- 0:22Away. Hey, what's this is our day from Flaming Wreckage and you're watching
- 0:28listening to Heavy mag. Thanks for having us, Chris PYEA no worries it
- 0:33all, Dave. Good to speak with you again, brother. Yeah,
- 0:36man, it's been a while. It has been make you looking looking as
- 0:39radiant as ever? Oh? Thanks? Man's time day So Flaming Records.
- 0:47You will unleash your new album of Terror Inferner on April the twenty sixth.
- 0:51Mate, like getting close now? How you feeled about it? Yeah?
- 0:56Man, it's all systems go at the moment. I just picked up some
- 0:59merch for the Princess this morning, so they'll be going out with the pre
- 1:02orders pretty soon. Yeah, it's been really good. It's been a pretty
- 1:07intense process, but super rewarding. Much like the recording of the album,
- 1:12I'd say, like, you know, we really jammed everything we could into
- 1:15the time that we had, and I think we've got something really really special
- 1:19with this one. So yeah, we've had a couple of singles out obviously
- 1:22already, so I have hopefully everyone's digging it, but I'm really looking forward
- 1:25to getting the whole thing out of there. It's going to be you know,
- 1:27a cathartic experience to get the whole album out in the world. I
- 1:33benjmannon speaking of the singles, like you have been grip feeding tasty morsels of
- 1:38the album with the singles Which Hunt Goes and Hell on Earth Mate, So
- 1:42would you say over all those three are a good sonic representation and what do
- 1:45you expect from the album as a whole. Uh? Yeah, I think
- 1:49so there's still a future. We've still got a few tricks of our sleeve
- 1:51that we haven't put it out yet. But yeah, like we just thought
- 1:53we'd come out of the gates as hot as possible with Which Hunts. That's
- 1:57the first track on the record, and it's like one of the most aggressive
- 2:00songs on the record, So we just wanted to make a statement with the
- 2:04first single, and I think that song definitely delivers there. And then we've
- 2:07mixed it up a bit with Ghosts, Like you hear some different sort of
- 2:10instrumentation on that one. There's like some slow guitar and some acoustic going on
- 2:14in there, a bit of percussion. It's a few things on this album
- 2:16that we haven't really done before. So that was a good one to kind
- 2:20of you know, wet the appetite for some other moments on the record that
- 2:23you'll hear and yeah, and then Hell on Earth, like that song is
- 2:27probably my favorite. I would say that's i'd say the most case representation of
- 2:34where the album's at, like lyrically, coconceptually, and yeah, it do
- 2:38really take you on a journey that song. I love that like outro a
- 2:42bit. We're working on that at the moment and figuring out how we're going
- 2:46to do a live because we just put so many guitar tracks on that song.
- 2:47So but we're coming up with some cool live jams and stuff, which
- 2:52is also really exciting time to you know, just put the new stuff into
- 2:55a live context. So yeah, man, it's a very exciting time at
- 2:58the moment. It's great. Okay, now I'm glad you mentioned Ghosts Mate,
- 3:01because I want to focus on that track a little bit more specifically.
- 3:05Like it it features the experimental instrumentalization with percussion, apistic and slide guitar.
- 3:10Man, So, where did that idea come from? It's not part of
- 3:13the staple flame and Recorge Diet No, it's not really. I think we
- 3:19just so this is the third album we've done with Chris Samelco, and we've
- 3:24like really put a lot of time into being quite extensive with the pre pro
- 3:30and just getting that right, making sure the structures are all locked away before
- 3:32we hit the studio kind of thing, and that enables us to spend more
- 3:36time sort of experimenting and throwing some stuff out there that we haven't tried before,
- 3:40which was super fun process. Like, I think it all kicked off
- 3:46with some synth, because there's there's a fair bit of synth, like throughout
- 3:50the album. You'll hear it like underneath some of the bigger choruses, and
- 3:53like the outro of Ghosts has got that sort of like big swell at the
- 3:57end, which is a role in Guno run through like a delay and a
- 4:00distortion pedal. It's got that real like blade runner like sci fi edge to
- 4:04it. So once we started fucking around with that kind of stuff, we
- 4:09thought, well, if the song needs this, you know, just just
- 4:13throw it out there. And there's had this sort of clean section in the
- 4:15middle that Jazzy had and I'm like, I'm just feeling some slide. Don't
- 4:18know where it came from, but like just the idea of tucking a little
- 4:23slide bit over there was kind of a cool idea, and I like,
- 4:26it's like guitars, like not the easiest thing to do. I can't play
- 4:29slide for shit, but I just learned it and be able to do that,
- 4:32you know, like I'm know Derek Trucks or anything, but like just
- 4:35when it's tripping and delay, you can kind of get away with it.
- 4:40But yeah, it's just it's like that that section of the song is like
- 4:44it's almost got like a bluesy sort of like you know, country edge to
- 4:49it almost. So it's very like unfamiliar territory for us, like trying that
- 4:54stuff out. But it was like really fun and yeah, just knowing that
- 4:58you can, like any can make anything metal and it's not it's just for
- 5:01the you know, it's just for the growth of the songs. Like there's
- 5:04all these like layers that sit underneath the main instrumentation that we normally use it
- 5:10and it just it takes it to another level, man like sonically, it
- 5:13just really makes it sing and fattens it up nicely. So yeah, it's
- 5:16a super funny process doing all that stuff. And I'm glad we did it
- 5:19because yeah, I'm really happy with the result. It actually raised a bit
- 5:24of an interesting question there bro like the sort of your music sort of more
- 5:27thrash influenced, and that's what you guys are sort of known for. So
- 5:31it's it's easy that you stay us to get lumpered into that box you don't
- 5:34where people just expect the same sort of shit of you all the time.
- 5:38But do you reckon because this is your third album that maybe you've got that
- 5:42confidence, I guess to experiment a bit more and not just deliver what people
- 5:46expect. Yeah, definitely, man, And like you know, we all
- 5:51listen to a lot of different music, and I think that's something that you
- 5:56know, it makes our sound what it is, Like we're always listening to
- 6:00new influences and learning things from different styles of music. Like there's a song
- 6:05called Blood and Bone which has a riff that's kind of derived from like a
- 6:10Japanese influenced scale, and Jazzy is like massively into Japanese music, and like
- 6:15not not necessarily just heavy music as well. Like he listens to all sorts
- 6:18like poff, you know, like sort of jazz like and it's just like
- 6:24the note selection across different cultural influences is really cool like influencer bring to like
- 6:32the like heavy metal style, and yeah, when you bring all that together,
- 6:38it just like it's it's quite a unique thing. And I can't really
- 6:42remember where that like sort of that beating ghosts came from in the middle there,
- 6:46but it's just a combination of a bunch of different influencers all coming in
- 6:51to like and converging into the same place. And like, nothing's a bad
- 6:56idea in the studio, you know, you can get away with that.
- 6:58Like our motto throughout this recording was just like let's just do it, and
- 7:02we can always get rid of it if it's not going to work. So
- 7:05just yeah, it's very it's a freeing experience to be able to try that
- 7:10stuff. And and like you know, have people like given the confidence to
- 7:15bring those sort of influences in h And what sort of feedback you've been getting
- 7:19on it from like long term fan pro like are they embracing that change or
- 7:24are they sort of you know a bit like you can't fucking change what we
- 7:27love. No, I think they're digging it, man, Like I think
- 7:30people people like it when bands take a bit of a swing, but there's
- 7:33still enough on the album too to please like the you know, the standard
- 7:39sort of the standard fare of like you know, sort of flash death metal.
- 7:44So I think there's something there's something on there for everyone. If if
- 7:47that's what you're looking for, you you're more straight up sort of metal,
- 7:50there's plenty of that on there too, but there is you know, enough
- 7:55of that experimentation, and yeah, people have accepted it so fast. So
- 7:59if you like where you are, you're going to love the rest of it
- 8:01because there's heaps of shit on there to wrap your ears around. Up Man
- 8:05and Cherry. Inferno follows on from your last album, Cathedral Bones, which
- 8:09came out in twenty twenty one. Bro, So what's changed with Flaming Record
- 8:13got so Flaming Wreckage between those two albums. Yeah, well, I think
- 8:20that the main difference on this one has just been like the approach to writing,
- 8:22Like back to what I was just saying, like, you know,
- 8:24people that the confidence are bringing those extra influences and stuff like that. But
- 8:28this one was a more much more collaborative process I think previously and we started
- 8:35sort of heading in this direction a little bit on Cathedral, but the band
- 8:39has always been so like guitar driven and then the rest of the song just
- 8:41gets built from like a riff, whereas on this one. And I think
- 8:46that speaks to some of those influencers as well, is that everyone's in on
- 8:54putting the song together and we're much more open to having ideas come from different
- 9:01places. Like, you know, there's like more rhythmic stuff that is,
- 9:05like, rather than it being a cool selection of notes or whatever it is
- 9:09that makes up the rift that we would normally use, it's like Matt has
- 9:13come up with this like cool rhythmic pattern and then we play a rift to
- 9:16that. You know, it's like kind of flipping it on its head.
- 9:18And we were all in the room like nutting these songs out rather than sending
- 9:24rifts in and then building it from there. So that's kind of that was
- 9:26kind of a different writing process to what we've done in the past. And
- 9:31yeah, I think it really worked. I think it gave the songs a
- 9:33little bit more space. And then yeah, back to what we were saying
- 9:37before, you can throw wild shit on top of it, like a twelve
- 9:39string guitar or synth, And I think we kind of intended that we wanted
- 9:45the songs not not necessarily to be more simple, but just to like have
- 9:48a bit more space and like a bit more depth rather than just trying to
- 9:54play like Cathedrals, a pretty relentlessly brutal record, Like there's not much like
- 10:00variation in terms of tempo on that one, but on this, on this
- 10:03time round, we thought we'd experiment with that a little bit more. And
- 10:05I think it's more of a cohesive like a to B Journey than Cathedral or
- 10:09just Still Love. It's just a balsal Wall death metal record, and that's
- 10:13there's a time and a place for that, you know, But this little
- 10:16bit of a different flavor with this, and it's just, yeah, the
- 10:18bigness of it is really what we were trying to capture, and that's what
- 10:22it's going to put you on the spot a little bit, bro. But
- 10:24the press release cause Tara Inferni your hardest hitting record to date, would you
- 10:28agree with that statement? I think so yeah, Like, I mean that's
- 10:33such a subjective thing, like what would you consider to be hard hitting?
- 10:35Like is it like fast or is it you know, like a crushing,
- 10:39like kind of more traditional death metal sort of approach. But I think it's
- 10:46it's all like the production and the songwriting converging together just like makes those real
- 10:54extra heavy sections really hit hard, and like you can really feel like there's
- 10:58a good example is like that outo riff to Ghosts. I remember that song
- 11:03was like I didn't like that song for ages. I was like, we're
- 11:07going to chuck this, but and then right like we got it to pre
- 11:11pro and I was like, oh, maybe I'm starting to hear something now.
- 11:16I'm so glad we did it, because, like you know, it's
- 11:18pretty simple that song is, like the last riff is just like a real
- 11:20like sort of like that on its own, I just remember thinking it's just
- 11:24nothing. But when when it's got the layering on it, when it's got
- 11:28like the bigness of the like instrumentation and all the things that we did to
- 11:33make it like, it kind of can transform a simple part into like this
- 11:37really crushing section. So I guess that's a good lesson that we learned on
- 11:41this one, like being open to keeping the more simplistic riffs in there because
- 11:45they can become some of the most more like memorable. And I also like
- 11:50in terms of like what we used like to record, like we use a
- 11:54lot of old stuff on this, like there's a lot of we use a
- 11:56vintage timer kit, we use an old mess of Boogie Mark four, Like
- 12:01I've got some pretty like older Flying V's. It's like we didn't really approach
- 12:05this from a modern metal perspective in any way. So you know you think
- 12:11about like something like the Black album, where it was like they went as
- 12:13simple as possible and it's made it as big as they could. That was
- 12:18sort of the thinking with a lot of these songs. So a man,
- 12:22So you've actually announced two exclusive album launch shows two men coming up. So
- 12:28you've got one at the Workers Club in Melbourne May the twenty fifth, and
- 12:31one of the Lands down in Sydney on Dune the eighth. I know what
- 12:35you guys like make you love playing live and you love fucking decimating the audience.
- 12:39So what do you got What surprise is you got planned for these two
- 12:41special shows. Well, we're just putting the set list together now, and
- 12:46like I said before, like I really enjoy this, Like time just before,
- 12:52when you haven't played a lot of the songs live before, it can
- 12:56be a little bit nerve wracking because like nerve wracking, sorry, because you
- 12:58know there comes with a certain amount of pressure at least that we put it
- 13:03on ourselves to make sure that they're as good as they can be live.
- 13:05But I really like the process of transforming it from a studio version into a
- 13:11live version because to us, there are two very different things. Like we
- 13:13don't play to a click track or anything. We want the live version of
- 13:18the song to be its own experience. So we're working out little little sections
- 13:22that kind of get like the carry on for a bit longer than they would
- 13:26on the album, and some extra little flavors to give it that extra hard
- 13:30hitting quality live, and also like figuring out how like we're going to split
- 13:35up these guitar parts, because there's a million of them always relish in that
- 13:41challenge. So yeah, man, the set list is going to be killer.
- 13:43We've picked some of our favorite songs off the new record and some ones
- 13:46we haven't played in a little while off the older ones as well, so
- 13:50that'll be really cool. And yeah, we're just quite We're still running this
- 13:54competition called the Hell's Pass Competition. So if you pre ordered the album and
- 13:58you can still pre order the vinyl on our site, you go into the
- 14:01draw to win a bar tab and you can have a beer with us before
- 14:05the show and you get early much access as well, so that'll be really
- 14:07cool just to we're trying to, you know, just do some stuff for
- 14:11the fans that you might not get with other bands and get to hang out
- 14:13with people a little bit more before the show. So that's something to really
- 14:16look forward to. I'm really looking forward to meeting the people that you took
- 14:20the time to go and buy our album before it's even out. It means
- 14:22a huge amount to us. So yeah, man, it's going to be
- 14:26super fun. Now. We're just doing these two exclusive shows for now,
- 14:30and then we've got another tour in the works at the end of the year,
- 14:33so sta shuned for that one. Well, while we're promoting the the
- 14:37fucking drink with the band thing, bro, what is the link where people
- 14:39can go and pre order the album so they can get a chance to have
- 14:41a beer with you. Yeah, so it's just flaming Wreckage dot Com forwards
- 14:46a shop and you'll see CD in the vinyl there. So we've still got
- 14:50a few left. Yeah, it was insane how many pre orders we got.
- 14:54It was awesome, like people really go behind it straight away, So
- 14:56very thankful for that. But there's still time if you want to if you
- 15:00want to join that comp. Oh. Now, I don't normally ask questions
- 15:03about band names made because I find the blame as fuck to be honest,
- 15:07but you guys have made me misspell your name that many fucking times. I
- 15:11want to know why the sea isn't in there, Like, did someone fuck
- 15:13up and you decided to keep it or did you do it deliberately to fuck
- 15:16people like me up? Yeah? Oh man, it's like it's just too
- 15:20late to change it now, you know, But well, no, we
- 15:26did it intentionally. I just remember, like, you know, when the
- 15:28idea of the band name came about, like when we were like, you
- 15:31know, like seventeen eighteen or something. It was like I feel like this
- 15:35needs like some kind of more metal edge, and we're like, well,
- 15:39Megadeth did it, Like there's no a in that. Actually we can get
- 15:41away with something cool there. And then I think we were drawing up some
- 15:45like sketches for the logo and we thought it looks cooler without the sea.
- 15:48So yeah, that's a pretty shit our explanation. But that's all we got.
- 15:52So it's too late to change now. And I'm like half the time
- 15:56it has got the scene in it, and we're you know, all over
- 15:58the to that, so it's still fine. It's easy enough. But yeah,
- 16:02that's mostly the logo. I just want to pay on behalf of music
- 16:07journalists ever. I just want to give a big fuck you you guys for
- 16:10that, because it makes our jobs hard. Man. I used to I
- 16:15used to get the ships and be like, oh, can you change You've
- 16:18got to change that. You spelled our name wrong, like, let's spelled
- 16:22it right. I'm like, yeah, well that's wrong. So that pretty
- 16:26much says it all, doesn't it. Well? On that fine note,
- 16:32brother, we shall leave you there. But Tara Inferna is out April twenty
- 16:36six. You've got those two shows in Melbourne May twenty fifth, didn't he
- 16:38do in the eighth? Check out all the socials. Pre order the album,
