- 0:00We are born into the world, we grow, we learn, we participate
- 0:05in it, we age, and eventually we die.
- 0:10Many people look at this process without trying to understand any
- 0:13deeper significance. They involve themselves in the
- 0:17process and do not look at what happened before, what caused the
- 0:22existence we participate in, and what happens afterwards.
- 0:28They live within a plot line of events and relationships without
- 0:31any deeper significance and without identifying the parts of
- 0:35the story that are outside the stage we act upon.
- 0:41This imagery is neatly laid out in Shakespeare's play As You
- 0:45Like It Quote. All the world's a stage and all
- 0:50the men and women merely players.
- 0:53They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his
- 0:58time plays many parts, his axe being 7 ages.
- 1:04At first the infant muelling and puking in the nurse's arms, and
- 1:09then the whining schoolboy with his satchel and shining morning
- 1:15face creeping like snail, unwilling to school.
- 1:20And then the lover sighing like furnace with a woeful ballad
- 1:26made to his mistress eyebrow. Then a soldier full of strange
- 1:31oaths and bearded like the pard, jealous in honour, sudden and
- 1:37quick in quarrel, seeking the bubble reputation even in the
- 1:42cannon's mouth. And then the justice in fair
- 1:46round belly with good Cape unlined, with eyes severe and
- 1:51beard of formal cut, full of wise saws and modern instances.
- 1:57And so he plays his part. The 6th age shifts into the lean
- 2:02and slippered pantaloon, with spectacles on nose and pouch on
- 2:07side. His youthful hose well saved a
- 2:10world too wide for his shrunk Shank, and his big manly voice
- 2:17turning again toward childish trouble.
- 2:21Pipes and whistles in his sound. Last seen of all that ends this
- 2:28strange eventful history is second childishness and mere
- 2:33oblivion. Sand's teeth, sand's eyes,
- 2:37sand's taste, sands, everything. End Quote.
- 2:44When we look at the vast and highly detailed machinery of the
- 2:48Universal Creation, it becomes obvious that all of this
- 2:52structure, all of this complexity, all of this genetic
- 2:57coding, cellular structure, the electromagnetic spectrum, all of
- 3:01these interrelationships cannot be and are not simply random,
- 3:07meaningless events that occurred without a preceding cause and
- 3:12without a follow on effect. What we are missing in this very
- 3:17limited view is not the picture in front of us, but rather an
- 3:22understanding of how our lives fit into the patterns and
- 3:26developments in the universe. Sages and rishis, philosophers
- 3:33and scientists, seers and Mystics, visionaries and those
- 3:38guided by mental reason, all have through the ages explored
- 3:43the question of the significance of our lives, where we come from
- 3:47and why and where we are going to, and how.
- 3:53Sri Aurobindo explored these issues at great depth and
- 3:56concluded that our world is the setting for an evolution of
- 3:59consciousness. That our current lifetime is
- 4:02just one in a series of lifetimes that allow us to carry
- 4:07not an individual personality forward, but rather the essence
- 4:12of the experience distilled in a soul entity, which he called the
- 4:17psychic being that utilizes the process as one of development
- 4:21and maturation to eventually express the Divine consciously
- 4:27through the body, life, mind complex that we inhabit during
- 4:31our lifetime. While he explored these
- 4:34questions at great length in rebirth and karma as well as in
- 4:38the Life Divine, he encapsulates this view in his visionary
- 4:43poetic expression. Sri Robindo writes in his epic
- 4:47poem Savitri, a legend and a symbol in Book 2, Canto 14
- 4:54quote. A person persistent through the
- 4:58lapse of worlds, although the same forever in many shapes, by
- 5:03the outward mind unrecognizable, assuming names unknown, in
- 5:08unknown climes, Imprints through time upon the earth's worn page,
- 5:13a growing figure of its secret self, and learns by experience
- 5:18what the spirit knew till it can see its truth alive and God.
