- 0:00SPEAKER_00: The last time you jumped in with an answer,
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: only to realize later that you didn't really fully understand the question,
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: was embarrassing, wasn't it?
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Well, I've been there.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: In meetings,
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I've spoken too soon,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: offering solutions I thought were brilliant,
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: until I realized I was solving the wrong problem.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Today, we're in Proverbs 18, verse 13, because it's the 18th day of the month.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: where a proverb a day keeps stinking thinking at bay.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I'm Ernie Lansford, and I'm your host.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Each day,
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: We open the book of Proverbs that matches the day of the month
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: and ask what it's saying to us as marketplace leaders,
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: coworkers, customer success masters, and occasionally influencers of culture.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So grab your coffee or soda or whatever it is you drink.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I just love coffee and I usually have a cup sitting right here next to the microphone.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So let's reflect on today's proverb.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: It's chapter 18, verse 13 from the ESV, the English Standard Version.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Quote, if one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame, end quote.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I got to tell you, this proverb pulls no punches.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Answering before listening is foolish.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Been there, done that.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And frankly, it leads to shame.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: There's no strategy in that.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: I've been there.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And let's be frank.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Our egos love to jump in.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: We aim to be perceived as intelligent, decisive, insightful, brilliant.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: But insight doesn't come from interrupting.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: It comes from listening.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I recall requesting an appointment.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: With the founder and chairperson and the CEO of a highly respected business in
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: the musical instrument products and pro audio industry.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Frankly, I was granted the opportunity to meet with them because of our previous relationships.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, I did most of the talking with very little listening.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And no probing to understand.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I was a babbling fool.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And looking back on that incident,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I believe we could have had a mutual understanding to work together,
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: but I blew it because I was proving I was a talker versus a listener,
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: which implies an unwillingness to work as a team member.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: One of the most powerful lessons in listening before jumping in comes from John 8,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: the story of a woman caught in adultery.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Now, the Pharisees and the crowd, they were ready to condemn, but Jesus slowed everything down.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Quote, Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: End quote.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I guess that's where the old saying is,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: he who lives in glass houses shouldn't be throwing rocks.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: And one by one, they walked away.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: The older men first, because wisdom and humility often walk in hand.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: J.G.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Bennett once said, quote,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: While we see others mainly in the light of their actions.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And that's where misunderstanding begins.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: We excuse ourselves because we meant well.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: However, we often judge others for what they have done.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Humility bridges the gap.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Ego, edging God out, widens it.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: You know, we often discuss, especially in corporate KPI, key performance indicators.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: But I want to challenge you to think of KPIs a little different, a little deeper.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: What if it were called a key praise indicator?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Or a kindest practice intentionality, intentionally indicator?
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Or keeping people inspired indicator?
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Track how often you listen without interrupting and praise without prompting
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: and pause before reacting.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: That's a KPI that builds relationships and honors God.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Today's customer success code, humility, seeks to understand before speaking.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Ego speaks before listening.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Here are four action points to put Proverbs 18, 13 into practice today.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Action point number one, practice active listening.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: In your next conversation, refrain from interrupting.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Instead, summarize what you heard before responding.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Action point number two, pause before you react.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: When you feel that rush to correct or criticize yourself, Take a breath.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Ask a clarifying question instead.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Action point number three is give others the benefit of the doubt.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: When someone messes up, assume there's more to the story.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Just ask a simple question.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: What was your thinking behind that decision?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Action point number four, make humility your KPI.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Track how often you listen well.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: And praise freely and respond thoughtfully.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: That could be your new metric.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: It truly could.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Lord, help us slow down, me in particular.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Give us hearts that listen and ears that don't rush to speak.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Teach us, teach me, to lead with humility and respond with wisdom.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: May our work reflect your character, not our ego, in everything that we do.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name, amen.
