- 0:00Hi, Anthony here in another message.
- 0:02On behalf of diversion. I want to talk about
- 0:05communication and I want to talk about communication for my D EI
- 0:10and be lens. Jason, free base, camp, he.com.
- 0:16Been a big fan for years. One thing that Jason free, put
- 0:20in place 20-plus years ago that falls right in line with the e&i
- 0:25and beat Falls, right in line with creating inclusive cultures
- 0:28and teams Falls, right in line with respecting, everyone's
- 0:32background and communication preferences is he did not
- 0:36mandate every single team member to be a part of a meeting.
- 0:42So your product team holds a meeting your marketing team
- 0:44holds meeting their sales. Teams holds a meeting
- 0:46operations, team holds a meeting your legal.
- 0:48She holds a meeting, your mark, whoever holds a meeting, he
- 0:53realize in a dissected that the majority of the meetings that
- 0:57folks take part in There's usually the meeting organizer
- 1:01that takes, let's call it, 50 percent of the conversation, The
- 1:04Narrative, the focus, the language to dialogue.
- 1:07And then you have your other key stakeholders and or other folks
- 1:11that are just outgoing. Excited to speak maybe or maybe
- 1:17not have great ideas to add that are taking up the rest of the
- 1:20time. They're not afraid to raise
- 1:22their hand and contribute. But they have a large portion of
- 1:26employees that maybe our bit includes a bit that lack a bit
- 1:30of inclusivity that don't feel inclusive, the lack, the ability
- 1:35to be as vocal outgoing a little bit introverted little bit
- 1:40closed off or they're like my wife which is there a gradual
- 1:44thinker, a gradual process real-time questions that are
- 1:48being thrown to them in real time.
- 1:49They don't have time to dissect understand, so it looks like
- 1:53they don't have anything. Nothing meaningful to add.
- 1:55It looks like they're not being engaging.
- 1:57It looks like you're not being productive, but no, it literally
- 2:00just means they don't have their thoughts quite baked out yet.
- 2:03And so he created something that I actually love where he did not
- 2:07mandate every single employee to join the meeting.
- 2:10The meeting organizer, called the meeting in a slack team or a
- 2:14group. And in this case, within some
- 2:16of, the big base camp channels. And there is a voting system
- 2:20where he or she, or they whoever was calling.
- 2:24Meeting would make it very clear that this is the meaning that
- 2:27we're holding for my estimation and perspective.
- 2:30I believe these 10 team members need to be here and here's the
- 2:33reason why anyone else can join but it's not mandated.
- 2:39And if folks do want to join that are gradual, thinkers and
- 2:43processors please, please submit your thoughts, your
- 2:48perspectives. Once you've ingested a lot of
- 2:50the context throughout the meeting, and if you want to
- 2:53bring some thoughts, So active you to the meeting.
- 2:55Here are some information that you can kind of digest and think
- 2:58about a noodle on 24 hours prior to the meeting.
- 3:02I love that. I'll say it again.
- 3:06I love that. I love that from for the
- 3:10following reasons. Makes that person feel
- 3:13incredibly inclusive doesn't. But I also love it because I
- 3:17think there's another Nuance that can be added into that
- 3:19overall initiative. He made sure that from a
- 3:24communication perspective that there were guidelines, including
- 3:28what a chat tool or email can be used and should be used and how
- 3:33they use and give them flexibility to that.
- 3:35Communication got line and chat tool or email to whatever the
- 3:39case is going to be. He also made it a guideline that
- 3:42there's no pressure to respond immediately.
- 3:46Two emails that come through two notifications.
- 3:49That come through, he started baking that Nuance in that
- 3:52perspective. In the literal DNA of the
- 3:56product design, And so what I'm trying to extract from what
- 4:01Jason free did and what I'm trying to share with the D EI
- 4:04and be world and although organizations here that want to
- 4:06bake in D EI, and be into the organization's, creating some
- 4:11flexibility around communication.
- 4:13Creating some flexibility around meetings, creating some
- 4:15flexibility around. How folks will will experience
- 4:19notifications creating some flexibility around how folks
- 4:23digest information and share their thoughts and perspectives.
- 4:26All this, all this needs to be understood.
- 4:28Stood. And I think we're in a world
- 4:31today where a lot of companies are realizing that D EI and B is
- 4:35in a new level. It's a little bit more
- 4:37operational. It's time to really put a lot of
- 4:39energy money and resources. So they're taking big chunks and
- 4:41big bites out of the world and putting some momentum into into
- 4:46the companies. Put this is small little taste,
- 4:50a small little tactic that organizations can do today.
- 4:55So as always, just a few thought, just a few
- 4:58perspectives.
