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Um and yeah, man, I just hear, I just from what I heard about you is that you're a workhorse and that you're just all over the place and you put the time into comedy, which I definitely wish I could do more of and I should do more of.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: I was just saying it to my fiance the other day.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: I just gotta get myself out there.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: But I mean, you know how it is.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean well, I don't you might not know because you're constantly writing new stuff.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: I feel like I get into these ruts for months at a time where I just cannot think of anything new to write, and then there'll just be like one or two jokes that come out, or I'll look at my joke set and I'll try and change it up or get it from a different perspective.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And uh yeah, I just it's you know, I really wish I could get myself out there more.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Uh and I'm making excuses, obviously, I could do it, but um, it's just you know, life, life gets in the way.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Life, life life, and you also got to think about too, you know, and obviously now that you're engaged, you're gonna be getting married this next year, you know, about how comedy fits into your life and like what you want out of it.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: And I guess that's a that's a great question for me to ask.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Like, where do you see yourself in comedy, let's say three years from now?
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Do you have any goals within that amount of time of something that you want to achieve or something you want to do?
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Uh, that's a great question.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Um, because I always like kind of preach this to comics, even though they don't want to hear it like newer comics, is I do not have any expectations uh when it comes to my career into comedy, right?
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Like I we meet a lot of comics, I feel like, who do it for different reasons.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Some get into it because they think they were the funniest ones at their high school or like in their group of friends, and they try it and then they try some inside jokes between them and their buds, and try it on stage and it doesn't work out.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Uh a lot of comics are narcissists and they just like the attention on them because they didn't get that attention when they were growing up from their family.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: You know, and that's I'm not I'm not saying any of these are good or bad things, right?
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying this is a lot of the motivations.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Some people see it as like an art form, like the theater kids and stuff who want to try it out, or improv people, and that's this is all fine.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I'm not judging anyone, right?
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Um But you know, and then the last group of people are like ones who see it on TV or they see the Kill Tony stuff, or they see like these meteorises of a lot of comics, and they're like, I want to I want to be popular, I want to be what like famous and and live all this like you know, this luxury lifestyle.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: And for me, like just to bring it all back to the question, right?
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: It's like I just enjoy making people laugh.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Like, it's just such a powerful thing to be able to go on stage and to have an idea in your head and then be like, oh, I can make this funny for someone, and let me see if someone else agrees with it, and then you go on stage and you try and you get people to laugh.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And just I that I remember just being in high school and you know, saying a joke and just getting people to laugh, and it's just this like wave of endorphins of just like, wow, like I love making people laugh.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Like it it's such a uh disarming thing to make someone laugh in a good way, right?
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Like you're making do something involuntary, laughter is involuntary, like um, and you're making someone do it.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: So for me, it's just a very good feeling.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: So maybe there is a little bit of that narcissism uh for my own intentions, but it's just like I just I just love making people laugh.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: So in the next couple of years, I do have some mini goals of like certain clubs that I do want to perform at, and like they're not lofty goals, right?
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Like I'd love to do a laugh factory, some laugh factory, and I'd like to do the ice house somewhere without doing a bringer show.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Um, those are some goals.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, I'd just like to continue developing my set.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: I'm doing my first headlining set in September, so I'm excited that at that.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Let's uh let's go.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, first uh headlining set September 17th at the Rock Gallery in Palm Springs.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: So tickets come out for that.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: And I've seen you out on those streets in Palm Springs, dude.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: You're gonna freaking pack that place out, and that's a great spot.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: That was the very first place that I also had headlined as well.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: And dude, I I'm dude, that's gonna be so great.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: I'm freaking stoked for you.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be awesome.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: I love I love the scene that is developing in like Riverside County and San Bernardino County.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Um it really has just been awesome to see it grow and develop and just really make a name for itself.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: It's it's been that's been awesome to see.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you know, I I think that's great to have those those goals.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: I don't even say like mini goals, but those really are big things because I really feel like us in this area take for granted.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: And I think north of LA too, like in between here and San Francisco, there's there's a a group of comedians in there too.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Um, that we really take for granted that we're only just a few hours from LA.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: Because you might look at like getting on at the ice house or a laugh factory as like you said, mini-bowl, but dude, somebody from rural America getting on the ice house for them is like the biggest dream in the world.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: Like coming out here and and getting an opportunity to do that, whether it's a bringer or whatever or not, like that would be like so huge for them to be able to go back to their home with clips and a and a tape from the ice house.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Like for them, they're like top dog where they where they're from now.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: So, dude, yeah, like I I think that's great.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: Thinking about those different things and freaking, let's see what we could see what we can do about that.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: Let's see what we could do about that, Shadow.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: We'll get you on over there.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Um I'm excited for it to continue.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Um you know, I would say one of the things I would love to talk about about writing is yeah uh seeing your jokes.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: If well, first of all, for those of you listening, if you guys have not seen Shaddy Matar, first of all, follow shout out your Instagram real quick, Shaddy.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just uh at Shaddie Matar Comedy.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: So S-H-A-D-I-M-A-T-A-R comedy.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And that's oh, I'm only on Instagram, I don't use TikTok, but I think I also have a Facebook page as well that that just it posts the same Instagram reels.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: So yeah, Shaddy Matar comedy.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Follow this guy on Instagram, follow him on freaking Facebook.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: If you've never seen him, you have great word choices, very well spoken, not only on the podcast, but in your jokes as well.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: So I I I've been wanting to ask you when you when you're writing jokes, do you go through a lot of different word choices?
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: Like, are you sitting there with the dictionary and thesaurus just like really figuring out word choices?
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Because I feel like your word choices in your jokes do feel very intentional and well thought out.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I think it it's so, you know, one of these things is like it's just about trial and error and trial and error and trial and error, especially when it comes to word choice.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: So like I think uh a really great example of this for comedians would be to watch uh Mark Norman's um uh what is it from page to stage?
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Page to stage.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: We love that here.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Just watching that series and just watching the development of a joke because I think it's really relatable for a lot of comics, right?
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, I remember, you know, for one joke that I had about um about dieting and um you know basically the j basically the joke is like um you know, I mess up on my diet so much that I give myself these pep talks in the car when I'm eating the fast foods.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: You know, since we're talking about a car podcast here.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Um the same pep talks that I give myself in the car are the same things I say to women after drunken hook bad drunken hookups, right?
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Like, at the time we both really wanted this, um, it was just a little in and out, not a big deal.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Um you've had five guys before, no one's gonna believe you.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: So it's like, you know, a little bit of that a little bit of that edgy humor mixed with puns of like fast food places and you know, kind of this song value.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: So so the the word choice with that, right?
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Like when I when I first came up with that joke, I was sitting in the car and I was just like, eat I I remember I was I was eating with someone and I was like, man, I shouldn't be eating this fast food, you know.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: And um they were just like, oh man, you sound like you you like you know just had sex with a chick and it you you regretted it or whatever, and I was like, that's kind of funny.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: So I tried it first, the setup with uh, you know, I have these pep talks in the car with myself after I have after I have um like sex with a woman or something like that, right?
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: But ever when I tried it on stage, people were like, whoa, that's like way too that's way too real, that's way too like uh I do remember an early iteration of that joke.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: I was laughing at you, yeah, you would always encourage me to do that joke, right?
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: And I was just like, it's not funny, it really like throws the audience off.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: Um and then But I'm also encouraging you to do it because I know you're gonna figure it out, and I see the potential in it.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: And so I tried it at home one time, just like I was like talking to my family, and my sister was like, Yeah, because you're set you're basically ad.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Advocating for like sexual assault.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Like, don't do that.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, so how do I soften it?
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Because obviously I don't want to advocate for that.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: She's like, What a great family talk, dude.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: What a great family talk.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: My sister was just like, Can't you just say like bad drunken hookup or something where you're both drawn, like you, you know, it's like it's a little bit more um, you know, it's a little bit more tame.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh yeah, so I tried it the next week saying bad drunken hookup, and it actually got more laughs.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: So to answer your question, when I'm writing, I kind of just go unfiltered with how I feel the joke should be.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: And then I try it on stage, and then when I when it doesn't work, I'm like, okay, am I stupid or is the audience just not getting it?
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Like, and most of the time, audiences are smart, there's a collective knowledge there.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: So you gotta figure out how to make it work.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Like, I have to get out of my ego and be like, no, no, it's the audience that's wrong.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: It's like, no, if you're not funny, figure it out, make make it funny for the audience.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you're more like take the raw idea and premise to stage, work it out on stage, whether it's funny, not funny, and then take it back to the drawing board and get more intelligent with the word choices and then make it more clear for the audience to understand.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Love it.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's uh that's the mentality that I really go with.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, when with most of the stuff we're doing open mics, so that's like the perfect training grounds to test those things.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Well, how how long have you been doing comedy for now, Shaddy?
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: I have been doing November of I did my first open mic in Riverside in November of 2022, I believe.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: So it'll be like what, four years this year?
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: Coming up on four years in a few months.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: Oh show.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Coming up on four years, so still very and it's been just it's really fun.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Like it's just such a great hobby, as I like to call it.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: No, it absolutely is, it really is, and the different places that we have to go, not only in the inland empire, but going south to San Diego, going going west towards LA and Orange County, uh, or east out into the desert, into year yonder into the to the to the scorn of hell, as I like to call it, in the middle of August, which it's about to be.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's freaking hot out there.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but we've done shows out there when it's hot as balls.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: But uh, yeah, man.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: It's it really is cool this position that we're in, and and that we have so many opportunities to do mics and stuff.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Because I really do like I do, I don't know if you've ever done these before, but the the way I'm able to do so many mics is I do like Discord mics with groups from people that are like all over the place.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: And so um, some of these people that I've like gotten to know and talk to, they live in places where they don't have open mics, but once a week.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: So the way that they get in their jokes and workshop jokes with other comics is by going online on Discord and they're sitting with their headphones like doing a set to the rest of us, and then we like bounce ideas off of each other and stuff.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: I've never heard of that before.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, because some people how you do eight mics in a day while I go to five and then I do three while I'm driving.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Like I can do a Discord mic while I'm driving, so I'm not wasting any time.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: Like I'm just I'm getting in getting in ideas and workshopping jokes with other comedians and stuff that are in more rural areas or in other places where just like I said, they don't have that that many options, that many comics, you know, and and it really is helpful.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: It's definitely been helpful for me for sure.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Um now I'm trying to remember where I was getting back to.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, just a bit like that is really cool, and I'm appreciative of where we live because we have so many options within an hour of us.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it definitely is a great spot uh to be in.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: And uh yeah, you I mean, as with anything, you have to put in the time and you have to put in the effort, like and a lot of it is networking, and a lot of it is obviously perfecting your jokes and stuff, but um, a lot of it, you know, fortunately or unfortunately, it's who you know, and like if you make good connections with people, and you have to be like, you know, Frank Martinez taught me this.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: You have to be a good hang.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Like you, you know, if you're gonna be doing stand-up comedy with a lot of these people, you have to be likable, you have to be approachable.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: You can't just be like a slob um and unlikable to hang out in a green room with someone for like two, three hours during a show.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: I I don't think, and I'll just say this from the experience of knowing you for the last few years, I don't think you would ever be a bad hang.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: You seem like a nice person, easy to talk to.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: I've never seen you rage out, you know, get crazy drunk or do anything crazy.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: I think you'd be just fine.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: I I feel like I feel like sometimes the hang is is much overhyped.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Like, I do think it is important if a if a headliner calls on you and is like, hey, come out to do these shows.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Like, obviously, you you want to be a good hang and don't want to like overstep your boundaries and be weird.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: But like at the same time, like I think people hang too much sometimes, and then they don't write enough and they don't get on stage enough and they don't practice enough.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: And like the whole thing is just us getting better, you know what I mean?
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: And I I do feel like sometimes people go way overboard with the hang, and they're like, Man, we got freaking plastered last night.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, Well, I went to three or more mics, you know.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: I just that's cool that you guys had a fun time, but I I did work and now I'm ready for this show, you know.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I totally agree, man.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: I think that's a huge part of it is you know, it's because it is a community, a lot of people are just like, I want to hang out with my friends, like I want to see my friends on board on a Thursday night, a Wednesday night, and I just want to grab a beer or two.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Like, I kind of liken it to back in the day when people would get off work and just go to their neighbor, their neighborhood dive bar and just grab a drink or two with their pals and like you know, like to show cheers or or whatever sitcom kind of show.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: But now the central activity is not really I mean, drinking could be the secondary activity, but the central activity is you know doing stand-up, clowning with your friends, going on stage, stuff like that.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean like I I feel like, well, first of all, I know already we're gonna go a couple minutes over, so hopefully that's fine with you.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: But um, I it it depends on what you want out of it, right?
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, we talked about this earlier.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Like, if you want to be a hobbyist, I'm not of the position like like Godfrey, where he's like, get the frick out of the way, get out of the open mics, you're taking time away from us, you're ruining the art form, blah, blah, blah.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Like, there are people that do every type of hobby as a hobby.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: There's people that play tennis as a hobby, there's people that play basketball as a hobby.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: Like, not everyone is gonna be a professional in everything.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: You know, not everyone is actually trying to be a professional in everything they do.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Some people just actually want to do it for fun.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: And and there's no way to stop that.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: And and there's also no reason why we should try and stop it.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Because those those people bring people, those people can be a good hang.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: And they're also just freaking human beings that need to get stuff off their chest, too.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: And comedy is a very unique thing in that you can have a crazy day and not feel like talking to anybody and go on stage and essentially talk with no response, but yet get everything off your chest at the same time.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: So I totally agree.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Um, I I don't advocate for people to go to open mics though and just vent without being funny.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Like, have a joke, like have a sure, sure, sure.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: Like, try and be funny about it.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Don't this isn't a therapy session.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Like, you're you're up there to do stand-up comedy.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Like, pay for a therapist if you want to get stuff off your chest.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: But if you want to be funny, then go for it.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: You know, if you don't want to be funny, go to the slam poetry because they will love it.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: Because none of those people are funny.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Um no, so is there any is there any bits right now that you've written recently that you're working on?
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm working on a bit right now about how when I was growing up I was a fat kid and I had like fat kid tendencies, and the fat kid tendencies were, you know, so I start listing off like fat kid tendencies.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: So it starts off light with like, oh yeah, you know, I used to look forward to rainy days, not because I liked rainy days, but because it means it meant I didn't have to run the mile in PE.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Um, and then it kind of develops into like I was such a bad kid that like my family's eating behaviors changed.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Like they would buy the foods that I didn't like because it meant that it would stay longer in the pantry, you know.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: So I'm trying to like come up with little fat boy bits, right?
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Um but I also want to step away from like making fun of myself because a lot of my humor I've noticed is like self-deprecating.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Self-deprecating.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is a valid way, but it's like I also want to I also like roast comedy, and I do a lot of roasts, so it's like why can't I make that into bits, right?
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Where I'm not making fun of people, but I'm making fun of ideas or absurdities in in life.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: You know, I I would say too, I would love, and this is purely just as uh being a fan of you when you're on stage, do you doing more bits where you talk about your perspective on things in the world?
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: Like I I would want to hear it.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, like, oh, you had this situation, something happened in your life, I think such and such about this thing or whatever.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: You know, like like if you if you talk to me about the library, I knew I know you would make it funny and tell me whatever it is you think about, whatever that thing is, too.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thanks, man.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: As a Dave fan, it's been really cool to see your set and your art develop, and just like how you can take like a such a mundane thing like apples and make it into like a five to seven minute bit that's funny.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, I actually just added a new one.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: There's a new apple called the Wild Twist Apple.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: Um, so trans people finally got an apple.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Um well you you'll you'll hear it eventually one day, but basically I just say, you know, that's you know, well, you you'll you'll hear it.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: I don't want to give it away, but the wild twist apple has been app has been added.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: Um which is great.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, but yes, as far as the bit, you're working on the the snack bit, the rainy day.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: I was trying to think of something that rhymes with rainy.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: The only thing that came to my mind was gravy.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, it's a rainy day, so now it's a gravy day.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm gonna just freaking get fat.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna eat all day.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: And you're like, oh, they're buying stuff that's that I don't like so that lasts longer.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: So what would you eat if they bought a bunch of stuff you didn't like?
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Would you just eat it anyway?
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: No, I wouldn't.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: It's just like, okay, like I don't like coconut, so they would just buy coconut flavored stuff in the house, and I, you know, it's just like, wow, I'm that fat that I'm shifting the buying habits of my family.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Like, that's that's that's so funny.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's like a fat, you know, that's like ultimate fat boy behavior.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: I've actually never heard it from from that before of like my family is like not buying this food anymore.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: Like my mom wants Hershey so bad, my sister wants ding-dongs, but we can't because I'm gonna eat it all.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: So now everybody's forced to eat organic.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: So essentially, by you being fat, now everybody's changing their own lifestyle.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Right, exactly.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: That's like you know, and I'm making hilarious.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but again, it's that self-deprecating, like, oh, he was a fat kid, like, you know, instead of like uh some absurd thing.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: So I I really gotta sit down with the pen and paper and just think of stuff that's like, you know, like you said, libraries, like it just doing that, right?
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Like, and I'd be interested to hear your process.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Do you just like because for me, what it is, I'll be sitting there and I'll just chuckle to myself about something like that's kind of funny, and then I'll write it down on my phone, and then I'll say come back to it later.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: But so for you, do you pick a random topic and then be like apples?
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Let's see if I can make that funny.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: Well, see, what originally happened was for the Apple bit specifically, I I thought of one in the shower, uh, which was the Granny Smith, and I was like, Yeah, my my friend can say so I I actually do have a friend who is into older women, and he and he said that he's the the granny, he calls himself the granny Smith.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: And and I was like, that's an apple, and so and then I was in the shower and I was thinking about every other name of every other apple, and I'm like, wait, I can think of different um sexual activities for every apple.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: I can think of different different things that have to do with that for the name of every single apple.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, well, if I can think of this when I'm in the shower, this has been done before.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: And then instantly I went online, I searched up Apple bits, I watched a bunch of bits, but none of them had to do with what how I was doing it because it almost seemed so simple that nobody would do it.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: But I couldn't find anything on TikTok, YouTube.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: I asked AI, is there any bits like this talking about the names of every apple being like this or anything?
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: I couldn't find anything.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: I was like, okay, so let me start writing it.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: And then I realized there's like 700 kinds of apples that people would know.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, okay, well, let me take the top 30 and then I'll just do the top 30.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: And then it was like just coming up with one thing for everything, and then I knew that I struck gold.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Shout out, Golden Delicious.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: But I knew I struck gold because I was at a show that I pulled up to a random show, which I'm a big fan of doing.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: I pulled up to a random show in Fullerton, and the guy added me on the lineup last minute because I just came to say what's up.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: And then I did that apple bit.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: It was like the third time I ever did it, and I had just come up with one for Opal, the Opal apple.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: And I was asking people to name apples.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I got one for every single one.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: And I was like just trying to see like what what what does a crowd of like say 30 people, like what are they gonna come up with?
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: What names of apples are they gonna come up with?
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: So even if I don't have it, I can go back to the drawing board and have it.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: And the and the booker, he said opal, and I just written that one that day, and I was like, I freaking knew it, and I did it, and it popped so hard because I had one for Opal that I was like, that's the end of the set.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: I'm getting off a minute early.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: That's the end.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Like, I could I couldn't have done any better than what that was, and I just got off and I was like, okay, this is good.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was gonna say part of it too is the the crowd work element of that joke, the crowd interaction, right?
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: Kind of the improv part of it when you hear an apple that you you know haven't written for written of before.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I had somebody say Bray Burn, that one was when I had to.
