- 0:02You're listening to the Gil Athletics Connections podcast
- 0:05with host Mike Cunningham. Track and field world UNL tuned
- 0:12in to our humble servant Mike Cunningham for another
- 0:16extraordinary message for Gil Athletics Connections.
- 0:21All right, you made it back here to the Gil Athletics Connections
- 0:23Podcast. And you know.
- 0:24All. Good things must come to an end,
- 0:28but don't, don't fret, don't worry.
- 0:30By end, I mean season 6. I think if I've calculated this
- 0:33correctly, this is going to be the last episode for 2025.
- 0:38So, you know, all good relays need to have a good anchor.
- 0:40And I think we got a pretty good anchor here today.
- 0:42I can't wait to get into that real quick for our new
- 0:46listeners. We've or candy new listeners
- 0:48every single day and I'm so, so grateful for that.
- 0:50For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mike Cunningham.
- 0:52I am the national business development manager here for Gil
- 0:55athletics and most people know me as the podcast guy.
- 0:57Some people call me the pod father of track and field
- 1:00podcast. So humbled for those who call me
- 1:02that. That's amazing.
- 1:03And some people just know me as the Twitter guy.
- 1:05So always can find me over on Twitter at Mike Cunningham and
- 1:08I've always I'm such a bad host. So I need to do this.
- 1:11Maybe this works, I don't know. If you enjoy this show, can you
- 1:15do me a favor? It really does help kind of with
- 1:17the algorithms and stuff. Can you rate and review like on
- 1:20Apple? You can do like up to five
- 1:22stars. Hopefully I've given you enough
- 1:24content here that's more than a three star, but we'll see.
- 1:27And then a review and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:28And honestly, all that to me is secondary.
- 1:31If you really want to help out the show and you want to help
- 1:34amplify these amazing men and women who choose to be track and
- 1:37field coaches, share, go find your favorite episode.
- 1:39Maybe it's going to be this one and share it with your Facebook,
- 1:42tick tock, Snapchat, whatever you crazy kids are using today
- 1:46and just share your favorite episode.
- 1:47That to me is way better than a rate in a review.
- 1:50But of course, appreciate all of that.
- 1:52So let's get into it. Let's end 2025 with a bang.
- 1:55Guess what? We will be back here in 2026.
- 1:58We've got season 7 upcoming and got some great things in store
- 2:00for you. And I'm excited.
- 2:02And I'm excited about today's guest.
- 2:03Help me welcome from Sprint free training.
- 2:05I got to find out what that means.
- 2:06I don't know what that means. Help me welcome the wise, the
- 2:08wonderful Mr. Bradley Moon Bradley.
- 2:11How are you, Sir? Mike, I'm good, brother.
- 2:13Thank you so much for having me. It's been long overdue, brother.
- 2:17So I'm I'm glad that we're finally getting to connect and
- 2:21do this. So I'm I'm excited to be here
- 2:23and to learn and just to share just a lot of different things.
- 2:26So thank you for having me. Absolutely.
- 2:27I appreciate your patience. You know, people reach out, you
- 2:30know, quote UN quote all the time about being on the show and
- 2:32you know the the, the goal is kind of like Pokémon to catch
- 2:35them all. I want every coach on the show,
- 2:37but I get, I only get this format, the long format, 52 * a
- 2:41year. So there's only 52 of those
- 2:43episodes. But I put everybody, everybody
- 2:46who reaches out, I put on the list.
- 2:48Unfortunately, that list is now 100 plus deep.
- 2:50So if you reached out today, at best it's two years before you
- 2:55get on the show. Now that's a good and bad
- 2:57problem, right? It's it's good.
- 2:58I got guaranteed content. I got I got 2 two more at least
- 3:01two more years guys at least, at least at least The bad part is
- 3:05some some guys get a little like, Hey, I thought you forgot
- 3:08about he's like, Nah, dude, I didn't forget about you, man.
- 3:10Trust me, you're on the list. It's so funny.
- 3:12So like when you reached out to me and I totally forgot that I
- 3:16was like, Oh yeah, you know what?
- 3:18I did reach out to Mike. Like.
- 3:20A while ago. And then I'm like.
- 3:23Sure. Yeah, the time.
- 3:24Is good. I was like I.
- 3:25Totally forgot I was like I'll somehow I'll I'll figure out to
- 3:28get on there but so. I love that you weren't just at
- 3:32home mad at me like that dude still hasn't got back.
- 3:34I appreciate that. It actually was kind of a
- 3:36secondary thought for you after a while.
- 3:38That actually makes me feel feel better because I I don't want to
- 3:40disappoint people. So I really hate that someone is
- 3:42like, you know, sitting at home going when's Mike calling?
- 3:44When's the caller? When's the call?
- 3:45That guy, he, he's not really putting me on the list.
- 3:47And it's like, no, no, I promise you that that's the problem.
- 3:50I put everybody on the list so the list gets along the timing.
- 3:53Is perfect. Now the, the that's a good segue
- 3:56about getting more people in the show.
- 3:57So you know, 52 a year on the long form.
- 4:00Every the past couple years I've done like a special episodes
- 4:06throughout the year to help get more people on.
- 4:07So like 2 years ago went out and and interviewed a high school
- 4:10coach from every state to talk about their outdoor state meets.
- 4:13So there was 50 actually 51 because of Washington, DC.
- 4:17That was 51 extra people to get on the show.
- 4:19That was almost like a, a year's worth, right?
- 4:21And this past year, 2025 S earlier this spring, you know,
- 4:25I, I, I think podcast and media for track and field are
- 4:28important. So I went out and, and reached
- 4:30out to his mini track and field podcast that I could find and
- 4:33all the ones that came back to me, we did a 15 ish minute, you
- 4:37know, about their show, like, what's your show about?
- 4:39Why should people listen to your show?
- 4:41And you know, how did you start your show?
- 4:42Things like that. So there was, you know, probably
- 4:44about 15 to 20 extra people. But what I've started this year
- 4:49to really hopefully help with this is, you know, I believe
- 4:51Bradley, that every coach has something to share, whether it's
- 4:55your very first day of practice ever or you are, you know, close
- 5:00to retirement. I think you have value to bring.
- 5:02Everybody has different kinds of value, right?
- 5:04I'm, I might not listen to career advice from that person
- 5:06whose first day is this year, right?
- 5:09But I think how that person got into coaching or the things that
- 5:13they're excited about, I think that has value.
- 5:15So we started earlier this year the Gill 1918 project.
- 5:19OK, So what that is same podcast.
- 5:21So same channel you're listening to here, not on YouTube and not
- 5:23on Twitch, but on the podcast audio only on Tuesday through
- 5:27Sunday. If we have the content, we
- 5:29publish 10 to 30 minute episodes.
- 5:31So much smaller, a little easier to listen to.
- 5:33This is a hard podcast to listen to, right?
- 5:36You're on the you're 5 minutes into the journey of at least an
- 5:39hour and a half. I get at least an hour and a
- 5:40half. I know my guy and I are going.
- 5:41We're banging this out for an hour and a half.
- 5:43I got a meeting so we can't go past two, but this one I feel
- 5:46like is gonna be a rich and deep 1.
- 5:47And I love that cuz your, your journey deserves that.
- 5:50That's why I don't put a cap on, you know, an hour or something
- 5:53like that. But Gill 1918 project, 10 to 30
- 5:55minute episodes, Bill. And it is like the Ted talks of
- 5:58track and field. So no subject is off off topic
- 6:01is off base. We've had people come on and
- 6:03talk about how to coach high jumpers better, how to organize
- 6:06cross country practices better X's and O's type of things.
- 6:09Super valuable. We've had this is one of my
- 6:12favorite ones. Dave Emiot from Kentonwood up in
- 6:15Michigan came on and talked about how to recruit kids to
- 6:19your team like your high school coach.
- 6:20Like that's a that's AI was just in Tampa MC in a clinic and I
- 6:25was talking to a coach from Ocala.
- 6:27This is amazing. I think he said 5:00-ish years
- 6:29ago, don't quote me all the time, but not long 5:00-ish
- 6:31years ago he started join the Ocala program with they had 15
- 6:36kids today 200. Holy.
- 6:40I believe healthy things grow. That's amazing.
- 6:43Now what's interesting is so like what I challenged him is to
- 6:47create a Gil 1918 project podcast is coming into 15 and
- 6:53having 200 things had to change staffing, how you coach kids,
- 6:57how you staggered practices. That's important for the you are
- 7:01going to go to a tract clinic and hear that you're not you
- 7:04should, but you're not but you're not.
- 7:06This is the place Gil 1918 project to do it.
- 7:08So if you're interested, if you're listening and Bradley,
- 7:09you should be doing this too. If you have something on your
- 7:13mind that you want to share. So maybe you, you, you have a
- 7:16killer tweet, but you know, it's only 180 characters or whatever
- 7:18and you can expound that for 10 to 30 minutes.
- 7:21Please reach out. I'll give the instructions on
- 7:23how to do it. And we publish them all every
- 7:24Tuesday through Sunday. And right now every Tuesday,
- 7:28we're so blessed for Charles Oliver Kocho, powered by Kocho.
- 7:31Every Tuesday he has someone that speaks and has been doing,
- 7:34you know, dietitian culture, bio mechanic, I mean, just amazing
- 7:39content. All right, the commercial's
- 7:41over. Let's get to today's guest,
- 7:43Bradley, my man. OK, so somewhere assuming that
- 7:48you're an athlete and here's what's cool, man, I'm just
- 7:50talking today. Here's what's cool.
- 7:52I just you. Know spotty senses are rolling.
- 7:54Bro, I'm just going. I'm going because I always say
- 7:57it's interesting. I always say, hey, assuming
- 8:00you're an athlete and we know what assuming does because you
- 8:03know this will be episode 340 something today, right?
- 8:08We've certainly learned that plenty of really, really good
- 8:10coaches were not athletes themselves, high school or
- 8:13college. So I don't want there ever to be
- 8:16like the thought of this prereq of like I didn't run track or I
- 8:20did, but I wasn't very good. By the way, that's my story
- 8:23wasn't very good. So I can't coach.
- 8:25I wasn't a great athlete like XY and Z.
- 8:27I was just reminded of this. I was MC in the Tampa Bay from
- 8:31the University of South Florida, and I got to introduce one of my
- 8:34favorite people, Vince Anderson. You know the name Vince
- 8:36Anderson? Yeah.
- 8:37He's not bad, right? You know, he's coached a couple
- 8:39of world champions and. Oh.
- 8:40Yeah, he's got. All the credentials and never
- 8:44did track. In fact, was a architect by
- 8:47education, like went to school to become an architect, was a
- 8:51track fan, but never did track went to schools to be an
- 8:54architect, became an architect. I love his story.
- 8:57Got laid off 3 times, which I'm like, Vince, maybe you weren't a
- 9:00very good architect. I need to tell him that one day.
- 9:02But get laid off 3 times and was like, you know what, I love
- 9:05track. Let me go see what it looks like
- 9:06to coach. And then went to Houston with
- 9:09the great Tom Talez. And you know, Vince's careers is
- 9:12a is a Hall of Fame or career. So I love that.
- 9:15So all that to say, Bradley, where does track and field start
- 9:19for you? So I was not a track and field
- 9:24guy early. I was actually a baseball and
- 9:26football. Guy.
- 9:27Oh, really? And but track and field started
- 9:30for me my senior year in high school, so I was, like I said, a
- 9:35baseball guy and. A football guy.
- 9:38And in my baseball career, we we decided to get a new coach in
- 9:44the year before we went to the Final Four in high school.
- 9:47I went to Salem High School in Conyers, GA and we got a new
- 9:51head coach and they they just wanted me to run bases.
- 9:55I remember they said. Well, we.
- 9:57We. We know you got speed, but we
- 9:58just want to have you run bases. And so my football coach for a
- 10:03long time was like, you should just run track, do track and
- 10:07field. You know, you need to let this
- 10:09baseball go. You want to go to you want to go
- 10:11to college on a football scholarship and track and field
- 10:14will be a great duo. And he had been like just
- 10:18dogging me like every year, 9th, 10th grade, 11th grade year.
- 10:23And then eventually I was like, you know, what, if I'm just
- 10:27going to run bases and, and I'm going to just run and
- 10:33participate in track and field. So my senior year, Mike, I went
- 10:37out and started, had no idea what track and field was, You
- 10:41know, it was just so foreign to me.
- 10:44I just always knew that we ran a lot first day or first day of
- 10:49practice. We did all the drills, the Ace
- 10:52Gibbs, all the warmers that you that people are familiar with.
- 10:55And I realized I've got to do that again on Tuesday,
- 10:59Wednesday, Thursday, Friday in January when it's cold and you
- 11:05know, I'm, I'm coming from a baseball in the spring.
- 11:08So we don't move that much. And.
- 11:13So, so that was a struggle, that was a huge struggle and all the
- 11:16six hundreds that our coach used to make us do.
- 11:19And man, the Lord just showed me success in that and then was did
- 11:26well enough to get a a track and field scholarship.
- 11:30Hold on there, don't go past me there yet 'cause I'm curious.
- 11:32Let's stay in high school for a second.
- 11:34I mean, you know, my obvious question here is right.
- 11:36I mean, so your your, your baseball, your football,
- 11:40baseball guy, your track coach. I'm sorry, your football coach
- 11:44is telling you all from freshman year.
- 11:46Hey, man, maybe maybe you shouldn't play baseball.
- 11:48Maybe you should run track. Now, on the one hand, that means
- 11:51like, oh, he saw that he had that you had speed.
- 11:53But I'm wondering if he also saw because then you go to baseball
- 11:57and they're like, hey man, instead of all that fielding and
- 11:59hitting stuff, why don't you just run bases?
- 12:01Yeah, I'm wondering, Bradley, because, you know, you're you're
- 12:04more of an adult now. It's it's hard as a sixteen 1718
- 12:07year old kid who has a lot of passions wants to be the next
- 12:10Eric. Well, you don't even know.
- 12:13Eric Yeah, yeah. Whatever, Whoever.
- 12:14I don't even know baseball, so whoever's.
- 12:15Good. I don't know much about about
- 12:17the more you want. Yeah, I don't like that stuff.
- 12:20Were you not very good at baseball?
- 12:21That's what I really want to ask.
- 12:24You know what I'm saying? I.
- 12:26Think. I think I was good.
- 12:29I I played a lot. More like my sophomore year
- 12:32because during the Final Four, I, I played a lot more and then
- 12:36somehow the, I guess the coach didn't necessarily think I was
- 12:39the best, you know, you got. A new coach too, right?
- 12:42Right. Yeah, a new coach, but I like to
- 12:43think that, you know, I guess I wasn't the best on the field.
- 12:47And so he said, well, this this gentleman has speed.
- 12:49Well, we'll just let him run bases.
- 12:51And so to answer your question, I probably wasn't as good as I.
- 12:55Thought yeah, but but you but you brought up a good point.
- 12:59You know, football, almost all of other sports are I always get
- 13:04subjective and objective, but I don't really understand.
- 13:07But it's more like it's more varied.
- 13:08Like I can look at a guy and be like, oh, that's a really good
- 13:10baseball player and someone else goes, that guy's trash.
- 13:12What are you talking about? Right.
- 13:13In track, it's like, oh, he ran 1020 versus 1220.
- 13:18He's good. He's not good.
- 13:20You know it's. There's less interpretation
- 13:24track and field where in baseball, I mean, obviously you
- 13:27were, you were playing 9/10/11. So it's not like, you know, it's
- 13:30like, man, really, I hope you like the bench because that's
- 13:33really obviously we're good. You know, in that sense that new
- 13:36guy comes in and says, yeah, you know, I got plans for Joey over
- 13:40there to be where you're supposed to be.
- 13:41But hey, there's a spot for you, you know, you can run bases or
- 13:44whatnot. So but yeah, just to kind of as
- 13:47when you're telling the baseball story.
- 13:48Then you said the football coach was like, man, he was dogged me
- 13:50to run track. I was like, man, was the
- 13:51football coach telling you, look, man, this baseball thing.
- 13:54All right, so you said you didn't even know much about
- 13:56track when you went over there. So you didn't like no, no
- 14:00friends run the track team. And you talk and be like, man,
- 14:02you guys do a lot of not. Not much though, huh?
- 14:04No, like when you asked me the question, I was thinking about
- 14:07the very first moment I was out there and I didn't know, you
- 14:12know much about how practice is structured.
- 14:14You, you know, just kind of going with open hands of like,
- 14:17OK, I guess we're going to do some drills.
- 14:19I guess we'll do some running. But I didn't know it was like
- 14:22that. Like we.
- 14:23How did you know, especially as a senior, like how did they know
- 14:28where to put you? And you know, like I, I remember
- 14:30when I first came out for football and I wasn't very big
- 14:34and they didn't even like tell me where to go, like go the
- 14:37running backs, go the receivers, etcetera.
- 14:38I went to the running backs because that's where my math
- 14:40teacher, coach Payne was. And so that's who I knew.
- 14:43And so I just went there. I did.
- 14:45I did not end up in the running backs.
- 14:47I quickly moved elsewhere. But I just like, I don't know.
- 14:50So I know this guy, I'll go there with track.
- 14:52And so it's different if you'd start as a freshman because it's
- 14:55like, Oh, I can make mistakes or you know, he's he's just air
- 14:58quotes a freshman. Let him go do long jump, see
- 15:00what happens, whatever, blah, blah.
- 15:01But senior year I got one shot. I don't know much about him.
- 15:05Maybe I know as a track coach like, oh, I've seen him play
- 15:07ball or football, like he's fast.
- 15:09But I still got to know. Do I put you in the short
- 15:11sprints, the longer sprints? I mean, fast.
- 15:13You could still be an 800 meter guy for for all I know.
- 15:15We'll find out. But hurdles, I mean, there's a
- 15:18lot of options here for you. How did they know like where to
- 15:21focus you on in such a short amount of time?
- 15:23So it was at the football, I was the rent, I was running back in
- 15:27in football. And so at that time, one of my
- 15:30senior year, I was a bigger guy. I was.
- 15:32Probably like a a buck. 90 and they said well you've got speed
- 15:37so you can be a sprinter do the the 1 to 200 and interesting
- 15:42enough they needed a triple. Jumper.
- 15:44And they wanted me to do. Triple jump.
- 15:46See, now that that that OK, I think this happens more than we
- 15:51care to, to actually talk about out loud because I was like,
- 15:54well, how do they identify you? They identify going, oh, we
- 15:56don't have any triple jumpers. This guy's athletic.
- 15:59Let's see what he does. That's exactly how it.
- 16:01Happened an 8 foot high jumper and we don't know because we
- 16:02don't have a really good system to figure out where people
- 16:05actually should go. It was, hey, we don't have any
- 16:07triple jumpers. Make the new guy.
- 16:09We only got one year. We can't break them, throw them
- 16:10over the triple jump. How'd you like that?
- 16:13That's a fun event. You know it it was it was
- 16:17different when you don't know like you're just open and you're
- 16:20like, sure, I'll try this and I. Enjoyed it a lot, yeah.
- 16:25That's a good point. You know, if I take the average
- 16:27person off the street and I say, hey, what's 100 meter dash?
- 16:30You know, 95 plus percent are going to know at least like, oh,
- 16:35it's the football field. Like I run straight, right.
- 16:37If I get 100 people, random people off the street and I say
- 16:40the long jump because it's in the name long, they may think
- 16:43it's like the broad, like, oh, you stand on the pit and you
- 16:45jump like no, you actually run or whatever, but you know,
- 16:47they're going to. I would venture to say if I
- 16:50asked 100 random people with a triple jump is 50% are going to
- 16:54get it wrong. Did you any clue what the triple
- 16:56jump was like when he said hey Bradley let's go try the triple
- 16:59jump what did you think? Like I.
- 17:00Was like, OK, so he takes me on the runway and you know, he's
- 17:06showing me all the different things, your steps.
- 17:08And, you know, Coach Jacobs is who I had.
- 17:11He's still at Salem High School now and he's a phenomenal coach.
- 17:15And he just worked on my my approach.
- 17:18I think we did more approach work then a lot of the jump
- 17:22because you say if you can get your approach.
- 17:24As. Strong as you are, you can get
- 17:27in the pit and all these different things.
- 17:29What? What did you think when they
- 17:30told you? Because if 50% would have said
- 17:34they have no clue what the trouble jump is out of that 50%
- 17:36as we started talking about it, 50% would have said, oh, you
- 17:39jump off of one leg, land on the other and the in reality, you
- 17:43know, you land on the same. What did you think when they
- 17:44Yeah, right. I mean, what did you think the
- 17:46first time there was like, Oh, yeah, no, no, rarely.
- 17:48You took off your right. I want you to land on your right
- 17:51again because that's an awkward. Yeah, that was awkward.
- 17:54It was an adjustment. I'm like.
- 17:56So I got to do what? What a crazy event, yeah.
- 18:03And so it, it was, it was a lot of fun and I had a good
- 18:07experience. Try and triple jump.
- 18:10It's not where I stay when I moved off to to college when
- 18:13we'll get there, but it was really fun.
- 18:16But since we're talking about that, it made me think about the
- 18:19very first track and field meet that I participated in.
- 18:23And we were at the Parkview Invitational and it was a relay
- 18:27event. And I remember going on the bus
- 18:30and we're going all day because everyone knows track and field
- 18:34events or days are all day long. And so we go when I was a part
- 18:39of the relays and did triple jump and I remember like if you
- 18:44got first or second you, they would give you like batons as
- 18:48like instead of instead of metals, they'd give out batons.
- 18:51Yeah. And so I.
- 18:53Really like custom batons. Custom batons with Parkview
- 18:56Invitational on it and I still have them at my my parents
- 18:59house. Like real colorful or like
- 19:01etched in? No, no, they're real colorful.
- 19:03They were like. Blue.
- 19:04All like the Parkview colors, like the blue, the orange.
- 19:07I I bet you that's my guy Joseph White.
- 19:10Really. You know Joseph White.
- 19:11I don't he's. He's in Georgia, I can't
- 19:13remember what part, runs a company called Sports Vans and
- 19:17does custom batons and really like amazing custom batons.
- 19:23And he's right there in Georgia. I get what?
- 19:24What year was this roughly? It's had to be 22,000 and. 10 I
- 19:31want to say I. Wonder if he was doing back?
- 19:33Then 2010, yeah. Like he he he does the Penn
- 19:35Relays batons now he did this is kind of the the weird part of
- 19:40podcasting. So we're recording this in
- 19:41November, but you're listening to this probably in December or
- 19:43maybe even January. In early December, we'll do A at
- 19:48the USTFCCCA convention. We'll do a a fun little event
- 19:51with my friend Chad Gunnelson, Coach Gunny and we'll do a hot
- 19:56wings kind of challenge, but also podcast.
- 19:59So I'm going to ask you questions while you're eating
- 20:01these hot wings. And the winner is getting a
- 20:03custom baton from my guy Joseph White.
- 20:06That's amazing. Like it's so cool.
- 20:09It wings on its sauce and it's so fun.
- 20:13And so we'll do that in December, but I I'll have to
- 20:16check in with him and say, when did you actually start doing
- 20:18this? Because it's a full-fledged
- 20:19business now. He's doing an amazing job.
- 20:21So anyway, shout out to Joseph White sports vains.
- 20:24Check them out. They do an amazing job.
- 20:26That's cool. So you got an, we got an award.
- 20:28Yeah, we got all that. And then it was crazy.
- 20:30So all the relays and the jumping happened when in the
- 20:33first couple of hours of the track and field event.
- 20:36Now remember Mike, I don't know much about track and field.
- 20:40This is my first event and I don't I didn't know.
- 20:42That we're I'm going to be there all day.
- 20:44So, so listen, Mike. The greatest trick?
- 20:47The greatest trick. All right, so I get done and I
- 20:52go over to Coach Jacobs and Coach Davis.
- 20:54He was also one of our coaches and I said, all right, coach,
- 20:58you know. The. 4 by.
- 21:00One is done, triple jump is done.
- 21:03I'm ready to go. It's it's time to go.
- 21:06And he's like, what are you talking?
- 21:07About we still got. The. 100. 1. 10100 hurdles the
- 21:13all the other. 4 by 4. I mean, the entire entire meat
- 21:17has not finished and I'm standing there and I'm like.
- 21:21Oh, I've got to be here all day. I didn't bring, I didn't bring
- 21:26no snacks. I didn't bring.
- 21:27You know, it was, I learned the hard way, Mike.
- 21:32And I was like, oh this is what track and field is.
- 21:34That's a good point. You know, we, I think about
- 21:38these clinics and things like this and it's like, you know, we
- 21:42talk about this, the top 5% of a workout or an athlete, man, the
- 21:47base, the, the, the basics are so important here is, you know,
- 21:53most of our kids are new, whether you're a senior or a
- 21:55freshman, they don't know, They think they know and you think
- 21:58maybe they know as a coach, but in reality, it's like they have
- 22:01no clue. Like I need to spell this out
- 22:04for them. Hey, we're going to leave at
- 22:058:00. We're going to get there at
- 22:069:00. It's not going to end till 6.
- 22:09Like, so you need to make sure you're bringing X&Y&Z and hey,
- 22:12it's going to be 90. So make sure you bring you know
- 22:15a shade and Y you know like things that you would if you air
- 22:20quotes should take for granted. You cannot.
- 22:23You. Cannot.
- 22:24You thought it was over? That's hilarious.
- 22:28Yeah. It is and so.
- 22:31But you came back though. I came back, it was.
- 22:33Something, and I think track and field does that to an athlete or
- 22:38a coach where. You you get.
- 22:41This, it's like addicting, like when you do, when you perform
- 22:46and you're around all the other athletes and coaches and
- 22:49everyone's running and jumping and growing and you're like,
- 22:52man. This is This is fun.
- 22:55And obviously when you when you win, that's fun and all that
- 22:57stuff. And I think that was part of it
- 23:00as well. Like if anyone, but I enjoyed
- 23:04the group of guys that I was with.
- 23:05We ran and did well, and I just started and started
- 23:11understanding tracking the field and I was like, man, you know,
- 23:14I'm actually running pretty well.
- 23:16You know, maybe I could. And so I was already on that
- 23:20track to go to college for football.
- 23:23And then the coach saw. That Hey, have you?
- 23:26You just started running your senior year and I'm like, yes,
- 23:30Sir. And he said, man, like we want
- 23:33to do, we want you to come up for track and field as well.
- 23:36So, and that's how I landed, you know, in college and we'll get
- 23:41to there in a minute. So first of all, you brought up
- 23:43a great point about kind of the addiction of track and field.
- 23:45There must be something to it cuz you know, we have a lot of
- 23:48minuses on our sport. And, and one of the, the ones
- 23:50that you know, grinds my gears the most is this, you know, 9:00
- 23:53in the morning till 6:00 PM. Kind of thinking because I'm
- 23:56always trying to, you know, how do we bring more people into
- 23:58the, to the fold? And who, you know, if you told
- 24:01me I'm a big college football fan, If you told me a college
- 24:04football game was 12 hours, I don't know that I'd be a college
- 24:08football fan. Honestly, I've got a 12 hour.
- 24:10I got other things. Can I get four games in that
- 24:12time period? But that's only one game.
- 24:13That's crazy, right? But it continues to be the most
- 24:17highly participated sport on the high school level when you
- 24:19combine boys and girls together on the college level when you
- 24:22had minimum together. So, so there is something,
- 24:24something to it. Now, before we get to college, I
- 24:27want to try to start figuring out your mindset as a 1718 year
- 24:30old kid where you and maybe even your other sports, you can
- 24:34answer this. Like when you talk about
- 24:35football and baseball coaches, looking back, were you asking
- 24:41like knowing now that you know, you become a track coach, were
- 24:43you asking questions, you know, curiosity questions of like,
- 24:47like, why did we do that? Not not, not not questioning
- 24:51like, hey, coach, why are you doing this?
- 24:52But like, hey, I wonder why did we do that workout today?
- 24:55But then we did this kind of radically different workout the
- 24:57next day or even on the football side.
- 24:59Hey coach, on 3rd and three, I see you called the trap.
- 25:04But then on 4th in in inches, why did you decide to punt this
- 25:08time versus, you know, Smash Mouth on it?
- 25:11You know what I'm saying? Like questions that would make
- 25:13someone go, oh, this guy's going to be a coach one day.
- 25:14Were you asking those type of questions?
- 25:16By the way, you're 1718 year olds.
- 25:17You got all the grace in the world that you were just like,
- 25:19you know, run ball, C ball, run ball.
- 25:21Yeah, I. At that time, I wasn't asking
- 25:24those questions. I was.
- 25:26How I? I was geared at 1718 years old
- 25:30was like I, if my coach is required me to do this, then I'm
- 25:33going to do my best in that. I'm not going to ask questions
- 25:36because at in that point, he is the coach.
- 25:39I, he or she is the coach, I'm the athlete.
- 25:42And if he wants, he or she wants me to run through that brick
- 25:45wall and get that whatever, I'm going to do that.
- 25:48And that's how I was as I approached football and track
- 25:52and field and in my career. Yeah, that that's like I said,
- 25:56all grace. You know, it's always
- 25:58interesting because, you know, the spoiler alert is everybody
- 26:00on the podcast becomes a track coach.
- 26:01I'm always like as a 17 and some 17 year olds.
- 26:05And I think it's not necessarily personality, but how we're
- 26:08wired. Some even as 17 year olds are
- 26:10like, man, I was fascinated with why we did, you know, block
- 26:12starts on Monday, but then, you know, core work on Tuesdays and
- 26:16then came back with Max speed on what, Like why?
- 26:18Why didn't we just do acceleration every day or what?
- 26:21You know, like. You're not.
- 26:22Questioning, they're like, I'm just trying to why?
- 26:24Like it's working, so I want to know why.
- 26:26And lo and behold, they become track coaches.
- 26:28But again, there's many, many ways there.
- 26:30So OK, so you're not necessarily asking questions of like
- 26:34curiosity at this point, correct?
- 26:37So what are you thinking as you start looking at college?
- 26:39What are you thinking? Where'd you look at?
- 26:42Where'd you go? And what were you thinking of
- 26:44becoming a scientist, a business owner?
- 26:47You know what, Whatever we think is 18 year olds.
- 26:50I think for me, so I want to be clear as I was AI would consider
- 26:56myself a football guy when I was 1718 and track and field was
- 27:00just something that at that time like, OK, baseball's not
- 27:04working. This is something that I'm just
- 27:05going to do because it will benefit me for football, because
- 27:08my whole thought process at that time was like I'm going to
- 27:11college to play football and so. Now, did you crazily think
- 27:16you're going to play in the NFL? There was later in in my
- 27:20college. I do think there was a moment
- 27:22there was some week we'll get there.
- 27:24Yeah, that's. Interesting.
- 27:25OK. And so, but no, I just wanted I
- 27:27wanted to get a scholarship. I wanted to do football.
- 27:29I wanted to, you know, help my parents out because they gave me
- 27:33so much all that. And so so when the track and
- 27:37field coach caught from college, called and said, hey, like, I
- 27:43know you're signing with us for football, but what you've done
- 27:47your senior years, it's quite impressive.
- 27:49This be someone who's never done this before.
- 27:52And we would like to participate in a scholarship with you for
- 27:55track and field. And I went to Shorter University
- 27:59in Yeah. Did you really I?
- 28:01Did. I did.
- 28:02And so so I was just in my mind like, OK, that's cool.
- 28:05That's scholarship football. Scholarship for track and field.
- 28:08That sounds great, but I wasn't thinking about track and field
- 28:11like I do now. Small.
- 28:13Football in the forefront of mine.
- 28:15Track and. Field, it's just, it's just
- 28:17something. Fun.
- 28:18It's going to pay some of the bills.
- 28:19So correct. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:21Yeah. And so that was my process going
- 28:23into college. Did you look elsewhere as well
- 28:26or was it shorter from the jump? So I'm glad you.
- 28:30So originally when I was getting recruited, guarding the web was
- 28:34one on my was on the list and I remember getting the call.
- 28:39I think at the time, I think his name was Coach Foster.
- 28:42I think he was the DB coach at the time and I remember him
- 28:46calling me and he says, hey, look, we've got your highlight
- 28:49film. You know, there wasn't a big
- 28:51huddle thing. You all right now you know, you
- 28:54have to make the tapes and send them all and and that nature.
- 28:57So he said, I got your film. He said you've done some really
- 29:00good stuff and we want to bring you on a visit, but there is a
- 29:04running back that we want to bring up before.
- 29:07It's like there's there's three of you guys.
- 29:10We've already one said no, the second one will bring it up, and
- 29:13you're going to be the third one that we want to bring up.
- 29:17And so I was really excited about, OK, you know, Gardner,
- 29:21well, you know, you know, all these different things.
- 29:23And so I remember him calling me and he said, hey, Bradley, you
- 29:27know, just bad news. That gentleman, you know, took
- 29:31this, you know, we're going to bring him up.
- 29:32He's accepted. So we don't have a spot.
- 29:35For you but I. Do know, and this is what he
- 29:38said, he said. I do know Phil Jones at Shorter
- 29:40University that is looking for Someone Like You and I would
- 29:46love to tell him that he should have you and and all.
- 29:48That that's how it worked. Dude, that's a great story.
- 29:53Because, you know, we're hearing all these bad things about
- 29:58college coaches right now. They're just, you know, they're
- 30:00not attentive, they're not really helpful.
- 30:02They're only out for themselves. In fact, just the last night we
- 30:06got into a debate or I like to stir debates.
- 30:09I like to create communication about college coaches,
- 30:13specifically track and field, not returning emails of, of
- 30:16athletes. And and again, I have, you know,
- 30:18I see both sides. I talked to high school coaches
- 30:20all day and I talked to college coaches all day.
- 30:22I was just at a, a different clinic up in Kankakee where a
- 30:25college coach said he gets 300 emails a day.
- 30:28Now, even if he's exaggerating because that's that's a lot,
- 30:31that's a lot, that's a lot. But even if he's exaggerating by
- 30:34double and he's only getting 150, that's still a lot.
- 30:39Still a lot, right? And so when we talk about our
- 30:42college coaches not returning emails, I still don't like, I
- 30:46think I have judgement on it because I can't stand that like
- 30:48meaning, meaning when someone emails me, it, it, it, it grates
- 30:52at me until I can get a response, even if it's a
- 30:54response, you know, sometimes the response is no, hey, I can't
- 30:56do that, whatever. But I, if it's sitting in my
- 30:58inbox, it hurts me not to get a response.
- 31:01It really don't give a response. So I have a little bit of
- 31:04judgement of our coaches who don't respond.
- 31:07And then there were a lot of college coaches that came in and
- 31:09was like, hey, man, you know what, it works both ways.
- 31:11I've emailed high school coaches and they don't respond.
- 31:13And it's like, OK, that's not good either guys.
- 31:15But so I you hear the story of a college coach, a football coach
- 31:18here in this example, who you know, and it must be tough for
- 31:23football, right? Like you can only have so many
- 31:25running backs, you can only have so many options in lineman,
- 31:27etcetera. And you got to make sure you
- 31:29have your third, fourth, fifth choice on the line because you
- 31:32don't always get first and second choice, right.
- 31:35But for him to first of all, to communicate back with you and
- 31:37say, hey, Bradley, I'm sorry, I got bad news.
- 31:39Like he could have just goes to Judd and correct you saying I'm
- 31:42busy, whatever and he is busy. So.
- 31:45He's busy. Yeah.
- 31:46But for him to a communicate with you love that.
- 31:48And then to me, this is like the extra step, like, oh, you're not
- 31:53just a good guy. You care.
- 31:56I know this coach. I trust him.
- 31:59You would do well with him. Let me call him or, you know,
- 32:02call him and let him know that I said, you know, that's that's an
- 32:05extra step. And I wish more of us could take
- 32:07those extra. It is.
- 32:08And you know, I've never had. That was the last conversation
- 32:11that I ever had with Coach Foster you.
- 32:12Know. Is that right?
- 32:13Yeah. And so you know that.
- 32:16Wait, do you know where he is today?
- 32:17I have no idea where he. Is.
- 32:18Bro, I'm going to challenge you. Find him.
- 32:21Well, if he, if he's still coaching, it's super easy.
- 32:24Yeah, if he's still coaching. But even in today's world with
- 32:26Facebook and etcetera, find him and just shoot him a message and
- 32:31be like, hey, you probably don't even Remember Me, but here's
- 32:34what you did for me. And by the way, that led to X&Y,
- 32:37it like like I owe a little bit of my career, my life.
- 32:41You taking that because you could have, you could have just
- 32:43said, Hey, sorry, not sorry and moved on.
- 32:46Thank you. You know, it's easy for us to do
- 32:48the negatives in life, right, to leave a bad review and stuff
- 32:51like this. It's a little bit harder to take
- 32:52that the extra step, just like he took for you that extra step
- 32:55and just be like, hey, man, just thanks.
- 32:57Just want to say thank you. That will make that dude's day.
- 33:00For real and you guys? I haven't thought about it.
- 33:03Since we're going down this path of my journey and I mean that
- 33:08that was such a blessing from the Lord because that has has
- 33:11been a huge piece on where I'm at today and and all the
- 33:15different, all the different things that we'll have to.
- 33:17Discuss. So you go to very cool
- 33:19university, Shorter university. Was it Scott Bird back then?
- 33:23It sure. Was.
- 33:24Scott. Bird and Scott Bird and coach
- 33:26Black, Rochelle Black. Was.
- 33:28Oh, Rochelle was there. I didn't know Rochelle.
- 33:30Yeah. Rochelle was there.
- 33:31We're. Still we.
- 33:32Still talk. Like.
- 33:33Often I love Rochelle. He's a good dude.
- 33:35I love him. It was because I believe that's
- 33:38where Nigel Talton went to school.
- 33:40Was he before you? No, he came in, so I was there
- 33:45one year before he transferred in and he was.
- 33:47From a. Four by one team he won
- 33:49nationals with. You know, he's been on the
- 33:51podcast. I did not know Nigel had been on
- 33:54the podcast. Bro, he's Mr. Freeze.
- 33:56I know, I know. When it was early in the
- 33:58podcast, you know, I didn't have a list 100 long.
- 34:02Trust me, no one knew what the heck I was doing.
- 34:04And I don't even know how. I must have just, you know, he
- 34:07had that viral clip and I think I must have heard somewhere that
- 34:10he was a track dude. And I was like, well, that'd be
- 34:11a cool dude to have on there. And yeah, I had Nigel or Mr.
- 34:14Freeze from the Braves on the on the podcast.
- 34:16Nigel. Is we, we do, you know, fantasy
- 34:19football every year. So he's part of the, the, the 12
- 34:23guys that we get together. So, you know, there's a lot of
- 34:25talk talking. Sure, I can see that so.
- 34:27Yeah. So Nigel, yeah, I know we spend
- 34:30a lot of time with him and as I mentioned, he was part of our
- 34:33four by one team, the Nationals years ago and he.
- 34:37Was all right so you go to shorter.
- 34:39What do you start majoring in what's what at first?
- 34:41As a freshman, what are you thinking about becoming?
- 34:43It was simple sports management, you know, business, things of
- 34:46that nature. I thought I wanted to be a
- 34:48sports agent at one time and I was like.
- 34:51You got to be a. You know, you got to be a
- 34:53lawyer. You got to read a lot at that
- 34:54time. I don't want to read that much,
- 34:58but it started there and then it I thought I wanted to be an
- 35:02athletic. Director at some.
- 35:05Point And then I landed on, you know, business and working with
- 35:09startups and I'm sure we'll get there when I graduated.
- 35:12And, and, but, but no, I'm not hearing coaching necessarily
- 35:16like I hear administration, which I love sports agent, which
- 35:20is very, I don't say very common, but not uncommon.
- 35:23At that clinic I was at in Tampa, I met one of the South
- 35:26Florida athletes, and he had just graduated.
- 35:28And I was like, oh, what do you want to like?
- 35:29What are you trying to do? And he's like, yeah, I want to
- 35:31become a sports agent. And I was like, cool.
- 35:33I was like, have you interned? Like, have you called it a
- 35:35sport? He's like, no, I haven't gotten
- 35:36that far. And I was like, you're probably
- 35:38not going to become a sports agent.
- 35:40No, no, but no. But no coaching like.
- 35:43Coaching. Was not.
- 35:44On the radar at all, M0. You know it was, you know I'm
- 35:50playing football, I'm running track and you.
- 35:52Know all four years you do both. I did both.
- 35:54All four years, Yeah. And coaching was nowhere to be
- 35:59found. Really.
- 36:00And you had, you know, I know Scott well and Coach Blackwell.
- 36:04So you had like, you know, career coaches, people who love
- 36:08coaching right in front of you. And you know, I'm sure your
- 36:11football coaches were real good as well.
- 36:12And never you never looked at one of those guys and be like, I
- 36:17want to do like that guy looks like he's having fun, like I
- 36:19want to do that. No, no, I, I.
- 36:23I, I didn't, I think I was always been on the journey of
- 36:26like, OK, this is the season that I'm in and I want to enjoy
- 36:30it, but also like, OK, I was thinking more of like, what's my
- 36:33career like? Like I was sharing with athletic
- 36:35director of sports administration business.
- 36:38My mind has always been turning for that and and sports in
- 36:42college where me was just an Ave. for me to to to get there.
- 36:46If you will. Yeah, you you say that, but you
- 36:48also kind of hinted earlier that for some part you thought maybe
- 36:52the NFL was going to be the calling.
- 36:53I did. There was one year, my junior
- 36:57year in college, where I thought that there might be a chance
- 37:02because I did those little, little regional combines and
- 37:06then there was a couple looks going on and I had a pretty good
- 37:09year as a running back at Shorter.
- 37:13And then I thought, well, OK, well.
- 37:15Maybe it, you know, it wasn't something a dream of mine.
- 37:18That's like, OK, I'm getting some attention.
- 37:20That could be something I don't. And then and that was my junior
- 37:25year in college. But then my senior year, I
- 37:29didn't love football like I loved it anymore.
- 37:32And I remember it was homecoming game and me and my mother were
- 37:36standing there for homecoming and we were hugging.
- 37:41And I told her I said I don't. I don't.
- 37:43Love it like. That no more.
- 37:44Wow. I don't love it.
- 37:47And so, you know, I told her that, you know, even if I wanted
- 37:52to try to pursue and, you know, I mean, those regional combines
- 37:55are cool for a lot of you know, but you know, the thought or
- 37:58idea of it maybe. But then I realized I didn't
- 38:02love it anymore. And so I was.
- 38:04I was shutting that door. Why?
- 38:07And what I mean by is I'm not hearing like a lot of times I'll
- 38:10hear when someone falls out of love of, of a sport, they're
- 38:14frustrated because they have a lot of injuries.
- 38:16Or maybe I, I joined this running back for this team and
- 38:20we were O and 10. And it just frustrated me that,
- 38:23you know, I needed all 11 offensive line offensive people,
- 38:26not just me. I'm not hearing that
- 38:28necessarily. I mean, you had a pretty good
- 38:29career and I'm not hearing injuries.
- 38:31No, I didn't really have a thank the Lord I didn't have major
- 38:35injuries. I always wrote my ankles for a
- 38:37time or two. So I really have bad ankles but.
- 38:41No, I just. You know, I think.
- 38:42The you didn't have bad coaching experience, guys that were just
- 38:45dogging you no matter what and you're not having academic
- 38:48issues. This just kind of a, you know,
- 38:51things have a time frame. So it just got to a point where
- 38:54it's like, you know, this might be it for football.
- 38:55This might be it. And I think I, I think it was, I
- 38:59think is a little bit of different things, like, OK,
- 39:02well, I, my journey is coming to, I'm just always thinking
- 39:06about the future. I think that's like, what's
- 39:08next? And I like this could be it.
- 39:10But no, no major injuries, no academics.
- 39:14And when I'm playing, I'm like, you know what?
- 39:17You know, this, this, this ship has run its course.
- 39:22This is fascinating to me because especially for young
- 39:25people, you know, as you get to your senior year, you're 2122
- 39:28ish year years old, maybe 23. It's easy.
- 39:32Even as adults, by the way, I'm putting this on young people,
- 39:35but even as adults, we get caught up in in what our
- 39:37identity is. And so, you know, you mentioned
- 39:40you answered a question that I ask a lot of times of football
- 39:43slash track people. Are you a football player who
- 39:45runs track or a track person who runs football?
- 39:47You were definitely a football player who ran track, but that
- 39:50became that was your identity. Like when people looked at
- 39:52Bradley Moon, it was like, oh, he's a football player.
- 39:54Yeah. Oh, like I'm sure your senior
- 39:56year of high school. How many times?
- 39:59Hey, where are you going to go play ball That I just watched
- 40:01the Florida State game. I think you could play Florida
- 40:03State. Why did you go and visit there?
- 40:04All this kind of stuff, right. I mean, like every day.
- 40:06I remember in high school they didn't ask me.
- 40:09But you know, I had a good friend who was really good.
- 40:11They asked him every day, what are you?
- 40:13Where are you going to play ball?
- 40:14Not even where you going to school?
- 40:15Where are you going to play ball?
- 40:16It becomes your identity. How did you you made seemingly a
- 40:21very mature. Even before it was over, during
- 40:25senior year decision of like, I'm not sure I love this
- 40:28anymore. Kind of meaning like this really
- 40:30isn't my identity. Yeah.
- 40:32Maybe you didn't know what your identity really was, Correct.
- 40:34You seem to be so far, just listening to some language, A
- 40:38man of faith. That's who our identity should
- 40:40be in. Absolutely.
- 40:41Maybe whether there was a turning point there has it
- 40:43always been in there? I mean this is a pretty mature
- 40:46thing for a 21 ish 2 year old kid.
- 40:50I think a big part of it is, is my faith, but I, I.
- 40:55Didn't want. Athletics just to be who I who I
- 40:58was or who I. AM.
- 41:00You know my my parents, they, you have to be bigger than you
- 41:04know this sport, you know your. Character.
- 41:06Is all that matters. I don't care how many touchdowns
- 41:09you score, how many you know, how fast you run it, you know in
- 41:13100 or 200 meter dash, you know that cannot be your identity.
- 41:17You know what is your character when someone's not around?
- 41:21You know what are they saying about you behind closed doors
- 41:24and so. What's what's mom and dad do?
- 41:27Or or during this time frame what they do for a living?
- 41:29So my dad was a he was a retired state trooper for Georgia.
- 41:34So he did that for 33 years. That's a tough dude, man.
- 41:38Come on. OK.
- 41:39He was tough, he was tough as nails and me and my brother, we.
- 41:43You guys weigh nothing. We, I'm telling you, we ain't
- 41:46got away with anything, Mike. So he did that for 33 years, and
- 41:50then he retired and then he went to culinary school.
- 41:55Shut up, that's so cool. He went to culinary school and
- 41:58he graduated. He's a chef and he doesn't he,
- 42:02he says I'm a chef in my own home.
- 42:03So he he cooks all the stuff at home and gadgets.
- 42:06Did he go to like Johnson and Wales or something or?
- 42:08He went to the One is a Culinary school of arts here in Atlanta.
- 42:12Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
- 42:13Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:14And so he did that. And so he he did that years ago.
- 42:19And then my mom, she is an accountant.
- 42:22She's been in an accounting where ACPA for as long as I've
- 42:25been living and she's Southern Company now and she's got about.
- 42:29Maybe 3:00 to. Five years left before she
- 42:32retires, so super analytical. Correct.
- 42:35Not much gets by her either. No, no.
- 42:38We got a lot of we got a lot. Of whoopings growing up.
- 42:40She's a yeah, she's a cop of numbers, right?
- 42:43So I mean, she understands like, I'm sure that that sounds like
- 42:46the type of mom that when you're looking at college, you see
- 42:48someone. OK, well, it cost this and
- 42:50they're offering you XI mean to figure out why.
- 42:52And we only got this part of Y or whatever, you know?
- 42:54Yeah, dude, you have a good mom and dad.
- 42:57Like, yeah, they're really looking out over you.
- 43:00And you said brother. Yeah.
- 43:01Yeah. And so, so that's what they did.
- 43:03And so. That's.
- 43:04Kind of my thought process as I was transitioning out of a
- 43:08football and. Just but not but not track.
- 43:11I'm not hearing OK. So it's interesting.
- 43:14So at that time, remember I was, so I was going to college for
- 43:20football, not just for track. Track was something that I was
- 43:23just doing. But then when college, my
- 43:26passion for track, they started switching interesting enough.
- 43:31So football became less track and field and I think that's
- 43:35because of when we won a national championship there with
- 43:39with Nigel and all that, the four by one team.
- 43:41And so I began to enjoy that success like most people do when
- 43:46you have success. And so it started.
- 43:48Switching. And at that time, I was like,
- 43:51you know. Football, but I enjoy track.
- 43:55And so I wanted to focus more on that.
- 43:59Are you becoming more of a track fan?
- 44:02Like now you know who, what, what, what year did you graduate
- 44:06high school? I graduated.
- 44:07In 2010. So are you starting to learn
- 44:11like, oh, I see who? I understand who Justin Gatlin
- 44:14is, and I understand Usain Bolt? And yeah, so you started like,
- 44:18because it didn't sound like in high school, you knew.
- 44:21I ain't no nothing. So you're starting to like
- 44:24you're getting into the culture of track and field, the culture
- 44:26of this college as well. And so they begin to shift and
- 44:30so. But yeah, that's how it.
- 44:33Was it was more like 1, I thought was like my focus and
- 44:37then it just starts switching as track and field being a a sport
- 44:41that I enjoyed, but I still weren't thinking about coaching
- 44:45at all. It's just something that I I
- 44:46prefer over the other. What a healthy example though,
- 44:50you know, even actually, you know what, this is interesting.
- 44:53I just kind of put these two together.
- 44:55I'm always afraid of people that get that feel stuck in
- 44:58something, whether it's a job, a major, a sport, because it
- 45:01becomes their identity and they feel like they're trapped or too
- 45:04far. It's, you know, I can't switch
- 45:07now, etcetera, etcetera. But knowing that things run out
- 45:10of time sometimes right now, some things shouldn't, right?
- 45:13Marriages, your faith, etcetera. But your job or a major or a
- 45:17sport that I participate in might run out.
- 45:21That's OK. You know, you might not play
- 45:23football until you're 80. Some people do.
- 45:25I'm sure there's an 80 year old league out there somewhere, but
- 45:29that it's healthy to explore other passions just like your
- 45:32dad did, right? 30 plus years on the trooper
- 45:35force and then was like, you know what, that was fun and all,
- 45:38but you know who I am? I'm really chef dad.
- 45:40I want to really learn this more because easily look and you know
- 45:45your dad better than anybody. I I could see.
- 45:46I've never met him, but I could see someone like your dad going,
- 45:50Dude, that ship of sail. I want to do that in high
- 45:52school. I wanted to become a trooper.
- 45:54Had a great career. I'm too old, you know?
- 45:57Old dog, new. Old dog, new tricks new.
- 45:59Tricks. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:00And. Instead was like, what's
- 46:02stopping me from what? He was probably 50 something at
- 46:05that point. What's stopping me from 50
- 46:06something to learning something new?
- 46:08I have a passion for it and he did it.
- 46:10And here's the same story in a younger version of you going,
- 46:13hey, man, football's been awesome.
- 46:14Like thank God for football. I, I might not be in college or
- 46:17this college, if it weren't for football, might not have
- 46:20explored track the way I do if it weren't for football.
- 46:23But maybe football is not primary anymore.
- 46:26There's other things in my life. That's a, that's a, that's a
- 46:28great lesson for our coaches that feel stuck coaching track
- 46:32and field or feel stuck that they're a football coach who
- 46:34coaches tracking, which is that it was the other way around.
- 46:37I wish I was a track coach who did a little football.
- 46:40That's a great example that it's, it's possible no matter
- 46:43what age and your dad shows us that.
- 46:45So that's really cool. I love it.
- 46:47It's been, it's been. It's it was the interesting
- 46:49experience and I just, I think the, the biggest thing for me is
- 46:52just always like, OK, like I know this is a it's it's season.
- 46:56Like when you think about the sports, like every like all of
- 47:00us, you know, we may not, we're a lot of us won't be pro
- 47:04athletes of any kind. Most of us, we know and you know
- 47:07the percentage better than anyone from track and field or
- 47:10football or whatever the sport might be, but we will be
- 47:13professionals and other things. And so my goal deep down in the
- 47:19foundation of who I was like, this is just a season.
- 47:21But what is Bradley 20-30 years for?
- 47:26You know, I don't want to be the, you know, you remember back
- 47:29in the day when I was doing XY and ZI never wanted that to be
- 47:33my. Story.
- 47:33Yeah, yeah. That's your only story.
- 47:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, but anyway, that's just kind
- 47:39of the pivotal. Point So when you graduated,
- 47:41what do you, because I don't see you, I don't hear you saying,
- 47:45yeah, so I'm now going to go find a coaching job.
- 47:46What do you what's your first step out of after graduating
- 47:49college? So I.
- 47:52Started working with a moment so as I mentioned a business I was
- 47:56had a business degree sports management and then I got a call
- 48:00from this these two gentlemen that had just bought this glove
- 48:05company they they made baseball and softball gloves and they
- 48:08customized them and they called me say.
- 48:11Hey, we've got this. Yearly internship where you
- 48:15know, for this little sports company that meet that we bought
- 48:18and your name came up. It was in Rome and I was like,
- 48:23sure, sure, I'll, I'll do it. And and at this time, this was
- 48:272015. They said, look, we don't have
- 48:29an office so you get to work from home.
- 48:31Oh wow. And I'm like work from home
- 48:34like. What is that?
- 48:35Yeah. What is that?
- 48:36Two years ago, right, Ten years ago.
- 48:38And I was telling like my parents about, hey, I just got
- 48:40this yearly internship and I get to work from home and they're
- 48:43like. What?
- 48:44Yeah, especially accountant and cop.
- 48:46They're like, wait a minute, that doesn't exist.
- 48:48What doesn't exist? And so I was working from home
- 48:52and, you know, there we had certain sessions we would go in
- 48:54and I did that for a year. What were you doing?
- 48:57Were you marketing? Were you product development?
- 49:00What? So it was a little bit of
- 49:01everything. So it was just the 2 owners and
- 49:03myself and they had just bought this business.
- 49:06And so I was the marketing guy, the OPS guy, sales, I mean,
- 49:10everything that a a business would do, I was doing it.
- 49:15And so it was really great for me because I learned a lot about
- 49:18entrepreneurship. At that, at that.
- 49:21Time because these other gentlemen had already had other
- 49:25businesses that they bought and sold and this is just something
- 49:27they wanted to try to see if they could do something.
- 49:30And so I just gravitated to learn a lot from them did that
- 49:34for a year and then when I didn't know what to do I started
- 49:40teaching. I started teaching at A at a
- 49:46Christian School here in town, Unity Christian School up here
- 49:48in Rome. And I was the PE teacher and
- 49:52health teacher and then started coaching football, started
- 49:55coaching track, track and field. And that's where I started
- 50:00dabbling in coaching and, but I wasn't set out to be a coach or
- 50:07to really have a passion for it. What was the first?
- 50:10Can you remember, like the first, maybe not necessarily the
- 50:13first day, but the first month of of coaching, whether it's
- 50:16football or or track and field, because you know, it's, it's one
- 50:19thing to be an athlete. It's different when you're on
- 50:21the other side. You know, to your point about,
- 50:24you know, most athletes, young people are, you know, C ball,
- 50:28hit ball. Coach tells me to run, I run,
- 50:30Coach tells me to jump, I jump. I don't question it.
- 50:32I just do it. Now you got to be on the side of
- 50:35telling young people to jump and you have in your mind why, you
- 50:39know, to do this or run that. What did like, was it like a
- 50:44fish to water like when you first started coaching?
- 50:46You're like, oh man, that your brain has to switch differently.
- 50:49Yeah, yeah, yeah. How was that first experiences
- 50:51for you? I.
- 50:52Think for track and field it. Was OK.
- 50:55Like I thought about all the things that Coach Bird, Coach
- 50:59Black will make us do and I and you know that I has phenomenal
- 51:05coaches. They were great.
- 51:06And so I was like, OK. What would they?
- 51:08Do and so this was the warm up. These are all the So my mom
- 51:12began to think like OK. Coach.
- 51:14Bird. Coach Black.
- 51:16These are the things they made us do and we had.
- 51:18Success. So let me pull that from them
- 51:22and just put it on some middle school and high school kids and
- 51:25just see what. Happened very common.
- 51:26Very common. And so that's what I did.
- 51:29I would say to answer that question, like the first 30 days
- 51:32of being a track and field coach.
- 51:37You're a smart guy, did you when you're right in town?
- 51:40So are you calling Rochelle and Scott and like, hey, man, I was
- 51:44thinking about doing this. What do you think about that?
- 51:46Are you going online? You know, you have the luxury of
- 51:48you have YouTube at this point, things like that.
- 51:50But what are you doing in regards to like almost coaching
- 51:53education? I don't want to ask that
- 51:54question yet right now, but this is just, you know, learning how
- 51:57to walk for crying out loud. Correct.
- 51:58I like it. So it was.
- 52:01More leaning on them, Coach Byrd and Coach Black.
- 52:04And I've had all the types of workouts that they, you know, I
- 52:07started just looking at all the workouts they had, they'd given
- 52:10us and I was like, OK, this is how they did it.
- 52:15I remember. Shoot.
- 52:17Like the summer training program that we got from them, I just
- 52:20used that as as a foundation because you know, you don't know
- 52:23what you don't know. And so this is this seems to be
- 52:27helpful and I'll tweak a couple things here and there, but I
- 52:30just use their blueprint like the.
- 52:32First year of coaching. I just use what they would, what
- 52:36I got from them all the years. Probably very common.
- 52:39We you're exactly right. You don't know anything, but you
- 52:41know how you were coached? Well, especially if you had a
- 52:45good experience with it's like, well, it worked for me.
- 52:47Correct. Let's try that.
- 52:49What else? What else is it?
- 52:50It's actually probably the safer way versus just like, well, I'm
- 52:52just going to make it up. Screw what my coaches did, I'm
- 52:54going to make it up. So it is probably the safer way,
- 52:57especially if you had a good experience and good results from
- 52:59it. So how long were you at this
- 53:01school? So I only I only.
- 53:03Taught there for two years, but I still coach their track and
- 53:08field team to this day. Is that right?
- 53:10Yeah, so. There for two years.
- 53:12Go ahead. Go ahead, Mike.
- 53:13Yeah, well, no, because it still feels like you're not settled on
- 53:16a career at this point. It's still early.
- 53:18So an intern, you're teaching. So what do you do after two
- 53:22years of teaching though? So after two years I get.
- 53:25This call. From another gentleman who
- 53:28actually he taught my wife. He was a professor at Shorter
- 53:31and, and he said, Hey, I'm starting this company.
- 53:35So I want you to understand like this, this business always has
- 53:38been like gravitating the start of life has always, the Lord has
- 53:41just always put in my path. So I got a call, he said, hey,
- 53:45we started this company. It's a data science company and
- 53:49we want to bring you on and be a data analyst and all that.
- 53:54And that offer actually happened the first year of my teaching
- 53:57when I was at Unity, but they weren't ready for me to join
- 54:01them. So I left after two years.
- 54:04I left and did that for six years.
- 54:07OK, hold on. First of all, you said your
- 54:09wife. Did you meet your wife at
- 54:10Shorter? I sure did.
- 54:12Dude, you definitely need to find that coach from Gardner
- 54:14Webb. You know what I'm saying?
- 54:16Like I do. Yeah, think about this.
- 54:19Your life radically changed because he said because he took
- 54:22that extra step and said, hey, man, I know the guy's shorter.
- 54:25Let's get you connected there. I mean that that wasn't just
- 54:28about scholarship, for crying out loud.
- 54:30That was about life there. I love that.
- 54:32Second of all, you did data science for six years.
- 54:36I'm I didn't hear, I don't know what major you would pick for
- 54:40that, but I don't think that that's something that I would
- 54:43have thought just from hearing a little bit of your story.
- 54:46What does that entail? How do those guys even find you
- 54:49and what does that entail? So.
- 54:51I think this kind of goes back to what we're talking about,
- 54:54like being more than than a football or track and field
- 54:58athlete. And and so all these different
- 55:01things were in Rome. And so like going to shorter
- 55:05and, you know, playing football and running and participating in
- 55:09track and field and doing things in the community.
- 55:12These were individuals that have heard about, Hey, Bradley Moon
- 55:16is of of great character. You know, if you want to start
- 55:19something and you're looking for a, a young man or woman, this is
- 55:23this is an individual that you should look to.
- 55:27And so all the all the jobs or occupations that I've got that
- 55:31I've received over this time have always been phone.
- 55:33Calls from me. And so that's how I found like,
- 55:37I didn't know this was a thing. They just hey, I remember you.
- 55:42I taught your. Wife.
- 55:43All these different things, I'm like, OK, sure.
- 55:45I don't have a conversation because I always had this desire
- 55:49to be in business, to be an entrepreneur, all the things.
- 55:52And so that's kind of led me down that path.
- 55:55Now typically a guy like that, I've met several of you crazy
- 55:59people you you've got 1000 ideas for businesses ever explore any
- 56:05of those or. We'll, we'll get to, yeah, yeah,
- 56:09we'll, we'll get to those here a little.
- 56:11Bit So what does a data? You know, I have this picture in
- 56:13my head of what a data scientist does.
- 56:15What does a data scientist actually do?
- 56:17So it was a data science company and in my role was like an
- 56:20analyst there and so. We.
- 56:23Had a technology where if you had an image and we had this
- 56:28little image handler and then it would render or produce like
- 56:346000 different algorithms that would actually expose more
- 56:38information. So that could be a mammogram or
- 56:43ACT scan, MRI. And so my job in that was to
- 56:47review those. And so I had to learn.
- 56:49I learned all this on the job. Like I didn't, you know, I
- 56:52didn't go to school for this. I didn't.
- 56:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 56:55And so it was a really neat technology and you know that.
- 56:58And so I analyzed a lot of images.
- 57:01So you're looking at scans like of the brain and MRI of the.
- 57:04Brain and. No offense, what the hell are
- 57:07you doing? Because I'm not.
- 57:09It gets me a little concerned about the medical field if
- 57:12you're diagnosed, if you are diagnosing, because I'm not, no.
- 57:15OK, OK. There was no diagnosing.
- 57:17It was more like, so their their system was as I learned about
- 57:23the algorithm. So like the internal team really
- 57:26taught me a really good job of like what the algorithm was
- 57:29exposing like new information. And So what I would do is I,
- 57:34hey, look, these are say out of the 6000 algorithms or results,
- 57:39these are the 35 that seem to be exposing more data because it's
- 57:42talking about how do you expose more data in the end.
- 57:46And so then what we would do, we would have a radiologist or
- 57:49someone say, hey, look, this is what we this is what we found,
- 57:53you know, is this useful to you? So no diagnosing at all.
- 57:57This is just I was. Yeah, yeah.
- 58:00OK. No.
- 58:00Very concerned. Apparently I, I, I didn't, you
- 58:03know, you didn't introduce yourself as Doctor Moon.
- 58:05So I'm like, where do I'm so concerned, OK.
- 58:08So and. Was this fun work for you?
- 58:11It was. It was.
- 58:12It was. It was.
- 58:14Fun work because of the rooms that I was able to be a part of,
- 58:18because I keep going back to like my core is wanting to be a
- 58:22business owner, an entrepreneur and being in these rooms where
- 58:26this is a startup and being in the rooms to see how the the
- 58:29sausage is being made. You like that aspect?
- 58:32That aspect of it, that's what I was like.
- 58:34So I would like I said, I took this job to learn to learn.
- 58:38Like how does business actually ran?
- 58:40Yeah, yeah. Like how do they market
- 58:42something? We have a new product and nobody
- 58:45knows about it. How That's what I was just kind
- 58:47of being on a flop. Not necessarily looking at the
- 58:49output of the algorithm. Yeah, OK, That's where I was.
- 58:51Just like Bradley is like, you know, I've done, whether it's
- 58:56the podcast or sales, Oregon coaching for a long, long time
- 58:59now. I'm an old man, so I have a
- 59:01pretty good bead on people after a few minutes to talk to them
- 59:03like this. You know, there's people who
- 59:06love that, who love give me 1000 pages of data and go find the
- 59:11worm. The one thing, right, people,
- 59:13just I mean, that's a that's a skill absolutely isn't.
- 59:15Thank God people have that skill.
- 59:17You I'm like, man, I just can't see looking at the this code and
- 59:20this algorithm and these scans and and finding the ones that
- 59:23are given the best, you know, data output to go give to
- 59:26someone else. That that's the part that partly
- 59:28that, but also the and then to go give it to someone else.
- 59:31That doesn't seem like Bradley seems like the kind of guy who's
- 59:33like, I want to get my hands in it.
- 59:36Yeah. So that's why I was like this.
- 59:38This is fun. You're talking about kind of the
- 59:40back end stuff of like. Behind the curtains.
- 59:43I see how they're doing, how they think about R&D.
- 59:46I'm thinking I see how they they find markets to go to, how they
- 59:50promote this versus how we promoted batting gloves.
- 59:54Yeah, OK. That.
- 59:56Makes. A lot of sense that that was
- 59:58that. It wasn't so much of the actual
- 1:00:00job. It was like, this is an
- 1:00:01opportunity for someone that's young, in their early 20s to
- 1:00:05learn. About how how to actually start
- 1:00:07a business. What does it look like?
- 1:00:10And so did that. For.
- 1:00:12Six years. Six years.
- 1:00:14Yeah, well, you must have been good and valuable because, you
- 1:00:16know, you don't keep people around.
- 1:00:18You don't keep people around for six years, man, you know.
- 1:00:20Yeah. And still coaching at the the
- 1:00:24school. Correct.
- 1:00:25And so during this time, this is where like the coach things
- 1:00:34started kind of dialing in and it really happened with I had
- 1:00:40two athletes, they are in college now, a Cooper, Cooper
- 1:00:44Giddens and Lizzie Pardue. Cooper's at Lee University and
- 1:00:48Lizzie Pardue is at Sanford. And I had these two individuals
- 1:00:53since they were in middle school and then did watch them progress
- 1:00:58as young, you know, men and women and on and that coaching.
- 1:01:04Bug. I started tweaking for me when
- 1:01:06they like coach, I really like track and field and they said I
- 1:01:11think I could be really. Good.
- 1:01:14And so me, I was like, oh, Mike, I got to get educated.
- 1:01:19I got a, you know, I've got to start, you know, cooking my.
- 1:01:24Own. System, if you will, and I those
- 1:01:28two athletes really started this journey of like how I got to
- 1:01:34where I'm at now was the really start of all of.
- 1:01:38This. How are you balancing coaching
- 1:01:41and a full time job? Like are you getting off at 3:00
- 1:01:44every day? How are you working that out?
- 1:01:46That's correct. So I I have it set up where like
- 1:01:48I have all the meetings I need before and then I get off say
- 1:01:523330 and go coach. And that's what I do now in the
- 1:01:55fall with the athletes that I see now this the schedule is
- 1:01:59still the same. And what I've appreciated with
- 1:02:01the people that I work with, they say you're an adult, you
- 1:02:05know, it needs to be done and don't have anyone waiting for
- 1:02:09you material. If you can do that.
- 1:02:13And then you can continue to do this coaching and work with us.
- 1:02:17And so it's really been a neat situation.
- 1:02:20And I'm, I'm grateful because it's, it's, it's, it's not very
- 1:02:23common, if you will. Yeah, I was gonna say, it's so
- 1:02:26free. And when you get complete trust,
- 1:02:27you got to earn it. I get that.
- 1:02:29And some people will say, you know, I want my employees to
- 1:02:34earn it, but then know that there's never a finish line to
- 1:02:36actually earn it. You know, it's like, no, they
- 1:02:38still haven't done this or they've only been here five
- 1:02:40years. Well, what is it?
- 1:02:41Is it 10 years? Is it 15?
- 1:02:43What, what is it? And then it's 10 years like,
- 1:02:45well, things have changed in the business and I still got a, you
- 1:02:47know, it's like, man, it's so freeing when you are allowed to
- 1:02:52be yourself, be told what the goal is and then go, go to the
- 1:02:57goal, go go get it. And, and you know what, if you
- 1:03:00don't, you know, there's consequences to that.
- 1:03:01We'll talk about that. But if you can do it legally and
- 1:03:04ethically to get to the goal, go get her done.
- 1:03:06Maybe you can figure out stuff and teach us how to do things.
- 1:03:09That's so freeing, dude. I love that for you.
- 1:03:12Yeah. So and so then there, yeah.
- 1:03:16So I left there and then I started working my and then
- 1:03:20that's and so that's how coaching really in there in that
- 1:03:23six year window of doing that full time and then tweaking the
- 1:03:27coaches when I start really falling in love with it.
- 1:03:30What? How old are you at the end of
- 1:03:31the six years of that company? 20 Eightish. 20 Eightish I.
- 1:03:36So I left there. In 20, 2023.
- 1:03:43So I was there. I, I started working there in
- 1:03:4727/20/18 ish. That's 5 five years, yeah.
- 1:03:53And then I left in in 2023. So.
- 1:03:57You are. So why'd you leave?
- 1:03:59And, and you know, if you're, if you really are still an
- 1:04:02entrepreneur, that's a dumb question because that's what
- 1:04:04Sierra entrepreneurs do. They leave so they can go
- 1:04:07somewhere. I mean, that's just what you do.
- 1:04:08So I was I. Started there.
- 1:04:10I started working with them at. I was 27 and then, yeah, then in
- 1:04:1632 is when I left and then I'll be 34 in November and six days.
- 1:04:22Oh man, happy early birthday brother.
- 1:04:23Thank you. And you're so young.
- 1:04:25What a pup. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:27So so I I. Left.
- 1:04:31Because I wanted to really start pursuing more coaching.
- 1:04:34A. Little bit more so the dial
- 1:04:37really has been turning here. And so I wanted to leave there
- 1:04:42to pursue more coaching and then.
- 1:04:46Why did you think you had to leave for that?
- 1:04:47Because you're you're working a full time gig, doing well,
- 1:04:50successful and coaching. So it's not like that's getting
- 1:04:55in the way of coaching you. You wanted to do more into
- 1:04:59coaching. What what?
- 1:05:01Like what? What was the job hindering you
- 1:05:03from? I I.
- 1:05:05Think it was more. Of.
- 1:05:08I wanted to be able to have coach more, more students and so
- 1:05:14I I thought that, you know, leaving would would be a good
- 1:05:20right for I could do that. And and, you know, it was a lot
- 1:05:24of unknown about, you know, maybe I.
- 1:05:25Shouldn't. Leave.
- 1:05:26Maybe I shouldn't, but then I was telling my wife that I think
- 1:05:29I should really turn up the Dow and coaching more and to leave
- 1:05:33this and, you know, then if I needed to get something else to
- 1:05:37kind of, you know, supplement, then I would.
- 1:05:40But I I at that time I thought I really wanted to pursue this
- 1:05:44coaching and coach more athletes and things that nature.
- 1:05:46So I start dialing that up a lot more.
- 1:05:48So what's that look like? Because you know what's funny to
- 1:05:51me as you're married and I've been married for 17, almost 18
- 1:05:55years now, the decisions that you used to make on your own
- 1:05:59just don't happen anymore. You're, you're, you have a
- 1:06:01partner, you have someone that you're beholden to.
- 1:06:03Correct. And women are typically my
- 1:06:05experience, a little bit more practical, not necessarily
- 1:06:10educated, but at least for my wife, smarter than me.
- 1:06:13So when you make it, when you're going through this process, you
- 1:06:17know, she's got a, she's got to give you a blessing, right?
- 1:06:20Or or you know, other things start to happen.
- 1:06:23And. Those things.
- 1:06:24So she had to be, you know, kind of a good sounding board for you
- 1:06:30to talk things out and help you see things that maybe you were
- 1:06:32missing and and help encourage you for things that maybe you
- 1:06:36needed some encouragement to. Yeah.
- 1:06:38So she. Was very supportive and still it
- 1:06:41is because I said, look, I really want to turn this
- 1:06:44coaching dial up. I mean I said, you know this the
- 1:06:47day job is great and you know without going to all the little
- 1:06:50details, you know, I was like, you know, maybe I want to leave
- 1:06:53it's not fun and there was a lot of business things that was
- 1:06:56going on that I just didn't want to be a part of anymore all
- 1:07:00these type of things. And so I started thinking about
- 1:07:03well what what can I do? Like what is Bradley?
- 1:07:05I said, well, I can coach. I know about track and field.
- 1:07:08And so I start turning that dial up and and then I just and I
- 1:07:14just started coaching more athletes and then Sprint free
- 1:07:17training started. And so, yeah.
- 1:07:21So so how did you coach more athletes like you?
- 1:07:23You go to a different school or and is Sprint free a club?
- 1:07:27Tell tell us more about that. So what I started?
- 1:07:29Doing is I in Rome, I really enjoyed the fact that like,
- 1:07:35first of all, the two athletes that I had, I took them to, you
- 1:07:39know, a lot of the summer meets and then doing stuff indoor and
- 1:07:43they really had a great experience.
- 1:07:45So they were training with me through the fall and all these
- 1:07:47different things, right? And I was like, you know, I'm
- 1:07:49sure there's a lot more athletes that would benefit from getting
- 1:07:54this experience that enjoy track and field sprinting and all
- 1:07:58that. And I said I want to be able to
- 1:08:00pour into that. And if we're going to do it
- 1:08:02appropriately, that requires fall training when you know, all
- 1:08:06the things that we're familiar with, Mike.
- 1:08:09And so that'll I had, I want to have more kids.
- 1:08:11And so I wanted to spend more time doing that.
- 1:08:15And so, and that's kind of how I started the little Sprint, the
- 1:08:20Sprint free stuff and, and, and started that because it was a
- 1:08:25way for me to get more athletes and give them an experience.
- 1:08:28These these athletes that really enjoy track and field.
- 1:08:33Hey, look, this is going to help you for spring if you're
- 1:08:36training in the fall, because we know that, you know, it doesn't
- 1:08:40start in March when you start training, it starts a lot more
- 1:08:43before then. And so I had a real good group
- 1:08:47of of athletes rough about 15, about 15 or 17 that.
- 1:08:53How do you find that? That's what I was wondering.
- 1:08:55You know, so because you talk about turn of the dial, you want
- 1:08:57to go from 3:00 to 5:00 because I work 8:00 to 3:00 or whatnot.
- 1:09:01But three to five, March, April, May to OK, this is maybe a noon
- 1:09:05to 5:00 because of different groups and, and things like
- 1:09:07that, call it 365 days a year at this point.
- 1:09:10So you hang a shingle out and that's that's fine, that's one
- 1:09:12thing. But how do you find these
- 1:09:14athletes? So it's interesting is really
- 1:09:17organically so the the couple kids that I had.
- 1:09:21They did well. They tell a friend and you know
- 1:09:25that's how. I.
- 1:09:26Grew the the Sprint free coaching business, if you will.
- 1:09:32And it's just really word of mouth and then you post stuff
- 1:09:35about it, you know, you come on. Instagram.
- 1:09:38Social media, but like the local group has really been word of
- 1:09:42mouth. Yeah, it's how how it's
- 1:09:44happened. And how'd you come up with the
- 1:09:45name Sprint Free Training? So.
- 1:09:48Interesting enough there is a another running club by the name
- 1:09:51of Run Free Training and they are owned Jay Stevenson and I
- 1:09:57can't think of the Chad Hall they started this where it was
- 1:10:01essentially like online coaching for distance runners.
- 1:10:06JJ Stevenson was actually a cross country coach at Shore.
- 1:10:11So that's how we. Met.
- 1:10:13And I, him and I got together and we were like, hey, like we
- 1:10:17could do this. For.
- 1:10:18Sprinters. Right.
- 1:10:22And so we met and I was like, yeah, that's, that was great,
- 1:10:25especially at the time when I was, we wanted to dial up this
- 1:10:27thing. I said that'd be great and all
- 1:10:29that. And so we kind of with run free,
- 1:10:32we said Sprint free just to keep it simple.
- 1:10:35And that's how it really started.
- 1:10:38I started just kind of taking the reins on that and then
- 1:10:42actually legitimize, I would say like having it as a, as a actual
- 1:10:47business, not just, hey, look, I'm, this is what I'm doing, but
- 1:10:50you know, all the little things that actually make it a
- 1:10:52business. So.
- 1:10:53So who's running jump free training and throw free training
- 1:10:56and vault free training? You know who?
- 1:10:58And you know, that was that was the idea.
- 1:11:02It's so funny. I do have those what those
- 1:11:05domains I actually did buy. But yeah, it was just, it was
- 1:11:09just something. That, you know, he had to run
- 1:11:12free and we decided, hey, Sprint free sounds fine and kind of ran
- 1:11:15with. So that's how it really started,
- 1:11:18the name and all that. Yeah, I like that.
- 1:11:19I like that. So, you know, we talked about
- 1:11:22when you typically when you first get into coaching, you
- 1:11:25fall back to how you were coached and and sometimes that's
- 1:11:28perfectly fine. I mean, you know, I I try, I try
- 1:11:30to think of someone who, you know, was coached by Vince
- 1:11:32Anderson and be like, man, you're pretty sad.
- 1:11:34If you paid attention, you, you kind of know the play, you know,
- 1:11:38most of us, you know, most of us are probably coached fairly
- 1:11:42well, not optimally, but fairly well and, and typically fairly
- 1:11:46safe. But then we start adding our own
- 1:11:49thing because we learn it from somewhere, whether it's coaching
- 1:11:52education, sometimes experience, etcetera.
- 1:11:55What are you and, and, and maybe where does it start or maybe not
- 1:11:59at all? Where does coaching education
- 1:12:01fit into this? And you know, for coaching
- 1:12:03education, I'll always explain it kind of two ways.
- 1:12:05There's formal and informal. You talked about some informal
- 1:12:08training, informal coaching education and that's calling
- 1:12:11coach Byrd, coach Black like and and neither one's more
- 1:12:15important. By the way, the informal and
- 1:12:16formal coaching education extremely valuable that
- 1:12:19peer-to-peer that informal extremely valuable.
- 1:12:22Absolutely. Formal is more like our USATF
- 1:12:24level 1 level twos, USTFCA coaching Academy.
- 1:12:27Altis does a great job. Are you doing anything coaching
- 1:12:32education wise during this point?
- 1:12:33I am so when I told I talked about the two athletes that
- 1:12:38really kind of started the that really led me down this path of
- 1:12:41coaching and. I said.
- 1:12:44Oh, these these athletes really enjoy it.
- 1:12:47And the Lord has given me them an opportunity to shepherd them.
- 1:12:51And I want to make sure as a coach that I give them the best
- 1:12:54opportunity that they possibly can.
- 1:12:56And so I said I need to get educated.
- 1:12:59So I went through the, you know, the USATFCCA Coaches Association
- 1:13:05and started learning about sprints, hurdles and relays.
- 1:13:09And Vince was the. Vince was one of the.
- 1:13:14Teachers it was. Him, Vince Anderson and I think
- 1:13:18it is it Tommy. Bowden the Tommy.
- 1:13:21Badon. Yeah, he was.
- 1:13:23They were the two leading the very first coaching education
- 1:13:28that I went. Through head coach of Louisiana.
- 1:13:32That's correct. And and it was like mind
- 1:13:35blowing. Yeah.
- 1:13:37And you? Know now what do you mean mind
- 1:13:39blowing? This is interesting because
- 1:13:40coaching education changed my life.
- 1:13:42Like not only coaching, but yeah, the rest of my life with
- 1:13:45my mentor Boo Scheck Slater. What when you say it was mind
- 1:13:49blowing because you have a pretty good.
- 1:13:50I know Scott well and I know coach Blackwell, you know,
- 1:13:52they're they're very good. Like I would tell you, whatever
- 1:13:55they're doing, they were doing it right, you know?
- 1:13:56Things like that. What was it?
- 1:14:00What was mind blowing? Was it like I remember when I
- 1:14:03did jumps level 2 with Boo, I remember what was mind blowing.
- 1:14:08That's probably how I would have described.
- 1:14:09It was not so much that I learned some new things.
- 1:14:12I certainly did, no questions asked, but I learned that I was
- 1:14:16doing a lot of things correctly, just not in the right order.
- 1:14:20And I literally went home. I continued doing a lot of the
- 1:14:22same things I would do with some tweaks that I learned, but
- 1:14:25changed order, you know of it. And I mean huge like the the
- 1:14:30kids I coached my first five years were drastically
- 1:14:33different. The second five years that I
- 1:14:34coach, I mean like way better. So I would say that was mind
- 1:14:37blowing. Like, oh, the concept that I was
- 1:14:38actually doing some things right, wrong order was mimic to
- 1:14:41me. What what about you?
- 1:14:42Because you have a pretty good foundation at this point.
- 1:14:43It was, it was very similar. It was just the sequencing and
- 1:14:48when they were talking about it and about just like how you
- 1:14:52place certain things and I'm like.
- 1:14:54Oh, that makes sense. And, you know, as as sprinters
- 1:15:00and speed and all these different things, I said, OK,
- 1:15:04I'm going to do that. And it really like changed the
- 1:15:09way how I approached my coaching and the systems.
- 1:15:13And it was just a matter of placement.
- 1:15:16And so when I went through there, I was like, Oh my
- 1:15:18goodness, I've learned so much. And I couldn't wait.
- 1:15:20I couldn't wait to try these different.
- 1:15:23Things and. And so that was the first, first
- 1:15:26coach going through like formal coaching that I went through.
- 1:15:31And then every year I, I do one just to kind of stay up to date
- 1:15:36on all the different things. And then then I went to to
- 1:15:40Altus. Because how'd you find out about
- 1:15:42Altus? So I I.
- 1:15:46Really enjoy learning a lot. And so I was like, I went
- 1:15:49through the, the coaches association and then I, I think
- 1:15:55I may have been on the Internet or something and Stu and Dan
- 1:15:59Path had popped up somewhere and I said, oh.
- 1:16:02This is really neat. I said Altus, you know, they
- 1:16:05work with professional athletes, electric athletes, blah, blah,
- 1:16:08blah, blah. We we know their track record
- 1:16:11and I called Coach Black. And I said hey.
- 1:16:15Do you know about? Altus.
- 1:16:16He's. Like, Oh yeah.
- 1:16:17I know. I said hey, I'm.
- 1:16:22I'm really thinking about, you know, going through that.
- 1:16:25I went through the Coast Association and I found this and
- 1:16:28I think this will be a really good next level.
- 1:16:32And what do you think about it? He said you should go because
- 1:16:36it's he was, he was saying that you will learn a lot just from a
- 1:16:41different perspective. And he said I should go.
- 1:16:45And I was like, OK, cool. And so I did the the coach's
- 1:16:48apprentice program where you did it for two days.
- 1:16:51What was that in in Phoenix or Atlanta?
- 1:16:54It was in Atlanta. Yeah, I was like, because they
- 1:16:56moved to Atlanta for a little while, so Andre Andreas Bain.
- 1:16:59So you probably met Andreas Guild podcast alum, by the way,
- 1:17:02love him and Stu, who's fantastic.
- 1:17:07And they had just, in fact, they're just moving back to
- 1:17:10Phoenix. Like, are they OK?
- 1:17:12Yeah, yeah, they're kind of there.
- 1:17:13They just bought. I don't know if I'm allowed to
- 1:17:15say so I won't say don't say it, but yeah, I just had a
- 1:17:17conversation with him and he told me some, some exciting
- 1:17:20things are happening. I love that for them because a,
- 1:17:23their passion for coaching and coaching education is
- 1:17:26outstanding. So I love what they're doing and
- 1:17:28they're the way they do it and and why they do it.
- 1:17:31So, but you get hang out with Andre, dude, he's so cool.
- 1:17:35He's so cool. I learned a lot from him as
- 1:17:38well. And so I was there.
- 1:17:40And kind of a side note, and I'll go back to Altus because I
- 1:17:43think it's important to land there is So Dan Path actually
- 1:17:49coached my mother-in-law when he was at LSU.
- 1:17:52Really. And so, yes, so wow.
- 1:17:57So my mother-in-law, Krista Schumann Algana, she is from
- 1:18:01Guatemala. OK.
- 1:18:03And she came to the states to, to Goretta, LSU and Dan Path and
- 1:18:12Lauren Seagrave where they come. And I remember just kind of
- 1:18:17telling them, hey, I sent a picture that hey, I'm, you know,
- 1:18:20with Dan Path and all these people learning about, you know,
- 1:18:23sprinting. And she said, oh, my goodness,
- 1:18:25Dan. Yeah, he coached me.
- 1:18:27All these years. You didn't know.
- 1:18:29I didn't know and so. We're at.
- 1:18:32You need to talk to your mother-in-law more that.
- 1:18:34You yeah, I didn't know I didn't I didn't really know all of that
- 1:18:37and so any anyway, long story. Krista had a great career.
- 1:18:41She was a, you know, she went to the Olympics and that she she's
- 1:18:46she's amazing. And and so I went up to Dan I.
- 1:18:50Said hey, did you? I said I.
- 1:18:52Think you coached my mother-in-law, Krista Schuman?
- 1:18:56He's like. Yeah, she was.
- 1:18:58From Guatemala, right? All these years.
- 1:19:02Mike. So we showed pictures and then
- 1:19:10Christmas showed me all the, the, the, the little yearbooks
- 1:19:14from when, you know, Lauren Seagrave and Dan Path were
- 1:19:16together and all, all these different things.
- 1:19:19And so anyway, that's a side note.
- 1:19:21So me, me and Dan had a really good connection there.
- 1:19:24But I enjoy those four days at Altus.
- 1:19:28I learned a lot. And then that's when Matthew
- 1:19:31Davis and I connected. Dude, So first of all, Dan Path,
- 1:19:34also Gill podcast alum, highly suggest you go back with him and
- 1:19:38Matthew. Now wait a minute, Matthew
- 1:19:39Davis, you got to forgive me. You know, 300 plus episodes.
- 1:19:43I the memory is not as good as it may.
- 1:19:46I'm I'm not a steel trap like bananas.
- 1:19:49But Matthew was, he's from the Pennsylvania 'cause I ran into
- 1:19:53him at Penn Relays one year. He's from Pennsylvania, correct?
- 1:19:55So he's down in Atlanta for the ACP is correct.
- 1:20:00OK. And so, yeah, tell me more.
- 1:20:03So you guys got connected together, huh?
- 1:20:05Yeah, so we. He's kind of a nerd, and I say
- 1:20:07that in a good way, like he's. Yes, OK, you can you.
- 1:20:09Can say that he knows it. We we, you know, remember when
- 1:20:12we were young and you know, you are young, you know, nerd was a
- 1:20:15bad thing, right? You get called a nerd, you know,
- 1:20:17that was, you know, now it's like, man, I, I love when people
- 1:20:19are nerds. I love when people call me a
- 1:20:20nerd about podcasting or track or whatever.
- 1:20:22Like that's yeah, opposite. He's a nerd.
- 1:20:25He's definitely a nerd. I'll say it.
- 1:20:26After he's doing and stuff, he's AI like it.
- 1:20:29I like his stuff on Twitter. He's a good father as well.
- 1:20:32So we met and we connected a little bit there and then maybe,
- 1:20:39maybe. 6:00 to 8:00. Months later, that's when he he
- 1:20:43shared that he was working on this, this track in motion.
- 1:20:47And when I saw it I was like man this is really neat and so IDMD
- 1:20:57him in ex. I was like, hey, bro, do you, do
- 1:21:00you Remember Me back from, you know, the office and all that?
- 1:21:03He said. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:05And I said, dude, I, I like what you've done.
- 1:21:07I've tested it out. I said, I think we could create
- 1:21:10a company around this. And so he was like, really?
- 1:21:15I'm like. Yes.
- 1:21:17I love the serial entrepreneur and the the the app nerd.
- 1:21:21Yeah, like, wait a minute. Really.
- 1:21:22We have peanut butter and Jelly? Wait, we.
- 1:21:24Correct. And so I was like, dude, I, I
- 1:21:27said I, I. Think you?
- 1:21:28I think you have. Something here and I think with
- 1:21:31we us working together we could really do something so.
- 1:21:35I flew up. To PA and met with him.
- 1:21:38I said, Hey, look, I'm a car, I'm a clean my schedule out and
- 1:21:41I said, let's just I just want to talk to you get to know me,
- 1:21:43but I know you only spend a few days with me and let's get
- 1:21:46together. So we spent a weekend together
- 1:21:48and and anyway, Long story short, we got together and I
- 1:21:52said, do that. I like this.
- 1:21:53And so I said, I really think there's a some what you built,
- 1:21:58we can develop it more and actually have a Sprint coach in
- 1:22:03your pocket and so. I love that term, by the way.
- 1:22:09And so we got together and we took what he had and now we've
- 1:22:13created remotion, which is a Sprint coach in your pocket that
- 1:22:17we have, we're working on and we've got a beta going on.
- 1:22:20And so that's how we got connected.
- 1:22:23So it wasn't an initial like at ACP like, oh, this is my God.
- 1:22:28You know, sometimes you just connect with it's like, man, I
- 1:22:31don't even know how, but we just we're the same people.
- 1:22:33Do we just hang out, right. It was little bit later and you
- 1:22:36saw him from see, we love to talk about the negative of
- 1:22:41social media and there's certainly negatives, yes, but
- 1:22:44but there's negatives in everything like they they is
- 1:22:47gone through the dawn of time. Every new thing that has been
- 1:22:52created has been touted as the end of society, right.
- 1:22:58Like when you know, new when type, when the Gutenberg press
- 1:23:02came out, you know, more people could read that was going to be
- 1:23:04in society because now information can flow freely and
- 1:23:06not just to be highly educated. The rich people is who it was
- 1:23:10back then that could read, right?
- 1:23:11That was going to be the downfall of society.
- 1:23:13And then radio came along. That was going to be the
- 1:23:15downfall society. Young kids are just going to
- 1:23:17listen to the radio and not want to work, right.
- 1:23:20And then TV came out. Oh, we're all going to become
- 1:23:22zombies. It's the end of the world,
- 1:23:24Terrible. And look at the stuff that they
- 1:23:25put on there, violence and sex and all this kind of stuff,
- 1:23:28right. And then the Internet of court,
- 1:23:30you know, you're, you're now we're in your age where you
- 1:23:32understand, like, Oh, I remember that people tell me the Internet
- 1:23:34is terrible and it's going to, you know, all of us young people
- 1:23:36are going to do terrible things because of the Internet.
- 1:23:38And then smartphones came out, but we're back to being zombies.
- 1:23:43And then social media came out and you know, everything has
- 1:23:46been touted as, you know, now VR and Bitcoin and stuff like that
- 1:23:50is all going to be, you know, the, the, the GP TS AI is going
- 1:23:55to be the end of the world, all those kind of stuff.
- 1:23:59Here is a great example of the positivity specifically of
- 1:24:02social media here, that if if social media is not around, I
- 1:24:05don't know that you 2 connect. We don't.
- 1:24:08Or at least it's much, much harder.
- 1:24:10It's much, much. Harder because like I already
- 1:24:12had, you know, like these ideas are like, you know, how do you
- 1:24:15how? As a.
- 1:24:16Coach, how can I provide value to someone that like is not in
- 1:24:20front of me? You know coaches have a lot of
- 1:24:23different responsibilities. Sometimes coaches can be there,
- 1:24:26but on the flip side, what about the athlete who doesn't have
- 1:24:29access to trading a lot, a lot, right.
- 1:24:34And so when I saw what he was already doing, I, I already been
- 1:24:38like thinking about like how to, and then I saw it.
- 1:24:40I was like, Oh my goodness, like, like, I don't know if he
- 1:24:45knew he was on to something, but he's, he's definitely on the
- 1:24:49path. And so we, I mean, we met
- 1:24:53together and now we're at a place where the Sprint coach in
- 1:24:57your pocket. We're, we're guided and we've
- 1:24:59done some teasers. He's posted some stuff on it,
- 1:25:01but we're, we're hoping that in, in January, we'll be in the App
- 1:25:06Store and, and it's, it's something that we spend a lot of
- 1:25:10time working on and with the science and all that.
- 1:25:13He's really good at that. I want to give him a lot of
- 1:25:16props because he understands like how it needs to look from
- 1:25:20the science perspective in the angles, in the math.
- 1:25:23And we're we're really excited about having that for athletes,
- 1:25:28coaches and parents that just don't have access I.
- 1:25:31Think that's so valuable because, you know, it's, it's
- 1:25:34easy for us to say, you know, and today in 20252026, man,
- 1:25:37there's no excuse that you don't know how to coach, right?
- 1:25:40YouTube, Altus, USTFCAUSATF, etcetera.
- 1:25:44Clinics, like I said, I just MC2 clinics that had amazing, you
- 1:25:48know, Vince Anderson and Britain and man, I mean, just amazing,
- 1:25:50amazing people speaking, right? So there's no excuse.
- 1:25:53However, we forget that most of our high school coaches are high
- 1:25:57school teachers. They're teaching, I'm going to
- 1:26:00liberally say 8 to 3. You know, they don't, you don't
- 1:26:02start at 8, you start at six and six.
- 1:26:04Yeah, if you have families and there's grading and all this
- 1:26:07kind of stuff, right. I love one of my favorite things
- 1:26:10to do. It sounds a little belittling,
- 1:26:12but it's, it's actually not. There's actually a lot of props
- 1:26:14for people who do this. Do you know what Reddit is?
- 1:26:16Do you know Reddit? Yeah, I do, yeah.
- 1:26:18Do you ever go? On Reddit, I haven't.
- 1:26:20No. Not recently, no.
- 1:26:22So, but you know, Reddit, you know, it's so Reddit's Reddit
- 1:26:24and then it has all these sub basically it's message boards
- 1:26:26back in the day. You know, everything old is new
- 1:26:28again. It's just a message board,
- 1:26:29right? And they have all the message
- 1:26:31boards of everything in the world.
- 1:26:31There's message awards about cats, there's message awards
- 1:26:33about podcasts, there's message awards about Nike, you know,
- 1:26:37everything, right? And so there's track and field,
- 1:26:40there's track and field, there's sprinting, there's hurdles.
- 1:26:42And people go on there and discuss many, many different
- 1:26:44things. It's the Internet.
- 1:26:45So many, many different things, right?
- 1:26:46But not uncommon. A coach, both high school and
- 1:26:51college, by the way, and middle school and club, they'll get on
- 1:26:55there and they'll ask a question to the body, you know, to people
- 1:26:57who are in that, in that subreddit, something a coaching
- 1:27:00esque, right? You know, how do I get a kid to
- 1:27:02three-step or how do I help transition a kid from a 12 LB to
- 1:27:0516 LB shop, but things like that.
- 1:27:07But there'll be a lot of questions that, you know, as a
- 1:27:10guy who you know, coached at a pretty high level for 10 years
- 1:27:13and now is, you know, involved with guys like you and you know,
- 1:27:16high level every event, sprints, jumps, hurdles, etcetera.
- 1:27:20You know, it's a little like, why would you ask that like
- 1:27:22that? It's common sense, right?
- 1:27:24Like the left foot goes in front of the right foot type of thing,
- 1:27:27right? But what it shows, first of all,
- 1:27:30I don't belittle those people because I'm like, well, at least
- 1:27:33they have the humility to ask, ask.
- 1:27:34There's plenty of people who don't know this stuff and don't
- 1:27:37ask. Those are the ones you got to
- 1:27:38have a little, you know, judgement to, but the ones at
- 1:27:41least they're asking are trying to get better.
- 1:27:44But my point is there, there are people who don't know these
- 1:27:48things. Who don't know these things?
- 1:27:49And a lot of times we get into this again, this, this 1% like,
- 1:27:53oh, how do I take this? You know, 1060 kid down to 1040.
- 1:27:56It's like, man, this guy's he's trying to coach 10 second 60M
- 1:28:00guys. He, he don't even know how to do
- 1:28:02block. He's even using blocks.
- 1:28:03He don't even know what the heck to do right.
- 1:28:05The basics are so important and I think having apps like this
- 1:28:08helps that it's a part of the puzzle.
- 1:28:10It's not the answer. There's a lot of different
- 1:28:13moving parts here, but it's an answer, a part of the solution
- 1:28:17to help that guy. And you know, from Alabama,
- 1:28:19rural Alabama who just has no idea.
- 1:28:22My high school coach had no idea, but it was pre Internet
- 1:28:25basically correct. No clue.
- 1:28:26But that person would have benefited.
- 1:28:28Like, all right, I got some sprinters.
- 1:28:29What's this app telling me to do?
- 1:28:30Oh, and I can just I can just film them and it'll it'll put
- 1:28:33things in motion for me and show me.
- 1:28:35That's so valuable and important.
- 1:28:38And that's, and that's what we were because we always something
- 1:28:41that when Matthew and I meet, we always like, we want to be able
- 1:28:45to provide value, you know, to someone who doesn't have access.
- 1:28:49And how do you, how can you do that with, you know, an app or
- 1:28:53at least get them somewhere, have an ID?
- 1:28:55OK, I'm, this is where I'm at. This is where.
- 1:28:58I I should? Be the recommendations and
- 1:29:01things of that nature. So anyway we're we're excited
- 1:29:03about that. So that's how him and I got
- 1:29:06together and. I love that.
- 1:29:07Well, he's a good dude and knowing that he's hooked up with
- 1:29:10another good dude is is really important.
- 1:29:12You said hopefully by January of 26th we'll be in the App Store.
- 1:29:15End of January is our timetable. End of January, end of.
- 1:29:19January is our timetable. So we've got the beta and we've
- 1:29:22got some beta testers testing it now.
- 1:29:25So we are we're we're gearing up for AI would say a, a launch.
- 1:29:29And so there's a lot of other. Movies, yeah, right, 100% yeah.
- 1:29:32OK, so when you're listening to this at the earliest you're
- 1:29:36listening to this is the end of December.
- 1:29:38But the thing I love about podcast it's it's Evergreen
- 1:29:41content. Meaning like our first episode,
- 1:29:43which was, you know, 6 plus years ago now still gets people
- 1:29:46listening to it, right? So you, it may be 20-30 right
- 1:29:48now and you're listening to it, but if you're listening to this
- 1:29:50in December or January or even February of 2026, if you're in
- 1:29:57February, go look to see if it's on the App Store, you know,
- 1:29:59check your phone. If you're in December or
- 1:30:01January, put on your calendar. You know, always give grace,
- 1:30:04right? So I'm going to say the middle
- 1:30:05of February, in February, put in your calendar to go check it out
- 1:30:08because I, I, you owe it to yourself to at least look at a
- 1:30:12tool to see if it fits into your program.
- 1:30:14It's not going to fit in everybody's program.
- 1:30:15What they're doing is not going to be for 100% people, and they
- 1:30:18know that, but it's gonna be for some people and you won't know
- 1:30:20if it's for you if you don't. Go experiment, have some
- 1:30:23curiosity and go check out the the app.
- 1:30:25What? What are you gonna name it?
- 1:30:26Remotion. Remotion.
- 1:30:28See. That's good that you remember
- 1:30:29it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:30:30yeah, yeah. I knew that was a test.
- 1:30:31Yeah, yeah. Because if you don't have a
- 1:30:33memorable name, it's you're in trouble.
- 1:30:36It's spelled just like it sounds.
- 1:30:37So RE and then motion. Correct.
- 1:30:39Yeah. I love that.
- 1:30:40That's very cool. All right, go check that out.
- 1:30:42I love that for you guys and I love that for the for the
- 1:30:45coaching body. OK.
- 1:30:46So today in 2025, are you coaching any high school or is
- 1:30:52this all in the club model at this point?
- 1:30:56So in the spring it will be high school, you know, as I still do
- 1:30:59it, Unity Christian School and then.
- 1:31:01Oh, you are. You're still there.
- 1:31:03I. Still do it, yeah.
- 1:31:04That's cool. I still do it in the.
- 1:31:06Spring for a few months for them just just because I, I love that
- 1:31:11school and they, they, they, they've served and given me so
- 1:31:15much. So in the spring is for high
- 1:31:17school and then outside of after the spring season, summer and
- 1:31:20fall, that's all. Club stuff.
- 1:31:22Cool. All right.
- 1:31:23So, you know, in my role where I sit as a track coach advocate,
- 1:31:29kind of like I talked about with that conversation about
- 1:31:32responding to emails, you know, that we started on Twitter last
- 1:31:35night. You know, my role is to help
- 1:31:38people get out of your box. I'm not a coach anymore.
- 1:31:40I, you know, it's 20 year, 20 years over half your 1/2 of your
- 1:31:45life. I have not coached, but I did
- 1:31:49coach. You know, I coached a couple
- 1:31:50years high school, most of it was in college.
- 1:31:53I coached in the SECI, coached some guys who went on to the
- 1:31:55Olympics, SEC champions, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:31:58So I coached at high level, but I was in a box just like you're
- 1:32:01in the box. I'm in a sales box for sure.
- 1:32:05Like I have to work hard to get outside of sales to make sure
- 1:32:07we're doing things right. But I'm not in the coaching box.
- 1:32:09But I, I talk and see and interact with you 24 hours a
- 1:32:13day. This is what I do, right?
- 1:32:15So I feel, I take it on the responsibility to start
- 1:32:18conversations that people aren't necessarily having publicly.
- 1:32:23They, they, they, they hold it in their heart or their mind and
- 1:32:26just have anger about it. And that's not good, right?
- 1:32:30I want to help continue to move the profession forward, right?
- 1:32:33And there's many aspects to our profession.
- 1:32:35There's high school coaches, there's college coaches, there's
- 1:32:38pro coaches, there's summer coaches, middle school club,
- 1:32:42etcetera. And across America.
- 1:32:45I haven't heard this too much in Georgia, but I just doubt that
- 1:32:47it's not happening in Georgia. In other states, you know, where
- 1:32:50I'm going, the tension between our club coaches and our high
- 1:32:56school coaches, there's many egos involved, and egos aren't
- 1:33:02necessarily bad Ego helps us to want to dress better, to get
- 1:33:07better education, to to be better and do better.
- 1:33:09Bad ego is bad when it becomes more about me, when it becomes,
- 1:33:15you know, stepping on other people so that I can get better,
- 1:33:18that that's bad ego. And that's what we're trying to
- 1:33:20abolish here. What has been your experience,
- 1:33:24the start on the high school side?
- 1:33:26What has been your experience with other high school 'cause
- 1:33:29you're coaching other high school's kids up to a point?
- 1:33:33Hopefully we'll see. What has been your experience as
- 1:33:36a club coach as it relates to relationships with other high
- 1:33:40school coaches? I love this question and in my
- 1:33:44experience, it's really been, it's been a good one because I,
- 1:33:51I think there has to be a level of humility that comes with
- 1:33:54this. And so as a high school coach
- 1:33:58and a club coach. I.
- 1:34:03Have humility going into like all right, this athlete is going
- 1:34:07to be with you know me for the summer and all these different
- 1:34:10things their high school coach that they have made may have a
- 1:34:15different philosophy and and sometimes and we've had it the
- 1:34:19athlete comes back and say, well, coaching coach does this,
- 1:34:23but I know that's not right you know according to.
- 1:34:27You. So what should I?
- 1:34:29Do right? How I respond to that is.
- 1:34:35Look. He or she is your coach, all
- 1:34:38right, and try to give them wisdom on how to handle that
- 1:34:43because I don't I don't want any athlete that come sees me saying
- 1:34:47I'm bad mouthing another coach right.
- 1:34:50At the end of the day, we're we're, we're coaching these
- 1:34:53athletes and we want to help them improve at least.
- 1:34:55At least that should be the goal.
- 1:34:57Right. Not to not to tower my.
- 1:35:00Bro, do you know how many times I hear a coach say, and I, every
- 1:35:03coach would agree with this? Hey, do you do it for the kids?
- 1:35:05Oh yeah, I do it for the kids, right.
- 1:35:06We're, we're, we're so humble with the even with money, we go,
- 1:35:11oh, I don't do it for the money. I do it for the kids.
- 1:35:13And I, and I love that attitude. But first of all, and that
- 1:35:16tangent, you should be doing it for the money.
- 1:35:17You have a mortgage payment and you know, passions and
- 1:35:20charities, etcetera, you should be getting paid more.
- 1:35:22Don't do that. But we'll say we're doing it for
- 1:35:24the kids and then we'll do an action that is absolutely not
- 1:35:28for the kids. I'm like, wait a minute, I
- 1:35:30thought we were doing this for the kids here.
- 1:35:32Exactly. And so and so my approach to
- 1:35:35that is I say, look, listen, you're, you're doing well, keep
- 1:35:39trusting the process and all these different things and so.
- 1:35:43I've. I felt like I built a really
- 1:35:45good relationship with the local coaches here in town that I
- 1:35:48have. And funny enough, like one of
- 1:35:52the the coaches, he knows that I trained them and he has even
- 1:35:56moved like so we'll go to the Clemson, the high school Clemson
- 1:36:00meet at the January 12th and. He said look.
- 1:36:05I know you have majority of front of my track and field kids
- 1:36:08that are coming to see you, but we're going to start practice
- 1:36:11when they come back. Right.
- 1:36:14And I truly believe the only reason he would say is because
- 1:36:17how I've in our relationship and how I've treated him.
- 1:36:21I'm not bad mouthing him. I'm not just saying, oh, I'm
- 1:36:25doing it for the kids, but I'm, you know, chucking at him.
- 1:36:27That's that's not and so. I think it.
- 1:36:31OK, let me let me kick. I just think of I think of three
- 1:36:33scenarios, then I feel like, you know, we have enough rapport and
- 1:36:38trust that you're going to be able to give me some honest
- 1:36:40answers there because that's great.
- 1:36:41I think what you're saying is is perfect spot on very PC.
- 1:36:46That's great. It's great.
- 1:36:47Now let's talk about real worlds.
- 1:36:49Let's think about a couple examples here.
- 1:36:50And how would how would you either how would you react to it
- 1:36:54or maybe how have you reacted? Because these are these are very
- 1:36:56plausible. You know how I know they're
- 1:36:57possible. These are conversations I'm
- 1:36:59having every day. OK, athlete comes to you and
- 1:37:02says, Hey coach, my high school coach, we're talking about 100
- 1:37:07meter sprinter here. My high school coach is having
- 1:37:10us run 400 repeats every day. And you know, coach, I've been
- 1:37:15with you for a while. I know that doesn't seem right.
- 1:37:17You certainly don't. Well, I hope you don't Anyway, I
- 1:37:22want to just not train with my high school coach and just train
- 1:37:25with you. But I still want to compete for
- 1:37:27my high school because that's my boys, that's my girls, etcetera.
- 1:37:29What? What coach?
- 1:37:30What do I do? That's your coach.
- 1:37:35Like I I mean, if especially in the spring season, like I mean,
- 1:37:39I'm I'm already coaching high school kids and they come I say,
- 1:37:42hey, look, I mean, I mean, that's in the house in the
- 1:37:48spring season. I mean, there's not much that I
- 1:37:50can really do for you. You know, that's just the honest
- 1:37:53truth. You know I get you are.
- 1:37:56You calling high school coach? Am I calling high school?
- 1:37:59Coach. Yeah.
- 1:37:59Hey, coach, just want to talk to you.
- 1:38:01Cindy tells me you're doing front of me, repeats.
- 1:38:03And I want to tell you you're wrong, OK?
- 1:38:06No, I don't, because it's not my place.
- 1:38:09As. I think that's, at least for me,
- 1:38:13it's like he or she is the coach and they have this athlete for a
- 1:38:18period of time. And so how do I, how do I teach
- 1:38:22athletes to understand that there is a, I want to say it,
- 1:38:27not a chain of command, but that just seems the best word that I
- 1:38:30can gather is that I'm not calling coach and say, hey,
- 1:38:34look, oh Sydney, man, she doesn't need those 400.
- 1:38:38She needs this because this is this is pre comp period.
- 1:38:41This is period. You know this is probably she
- 1:38:44should do 8 days before so you can peak her.
- 1:38:47That's that conversation. I'm not calling because.
- 1:38:50He. He.
- 1:38:51He or she is the coach and I have to respect that.
- 1:38:54I think there's a lot of humility that must have to
- 1:38:56happen and frankly, in the track and field space, as you know,
- 1:39:01it's sometimes just doesn't they people got opinions and things
- 1:39:04of that nature. That's right.
- 1:39:05Remember, they coach typically how they were coached.
- 1:39:08That's probably how they were coached.
- 1:39:09Yeah. OK.
- 1:39:10And that's not unsafe, right? You know, it's not, it's not
- 1:39:13optimal for training, but, you know, do in front of me repeats.
- 1:39:16You're going to live. You're going to feel.
- 1:39:18Like. You're going to live.
- 1:39:19You'll live OK. These kids are, they're, they're
- 1:39:22not, I don't want to say fragile, but they, they're,
- 1:39:25they're, they can be resilient. They're resilient, absolutely.
- 1:39:27So, OK, so Sydney, I like this must be an athlete or a former
- 1:39:31athlete because you used Sydney as the name.
- 1:39:32Sydney comes to you and says, hey, you know, coach, our new
- 1:39:37track coach is having us do. I'm trying to think of something
- 1:39:40unsafe. Depth jumps every day at 42
- 1:39:43inches after we lifted by the way, and after we did quarter
- 1:39:48repeats. I'm trying to think of something
- 1:39:50unsafe right that that's what I'm trying to get to so they
- 1:39:52they describe to you, hey, my high school coach is doing this
- 1:39:55this and I'm just trashed. I can barely run.
- 1:39:59I just want to quit and just come to you.
- 1:40:02What do you do if she? Is I would say, well, have you
- 1:40:07talked to like, what are the other athletes saying?
- 1:40:09Where other coaches, what other coaches are there?
- 1:40:12You know, if you're trashed or you're hurting, have you talked
- 1:40:14to the trainers, whether the train, what are the trainers
- 1:40:16saying? You start asking more.
- 1:40:18I start asking more questions, you know, because, you know,
- 1:40:22maybe that's not the same for all the different athletes.
- 1:40:25You know, she says they did this, they did this.
- 1:40:27Well, what did the other 30 athletes, you know, what are
- 1:40:29they saying? Or is it just you?
- 1:40:31So I tend to ask more questions because as I continue to say it,
- 1:40:35like when we're in that that period of when I don't have the
- 1:40:39athlete and they want to complain, like how do I, you
- 1:40:42know, well, what are the other athletes saying?
- 1:40:44You're trying to balance, I'm hearing you say I'm trying to
- 1:40:46balance what what is unsafe versus what is you know you are
- 1:40:50dealing with 1418 year old kids, correct?
- 1:40:52Be real here. Are they singling you out or is
- 1:40:55this what they're doing with everybody?
- 1:40:57And how is it really 40 twos and is it really?
- 1:40:59Every day? Is it really every day OK?
- 1:41:01I love that. And so.
- 1:41:03You asked. I think you ask more questions
- 1:41:06like when you have, when I have an athlete that I've been
- 1:41:08working with for nine months and they have this, OK, well, well,
- 1:41:11whatever. What is everyone else saying?
- 1:41:12What's the trainer saying? Because I'm sure if you're
- 1:41:14feeling bad, have you seen the trainer?
- 1:41:16What does other coaches saying? You try to use wisdom on how you
- 1:41:19piece the information together to really see.
- 1:41:22OK, you ready for this one? I am.
- 1:41:26All those situations are real life.
- 1:41:27And this third one as well. OK, our mythical athlete Sydney,
- 1:41:32when she's with you, you see her Sprint prowess and that she's a
- 1:41:38like AI won't say world class because that's, you know, 1070,
- 1:41:42you know, Melissa Jefferson world.
- 1:41:44But but she's she's high level Division One, like 11, flattish.
- 1:41:49You can tell from her testing and things like that.
- 1:41:52The high school coach sees her more as a 400m runner and she's
- 1:41:57very good. The 400 by the way, like the the
- 1:41:59no, I mean, you know, if someone's running 11 flat, you
- 1:42:01probably running 5253, you know, or whatever the equipment was.
- 1:42:05And so doesn't runs on the relays and stuff, you know, 4 by
- 1:42:08ones, but doesn't have her do the one and two.
- 1:42:11She's 404 by 4, four by one, and maybe she chomps or something
- 1:42:14like that. And you think that's possibly
- 1:42:20hurting her recruiting And not not, not unsafe.
- 1:42:24No one's doing anything unsafe here.
- 1:42:26But you, you both have a different philosophy of where
- 1:42:28this athlete should focus on. You're probably both right, by
- 1:42:30the way, because he's a stud, right?
- 1:42:33But you really think like, man, hey, this this person actually,
- 1:42:36this could be an NCAA Division one national champ, which means
- 1:42:39she has a chance of going pro. You know, how do you handle that
- 1:42:42situation? I would answer very simple.
- 1:42:46A college coach can back into the numbers.
- 1:42:49If she's running to 400 and she's running 52, they can do
- 1:42:52the math of what her 200 is the 100.
- 1:42:54So it actually wouldn't be doing her.
- 1:42:56I I wouldn't say she should be doing that.
- 1:42:59Well, the fast is fast. If she can run to 452, I know
- 1:43:03what she can do in the 200. I know what she's going to do in
- 1:43:05the 100. You're not actually holding back
- 1:43:08her recruiting because it's not like someone's going to go O52O.
- 1:43:11Man if she was letting flat I'd recruit her.
- 1:43:12It's like bro if she's 52. Bro any any any legit college
- 1:43:17track and field coach will look at that and say.
- 1:43:20Oh. She's strong, she can before
- 1:43:23she's doing that. This is not hurting her.
- 1:43:26So that's that's. I.
- 1:43:27Think that's what I think. High school.
- 1:43:31Coach. Club coach.
- 1:43:32Like when I I see a lot of high school kids, you I'm thinking
- 1:43:35like a college coach I got in that scenario.
- 1:43:38That's not going to, that's not going to hurt.
- 1:43:40That's actually going to make her more valuable.
- 1:43:44Oh, she can run the open 4, The 2. 1/4 by.
- 1:43:47Fours. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:43:50About those things, right? Right, right, right.
- 1:43:52Yeah, that's a good point. So I love that.
- 1:43:54That's how I will respond to that.
- 1:43:56Don't keep running it. You know, I wish there were some
- 1:44:01high school coaches that had your attitude.
- 1:44:03I wish there were other club coaches that had your attitude
- 1:44:06at least some point. Like you always tell people,
- 1:44:07it's like I don't do any background checks.
- 1:44:11I don't know, Bradley right now might be giving us a load of it.
- 1:44:14I don't know. Who knows, though, are the
- 1:44:16people that are around him right?
- 1:44:18So, but but here's the other thing.
- 1:44:20This is what's really interesting about the podcast
- 1:44:22because it's reach is if someone's BS ING first of all,
- 1:44:27no one's no one's forced to be here.
- 1:44:29No right. So he's putting himself out
- 1:44:31there and either he's telling truth or not telling truth.
- 1:44:34It will come to light because of social media.
- 1:44:35Someone's going to come on there and be like, whoa, this Bradley,
- 1:44:38do let me tell you what he really did, blah, blah, blah,
- 1:44:40blah, blah, blah, blah. Or because you're more
- 1:44:43incentivized to tell the truth, he's telling the truth.
- 1:44:45So I really, I really do appreciate that.
- 1:44:48Bradley, what you know, we got to start wrapping up here in a
- 1:44:51second. What's the, you know, you're so
- 1:44:53young. Do you do you think you're old?
- 1:44:55I wonder if like when I was young what I mean 1000.
- 1:45:00Keep going, Mike Thousand. Just keep fall.
- 1:45:02Just go ahead and fall off the Cliff.
- 1:45:03Yeah, yeah, you know exactly. Where I'm at, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:06I have 1000 questions all in one question.
- 1:45:07Yeah. So when I was younger, I
- 1:45:09remember as a 1718 year old kid thinking like 30 year olds,
- 1:45:11like, dude, you're 1 foot in the grave.
- 1:45:13And now I'm, you know, a half a year away from being 50 and I'm
- 1:45:16like, people feel pretty good. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:19Clap that I made it this long. Yeah.
- 1:45:20That's that's all. There's no accomplishment.
- 1:45:22I didn't have a heart attack yet.
- 1:45:24But but, but I wonder, you know, you're but now I look as a 50
- 1:45:26year old, I see a 34 year old. I'm like, Oh my God, you're so
- 1:45:28young. Like I was four years into my
- 1:45:30career, Gil, at this point, you know, that's a pup.
- 1:45:33You know, 16 more years have gone by.
- 1:45:36What's the not, what's the end game?
- 1:45:39Because I don't think it's fair, especially for a 34 year old,
- 1:45:41because you don't know what are you gearing towards?
- 1:45:45Are you wanting to, do you see yourself going into college
- 1:45:49coaching? Do you want to take this club
- 1:45:51Sprint free training model and blow it up?
- 1:45:55Do you want to coach nothing but high schoolers?
- 1:45:59Do you want to go back and become an athletic
- 1:46:01administrator? You know what what?
- 1:46:03What are you thinking as you continue to develop in your
- 1:46:05career? Oh man, I love, I love this
- 1:46:08question. I think.
- 1:46:12More in game I I would consider in games I, I there's a couple
- 1:46:16things I want to do. I want to keep coaching.
- 1:46:18I really like high school athletes.
- 1:46:20I think that's those are those formative years where we can
- 1:46:24shine lighting and give them encouragement and hope and and
- 1:46:28track and field teachers so much about life as we as we know.
- 1:46:32I I. Truly would love to continue to
- 1:46:35coach, do that full time, but also blow up this remotion
- 1:46:39application to be honest and hopefully you know, we exit and
- 1:46:45I can just coach and then go into ministry full time.
- 1:46:47That's the end game. Is that right?
- 1:46:50That's the end game. So when you ask me that
- 1:46:51question, you know, I share with my wife like, you know, like I
- 1:46:55really feel like the Lord has called me to coach and do
- 1:46:58remotion and he's. Like.
- 1:47:02Lord willing, we blow this up, it exits and all these different
- 1:47:05things that we as entrepreneurs expired, you know, and hope and
- 1:47:09dream to do. I said I.
- 1:47:10Want to go in and I want to go into ministry and that's the end
- 1:47:15game if I can you know the Lord is giving me these things and he
- 1:47:19blesses it and moves it then I will coach high school kids and
- 1:47:22I will be in ministry and that is the end game for me Mike
- 1:47:26that's cool is to serve and. And that's what track and field
- 1:47:30has been for me, yeah. And so that's the end game I.
- 1:47:35Love it. That's the beginning game.
- 1:47:37I love that. Yeah.
- 1:47:38All right, here's my challenges to you.
- 1:47:39I already gave you one. You already gave me one, Coach
- 1:47:42Foster. I got to.
- 1:47:42Reach coach. Yeah, find him and just say
- 1:47:45thank you. And and again, you know, so many
- 1:47:46blessings have gone your way and you've therefore have become a
- 1:47:49blessing to a lot of other people.
- 1:47:51You know, we stand as as people in general, but as track
- 1:47:53coaches, we stand on the shoulders of giants.
- 1:47:56You know, the the high school coach that saw something and you
- 1:47:59said you should run track man. Like that started something that
- 1:48:02would seem like a very innocuous thing.
- 1:48:04You're meeting like like a high school kid playing track that's
- 1:48:06great. Only 7% actually go on to NCAA
- 1:48:08track. So it's not like they thought
- 1:48:09that could be the possibility. Like you're fast.
- 1:48:11Go over there and try that and look what that has done right.
- 1:48:14So you stand on that persons shoulder.
- 1:48:16You stand on coach burden, coach blacks shoulder of what they
- 1:48:19taught you coach and you stand on a Stew and Andreas and Dan
- 1:48:22Path. They taught you a lot of things
- 1:48:24right. And so for your for that Gardner
- 1:48:27web coach, it's it's it's good for him to see because sometimes
- 1:48:30we forget about that and we're in our in our immediate bubble
- 1:48:34what's going on right now and we forget, Oh man, I'm impacting
- 1:48:37kids. That coach needs to know that he
- 1:48:39is impacting kids, even though he's not coaching them.
- 1:48:42It's easier. He's not easy, easier to see the
- 1:48:45kids that I right in front of me, how I impact them.
- 1:48:47But kids that I recruited and how I treated them and what
- 1:48:50suggestions I gave them, how I impacted them is much, much
- 1:48:53harder. And he needs to see that his
- 1:48:54impact, his positive impact on young people is much, much
- 1:48:57larger. So that was 1-2.
- 1:48:59I want to encourage you specifically for the remotion
- 1:49:03app, because I know now I know you and I know Matt Davis very
- 1:49:06pretty well as well. Love, love what you're doing.
- 1:49:08I want to bless that is think about doing some of these Gill
- 1:49:111918 project podcast. I think it'd be interesting
- 1:49:15because you knew more than one. You know, I need there's like
- 1:49:17200 and something days outside of the 52, you know, connections
- 1:49:22podcast, right? So I need as much content as
- 1:49:24possible. So you can do multiple it.
- 1:49:25It might be interesting to see, you know, pre launch, like, hey,
- 1:49:29here, here's something that's coming online by say February,
- 1:49:32end of January. Here's what we're working on.
- 1:49:35Here's why. You know, that's kind of a a
- 1:49:37podcast again, Ted talks of track and field, right?
- 1:49:40And then once you launch, of course, you know, hey, you know,
- 1:49:41there could be something about launching.
- 1:49:43How do you use it? What are best practices?
- 1:49:45I would also encourage you to, you know, be, even though you
- 1:49:48don't necessarily have the app today or you know, tomorrow,
- 1:49:52there's track clinics, there's a great 1, you know, we talked
- 1:49:54about earlier about the the one in Georgia, they do a great job
- 1:49:57there. There's talks that you can give
- 1:49:59around how to use technology in your Sprint training.
- 1:50:03You know, here's some things that we're thinking about in the
- 1:50:06remotion app that would be able to help a high school coach or a
- 1:50:09college coach, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:50:10And then kind of in a different spin, you're, I see just a lot
- 1:50:16of unification with you, you know, bringing people together
- 1:50:18and, and in positive manners. Think about in your area, Rome
- 1:50:24and its surrounding area of doing some, some kind of clinic,
- 1:50:29not, not camps. You may also do camps like with
- 1:50:31kids and stuff, but like some kind of even if you get to
- 1:50:35people, there's been some amazing relationships built in
- 1:50:38this profession for people who just got people together at
- 1:50:41their house, like hey, coach, coach XY and Z come over, bring
- 1:50:48lunch or we'll order in and let's just talk sprinting for
- 1:50:52for a few hours. One of one of my favorite
- 1:50:54people. Do you know if you're on social?
- 1:50:56So maybe you know, Mike J up in Iowa is that name.
- 1:50:59Mike J is a, there's a, he's not a track coach.
- 1:51:03I don't even know if he's been a track coach, but he's he's the
- 1:51:06voice of Iowa track and field. So he, he announces the Drake
- 1:51:10Relays. He's also announced the NCAA
- 1:51:16championship, stuff like that. But he's a big, he's a big Iowa
- 1:51:19track guy, the Trek guy Foundation.
- 1:51:21He gives shoes to to kids who need it, things like that.
- 1:51:23But he does in the fall, he he goes, he organizes these around
- 1:51:27cross country coaches. They meet in the driveway.
- 1:51:28They have these driveway summits, if you will.
- 1:51:31They all just get in their driveway.
- 1:51:33They all bring their chairs and they talk about how do you have
- 1:51:37train an 800m runner who's running cross country this year?
- 1:51:39How do you train girls the first time?
- 1:51:43They're like very grass roots. I I see that new in that area
- 1:51:50with you, maybe more of your Forte, maybe don't do cross
- 1:51:52country, but you know, doing Sprint just, you know, just a
- 1:51:55very informal that sometimes we think we have to do these
- 1:51:57grandiose things. In reality, you can go to
- 1:51:59someone's driveway with chairs and a couple of drinks and
- 1:52:03really create fellowship and correct and knowledge settings.
- 1:52:06So I challenge you on that Bradley.
- 1:52:08Other than that, man, we got to go.
- 1:52:10This is the end of it. You're awesome.
- 1:52:13Thank you so much. I love, love, love your journey.
- 1:52:15And what's cool to me is, you know, using like a 400 meter
- 1:52:18analogy, you're barely in the blocks.
- 1:52:20I know it's a 30 something year old man.
- 1:52:22You could think like, I'm getting close to the end.
- 1:52:24You know, I passed the 200m mark.
- 1:52:26Mike, bro, you're not even at the 100m mark.
- 1:52:28You have so many more years to coach, so many more years to
- 1:52:30influence other people in a positive manner, young people
- 1:52:33and coaches. This is where I see, you know,
- 1:52:37that it's easy to talk about the easier to see the the athlete
- 1:52:40side of it, But I think you could be a bigger influencer on
- 1:52:44coaches, other men and women who choose this profession and then
- 1:52:48you'll that'll give you a bigger platform.
- 1:52:49You'll affect way more kids that way than just the kids that you
- 1:52:52coach, and that's going to be a lot in its own.
- 1:52:54So just really pumped to be on the sidelines and watch it
- 1:52:57happen. Man.
- 1:52:58It's it's really exciting for me and I think it's going to be
- 1:53:00something very promising for you, your wife, your family.
- 1:53:04It's you stand on the giants of your mom and dad too, by the
- 1:53:07way. But I think that, you know, with
- 1:53:09great examples you have, you're going to continue and build a
- 1:53:11great examples for others. Yeah, Mike, I received that.
- 1:53:14Thank you, brother. I appreciate it.
- 1:53:15Thank you. Absolutely.
- 1:53:17Absolutely, guys, thank you so much for being here.
- 1:53:19Short outro. Love you guys to death.
- 1:53:21Make sure you join us next week. If you're interested in doing a
- 1:53:24Guild 1918 project, hit me up on Twitter, DM, text, all that
- 1:53:27stuffs in the show notes below and we'll see you next week.
- 1:53:30We'll do it all over again. All right.
- 1:53:31Thanks guys. If it goes to appreciate the
- 1:53:38coach, the ones that point people most every season needs a
- 1:53:41voice of reason speaking the growth you got to prep before
- 1:53:44you carry the load ice coffee to the soul.
- 1:53:46For those of us who stand to go proper handoff to stay in the
- 1:53:49zone which you packing for the road.
- 1:53:51There's more than one way to go. Taking notes that's paying
- 1:53:54you're told it ain't practice If your purpose ain't clear, it
- 1:53:57can't happen until you listen. With both is can't mentor
- 1:54:00without a mentor of his of experience.
- 1:54:02You can reinvent those years every plan's got to stand and
- 1:54:05deliver up to and the price sacrifice can you give up you.
- 1:54:09It's a choice and a fight not a win or lose.
- 1:54:11It's not a ploy boy device. Y'all can make more moves.
- 1:54:13It's not about how to it's all about why you don't know till
- 1:54:17you know who you are inside 6,000,000 waste of time, choose
- 1:54:20none so we all cross the finish line.
- 1:54:22The work ain't done so we learn from the experts but y'all got
- 1:54:25to put in the leg work. Your athletics is the network.
- 1:54:28It's all about connections put together for the profession.
- 1:54:31To where?
