- 2:49Store is one of the guys behind the gathering joids us now from the campus
- 2:52of West Virginia State University Institute. Chase, good morning, Welcome to the
- 2:54show. Good morning, Dave, glad to be here. The first matchup
- 3:00is at nine thirty this morning, Chase, and it's a girls matchup with
- 3:04the Hurricane taking on Ravenswood. In all thirty two games between now and late
- 3:08Thursday night. That's a lot of basketball, mister Hatcher, a lot of
- 3:13basketball. This year, we have an extra day, so this is the
- 3:15first time we've had four days. Let's you know, We've usually had three
- 3:20days. So we talked about it last year, trying to get a fourth
- 3:23day because of the teams that have just you know, that have messaged us
- 3:29or called us about wanting to come to the to the parm Our shootout,
- 3:32and so we decided to try to do another day and get the kids a
- 3:38chance to come here and play. And I will mention that a complete list
- 3:43of all the games, you know, because again it goes back and between
- 3:46the boys and the girls. And there's a lot of local teams here,
- 3:49but a lot of teams have traveled a great distance to be here as well.
- 3:53It's available on the social media pages of par More Stores and Chase.
- 3:58You couldn't ask for a better venue than Virginia State. I mean, there's
- 4:00plenty of free parking, just a phenomenal place to watch a basketball game.
- 4:03Yeah, one hundred percent. I've been through gyms all throughout the country watching
- 4:08basketball and this is top notche. I mean, they treat us well here.
- 4:12They take care of us. But just if you're a fan, I
- 4:15mean, just to be able to watch that game here and it's just there's
- 4:18no bad sea it's I mean, it's it's top notch for sure. I
- 4:23would put it up against anybody, and it's a great It's great for Westervirginia
- 4:27State University to Chase because it gets a whole lot of high school kids.
- 4:30Again, we're talking about thirty two teams in all. It gets them their
- 4:33parents, their grandparents on campus as well, so there's a there's a win
- 4:39here for wester Virginia State as well. Absolutely. You know, I know
- 4:43some of the coaches that last year took their teams around the campus and let
- 4:47them look at different things and see, you know what all this campus has
- 4:53to offer, because you know, I graduated from here and it's just even
- 4:59since I've graduated, but it's just, I mean it's grown and just it's
- 5:01a it's a beautiful place, beautiful campus, and we're glad to be here
- 5:06for sure. Talk with Chase Atcher from Parmars Stores about the Parmarer Stores Shootout

- 5:38Of course, your brother Mark was a legendary coach there. What would it
- 5:42have been like for you to play in an event like this, because again
- 5:46there's really nothing else in the state like it. Well, it would have
- 5:49been a memorable experience for sure. I mean to come over here with your
- 5:55with your fans you know, and me from Logan and playing for Logan.
- 5:58You know, we always bring a big crowd. And anytime you can play
- 6:01in the Charleston area with the news reporters and the news and you know now
- 6:05with Twitter and all that kind of stuff, it would be just it would
- 6:11be something that I would always remember and to be able to experience with my
- 6:14teammates and coaches. So it's just a great event. I mean it's and
- 6:18you get to if you want to, you know, get for ten dollars.
- 6:23You can watch all these games starting at nine thirty and going to eight
- 6:26thirty to night for ten dollars. Now you can't leave and come back,
- 6:30but it would just you know, as a basketball fan, you know,
- 6:32I think if I came over here, I just enjoyed watching games and trying
- 6:36to stay here and watch games too, I mean, just just to experience
- 6:40it. And you know, Chase, there's so many people to work to
- 6:43pull this off. So I want to say hats off President Cage and the
- 6:46people that stayed, including men's basketball coach poor Rick Green to GW Mick Price
- 6:51from Ravenswood, Mikey wall Palm Marshwortz. It takes a lot to put this
- 6:56entire thing together. Yeah, it does. I mean we start working on
- 6:59it while we're here at the tournament. I mean, we got people messages
- 7:02already wanting to be in next year's tournament. It's you know, we give
- 7:08every kid a T shirt with our logo on it in the year, but
- 7:14it's it's it's a lot of work. We get T shirts, we get
- 7:16different things that we do. We put it on Twitter, we we we
- 7:20do every game live that way people can watch that. You know that they
- 7:26can't make it their work or whatever. But it's it's a great event.
- 7:30I mean, it's it's a super event. That's there is no other event
- 7:34like this in the state of West Virginia for sure. You know, you're
- 7:38talking about kids playing four days of basketball, all through the day and all
- 7:44through the evening. So it's, uh, it's a tremendous event. And
- 7:46you know when you're talking about thirty two teams too, I mean you just
- 7:49do the simple math. A lot of these teams aren't going to make the
- 7:51state tournament, and maybe they don't have the history of one of the great
- 7:57basketball traditions in the States. So it's an opportunity for them again. And
- 8:00they're coming from all regions, from the Northern Panhandle, the Eastern Panhandle,
- 8:03out of state, they're all coming here. So it's a great opportunity for
- 8:05them too. Because some of these teams may not make it back to Charleston
- 8:09here next month, so it's a good opportunity for those folks as well.
- 8:13Yeah, like last year, Jefferson came down and you know, that's a
- 8:18pretty good trip. And then this year we got Martinsburg coming, So I
- 8:22mean that's it's unbelievable for those teams to come down here. You know,
- 8:26we get them to play two games. But last year Jefferson went to the
- 8:30Capitol and got the tour of the capital, and you know, I don't
- 8:35know, they probably not a lot of those kids will ever get to do
- 8:37that again. I think martins Work might be doing something like that this year
- 8:41where they're going over to the Capitol and having lunch and getting to tour of
- 8:45the Capitol and getting to kind of see a little bit of that as well.
- 8:50All right, Chase, I know you got to get to it because
- 8:52game starts at nine to thirty the first one, and again, the way
- 8:54these games work is there's not a whole lot of time between the games.
- 8:58Literally, at halftime of game one, the game two participants will be out
- 9:03there doing their warm ups and it literally, what is it ten minutes between
- 9:07games something like that. Ten to fifteen minute stops. Yeah, we try
- 9:11to stay it on the schedule for sure, because if not, they can
- 9:13get out of hand. But you know it's uh, they get ten minutes
- 9:18after the game boom, and then we start and warm up at halftime,
- 9:22like you said, And it's a it's a boom boom thing. You know,
- 9:26it's a it's a NonStop thing for sure. All right, Chase,
- 9:31We'll let you get back to it, man, I appreciate it. We'll
- 9:31see you over there later today. Thanks a lot, Thank you very much.
- 9:35Come out and watch us. Some ten dollars to see all the games.
- 9:39N't be to Chase Hatcher again from Parmar Stores. First game tips off
- 9:43at nine thirty this morning. Eight games boys and girls each day all the
- 9:48way through Thursday night. So again, uh, game changer, I didn't
- 9:52really mention them enough. This is an anti drug organization. Game Changer is
- 9:58a big, big part of this as well. At all what happens on
- 10:00the campus of West Virginia State University again. In game one, it's a
- 10:03girls matchup with Hurricane and Ravenswood. That's followed by the by Ravenswood and Greenbrier
- 10:09West and James Monroe and Gilmour County and a girl's game followed by the Calvary
- 10:13Baptist Boys taking that Robert C. Byrd. Then a girl's matchup with Riverside
- 10:18and Williamstown. Then at five point thirty promised to be an epic match up
- 10:20with the boys of Charleston Catholic taken on the Bluefield Beavers. Then a boys
- 10:24game featuring Wyoming East and Williamstown, and then day one will close the Charleston
- 10:28Catholic taking on Saint Albans. That's a girls match up again. Game schedules

- 13:37me have my chair back. You're welcome. I really didn't want to give
- 13:39it up, but I guess since you're here, I will. What I'm
- 13:41referring to is the last time Judge Acres was on the show, she said
- 13:45in the host chair, and I was I was sitting at home you look
- 13:48natural in the host chair though, So anytime you want to come host this
- 13:50thing, you know, you're more than welcome to. Oh if that's a
- 13:52real offer, I'll come do it. Yeah, anytime, anytime, all
- 13:54right. So Valentine's Day is a week from Wednesday, and you're getting ready
- 13:58to to get some people married up. I am. This is the fourth
- 14:03annual King of Hearts Day where we set aside the entire day to perform weddings.
- 14:07We do some adoptions on that day too, because it's also a nice
- 14:11day to do that, But we decorate our courtroom and anyone who wants to
- 14:13get married on that day, we welcome him in and we marry him up.
- 14:16That's what we do on Valentine's Day. Talk about the history behind this
- 14:20event, Well, Charlie King, who is my predecessor, did this sept
- 14:24for several years in a row. He set aside the February fourteenth, and
- 14:28he called it the King of Heart's Day. We all had a good time.
- 14:31Those were days I usually didn't have cases because I was an assistant prosecutor
- 14:35then, but I would come over and watch and it was just really nice
- 14:37to watch people get married all day long. How many people did you marry
- 14:41up last year? I can't remember. I think maybe eleven, maybe twelve
- 14:45couples could have been more. I can't remember what I told you. Well,
- 14:48you called me up, and actually on Valentine's Day, I'll probably have
- 14:52you call up from there. In between the ceremonies. I think that was
- 14:56rund around eleven or twelve, I think so. And it does take a
- 15:00lot of time, you know, eleven or twelve people come in with their
- 15:03families. We let them take pictures, do whatever they want to do.
- 15:05So as much time as people want to spend, we allow them to spend
- 15:09because it's really nice for my staff to get to do it as well.
- 15:13And what time do you start. We start as early as people want to
- 15:16anytime from you know, nine to four thirty, we will do them.
- 15:20You know, last year I did have a social media commenter who said that
- 15:22I was I should not be doing this because I was forcing people to get
- 15:26married. So I want to be clear to your radio listeners. I am
- 15:30not forcing anyone to get married, but anyone who wants to is welcome on
- 15:33Valentine's Day. No one is being forced to know. There's no guns or
- 15:37anything like that at least not from you. Maybe the maybe you're bailiff or
- 15:41something. I don't know. Talking again with Judge Mary Cleare acers about the

- 16:08you. So have you ever? How am I going to phrase this?
- 16:14Judge? Have you ever done any follow up with people to see if they're
- 16:17still married? I have not yet. I've thought about it. So we
- 16:19get Every year the Supreme Court asks us how many weddings we performed, and
- 16:23we tell them and I think we just did that count for twenty twenty three,
- 16:27which made me count when I started in twenty twenty one, and so
- 16:30we have done close to three hundred weddings in the three I'll be three years
- 16:36in March. So well, it's going to know people are still getting married.
- 16:40I guess a lot of people get married, and I'm always surprised,
- 16:41you know, lots of people show up, they just decide that day to
- 16:45get married, and they do it well. And I think for the and
- 16:48I'm going to stereotype guys here for a moment, you know, next to
- 16:52maybe Christmas or the opening day of baseball season. It's an easy day to
- 16:55remember too, that you were married on Valentine's That's exactly right. So any
- 16:59guy out there doesn't know what to do, I can help you. Now.
- 17:02Now would be the time to do it. Do you need to call
- 17:04ahead or make an appointment or anything, or you do not? We take
- 17:07walk ins. If you want to call ahead to set aside a specific time
- 17:11because you don't want to wait, you can definitely do that. It is
- 17:12three zero four three five seven zero three six seven. That is my assistant
- 17:18Kim. She will set you up for whatever time it is that she want
- 17:22to do it. And you talked about the families coming down there as well,
- 17:26so there's plenty of opportunities for them to take pictures. Do you let
- 17:30people record the whole thing if they want to just do it on their phone
- 17:33or bring a videographer with her, I sure do whatever they want to do.
- 17:36People do it all different ways. I've had people play music and walk
- 17:40down the aisle, open the doors. I've had, you know, pretty
- 17:44extravagant setups where brides wear very big dresses, they have flowers, they have
- 17:49flower girls. I have, and I have people who just come in with
- 17:52jeans and t shirt and want three minutes. So it's whatever anyone wants for
- 17:59that particular, it's their day. Just I guess kind of be aware of
- 18:02the next person waiting there. Do you have like an on deck circle or
- 18:04anything or they I'm just trying to picture this because I didn't get to come
- 18:07down last year. I Thinkerry, who just said, came down last year
- 18:10and to do the story on it, but I didn't get to come down.
- 18:11I mean, I'm just thinking. You have people like you in warming
- 18:14up, you know, like get like at a baseball game or something.
- 18:15Sometimes if there's a line, they'll be out in the hallway waiting, and
- 18:19it's nice to just have so many people in and it's a good time to
- 18:23be in the courthouse. A lot of people associate bad things with being in
- 18:26the courthouse, so that's true. This is a good thing that you can
- 18:29do in the courthouse, and that's what we look forward to doing. Can

- 19:02We have it decorated, they make sure everything stays together. Kim of course
- 19:07coordinates everything. My assistant Kim Gregory has been there. I am not certain
- 19:11of the exact amount of time, but I know that it is somewhere around
- 19:15forty years she has been. She was in the Prosecutor's office with Judge King.
- 19:19She came over when he came over to the courthouse back in the eighties,
- 19:22and she has been a friend of mine ever since I was there,
- 19:25and so she continues to be my secretary. She works very hard and she
- 19:29coordinates the whole thing. Now, if somebody comes to you and they say,
- 19:32well, we want I mean there's obviously things when it comes to weddings
- 19:34that you have to say that you got to read out the book and what
- 19:37the law says and whatever. But if people want to do their own vows
- 19:41or anything like that, is that it's just like it's just like any conventional
- 19:45wedding. I guess it just like any conventional wedding. If there's something they
- 19:47want in, I'll put it in. If they want to do it themselves,
- 19:49I'll let them. All they really need me for is to pronounce them
- 19:53married and to sign the license. Yeah, so it's really whatever people want
- 19:59to do well, And I think that's there's something to be said for that
- 20:02too, because a lot of times, and I'm not going to judge people
- 20:04or what everybody. Everybody does, what everybody does. But but sometimes with
- 20:08weddings, if they're in a you know, they had these big, extravagant
- 20:11things, and they spend thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars. They have
- 20:15showers, and they have tuxedos, and they have fifteen bridesmaids whatever. At
- 20:18the end of the day, you get the same piece of papers, same
- 20:22lifetime together. Yeah, in theory, in theory, in theory, in
- 20:26theory, absolutely, because I think I don't know that these statistics have changed
- 20:30that much, but it was like fifty percent of them are going to I've
- 20:33heard that statistic. I don't know if it's true or not. I think
- 20:36there are lawyers around town that on Valentine's Day give away to free divorces.
- 20:38Rusty Webbles one of those who die if you did do that for a while.
- 20:41I think there's another firm in town who's doing it now as well.
- 20:45But I'm not doing that. I just I just had this image judge of
- 20:49you know, you pronouncing them and then you know somebody and I'll pick on
- 20:52Rusty a little because he's a friend of mine. Rusty's out in the hall
- 20:56going just in case it doesn't work out, you know, you can have
- 20:57this that would not be allowed. Have you ever had let me ask you
- 21:02this, maybe not particularly for this day, on the King of Hearts Day,
- 21:06but you have you ever had a situation I don't want to get into
- 21:08too much detail here with names or anything, but have you ever had a
- 21:11situation with a wedding that's gone a little sideways? You know when I mean
- 21:15somebody tried to stop? Because you see that in the movies, you know,
- 21:18speak now forever hold your piece. Have you ever actually seen that happen?
- 21:21Has ever had somebody try to speak? Now? I have never had
- 21:25anyone try to speak now. I have had some I've had one situation where
- 21:29I was like, I'm not sure this person really wants to do it.
- 21:33So we stopped for a minute and we made sure everything was okay, and
- 21:36it just turned out that that person really did not like to be in front
- 21:38of people. Oh okay, that's another thing. I can't remember what statistic
- 21:42is, seventy five or eighty percent of the population does not like to stand
- 21:45up or be in front of people. Oh yeah, Well, the number
- 21:48one fear of people in general. It's not water, it's not spiders or
- 21:52whatever. It's speaking in public is the number one fear of most people.
- 21:56That's exactly right. So this also accommodates folks like that who don't want a
- 22:02big audience. And on that day that was the problem. I'll see,
- 22:06he just really was. He just locks up if he has to say anything
- 22:11in front of anyone. So well, I mean, you know, hopefully
- 22:15it all Hopefully it all turned out. I didn't trace that one down,
- 22:17but well, we didn't put you in that position to it to have to
- 22:21do that. But again, I think it's I think it's kind of a
- 22:22cool thing that you do. And and again continuing on that tradition of judge
- 22:30king, so here here's the thing. Guys or girls. Again, I
- 22:33don't want to stereotype the guys or guys. You know, this would be
- 22:36a great opportunity, you know, for you to make an impression. Come
- 22:40down there and stand in front of the judge. Go ahead and go ahead
- 22:42and do it, go ahead and commit you may as well. Life doesn't.
- 22:47Life's too short right now? How long have you been married? If
- 22:48you don't mind my ask him, I have been married for twenty two years.
- 22:52Okay, we got married in two thousand and one. Okay, so
- 22:56we've been married for a long time. Well, I'm carry the three double,
- 23:00not not, I'm thirty thirty two years here. Wow, yeah,
- 23:04I hope it will be thirty two later this year. Yes, so we
- 23:08are. We've been married a long time and we're very happy together. And
- 23:14I do like to do Valentine's Day as well to watch people get married because
- 23:18it does remind me of the life that JB and I have together, and
- 23:21I hope I can do that for other people. Judge is always it's a
- 23:25pleasure to have you on the show to talk about this great day again,
- 23:29your continuation of this idea started by Judge King. We'll have you calling up
- 23:33last time on Valentine's Day because last year I remember that you were kind of
- 23:38a little bit hairy there and we were texting micro and forth saying, okay,
- 23:41are you are you ready? Are you ready to go? Because you
- 23:42got of gotta get it in between ceremonies there. Absolutely, And like I
- 23:47said, we don't know exactly how many people will show up, so I
- 23:49will try to call as best I can. I'm sure I'll be able to
- 23:52fit it in. Well. If we have a whole bunch of people,
- 23:56I will stop for a minute and call you and letch Do you know that
- 23:59when I first started I guess it would have been my second year in radio.
- 24:04One of our one of the guys that worked at the radio station with
- 24:08us, actually got married on the air. Oh no kidding, Yeah,
- 24:12we actually and people may remember him because he used to work here. Kid
- 24:17Conley, he worked on ninety six to one back in the Wolf days.
- 24:22I think it was he and Amanda did the morning show here and he's down
- 24:25in Rome, Georgia right now doing radio down there. But Kid and I
- 24:27actually started in radio together. Whatever. But he got married his first marriage.
- 24:32He got married in nineteen I don't want to say nineteen ninety, and
- 24:36we actually broadcast the entire ceremony on the air. Now, the marriage didn't
- 24:41last, but that's neither here nor there. It was still kind of a
- 24:45unique iday. Maybe we should look into doing Maybe we should, you know,
- 24:48if there's any if there's any brave soul out there who wants to get
- 24:49married on the radio Valentine's Day, we can do it. Ryan's not married,
- 24:52my producer, Ryan, would you maybe we can just I can't see
- 24:56Ryan from where I am. I think he maybe just dove under the deck.
- 25:00We'll get Ryan in here, we'll get we'll get the ride married on
- 25:02the air. But yeah, we actually did the live broadcast on the air.
- 25:04Well, that's pretty neat, yep, it was. It was a
- 25:07good time back in today. All right. So again, it's next week,
- 25:11and if you want to make an appointment, you can, but you
- 25:14don't necessarily have to give the phone number again three zero four three five seven
- 25:18zero three six seven. I did forget to say you have to get your
- 25:22license from the county Clerk's office first. That's I knew there was something else
- 25:26I wanted to bring up. You can't just show up, you got it.
- 25:27So how does that work as far as the waiting period or whatever is
- 25:33it? It's not like it used to be, right, No, it's
- 25:34not like it used to be. You don't have to wait. You can
- 25:37be in the county Clerk's office, pay their fee. I can't remember what
- 25:40it is, maybe fifteen dollars to get your license, and then walk across
- 25:45the street, go up the elevator of the fourth floor and come to my
- 25:48side and get married right immediately. That part's free. Okay. Well,
- 25:53well, looking forward to talking to you next week. I'm sure our news
- 25:56team will be down there. And again it's it's it's just a fun thing
- 26:00and you get a lot of media attention, you know, not you personally,
- 26:02but I mean the ceremonies do they get to come out and uh and
- 26:04uh. And so if you're thinking about thinking about making the plunge, now
- 26:08would be the time the Supreme Court comes down. That last year they came
- 26:11down, took pictures and put it in the Supreme Court newsletter. So there
- 26:15were a lot of people around the state who do it, not just me,
- 26:17but here in Kannak County, it will be me, all right,
- 26:19Judge Mary clare Acres. I appreciate you being here, and I appreciate you
- 26:23staying on your side of the desk because last time you said in the host
- 26:26chair. But it's really tempting. There are a lot of buttons over there,
- 26:29and well most of them well, as I told you the other day,
- 26:32most of them don't work anyway, so they're just they're just here for
- 26:34the looks. You know, we're redoing the studio. They tell me,
- 26:37yeah, they well they said that when I came to work here and four
- 26:41years ago. But actually i've seen the equipment in the building. They're going
- 26:45to totally redo the studio. And they tell me that I am going to
- 26:48be on camera oh the time, and just like copy is Yeah, so
- 26:51when I'm talking to somebody, if you're on the phone, they'll actually have
- 26:53your picture up there and and so, yeah, I'm going to be on
- 26:56I'm going to be on camera. This is going to be different for me
- 27:00because I'm not thirty two years of this. Man. I'm not used to
- 27:02being on my radio though. That's it's the new medium. That's right.
- 27:06You got to see you in here. Yeah, I'm not looking forward to
- 27:08Judge Mary Clareakers. I appreciate you being here Today. Island Showing five Any

- 32:51gracious. I was at the Marshall University women's and men's basketball game this weekend.
- 32:55It was so fun, so fun. I hated that the women lost,
- 33:00but man o day, they have an amazing team. First loss in
- 33:01the conference. On Saturday, they looked great. And the men's team just
- 33:07shll ACKed this weekend Coastal Carolina. Ye, I mean they just shell ACKed
- 33:10them. I was talking about the Marshall Quarterback Club of it. You know,
- 33:14your presence is requesting. You know, I'm excited and you see that
- 33:16Steve and I are going to be You know how much green I have now
- 33:21because you get a kid there, Now's yeah, a lot. Actually,
- 33:23I mean folks saying, oh, you're here to watch the basketball you know
- 33:27boys there, girls game, I said, girls game, boys game,
- 33:30and the pet band because the I gave birth to the really tall six foot
- 33:34four drummer in the back of the Pet band. So and a big green
- 33:37and white Strive shirt. So yeah, love Marshall. They're having good they're
- 33:42having a good year, having a good year. You're glad to see your
- 33:45family coming around. I know, well I have on my I've got blue
- 33:47and half of my closet's blue and gold and half of it is green and
- 33:51white. And I have been desperately trying to get one of those doormats that
- 33:53says, like, you know, house to house or whatever. But my
- 33:57boys like, Mom, that's so stupid. Don't do that. I'm like,
- 33:59well, you're not here anyway, so you're not gonna look at it.
- 34:01What do you care? Yeah, what do you care? Great weekend,
- 34:05So city Council, we'll meet, we'll meet tonight and let's get serious
- 34:08here for a moment. I am told Mayor, and I talked about this
- 34:13on the show a little bit last week, that there is going to be
- 34:15a presence tonight by some wanting council you and council to adopt a resolution of
- 34:20sorts calling for a ceasefire with the situation in Israel. Your thoughts on that,
- 34:24Yeah, so this is a this is something that we have been discussing
- 34:30at least here in Charleston and in the Mayor's office for gosh, you was
- 34:34a long time. I mean, it wasn't you know October seventh when the
- 34:38attacks happened in Israel and we started to do some outreach to some members of
- 34:44our community. There's there's a lot of hurt and by the way, it's
- 34:46not just October seventh, it's for many, many years, you know,
- 34:51past that. There's a lot of hurt and a lot of pain. Uh.
- 34:54And when members of our Muslim community came to council and asked us for
- 35:00or cease fire at the end of December, December eighteenth, we had heard
- 35:05of. We got an email at the end of the week before, like
- 35:07on the thirteenth or so. Many of us didn't see that email, and
- 35:12so we're surprised to have folks come. Obviously, anybody can come to council
- 35:16and ask for anything, but on the eighteenth, when they had asked for
- 35:20a resolution, you know, resolutions and letters of support are two different things.
- 35:25But we were we try to adhere to the if it is something that
- 35:30we are requesting that we don't have any control over, right, we wrote
- 35:34a letter to the PSC, a letter, not a resolution, not an
- 35:37act of council, but a letter showing our concern about something or an issue
- 35:42that might be out of our jurisdiction. We always feel a letter is better
- 35:45rather than rather than a resolution. We've kind of always held true to that,
- 35:50and so we drafted a letter in support of not only our Muslim community,
- 35:55but also our Jewish community. Because the over whelming majority of council twenty
- 36:01plus members had signed that letter saying, you know, we feel like this
- 36:07is out of our purview, but we understand that members of our community are
- 36:09hurting Muslim community Jewish community, and so let's show a letter of support asking
- 36:15our federal delegation, right, our senators and our congresswomen, to ask for
- 36:21their help in finding a you know, a peaceful resolution in a war that
- 36:24has been going on forever. And so we felt that that would be the
- 36:32best path forward. I've met and I've talked to members of both our Muslim
- 36:37community and Jewish community publicly, privately, and so it's my understanding that they're
- 36:43going to ask to come back again the resolution. Just for folks who don't
- 36:46know, there was a resolution that was put up and it was tabled by
- 36:49the overwhelming majority of council, meaning we've already dealt with We've already addressed this
- 36:53through a letter. But they are just a couple of council members that feel
- 37:00like we need a resolution passed again. The majority of council disagree with that.
- 37:07And so I believe tonight that I don't know this for sure because no
- 37:13member of Council has personally called me to ask for this, but that will
- 37:16be taken off the table or asked to be taken off of the table,
- 37:22which any council member can do, by the way, it's their right to
- 37:23do that, and so that that vote will be held tonight among other things.
- 37:30I mean, we have a pretty packed agenda at council tonight. We're
- 37:35going to be dealing with a lot of important issues of the city and so
- 37:38that also is going to be so it's you know, it's going to be
- 37:40a long council meeting tonight. But there are other important things like the LIFT
- 37:45Center, the Learning, Innovation, Food and Technology Center, which is a
- 37:50huge get for the City of Charleston, thirteen million dollar facility. We're going
- 37:54to be talking about, you know, our funding and our support through that.
- 37:58We were one of the big applicant. To talk about Marshall again it
- 38:00is, you know, we're partnering with Marshall University on this great project,
- 38:06huge multimillion dollar project on the East End. We've got to get some training
- 38:10for our firefighters. We're going to be talking about, you know, streets
- 38:15and traffic. You know, it may not be what people think is the
- 38:17sexy work, but it's the work in municipal government. Dave, you know
- 38:21what it is. You know, paint paint for our roadways, paint potholes,
- 38:24I mean, you know things that we're you know, and is economic
- 38:28development too, and so many of those things are going to be brought up
- 38:31before Council tonight in addition to but you know, I'll just you know,
- 38:36I'll say this. It's it is always, it is always okay in this
- 38:39administration and always has been for folks to voice their opinions to us. That
- 38:44is a okay by all of us, as it should be. But the
- 38:47work of the city is going to continue. It must continue because as you
- 38:52well know, and having worked in government, you work nights, you work
- 38:55weekends, you work holidays, Dave, I've seen you on any of those.
- 39:00And we're going to continue to do the work of all people. But
- 39:04the job in which that I was voted in, thank you two times to
- 39:07do is to make sure that we are saying fiscally sound and that we're keeping
- 39:12our eye. We're also doing budgeting right now. So my days right now
- 39:15are eaten up by budget meetings because we've got to turn that around. We've
- 39:20got to send it to the state because we're required to do that, have
- 39:22them you know, you know, submit it to the state, and then
- 39:27meeting with all of our department directors, going over every single penny to make
- 39:31sure that we're not only funding the departments that need to be funded, but
- 39:36also meeting with our directors to say, you know, what what can we
- 39:38do and where do we have to tighten our belt. So it's a really,
- 39:42really busy time of year for us. It always is, and you
- 39:49know, and of course the you know, the folks are at the state
- 39:52House as well, so we've been on the phone with senators and delegates just
- 39:55asking us questions. Hey, you know, I saw this bill come through.
- 39:59What do you think about that? Or you got any advice on this?
- 40:01And so our days are also spent, you know, as they should
- 40:05be, on the phone with our senators and delegates and representative saying hey,
- 40:07I'm looking at this piece is legislation? Is this cool with cities? Is
- 40:12this not? And so it's right after the first of the year. It's
- 40:16it's a dead sprint where sometimes I think people are like, well, let's
- 40:20just after the first of the year. Let's wait a come, It's not.
- 40:22It's like the game on right thirteen minutes away from Tama Dave Islands showing
- 40:27five anue. I brought to you a part by Morgan to Oregon in America's
- 40:30largest injury law firm, Mayor. The investigation continues into this senseless death last
- 40:37week of a nineteen year old tobacco store clerk there in North Charleston we later
- 40:42learned murdered in a robbery by a fourteen year old This was an employee or
- 40:50a gentleman young man talking about the clerk that from all intents and purposes,
- 40:54I mean, I've read all the stories that we did, any other media
- 40:57outlets have done, just seemed like a good case. It's senselessly murdered by
- 41:00a fourteen year old. Any thoughts on them. As a mother of a
- 41:06child who turned from nineteen to twenty on Saturday, I don't know what else
- 41:12to say except it's sickening. It's awful. I know that they have.
- 41:16We have so many members of our community that are doing outreach to not only
- 41:22our youth. You know, every single day you say to my kids,
- 41:28and when I say my kids, I mean the kids that live in the
- 41:30City of Charleston, because I consider them my kids too, Dave. Every
- 41:34day when we open up our doors to our parking rec centers, and it
- 41:37may not seem like we're you know, oh, well you've got a you
- 41:40know, you got a Jim Amy, You've got a couple of rec centers.
- 41:43No it's not a basketball court. No it's not just a baseball field.
- 41:46No it's not just a swimming pool. Those are connection points to get
- 41:51kids through the door, to put eyeballs on them, to say to them,
- 41:54how are you? What can I do for you? So I take
- 41:58it very serious, the job of not only keeping our kids safe, but
- 42:01also keeping our eyes on kids and trying to help them grow and also to
- 42:07troubleshoot with them, their school and their families. This was a really,
- 42:12really difficult situation for so many, So many kids in our area are hurting.
- 42:19So many kids in our area Dave don't have someone and what we say
- 42:22in our park and Rex community and all the municipal government, just one,
- 42:27just one kid. Put your sites on one kid to help them, to
- 42:30reach out to them, to help empower them, and to troubleshoot with them.
- 42:35That's where we need to start, and it needs to start from the
- 42:37get go. We can ask our teachers, by the way, child of
- 42:42two educators, can't ask our teachers to do everything, by the way,
- 42:45can't ask our police to do everything as well. It does take a village.
- 42:51It takes everybody in this community to keep our eyeballs on the kids who
- 42:54are obviously in crisis, obviously are inis and obviously are in bad situations at
- 43:02home. Talking to with Charleston me or Amy Schulder Goodwin, phone calls of

- 45:42people need to contact Camas and demand they in this not Israel. By the
- 45:45way, Hamas does represent the Palestinians. They voted Hamas terrorists into their government,
- 45:52says a Texter Tech says, how many officers of the Charleston Police Department
- 45:55have voluntarily left the force and sought law enforcement employment elsewhere since you became mayor
- 46:00now we I'll say this, I don't know. I don't know that number
- 46:06off the top of my head, but I'm sure there is There are always
- 46:08are officers who are looking at other opportunities that may best fit their professional career,
- 46:17their personal career. And I never hold that against them. I know
- 46:21that I just sore in six new officers, and I had two officers that
- 46:24had left and had come back and won as recently as two weeks ago.
- 46:28So they left and came back. Yeah, they left and came back.
- 46:30Yeah, they went for other employment and felt, you know again that it
- 46:34didn't work out for them this situation, and said can you come back?
- 46:37And we said, doors open, come on in. We'd love to have
- 46:39you back. This was an officer that was with us for about twelve thirteen
- 46:44years, and it just he thought that this might best fit his new situation
- 46:50at home. It didn't, and he said, okay, it didn't,
- 46:52or can I come back? The answer is yes, absolutely happens. It
- 46:54happens. It happens to every department. And that's okay. Well, how's
- 46:58the search for a police chief? It's going great. I've done interviews over
- 47:01the past couple of weeks, follow up interviews, and I'm still doing those
- 47:07this week as well. And as I said, maybe even the last time
- 47:09I was on the show, Dave, I'm going to take my time.
- 47:10This is a really important decision, and it is amplified when I get calls
- 47:15from you either state troopers or chiefs of police of other large cities throughout the
- 47:22state of West Virginia, or sheriffs who run sheriff's departments throughout the state of
- 47:27West Virginia, saying we support you, we want you to take your time,
- 47:30and of course everybody wants to give their recommendation right of Hey, I
- 47:34know this person or I know this person, and so I appreciate all of
- 47:37those and I always take those calls and happy to as well, because this
- 47:42is important. It's a really important position. It's never been done like this
- 47:46before. The application was extensive, and the questions that this new police chief
- 47:52are unlike any other questions that any other police chief is ever in the history
- 47:57of the city of Charleston have ever had to answer. And I'm real proud
- 48:00of that. But by the way, when you do that interview process,
- 48:04it takes a while. There's no magic wand Okay, I'm gonna pick you.
- 48:07Those days are gone. But Dave Allan Shilling five Aya line brights you
- 48:10apart by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. What's better than

- 48:22is today limited to the first twenty people who sign up. Go to the

- 48:30you do like flowers? Roses? Can you do this stuff like that on
- 48:34Valentine's Day? To do that? You've just been married as long as I
- 48:37have. We'll been married twenty five years in April. I don't even know
- 48:39what twenty five? Is it like silver or is it a papers? What
- 48:45is it? As I said earlier minus thirty two in September, I think
- 48:47it's aluminum. I'm not I'm not sure. Twelve ounce cans golf clubs.
- 48:53I'm kidding. Serious text here said where did the young man get the gun?
- 48:58That's under the investigation. I don't. I don't know at this point.
- 49:00All right, This week, the Westerninia Auto Show comes to the Coliseum
- 49:05Convention Center. I'll have actually Richard Stevens from Steven's Autumn Group is one of
- 49:08the big players behind the bringing this down. One of the big auto dealers
- 49:12you could get a fun talk about. It's such a fun night. Tomorrow
- 49:15we have another big concert announcement over the last couple of weeks. Little Wayne
- 49:20coming to town. It's I called him mister Wayne. It's not Bruce Wayne.
- 49:23And they said, know Amy is actually his name is mister Carter.
- 49:27I'm like, well, he goes by little little little Lil Wayne, not
- 49:30little And I also made that mistake. Just asked my listen to a twenty
- 49:34year old and a twenty two year old. They love to correct their mother.
- 49:36Mom, Sure, Lil Wayne. Yeah. W Interviews Blues Firm Market
- 49:40is also February twenty fourth. And this monster truck. I just talked to
- 49:45a father this morning. He took his four year old to the monster truck
- 49:49show at the Colosseum Convention center of the weekend, and he said, please
- 49:52tell me when the next one is. He he literally said in the hallway
- 49:55home. He would not shut up in the back of the car. I
- 49:58want to go back. I want to go go back. I said,
- 50:00leave it to a four year old. It's monster truck. That's like a
- 50:02raging tiger party for a four year olds. A lot of pictures posted online
- 50:07about that. Of course, we the announcement was made about heart and cheap
- 50:09trick music that you and I recognized, Yeah, coming to the Coliseum,
- 50:15the convention Center. We just came off restaurant week in Charleston, so there's
- 50:21been a whole lot of things going on here. Yeah, there's a whole
- 50:22lot of things going on and it's going to continue. You know. Again,
- 50:25like we said, it's the beginning of the year. You think,
- 50:29okay, we're going to you know, slow roll it in Live on the
- 50:31Levee. We also had applications go on that and off the top of my
- 50:36head, I think, I think what Tina told me was this is going
- 50:39to sound like I'm making this up, but it was like one hundred and
- 50:42sixty bands have already submitted one and sixty Yeah, like you had just a
- 50:49crazy amount of course, you know, or already where do they go to
- 50:52apply? They go to our go to our website. Actually there's a band
- 50:58applications or Live on the Levee Charleston dot com. You can go there.
- 51:01But you know, so banded applications there and you know the regatta, you
- 51:07know, announcements coming soon on. You know who's going to be performing.
- 51:09But we're hot and heavy underway in that and it's it's going to be really
- 51:15cool. One of the dates of regatta we already know. I mean,
- 51:17yeah, it's uh, it's weird because fourth of July falls on a Wednesday.
- 51:22I think, so fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, it's like
- 51:24that Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and then we'll wrap up at
- 51:28like noon on Sunday. So it's gonna be it's gonna be absolutely amazing.
- 51:31I want to want to close with this, Mayor. We we talked about
- 51:36a restaurant We can I talk to a couple of restaurant owners that were very,
- 51:38very pleased with the results. And what about business in downtown Charleston where
- 51:43give me give me a state of the state of the city on business in
- 51:45thirty seconds if you can, well, well, I'll just say this.
- 51:50It's crushing. We're crushing it downtown. And I say we loosely. They
- 51:54are. You know, these are folks who have great passion for what they
- 51:58do. I don't care if it is and not just downtown, I mean
- 52:00West Side and East End folks who have a passion for what they do.
- 52:06Everybody from Tony the Tailor to Morgan at Rock City to Kevin at Black Sheep.
- 52:14These folks are Chef Paul. They put their passion on to benefit us,
- 52:20and so we're thankful for them, all right, may it's always a
- 52:23pleasure to have you on the show. By the way, quick text here
- 52:25says the last time Cheap Trick was here was the eighty nine Sterning World.
