Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's up, everybody, It's Jeff
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mosher Adam Kaplan and we are going to finish in
- 0:18Speaker 1: this podcast a two part series that we've been doing.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We call it the Eagles to Do List. We went
- 0:24Speaker 1: through offense and this podcast will go through defense. What
- 0:27Speaker 1: it really is is what did the Eagles have to
- 0:29Speaker 1: figure out? As there's a lot of changing dynamics going
- 0:32Speaker 1: on and you've got free agency in the draft that'll
- 0:34Speaker 1: be all right around the corner. Free agency and now
- 0:37Speaker 1: less than a month away. What did the Eagles need
- 0:39Speaker 1: to figure out in between now and then. We did offense,
- 0:42Speaker 1: we'll do defense in this podcast. But Adam, we'd be
- 0:45Speaker 1: remiss if we didn't, you know, mention the news surrounding
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Eagles and it's becoming somewhat of a Philadelphia theme.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Kevin Battulo, we'll go to Miami. He will join the
- 0:56Speaker 1: Miami Dolphins staff as their pass game coordinator. Of the
- 1:00Speaker 1: oddest of odd things, and it's been an odd off season,
- 1:03Speaker 1: he's going to wind up coaching with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowick,
- 1:07Speaker 1: who is interviewing in Philadelphia to replace him. If that
- 1:11Speaker 1: doesn't show you how weirdly ancestral the NFL as nothing does.
- 1:15Speaker 1: But I know that fans at him were really down
- 1:18Speaker 1: on Petullo and obviously so he did not do a
- 1:21Speaker 1: good job as a play caller.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But he's been with.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Nick Siriani from the start since Nick Sirianni was hired.
- 1:27Speaker 1: He was the past game coordinator when they won a
- 1:29Speaker 1: Super Bowl and went to another. So, you know, Nick,
- 1:33Speaker 1: for Kevin Bittulo, it's not all bad for the fans,
- 1:36Speaker 1: it is, but for Kevin Bittullo it's really one bad
- 1:39Speaker 1: year as OC kind of dampened what had been for
- 1:42Speaker 1: him at least a pretty good career. But he is
- 1:44Speaker 1: now out the door and with another team.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, so you know he was not only with
- 1:50Speaker 3: Nick here, but he's with him in Indy.
- 1:53Speaker 2: YEP.
- 1:54Speaker 3: That was basically his first hire because they're very close.
- 1:56Speaker 3: He was his chief of staff. He did a lot
- 1:58Speaker 3: of administrative stuff behind the seats were told, in addition
- 2:01Speaker 3: to helping with the past game concepts and they want
- 2:06Speaker 3: a Super Bowl together. But it was mostly a disaster
- 2:09Speaker 3: last season with the past game and then you see
- 2:11Speaker 3: what happened to playoffs. Holy smokes, that was bad.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Not mostly it was.
- 2:14Speaker 1: It was all well, I guess if you want to
- 2:16Speaker 1: take the red zone and call that the one possible.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's I said, mostly disaster. The past game
- 2:22Speaker 3: was mostly awful, but the red zone, if they could
- 2:26Speaker 3: get down there, they were really good. They were they
- 2:28Speaker 3: were super efficient. They were the best team in the
- 2:30Speaker 3: red zone when they got there. But that was the problem.
- 2:33Speaker 3: So yeah, he was on. Good for him to get
- 2:34Speaker 3: a job in Miami where they're they boy, they have
- 2:37Speaker 3: a bad roster. They're they're kind of they got a
- 2:40Speaker 3: new GM they have. I'm interested to see what that
- 2:45Speaker 3: thing's going to look like on both sides of the football.
- 2:47Speaker 3: These things are obviously going to change. You mentioned Bobby
- 2:49Speaker 3: slow Coole bringing his shanahann Ish offense. But getting back
- 2:54Speaker 3: to the Eagles, it's gonna be fashionating offseason because there
- 2:58Speaker 3: are so many questions. Well, in a future show, well
- 3:02Speaker 3: before free agency, we'll get to the off season questions.
- 3:05Speaker 3: But this to do list is the early to do list.
- 3:07Speaker 3: They this is the way teams think like this. I
- 3:10Speaker 3: took this from a friend of mine as a coach
- 3:12Speaker 3: because I was talking about what I asked him, like,
- 3:14Speaker 3: what's going on with this? That? And the other goes well,
- 3:16Speaker 3: that's on our list. We're gonna we're gonna address that early.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm like, aha, ah, yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 3: That's these shows.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So so if I can just widen the lens real quick,
- 3:25Speaker 1: because you know, sometimes we like to take a bigger
- 3:27Speaker 1: look at Philadelphia Sports, especially at this moment in the offseason,
- 3:31Speaker 1: to think that within I don't know, within the same week,
- 3:34Speaker 1: but also even bigger than that, like the contributors to
- 3:39Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports all right, like Nick Castianos, say what you
- 3:42Speaker 1: want about him in the year that he had, but
- 3:44Speaker 1: he gets released finally by the Phillies on Thursday. I mean,
- 3:47Speaker 1: he did have one terrific postseason run where he had
- 3:50Speaker 1: those six home runs. I know he was divisive in
- 3:53Speaker 1: a way, or people looked at him. Some people thought
- 3:55Speaker 1: he was arrogant and smug. Others loved his kind of brashness.
- 3:59Speaker 1: But he's gone from a team that made the playoffs
- 4:03Speaker 1: one last two and at least right Jeff Stoutlin gone.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Kevin Patullo, who is again.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Part of all the success that Eagles have. He's been
- 4:10Speaker 1: on the staffs insolvement.
- 4:12Speaker 2: He's gone.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Jared McCain, who I personally from the sixers, I had
- 4:17Speaker 1: hope for even as he was struggling to come back
- 4:19Speaker 1: from the the meniscus and the thumb injuries, I thought
- 4:21Speaker 1: he was just starting to get his legs under him.
- 4:23Speaker 2: He's gone.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's sort of like a weird winter
- 4:27Speaker 1: so far for Philadelphia sports of guys who are just
- 4:30Speaker 1: leaving that you either had hoped for or had some
- 4:33Speaker 1: significant contributions to a good team.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Yeah. And see what happened with McCain was he got
- 4:40Speaker 3: you surfed by Edgecomb and.
- 4:42Speaker 2: You know, but you can have three guards. I feel
- 4:44Speaker 2: like that, well.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Well, the problem is the problem is that Grimes is
- 4:48Speaker 3: playing over Rymes. Yeah, and you know you're you're Grimes
- 4:52Speaker 3: is a scorer. But what I hate is they trade
- 4:55Speaker 3: him to the NBA champion, right, okay, Ses, and he's
- 5:02Speaker 3: actually the other game. I was watching some highlights. I
- 5:05Speaker 3: was like, wow, he really looks good. So and that's
- 5:07Speaker 3: the greatest fear is we we turn them back to
- 5:08Speaker 3: the Eagles or an NFL team.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 3: The greatest fear is when you trade away the guy
- 5:13Speaker 3: who's or or you just a guy just it was
- 5:19Speaker 3: so obviously he could help you. Josh Joe be an example,
- 5:21Speaker 3: Josh Shob did nothing here. We've talked about this before,
- 5:24Speaker 3: like there was no reason to think he'd ever become
- 5:26Speaker 3: a player.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, good special teamer though, but you're right, yeah, nothing.
- 5:29Speaker 3: He was a fifth corner. He had no role in defense.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Zero he had one and then he lost it right
- 5:33Speaker 3: and they cut and then all of a sudden last
- 5:36Speaker 3: year we're talking about this. We're like, this might be
- 5:40Speaker 3: the biggest surprise of the season for like any team.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Josh shob is actually starting for the Seahawks. It's not
- 5:44Speaker 3: because of injury. Now, they weren't deep enough. And then
- 5:48Speaker 3: you know Witherspoon, you know he plays inside and nickel,
- 5:51Speaker 3: but he could play outside. And then Jo Job and
- 5:55Speaker 3: Treaq Wollen, you know, they all three of them play.
- 5:57Speaker 3: But nevertheless, Yeah, it's just look, I have no problem
- 6:01Speaker 3: with it when the guy shows absolutely nothing, fine, But
- 6:04Speaker 3: when a guy shows something inconsistent, then he goes and
- 6:06Speaker 3: becomes a really good player, You go, man, what do
- 6:08Speaker 3: we miss? What do we missing? The coaching part of it.
- 6:11Speaker 3: And that's that's what two general managers hate when guys
- 6:14Speaker 3: that they cut wave when trade because they just didn't
- 6:18Speaker 3: see it and they become a player.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Now, job's gonna be a free agent.
- 6:21Speaker 1: What do we always say in the free agent follow
- 6:24Speaker 1: the coaching tree, right? Yeah, Christian Parker is now the
- 6:28Speaker 1: defensive coordinator for the Cowboys. I know already people are wondering,
- 6:32Speaker 1: is Red Blanket Ship who is a free.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Agent gonna wind up in Dallas?
- 6:35Speaker 1: Kobe Job gonna wind up in Dallas under Christian Parker?
- 6:40Speaker 2: And is that gonna haunt the Eagles fans going forward?
- 6:42Speaker 2: Who knows? But listen, you got Cooper to gen and
- 6:45Speaker 2: you got quin Yon Mitchell and.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Obviously they were able to get as far as they
- 6:49Speaker 1: did with a Dori Jackson, So we'll see. But yeah,
- 6:53Speaker 1: that's always the concern that you let somebody go and
- 6:55Speaker 1: they wind up becoming something that you didn't foresee.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I just want to have this when whether it's offensive
- 7:01Speaker 3: defense coordinator, they want to bring their guys in, it's
- 7:05Speaker 3: pretty much a lock he's going to get at least
- 7:07Speaker 3: one player Christian Parker that he's coached before, or he's
- 7:12Speaker 3: who was on the defensive staff when he was there.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I mean he was he was on the play defense
- 7:16Speaker 3: for them when Christian was a part of Vic Fancier
- 7:19Speaker 3: staff or or before that, so just or wherever he
- 7:24Speaker 3: was before Denver? Was he? What was park Park was
- 7:28Speaker 3: with Denver before he? Right?
- 7:29Speaker 2: He was Denver right?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Right? Someone they want their guys, yea, whether it's Ni Kobe,
- 7:36Speaker 3: Dean Blanket Ship obviously knows Blankshire really well as he
- 7:40Speaker 3: coached them. You mentioned Josh Show. But it's going to
- 7:43Speaker 3: be something at least one player. It just it rarely
- 7:45Speaker 3: doesn't happen.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yep, didn't.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Didn't Gannon bring in a couple of guys that were
- 7:50Speaker 1: from Minnesota his first year with the Eric Wilson Oops,
- 7:55Speaker 1: didn't Epps was?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Wasn't he?
- 7:58Speaker 3: Did they him off Waivers?
- 8:00Speaker 1: I think it did from the Vikings where he was
- 8:02Speaker 1: playing under Zimmer and there was a lot of z
- 8:04Speaker 1: because he had coached with Zimmer at one point Gan
- 8:07Speaker 1: and did he not before going to Indianapol. I thought
- 8:09Speaker 1: that there was a Zimmer or Minnesota connection with Gan.
- 8:12Speaker 3: He might have been I don't recall.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah, but either way, Yeah, you're right.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Eric Wilson, that's right, who was still playing well as well,
- 8:19Speaker 1: started for he was.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Starting for Green Bay. Yeah, he was actually Marcus SAPs
- 8:26Speaker 3: was It's interesting when you look at his career. Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 3: Eagles did claim him in November of twenty nineteen, and
- 8:36Speaker 3: you know he went to the Raiders on that big
- 8:37Speaker 3: deal towards ACL went to New England. It didn't work
- 8:40Speaker 3: out at all. They cut him before that. They saw
- 8:43Speaker 3: him in March of last year. Then they cut him
- 8:45Speaker 3: and then we you know, we were we were a
- 8:47Speaker 3: wondering when he came here would it be healthy enough
- 8:48Speaker 3: to play? He was and having to start a little
- 8:51Speaker 3: bit right.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And you remember the immortal Andre Shasherat who was with
- 8:56Speaker 1: the Colts in twenty twenty and then came to the
- 9:00Speaker 1: Eagles in twenty twenty one.
- 9:01Speaker 2: You remember him, right, the defensive back.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Ye, he was a special teamer, like a force safety.
- 9:05Speaker 3: They want to They went with Gat into Arizona. I
- 9:08Speaker 3: think he's out of the league. I don't think he's
- 9:09Speaker 3: still playing, is he?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah? No, I think he's actly. But he came to
- 9:12Speaker 2: the Yeah, that's the guy. Yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And didn't Gannon bring Kaizier White to Arizona when he
- 9:17Speaker 1: became the head coach.
- 9:18Speaker 3: He sure did. And he brought the enforcer. Who's the
- 9:20Speaker 3: receiver that was rocked up? It was Eagles four.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Oh oh my god, his name is escaping me.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I want to say Zach but that's not right. What's Pascal?
- 9:29Speaker 3: You got it?
- 9:30Speaker 2: Good? Pascal, right right? Good stuff. So yeah, so we'll
- 9:34Speaker 2: we'll have to see what happens uh in that regard
- 9:37Speaker 2: with Parker in Dallas.
- 9:39Speaker 1: All right, so let's talk about what the Eagles need
- 9:41Speaker 1: to do on defense this offseason. Some of the things
- 9:44Speaker 1: they have to get settled as they make decisions. And
- 9:47Speaker 1: we have been talking about the first thing since last
- 9:51Speaker 1: year going into the year when we weren't sure what
- 9:53Speaker 1: they were going to do at outside corner, and that's
- 9:56Speaker 1: they have to figure out Cooper to Gen this is
- 9:58Speaker 1: now year three he's going into.
- 10:02Speaker 2: He has excelled at nickel.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Right, he.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Was drafted. He was drafted to play was it safety?
- 10:10Speaker 3: They saw the Eagle no corner?
- 10:12Speaker 2: No, no, no corner. That's right.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Some team saw him in safety. The Eagle saw him
- 10:15Speaker 1: as an outside corner. They felt he could do it,
- 10:17Speaker 1: and they've got to figure this thing out.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah. So last year we put out on our show,
- 10:22Speaker 3: whether it's February March, that we heard they were gonna
- 10:25Speaker 3: keep Degene at Nickel and also has a great decision
- 10:29Speaker 3: and this is this to me sets up their entire
- 10:31Speaker 3: offseason in their secondary because he impacts Corner, Nickel and safety.
- 10:37Speaker 3: And it also we should add it impacts Michael Carter
- 10:41Speaker 3: even having a chance to return. He is on a
- 10:43Speaker 3: contract with the money's way too rich. He's gonna make
- 10:46Speaker 3: a little bit over ten million, which obviously is not
- 10:47Speaker 3: gonna work. But if they moved the gene to safety
- 10:51Speaker 3: or corner, Michael Carter could come back and reduce deal.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Maybe they add some incentives to it to help him
- 10:57Speaker 3: make up for the money he'd be losing. M God
- 11:00Speaker 3: was a good player, meant that, you know, they make
- 11:02Speaker 3: you trade. He didn't really contribute. Is they didn't have
- 11:05Speaker 3: any room for him. You know, they cross train him
- 11:07Speaker 3: at safety and Nickel back with Nickel and safety. So
- 11:11Speaker 3: this sets up everything. Man, where he ends up. It's
- 11:14Speaker 3: the trickle down of the other positions.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, And you know, and we've talked about this.
- 11:20Speaker 1: There's the business side to this. He is now playing,
- 11:24Speaker 1: even if his role stays the same, he's playing outside
- 11:27Speaker 1: corner in about twenty five to thirty percent of the
- 11:29Speaker 1: snaps when the Eagles are in base, and then when
- 11:32Speaker 1: he goes to nickel, he plays at an elite level.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So if he goes into year three with the same role.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Let's say they decided on somebody else at outside corner
- 11:42Speaker 1: and Nickel when the year is up. As long as
- 11:45Speaker 1: he continues to play like he's playing, he and his
- 11:47Speaker 1: agent are gonna have to talk to the Eagles about
- 11:50Speaker 1: his role and how they pay him, because you can say,
- 11:54Speaker 1: you know, you can be the organization try we're gonna
- 11:56Speaker 1: pay him like a pretty good Nickel, And the agent's
- 11:57Speaker 1: gonna say, yeah, but you're playing him outside thirty percent
- 12:00Speaker 1: of the time, and if you did move him outside
- 12:02Speaker 1: like you drafts them two, he'd be really good there.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So it's always tricky with those guys like Trent McDuffie.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Once he I don't think he's got an extension yet
- 12:09Speaker 1: with the Chiefs to see. I'll be interested to see
- 12:13Speaker 1: because that's a similar type of player who came before him.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Right, The question will he Coop's gonna have to be
- 12:20Speaker 3: he has paid nickel in NFL history. Now, what's that
- 12:24Speaker 3: really saying? He's gonna have to get paid in the
- 12:25Speaker 3: twenty million over twenty million he has to just the
- 12:28Speaker 3: way it is. Eagles know this because he's elite. And
- 12:32Speaker 3: then you add what his agent will have the information
- 12:34Speaker 3: how many exactly percentage wise, did he play corner? How
- 12:37Speaker 3: much of Nickel? How much a corner you know, and
- 12:40Speaker 3: that that's the way they're going to set it up.
- 12:41Speaker 3: So yeah, it'll we'll see what happens this season. He
- 12:46Speaker 3: can't sign it. He has to wait Tye for this
- 12:49Speaker 3: this coming season. This is a major season for him
- 12:51Speaker 3: where he lines up again, it impacts who plays opposite
- 12:55Speaker 3: Quinnon Mitchell a non bass down to Nickel obviously m hm,
- 13:01Speaker 3: or if they decided to play any dime. It impacts
- 13:04Speaker 3: safety because I know, we know some teams and you know,
- 13:09Speaker 3: who knows what Vic thinking maybe thinks he could play safety. Yep,
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'm not so sure that he thinks he's a corner
- 13:15Speaker 3: in the front office, did right, And yes, you're right,
- 13:18Speaker 3: he plays on bass downs, but they don't play a
- 13:20Speaker 3: lot of bass. Vic loves pointing out by the way
- 13:22Speaker 3: he seems to have the number roll off of his
- 13:24Speaker 3: tongue about the percentage or how many snaps. And then
- 13:27Speaker 3: again with Michael Carter, to wrap this up, you typically
- 13:31Speaker 3: when you make a trade, yes they were, it was
- 13:34Speaker 3: a depth trade, but he also had time left on
- 13:36Speaker 3: his contract, so that will impact his future. Michael Carter's
- 13:40Speaker 3: going to want to know. So this is this is
- 13:42Speaker 3: like of the to do list, This is by far
- 13:44Speaker 3: number one.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah, regardless of what happens.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I mean, we know Michael Carter can't come back at
- 13:49Speaker 1: the number that he's currently under, but I would like
- 13:52Speaker 1: to see the Eagles make as good of an effort
- 13:54Speaker 1: as they can within reason, right, unless somebody blows him
- 13:57Speaker 1: out of the water once he becomes a free agent
- 13:59Speaker 1: to bring him back.
- 14:01Speaker 3: And maybe again he well wouldn't they.
- 14:03Speaker 1: If they If I'm sorry, I'm saying he's not going
- 14:06Speaker 1: to come back under the current deal, So if they
- 14:07Speaker 1: have to part ways with him, he would become a
- 14:10Speaker 1: free agent, but I'm saying it would be. My point
- 14:13Speaker 1: would be, it'll be nice if the Eagles can and
- 14:16Speaker 1: him can get a good feel of what the market
- 14:17Speaker 1: would be if you were a free agent, and then
- 14:19Speaker 1: maybe work on something, because I think he can add
- 14:22Speaker 1: some versatility this team.
- 14:24Speaker 2: He can be a big nickel player.
- 14:26Speaker 1: He can be you know, you need a backup nickel
- 14:28Speaker 1: if if your nickel is going to be that important
- 14:30Speaker 1: to your defense, if you're seventy percent nickel the way
- 14:32Speaker 1: the Eagles are, then you need a backup Nickel, and
- 14:35Speaker 1: there's no saying that who's the kid they drafted mac
- 14:37Speaker 1: McWilliams is going to be ready for that role. Uh
- 14:40Speaker 1: So it would be nice to see if there would
- 14:42Speaker 1: be some some way they can work it out.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that's there's a lot to umpact that. That's a
- 14:47Speaker 3: major It has such impact where one player lines up
- 14:51Speaker 3: impacts so many different decisions and alignments and all sorts
- 14:56Speaker 3: of stuff. So that's a big one.
- 14:58Speaker 2: There you go, all right.
- 15:00Speaker 1: The second thing that Eagles really need to get into,
- 15:02Speaker 1: especially in their defensive front, is the contract extensions because
- 15:06Speaker 1: they have several players who are either eligible for the
- 15:09Speaker 1: first time or just eligible in general.
- 15:11Speaker 2: And that includes Jordan Davis, JILLN.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Carter, it also includes Moro a Jomo, And I think
- 15:19Speaker 1: that's a fascinating one because the way they maneuver, they've
- 15:23Speaker 1: they've been able to kind of survive on having the
- 15:27Speaker 1: like these Milton Williams Tomorrow a Jomo and then they
- 15:29Speaker 1: drafted Ty Robinson and he'll enter year two because they
- 15:33Speaker 1: know they can't pay like three or four linemen all
- 15:36Speaker 1: interior lignement top money. So if they're gonna pay Carter
- 15:40Speaker 1: and they're gonna pay Jordan Davis, Adam, it's gonna be
- 15:42Speaker 1: tough to also pay a Jomo theoretically.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Theoretically, Yeah, he's uh first year full time starter. You know,
- 15:51Speaker 3: this past season really had a good season pressure, right,
- 15:53Speaker 3: pretty good? Wait, you know what's interesting. Yeah, there were
- 15:58Speaker 3: times when he didn't play well against the run, but
- 16:00Speaker 3: it was not the issue that some people thought it
- 16:02Speaker 3: would be, you know, other than that, well, the chicaga
- 16:05Speaker 3: and they all took a day off. I mean that
- 16:07Speaker 3: was just ridiculous. But overall, the guy's a good football player.
- 16:10Speaker 3: And we know that you Davis and Carter or are
- 16:15Speaker 3: more likely to get one earlier. But the thing is, though,
- 16:19Speaker 3: front offices, look, if they if they're struggling to get
- 16:22Speaker 3: Davis and Carter done and they could get Ojomo done
- 16:24Speaker 3: early and get them at a good number, why would
- 16:27Speaker 3: you not do it? I Mean that's just it's always
- 16:30Speaker 3: it's always about how much you think you could be,
- 16:33Speaker 3: how much you cash you could save by beating the market.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Yep.
- 16:37Speaker 3: But the agent has to agree to it, and that's
- 16:39Speaker 3: you know, that's where it becomes harder.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Right, I mean, I mean, if I'm a trouble agent,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I may say, hey, look you're the way you're playing,
- 16:46Speaker 1: you're gonna get You could theoretically get an opportunity like
- 16:50Speaker 1: Milton Williams did, which is to finish out your contract,
- 16:52Speaker 1: play really well on a team that's expected to be good.
- 16:55Speaker 1: You know, feast off having a nice front four, get
- 16:57Speaker 1: a bunch of sacks, and maybe you'll get blown away
- 16:59Speaker 1: in free agency by somebody because he's on that sete.
- 17:02Speaker 2: He's on it.
- 17:02Speaker 1: He's not as good of a player as Milton. We've
- 17:04Speaker 1: talked about that, but he's not. He's a good player,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and he's on a good trajectory. H And everybody needs
- 17:09Speaker 1: interior pass rushers. So, like you said, the agent's feedback
- 17:13Speaker 1: will also be really consequential in this. I also wonder
- 17:16Speaker 1: as we add the third element to this, Jalen Phillips,
- 17:20Speaker 1: who if they want him back, is going to command
- 17:22Speaker 1: a lot of money.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Can the Eagles.
- 17:25Speaker 1: We know they can pay Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, and
- 17:30Speaker 1: Jalen Phillips, they can pay anybody they want because they
- 17:33Speaker 1: structure contracts in a special way. But at the end
- 17:37Speaker 1: of the day, they still have to do smart business,
- 17:39Speaker 1: and I don't know if they will really feasibly think
- 17:42Speaker 1: especially knowing next year that q Quinton, Quinton, Quinnyon Mitchell
- 17:47Speaker 1: and Cooper de Gene will be up for extensions. If
- 17:49Speaker 1: they can pay all three of those guys in the
- 17:52Speaker 1: defensive front.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Yeah, typically when you go but their run pick, you
- 17:56Speaker 3: don't want to won your marriage. I'd be very surprised
- 17:58Speaker 3: if they don't try to bring Phillips back hard. But
- 18:00Speaker 3: again it's Cubs voice says, what's the number? What are
- 18:03Speaker 3: you looking for?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Mm hm.
- 18:05Speaker 3: He's an interesting we'll talk more about this when we
- 18:07Speaker 3: go over the entire free agent list, but he's going
- 18:10Speaker 3: to be fascinating because he did a good job that
- 18:12Speaker 3: the sacray wasn't a high pressure rate was much was
- 18:14Speaker 3: much better. They stayed healthy. We know it's unfortunate part
- 18:18Speaker 3: of his career is not staying healthy. But he's got
- 18:22Speaker 3: exactly what you want length, character, good solid football player.
- 18:27Speaker 3: But and then oh and you add to j Alex
- 18:29Speaker 3: Hunt to that list you just mentioned after the season,
- 18:34Speaker 3: you have to be careful, like you you you can't
- 18:36Speaker 3: be paying guys like seven guys top of the market just.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Right, especially you still have guys on offense that make
- 18:42Speaker 2: a lot of money too.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Even if yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and you know a J.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Brown's cash would help, but they may not do it.
- 18:49Speaker 3: We'll see what We'll see how that one that that's
- 18:52Speaker 3: another but that's a that's a another talk in a
- 18:54Speaker 3: couple of weeks.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Yep, I'm forgetting you know, I agree with the Eagles.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Will because they give him a third round pick and
- 19:02Speaker 1: because he's a good player, will want to keep Jalen Phillips.
- 19:06Speaker 1: But they were not busy busy with big contracts and
- 19:09Speaker 1: free agency last off season, not at all. So I
- 19:14Speaker 1: guess I guess they have to figure out if they
- 19:17Speaker 1: are going to be this year. Because theoretically, you could say,
- 19:21Speaker 1: if I don't retain Jalen Phillips, he's gonna sign a
- 19:24Speaker 1: big contract somewhere and I can.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Probably get with the contract.
- 19:27Speaker 1: He's gonna get a third round pick comp pick in return.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But that that involves me not canceling it out by
- 19:34Speaker 1: making a huge money edition or you know, in free
- 19:37Speaker 1: agency ourselves. So that's part of the formula that there.
- 19:41Speaker 1: That how he's got to kind of figure out, Yeah,
- 19:43Speaker 1: it's it's.
- 19:46Speaker 3: It's gonna be fascinating his market. How much does he
- 19:50Speaker 3: like it's how much has he won versus the reality
- 19:55Speaker 3: m hmcause clubs will always hold the injury factor against
- 19:58Speaker 3: the agent or player. They may love the player, but
- 20:01Speaker 3: they want to do anything they can to gain an EDW.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Just talking to contract negotiators, they are always going to
- 20:05Speaker 3: bring it up. But then the agent will have the
- 20:07Speaker 3: PFF numbers, anything he could find that has a strong
- 20:11Speaker 3: case for his client. It's it's really funny some of
- 20:13Speaker 3: these negotiations and then what they have to do sometimes
- 20:17Speaker 3: to shoot it down. Oh but yeah, but you know
- 20:19Speaker 3: he this game. Look at these three or four games,
- 20:22Speaker 3: man Warren't wasn't very good. You know that that's not
- 20:25Speaker 3: you know, we like the player a lot, but we
- 20:27Speaker 3: don't think he's top of the market because of this.
- 20:29Speaker 3: You know, it's just funny. But Phillips is good man.
- 20:31Speaker 3: He he had great debut, just a solid football player
- 20:36Speaker 3: and healthy and he's got exactly what you want. From
- 20:38Speaker 3: a length standpoint, you can't kind of create people like
- 20:40Speaker 3: look look like this. It's ridiculous. Agree, he loved being
- 20:43Speaker 3: an Eagle, which you know, it's got a little nice
- 20:45Speaker 3: little nugget there.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's a really good and it's they don't
- 20:51Speaker 1: have the depth that they usually have a fact.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Honestly, when you really look at it right now, just
- 21:00Speaker 3: under contract, it's at edge. Okay, strictly at edge. Mm hmm,
- 21:07Speaker 3: it's Nolan Smith, it's Jlex Hunt, and that's it. Under
- 21:14Speaker 3: contract only.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Don't usually say that about the Eagles. They usually got
- 21:18Speaker 2: like three or four guys that they've.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Well, here's why, Philip is ups up, b G's up.
- 21:25Speaker 3: The concers up ups did a nice job and what
- 21:29Speaker 3: they asked. Unfortunately, they made the Phillips traight and BG
- 21:32Speaker 3: came back. So, yeah, he became relevant. Unfortunately when he
- 21:36Speaker 3: was active, he only played special teams after, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 3: after those guys came in. But yeah, they they need
- 21:42Speaker 3: they need a minimum two edge rushers, if not three.
- 21:46Speaker 3: You need to have depth and rotation. Yeah, and with
- 21:50Speaker 3: Nolan Smith's injury history, the way he's built, Yeah, I
- 21:53Speaker 3: mean they got a rock and roll in this position.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I can't see them giving him an extension, even though
- 21:58Speaker 1: he's eligible for one. Yeah, that's yeah, No, that would
- 22:02Speaker 1: be very very risky and nonsensical given all the other
- 22:05Speaker 1: guys that.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Start next year. Yeah, you gotta see what they do
- 22:09Speaker 3: in for agity then the draft.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Mm hmmm.
- 22:11Speaker 3: I mean they know they need edge rushers and with
- 22:13Speaker 3: all the draft calf what they have, and we know
- 22:15Speaker 3: that how we will wind up moving some of those picks.
- 22:17Speaker 3: But the edge rusher group, by the way, the early
- 22:22Speaker 3: order and receiver group is not very good for the draft, right,
- 22:26Speaker 3: and then edge rusher group is good now again, well,
- 22:29Speaker 3: well it's a way down. We always do for agency first.
- 22:31Speaker 3: That's how we roll in nine years doing the show.
- 22:33Speaker 3: But uh, I'm very interest to see what peoples do
- 22:36Speaker 3: at edge rush very interested.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Hey, fall is planting season.

- 26:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 26:26Speaker 1: And last, but not least, really've got to figure out
- 26:29Speaker 1: what their plan is at that second level at off
- 26:31Speaker 1: ball linebacker, because Nikobe Dean's going to be a free agent,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and Jahad Campbell is waiting in the wings.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I mean, I don't even know if there's that much
- 26:40Speaker 2: to figure out.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I mean they may have already figured Hey, I love Nacobe,
- 26:42Speaker 1: but we got Jahad Campbell here, and you can't send
- 26:46Speaker 1: them for too much longer.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Now you can. It's quarterback. You can afford to do it. Look,
- 26:51Speaker 3: you can these guys plays in the forties. You know.
- 26:54Speaker 3: It's the by the way, the injury rate at inside backer,
- 26:57Speaker 3: whether it's a forty three middle linebacker or ilb is
- 27:02Speaker 3: vic Lexi Coleman thirty four, that the injury rate is
- 27:04Speaker 3: very high. So yeah, these guys don't have super long careers.
- 27:12Speaker 3: So yeah, he's got play. He just has to play.
- 27:14Speaker 3: But we'll we'll, we'll see what we what we learn.
- 27:16Speaker 3: We usually learn a lot at the combine about are
- 27:19Speaker 3: even going to make Nikobe Deane an offer? And by
- 27:21Speaker 3: the way, before we get out here, at least four
- 27:24Speaker 3: players on the Eagles defense they change agencies.
- 27:28Speaker 1: So you don't change agents if you're looking for less money.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Yeah, like when Blanket Chip did it, which is surprising
- 27:36Speaker 3: over the summer, Yeah, he was getting stonewalled, but he
- 27:40Speaker 3: was so underpaid, like you could. I know some fans say, okay,
- 27:43Speaker 3: he's not good enough athlete, which we've talked about for
- 27:45Speaker 3: four years. That's certainly true. But he gets things set up.
- 27:49Speaker 3: He's very important. We've noted how much of the coach
- 27:52Speaker 3: of staff had been high on him. And we'll have
- 27:56Speaker 3: to see. Like you said, I mean, the guy's change
- 27:57Speaker 3: agents for a reason. They want to get paid. So
- 27:59Speaker 3: we'll see what he can do.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I think that for me, the big mystery we'll finish
- 28:04Speaker 1: off with this is read blanketship and can he break
- 28:08Speaker 1: the streak of Eagles undrafted free agents looking to get
- 28:13Speaker 1: rewarded more on the free agent market. It did not
- 28:15Speaker 1: happen for TG Edwards the way he was hoping. He
- 28:18Speaker 1: got a decent deal, but not decent, ye know, but
- 28:21Speaker 1: nothing great. And then who was another undrafted free agent
- 28:25Speaker 1: they had that signed somewhere? There was another one that
- 28:28Speaker 1: we thought would get a deal and didn't really get
- 28:30Speaker 1: a huge one.
- 28:31Speaker 2: But you know, we've talked about.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Cam Curl from Washington and how important he was that
- 28:36Speaker 1: and yeah, it was a guy who was very low
- 28:37Speaker 1: pick and and it gets held against them, and you know,
- 28:42Speaker 1: you could say it's not fair, but that's just the
- 28:43Speaker 1: way it works in the business. We've talked to a
- 28:45Speaker 1: lot of agents who hate that it happens that way,
- 28:48Speaker 1: but it does, and you know, read will have to
- 28:51Speaker 1: overcome that that quote unquote stigma. It doesn't matter how productive.
- 28:56Speaker 3: With Curl. He didn't have a lot of ball production,
- 28:59Speaker 3: not different stor blank Chip did earlier in his career.
- 29:02Speaker 3: But that that's just one small facet to evaluation, right.
- 29:07Speaker 3: The Curl's just not a ploy like c J. Carter
- 29:09Speaker 3: Johnes is a playmaker. Okay, it's not just the interceptions.
- 29:11Speaker 3: The guy's a playmaker. He just has a knack for it.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Some guys don't. Some giys are average add it decent
- 29:16Speaker 3: at it. What I love about Quinnett Mitchell, by the way,
- 29:19Speaker 3: is like his hands were really bad in college at Toledo.
- 29:21Speaker 3: That that's from a Scott I know, but he goes
- 29:24Speaker 3: the dude's cover skills are elite and that's shown up
- 29:26Speaker 3: because that's when you got to go, it's a guy,
- 29:28Speaker 3: great player or not. Don't worry about how many interceptions
- 29:30Speaker 3: he had. Who cares?
- 29:31Speaker 2: Right?
- 29:31Speaker 3: Is a guy stud is he unreal? And coverage? Yes,
- 29:34Speaker 3: that's all it matters.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's fair to say that Reid blanketship
- 29:38Speaker 1: would not fit every single scheme. Now he's not gonna.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I don't think you want to put him in a
- 29:42Speaker 1: Todd Bowles or Brian Flores defense where you're blitzing so
- 29:46Speaker 1: much and every all your d bacs have to play a.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Lot of man coverage. I'm not sure that would be.
- 29:51Speaker 3: His huge strouble with that, right, And he's more of
- 29:53Speaker 3: a he's really a box safety.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Right right, All right, good stuff though.
- 29:58Speaker 1: That's what the Eagles have to figure out in the
- 30:01Speaker 1: coming days and the coming weeks as we get closer
- 30:03Speaker 1: obviously to free agency and combine and all those great things.
- 30:07Speaker 1: That's gonna do it For this episode of Inside the Birds,
