  Speaker 2: Isaac and Rebekah.
• 1:54
Speaker 3: Before this story, we learned how God told Abraham to
• 1:57
Speaker 3: sacrifice Isaac. God had finally given Abraham his promise, but
• 2:03
Speaker 3: now required an act of faith. Abraham, with anguish and sorrow, obeyed,
• 2:09
Speaker 3: but the Lord provided a ram instead and blessed Abraham
• 2:13
Speaker 3: for his obedience. Now we will learn about Sarah passing
• 2:17
Speaker 3: away and Isaac meeting and marrying Rebekah as inspired by
• 2:22
Speaker 3: the book of Genesis.
• 2:25
Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
• 2:28
Speaker 2: Bible in a Year podcast. Now that God has tested
• 2:32
Speaker 2: Abraham's faithfulness, which he passed with flying colors, our narrative
• 2:37
Speaker 2: turns to a time of grieving loss followed by a
• 2:39
Speaker 2: preparation for the future. The first thing we'll hear of
• 2:43
Speaker 2: is the death of Sarah. She had lived long, finally
• 2:48
Speaker 2: born a son to Abraham, and now the Lord was
• 2:50
Speaker 2: calling her to her eternal rest in Him. This was
• 2:55
Speaker 2: to be a time of sorrow and grief for Abraham
• 2:58
Speaker 2: and a final opportunity for him to demonstrate care for
• 3:01
Speaker 2: her and honor her memory. But understanding that his work
• 3:06
Speaker 2: on earth was not yet done, we see that Abraham
• 3:09
Speaker 2: would turn to future planning, to securing a wife for
• 3:13
Speaker 2: his son Isaac, so that God's plan to bless and
• 3:16
Speaker 2: grow his family would continue progressing. Today's passage demonstrates great
• 3:22
Speaker 2: wisdom on the part of Abraham, both in where he
• 3:24
Speaker 2: sends his servant to look for a mate for Isaac
• 3:27
Speaker 2: and in what he insists Isaac do as the search
• 3:31
Speaker 2: is happening. Listen to what he commands his servant to
• 3:34
Speaker 2: do and why he requires that Isaac remain in the
• 3:37
Speaker 2: land where they were. Notice also how Abraham's servant goes
• 3:42
Speaker 2: about finding a suitable partner and how he brings the
• 3:45
Speaker 2: Lord into the process. Watch also as God works through
• 3:49
Speaker 2: the process to ensure that Isaac is provided with the
• 3:52
Speaker 2: right mate in Rebekah. You'll once again see how God's
• 3:56
Speaker 2: plans for His people come together, often in unexpected ways
• 4:01
Speaker 2: and unexpected places. There's God's surprise. Listen now to today's story.
• 4:08
Speaker 3: Abraham and Sarah lived a long life together. Together they
• 4:12
Speaker 3: braved famines, journeyed to new lands, made mistakes, and experienced
• 4:18
Speaker 3: the faithfulness of God over their marriage and family. Together
• 4:22
Speaker 3: they endured heartache and shared in triumph. Yet time is
• 4:26
Speaker 3: the cruel thief of life, and Sarah in her old
• 4:30
Speaker 3: age had gone to be with her Lord. Abraham ventured
• 4:34
Speaker 3: to the land of the Hittites and purchased a field
• 4:37
Speaker 3: and cave there to bury his wife. Filled with sorrow,
• 4:41
Speaker 3: he said goodbye to Sarah, his truest partner and friend.
• 4:46
Speaker 3: God had blessed Abraham in all things. He had accumulated wealth, influence, land,
• 4:53
Speaker 3: and adoration. Yet the death of Sarah reminded him that
• 4:56
Speaker 3: his life was but a vapor, and soon he would
• 5:00
Speaker 3: return to the dust from which he came. It was
• 5:03
Speaker 3: time to consider his son Isaac in securing his future.
• 5:08
Speaker 3: Abraham desired to find his son a wife as faithful
• 5:12
Speaker 3: and God-fearing as his mother was. This would be a
• 5:15
Speaker 3: great challenge, since he dwelt in a land where God
• 5:18
Speaker 3: was not yet known. Canaanites worshipped the gods of the earth,
• 5:24
Speaker 3: and in vain they pursued no higher purpose besides self-pleasure
• 5:28
Speaker 3: and preservation. Abraham called his most faithful servant to him,
• 5:33
Speaker 3: the oldest in his household and his friend. Come and
• 5:38
Speaker 3: swear an oath to me, Abraham said. Swear to the Lord,
• 5:42
Speaker 3: the God of heaven and earth, that you will find
• 5:45
Speaker 3: my son a wife among my home country and family.
• 5:50
Speaker 3: Shall I take your son with me? the servant asked,
• 5:53
Speaker 3: for a woman might be reluctant to come with me
• 5:56
Speaker 3: if her potential husband is not there. You shall go
• 5:59
Speaker 3: to my home country without Isaac, Abraham pressed. God has
• 6:04
Speaker 3: promised him this land, and he shall not depart from it.
• 6:09
Speaker 3: If a woman is unwilling to go with you, then
• 6:11
Speaker 3: I release you from your oath. But I trust God
• 6:14
Speaker 3: will provide, since he has promised that my son will
• 6:18
Speaker 3: continue to build a nation with his children. So the
• 6:21
Speaker 3: servant swore an oath to Abraham by putting his hand
• 6:24
Speaker 3: on his thigh, which was a form of serious covenant promise.
• 6:29
Speaker 3: Then the servant departed back to the land of Mesopotamia,
• 6:32
Speaker 3: to the city of Naor, with ten of his master's
• 6:35
Speaker 3: camels and gifts. After a long journey, the servant had
• 6:40
Speaker 3: arrived on the outskirts of his master's homeland. At the
• 6:44
Speaker 3: time of evening, he brought his camels to drink from
• 6:47
Speaker 3: a well. This was the time when women from town
• 6:50
Speaker 3: came to draw water for their families. The servant looked
• 6:54
Speaker 3: to God, saying, Then the servant, knowing God's faithfulness, prayed
• 6:58
Speaker 3: a strange prayer, saying, I am standing near this spring,
• 7:11
Speaker 3: and the young women of the city are coming out
• 7:13
Speaker 3: to draw water. I will ask them for a drink,
• 7:17
Speaker 3: and whoever also offers to give my camels water will
• 7:20
Speaker 3: be the one you have chosen. It may have seemed
• 7:24
Speaker 3: like a strange prayer, yet the servant knew that a
• 7:27
Speaker 3: woman who was willing to go the extra mile to
• 7:30
Speaker 3: bless a stranger would truly be an excellent wife. As
• 7:34
Speaker 3: he was speaking to the Lord, Rebekah, the daughter of
• 7:37
Speaker 3: Abraham's brother, came near the spring to draw water. She
• 7:41
Speaker 3: had an elegance and beauty that stood out among the
• 7:44
Speaker 3: rest of the women. The dim light of dusk accentuated
• 7:48
Speaker 3: her beauty, and the servant prayed again that she might
• 7:51
Speaker 3: be the one for Isaac. He approached her gently and asked,
• 7:55
Speaker 3: Would you mind drawing me some water? Rebecca, even more
• 8:00
Speaker 3: young and beautiful looking up close, smiled with kindness emanating
• 8:04
  Speaker 3: from her eyes.
• 8:05
Speaker 1: Of course. Drink, my lord.
• 8:08
Speaker 3: She said while drawing him some cold water. The servant
• 8:11
Speaker 3: thanked her and took a drink with anticipation. As he
• 8:15
Speaker 3: was drinking, she put her hands together and said, I
• 8:18
Speaker 3: will draw some water for your camels. It seems like
• 8:21
Speaker 3: you have come a long way. So she emptied her
• 8:24
Speaker 3: own jar into a trough nearby and led each camel
• 8:28
Speaker 3: to drink from it. Ten times she drew water and
• 8:31
Speaker 3: carried it and waited for each camel to have its fill.
• 8:35
Speaker 3: She did so with diligence and speed. The servant watched
• 8:39
Speaker 3: her work with excitement welling up inside him.' Have you
• 8:42
Speaker 3: done it, Lord?' the servant thought to himself. When Rebecca
• 8:46
Speaker 3: finished with the camels, the servant ran to her and
• 8:49
Speaker 3: adorned her with gifts and gratitude.' Please tell me who
• 8:53
Speaker 3: you are and who your family is,' he said.' Would
• 8:56
Speaker 3: they have any room for me to spend the night?'
• 8:58
Speaker 3: Rebecca replied,' My father is Bethuel, and my brother is Laban,
• 9:03
Speaker 3: and we have plenty of room for you and your
• 9:05
Speaker 3: camels to stay the night.' The man bowed his head
• 9:08
Speaker 3: to God and worshipped. With a grin of astoundment, he
• 9:12
Speaker 3: spoke to the Lord, saying, Blessed are you, Lord, God
• 9:17
Speaker 3: of my master Abraham. Your steadfast love and faithfulness has
• 9:22
Speaker 3: orchestrated everything perfectly, and I am simply blessed to watch
• 9:26
Speaker 3: it unfold. Then the young woman told her household about
• 9:30
Speaker 3: these things. Laban hurried to the well to assist the
• 9:34
Speaker 3: servant and gave his warmest welcome by saying, Come on in,
• 9:38
Speaker 3: I've got the house ready for you, and there's also
• 9:41
Speaker 3: a place for your camels. They all happily settled in
• 9:44
Speaker 3: the house and prepared to eat a meal together. Before
• 9:48
Speaker 3: I eat anything, I need to tell you why I
• 9:51
Speaker 3: am here. The servant said, I am the servant of Abraham,
• 9:55
Speaker 3: and the Lord has truly blessed Abraham since last time
• 9:59
Speaker 3: you saw him. He has become great with flocks and
• 10:03
Speaker 3: herds of thousands. He owns land, silver, gold, servants and
• 10:08
Speaker 3: all sorts of treasures. Yet his greatest treasure is Isaac,
• 10:12
Speaker 3: a son he had with his wife Sarah. He was
• 10:16
Speaker 3: a son given to them in their old age. and
• 10:19
Speaker 3: God's favor is on him as well. The family sat
• 10:23
Speaker 3: at the table, astonished by what he was saying, for
• 10:26
Speaker 3: they knew Abraham from years ago before he had departed.
• 10:30
Speaker 3: The servants spoke again, saying, I have come here to
• 10:33
Speaker 3: find my master's son a wife, and I believe Rebekah
• 10:37
Speaker 3: is the woman God has chosen for him. He then
• 10:41
Speaker 3: told them all the things he had prayed to God,
• 10:44
Speaker 3: and Rebekah's actions confirming all that he had prayed for.
• 10:49
Speaker 3: Laban and his father answered, This is undoubtedly from God.
• 10:54
Speaker 3: Take her and go. Let her be the wife of
• 10:57
Speaker 3: your master's son, as God has made it plain. The
• 11:00
Speaker 3: servant praised God and blessed the entire household with expensive gifts.
• 11:06
Speaker 3: The thought of Rebecca leaving saddened her family, and they
• 11:09
Speaker 3: wanted her to stay a little while longer, but Rebecca
• 11:12
Speaker 3: felt the call of God to go. Similarly, As God
• 11:16
Speaker 3: had beckoned Abraham and Sarah to depart from their homeland
• 11:20
Speaker 3: into something greater, so Rebecca departed as well. Back home,
• 11:25
Speaker 3: Isaac went out into the field to meditate. The sun
• 11:28
Speaker 3: was setting, and the warm breeze whistled across the plains.
• 11:32
Speaker 3: Colors of orange and purple filled the skies, and the
• 11:36
Speaker 3: clouds moved with the wind. Isaac closed his eyes to pray.
• 11:41
Speaker 3: He missed his mother. He whispered to God and breathed
• 11:44
Speaker 3: in the sweet air of the promised land. He then
• 11:47
Speaker 3: opened his eyes, and in the distance he saw the
• 11:50
Speaker 3: camels approaching on the horizon. Rebecca, sitting upon the camels,
• 11:55
Speaker 3: also lifted her eyes to see a distant figure standing
• 11:58
Speaker 3: among the fields. She saw him drawing nearer and got
• 12:02
Speaker 3: off her camel. Who is that man walking in the
• 12:06
Speaker 3: field to meet us? she asked. It is my master,
• 12:10
Speaker 3: the servant replied. So Rebecca put on her veil to
• 12:13
Speaker 3: hide her face for the wedding. Isaac came to greet
• 12:17
Speaker 3: them and was informed about all the things that had
• 12:19
Speaker 3: taken place. So Isaac brought Rebecca to his home and
• 12:23
Speaker 3: the two entered a prepared wedding ceremony. He removed her
• 12:27
Speaker 3: veil and fell madly in love with Rebecca. The two
• 12:31
Speaker 3: became one, as Abraham and Sarah once were. Isaac enjoyed
• 12:36
Speaker 3: the warm embrace and comfort of his wife. And the
• 12:39
Speaker 3: two began to build a.
• 12:41
Speaker 2: Life Abraham and Sarah have been through so much together.
• 12:50
Speaker 2: Countless miles of travel, ups and downs in their marriage,
• 12:54
Speaker 2: and at long last, the joy of a beloved son.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: Sarah has lived a long life and has fulfilled her purposes.
• 13:02
Speaker 2: Her time on earth has come to an end, and
• 13:04
Speaker 2: Abraham grieves her death with great sorrow. Wanting to honor
• 13:09
Speaker 2: her in her passing, He lavishly provides a resting place
• 13:13
Speaker 2: for her body, purchasing a field and a cave. But
• 13:17
Speaker 2: Abraham will not remain stuck in his grief. He understands
• 13:21
Speaker 2: that there is a time to mourn and a time
• 13:23
Speaker 2: to grieve and also a time to look to the future.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: God has promised to bring him many descendants through Isaac,
• 13:31
Speaker 2: and for that to happen, he must find a mate
• 13:33
Speaker 2: for his son. Here we find Abraham acting as a
• 13:36
Speaker 2: wise father and leader of his family. He could easily
• 13:40
Speaker 2: have sent his servant to search the region for a
• 13:43
Speaker 2: young woman for his son, but that could mean a
• 13:46
Speaker 2: marriage to a pagan woman who knew nothing of his God.
• 13:49
Speaker 2: That would mean disaster. So he sends his servant out
• 13:53
Speaker 2: to his homeland far, far away. His servant makes a suggestion.
• 13:58
Speaker 2: Why don't I bring Isaac along for the journey so
• 14:00
Speaker 2: the prospective wife can know I am telling the truth?
• 14:04
Speaker 2: Once again, demonstrating great wisdom, Abraham insists Isaac not leave.
• 14:10
Speaker 2: God had promised that land to him, and Isaac must
• 14:13
Speaker 2: stay there to protect his claim and be obedient to God.
• 14:17
Speaker 2: But there was something more at play here. If Isaac
• 14:20
Speaker 2: had journeyed far away and found a beautiful young woman
• 14:23
Speaker 2: to marry, the temptation would be to stay right there,
• 14:26
Speaker 2: abandoning the land God had given him. By now, Abraham
• 14:31
Speaker 2: has lived long enough to understand the importance of trusting
• 14:34
Speaker 2: and obeying God and of staying the course that God
• 14:37
Speaker 2: has set. So his servant heads out on his quest.
• 14:41
Speaker 2: It is notable here that when he arrives in Nahor,
• 14:44
Speaker 2: the servant prays to God and proposes a way to
• 14:47
Speaker 2: identify the ideal wife. Look what he says in Genesis 24,
• 14:52
Speaker 2: verses 12 through 14. He said, O Lord, the God
• 14:57
Speaker 2: of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and
• 15:01
Speaker 2: show loving kindness to my master Abraham. Behold, I am
• 15:05
Speaker 2: standing by the spring, and the daughters of the men
• 15:08
Speaker 2: of the city are coming out to draw water. Now
• 15:11
Speaker 2: may it be that the girl to whom I say,
• 15:14
Speaker 2: Please let down your jar so that I may drink,
• 15:16
Speaker 2: and who answers, Drink, and I will water your camels also,
• 15:20
Speaker 2: may she be the one whom you have appointed for
• 15:23
Speaker 2: your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that
• 15:26
Speaker 2: you have shown lovingkindness to my master. Why is this
• 15:30
Speaker 2: so notable? We already see that it is not only
• 15:33
Speaker 2: Abraham's direct line that is honoring and following the one
• 15:36
Speaker 2: true God. This servant, living in the midst of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac,
• 15:41
Speaker 2: and their family, have seen their master's worship and trust
• 15:44
Speaker 2: in God, his obedience and dependence upon God, and this
• 15:48
Speaker 2: influenced him greatly. So he seeks God also, asking him
• 15:53
Speaker 2: to find the right wife for his master. He doesn't
• 15:57
Speaker 2: ask for the most beautiful woman, as one might imagine
• 16:00
Speaker 2: he would, wanting to impress his master with a striking
• 16:03
Speaker 2: beauty for Isaac. His test is looking for a kind heart,
• 16:07
Speaker 2: a compassionate person, something that will far outlast physical beauty.
• 16:12
Speaker 2: Waiting by the well, he meets Rebecca. She is beautiful,
• 16:17
Speaker 2: standing out from all the others. But what wins him
• 16:20
Speaker 2: over is how she demonstrates great kindness and generosity to
• 16:24
Speaker 2: a stranger, a foreigner in the land. This is the
• 16:28
Speaker 2: one he's sure of. God is at work in this situation.
• 16:32
Speaker 2: When the servant tells Rebekah he needs lodging, she welcomes
• 16:36
Speaker 2: him to her family's house. There he reveals the purpose
• 16:40
Speaker 2: of his visit to the astonishment, amazement of his host.
• 16:45
Speaker 2: He is granted favor and Laban, Rebekah's brother, testifies this
• 16:50
Speaker 2: is from God, so far be it from them to
• 16:52
Speaker 2: stand in the way. The family grants their blessing and
• 16:56
Speaker 2: Rebekah agrees to the long journey to meet her future husband,
• 17:01
Speaker 2: someone that she has never met or seen. They return
• 17:05
Speaker 2: to Canaan and Isaac is amazed. He is overjoyed that
• 17:09
Speaker 2: God has provided him such a kind and beautiful wife.
• 17:13
Speaker 2: They are married in God's plan for his purpose and
• 17:15
Speaker 2: ultimately the redemption of the world continues to move forward.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: This is a story of God's divine providence. God orchestrating
• 17:26
Speaker 2: the meeting at the right time between the right people
• 17:28
Speaker 2: to provide a right mate for Isaac. It is a
• 17:32
Speaker 2: reminder that God works and does amazing things in our
• 17:35
Speaker 2: own lives, sometimes even despite unlikely odds and obstacles. What
• 17:41
Speaker 2: we need to do is to always trust God, believe
• 17:45
Speaker 2: His promises, and to obey Him whatever He asks us
• 17:50
Speaker 2: to do. Dear Father, thank you for how this story
• 17:53
Speaker 2: reminds us that you are always at work moving to
• 17:56
Speaker 2: bless us and provide for our every need. Thank you
• 18:00
Speaker 2: also for the lesson in grieving and honoring our loved
• 18:03
Speaker 2: ones that we see from Abraham with Sarah's passing. Help
• 18:07
Speaker 2: us to trust that you will work in our situation,
• 18:10
Speaker 2: that we will always bring glory to yourself and accomplish
• 18:13
Speaker 2: your purposes in obedience with our lives. In Jesus' name, amen.
