- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Lucas, I'm in the mood for something fruity today. Lucas: Great topic. Let's learn two common fruits: orange and banana. In Amharic, orange is ብርቱካን. Luna: ብርቱካን. That's a mouthful. Lucas: Break it down: ብር-ቱ-ካን. Try it. Luna: ብርቱካን. ብርቱካን. Got it. Lucas: Perfect. And banana is ሙዝ. Simple, short. Luna: ሙዝ. Like 'mooz'. I like that. Lucas: Now let's use them. To say 'I want an orange', you say ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. That's 'orange' plus 'I want'. Lucas: Exactly. Now you try. Luna: ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Okay, my turn. What if I want to say 'I prefer banana'? Lucas: Great question. That would be ሙዝ እመርጣለሁ. The word እመርጣለሁ means 'I prefer'. Luna: ሙዝ እመርጣለሁ. So 'banana I prefer'. Lucas: Right. Let's imagine you're at a market. You see oranges and bananas. You say ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. But what if they ask which one? I'd say ሙዝ እመርጣለሁ. Lucas: There you go. Now, a quick sidebar. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Amharic, and today's episode was worth a coffee to you, that's the link — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It keeps us ad-free and we really appreciate it. Luna: Yeah, every little bit helps. Okay, back to fruit. Let's practice a mini dialog. Lucas: Sure. I'll be the vendor. You say you want an orange. Go. Luna: ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: And I say, 'Here is the orange.' That would be እነሆ ብርቱካን. Luna: እነሆ ብርቱካን. Nice. So now I can say I want an orange and I can say I prefer banana. Lucas: You got it. Let's do one more round. Repeat after me: ብርቱካን. Luna: ብርቱካን. Lucas: ሙዝ. Luna: ሙዝ. Lucas: ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: ሙዝ እመርጣለሁ. Luna: ሙዝ እመርጣለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. Now you can go to any fruit stand and ask for what you like. Luna: I feel ready. Thanks Lucas. And thanks to our listeners. Practice these and we'll see you next time. Lucas: Keep practicing with Fexingo. Bye for now.
