- 0:00A young person, around 20 years of age reported an experience he
- 0:05had while visiting a beer hall in Munich, Germany with some
- 0:09friends and acquaintances. As could be expected, there was
- 0:14a lot of noise, clinking of glasses, singing, laughing,
- 0:17storytelling among his friends as well as generally in the pub.
- 0:23He suddenly felt totally isolated, alone in the crowd, as
- 0:28he phrased it. He felt out of place, like he
- 0:32could not understand what he was doing there.
- 0:35It brought him to a state of disorientation about what his
- 0:39entire life was about. He indicated he took up a pen
- 0:44and a napkin and wrote a poem about his experience.
- 0:49What he reported is actually not an unusual experience.
- 0:54Many people have reported on feeling alone in the crowd.
- 0:58They have a sense of isolation. The mood is a depressive one.
- 1:03In some cases, it causes the individual to feel such a deep
- 1:07sense of isolation that they feel like they simply don't fit
- 1:11in. In other cases, the experience
- 1:15causes the individual to look inside to determine what the
- 1:18cause and the solution to this feeling might be.
- 1:23In such a case, it can be the first step towards the deeper
- 1:28seeking that somehow recognizes that the enjoyments and
- 1:32pleasures of the outer existence hold little relevance for them
- 1:36and thus they need to undertake the search for the soul.
- 1:43An early stage of this search leads to what is called
- 1:46introspection. This is an internal review of
- 1:491's thoughts and feelings to try to sort out some sense of what
- 1:54it is all about and what they should do about it.
- 1:57Introspection does not separate the observer from the object of
- 2:01observation, but looks on what is being seen as oneself.
- 2:08There are people who are naturally indrawn within
- 2:11themselves, who find comfort in quiet times, readings, communing
- 2:17with nature, gardening rather than simply running after
- 2:21external stimulation of crowds, events and activities.
- 2:27These people are called introverts, as opposed to the
- 2:30extroverts who tend to thrive in the active, outgoing
- 2:34relationships of life. These individuals tend to
- 2:38identify with the ego personality Nexus and do not
- 2:42experience a separation from their being.
- 2:46They simply feel more at ease and secure, with a less outward
- 2:51orientation. The experience of the witness
- 2:55consciousness described in the yogic texts is not the same as
- 2:59any of these other experiences. The witness consciousness is
- 3:04described as the separation of the Purusha, the witness from
- 3:09Prakriti, the active nature. The active nature does not just
- 3:15relate to external actions, events or circumstances, but
- 3:19includes the individual himself. There is a stage where
- 3:24everything, including the thoughts, feelings, perceptions,
- 3:29reactions of the individual's own being, is seen as something
- 3:33external to himself. And in some cases it may seem
- 3:38like the one is observing a film rather than participating in the
- 3:43life. This is a key difference between
- 3:47introspection, where the individual still feels the
- 3:50thoughts, responses, etcetera to be himself, and the witness
- 3:55consciousness, where they are experienced as other than
- 3:59himself. The standpoint shift from
- 4:02participation to pure disinterested observation is an
- 4:07essential one. Shvia Robindo observes quote.
- 4:13There is a stage in the sadhna in which the inner being begins
- 4:16to awake often. The 1st result is the condition
- 4:20made-up of the following elements. 1A Sort of witness
- 4:25attitude in which the inner consciousness looks at all that
- 4:28happens as a spectator or observer, observing things but
- 4:32taking no active interest or pleasure in them. 2A State of
- 4:37neutral equanimity, in which there is neither joy nor sorrow,
- 4:43only quietude, and 3A sense of being something separate from
- 4:48all that happens, observing it but not part of it.
