- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart
- 0:07Speaker 1: podcasts Great Tabby with us here on Unscripted. Honestly, this
- 0:22Speaker 1: is a fantastic episode. Corey Schneider, our buddy from NHL Network.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's gonna be honest. You got great stories about lou
- 0:27Speaker 1: La Morello and ROVERTA. Lawongo, among others. Plus Ryan Dempster,
- 0:31Speaker 1: MLB Network colleague and friend. Obviously a great picture, one
- 0:34Speaker 1: of the greatest pictures ever in Canadian baseball history. He's
- 0:36Speaker 1: got hockey stories as well, being at the Winner Classic
- 0:38Speaker 1: there as he's a former member of the Chicago Cubs.
- 0:41Speaker 2: But Jady would begin.
- 0:42Speaker 1: With the fact also by the way Senophon sixty, Val Kilmer,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I gotta pay tribute to him. I'm your Huckleberry, of course,
- 0:47Speaker 1: I know he love Tombstone. Cal mccarr just got back
- 0:49Speaker 1: from watching the Avalanche Avalanche Flames unbelievable game. Now the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Flames come back, they're down to nothing and they win
- 0:56Speaker 1: this game in the shoot.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Dan Bladar starting was unbelievable.
- 0:58Speaker 1: But honestly, what I was taken with is Cale mccarr
- 1:01Speaker 1: absolute beautiful goal to open the scoring. I got to
- 1:03Speaker 1: speak to him early that day, and as you know,
- 1:05Speaker 1: previous week, I got to see the Canucks, so Quinn
- 1:07Speaker 1: Hughes one day that I got to watch KEYL mccarr
- 1:09Speaker 1: in person.
- 1:10Speaker 2: He's obviously an incredible defense. But here's what I'm a
- 1:12Speaker 2: throw to you.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I asked him, for a guy with your kind of
- 1:13Speaker 1: offensive skill, you could have played any position. Why did
- 1:16Speaker 1: you play defense? He could have been McKinnon and he said, no,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you're right. As a kid, I played every position. But
- 1:19Speaker 1: I just love the idea of playing defense as a quarterback.
- 1:22Speaker 1: That's why I want to do it so much. And
- 1:23Speaker 1: I said, did you ever watch video of these guys,
- 1:25Speaker 1: Bobby Orr whoever? He's like, No, he goes. Honestly, I
- 1:28Speaker 1: was just inspired by the guys around me. I love
- 1:30Speaker 1: Drew Dowdy because I obviously took a lot from Dowdy's
- 1:32Speaker 1: game in terms of his decision making when he's able
- 1:35Speaker 1: to do. Carlson is another big influence on me. But
- 1:37Speaker 1: what Cale mccarr is doing right now, I mean, if
- 1:39Speaker 1: he's your passes. Mike Green, who had a historic thirty
- 1:42Speaker 1: one goal season back in eight nine, that'd be the
- 1:45Speaker 1: highest goal total for defenseman since Kevin Hatcher had thirty
- 1:48Speaker 1: four back in ninety two ninety three. I know you've
- 1:50Speaker 1: spoken a lot about Rerensky, we had him on the pod.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I know you love Quinn Hughes. But how great is
- 1:54Speaker 1: cal mccarr.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Oh, I'm just gonna say this, and I might just
- 1:57Speaker 3: finish it with one line. He's gonna go down as
- 1:59Speaker 3: the best defenseman of all time.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Wow, ahead of Bobby Orr.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he is. I always put it into
- 2:06Speaker 3: categories of like what constitutes somebody to be the greatest
- 2:11Speaker 3: of And I don't like to compare eras. You know,
- 2:13Speaker 3: I'm not the carving are like for me, Crosby right
- 2:16Speaker 3: now is the greatest of our era. I think he's
- 2:19Speaker 3: the go to the era. I wouldn't compare him to Gretzky,
- 2:22Speaker 3: but you could make an argument and if you look
- 2:24Speaker 3: at his body of work, but Cale mccarr will like,
- 2:27Speaker 3: but that's Crosby aside. But Cale mccarr will go down
- 2:29Speaker 3: as the greatest defenseman. I think he transcends. He's gonna transcend,
- 2:33Speaker 3: transcend eras and he could be one of those guys.
- 2:36Speaker 3: He's so good offensively, so good defensively. He's so powerful,
- 2:41Speaker 3: so strong, what he does, what he brings out of players.
- 2:44Speaker 3: And you know, we can talk about Nathan mckinnuntil we're
- 2:46Speaker 3: blue in the face of being the Hart Trophy and
- 2:49Speaker 3: and but what as a defenseman in that position, I
- 2:52Speaker 3: don't think there will be somebody better coming out. He
- 2:55Speaker 3: is just the gold standard. And yeah, I would, I would.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You could put him in any era and he'd be dominant.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I love that take, by the way, because I asked
- 3:02Speaker 1: him just like human interest stuff, I said, after Kale
- 3:05Speaker 1: Holse the former Flame, He's like, that's right, he goes.
- 3:07Speaker 1: My dad did some stuff with the Flames and marketing.
- 3:09Speaker 1: My mom was pregnant at the time. They like to
- 3:11Speaker 1: name Kale and I looked to baptor his being our
- 3:13Speaker 1: buddy Thamas Sikey. Kale Hols I think in his career
- 3:16Speaker 1: had eighty five points, like.
- 3:19Speaker 2: K kale is blowing the doors up and what Kale
- 3:22Speaker 2: Hol's could have accomplished.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And as far as nicknames like Kale Salad or Kale
- 3:26Speaker 1: juice and call ma car Goes, I get both because
- 3:28Speaker 1: I don't mind Kale juice actually because they called me
- 3:30Speaker 1: juicer a little bit, like, all right, Kale.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Juice, you did that kind of journalism.
- 3:33Speaker 1: But it's a ninety second arrival interview would just be boring.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And Bland, I got some good stuff out. Everybody does
- 3:39Speaker 1: kale with a seed, not a cake. Come on, you
- 3:41Speaker 1: better and he's a big Back to the Future guy.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Shout up to Lawrence Goldstein. Later on Your Corey Scheider
- 3:45Speaker 1: mentioned the Angel Network research team.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I asked LG.
- 3:48Speaker 1: He goes, ask himbout Back the Future and before we
- 3:50Speaker 1: started again, never asked a question.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Never ask a question. It's your kids. Somebody's got to
- 3:55Speaker 2: be thought about your kids.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Never ask a question which you don't know the answers.
- 3:58Speaker 1: If you have a second, I just go, hey, I
- 3:59Speaker 1: read that Back the Future is your favorite movie and
- 4:01Speaker 1: the cargoes it was my favorite.
- 4:03Speaker 2: But it's up there.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I okay, you did it one of those.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Thank god on the air. I just go I heard
- 4:07Speaker 1: you're a big Back of the Future fanings. Oh I
- 4:09Speaker 1: love it, love the franchise. I go, you're like a
- 4:10Speaker 1: Dolory out there, buddy, go get him, and he certainly did.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Delareian can go in any yeah, any generation. But wow,
- 4:17Speaker 3: this is a tough night for you. I gotta, I gotta.
- 4:19Speaker 3: It was a great I gonna start pre interviewing you.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I need to me as a friend, just like the
- 4:25Speaker 3: open ended questions.
- 4:26Speaker 4: We know that's going on.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Question yeah, yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 4: We never never.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Asked a question you don't know the answer to because
- 4:33Speaker 3: you're in trouble if you're you know, that's a lot
- 4:35Speaker 3: of it's a lot of mots ball hanging out there.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Could you imagine if I said, I've heard you were
- 4:39Speaker 1: named for kel Hols, because that's not true. I don't
- 4:40Speaker 1: know where you got that from?
- 4:41Speaker 2: A disaster? Oh my god.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Okay, Well we had uh, we we had you know,
- 4:46Speaker 3: we're gonna have an interview with Corey Schneider, but we
- 4:48Speaker 3: had Jordan cairou on and in our notes it said
- 4:51Speaker 3: had would finished second place in a fortnight tournament back
- 4:56Speaker 3: during COVID. So Corey Schneider takes it and he goes, hey,
- 4:58Speaker 3: I heard you finished second in a fortnite He goes.
- 5:01Speaker 4: He goes, no, we finished first. He goes, what do
- 5:03Speaker 4: you think second?
- 5:04Speaker 3: And he just oh, okay, great, dead, We're dead in
- 5:09Speaker 3: the water on air live just dead.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You're right, good, pretty to read, be nice.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I know you want to talk about Kutrov and for
- 5:14Speaker 1: good reason right now in the Atlantic Division. So Toronto's
- 5:17Speaker 1: actually six to one in one of the last eight games.
- 5:19Speaker 1: That could potentially put a strangle on the division. If
- 5:21Speaker 1: they've got two games against Florida one against Tampa the
- 5:23Speaker 1: next week, so we could get battle of Ontario Toronto,
- 5:26Speaker 1: Ottawa and Florida Tampa Bay in the first round.
- 5:28Speaker 2: That'd be really great.
- 5:29Speaker 1: But you want to give some love toa Kida Kutrov
- 5:31Speaker 1: because you look at right now and again, Shane's gonna
- 5:33Speaker 1: talk with this as well. Hellibuck right now is the
- 5:34Speaker 1: favorite Triple Crown category in terms of wins, shutouts, say,
- 5:38Speaker 1: percentage goals against average, So he's a frentially four categories. Certainly, McKinnon,
- 5:42Speaker 1: who I just got to watch, is an incredible player,
- 5:44Speaker 1: but Kutrov might win the Art Ross. He's neck and
- 5:46Speaker 1: neck right now. McKinnon yet not getting nearly enough love
- 5:49Speaker 1: for the heart. Why isn't people getting more love to Cooch.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I just feel like there's still a bad taste from
- 5:54Speaker 3: the All Star Game from last year, and I think
- 5:56Speaker 3: that really hurt him. I was covering the awards and
- 6:00Speaker 3: I just didn't like the way it was handled. I
- 6:01Speaker 3: thought they kind of you know, I know, there's Joe
- 6:04Speaker 3: set award shows, but I think they kind of just
- 6:07Speaker 3: braid him a little bit too much, and you could
- 6:09Speaker 3: kind of sense it even before, like you know, he's
- 6:11Speaker 3: not winning this one, even though again, if you look
- 6:13Speaker 3: at all the top five scores in the league, every
- 6:16Speaker 3: single one's the center. But Nikita Koutrov to be able
- 6:19Speaker 3: to produce that much offense and drive a line from
- 6:21Speaker 3: the wing position is so incredibly difficult. Now, Leon Dreistill
- 6:25Speaker 3: at times will go center wing with him and Connor together.
- 6:28Speaker 3: But what Nikita has done and does every single season,
- 6:31Speaker 3: the last two specifically.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Just can't go. You can't discount that.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Like you know, as a centerman, you're gonna probably get
- 6:39Speaker 3: five to ten assists, especially if you're always starting the
- 6:42Speaker 3: offensive zone where you win. The draw goes back to
- 6:44Speaker 3: the point, there's the shot, a goal, you get an assist,
- 6:46Speaker 3: it happens.
- 6:47Speaker 4: It is what it is.
- 6:47Speaker 3: He doesn't get any of those touches, but everything is
- 6:50Speaker 3: run through him. On the power play. We thought that
- 6:52Speaker 3: Stamkos is gone, they're not. He's not going to be
- 6:54Speaker 3: as effective. I mean, he's even more effective. He just
- 6:57Speaker 3: elevates the play of everybody around him. And now listen,
- 7:00Speaker 3: Hella Buck. I think we were on the network and
- 7:03Speaker 3: we talked and I it's tough to not give it
- 7:05Speaker 3: to him because what he's done. He's first in every
- 7:08Speaker 3: single category for a goaltender, his wins, he's about to
- 7:10Speaker 3: break the record for he I don't think he'll get it,
- 7:14Speaker 3: but he's close as close to winning the record for
- 7:16Speaker 3: most wins in a single season for a goalie. So
- 7:19Speaker 3: you know, it's it's tough to not give it to him.
- 7:21Speaker 3: And the odds makers are typically not wrong, you know
- 7:24Speaker 3: they're they're not far off. But I just can't believe
- 7:26Speaker 3: the love that he's getting. I think he's like plus
- 7:28Speaker 3: a thousand right now. And you know, not taking away
- 7:31Speaker 3: anything that Leon Dreyset's under Nathan McKinnon. I think Leon's
- 7:34Speaker 3: been been the other guy. I would say that's not
- 7:37Speaker 3: talks about enough for the heart. I just think you
- 7:39Speaker 3: have to give it to him. You got robbed last year.
- 7:41Speaker 3: It has to be him or Hellibuck. But I don't
- 7:43Speaker 3: think it will be. But that's my my hot take
- 7:46Speaker 3: is you know, give it to him.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Give your ballot be Hellabach koocher off, then McKinnon, those
- 7:52Speaker 1: be your three. Try cel not making the top three.
- 7:55Speaker 3: That's have you seen in recent memory a heart trophy
- 7:58Speaker 3: that's this highly contested.
- 7:59Speaker 2: No, it's been a great race. I'm with you even tho.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I think, by the way, the call the race is
- 8:02Speaker 1: not because of fascinating same thing. I break down at
- 8:04Speaker 1: meach got the other day, swing low sweet chariot, beach
- 8:07Speaker 1: coff right now, each got right now, second in points,
- 8:11Speaker 1: celebrating your boys.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Third.
- 8:14Speaker 1: The Flames are not gonna make the playoffs, but how
- 8:15Speaker 1: do you not get Wolf at least top three? I
- 8:17Speaker 1: think it's a great race. Hudson, Hudson's gonna win. I
- 8:19Speaker 1: think if the Abs win it.
- 8:20Speaker 3: It was super close, and I think a week ago
- 8:24Speaker 3: and then now it's a it's a two horse, one horse,
- 8:28Speaker 3: it's lane. Hudson's gonna get it. What he's done the record,
- 8:31Speaker 3: it's I tweeted about it. I think a week ago
- 8:33Speaker 3: that like he's the winner. He's gonna get Ittson.
- 8:35Speaker 2: He's got six as system his last two games.
- 8:37Speaker 4: But it's crazy. I mean the one last night was
- 8:39Speaker 4: got off.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I don't know what Sam Reinhardt's doing, just going down
- 8:42Speaker 3: and all on his knees there like that, just with
- 8:45Speaker 3: ten seconds of let the goalie see it. But you know,
- 8:48Speaker 3: I just think what Lane's done this year offensively, it's
- 8:50Speaker 3: you have we haven't seen that. I mean, he's in
- 8:52Speaker 3: He's in the same air as as Chris Chelios, Nick
- 8:56Speaker 3: Lenstrom for rookie defenseman with points, and I just think
- 8:59Speaker 3: it's it's not going to be seen in a long time.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I don't think after this, maybe we will because all
- 9:05Speaker 3: these offensive demon coming into the league. It's just a
- 9:07Speaker 3: different level these kids. But he is, what he's done
- 9:10Speaker 3: is great. I Celebrina just think he's it's too tough
- 9:13Speaker 3: the team he's on to produce and we're just not
- 9:16Speaker 3: going to see. And you know, last year, you look
- 9:18Speaker 3: at Connor Bedard, what he did on a bad team
- 9:20Speaker 3: with the points, and they gave it to him, even
- 9:21Speaker 3: though I thought it should have been brock favor But
- 9:23Speaker 3: brock Favorites didn't have the numbers statistically, But I thought
- 9:26Speaker 3: what he did for his team was just merited him
- 9:29Speaker 3: winning the Calder. I think you're not going to see
- 9:31Speaker 3: that this year with Macklin versus Lane, Lane's gonna get
- 9:33Speaker 3: it all day and they're pushing for a playoff spot.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Matt Vey might make it close, but I think Lane
- 9:38Speaker 3: is now fully run away with it is going to
- 9:41Speaker 3: be a demon winning the Calder this year.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Book it Meetchkoff absolutely unshackled now that Torrella has gone,
- 9:47Speaker 1: Flyers playing inspired hockey.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Torch is gone, thank god, no more structure.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Bradshaw's letting us just just have some fun out there, Katoria.
- 9:54Speaker 2: They all look like a different team, just.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Ripping his clothes off. He looks like Andy Dufrain and
- 9:57Speaker 3: shash Ankradem just crawled through four football fields of shit
- 10:02Speaker 3: to come out on the other side of free.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Each cow is just let me go right, and that.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Team is that team's played well coming off of that,
- 10:13Speaker 3: and you know it's the coach's bump. But I think
- 10:15Speaker 3: they're just they all took a deep excel. But how
- 10:17Speaker 3: about that stuff with torts coming out? We talked about
- 10:21Speaker 3: him last episode, how you get fired? But all, did
- 10:23Speaker 3: you see the stuff that Ryan Whitney posted from spitt.
- 10:25Speaker 4: And chick Uts.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I haven't seen it, he said.
- 10:28Speaker 3: The Apparently the rumors coming out is that he told
- 10:30Speaker 3: Cam York if you resign here, like I'm gonna bury you.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Oh my god, fuck, oh my god.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I do the coach.
- 10:39Speaker 3: There's like stories of that around the league, where like
- 10:41Speaker 3: a coach is like, I'm gonna get you, and that
- 10:44Speaker 3: if you're if you're a player, like is the worst
- 10:47Speaker 3: thing you could possibly hear because there's no way out.
- 10:49Speaker 4: You're dead. So he got saved. Cam York should be
- 10:51Speaker 4: thanking his lucky stars that Torts got fired.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeah, by the way, that's why it was interesting because
- 10:55Speaker 1: York trash but didn't play a single shift in brad
- 10:58Speaker 1: Shaw's first game.
- 10:59Speaker 2: That's why I was wondering.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I'm like, I know what Torts did or I didn't
- 11:02Speaker 1: know this specifically, but I'm like, what did Yorke do that?
- 11:04Speaker 1: It felt like he was being Peelans as well. But regardless,
- 11:06Speaker 1: one more topical and we're gonna get to Ryan Dempster.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Number of top college teams closing up their season, some
- 11:10Speaker 1: high profile prospects signing their entry level NHL deals, most
- 11:14Speaker 1: normally Ryan Leonard with the Capitals, Parole with the Rangers,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and Jimmy Snuggerood with the Blues. Watching snugger Rood last night,
- 11:20Speaker 1: loved Dave snugger Rud who was there and being interviewed,
- 11:22Speaker 1: former Shark, former flyer. Great to see him there and
- 11:25Speaker 1: you see obviously what Jimmy was able to do. What
- 11:27Speaker 1: do you make g D The players straight out of
- 11:28Speaker 1: college try to make an impact of the hockey team.
- 11:30Speaker 2: You saw a car course do it years ago.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I don't know if we'll see, you know, somebody doing
- 11:35Speaker 3: what McCart did or Charlie McAvoy. But I think there's
- 11:40Speaker 3: some really good players coming out of college. I just
- 11:43Speaker 3: think Snugger Ruod I watched that game last night. I
- 11:45Speaker 3: thought he did well. But you know, it's a tough
- 11:48Speaker 3: game to come into you coming out of college, A
- 11:50Speaker 3: team's on a nine game heater, and then you just please,
- 11:53Speaker 3: for the love of God, don't let me lose this
- 11:56Speaker 3: game that I'm in. And I'm my first game in
- 11:58Speaker 3: the NHL, and I'm going to be the reason, not
- 12:00Speaker 3: the reason, but if they lose the game, everybody's gonna
- 12:03Speaker 3: be like Snugger Ruds. They lose, and they it was
- 12:06Speaker 3: it was touch and go, it was twelve seconds left
- 12:10Speaker 3: and they make Jordan kyru bails him out and then
- 12:12Speaker 3: they end up winning an overtime.
- 12:14Speaker 4: But I would have been just oh, it would have been.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Just so tough. You're just sitting there dejected. I had
- 12:18Speaker 3: something similar My seven hundredth game was like I came
- 12:21Speaker 3: in and we're playing I was playing it with Edmonton.
- 12:25Speaker 3: We're playing Santos Sharks, a game we should win. Connor
- 12:28Speaker 3: McDavid was chasing a record. They were kind of on
- 12:30Speaker 3: a heater. And then of course they start the game
- 12:32Speaker 3: and I make a turnover. We're down one nothing, and
- 12:34Speaker 3: I'm like, oh god, I'm like my seven hundth game,
- 12:37Speaker 3: We're gonna end up losing, and then they're gonna be like,
- 12:39Speaker 3: get this guy at it here.
- 12:40Speaker 4: We ended up winning six to one, so it was
- 12:41Speaker 4: all fine.
- 12:42Speaker 3: But I think for Snugger Root, good start he made,
- 12:44Speaker 3: he hit the post, made some good plays, and then
- 12:47Speaker 3: obviously Ryan Leonard. You know, I thought it was a
- 12:49Speaker 3: feeling out process for Leonard as well. I mean a
- 12:51Speaker 3: lot of pressure for him at TD Garden, all of
- 12:54Speaker 3: his boys there.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I thought he got a good.
- 12:56Speaker 3: You know, he had a good hit on on Veal
- 12:59Speaker 3: that was you know, all over Instagram. So I think
- 13:00Speaker 3: he's gonna be happy with that. And I thought the
- 13:02Speaker 3: guys were just great with him. And you know, it's
- 13:05Speaker 3: a game they should have won. Washington, they should have
- 13:07Speaker 3: beat him, and it was a lot tighter than he
- 13:08Speaker 3: probably would have wanted. But yeah, they they've kind of
- 13:11Speaker 3: worried me the last few games. It seems like they've
- 13:12Speaker 3: really taken their foot off the gas.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Washington.
- 13:14Speaker 3: But you know, Leonard, congratulations, good job coming in, and
- 13:18Speaker 3: we got Gabe Perro. I think tonight what the range is.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Should be fun to see, all right.
- 13:21Speaker 1: We got obviously lots more hockey talk on the way
- 13:24Speaker 1: that Corey Strouderhill tellus who he'd vote for for the Heart,
- 13:26Speaker 1: plus stories about lou Li Morello and Robert of la Wongo.
- 13:28Speaker 1: But Ryan Dempster with the great Canadian pitchers of old time.
- 13:31Speaker 1: He's got great stories and a Harry Carry impression on
- 13:34Speaker 1: Val Kilmer films. It's coming up right after this.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Our first guest.
- 13:49Speaker 1: The third round pick of the Texas Rangers the nineteen
- 13:52Speaker 1: ninety five Major League Baseball Draft, he was a two
- 13:54Speaker 1: time All Star World Stories champion in twenty thirteen and
- 13:57Speaker 1: won one hundred and thirty two career games the Florida Marlin.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Since then, I read Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers in Boston
- 14:03Speaker 1: Red Sox. He was also inducted in the Canadian Baseball
- 14:06Speaker 1: Hall of Fame in twenty nineteen. He's one of the
- 14:08Speaker 1: best skating pitchers ever and most importantly a friend and
- 14:11Speaker 1: a colleague at MLB Network with Intentional Talk, which you
- 14:13Speaker 1: can watch weekdays at four o'clock Eastern.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Rocking a Nordeek's jersey, Ryan Dempster, what is up, demp Yes, I.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Love this old school right here. I like, I'm actually
- 14:23Speaker 5: I've been meaning to go get my tug nut. Put
- 14:25Speaker 5: on the back that I had seventy three saves in
- 14:30Speaker 5: a game. I didn't go against anybody else.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Look at demp drop of the hockey knowledge. When I
- 14:33Speaker 2: worked at ESPN years ago.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I'm knocking Chris Berman going to the World Series in
- 14:37Speaker 1: twenty thirteen Red Sox, and I said, Chris, I guess
- 14:39Speaker 1: gotta say one thing to you. Of all the lines
- 14:40Speaker 1: you ever said, the funniest was Ron cough pleays tug nut.
- 14:46Speaker 5: No, and honestly like, I'm a West Coast guy, right.
- 14:49Speaker 5: I grew up out outside of Vancouver, BC. The Canucks
- 14:51Speaker 5: were my jam. But yeah, I could get on the
- 14:54Speaker 5: French channel, I could get Nordiek's games so like, so
- 14:57Speaker 5: there would always be the chance to be able to
- 14:59Speaker 5: do that. So I had this like kind of like
- 15:02Speaker 5: weird love of the Nordeaks for somebody who never watched
- 15:05Speaker 5: them play. I never went to the Pacific Hall scene
- 15:07Speaker 5: and watched them play. Yeah, you know, I just never
- 15:09Speaker 5: got there. And it wasn't until later on that they
- 15:11Speaker 5: moved to Colorado. I became an ABS season ticket older.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Oh really, so you.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Stayed with you you kept the the brotherhood of being
- 15:19Speaker 3: with the Nordeeks when they went to the Avalanche and
- 15:21Speaker 3: who yeah, who was your when you started with them?
- 15:25Speaker 4: It was like your team and what was your favorite
- 15:27Speaker 4: team of the ABS?
- 15:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say when I started with the Nordeeks
- 15:31Speaker 5: it was like, you know, the Michelle Goulet and Peterston's
- 15:35Speaker 5: stay Yeah, Stasny brothers, and that was kind of like,
- 15:38Speaker 5: you know who I fell in love with, and then
- 15:42Speaker 5: Sackic and then they go to Colorado and I ended
- 15:45Speaker 5: up becoming a little bit of friends with Forrestburgh for
- 15:47Speaker 5: a little bit, and so I just kind of you know, yeah,
- 15:50Speaker 5: I rooted for them in a big way and it
- 15:52Speaker 5: was I ran right into it. It was like a
- 15:54Speaker 5: perfect timing too. I moved there in the early two
- 15:57Speaker 5: thousands to Denver and the Nordy the Avalanche were just,
- 16:01Speaker 5: you know, a stud team and it was a lot
- 16:03Speaker 5: of fun and it was season ticketab Liver for a
- 16:05Speaker 5: few years. Still it's still kind of root for him
- 16:07Speaker 5: just because of that.
- 16:08Speaker 2: All right, let's do baseball. Torpedo bat. Everyone's talking about
- 16:11Speaker 2: it now.
- 16:11Speaker 1: It's not new, as you know, it was used by
- 16:16Speaker 1: some times last year. It seems like the Yankees, though,
- 16:18Speaker 1: damper using it to their advantage unlike anyone else. And
- 16:20Speaker 1: Aaron Judge, for the record, goes, hey, I haven't changed
- 16:22Speaker 1: my bat. I hit home runs about what I'm using,
- 16:24Speaker 1: but it certainly seems to be talk. It's really linked
- 16:26Speaker 1: right now to the Yankees. As a pitcher. What's your
- 16:28Speaker 1: thought on the bat?
- 16:30Speaker 5: I'm fine with it, you know, listen, I love that
- 16:33Speaker 5: when you're talking about Aaron Judge. My old teammate Glennon
- 16:36Speaker 5: Rush had a great line. He's like, Aaron Judge, could
- 16:37Speaker 5: it fifty with the shaft of a foe iron?
- 16:39Speaker 4: Okay?
- 16:40Speaker 5: Like it doesn't really mean Look at that game when
- 16:44Speaker 5: they hit nine home runs. In that game, eight of
- 16:47Speaker 5: those nine home runs were either fastballs down the middle
- 16:50Speaker 5: at ninety to ninety three or they were hanging breaking balls.
- 16:53Speaker 5: They were missedlocation. And I think that's what it's kind
- 16:56Speaker 5: of getting lost in all of this is like because
- 16:59Speaker 5: we love to find something we you know, our game
- 17:02Speaker 5: is always miired in some sort of controversy, right dicky
- 17:04Speaker 5: substances from the players, peds, this thing, cheating, you know,
- 17:08Speaker 5: guys hammer early on, trash cans. Whatever we can find
- 17:11Speaker 5: that we want to attach some sort of controversy. We
- 17:13Speaker 5: have to the bigger problem. Where the bigger issue is
- 17:17Speaker 5: we have an inability to control a baseball and throw
- 17:20Speaker 5: it where we want to throw it, you know, And
- 17:23Speaker 5: it's a it's and it's multitude of different reasons. One,
- 17:25Speaker 5: there's such a high stress on velocity, so that's the
- 17:28Speaker 5: number one focus. It's not about location. Like I threw
- 17:31Speaker 5: bullpens and Larry Rothchaw who's my pitching coach, and if
- 17:34Speaker 5: I wasn't hitting my spots, he didn't care how hard
- 17:36Speaker 5: they threw it. And now that that has changed, that
- 17:38Speaker 5: is a bold because it'll let you get away with
- 17:41Speaker 5: mistakes right wrong, If you throw it down the middle,
- 17:44Speaker 5: it's still gonna end up on the other side of
- 17:45Speaker 5: the fence against good hitters. And that's the reality. Like
- 17:48Speaker 5: I watched the game the other day it was the
- 17:50Speaker 5: Reds versus the Rangers. Rockers throwing ninety seven ninety eight,
- 17:54Speaker 5: Brady Singer's throwing ninety one ninety three. Brady Singer is
- 17:57Speaker 5: dotting an ascess. It is on the corner all over
- 17:59Speaker 5: the place, and Kumar Rockers splitting the plate at ninety
- 18:02Speaker 5: eight is getting tattooed Ledli cre hits two homer seven.
- 18:05Speaker 5: RBIs like, it doesn't matter if these guys are so good,
- 18:08Speaker 5: these hitters are so good with mistakes. If you make
- 18:11Speaker 5: them in the zone, they're gonna hammer them. And when
- 18:13Speaker 5: you don't have, you know, good stuff, it's gonna get
- 18:15Speaker 5: hit even harder. And then you have all the injuries.
- 18:18Speaker 5: So with injuries, you're bringing up lesser players, lesser players
- 18:22Speaker 5: who aren't as polished, and guys who are coming from
- 18:24Speaker 5: the minor leagues with less experience. They can't command pitches,
- 18:27Speaker 5: they try to throw an inside basketball, leaks over the plate, homers.
- 18:30Speaker 5: So I'm not sold on this whole torpedo thing. I
- 18:33Speaker 5: understand the concept of the torpedo bat that I get that.
- 18:38Speaker 5: I'm wondering why we haven't been doing sooner. If we're
- 18:40Speaker 5: looking for competitive edges, if that's your place where you
- 18:43Speaker 5: normally hit it. Move the barrel of the bat. There's
- 18:45Speaker 5: been never been a rule against that, you know. But
- 18:48Speaker 5: like Ken, Griffey Junior used a C two seventy one
- 18:51Speaker 5: for his entire career, thirty four inches long, thirty one
- 18:54Speaker 5: inches in wait because he that bat is skinny, skinny,
- 18:57Speaker 5: skinny long at the end, and that's where he hit.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Most of his balls were from the label to the
- 19:02Speaker 5: end of the bat, so that's where all the way
- 19:04Speaker 5: eight on his bat was. So it's nothing new. I
- 19:06Speaker 5: think we're just seeing a byproduct some really crappy pitching,
- 19:09Speaker 5: to be honest with you, and.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Just real quick on the bat, Griffy said, by the way,
- 19:14Speaker 2: because Greg.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Greg Council, the Cubs manager, had the exact same bat,
- 19:19Speaker 1: and he said this to Griffy. He's like, hey, you
- 19:20Speaker 1: and me at the same bat. And Griffy said, Tom,
- 19:23Speaker 1: it's not the arrow, it's the Indian counts.
- 19:27Speaker 2: All right.
- 19:27Speaker 4: That was worth you cutting me off. That was a
- 19:30Speaker 4: good one.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Damp your world's coll out of New Year's z former team,
- 19:33Speaker 1: the Cubs hosted the Winter Classic at Wrigley You were
- 19:35Speaker 1: there for the festivities.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Tell me all about it.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Oh man, it was incredible. Fresh off the plane. I
- 19:40Speaker 5: was in Vancouver. Took a flight from Vancouver back, got
- 19:43Speaker 5: delayed a little bit, so hopping the doors in the
- 19:46Speaker 5: in the door for honestly, dude, I was at home
- 19:48Speaker 5: with my wife, kids like nine bags Christmas trip and
- 19:50Speaker 5: my parents like she's at the inlaws. She's not the happiest,
- 19:53Speaker 5: you know, Like I can't wait to get home. I said, Babe,
- 19:56Speaker 5: I'm out of here. I'm going in the Winter Classical.
- 19:58Speaker 5: See you later. And I went over. I came into
- 20:01Speaker 5: the stadium as the anthem was finishing, and I meet
- 20:04Speaker 5: my buddy and we go to a suite. I was
- 20:07Speaker 5: sitting with Jamie Faukner and the president of the Blackhawks,
- 20:09Speaker 5: and Colin Fucker's, uh, he's the with with us with
- 20:12Speaker 5: the Cubs and marketing, and and then you got McCaskey,
- 20:16Speaker 5: George McCaskey and his son and Brandon Johnson, the mayor,
- 20:19Speaker 5: and it was just packed. You know, there's like secret
- 20:21Speaker 5: service in there. And I'm like, this is not I'm
- 20:22Speaker 5: not here for this. So me and tj Anerino, my buddy,
- 20:25Speaker 5: we took four beers and we went up into the scoreboard.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Oh do do.
- 20:30Speaker 5: Yeah, and we pulled that. Dude, the best seat in
- 20:32Speaker 5: the house by far.
- 20:33Speaker 4: It was I miss that invite.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Sorry, dude, I looked for you, but I was. Yeah,
- 20:40Speaker 5: but it was great. It was a little bit troubling
- 20:42Speaker 5: when you had to use the bathroom, but hey, that's
- 20:43Speaker 5: what defends was for.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I didn't even know.
- 20:47Speaker 3: So that's like the best seat in the house in
- 20:49Speaker 3: Wrigley Are there any other little tricks in like secret
- 20:53Speaker 3: things about Wrigley Field that the fans or you know
- 20:56Speaker 3: that don't know about that, you know, just providing you
- 20:58Speaker 3: with some great stories.
- 21:00Speaker 5: Yeah, like there there really is. Like I said, the
- 21:02Speaker 5: scoreboard is unbelievable. Just that, even if you can't go
- 21:05Speaker 5: up in the scoreboard, just to go up into the
- 21:07Speaker 5: top of the bleachers in center field and take that
- 21:10Speaker 5: in is unreal. It's so great. My favorite hiding spot
- 21:13Speaker 5: is the right field corner deck area because, like you know,
- 21:17Speaker 5: as a former cub, when you walk around, I'm not
- 21:19Speaker 5: saying I'm famous, but like people recognize me Da Damp.
- 21:22Speaker 5: You don't pictures and autographs, and that's fine. I love it.
- 21:25Speaker 5: But like, if I ever just want to get away
- 21:26Speaker 5: because everybody's facing the field and nobody's looking back behind.
- 21:29Speaker 5: You got this great view of everything. You're kind of
- 21:32Speaker 5: a level down. Never take the elevator, you're gonna wait
- 21:35Speaker 5: too long. Always take the Concourse causeway. There's like a
- 21:40Speaker 5: zigzag causeway that goes up. That's way, way better than
- 21:44Speaker 5: the bleachers. You can't beat going to the bleachers. It's
- 21:47Speaker 5: better than any other bleachers in the big leagues. There's
- 21:50Speaker 5: nothing like it. The people are nuts, they're drunk. There
- 21:53Speaker 5: might be a wedding, bachelor parties, bachelorette parties, cup snakes.
- 21:58Speaker 5: You know, it's it's just the best time ever. Man Like,
- 22:01Speaker 5: my brother flies down with a bunch of Firefighters's a
- 22:03Speaker 5: firefighter Vancouver. They fly down every year and they go
- 22:06Speaker 5: and they sit in the left field bleachers. They play
- 22:09Speaker 5: the cup game with the dollar bills and the ball
- 22:11Speaker 5: and all that stuff. It's it's the best team crank Yeah, no, good. Absolutely.
- 22:16Speaker 5: We've had so much fun in the bleachers. And I've
- 22:19Speaker 5: had fun as a player with those fans that are
- 22:21Speaker 5: in the bleachers over the years and have memories, you know,
- 22:24Speaker 5: memories and relationships with those guys. At the last lifetime.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Baseball is a brotherhood for good reason, Damp and clearly
- 22:30Speaker 1: you see that chemistry with you and Malara on intentional
- 22:32Speaker 1: talk and with our buddy Sean Casey and Tho those
- 22:34Speaker 1: great years with the Red Sox. I always think of
- 22:37Speaker 1: the great you know, ballplayers and the fact they could
- 22:39Speaker 1: pull pranks in each other and just anything goes. What's
- 22:41Speaker 1: the best prank either you pulled or one are your
- 22:43Speaker 1: teammates pulled?
- 22:45Speaker 5: Oh wow, good pranks. Yeah, I mean there's the will
- 22:49Speaker 5: Omen pranks top the top. So I was always a prankster,
- 22:53Speaker 5: like you know, whether that was putting a leaner on
- 22:55Speaker 5: a guy's door and you know, with what with what
- 22:59Speaker 5: in it?
- 22:59Speaker 1: Though, I was pretty nicelavorable that don't know what's a
- 23:03Speaker 1: leaner or or trash.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Can can't be too tall because you remember, when you're
- 23:07Speaker 5: looking at the people, you can kind of see down.
- 23:09Speaker 5: So you get a trash can you fill it with liquid?
- 23:12Speaker 5: You know? It depends right, like, Yeah, some guys, hey listen,
- 23:16Speaker 5: if they're not if they're not a good guy, you're
- 23:18Speaker 5: gonna learn really fast how to be a good guy.
- 23:20Speaker 5: And uh, I typically was water that was generally my
- 23:23Speaker 5: like thing. You know, maybe gatorade you can color it
- 23:25Speaker 5: a little bit something like that. You put it against
- 23:27Speaker 5: the door of the hotel door and you knock on
- 23:28Speaker 5: it real loud, and then you just walk away and
- 23:32Speaker 5: then they look out the people and there's nothing there.
- 23:34Speaker 5: So I'm gonna check it and boom. It's like just
- 23:36Speaker 5: to get It's like you just the damn just got unbridge.
- 23:40Speaker 5: You just hear you all these f bombs start getting dropped,
- 23:44Speaker 5: and it's just great. You know, it's so fun. Depending
- 23:47Speaker 5: I did, I did, yeah, oh yeah, depending what's in there.
- 23:50Speaker 5: It is the worst I've been. I've been a victim
- 23:52Speaker 5: of it too. It's not it's not a good time.
- 23:55Speaker 5: One of my favorite ones that I that I started
- 23:57Speaker 5: to do in guys and it's it's hard work because
- 24:01Speaker 5: you know, in hockey you guys have roommates, but in
- 24:04Speaker 5: base we had our own rooms, which is awesome, but
- 24:06Speaker 5: also I kind of liked that roommate aspect. It's kind
- 24:09Speaker 5: of fun. And Todd Simpson, former NHL defenseman, was a
- 24:12Speaker 5: good friend of mine and he used to do this
- 24:13Speaker 5: thing where he would hide stuff from the room and
- 24:17Speaker 5: the guy's luggage so when he got home and be
- 24:19Speaker 5: a coffee maker or I you know, like so I
- 24:22Speaker 5: started doing that. To do is on on road trips,
- 24:25Speaker 5: like somebody'd be like, hey, sweet in my suite and
- 24:27Speaker 5: on the night before getaway day, and I'd just be
- 24:29Speaker 5: stuff stuff in their bags, all kinds of stuff, the Bible,
- 24:34Speaker 5: you know, like just whatever it was that was that
- 24:37Speaker 5: I could find in the hotel room.
- 24:38Speaker 3: So we had what we had guys do, and I
- 24:41Speaker 3: ended up doing it a little bit halfway through my career.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Is if you got off the bus first, because the
- 24:46Speaker 3: rookies would wait, guys would run in and you know,
- 24:48Speaker 3: when you walk into the hotel, there's just a table
- 24:50Speaker 3: full of the you know, every guy's room card. Yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 3: room card is there with their name. So guys would
- 24:55Speaker 3: run and they typically every guy had two room cards
- 24:57Speaker 3: in there, so they'd run in. We'd run in and
- 25:00Speaker 3: I'd take a room card. I'd run up to their room.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I'd look at the numbers, so I'd sprint up to
- 25:03Speaker 3: the room. Then you go to the bathroom and in
- 25:05Speaker 3: the water tank you pull out you pull out the
- 25:09Speaker 3: water hose and you just tuck it kind of just
- 25:12Speaker 3: inside so it's showing a little bit. So when the
- 25:14Speaker 3: guy comes off the long bus ride and goes you know,
- 25:17Speaker 3: takes a leak as soon as he as soon as
- 25:19Speaker 3: he goes to flush, just the water sprays all over
- 25:22Speaker 3: every time that because no one would know, every dudy
- 25:29Speaker 3: would come in and the guys would kind of be
- 25:31Speaker 3: like sussing out there, like they're like who who who
- 25:34Speaker 3: kind of did it? And they're like hey JD, like
- 25:36Speaker 3: oh yeah, like I got you know, water shot all
- 25:38Speaker 3: over me. Yeah, well fuck man, geez, that's tough. And
- 25:41Speaker 3: they're like you did it, didn't You said up a
- 25:43Speaker 3: bitch like nope, never did it.
- 25:45Speaker 5: No. And it's funny too, and how you're saying, like,
- 25:47Speaker 5: dude's just like, oh you got It's like, you know,
- 25:50Speaker 5: it's like the park game. Now you got me. My
- 25:51Speaker 5: mouth was open, you know. It's like it's just like
- 25:54Speaker 5: the dudes are just totally cool with it, Like I'll
- 25:56Speaker 5: never forget. We went on on a trip. It was
- 25:59Speaker 5: a golf fundraiser in Saint Croix. All these ballplayers were
- 26:02Speaker 5: down there and we had these rooms that were kind
- 26:04Speaker 5: of we had like adjoining doors, you know to this
- 26:06Speaker 5: like basically like room right on the beach, and everybody
- 26:09Speaker 5: had their own suite. And earlier in the trip, Mark
- 26:12Speaker 5: Sweeney now you know, a former major league outfielder. Yeah,
- 26:16Speaker 5: super great guy. And so Mark and and Malar kind
- 26:19Speaker 5: of messed with my my room. They put like suran
- 26:21Speaker 5: wrap over my toilet, you know, so the same sort
- 26:24Speaker 5: of thing. It's like, I got me man all over
- 26:27Speaker 5: my knees middle of the night. They like saving they
- 26:31Speaker 5: shaving creamed all the inside of my towels, but then
- 26:34Speaker 5: hung them back up. So like when I face out
- 26:36Speaker 5: off later.
- 26:36Speaker 4: Ye shaving cream the same one in the room.
- 26:39Speaker 5: Yeah. So I'm like, I'm like, you know what these
- 26:41Speaker 5: guys do. Like, I'm just like, nah. So We're all
- 26:43Speaker 5: out of dinner on the last night, and I'm like,
- 26:46Speaker 5: I got an idea, and I got I got man
- 26:48Speaker 5: damn anybody else that tea food get them, you know.
- 26:50Speaker 5: And I'm kind of pretending I got a bad boiler,
- 26:52Speaker 5: you know. And I'm like, I'll be I'll be right back, man.
- 26:55Speaker 5: So I leave, and I when you talk about sprint,
- 26:57Speaker 5: because I knew I only had so much time before
- 26:58Speaker 5: they get suspicious. I sprinted from the main resort all
- 27:02Speaker 5: the way down the hill to the rooms, and I
- 27:05Speaker 5: took Sweetie's entire room, put it on his veranda, like
- 27:10Speaker 5: I moved the coffee table with the books. I put
- 27:12Speaker 5: his phone out there. Anything glued. Yeah, just the bed
- 27:17Speaker 5: was perfectly made. And then I just locked my door
- 27:19Speaker 5: and they're pounded on the door, like I moved the
- 27:22Speaker 5: whole bed. Dude, I moved the bed and remade it
- 27:25Speaker 5: because I say, I'm trying to carry this, like you know, Chris,
- 27:28Speaker 5: it's this mattress out and it's falling apart, and I'm
- 27:31Speaker 5: like putting the bed back together. It was just it
- 27:34Speaker 5: was awesome. It was I love that stuff, and I
- 27:36Speaker 5: missed that. Probably. I try to do that at the
- 27:38Speaker 5: network now, but I keep getting called at the HR.
- 27:43Speaker 3: I haven't started trying it yet. But there's a couple
- 27:45Speaker 3: of couple of jokes you can make with the boys.
- 27:47Speaker 1: But yeahs is gonna like this if ranges are So
- 27:53Speaker 1: I've got to tell the story at the All Star
- 27:55Speaker 1: Game last year in Seattle and in the gym dem
- 27:58Speaker 1: comes in. We're just kind of loosen up here on
- 28:00Speaker 1: the treadmill, like I I went up to last time.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I God, I much watch William how about you? And
- 28:04Speaker 1: you said to me, I was hanging out with Eddie
- 28:06Speaker 1: Vedder and we're listening to the new unreleased music of
- 28:08Speaker 1: the Rolling Stones.
- 28:09Speaker 2: That is an all time flex by you.
- 28:13Speaker 5: Dude. That night was I'll tell this story a little
- 28:16Speaker 5: bit because I think it's I think it says volumes
- 28:19Speaker 5: about ed So I get a text from him and
- 28:22Speaker 5: THEO SAI come down the house to Eddie's got he's
- 28:24Speaker 5: got his house in Seattle. And then down the street
- 28:26Speaker 5: he bought the beach house, just kind of down the
- 28:28Speaker 5: street and it's just this nice, beautiful property and it's
- 28:31Speaker 5: right on the water. And so I show up and
- 28:33Speaker 5: it's and it's him and Woody and uh he works
- 28:38Speaker 5: with the league and and then Chris snow former general
- 28:42Speaker 5: manager with the assistant general manager with the with the
- 28:45Speaker 5: Flames and at this time, you know, he's going through
- 28:48Speaker 5: the als stuffs hitting him really hard. You know, he's nonverbal.
- 28:53Speaker 5: He can still walk, you know, harder to move his
- 28:56Speaker 5: arms and stuff like this, and and so we're all
- 29:00Speaker 5: drinking coronas and it's kind of that you've got a
- 29:01Speaker 5: fire going. And then it's like, you know, hey, man,
- 29:04Speaker 5: you know you're not gonna believe this, but I got
- 29:06Speaker 5: to like he's telling the story. I got to cut
- 29:07Speaker 5: some music for the New Stones album you know, like
- 29:11Speaker 5: Ronnie Wood called me and I'm like, yeah, me too.
- 29:13Speaker 5: I was busy though, so you know, like uh, and
- 29:17Speaker 5: so the sound guy for Pearl Jam works with the
- 29:19Speaker 5: Stone they're cutting this album, so he doesn't want to
- 29:21Speaker 5: hear a few and we're like, yeah, let's go. So
- 29:23Speaker 5: he plays these and then he's like, all right now,
- 29:25Speaker 5: I'm gonna play this, but you promise you cannot. Let's like,
- 29:28Speaker 5: do not let this out, you know, don't tape any
- 29:30Speaker 5: of them, Like, we're not gonna tape it. And he
- 29:33Speaker 5: plays the entire Black Matter the new Pearl Jam album
- 29:37Speaker 5: six months before the Pearl Jam album is being released,
- 29:39Speaker 5: you know. And I know this for a fact, and
- 29:42Speaker 5: it wasn't it didn't need to be said. But the
- 29:44Speaker 5: only reason we heard any of that was because he
- 29:48Speaker 5: knew that Chris only had so much time left on
- 29:50Speaker 5: this earth and that there was a good chance he
- 29:53Speaker 5: wasn't gonna hear any of that music. And that, to
- 29:55Speaker 5: me is why Eddie is one of these iconic legends,
- 29:59Speaker 5: Hall of Fame superstars that truly touches other people's lives
- 30:03Speaker 5: in a way that we can only image. And you know,
- 30:05Speaker 5: and it was just unreal for him to do that,
- 30:07Speaker 5: you know, and and and I'll finish with this. So
- 30:10Speaker 5: we get done at the end of the night, and
- 30:12Speaker 5: then THEO and what are you We got to get
- 30:14Speaker 5: to Chris back then it's cold out. We can't get him.
- 30:16Speaker 5: I think he gets sick, you know. We got to
- 30:17Speaker 5: get him back to the hotel, you know, so he
- 30:21Speaker 5: can't tell us that he doesn't, you know. And he's
- 30:23Speaker 5: kind of like looking at me like got it, Like
- 30:25Speaker 5: I can tell. And I kind of had a few
- 30:28Speaker 5: to me cronos. I'm like, go, why are we going?
- 30:30Speaker 5: You have another album? You can make real quick ed Like,
- 30:32Speaker 5: let's make something right now, you know, Like we're having
- 30:35Speaker 5: a plast. So we get in the car, we take
- 30:36Speaker 5: him back to his hotel. THEO takes him up to
- 30:38Speaker 5: the room. Chris's wife right drops him off at the hotel.
- 30:42Speaker 5: Next day, I get a text message. It's a group
- 30:44Speaker 5: text message from THEO that said, uh, by the way,
- 30:47Speaker 5: I got this from Chris's wife said, Chris had the
- 30:50Speaker 5: best time of his life last night. Didn't want to leave.
- 30:53Speaker 5: Not sure why you guys took him home.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Chris.
- 30:58Speaker 5: You guess in peace, buddy, I know you're up there. Man.
- 31:00Speaker 5: It was a night to never forget. Man, it was
- 31:02Speaker 5: unbelievable awesome.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Oh man, that's so cool.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And I mean you mentioned it's just so cool to
- 31:09Speaker 3: see those stories and the brotherhood of even though you're
- 31:14Speaker 3: within your different sports, it's I mean, you're all going
- 31:16Speaker 3: through the same stuff.
- 31:17Speaker 4: And that's awesome.
- 31:18Speaker 3: By Eddie, And I want to talk about somebody as
- 31:20Speaker 3: well that kind of touched you a little bit in
- 31:22Speaker 3: your careers, Dusty Baker, the manager and and and talk
- 31:25Speaker 3: to me a little bit about him and your best
- 31:27Speaker 3: Dusty Baker story.
- 31:29Speaker 5: Yeah, he was great with me. Like I came over
- 31:32Speaker 5: to the Cubs three after a three season, I had
- 31:34Speaker 5: Tommy John And part of my deal was I signed
- 31:37Speaker 5: a one year deal, not going to basically pitch until
- 31:40Speaker 5: at least August and recovering from Tommy John and and
- 31:45Speaker 5: then they the team had an option if I was healthy.
- 31:47Speaker 5: It was kind of like the New Wave deal at
- 31:49Speaker 5: the time for getting injured players to be able to
- 31:51Speaker 5: And my thing was, I don't want to sit in
- 31:53Speaker 5: Arizona and just like be in the heat and rot
- 31:57Speaker 5: down here, like I've been in the big leagues for
- 31:59Speaker 5: five years already, you know, Like this was an injury.
- 32:02Speaker 5: It wasn't I wasn't good enough. So I just kind
- 32:03Speaker 5: of be with the team. And Dusty was great, man,
- 32:05Speaker 5: He's like absolutely, and right off the bat in spring training,
- 32:09Speaker 5: I was being treated He treated me like I was
- 32:11Speaker 5: prior or would It wasn't that I was some injured
- 32:14Speaker 5: guy that might not ever pitch for him. And I
- 32:15Speaker 5: just instantly took to that. I was like, wow, man,
- 32:17Speaker 5: this is really awesome. And he always was asking me about,
- 32:20Speaker 5: you know, where I was from and my family and
- 32:22Speaker 5: all these things that weren't baseball. And I really appreciated that,
- 32:26Speaker 5: like so much. And he just was great that way.
- 32:28Speaker 5: He treated the veterans so well, and he lved me
- 32:30Speaker 5: in that category. And you know, and then as the
- 32:34Speaker 5: season kind of went along, you know, and I was
- 32:37Speaker 5: getting closer, you know, he was just always pulling for me.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Like even if I was on a rehab start and
- 32:42Speaker 5: a ball and the team was on the road, he'd
- 32:44Speaker 5: shoot me a message like how the game go, you know,
- 32:46Speaker 5: like he didn't know where I was going to be,
- 32:48Speaker 5: you know, a few months from there. But we just
- 32:50Speaker 5: developed a great relationship and he was one of those
- 32:53Speaker 5: guys like if we if we pulled into a you know,
- 32:55Speaker 5: a city, and he always had like he loved the
- 32:58Speaker 5: soul food, right, Like, he always had these awesome restaurants
- 33:01Speaker 5: and he would show up on day one with like
- 33:04Speaker 5: Cain upon container. Eat up, boys, that's good food. That's
- 33:07Speaker 5: got hits in it. You want you want seven? Shout out?
- 33:09Speaker 5: Eat that. Like he was always nourishing us and like
- 33:12Speaker 5: what do you need? You know, And he was just
- 33:14Speaker 5: so much, so much fun that way, and he he
- 33:18Speaker 5: you know, lots of great stories like shoot, I remember
- 33:20Speaker 5: serving cookies and nothing but an apron at Stanley's one
- 33:22Speaker 5: night in Chicago and I turned around and there's my manager.
- 33:25Speaker 5: I'm like, a, first of all, what are you doing?
- 33:28Speaker 5: I thought this was a player only bar and you're
- 33:31Speaker 5: in here, and so I just kind of was like, hey,
- 33:32Speaker 5: do you want a cookie? He's like no, I'm gonna
- 33:34Speaker 5: put some pants on, you know. Like it was just
- 33:37Speaker 5: like he was just a blast, and he you know,
- 33:38Speaker 5: he was always having fun and he was just he
- 33:41Speaker 5: was awesome.
- 33:42Speaker 6: Man.
- 33:42Speaker 5: I was so happy for him when they won the
- 33:43Speaker 5: World It was the one thing that.
- 33:48Speaker 1: You know, oh man, everyone hates was happy for Dusty Vanker.
- 33:53Speaker 1: All right, we'll let tempt out here. I hate doing
- 33:55Speaker 1: this to you because I know it's like, you know, dance,
- 33:57Speaker 1: Monkey Dance. But no one does a better Harry Carry
- 33:59Speaker 1: than you. So I'll give you a template. You know
- 34:00Speaker 1: how much you love movies. Valcolmer passed away. Can you
- 34:03Speaker 1: give me Harry Carrey on Val Kilmer his career broadcast
- 34:06Speaker 1: game with Val Kilmer.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Whatever you got, Harry Carry, Val Kilmore go ahead.
- 34:10Speaker 5: Yeah, well, you know you know that it's a good question.
- 34:13Speaker 5: First of all, my condolences to the to the Kilburt
- 34:17Speaker 5: family and friends. We lost a legend. You know this
- 34:22Speaker 5: guy right here, he was a saint. You know he
- 34:24Speaker 5: did he did everything. He brought the heat. You know,
- 34:28Speaker 5: this guy like Nolan Riot. He brought the heating. And
- 34:31Speaker 5: I'll tell you what what a rock star. I mean,
- 34:34Speaker 5: I didn't even know. To me when I watched that
- 34:37Speaker 5: movie The Doors, I thought it was actually Jim Morrison
- 34:41Speaker 5: on Heroin, but it was Val Kilmore. And and to
- 34:45Speaker 5: see him come back and and let Tom cruise, No,
- 34:49Speaker 5: Maverick that the iceman is the best pilot. And that's
- 34:54Speaker 5: a fact Jack. So Val Kilmore rest in peace. Val.
- 34:59Speaker 5: We love you.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Harry Carry.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Tremendous tremendous Ryan Dempstick see what an intentional talk weeks
- 35:06Speaker 1: an that willb network. Hopefully we get some LB tonights
- 35:08Speaker 1: together at some point. Best the family is.
- 35:10Speaker 7: Always love that you're the best. You got it, dude,
- 35:20Speaker 7: all right, thanks so much for Ryan Damps. So obviously
- 35:22Speaker 7: all time break too.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Think now Jad's and me to Harry carry presents all
- 35:25Speaker 1: day cinefan on sixty it's devastating news. Val Kilmer died
- 35:29Speaker 1: late Tuesday at the age of sixty five. I mean,
- 35:31Speaker 1: this is obviously a very talented actor. I'm not sure
- 35:33Speaker 1: if you had a chance to need to watch the
- 35:34Speaker 1: Valied documentary give it a few years ago. It was
- 35:37Speaker 1: amazing to see him later in his life now, just
- 35:38Speaker 1: reflecting what he's able to do obviously after his battle
- 35:41Speaker 1: with cancer, unable to talk so you know, able to
- 35:43Speaker 1: speak through a machine, but reflecting on his life and
- 35:45Speaker 1: you know, we get to now pay tribute to an
- 35:47Speaker 1: obviously wonderful actor. People are gonna talk about Top Gun
- 35:50Speaker 1: Maverick and I think the movie and Tom Cruise are
- 35:52Speaker 1: very overrated, but that it was a great scene when
- 35:54Speaker 1: you see Val Kilmer today and obviously going back with
- 35:56Speaker 1: Maverick and all this stuff, and obviously the original Top Gun.
- 35:58Speaker 2: People have a lot of fans of that.
- 35:59Speaker 1: However, the debate that you and I will have is
- 36:01Speaker 1: over what is the best Val Kilmer movie?
- 36:02Speaker 2: Because for me, it's Heat.
- 36:04Speaker 1: And before I answer for you, I know you're gonna say, well,
- 36:06Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's a better movie, it's a better performance.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I'll say both.
- 36:08Speaker 1: I'm saying not only the movie and the performance by
- 36:10Speaker 1: Val Kilmer, because yes, Dannier and Pacino the show stoppers,
- 36:13Speaker 1: but Kilmer, he is a valuable supporting part of that movie.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Michael Man's movie is so atmospheric and so beautifully shot,
- 36:19Speaker 1: and of course the score of the bank robbery scene.
- 36:21Speaker 1: But Kilmer is that hair trigger temper, you know, and
- 36:23Speaker 1: he's got one of the great lines of the movie.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Always remember people, Tom Sizemore's line for me, the action
- 36:27Speaker 1: is the juice. I think Kilmer's got one of the
- 36:29Speaker 1: best lines ever felt love. When Daniro asked him early
- 36:32Speaker 1: on you got something on the side, he says, yes,
- 36:33Speaker 1: cheating on his wife. He goesys, she he goes no,
- 36:35Speaker 1: and he says, what do you think about how things
- 36:37Speaker 1: are gonna go? And Kilmer says for me, the sun
- 36:39Speaker 1: rises and sets with her all time beautiful line. And
- 36:41Speaker 1: later on when he gets denied no boy No by
- 36:44Speaker 1: Ashley Judge, he gives him the nonverbal eh. The look
- 36:47Speaker 1: in his face that is the look of a man
- 36:49Speaker 1: whose absolute.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Soul was just crushed. I love Valcimer.
- 36:52Speaker 1: He could play tough, he could play sensitive heat all
- 36:54Speaker 1: time great performance.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Go ahead, give me your I'm your Huckleberry.
- 36:58Speaker 3: I mean, Doc Holliday. It's one of the greatest performances,
- 37:01Speaker 3: you know, for him.
- 37:02Speaker 4: The whole time I thought.
- 37:02Speaker 3: You were near death, I'd be a hucklebar. A funny
- 37:07Speaker 3: quick story about that. So I'm on NHL Network with
- 37:11Speaker 3: Stu Grimson and we go we're on a late show.
- 37:15Speaker 3: We're doing NHL Tonight. So it's like the eleven PM
- 37:18Speaker 3: we're talking about. It's like eleven or twelve. We're talking
- 37:20Speaker 3: about Dallas Stars, and you know where Why Johnson was
- 37:24Speaker 3: having a game, and I kind of just went, I
- 37:26Speaker 3: just went, I got two. I go why Johnson got
- 37:29Speaker 3: two goals? Two guns for the both of you, And
- 37:33Speaker 3: he goes, he like perks up, but he looks at
- 37:34Speaker 3: me and clearly I didn't know this appened, like one
- 37:36Speaker 3: of his favorite movies. He starts quoting throughout the whole show.
- 37:41Speaker 3: He's quoting Tombstone the whole time. I'm like in tears.
- 37:47Speaker 3: And then after the show he goes and tell me,
- 37:49Speaker 3: do you know the line's not I'm your huckleberry, It's
- 37:51Speaker 3: on your huckle bearer. So I go, I go, really,
- 37:54Speaker 3: it's like, okay, So he goes, I'm your huckle bear
- 37:56Speaker 3: because huckle bear is when you were the you were
- 37:58Speaker 3: carrying the coffin.
- 38:00Speaker 4: It's on the coffin. Okay.
- 38:02Speaker 3: So so now before I'm telling everybody this, now I've
- 38:06Speaker 3: told ten people this, okay, So before we come on
- 38:08Speaker 3: this show today, I go, we're gonna talk Val Kilmer.
- 38:11Speaker 3: I got to really make sure is it I'm your
- 38:13Speaker 3: huckle bear or I'm your huckleberry. So I look it up,
- 38:15Speaker 3: like an asshole, I've told everybody, like ten people.
- 38:18Speaker 4: I look it up.
- 38:19Speaker 3: It's always been I'm your huckleberry. Val Kilmer even wrote
- 38:21Speaker 3: about it in his book that he quotes the book
- 38:23Speaker 3: I'm your Huckleberry.
- 38:24Speaker 4: So Steve Dempson led me astray, and.
- 38:27Speaker 2: I'm like the asshole run the round, But I love that.
- 38:30Speaker 5: Did you hear?
- 38:31Speaker 4: Did you hear it's I'm your huckle.
- 38:32Speaker 1: We always had people like the people who have takes
- 38:34Speaker 1: a strong conviction.
- 38:35Speaker 2: You go, no, that's not true. It's one hundred cent.
- 38:37Speaker 2: You can see as loud as you want or strong
- 38:39Speaker 2: as you want. It's not true to but I love.
- 38:40Speaker 4: People, but I I do believe Doc Holliday.
- 38:43Speaker 3: The other two close ones is when he plays the
- 38:45Speaker 3: Sherpa in his cameo and entourage is unbelievable and you
- 38:49Speaker 3: can't deny him, as Deeter von Kampf and mcgruber cannot.
- 38:54Speaker 2: You can't incredible delivery of the name alone.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Dear, let's time to pounce some com Kilmer didn't say officially,
- 39:02Speaker 3: but I think it's pretty clear that it was heat frame.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Here a quote from Val what she said on his instagram.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Imagine being able to say Alan Bob for the rest
- 39:08Speaker 1: of your life. Not many people can do that. I've
- 39:10Speaker 1: seen Bob giggling like a schoolgirl in a van in
- 39:12Speaker 1: the middle of the night because we have to be
- 39:14Speaker 1: quiet because they're filming outside. I've been hugged by al
- 39:16Speaker 1: Pacino in the middle of downtown Ellie like he was
- 39:18Speaker 1: my older brother. I've shot live rounds from high power
- 39:21Speaker 1: to assault weapons over Bob's head while rehearsing lines for
- 39:24Speaker 1: a film, I got to kiss Ashley Judd. I sometimes
- 39:27Speaker 1: lived at Michael Mann's house. I'm in one of the
- 39:29Speaker 1: greatest Cops and Robbers films in film history.
- 39:32Speaker 2: It is absolutely unbelievable. I was in No Hoster. For
- 39:34Speaker 2: God's sakes.
- 39:34Speaker 3: I'm I'm agree in agreement with you. It's one of
- 39:37Speaker 3: my favorite movies. It's his best movie. He's been in
- 39:40Speaker 3: his best I think his best character was Doc Holliday,
- 39:43Speaker 3: but I think Heat is. And you know they've now
- 39:45Speaker 3: submitted the script for Heat Too. I don't know if
- 39:47Speaker 3: you remake that without it. I don't know Tal.
- 39:49Speaker 1: What do you think Tal coming in for the first time.
- 39:51Speaker 1: I like, he's also a big, real genius guy.
- 39:53Speaker 6: Go ahead and tell yeah, I do love real genius
- 39:55Speaker 6: top secret.
- 39:56Speaker 4: I mean, the Doors is incredible.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Heat's an all timer for me.
- 40:00Speaker 6: He's incredible, And I'm like, all I haven't read any
- 40:03Speaker 6: of the books, but I intend to. And I'm definitely
- 40:06Speaker 6: all in on Heat Too. And I'm you know that
- 40:09Speaker 6: whole film is premised on De Niro versus Paccino, and
- 40:12Speaker 6: of course those two guys are incredible in it. But
- 40:14Speaker 6: I mean Kilmer is sort of like he's that key,
- 40:18Speaker 6: key role player on that team, right, great as well,
- 40:23Speaker 6: size More, Ashley Judd, even Hank Azaria.
- 40:28Speaker 2: I should have got mixed up with that bitch. Well,
- 40:30Speaker 2: she's got a Chris and you got your head all
- 40:34Speaker 2: the way up it. I love that.
- 40:37Speaker 6: I set that up just so you could say that line.
- 40:39Speaker 2: I appreciate. I love love that. I love Kilmer.
- 40:43Speaker 4: You know, rest in peace.
- 40:44Speaker 6: Incredible, very unique career for a very unique leading man
- 40:48Speaker 6: in Hollywood history.
- 40:49Speaker 1: That's a good call a unique look to him named
- 40:51Speaker 1: Val Kilbury. He did have a very kind of zigging,
- 40:53Speaker 1: zagging career. There's there's some bombs along the way. You know,
- 40:55Speaker 1: he kind of spoiled his talent at times. The Saint
- 40:57Speaker 1: was exactly a great film, but even even as Batman,
- 41:01Speaker 1: he wasn't a quintessential Batman. People always talk about Michael
- 41:03Speaker 1: Katon or Christian Bale, but he was Batman. Rest in
- 41:05Speaker 1: peace to Vl Kilmore. Before we get to Corey Schneider,
- 41:08Speaker 1: we got to talk with the Sam Rockwell monologue The
- 41:10Speaker 1: White Lotus. I don't watch The White Loatus, and everyone's like,
- 41:12Speaker 1: did you see this Rockwell monologue? I love slam Rockwell,
- 41:14Speaker 1: like I'm in. It is absolutely unbelievable, him talking about
- 41:17Speaker 1: the fact he's now become a Buddhist, but he's just
- 41:20Speaker 1: he was basically a sex addict, and we wanted to
- 41:22Speaker 1: be able to trans woman.
- 41:25Speaker 3: My wife's been selling me on it for two and
- 41:27Speaker 3: a half seasons, and I said, I'll just jump in.
- 41:29Speaker 3: You know, I got some time. And first scene I
- 41:31Speaker 3: jump in is just an incest scene.
- 41:33Speaker 4: And then the.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Goggins or the guy. I watched the Goggins monologu, which
- 41:37Speaker 3: I thought is incredible. I love Sam Rockwell and Walton
- 41:41Speaker 3: Goggins are two of my favorite actors. I mean Walt
- 41:44Speaker 3: Goggins and anything he's doing, Vice Principles, all those things.
- 41:46Speaker 3: I think he's so funny. Sam Rockwell too, is just
- 41:51Speaker 3: great and everything he does and plays his characters so well.
- 41:55Speaker 3: So I love that monologue. But yeah, I came in
- 41:58Speaker 3: on the incest scene and I went, oh, yeah, makes sense.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 42:01Speaker 3: I said, just right into it, just sex else. But
- 42:04Speaker 3: this is what happens when you push the line and
- 42:06Speaker 3: all of a sudden incest is normal. And then we're
- 42:08Speaker 3: all talking about anyway.
- 42:10Speaker 1: How about a show GD that you're passionate about a
- 42:12Speaker 1: lot of people love it, Severance Ben's Stiller course directing it.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Adam Scott did really well.
- 42:16Speaker 1: The Emmy's critically acclaimed you really enjoyed season two tow
- 42:20Speaker 1: not so much, but go ahead.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I just I love the It gets you thinking,
- 42:24Speaker 4: it makes you think.
- 42:24Speaker 3: It's very similar to life of a lot of people
- 42:27Speaker 3: talking about you going to work, just separated.
- 42:30Speaker 4: It's people.
- 42:30Speaker 3: It's just two different people, your work life and your
- 42:32Speaker 3: home life. And they really take it to another level.
- 42:35Speaker 4: Now. I don't know where they're gonna.
- 42:36Speaker 3: Go that passed here with the goats and everything and
- 42:39Speaker 3: all that shit, but I thought it was.
- 42:40Speaker 4: I really enjoyed it. I really like it.
- 42:42Speaker 3: It's thought provoking and it's it's your thinking of what
- 42:46Speaker 3: the hell is going on? And that's kind of more
- 42:48Speaker 3: my My style is more of the intelligent shows versus
- 42:53Speaker 3: just the sex cells, which is more you guys.
- 42:54Speaker 1: But hey, hey, I've always loved Turro tell those ever
- 42:57Speaker 1: since Barton Fink. How great is to Turu in severs
- 42:59Speaker 1: I mean it isn't like a huge homo him and Christopher.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Waher, Oh, him and Christopher walk And when you listen
- 43:03Speaker 3: to tu talk about it. He's like, when he did
- 43:07Speaker 3: this scene and he had to do these relationships, he said,
- 43:09Speaker 3: I can only do it with Christopher walk who was
- 43:12Speaker 3: a good friend of mine. He's like, I want to
- 43:13Speaker 3: do it with somebody that I'm comfortable with. And I
- 43:16Speaker 3: love it. It's so great.
- 43:18Speaker 2: But is it explicit like I've been saying, no.
- 43:20Speaker 4: No, no, not at all. No.
- 43:21Speaker 3: It's like they just that's they tease it the whole time.
- 43:24Speaker 3: There's like they build an intensity between the both of
- 43:27Speaker 3: them the whole time that there's this love story.
- 43:29Speaker 4: You stop, but.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Tell you know it's an overrated show. I mean nineteen
- 43:32Speaker 1: hours of Severance and mean, I got it. There's there's
- 43:34Speaker 1: a work life, there's a personal life. Okay, nineteen hours
- 43:36Speaker 1: this come on.
- 43:38Speaker 4: I love the premise.
- 43:39Speaker 2: The cast is awesome.
- 43:40Speaker 6: It's a it makes me feel dumb because I'm always
- 43:42Speaker 6: confused watching this thing and then the i'll I'll say
- 43:45Speaker 6: is this It makes me feel like, do you remember
- 43:48Speaker 6: a while back someone taped a banana to the wall
- 43:50Speaker 6: and they called it art and someone bought it for
- 43:52Speaker 6: like millions of dollars.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's people looking at this.
- 43:56Speaker 6: Is anyone else just seeing a banana tape to the wall.
- 43:58Speaker 2: I kind of felt that's.
- 44:00Speaker 6: Kind of how I felt a little bit watching Severance.
- 44:02Speaker 6: It's a quality show, but that's just that's the analogy.
- 44:06Speaker 3: I'm going to say a great takedown. Go ahead, that
- 44:08Speaker 3: is great. It's been ana on the wall. But let's
- 44:10Speaker 3: let's switch gears quickly. Talk about the studio. I loved listen, Yes, incredible.
- 44:15Speaker 2: In the first episode, He's gotta win an Emmy, he
- 44:16Speaker 2: was unbelievable.
- 44:17Speaker 1: They're trying to bankroll a film about kool Aid, and
- 44:19Speaker 1: so you know they're willing to give Scarsese towo a
- 44:20Speaker 1: million dollars. He'said, well, I was just going to make
- 44:22Speaker 1: a movie with a jonestown massacre. And he's like, wait,
- 44:24Speaker 1: you mean when they drank the kolid He's a yeah,
- 44:25Speaker 1: I mean, I will tell you no further, but just
- 44:27Speaker 1: to say, Scarcese's unbelievable.
- 44:29Speaker 2: In the two him crying it's fucked.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Up, Steve Busumi going oh yeah, is that? He goes,
- 44:35Speaker 4: is that scarczy? Are you crying?
- 44:37Speaker 1: And he goes if biskem or is at BIESHEMI even
- 44:39Speaker 1: started debating how to say his name. It's a lot
- 44:41Speaker 1: of inside Hollywood chatterick again. I adored the Larry Sanders shows.
- 44:43Speaker 1: If you like shows about shows, if you love let's
- 44:45Speaker 1: say Tropic Thunder, which is about filmmaking, and you know,
- 44:47Speaker 1: a movie about movie making, you'll definitely enjoy the studio,
- 44:50Speaker 1: all right, Corey Stanner. He also can talk Seinfeld and
- 44:52Speaker 1: talk about goalies here he is coming up our next guest,
- 45:02Speaker 1: twenty six overall pick by the Vancouver Canocks two thousand
- 45:05Speaker 1: and four NHL Draft. You'd go into play more than
- 45:07Speaker 1: four hundred games to the Canuckston Jersey Devils in New
- 45:09Speaker 1: York Islanders. Now seen regularly with our friend Jason Dar's
- 45:13Speaker 1: NHL network Corey Schneider, I Believe three Straight Shifts and
- 45:15Speaker 1: HL Netwick and Joint seeing you guys in NHL now,
- 45:18Speaker 1: and also has the podcast One Time All Starts with
- 45:20Speaker 1: Brian Boyle. Schneid's great to see you. Thank you so
- 45:23Speaker 1: much for giving us the time. I know you're probably
- 45:25Speaker 1: tired of JD at this point, but appreciate the effort.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Let's get to the hockey. Then we'll get to the
- 45:29Speaker 1: Gofi LIBP later on. I do want to talk Seinfeld
- 45:31Speaker 1: with you. I want to talk to passions your Lambo impression.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Connor Hallibuck Heart Trophy. JD made the case earlier, Koutrovneck
- 45:37Speaker 1: get nearly enough Love for the Heart. A lot of
- 45:40Speaker 1: conversation McKinnon, drive us out, et cetera. How about you
- 45:42Speaker 1: do you think Connor Hallibuck should be the favorite for
- 45:45Speaker 1: the Heart. I mean, he is the vetting favorite, which
- 45:47Speaker 1: surprised me a little bit. But when you think about
- 45:48Speaker 1: it and actually kind of take a deep dive, which
- 45:50Speaker 1: our researchers did. I don't know that we did, but
- 45:53Speaker 1: you know, the last school to win it was Kerry Price,
- 45:55Speaker 1: so he sort of that's that's the standard you have
- 45:57Speaker 1: to set if you're gonna win it.
- 45:58Speaker 5: It's kind of like a.
- 45:59Speaker 8: Pitcher winning the MVP and baseball, like you have to
- 46:02Speaker 8: hit a certain benchmarker or a certain press. And so,
- 46:05Speaker 8: I mean, he's first in every major category, wins, save, percentage,
- 46:08Speaker 8: goals against, the advanced analytics, the expected goals against, goals
- 46:11Speaker 8: saved above average, like across the board. You know, unanimous
- 46:14Speaker 8: number one guy. He might win forty five, forty six games,
- 46:17Speaker 8: best team in the league potentially. So you look at
- 46:20Speaker 8: that resume and you take the name away or you
- 46:21Speaker 8: say that's Carry Price in twenty fifteen or whatever it was,
- 46:24Speaker 8: and he'd be like, yeah, I mean, I don't know
- 46:27Speaker 8: if Kutrov, Dry Sidle and McKinnon sort of split the
- 46:29Speaker 8: vote a little bit where it's like, I can't pick
- 46:31Speaker 8: one of these three guys because they've all been so good,
- 46:34Speaker 8: but they're also not the levels they were last year
- 46:35Speaker 8: when they had one hundred and forty points and they
- 46:37Speaker 8: won the MVP. M ckinnon did and Kutrov should have,
- 46:39Speaker 8: right JD. So he got rough. So I mean, you
- 46:43Speaker 8: could make a compelling argument that you know, Hella Buck
- 46:45Speaker 8: is the most viable player in the league, but I don't.
- 46:48Speaker 8: For some reason, I was saying, I don't think he
- 46:50Speaker 8: gets the buzz that Carry Price did. Like when Carry
- 46:52Speaker 8: Price was having that year, it was like, oh my god,
- 46:54Speaker 8: look what Kerry Price is doing. He is the Montreal Canadians,
- 46:56Speaker 8: and then where would they be without him? And this year,
- 46:59Speaker 8: you know, Connor Hellbuck's a huge part of that team,
- 47:01Speaker 8: but they're pretty good team otherwise. So I don't know
- 47:03Speaker 8: if he's getting the same kind of buzz and love
- 47:05Speaker 8: which can go into a can factor and when people vote.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I want I want to shop It was crazy too,
- 47:11Speaker 3: because we're on that show and we're both like, no,
- 47:13Speaker 3: it's like coot or stry title. And then they started
- 47:16Speaker 3: throwing all the stats. We're just mid show. We're like
- 47:18Speaker 3: looking at the other We're like, oh, maybe he should
- 47:20Speaker 3: win this. Actually this is pretty smart. The eye test
- 47:23Speaker 3: sometimes doesn't work. But I want to shift to uh,
- 47:26Speaker 3: your alma mater CA, the BC BC College, Boston College.
- 47:33Speaker 3: I want to hear your thoughts on the Ryan Leonard's
- 47:36Speaker 3: performance last night, and then also some other guys that
- 47:39Speaker 3: are getting there starts and Gabe Parole of who you're
- 47:42Speaker 3: most excited to kind of see and see grow. Because
- 47:45Speaker 3: I'm just working with you for three days, let alone
- 47:49Speaker 3: two years. I know how closely you watch and how
- 47:51Speaker 3: tied in you are with BC.
- 47:52Speaker 8: Yeah, I thought Leonard was okay last night. I mean,
- 47:55Speaker 8: your hometown basically is from Massachusetts, played down the road
- 47:58Speaker 8: at BC. As you mentioned, playing in the garden in
- 48:00Speaker 8: your first game with the veatchkin and all the hypes
- 48:02Speaker 8: surrounding him, Like, that's a pretty overwhelming environment. It's almost
- 48:05Speaker 8: like jumping into a playoff game. So I mean I
- 48:07Speaker 8: thought for his first game he was fine. You know,
- 48:09Speaker 8: he didn't do a ton, wasn't as noticeable as you
- 48:12Speaker 8: might think. I think this year it's I think you
- 48:14Speaker 8: have to temper your expectations for these kids when they're
- 48:16Speaker 8: jumping in into a playoff push for you know, whether
- 48:18Speaker 8: it's Snugruot in Saint Louis or Perrot in New York
- 48:21Speaker 8: or Leonard with Washington, like, you're joining well established teams
- 48:25Speaker 8: that are are kind of humming along. So I mean,
- 48:27Speaker 8: if anything they can add, it's gravy at this point.
- 48:29Speaker 8: But I don't know if they're gonna have the impact
- 48:31Speaker 8: of like a macar or a Charlie McAvoy or Chris
- 48:33Speaker 8: Kreider did when they jumped out of college and basically
- 48:36Speaker 8: hop right into the playoffs and didn't miss a beat.
- 48:38Speaker 8: So you know, Leonard's a fantastic player. He's more of
- 48:41Speaker 8: a playmaker, you know, So I don't know if that
- 48:43Speaker 8: takes longer to adjust than just shooting the puck and scoring.
- 48:47Speaker 8: But again, you know, it'll take time. It'll take him
- 48:48Speaker 8: a few games. And if he can get these eight
- 48:50Speaker 8: games in and they find he can be valuable in
- 48:52Speaker 8: the playoffs, I think that's that's a good thing for
- 48:53Speaker 8: the Capitals. Just to assass and see, I can this
- 48:56Speaker 8: kild actually contribute in the playoffs when we need him
- 48:58Speaker 8: the most, or does he still need to learn? And
- 49:00Speaker 8: he's a bit of a liability, so we got to
- 49:01Speaker 8: sort of shelter him or maybe not play him in
- 49:03Speaker 8: the playoffs and the games matter the moment, Cory, I want.
- 49:05Speaker 1: To ask you about, well, we got two options or
- 49:08Speaker 1: to to lose. We'll get to lu Ango in a second.
- 49:09Speaker 1: I'll ask you about Lou Lamarello, who treated to bring
- 49:12Speaker 1: me to New Jersey now or brought you over to
- 49:14Speaker 1: the Islanders. I get to work with Thomas Hickey. He's
- 49:16Speaker 1: got great Lou Lamorello stories. I want to hear your
- 49:18Speaker 1: take on Lou because he clearly could have been a
- 49:20Speaker 1: character in the Sopranos, not.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Just because he's in talent, but also that steely eyed
- 49:23Speaker 2: gaze of.
- 49:23Speaker 8: His Yeah, Lou's, like you said, he's almost larger than life,
- 49:27Speaker 8: even though he's not that big of a guy. You know,
- 49:30Speaker 8: he's he's done great things for me. He's treated me
- 49:33Speaker 8: incredibly well. You know, Andy Green and I were sort
- 49:36Speaker 8: of sitting there doing the math, and Andy said that
- 49:38Speaker 8: every contract he signed his whole career was with Lou
- 49:40Speaker 8: Lamarillo between the Devils and the Islanders and from Yeah
- 49:43Speaker 8: and Me from twenty thirteen to twenty twenty three. I
- 49:46Speaker 8: was signed by Lou Lamarillo, so he's always taken care
- 49:50Speaker 8: of me and my family. So I always think I'm
- 49:52Speaker 8: inna appreciate him for that. You know, he's not for everybody,
- 49:55Speaker 8: I'll put it that way. He expects things a certain way,
- 49:57Speaker 8: he demands certain things. He's fair, he's honest, but you know,
- 50:01Speaker 8: if you don't fall in line or you're not with
- 50:02Speaker 8: the program, then and then he's not for you, and
- 50:05Speaker 8: you're probably not for him. So you know, I'm sure
- 50:07Speaker 8: there's horror stories. I think he's obviously changed with the
- 50:09Speaker 8: times since it's not nineteen ninety five anymore. It's twenty
- 50:12Speaker 8: twenty five, so you can't do or treat the guys
- 50:15Speaker 8: the way you probably could back then. And not that
- 50:17Speaker 8: he was unfair, but you know, he was a hard edged,
- 50:19Speaker 8: demanding guy, and he was around all the time, even
- 50:21Speaker 8: though his general manager. The one thing I've known from
- 50:23Speaker 8: him is I've never seen a GM more present than
- 50:25Speaker 8: he is. And I think that I don't want to
- 50:27Speaker 8: say fear, but that knowing that Luke could be around
- 50:30Speaker 8: the corner at any moment. Keeps guys in line a little bit.
- 50:32Speaker 8: You know, you walk around on eggshells a little bit
- 50:33Speaker 8: because you're like, oh, lou might be listening, or you
- 50:35Speaker 8: might hear this if you're sort of complaining or doing
- 50:37Speaker 8: what you do as a player. So, like I said,
- 50:39Speaker 8: he expects a certain thing, but he's not unfair. He'll
- 50:42Speaker 8: tell you exactly what he thinks. And some guys like
- 50:44Speaker 8: that because you know where you stand, and other guys
- 50:46Speaker 8: don't like that because they don't want to hear the
- 50:47Speaker 8: truth sometimes. But yeah, I mean, I know guys who
- 50:50Speaker 8: I played with, Scott Gomez and at the end of
- 50:52Speaker 8: his career, and he said, when I hit Hackomer, he's like,
- 50:55Speaker 8: when I left The Devil's the first time I hated
- 50:57Speaker 8: lou Or I was like, I'm done with this guy.
- 50:58Speaker 8: And then he left and he's like, man, I didn't
- 51:00Speaker 8: realize how much I needed that structure and that discipline
- 51:03Speaker 8: in that, you know, because he kind of got left
- 51:04Speaker 8: up to his own devices and it didn't go as
- 51:06Speaker 8: well for him. So when he came back, he's like,
- 51:08Speaker 8: you don't really realize it, but he does. He takes
- 51:10Speaker 8: a lot off your plate in terms of distractions and
- 51:12Speaker 8: things you got to think about. You just got to
- 51:14Speaker 8: focus on hockey. And I think sometimes you don't realize
- 51:16Speaker 8: that until you go somewhere else and you're like, man,
- 51:17Speaker 8: this is a this is a bit of a bleep
- 51:19Speaker 8: show here, like there's no control or rhyme or reason,
- 51:21Speaker 8: like you know, I missed that that structure and knowing
- 51:23Speaker 8: exactly what to do.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Can you imagine a the g love You gotta give
- 51:29Speaker 3: me your what's your best Scotti gom story you got
- 51:32Speaker 3: because he the fact that he was as successful under
- 51:35Speaker 3: Lou La Morello probably shows you that it can work
- 51:38Speaker 3: having a verbose personality and being around lou.
- 51:41Speaker 8: The best story Gohmer told me was when they were
- 51:44Speaker 8: actually in the island. They were on the island at
- 51:46Speaker 8: NASA playing for the Devils, and the kiss cam was
- 51:48Speaker 8: showing the crowd and they showed him and like another
- 51:51Speaker 8: guy in the bench. So Gomer was like, oh, I
- 51:53Speaker 8: just leaned over and pretend to kiss the guy on
- 51:54Speaker 8: the bench, just as a joke, like during the commercial break.
- 51:57Speaker 8: And he said, on the way to the bus, like
- 51:58Speaker 8: going down the hall, lou started to chasing him down the.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Hall is that.
- 52:01Speaker 8: That's the most disrespectful thing I've ever seen, Like, how
- 52:03Speaker 8: could you do that to the you're supposed to be
- 52:05Speaker 8: playing the game. And Gomer started giving it to him back,
- 52:07Speaker 8: like just like screw you, Lou, like I'll do what
- 52:09Speaker 8: I want. And then Luke came after him. He just
- 52:10Speaker 8: ran him on the bus and like hit on the bus.
- 52:12Speaker 8: So they just got like a screaming match, and Goomer
- 52:15Speaker 8: just when he started coming at him, just ran and
- 52:16Speaker 8: hit on the bus and he's like, you can't get
- 52:17Speaker 8: me here. So uh yeah, that's just showing you that
- 52:20Speaker 8: personality that sometimes doesn't go so well.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Luke can be Farosa's no question about it.
- 52:25Speaker 1: All right, let's get to the other lou then, Roberto Lawongo,
- 52:27Speaker 1: you'll always be associated with him in Vancouver.
- 52:29Speaker 2: What do you got on Louis?
- 52:31Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean we still stay in touch to this day.
- 52:33Speaker 8: We're in a fantasy football league together. He's a he's
- 52:35Speaker 8: a maniac with that stuff. He's like my safe, he's
- 52:38Speaker 8: like my sage when it comes to fantasy. I'm like, hey,
- 52:40Speaker 8: should I take this guy third or fourth? He's like no, no,
- 52:42Speaker 8: you want to wait on him? Like okay, cool, but yeah,
- 52:44Speaker 8: it's with a bunch of like ex Florida Panthers like
- 52:46Speaker 8: Peter Warrel and Rob Niedermeyer and just like the old
- 52:49Speaker 8: trainers from the nineties, kick your ass.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Oh he would. That's what I mean.
- 52:53Speaker 8: That's why I'm a little nervous in that league. But no,
- 52:56Speaker 8: he We've had a good relationship, you know, he's uh.
- 52:59Speaker 8: We went out to Vancouver for his Ring of Honor
- 53:01Speaker 8: ceremony last year and got to catch up with him
- 53:04Speaker 8: and see his family and his kids, who were you know,
- 53:06Speaker 8: were like grown people now. But no, we always had
- 53:09Speaker 8: a great working relationship. He helped me out so much
- 53:11Speaker 8: in my career coming in the league, and you know,
- 53:13Speaker 8: I thought I knew how to work hard and how
- 53:15Speaker 8: to compete and what it took to be the guy.
- 53:17Speaker 8: And then I showed up that first full year in
- 53:19Speaker 8: Vancouver and I watched him for like two minutes like, oh,
- 53:21Speaker 8: that's that's what that is. So I just kind of
- 53:24Speaker 8: followed him around like a puppy dog, and whether he
- 53:26Speaker 8: knew it or not, I just watched what he did.
- 53:28Speaker 8: I took a lot of little cues and equipment things
- 53:30Speaker 8: from him, and you know, he wasn't sitting there just
- 53:33Speaker 8: reigning wisdom on me. But if I had a question,
- 53:35Speaker 8: he was more than happy to help out an answer.
- 53:36Speaker 8: And you know, I know, the whole story in Vancouver
- 53:39Speaker 8: got took kind of life of its own. But he
- 53:41Speaker 8: and I were always good where we were always cool,
- 53:43Speaker 8: We respected each other. Guy's a Hall of Famer now,
- 53:46Speaker 8: and you know I was always I would always go
- 53:48Speaker 8: to bat for him there standing in his corner because
- 53:49Speaker 8: he's a tremendous human And like I said, it's great
- 53:52Speaker 8: to see him finally win a Cup with Florida. Maybe
- 53:54Speaker 8: not as a player, but uh, you know again, he's
- 53:56Speaker 8: always somebody who will who meant a lot to me
- 53:58Speaker 8: in my career.
- 53:59Speaker 2: I was just I heard your huge Seinfeld. Guys.
- 54:01Speaker 1: I want to ask you, is is the contest the
- 54:03Speaker 1: greatest Sininefold episode, which I believe it.
- 54:05Speaker 8: Is, Uh you do you know it's I'd have to
- 54:08Speaker 8: go back and rewatch a bunch and we had him
- 54:10Speaker 8: on like over the over the winter we were up
- 54:12Speaker 8: at our cabin. We just kind of throw it on
- 54:14Speaker 8: the background and there was something that was so funny,
- 54:16Speaker 8: like just ones you forget about that, you just the
- 54:18Speaker 8: moments and the scenes. The contest is one of the
- 54:21Speaker 8: all time greats. I'm just trying to think of somebout
- 54:24Speaker 8: like I still love the one where Costanzo, like his
- 54:27Speaker 8: his coworker at the Yankees thinks he's trying to get
- 54:29Speaker 8: him fire because he keeps doing things like getting the
- 54:31Speaker 8: cards signed without him and he's like, he screwed me again, Costanza,
- 54:34Speaker 8: you know, like, well, you know, like I think that
- 54:36Speaker 8: one's awesome. Yeah, anything involving Krammer, like the Kenny Rodgers episodes,
- 54:41Speaker 8: Terri terrific with the red light.
- 54:43Speaker 2: In his bedroom.
- 54:44Speaker 8: So chicken, yeah, Kenny Rogers chicken broccoli. Yeah, he's all sunburned.
- 54:52Speaker 8: So I mean, you know, we could go all day
- 54:54Speaker 8: on that. But I am I mean this might be controversial,
- 54:56Speaker 8: but I am like so out on Friends, Like I
- 54:58Speaker 8: never watch Friends. I just think that I always thought
- 55:02Speaker 8: Friends was a less funny version of sein film. It's like, well,
- 55:05Speaker 8: it's a bunch of friends in New York City getting
- 55:07Speaker 8: together in their day to day shenanigans, and I'm like,
- 55:09Speaker 8: Seinfeld just did it better.
- 55:10Speaker 2: So I'm gonna watch Seinfelden shines. This is awesome.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Man, can't think you love See NHL Network and thanks
