- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Inscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcast.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Right side to Wilson shentered up, Oh kind has any scores?
- 0:13Speaker 2: He scores? Alex ovatch Tan scor Saint ninety five. There's
- 0:20Speaker 2: a new goal scoring champion and his name he is
- 0:25Speaker 2: Alexander Oh betch Tan.
- 0:28Speaker 1: He has done it.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Hello, everybody, welcome to a special bonus episode of nhlu Scripted.
- 0:35Speaker 3: This is not your boy ad Nan Verk introducing us.
- 0:38Speaker 3: In case you couldn't tell from the different intonation of
- 0:41Speaker 3: my voice, Av's on the road for Amazon. He'll be
- 0:44Speaker 3: working the big game Monday night between the Winnipeg Jets
- 0:47Speaker 3: and the White Hot Saint Louis Blues.
- 0:50Speaker 4: What could be a pretty cool playoff preview.
- 0:53Speaker 3: But Jason Demarz and I we had to jump on,
- 0:56Speaker 3: of course to talk about Ov, Alexander Ovechkin and the
- 1:00Speaker 3: great Chase.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Jason will go straight to you. Ov did it. We
- 1:03Speaker 4: knew he would. We knew you take care of business.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I don't know if anyone thought he would get it
- 1:07Speaker 3: done quite this quickly, but history has been made today.
- 1:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, this is a congratulations from NHL unscripted
- 1:16Speaker 5: directly to Alexandrovchkin and the Washington Capitals. They can start
- 1:19Speaker 5: actually playing hockey now and not just trying to get
- 1:22Speaker 5: him the record. But I you know, I had a
- 1:24Speaker 5: privilege to play against him, and you know, when I
- 1:27Speaker 5: played against him, he was already you know, probably five
- 1:30Speaker 5: six years in his career and he's you know, I'm
- 1:33Speaker 5: retired two years and he's still playing and just goes
- 1:35Speaker 5: to show you his durability. And you know, obviously we'd
- 1:39Speaker 5: love to have adnin here, but we know Adnandes only
- 1:42Speaker 5: works on paid days and he is flying to his
- 1:45Speaker 5: paid gig. But we thought we needed to do it
- 1:48Speaker 5: just because hey, this word NHL supported podcast, and we
- 1:53Speaker 5: got to support the guys in the NHL. And this
- 1:55Speaker 5: is what we do. We are a podcast that wants
- 1:58Speaker 5: to give as much love to the NHL and expand
- 2:02Speaker 5: our voices as far as we can, because you know,
- 2:04Speaker 5: it's just one of the greatest leagues in the world.
- 2:06Speaker 5: And you could see it, and you could see why
- 2:08Speaker 5: this is the greatest league in the world just by
- 2:11Speaker 5: this whole chase and how much it got everybody together
- 2:14Speaker 5: and everybody's supporting them. Fans from other teams, we're traveling
- 2:17Speaker 5: to see Alexandrovitchkin to cheer for him when he scored
- 2:20Speaker 5: players on other teams. We're supporting, and we all wanted
- 2:23Speaker 5: this to happen. And you know, records, it's a cliche,
- 2:26Speaker 5: but records are made to be broken. And you know,
- 2:29Speaker 5: if everybody's saying they didn't want to see Gretzky's record broken,
- 2:33Speaker 5: I feel like if you ask Gretzky himself, yeah, maybe
- 2:35Speaker 5: a small part of them would want to see his
- 2:38Speaker 5: records stand the test of time. But to me, the
- 2:42Speaker 5: how you prove that a league is advancing and eras
- 2:47Speaker 5: people are getting better and the league is getting better,
- 2:49Speaker 5: and the old generation is passing on to the new
- 2:52Speaker 5: generation and they're learning new tricks and they're continuing the legacy.
- 2:55Speaker 5: I mean, you need to see these records broken. And
- 2:58Speaker 5: you know, I'm so happy that Alexandrovitchkin did it against
- 3:01Speaker 5: the goalie he's never scored on. That's what's crazy, all
- 3:04Speaker 5: the little underlying numbers, Ilias sirokn never scored on against
- 3:07Speaker 5: them in two games, and he just does it from
- 3:09Speaker 5: his office like that, where we knew he would. You know,
- 3:13Speaker 5: I think we all thought there was empty net stuff
- 3:15Speaker 5: tal that was going to happen. But we saw the
- 3:17Speaker 5: micd up video of OV saying he doesn't want to
- 3:19Speaker 5: get it on an empty net, he wants a gold
- 3:21Speaker 5: in the crease, which I thought was just a testament
- 3:23Speaker 5: to him. A lot of guys could have taken the
- 3:25Speaker 5: easy way out, and we saw that game they scored
- 3:28Speaker 5: an empty net, or Ryan Leonard gets empty net, that
- 3:30Speaker 5: could have been Ov. He wants to do it the
- 3:31Speaker 5: right way, and and even though I was four empty netters,
- 3:35Speaker 5: I didn't mind. I was like, however, you get it.
- 3:37Speaker 5: That's just an incredible record. And for him to do
- 3:41Speaker 5: it on the island, in Long Island was so so
- 3:45Speaker 5: incredible to watch. I was in my living room. I
- 3:47Speaker 5: jumped up and down almost. It's one of those were
- 3:50Speaker 5: worry moments. I was screaming. My wife was in the
- 3:52Speaker 5: other room. I was like, he did it, He did it, unbelievable.
- 3:54Speaker 5: I got chills a few tiers almost, just because you know,
- 3:59Speaker 5: we know as athletes how we struggle and how hard
- 4:03Speaker 5: it is to play in this lee. You know, one
- 4:04Speaker 5: hundred is to be dominant this league. So you just
- 4:06Speaker 5: got to respect and be nambored by a guy like that,
- 4:08Speaker 5: and you know I was. I had the pleasure of
- 4:11Speaker 5: seeing the tying goal live in d C against the
- 4:15Speaker 5: Chicago Blackhawks, and I jumped.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Well, we got we got to get into that. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 3: we're with the lead a little bit there. I mean,
- 4:21Speaker 3: Hope did some quick business. You were there for the
- 4:24Speaker 3: game tying goal in that game against the Blackhawks. I
- 4:28Speaker 3: mean it seemed like the energy in the building that
- 4:30Speaker 3: night was absolutely off the charge. You know, what can
- 4:33Speaker 3: you tell us about being there? And just like I
- 4:35Speaker 3: was saying, the energy all around that arena, Well, I
- 4:38Speaker 3: have three moments in my career where and you know,
- 4:41Speaker 3: playing and non playing that you know, I thought the
- 4:45Speaker 3: building was probably the loudest ever heard. Was Is Number one.
- 4:49Speaker 5: At the top of the list was always the Shark
- 4:50Speaker 5: Tank and pluck come playoff time. There's nothing I heard
- 4:53Speaker 5: in my career or post career louder than that. Number
- 4:56Speaker 5: two was the Edmonton or Is Rogers Place last playoffs
- 5:02Speaker 5: in Game six was the loudest I've ever heard of
- 5:05Speaker 5: building after the Shark Tank. And then number three was
- 5:08Speaker 5: Capital One Arena when Ovi scored that second goal to
- 5:13Speaker 5: tie it up, and that whole energy, the whole night
- 5:15Speaker 5: in that building was so loud, it was so rocking.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Every time Ovie touched the buck, people put cheer and shoot.
- 5:22Speaker 5: People were booing Spencer Night every time he made a save.
- 5:25Speaker 5: It was actually one of the funniest, fun little games
- 5:28Speaker 5: to be a part of. So, you know, it's it's
- 5:29Speaker 5: it was cool to be there. We're outside out front
- 5:32Speaker 5: doing an NHL. We're doing NHL now outside kind of
- 5:36Speaker 5: on the concourse and listening to all the fans and talking,
- 5:38Speaker 5: and we talked to the old the old guard, Braden Holtby.
- 5:41Speaker 5: We got talked to Carl Alzner, who ended up telling
- 5:44Speaker 5: us this crazy.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Story that his first goal.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Which was like a couple games or it was like
- 5:49Speaker 5: a couple of games into his career, he got his
- 5:51Speaker 5: first goal and Ovi tipped it and he told him, no, no,
- 5:55Speaker 5: on all, it's years, it's years, it's years, and then
- 5:56Speaker 5: told them years later that he tipped it like technically
- 6:00Speaker 5: not to say that he had probably didn't have a
- 6:02Speaker 5: couple other lucky ones in his career that he didn't
- 6:05Speaker 5: take credit for, but that would have been the game
- 6:07Speaker 5: winning one, his sorry, the record breaking one would have
- 6:10Speaker 5: been that second goal in DC. So you know, what
- 6:12Speaker 5: a crazy story we hear there, and you know, I
- 6:15Speaker 5: talked to Nicholas Backstrom a little bit on text and
- 6:18Speaker 5: they were just so pumped up. They parted with him
- 6:20Speaker 5: after the game. So for them to kind of get
- 6:22Speaker 5: on a bird come to the island after having a
- 6:25Speaker 5: night out and then playing a twelve thirty game, because
- 6:27Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure that you know that game, the record
- 6:30Speaker 5: tying goal. He was out laid and so are all
- 6:33Speaker 5: the guys. And they come into the island. Obviously they
- 6:34Speaker 5: looked sluggish all game, and they didn't look great, but
- 6:37Speaker 5: all he gets. The gets the record breaking one. Probably
- 6:40Speaker 5: stung a little bit and good for him. And you know,
- 6:43Speaker 5: I feel like now the Capitals can take it and
- 6:46Speaker 5: take a deep X sale and start playing hockey, because
- 6:49Speaker 5: I think it was something that was weighing on them
- 6:50Speaker 5: all the cameras. They just wanted to get it over with,
- 6:52Speaker 5: and they knew he was going to get it. And
- 6:55Speaker 5: I mean, listen, in one the same amount of games
- 6:57Speaker 5: as Wayne Gretzky fourteen hundred and sixty seven and he
- 7:01Speaker 5: gets eight ninety five on the same amount of games,
- 7:04Speaker 5: So incredibly impressive and such a huge congratulations to him
- 7:08Speaker 5: and his family. So I mean, did you were you
- 7:10Speaker 5: were you able to listen to tell the the speeches
- 7:13Speaker 5: by Wayne and Gary just great speeches, you know, Wayne Gretz.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Absolute, I had a hard time.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I was just gonna quickly say my son was
- 7:23Speaker 3: watching it with me and he was completely confused because
- 7:25Speaker 3: he thought the game was over because everyone was on
- 7:28Speaker 3: the ice and it looked like it was over, and
- 7:30Speaker 3: I had to explain, well, no, the game.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Is not over yet. They're taking a break.
- 7:34Speaker 3: How do you Yeah, it was incredible and then they
- 7:36Speaker 3: and then to see the messages from Michael, Jordan Lebron, James,
- 7:39Speaker 3: Roger Federer, I mean the goats of all goats, sort
- 7:44Speaker 3: like every sport, Michael.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Yeah, who else? Who am I missing?
- 7:47Speaker 5: Tom Brady, Phelps, Tom Brady, I think Derek Jeter. I
- 7:50Speaker 5: saw DEREKK.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Jeeter, That's right.
- 7:52Speaker 3: I mean incredible tribute Rosby, you know once he scored
- 7:55Speaker 3: the goal.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, Sid was such a great little tribute
- 7:59Speaker 5: as well. But I just love the way Wayne talked
- 8:01Speaker 5: and and was so heartfelt the way he and it
- 8:05Speaker 5: is true when you think about it, there's you know
- 8:07Speaker 5: a lot of things in life you're like, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 5: there's a lot of people that have been through this.
- 8:12Speaker 5: You know, that is one thing that only Wayne Gretzky
- 8:14Speaker 5: and has been through. Maybe Gordy House the other one,
- 8:17Speaker 5: but the only one that could touch on that experience
- 8:20Speaker 5: is Wayne Gretzky in that moment too, Alexandrovitchkin. So to
- 8:24Speaker 5: feel like you're that simpatico with somebody and that you know,
- 8:28Speaker 5: closely tied and no one can know what he's feeling
- 8:31Speaker 5: other than Wayne Gretzky's a pretty cool thing to feel
- 8:34Speaker 5: and a great person to kind of being in concert
- 8:37Speaker 5: with is Wayne Gretzky, you know, one of the greatest
- 8:39Speaker 5: of all time and in hockey, and you know it's
- 8:43Speaker 5: it's so incredible to see that and see how humble
- 8:47Speaker 5: he was and grateful that Alexovitchkin was able to do it.
- 8:51Speaker 5: And then you know Gary Bettman amidst all the booze,
- 8:54Speaker 5: which is just so funny. Every time it happens, He's like,
- 8:56Speaker 5: well you booing me, I'm just coming here to It's
- 8:59Speaker 5: just like become a funny joke between fans and Gary.
- 9:02Speaker 5: We just bow him and he loves it. And great
- 9:05Speaker 5: speech by him that the painting was amazing, and you
- 9:07Speaker 5: know the way he did it and we saw a
- 9:11Speaker 5: lot of the inside the locker room and the micd
- 9:12Speaker 5: up moments and how much he loves his teammates. I
- 9:15Speaker 5: don't think there's enough talked about, and it's it just
- 9:19Speaker 5: came out during this chase the past three months. But
- 9:21Speaker 5: like you know, the whole story behind Ovi early in
- 9:24Speaker 5: his career was he was selfish. He didn't play defense
- 9:26Speaker 5: and for him to kind of take that on the
- 9:28Speaker 5: chin for as long as he did, and now hearing
- 9:30Speaker 5: all the stories of it, maybe he did learn along
- 9:32Speaker 5: the way. But hearing all the stories of how great
- 9:34Speaker 5: of a teammate loves his teammates, loves being a part
- 9:36Speaker 5: of the guys, takes guys out, takes care of guys,
- 9:39Speaker 5: anything guys need, they can call him, is just a
- 9:41Speaker 5: testament to the person and the man that he is.
- 9:46Speaker 5: And to see how excited the guys were for him,
- 9:48Speaker 5: I mean, everybody in the world was excited to see
- 9:50Speaker 5: him break that because the witness greatness live is something
- 9:53Speaker 5: that's truly a special experience for anybody to witness.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you mentioned Wayne Gretzky being there. Obviously
- 10:00Speaker 3: there's going to be a ton of comparisons to the
- 10:03Speaker 3: two now that. You know, who knows how many more
- 10:05Speaker 3: Gretzky records will fall.
- 10:07Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 10:08Speaker 3: This was the big one obviously, but you know, in
- 10:11Speaker 3: terms of the comparison between the two, the thing that
- 10:13Speaker 3: sticks out for me looking at it is Alex Ovechkin's
- 10:17Speaker 3: consistency for twenty years. You know, Gretzky set the record,
- 10:21Speaker 3: but people forget he scored nine goals his last season
- 10:23Speaker 3: in the NHL, Like he was not scoring goals his
- 10:26Speaker 3: last two or three seasons. OVI just wrapped up his
- 10:29Speaker 3: fourteenth forty goal season, you know, and there's no reason
- 10:33Speaker 3: to think he can't get a fifteenth next year.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Just you know, I have the numbers here because I mean,
- 10:37Speaker 4: how many times.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Wayne, Well, Wayne, when you look back, Wayne had a
- 10:41Speaker 5: ninety goal season, didn't he Well, he was very front loaded.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Wayne was very he had. Yeah, like you take the
- 10:48Speaker 5: ninety goals away, that's three of Ov's seasons, you know,
- 10:50Speaker 5: and it's like he did it in one year. So
- 10:53Speaker 5: to touch on your point, Yeah, the consistency level in
- 10:55Speaker 5: which he scores is bananas.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Well, this is what I looked at.
- 10:59Speaker 3: The NHL posted a full list of every goal that
- 11:02Speaker 3: he scored, and I kind of took a little look
- 11:05Speaker 3: at it, and I found this incredible. So between goals,
- 11:08Speaker 3: between goals two hundred and three hundred, it took Ovi
- 11:11Speaker 3: about twenty six months. Yeah, between goals five hundred and
- 11:14Speaker 3: six hundred, twenty six months.
- 11:17Speaker 4: So he just kept going and go like he never
- 11:19Speaker 4: slowed down. Doesn't it know?
- 11:22Speaker 5: That shot? It's just so wild how he gets it off.
- 11:25Speaker 5: And I think the biggest thing was, yeah, the last three,
- 11:28Speaker 5: which was pretty cool. The last two was from his office,
- 11:32Speaker 5: but he probably had the most varieties ever had this year.
- 11:36Speaker 5: And we got to talk to Creg Craig Laughlin and
- 11:40Speaker 5: on NHL Network, which was amazing him just coming off
- 11:43Speaker 5: of heart surgery and looking fantastic.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Color commentator for Capitals brought Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 5: And that's the other thing I want to bring up
- 11:49Speaker 5: for them to allow. And I don't think it ever
- 11:52Speaker 5: should have been a question Ben Andatti and Lachlan to
- 11:55Speaker 5: call that goal the game breaking goal, the game record
- 11:59Speaker 5: breaking goal, and they also both of them called his
- 12:02Speaker 5: first ever goal in the NHL. I think it is
- 12:04Speaker 5: just such a poetic moment. And I understand. I think
- 12:07Speaker 5: I mentioned this a couple of previous episodes. I understand
- 12:09Speaker 5: the ESPN of It All and TNT, and you know
- 12:12Speaker 5: Kenny Alberts was shoozing Sean Mcdonnoh great, great announcers, but
- 12:17Speaker 5: you know, you have to leave it to the local guys.
- 12:20Speaker 5: I just feel like it's something they need to be
- 12:22Speaker 5: get to give in their moment that you know, these
- 12:24Speaker 5: guys support Ov, Noah's family, know his kids growing up
- 12:27Speaker 5: there around the rink. It's just something the personal level
- 12:30Speaker 5: and the personal touch that that gives to the goal.
- 12:32Speaker 5: And I just listened to it before we came on air.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Ben Andatti's calling, oh man just chills, just the same
- 12:39Speaker 5: level of excitement his first goal to his record breaking goal.
- 12:42Speaker 5: And he's gonna call whenever it is Ovi's last goal.
- 12:45Speaker 5: So the bond that that is that those two share,
- 12:48Speaker 5: and obviously Craig as well. But to what I was
- 12:51Speaker 5: getting to with Craig was Craig was saying that the
- 12:53Speaker 5: coaching staff was like Kirk Muller and Spencer Carberry. They
- 12:57Speaker 5: were like, listen, you're gonna have to move around a
- 12:59Speaker 5: little bit and score from some different areas. And it
- 13:01Speaker 5: took him a while, and it took it by committee
- 13:03Speaker 5: for them to convince them, like, hey, man, you're gonna
- 13:05Speaker 5: have to kind of get some movement in the zone.
- 13:07Speaker 5: So it's the most variety I've seen him score goals.
- 13:09Speaker 5: And I was just glad to see his last to
- 13:12Speaker 5: the two. You know, the record Tye and the record
- 13:14Speaker 5: bring just be right from his bucking office. Just the
- 13:17Speaker 5: way that good Lord drew it up.
- 13:20Speaker 4: That's perfect. That's how you would have wanted to see
- 13:23Speaker 4: him score the goals.
- 13:23Speaker 3: One quick thing for me, I want to I want
- 13:25Speaker 3: to ask you about this. For those of you saying, Okay,
- 13:28Speaker 3: we've been hyping up the NHL has been hyping up
- 13:31Speaker 3: the Great Chase for weeks. Now it's over. We can
- 13:34Speaker 3: get over it. It's done, I would say this to
- 13:37Speaker 3: those of you saying that I don't have to follow
- 13:39Speaker 3: this anymore. An interesting little stat nugget ov. He would
- 13:44Speaker 3: have to score eight goals in his last five games,
- 13:47Speaker 3: which is a lot. But if anyone can do it,
- 13:49Speaker 3: he can. But if he's able to do that, it
- 13:52Speaker 3: would be his tenth career fifty goal season, which would
- 13:56Speaker 3: break a tie, a three way tie for the most
- 13:58Speaker 3: all time with Mike Bossi and some guy named Wayne Gretzky.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Can can he get there? I mean I'd score fifty next,
- 14:05Speaker 4: so we know, but can he do that?
- 14:06Speaker 5: Tell that's a badass stat that you found. That's pretty
- 14:09Speaker 5: that's pretty nuts. Could he do eight and five? I mean,
- 14:12Speaker 5: we didn't think he would get forty one at the
- 14:15Speaker 5: age of thirty nine. And you know, I was one
- 14:18Speaker 5: of those guys the past years being like he's done.
- 14:20Speaker 5: It's not that he's done, but it's gonna take him
- 14:22Speaker 5: four years to get the record, while he did it
- 14:24Speaker 5: in two and you know, could he get on a heater?
- 14:27Speaker 6: You know?
- 14:27Speaker 5: The only thing the reason why it is a possibility
- 14:30Speaker 5: is because now that he's going to play a little
- 14:32Speaker 5: bit looser and probably a lot more relaxed, because it
- 14:36Speaker 5: seemed just like the team wasn't the team hasn't been
- 14:39Speaker 5: playing as good. You know, they've lost five of their
- 14:41Speaker 5: last six. I'm pretty sure is that the number. They
- 14:43Speaker 5: haven't been playing the same hockey. They've been looking like
- 14:46Speaker 5: they've been. It's been weighing on them. And I saw
- 14:49Speaker 5: it in the Chicago game when they he scored the
- 14:51Speaker 5: record tiangle. The amount of relief that that team showed
- 14:55Speaker 5: and just absolutely dominated Chicago the rest of the game
- 14:58Speaker 5: I think was something apparent so I think they were
- 15:01Speaker 5: probably a little bit tired today, but I think the
- 15:03Speaker 5: rest of the away they're gonna be playing a lot
- 15:06Speaker 5: more better, a better brand of hockey, and a more
- 15:09Speaker 5: Washington Capital style hockey, because right now this isn't their game.
- 15:12Speaker 5: And I'm sure coaching staff's like, hey, it's done, like
- 15:14Speaker 5: let's play. So for that reason, he might get more
- 15:17Speaker 5: looks because of that, because it's a little bit more
- 15:19Speaker 5: laid back and loose. And but yeah, it's it's tough.
- 15:24Speaker 5: If if somebody can do it, it's ov. He needs
- 15:26Speaker 5: a he needs one hat trick in there somewhere and
- 15:29Speaker 5: then a couple of two goal games.
- 15:30Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 15:32Speaker 5: It's gonna be tough, But what a feat that would be.
- 15:34Speaker 5: You know, two records in one year, and you know
