Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Emily a body here. You are listening to
- 0:22Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I am sitting here in
- 0:26Speaker 1: the studio. I am being stared at by my friend's puppy,
- 0:30Speaker 1: who I am babysitting only until tomorrow. His name is Frankie.
- 0:35Speaker 1: If you follow me on social maybe you've seen him.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And I'm thinking about how grateful I am for my community.
- 0:45Speaker 1: A month or so ago, a girlfriend said to me
- 0:48Speaker 1: that just because you are building something mostly on your
- 0:52Speaker 1: own doesn't mean that you need to do it alone.
- 0:56Speaker 1: And that really stuck with me so much so that recently,
- 1:04Speaker 1: as I've been thinking about what excites me, what I
- 1:08Speaker 1: want to do moving forward, and really brainstorming about the
- 1:12Speaker 1: future of this podcast as you listen to it, I
- 1:16Speaker 1: decided to call in a group of my girlfriends and
- 1:20Speaker 1: have a meeting of the minds. I spent part of
- 1:25Speaker 1: my work day on Tuesday or writing down all of
- 1:28Speaker 1: the questions that I had, writing down so many of
- 1:31Speaker 1: my thoughts, writing down single words that came to me
- 1:34Speaker 1: when I think about where I'm going, what I'm heading,
- 1:37Speaker 1: what my goals are, And to have the opportunity to
- 1:42Speaker 1: have these women over and sit down and come together
- 1:45Speaker 1: in community and to feel so supported in something that
- 1:49Speaker 1: they didn't have to do, but they chose to do
- 1:52Speaker 1: it with me.
- 1:54Speaker 2: It felt so special.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And I think about that sentiment, you don't have to
- 1:59Speaker 1: do it alone.
- 2:00Speaker 2: How applicable is that for so many of us.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And I'm not just talking about those of you who
- 2:06Speaker 1: work for yourself, or maybe you're an only child, or
- 2:10Speaker 1: perhaps you are someone that has a goal that doesn't
- 2:14Speaker 1: necessarily require anyone else. That doesn't mean you can't welcome
- 2:19Speaker 1: your crew, your people into the fold to help you
- 2:23Speaker 1: get through the things that inspire you, the things that
- 2:27Speaker 1: are important to you to get to that next goal.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I've talked so much on the show about the importance
- 2:33Speaker 1: of accountability buddies when it comes to working out. And
- 2:36Speaker 1: that doesn't necessarily mean that you're showing up at the
- 2:39Speaker 1: gym and someone is there with you each and every other.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Day, if that's your cadence.
- 2:43Speaker 1: But what it does mean is that you're opening up
- 2:45Speaker 1: about your journey to someone that makes you feel seen,
- 2:49Speaker 1: someone that makes you feel comfortable. I am totally on
- 2:54Speaker 1: the same wavelength that oftentimes I want to do it
- 2:58Speaker 1: on my own. At least I want to show myself
- 3:01Speaker 1: that I can. But what happens when you open yourself
- 3:05Speaker 1: up to the community, to your community, is that you
- 3:09Speaker 1: realize how special it is to do it together and
- 3:13Speaker 1: that the people that want to see you win, those
- 3:16Speaker 1: people are going to make the process so much better.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Hard stop, You don't have to be so strong all
- 3:24Speaker 2: the time.
- 3:25Speaker 1: It's not easy to let go of that facade if
- 3:31Speaker 1: you will, but I promise you, just like strengthening a muscle,
- 3:36Speaker 1: this is something that requires reps, and you won't regret
- 3:40Speaker 1: putting in the reps. You won't regret allowing your people
- 3:44Speaker 1: to show up for you and the things that excite you.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So to my village, thank you. And my question for
- 3:52Speaker 1: you this week is what is something right now that
- 3:55Speaker 1: you are handling on your own and transparently doesn't need
- 4:00Speaker 1: to be that way. Are you shutting people out for
- 4:03Speaker 1: no particular reason at all? And how can you harness
- 4:08Speaker 1: the support of the people that care about you to
- 4:11Speaker 1: better go after the things that light you up? And
- 4:16Speaker 1: now a listener question. Hey, Emily, it's been inspiring to
- 4:21Speaker 1: see you conquer pull ups. It's making me want to
- 4:24Speaker 1: work toward achieving that goal for myself. This is a
- 4:27Speaker 1: bit random, but I remember you used to wear a
- 4:29Speaker 1: Whoop pretty regularly before. I was curious as to why
- 4:34Speaker 1: you stopped. I'm debating different fitness trackers, especially for the
- 4:37Speaker 1: recovery benefits, so I wanted to get your opinion about
- 4:40Speaker 1: Whoop or whatever else you feel like serves you. Thanks
- 4:44Speaker 1: so much in advance, Christine. Hey, Christine, So I wore Whoop.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I want to say for about three years. I woren't
- 4:52Speaker 1: religiously around the beginning of the COVID pandemic, and I
- 4:58Speaker 1: loved the information that Woop gave me. I still believe
- 5:02Speaker 1: that Whoop is a valuable piece of technology, But what
- 5:06Speaker 1: I realized was that when the summer came around, as
- 5:09Speaker 1: someone who is also a devoted Apple Watch user, I
- 5:13Speaker 1: didn't want the tanlines from either wrist wearable. It's kind
- 5:19Speaker 1: of as simple as that. Not only did I not
- 5:21Speaker 1: like the sensation of often feeling like I was kind
- 5:24Speaker 1: of handcuffed between the two, so to speak, I also
- 5:28Speaker 1: take my Apple wash off in the sun, and so
- 5:30Speaker 1: I would take my Whoop off in the sun, and
- 5:33Speaker 1: I felt like I was missing out on some of
- 5:35Speaker 1: the data, the information, etc.
- 5:37Speaker 2: That I wanted from wearing.
- 5:40Speaker 1: That device because of this choice because of the tanlines,
- 5:43Speaker 1: a complete vanity reason. So I switched to or ring
- 5:49Speaker 1: a few years ago. I don't have any personal relationship
- 5:52Speaker 1: with or ring, but I like it because.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I don't mind a ring tanline.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I appreciate the data that it gives me. I believe
- 5:59Speaker 1: that the day is very comparable to what you're getting
- 6:02Speaker 1: from Whoop. My only downside of the orr ring is
- 6:06Speaker 1: that I take it off when I'm doing heavy lifting,
- 6:09Speaker 1: so whereas with the Whoop, it's designed that you don't
- 6:12Speaker 1: really need to think about something like that unless you
- 6:14Speaker 1: have to flip the device around to do something with
- 6:16Speaker 1: a kettlebell. I'm taking the or ring off completely as
- 6:20Speaker 1: to avoid scratching it up when I'm doing something like
- 6:23Speaker 1: barbell deadlifts, barbell squats, overhead presses, kettlebell swings that kind
- 6:28Speaker 1: of stuff.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Am I that concerned about that? Not so much.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I like the idea that I'm wearing it a lot
- 6:35Speaker 1: more regularly than I was wearing the Whoop previously. And
- 6:40Speaker 1: of course, there are a slew of other wearable options,
- 6:44Speaker 1: including Apple Watch, which I said I wear all the time, Garmins, Corros,
- 6:49Speaker 1: Amaze fit La, Gabby Thomas, the list goes on, so
- 6:55Speaker 1: do your research figure out what feels right for you.
