Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to Let's Talk Trail Running.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: This is your host Rob Prosser and this is the show where we preview upcoming races
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: that are taking place on Fantasy Free Trail and the goal of this podcast is
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: to grow fans of trail running.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Robrunsround, Robrunsround.com
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: We're going to preview a Skyrunning World Series race.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: They're not as good of storytellers as Golden Trail World Series
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: and I would say even UTM be a similar ultra to some extent.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So my mind,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: at least in the North American scene,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I live in America,
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: it feels like they're undercovered and kind of underappreciated for how cool of
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: an aesthetic the race courses are.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So today,
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: like I said,
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: we're going to preview the next stop in the Skyrunning World Series Circuit,
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Gorbia-Suzian.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I might be butchering that.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I apologize if I am.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I've never really heard it said.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: But that's the race we're going to preview today.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Before that, it's been a couple of weeks since I talked to you guys.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Haven't done any.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I've had many preview episodes since UTMB,
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: getting out all three of the majors for UTMB, OCC, CCC, and UTMB.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: So it's been a while since I've talked to you guys,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: missed a few races in between there,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: and unfortunately,
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I was a little bit I was really excited about Trofeo Kima this year,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: but it was just so close to UTMB and just didn't quite have the field
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: that it usually has.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So hopefully when it happens again in two years, they separate that a little bit more.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: But I just didn't feel like the field was deep enough that I was excited enough
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: to talk about it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And same thing with Matterhorn old tracks as well.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: All right, so things I want to talk about before we go into the race preview.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: So talking about UTMB previews and how those kind of went.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I have a confession.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I changed my picks for UTMB after I recorded my podcast.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: The stats that Liam Tryon,
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: 8 Station Fireball,
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: provided about how dismal the results for a Western UTMB double are.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So I apologize.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: I got excited about Vincent Bouillard.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: But basically,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: if there's one lesson I learned every year at UTMB,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: it's that you really need to be skeptical and even doubtful
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: about anyone stumbling back from Western.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It can kind of be okay at CCC or OCC, but it's kind of the exception, not the rule.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: You kind of want to be worried.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I'm worried about people that ran a really fast Western at UTMB races.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So that's the lesson I learned this year,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: and I learn it every year, honestly, when I'm picking UTMB.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So if you hear me next year making picks for people that did Western,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: be skeptical and relearn that lesson and learn from my mistakes, not my advice.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: So other things that have happened since...
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: It's been almost a month since we talked.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I'm recording this September 23rd.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And last preview I think I got out was almost exactly a month ago.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So a lot has happened in the trail space since then.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Most notably and tragically,
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: we've had some losses of some really,
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: really amazing athletes,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: both from the Skyrunning World Series circuit And just from the trail
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: and ultra running circuit in general,
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: of course,
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about Kylie McChrystal getting lost on Matterhorn
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: and presumably falling off.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: They still haven't been able to find her body as of about three weeks after it happened today.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And then most recently,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: just this past week,
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: maybe two or three days ago,
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: checked my Instagram and unfortunately saw a tragic post from Miguel Benitez,
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: a friend and I believe partner of Ida Emily Robesam.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Really, really amazing,
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: talented young Norwegian runner with top fives at Marathon de Mont Blanc, Worlds,
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: OCC two years in a row,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: and just really one of the most consistent and exciting races on the scene.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Really tragic, only 30 years old.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Fell in Ramsdal-Legen while running with Miguel,
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: and I believe he saw it and also was able to get back down to where she fell to.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So just really a tragic and kind of mortal reminder that I really love this sport
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: because I love spending time in the mountains and doing things that involve kind
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: of scrambling or lower class climbing.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: But really just a reminder that there are serious consequences and
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: that we just all need to be safe out there and tell the people that we love
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: that we love them.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just really tragic.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I was really, really, really sad.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: It saddened me and still saddens me,
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: you know, two or three days after learning every time I think about it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: So that's, yeah, it's just really unfortunate.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Other housekeeping notes.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So I did Run Rabbit Run,
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: both the 100 mile event for the Hares with a $20,000 prize purse to first place,
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: I want to say eight and a half to second and like seven to third or 6,000 to third
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: with some performance bonuses.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And I myself actually raced for the first time since my DNF at number summer.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: I raced Run Rabbit Run, the 50 miler.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I wanted to do the 100,
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: but I just knew I wasn't going to be able to get the training and that I wanted
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: to getting married in early August.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: So I signed up for the 50-miler.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Really, really awesome day out there.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: 50-miler doesn't go off until Saturday morning.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: The elites for the 100-miler go off on Friday at 1 p.m. in the heat of the day.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Gnarly, gnarly weather.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: I feel like every year Run Rabbit Run the 100 has some thunderstorms and rain,
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: and you really have to manage your race well and be smart about staying warm
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: because it does get cold up there.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I've never been to Steamboat Springs before this weekend.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: It felt more like the Pacific Northwest than it did in any of the places
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: in Colorado I've been to.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: It rained pretty much consistently on and off probably for almost half of
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: the I started the race for the 100 milers.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And then for me, I started the race at 6 a.m. in the dark.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: We ran up to the top of the ski hill.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: We were getting rained on the whole time.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And then we kind of ran into a thunderstorm.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Visibility went down to like 20 or 30 feet.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: It was one of the gnarly Robrunsround, Robrunsround.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: More or less.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Super muddy, peanut buttery.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I fell at like mile 10 and cramped.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: But anyways, it ended up being a really, really good race.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: It was some redemption after my DNF, my first ever DNF at Never Summer 100K.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I was able to sneak up from sixth place at the halfway point So I went
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: to second place by the finish.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I kind of used the net downhill back half to my advantage and
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: then basically started making moves and didn't start passing people until mile 38,
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: I passed third and fourth.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And then mile 44,
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: or mile 40,
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: I caught up to second,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: and then we ran together through about 44,
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: and then I made my move on the last downhill.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: So fun race, not super competitive, but I mean, I was still pretty excited about my podium stop.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Finished in about eight hours and 26 minutes.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: I figured on a good day, I'd be about 8.15, and then between 8.15 and 8.30.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Everyone went off course early, so that probably cost us about five minutes.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: But given the conditions, I was really, really stoked.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: On the flip side, the 100-mile course, awesome results.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Friend, Ryan Sullivan, Got a winning course record.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Friend, Hannah, all good.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Got a winning course record.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: The last 14 miles of the 100-mile course is the first 14 miles of the 50-mile course.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: So we got to see all the 50-milers.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Got to see Ryan Sullivan come into his course record right at the start of our race
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: because it was the first three minutes.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Then we also got to see the other 100-milers coming down and finish.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: About four miles into my race or five miles into the climb,
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I saw Hannah and got to cheer her on.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: It was awesome.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: They looked like they had been there a lot,
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: but it was a really, really cool thing to see and a really, really cool event.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I think Ryan got $21,000 because he got the win.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: The first to the top of the climb,
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: there might have been a course record bonus,
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: and then Hannah got $22,500 because she won the team competition as well.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: So that is the housekeeping items for the day.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: A little bit longer than usual,
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: but also just haven't talked to you guys in a while and kind of some sad news,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: some exciting news.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, and just kind of seeing what's going on.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: It's, it's weird.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: It feels like with the end of UTMB, it's kind of like the end of, of summer.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Um, we did have a golden trail series race last week that I just didn't have time
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: to cover with my upcoming race.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then we also had tour de giant, um,
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: which I was excited and was following closely with,
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: uh, Katarina Hartmuth course record.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And then I think on the men's side, the Chinese male, I want it also had a course record.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Um, And then Trofeo Nisego and Vertical Nisego didn't get episodes out about those,
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: but was excited for those as well.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: So let's actually start talking about Gorbia Susien Sky Race.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: It's in the Basque country of Spain.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: It is a 32-kilometer race with 2,400 meters of climbing and descending,
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: or in Freedom Units,
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: 19.6 miles with approximately 7,400 feet of climbing and descending.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Like I said, it's in the heart of Basque country, Spain.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: It's about It
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: starts in the town of Zia Nuri and goes up Gorbia Peak.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: It begins the race with an 8.6 mile climb that includes about 5,700 feet
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: of climbing, but there's also a little bit of two rolling descents in there as well.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: The Strava segment for that climb, that 8.6 miles and 5,700 feet, is on the men's side.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Alain Santamario Blanco has the Crown for that in about an hour and a half, hour 29.32.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: And then on the women's side,
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: the fastest time for that section is Nayar Irgoyan has a female crown and 152.49.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: So Gorbia is a peak.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: It's the high point of the race and it's about 4,800.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: After that,
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: basically the last seven miles of the race are almost entirely downhill,
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: where runners lose about 3,800 feet of elevation back down to the town of Zeonari.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: The terrain is very Zagama-like.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: I included a video on the show notes from YouTube of one of
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: the Skyrunning World Series recaps to kind of show you what it looks like.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Very picturesque course, downloads, forest paths, stone huts and stone shepherd building.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And then once you get above,
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: and lots of tree cover,
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: and then once you get above tree line, opens up to rocky and grassy terrain.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: But seemingly it doesn't have,
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: or at least the last three editions from what I can tell,
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: they don't have the bad spring weather that Sagama is kind of subject to
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: with either it being really, really rainy or really, really hot.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: It seems like it's Been pretty temperate and well run the past couple years.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Finish, that long downhill finish definitely plays
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: to technical descender strengths like Mano Marias and Sara Alonso.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: From what I can tell, I only saw times from the last three years or four years.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I want to say 2022.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: The fastest man's time that I found was Alon Santamaria Blanco.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: In 2023, he won the race in 2.57.08.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And then, and so I included that Strava file in the show notes.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: And then I also included the show notes,
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: the Strava file for Clementine Joffrey, who won in 2023 in 334.24.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Although in 2024, Lide Aristarazu, Basker Runner, ran it in 334.16.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: So the fastest women's time I'm seeing is around 334.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Fastest men's time is just shy of three hours and about 257.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So that's what I expect the winners to kind of come through.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: All right, so that covers all the show notes.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Let's jump into the fields.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: On the men's side,
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: we've got some of the Skyrunning World Series usual suspects,
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: a lot of good Spaniards.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: I expect to see lots of Spaniards on the top 10 on both sides.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Basque Country definitely shows out for the races.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And so let's start off with the first male on the list, Manu Marias.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Spanish trail runner for New Balance who lives in the Leon region of Spain.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Definitely one of the best technical downhillers in the game.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Anyone that listens to this podcast consistently knows that we,
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: or specifically me, I'm a big Manu Marias fan.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: He started off his season really,
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: really impressively with two wins at Skyrunning World Series races,
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: significantly over Fred Tranchand in Calamaro and Encantilados del Norte.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: So that's pretty impressive.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, Fred's coming off of Eurochamp this year, OCC Champ, and then last year, World Champ.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: So Manus followed up those double wins at those two skyrunning races with
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: a fourth place at his beloved Zagama.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: I think it was his 10th year of racing it, if I'm not mistaken.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Since then, Menuh has had good races by all means, but not quite to that early season form.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: He hasn't had another win yet.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: He missed at the Eurochamps in the uphill and the up-down races, didn't have good days there.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: And then since Euros, he's raced to a third place at Marathon.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: He ran it in 2023 to a fourth place finish in two hours and 59 minutes.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And he also ran it in 2024 to a second place in three hours and one minute.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Manu took last year's race off because he focused on Worlds,
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: but he's got to be a favorite for the podium, if not the overall win.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Next athlete, talk about Alon Santamario Banco.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: From what I can tell, the course record holder in that 2.57 finish time when he won in 2023.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: He is a Spanish runner for X-Bionic,
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: and he's been steadily rising through the ranks the past couple years,
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: but he's really had his breakout season this year.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Results for Alon Santamario Blanco include,
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: most recently,
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: a fifth place at OCC,
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: where he unfortunately kind of got that three-minute penalty or whatever for cutting
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: the course.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: He's got an 11th at Zagama this year, or excuse me, at Sears and Alden.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: This year in a Blazing Fast 234.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Eighth at Golden Trail Series, Pete's Alpine.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Fourth at the European Championships, 50K course.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And then a third at the Contalados del Norte, just to name a few of his many good results.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: There's even more races in there, but those are some of the highlights.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Alon has won here before in 2023 in what appears to be the fastest time, like I said.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: So he's definitely a favorite to win,
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: both with his season that he's raced so far and his knowledge of the course.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Next athlete is Italian Alex Oberbacher,
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: runner for La Sportiva, who I think is a ski mountaineering specialist.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: So he's going to be one of the best climbers in this game.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: He lives in Italy, but his posts are in German.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: So I think he's kind of in like that T-roll or Northern Italy, German-speaking portion of Italy.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: He is coming off a win at a weather-shortened Matterhorn old tracks race.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: And then he DNF at OCC, which I don't even know how he raced.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: It was only six days after Matterhorn.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: He's definitely one of the best climbers in this field,
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: along with Louis Puigvert, the young Spaniard, who we'll talk about in a little bit.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I would not be surprised to see Alex Oberbacher first at the top of Corbia Peak,
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: or he's going to be up there with probably Alon Santamario Blanco.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Other good results for Alex this year include a second place
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: at Sky Race Day Mathesine, seventh at LiveR8050K.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: My only reservations with Oberbacher is that he can be a little bit less consistent
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: the longer the race gets, and this is right on the border of a longer race for him.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: He did race here last year to a 15th place finish.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: So he tends to be really good in that two to two and a half hour range,
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: but sometimes on the longer races,
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's nutrition or what, he just kind of falls off.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Next athlete,
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Loic Robert,
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: French runner,
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: whose most impressive results this year include a 7th at Marathon of Mont Blanc,
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: 17th at Zagama, and 5th at Contalados del Norte.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Loic has raced to an 18th place finish here in 2024.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: He definitely has the skills and speed to crack the top 10,
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: but can be a bit up and down as a racer.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Next athlete on the men's side, somebody home very excited about their future, Luis Puigvert.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: He's a young Spaniard runner.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: He's part of the Solomon Next Gen program.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: And he's coming off a win at the Skyrunning World Champs VK at Sky Gomera, I believe it was.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And he's probably,
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: like I said, one of the most exciting young prospects out there, if you ask me.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: One of the best uphill runners in this field,
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: like I said, up there with Alex Oberbacher, if not the best.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: He doesn't often race quite this long,
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: so it's going to be a little bit of a jump up in distance for him.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: His results this year include a 10th at Golden Trail Series Pizza Alpine,
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: 2nd at Marathon de Mont Blanc 23K, and 7th at Acantilados Del Norte.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: This will be his longest race, from what I can tell, time on feet-wise.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: If they're finishing around 3 hours,
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: I think his longest race previously was around 2 hours and 40 minutes.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Next athlete, another young up-and-comer, Marcos Villa-Muera, a Spanish athlete for Scarpa.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: And I think he was racing on the 23U circuit last year within the past two years
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: at Skyrunning World Series.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: He is a regular in Skyrunning World Series races.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: His results this year include 11th at ETC, 4th at the Labaredo 50K.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Ninth at Gorges Dutarn, and fourth at Calamaro Sky Race.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: So Marcos has raced here before last year.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: He got a second place finish in 3.02.37, which is always a promising
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: finish for him.
- 17:54All right.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And...
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Update, I just refreshed the page and actually Luis Puigvert is a scratch.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, he won't be racing, but I'm not surprised with him racing the VK so recently.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: All right,
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: next athlete on the docket,
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Lucien Mervion,
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: French runner for Rossignol,
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: having a great season of racing this year,
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: including a second most recently at the MAGA Sky Marathon behind Willem Bofele.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: He has a win at Verbier Marathon, fifth at Gorges du Tarn, and fifth at Sky Race de Mathesine.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Lucien has not raced here before,
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: from what I can tell,
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: but he is consistent and does very well at races longer than this,
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: so I think he should have no problem ending up scoring points
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: and finishing somewhere in that 3-7 range here.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Next athlete, Spanish runner for Scott, Nico Molina.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Results this year include 4th at Matterhorn Ultrax,
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: 14th at Golden Trail Series Pete's Alpine,
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: 27th at Zagama, and 6th at Calamaro Sky Race.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Niko Molina has not raced here before, but does while it races in this three-hour time range.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: All right,
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: next men's athlete I want to talk about,
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Aitor Azuria, seemingly a bass runner from what I can tell.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Definitely one of those Basque sleeper picks that you should be really strongly considering.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: He did win this race last year in 3.01.16, a very speedy time.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: This year he had a breakout Zagama race,
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: finishing in ninth place and improving from his 40th place finish last year.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: He has many races here, and he's raced to a 6th place finish at Gorbia Susien in 2022 and 2024.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And like I said,
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: he's a sleeper pick and someone who I'm confident is going to use
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: that home field advantage to end up in the top 10 somewhere.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: So Aitor Azuria, definitely keep an eye out for him and that leaderboard.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Alright, last two men's athletes I want to talk about.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Finlay Grant, young Scottish runner for Scarpa, putting together a consistent season.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: He's raced to a 7th place at Colomar Sky Race, 3rd at Gorgeous Dutarn, and 4th at UTC.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: His two misses this year,
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: however,
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: have been 29th at MAGA Sky Marathon most recently,
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: and then 19th at Sky Race to Mathazine.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: I think Finlay Grant is a really consistent runner and a safe pick
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: to end up somewhere in this field's top 10.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Last man's runner I want to talk about is Mattia Bertoncini,
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Italian runner for New Balance
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: who has put up some really impressive results this year,
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: including second place at Trophy Akima, most recently the week before UTMB.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: He got a third place at Sky Race to Mathesines early in the season,
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: and he's also had a sixth At UTMB-Volzerweig in the middle of the season there.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Mattia has not raced here from what I can tell,
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: and he does also have two DNFs this year,
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: one at MAGA Sky Marathon and one at the Marathon de Mont Blanc.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: So that's the only thing that has me a little bit nervous picking him,
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: but I can definitely see him in the top five here.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: All right,
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: so men's picks,
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: five through one,
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: all the usual caveats,
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: I'm probably going to change them before I finally submit them.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: And then also I'm going to give you other people who I'm considering subbing in
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: or swapping positions.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to start with the fifth place men.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go Marcos Villamora.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: I like the fact that he finished second place here in a very fast time last year and
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: that he is a pretty consistent racer.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: So go Marcos Villamora for fifth.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Fourth place, I'm going to go Aitor Azuria, the bass runner we talked about.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: It feels like he's got home field advantage, feels like he knows how to run this race.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: It feels like he's going to be somewhere in that top 10 for sure.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Third place,
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go Lucien Murmion,
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Rossignol athlete, French guy, having a really up and coming season.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: I've been really impressed with his races so far in
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: the sky running World Series circuit,
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: so I think he's definitely locked for somewhere there.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Second place we're going to go Manu Marias.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: And first place we're going to go a repeat champion, Alon Santa Maria Blanco.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: People who I'm considering subbing in, I'm really up on the fence.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: I've changed out that fifth place, Marcos Villamuera.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: I've had Alex Oberbacher, who I definitely think could go top five here.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: I've also had Nico Molina, Finlay Grant, and Mattia Bertoncini.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: I think any of those guys are strong picks, but it kind of just depends.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: I'm a little bit nervous.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Alex Oberbacher can be a little bit Less consistent on these longer races.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Bertoncini is better at the longer races, but does have two DNFs this year.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And then Finlay Grant, his misses were in longer races this year.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: So I kind of feel like Marcos or Nico are probably the safest picks.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: On the women's side,
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: definitely there's a hands-down favorite with Sara Alonzo coming in and being
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: the biggest name in this field.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: She is coming off of a third-place finish at OCC,
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: just behind Lauren Sean Gregory and Naomi Lang.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I think she was about a minute and nine seconds back, if I remember correctly.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Sara Alonzo, Spanish runner for A6.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Seemingly hands-down favorite, like I said.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: And she hasn't missed in any of her Skyrunning World Series that she's towed
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: the line of this year with wins at Calamaro Skyrace and a Contalados Del Norte
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: to start her season.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: She also just recently won a 20K UTMB race in Turkey,
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: which she raced only two weeks before this, and that was between now and OCC.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: So even though she's only like a month out from OCC,
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: which was a six-hour race, she already has a two-hour race in there as well.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: my only hesitation for Sara Alonzo that makes me think that there's a small chance
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: that she doesn't win is,
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: we're only four to five weeks out from a super long and taxing effort at OCC
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: where she basically ran,
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: you know, from the gun and was up front in a lot of the race.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: And then, like I said, she's already run another race only two weeks after that.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: It still seems like Sara Alonso is class enough to win here with a bit of fatigue, though.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And the turkey race wasn't very competitive.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: And then on top of that,
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Sara is going to be racing with a lot of emotion following the death of her friend
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: and teammate, Ida Amelie Robcham.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: So got to think it's an emotional one for her.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: She's definitely going to have her friend in mind.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: And I still think she's class enough that even if she's a little bit compromised, she wins here.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Next athlete,
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Denisa Dragomir,
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Romanian athlete for Merrill,
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: a Skyrunning World Series regular,
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: and I think she's a previous champion of the Skyrunning World Series.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: She did have a bounce-back race a few weeks ago,
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: winning the shortened course at Matterhorn Ultrax.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Before that,
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: she raced to a 7th place at Valderan 50K,
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: the Euro major, and 10th at Gorges Dutaran.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: I think she's been dealing with a bit of an injury this season,
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: like some kind of edema on her footwork.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: She hasn't raced as much as usual or had the consistency that she had
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: in last year's Skyrim World Series season where she was basically a lock for
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: the podium every time.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: On a good day, Denisa is definitely on the podium in this field.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Next athlete to talk about, Ava De La Fosse.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: French runner who first caught my eye this year
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: with her very impressive second place at Sky Race in Mathesine,
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: only behind Malinosa.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And then she's followed it up with a couple other good second places
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: at Sky Race Gorgeous Du Tarn and second most recently at MAGA Sky Marathon only
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: a few weeks ago.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: Ava mostly races in France and has not raced at Gorbia Susien from what I can tell,
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: but she definitely shines in the longer races.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: And similarly to Sarah,
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: she will have a bit of fatigue in her legs after having run a five-hour
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: and 38-minute race at Maga Sky Marathon only three weeks before the race,
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: before this race.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: So somebody to look out for,
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: really consistent,
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: mostly races, French races, but does like this longer, grindier stuff.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Next athlete is Patricia Pineda,
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Spanish runner for La Sportiva,
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: most recently raced to a second place at Laboreto 50K,
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: where she was only three minutes behind Malinosa.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: She also has a 10th at Sky Race in Mathesine,
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: 5th at Calamara Sky Race, and 2nd at Acantilados del Norte this year.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: But it's curious that she hasn't raced in almost three months,
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: so I'm hoping that's not because she's been injured.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I checked her Instagram.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: She definitely made mentions about biking and biking more,
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: but she didn't She hasn't really explicitly outlined an injury,
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: and she hasn't posted a lot since her second place at Lavarado.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: So definitely somebody to look out for.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: With that being said,
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: when she toes the line,
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: she doesn't DNF, hasn't had a DNF since 2024, from what I can tell.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: So it seems like if she's going to be starting this race,
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: that she thinks she's fit enough to finish and do well.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Next athlete to talk about is Ondaatje.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Arginzoni is presumably a Basque runner with an impressive name like that.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: She hasn't raced much this year, but does have a very good track record of racing here.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: So in 2022, she got second place.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: She was fourth in 2023 and third as recently as 2024.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: So she knows the course super well,
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: runs well here,
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: and will likely be a local sleeper pick like Aitor Azuria on the men's side.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's only got one race this year,
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: and it's a win at a
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: race in, it looks like, Basque Country in Spain as well.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: All right,
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: next athlete I want to talk about is Elise Bosseron,
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: a French runner for New Balance coming off a fourth
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: at Matterhorn Ultrax most recently.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Alice's other results include a 33rd at Sierra Zanal,
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: 7th at Marathon of Mont Blanc 23K, 3rd at Gorgeous Dutarn,
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: She hasn't raced here before,
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: from what I can tell,
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: but is definitely a consistent racer and a strong pick for this field.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: She has even faster races.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Last year, she was a 316 finisher, so 17th place finisher at Sierra's and all.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: So she's definitely got tons of leg speed and can have a good race out here.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Next female athlete,
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: I want to talk about Natalie Beadle,
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: UK runner for Arc'teryx coming off a win at the MAGA Sky Marathon most recently
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: over Ava De La Fosse and Alina Karen Filoska who we'll talk about.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Natalie Beadle also raced Matterhorn Ultrax to a fifth place finish.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: And Beast of Big Creek in the U.S. to a second-place finish.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Natalie has really improved a ton this year,
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: and I could see her going top five here,
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: but I'm a bit worried about her also having MAGA Sky Marathon stolen her legs.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: And also,
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: this is a little bit shorter and speedier,
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: sharper race,
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: and it seems like she's a little bit better or has more of an advantage in some of
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: the longer, grindier races.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Next athlete, Isabel Calero, Spanish runner for HOMA, coming off 11th at Matterhorn Ultrax.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: She also raced to a third place at Corsa Tomir and a ninth at a Contalados del Norte this year.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: I don't really have much insight on her,
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: but I expect to see a good number of Spanish females in the top 10,
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: and I do think she's one that could end up there.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Next female athlete,
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Elena Karen Filowska,
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: runner from North Macedonia with some strong results in longer races this year.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: She's coming off a fifth at MAGA Sky Marathon,
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: eighth at Trophy Akima, and a second at Penang Sky Race.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: I think Elena is a safe pick who's going to finish and be somewhere in the top 10.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I see her in the top 5,
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: but I think that she'll likely be somewhere in that 6-10 spot
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: and she doesn't really DNF a lot of races and does a lot of races that are longer
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: and harder than this.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: So I think I see her as kind of like a safe pick.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Next athlete,
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Lea Montoya,
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Spanish runner for New Balance,
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: who had some strong early season results,
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: including seventh at a Contalados del Norte,
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: eighth at Calamara Sky Race, and a 16th place at Zagama.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: But she hasn't raced since Zagama, from what I can tell.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: So this might be a return from an injury, and it's tough to tell where she's at.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Last female racer I want to mention on the women's side, Claudia Corral.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: She's a young Spanish speedster who is kind of sneakily far down the list,
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: but has some world-class results this year,
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: including a fifth at the European Champs up-down race and a 12th at ETC.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Last year,
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: she had multiple wins on the 23 and under Skyrunning World Series circuit
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: and appears to be dipping her toes into some of the longer races this year.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: So that's Claudia Corral.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: All right, so those are the women's athletes that I want to talk about for the preview.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: For my picks, same caveats as before, liable to change up my picks.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Going to give you some people who I might sub in.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: And yeah, so fifth place.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: All right, fifth place, I'm going to go Alice Basaran, the French runner.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Fourth place, I'm going to go Patricia Pineda, coming back from a very good Labrado 50K.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Third place, I'm going to go Denisa Dragomir.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: Skyrunning World Series,
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: regular,
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: very consistent racer,
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: dealing with a bit of an injury this year,
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: but her matter, her in old tracks, it seems like she's back in good shape.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Second place,
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go Eva De La Fosse,
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: likes these longer,
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: faster races,
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: has beat Denisa this year,
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: I think at Gorgeous Dutarn, and seems to be an up-and-coming athlete.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: With the win, I'm going to go Sarah Alonzo.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: She seems like the clear favorite and it's kind of her race to lose.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Athletes that I'm liable to swap in, I think Elena Karen Filoska is a safe pick.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: I think that Onditz Arginzones,
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: the I'm liable to either swap out Denisa Dragomir or Patricia Panina.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: It feels like they're both coming off injuries, and I have a little bit of hesitation.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: Natalie Beadle to swap in Ondits Arginzones, and I also think Elena Karen Filoska.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: So that is my preview for Gorby Asusian.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Looking forward on the Fantasy Free Trail calendar.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: We've got Mammoth Trail Fest is coming up this weekend.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: I won't get a preview out,
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: but it seems like David Sinclair is probably pretty clearly the men's favorite.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: And the men's VK field is looking decent with Aries Reading,
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Grant Colligan, Mika Bedin, Rousseau.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Women's Field seems a little bit more open,
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: but I think either Aaron Moyer or Pema Frenchy is going to take the win there.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: We've also got a Golden Trail Series race coming up,
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: the Great Wall race,
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: but they still haven't released the start list, and so I'm hesitant.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's likely I'll be able to get a podcast out with them not releasing
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: the start list.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: So that is what we have to look forward to.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: I hope this preview was helpful.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: I hope you learned a little bit about Gorbia Susan.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: And I hope you will follow along with Skyrunning World Series as it wraps up in
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: the Golden Trail World Series as well.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Thanks as always for listening, guys.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: And hope you have a good day wherever you are.
