- 0:00Melodic mother of salam-o-alaikum to all our dear
- 0:03viewers and listeners wherever you are watching from around the
- 0:06world, welcome back to another episode of the aftermath of the
- 0:09podcast. And I really hope everyone has
- 0:13been benefiting and learning something new over the last few
- 0:15weeks during the sorrowful month of Muharram from our weekly
- 0:19shows and Sharla. Before we dive straight into
- 0:22this podcast co-host. I've made some I'm sallam said,
- 0:33Ali Haider. I'm the law Hauser mean, it's
- 0:36been good. We've had a couple of weeks.
- 0:40I think to have a week or two since actual are too kind of
- 0:44process to to continue and keep up the momentum Channel, which
- 0:48is our goal and handle us, okay? There's a lot of activity at the
- 0:53moment. There's a lot of modulus in the
- 0:55community. Everyone's hosting at their, how
- 0:56the holmes-san Ask for the use of handling things are going
- 1:01well. But today said I lie.
- 1:02We've got an interesting discussion we do because, you
- 1:05know, it's yes, is related to Heart hmm.
- 1:09It's less sorrowful. And I think it's more insightful
- 1:12for each other. And before I do mention the
- 1:15podcast, I like to welcome our special guest for today's
- 1:18podcast. Salam, o aleikum wa barik
- 1:26pleasure to be here. How we found.
- 1:29The UK's of all UK is very nice reminds me of Home, Sweden, just
- 1:35that. The roads are different and the
- 1:36car's driver. The first time in the UK,
- 1:39actually, it's my second time. The first time I was here, I was
- 1:42doing a different show and I was there for a few days and I went
- 1:45back in, this is my second time. I'm sure everyone's wondering
- 1:48talking about, hmm, and let's dive in.
- 1:51So the conversation we really want to have here today are made
- 1:55but more importantly with brother Abdullah who is our
- 1:57special guests are. Is what is the importance or
- 2:00what shall I say, value social media has had or other media
- 2:08platforms importance for the message of karbala Imam Hussain.
- 2:13So interesting question, because if it were not for YouTube for
- 2:18we're not for Instagram, if we're not for Twitter, a lot of
- 2:21people would miss out on very important lectures or Snippets
- 2:24of lectures where people utilize those.
- 2:28Those videos and learn a few historical aspects of karbala of
- 2:34the characters who are in karbala and of the people who
- 2:38sacrifice themselves for The Message of Islam.
- 2:41Generally speaking, it's interesting because there's
- 2:43definitely a couple of angles to kind of dissect.
- 2:48This with first is obviously looking at Muharram online from
- 2:52the perspective of the Shiite Community.
- 2:54Yeah and the service that we especially like for example Us
- 2:58as content creators the sort of goal that we have to create
- 3:02online content for the community within.
- 3:04And then, of course, there's the external content that we put out
- 3:07there to give and to kind of promote the message of a popular
- 3:11saying to The Wider Community, to wider Society more generally.
- 3:15So, maybe there's different ways we can approach this but it's
- 3:18definitely an interesting thing. Maybe we could argue that in the
- 3:20last 20 years, we've seen a exponential growth in terms of
- 3:26not just the quantity of Content, the quality of content
- 3:29that's coming out on, on, on media platforms and then of
- 3:33course, responses on social media platforms.
- 3:36So it's an interesting way to look at it.
- 3:37But yeah, I don't know, really where to begin again.
- 3:41Such a big discussion. I know where to begin.
- 3:43I've done that. Yes.
- 3:44How has online platforms play the role in your life.
- 3:49So social media essentially has taught me.
- 3:53I'd say about 90% of what, I know when it comes to the shale.
- 3:58When it comes to Islam, in general, start off with small,
- 4:01Instagram posts here and there that was before my show.
- 4:05And, you know, I was introduced to, to share through these group
- 4:11chats and space is, and these lives will waive, or not
- 4:17whatever you want to call it, right?
- 4:18So, in a way, you can argue even that.
- 4:22If you were not for YouTube, the lectures I watch on YouTube of,
- 4:27you know, certain Scholars. As or whatnot, then I wouldn't
- 4:30have had, you know, been introduced to a lot of
- 4:33historical aspects and even. So I was introduced to like
- 4:39certain amount of websites that give us information and I give
- 4:45us like books and sources which is a lot.
- 4:48It's very beneficial, but it comes essentially from, from
- 4:53social media. But how about you guys how has
- 4:55social media been like a social mentioned you?
- 4:58Chirp. Yes, straight away.
- 4:59I just remembered, you know, it being like I think almost 10
- 5:02years since I've really been, you know, taking some solve,
- 5:07should I say lectures at home, listening to lectures at home on
- 5:09YouTube and it's amazing to see like direct access.
- 5:12Whenever you want to hear a lecture, be a part of Ramadan or
- 5:16or you want to hear a lecture, I could be about anything it can
- 5:18be, for example about Halal making me.
- 5:20Yeah. Pop music wherever it is.
- 5:22You can find on YouTube and I find something so beautiful to
- 5:26have quick access. You don't start Like you might
- 5:28have a question, something's telling me ask you a question
- 5:31and you want to relate to them, but show them, for example, you
- 5:34know, this scholar mention this ruling of the scholars Mission,
- 5:38this thing, this amazing to have that could, you know, I said, we
- 5:40further, we forget a lot of the times we become complacent
- 5:44because For the First Time in the history of she Aslam, we
- 5:48actually have direct instant access to information.
- 5:52Literally in our pockets, you can find the answer to anything
- 5:56whether it's Halal Haram mustahab.
- 5:58Microwave it, whatever. Sort of question you have, you
- 6:01have access to good and you have access to bad, but that access
- 6:04to instant information can be dangerous.
- 6:06Can't you see what? I mean, of course, there's so
- 6:08many pros and cons, there's that we have to weigh up and balance
- 6:10the arguments. But generally speaking, when we
- 6:12talk about social media and of course in the, in the podcast,
- 6:16in the past, we've talked about the dangers and the threats of
- 6:18social media. And in Charlotte today, we'll
- 6:20talk about maybe some of the opportunities that were social
- 6:22media social media presents, but I found that interesting.
- 6:25I've done the how you said that 90% of your knowledge came I'm
- 6:28from social media because you to particular and I think all of
- 6:32us. Hey, so far I think for all of
- 6:35us as we're with from a generation where certain
- 6:40prominent scholars in English language have taught us the
- 6:43majority of what we know yes from especially on a foundation
- 6:45level going through the ages of Baloo especially for me you're
- 6:49becoming a young man and you need to learn about issues in
- 6:53the world. You need to know about the
- 6:55biography of imams or you need to know about you know, Some of
- 6:58the challenges that are faced towards this year school and
- 7:01some of these answers are found on social media where perhaps
- 7:04they were or weren't taught in our madrasas if we even went to
- 7:06them. She said, what I mean?
- 7:08So that is an incredible opportunity out there.
- 7:09I think maybe for parents who are nursing home, we it's maybe
- 7:13a challenge to parents at home, to investigate a research, how
- 7:17much content is out there, because there is a lot there.
- 7:20But it's maybe it's an interesting one because there is
- 7:23a threat and there is obviously misguiding information mostly
- 7:26because yeah. Yeah.
- 7:28You can receive the most incorrect, false information
- 7:30about everything and anything, and I think happens today and
- 7:34lots of people get misinformed. The, so let me ask you if you
- 7:36don't mind because your initial question was about about the
- 7:38loan Hussein, and I've kind of, kind of taken us on a tangent.
- 7:42But when you talk about Muharram, you talk about the
- 7:45spreading of the message of the mm.
- 7:46Um, what what comes to your mind, really Instagram,
- 7:53Instagram. First thing that comes to my
- 7:54head is Instagram because I'm the law, you know, especially
- 7:58Now, we are the month of Muharram and suffer, everything
- 8:02that's on. My feet is like horror related.
- 8:04Yeah, every day. We were listening to a short
- 8:07clip by a scholar. I'm listening to, you know,
- 8:10unless and I can learn that happened that karbala so was
- 8:12like non-stop non-stop of learning new things when it
- 8:16comes to more of the month of Muharram.
- 8:17But I want to talk about the dangers of it.
- 8:20Yeah, sometimes we can hear something believe.
- 8:22It's right and it's not, yeah, I don't know.
- 8:25That's had an impact or you've experienced anything.
- 8:28You think yourself or well, there's a lot of pages out there
- 8:31that will give you a, quote by said Imam or the prophets Allah,
- 8:36and it doesn't exist and it never exist.
- 8:37There's no sauce. Just just just slap.
- 8:40What's your favorite? What's your favorite?
- 8:41Fake IDs. There's a lot of she put out
- 8:43there as people at home, you know, which one is.
- 8:45I've had the the flower in the Palm fragrance somebody who
- 8:50understands you. Like, I feel like the flower,
- 8:53that whole like be like water, my friend, they call Bruce Lee
- 8:56and they say it's mama. Is anything, but I think the
- 9:00point being is that the we have thousands of example.
- 9:04Yeah, I looked exactly like you have a lot of Hadith, from
- 9:07coffee cup of coffee, or from behind, and War.
- 9:10But rather than going referring back to those, you have, they
- 9:15caught Bruce Lee and they ascribe it to.
- 9:18The plan is only because when you, when you let me give an
- 9:21example, you love something. Yes.
- 9:23And you want to present it in the most fashionable and
- 9:26appealing way to One as possible.
- 9:28I'll give an example. I'm a Liverpool fan as many
- 9:31people know. On the podcast is always
- 9:32mentioned me too. I love.
- 9:34Are you there myself? As I was saying.
- 9:37So if let's say we love our football club.
- 9:39Yes, we want to to promote our football club and we want to
- 9:42tell people how much we loved it and what's the best team in the
- 9:44world. And definitely what we'll do is
- 9:45we'll find the most appealing things.
- 9:47Something like an emotional video sentimental, this that
- 9:51I'll put out the the same way when we talk about that about
- 9:53the line her saying, which, of course, means it abundantly more
- 9:56to us than anything material. Like sports or whatever.
- 10:00But something like that. People will find a way to try
- 10:03and sell it, or advertise it in such a way where you use fake
- 10:06Hadith and you may not know it. It's, you know, it's innocent a
- 10:09lot of the time you're innocently ignorant as someone
- 10:11once said to me and you put out there in a way that is
- 10:14fashionable, maybe, but it's dangerous because obviously
- 10:17there's a risk of deviating us and obviously the followers
- 10:21nowadays, it's interesting. Sorry, I'm rambling.
- 10:23But it's interesting, the use of the word follow up because when
- 10:27you follow Someone you're consuming voluntarily the
- 10:30information that they put out there and you are four years at
- 10:33times some points. You are following the tweets,
- 10:36the ideologies and so on that people are putting out there and
- 10:39all the other chemical podcast follow the aftermarket podcast,
- 10:42it's of the grindley 1000 subscribers by the end of 2020,
- 10:45to ensure John. For example, we might see the
- 10:49most innocent. Like I said earlier, an innocent
- 10:51tweet, which someone may put out there not knowing that it's,
- 10:54maybe deviating or maybe not very accurate for Someone might
- 10:59tweet something about the concept of to worsen or Cena.
- 11:03And they may word in such a way which is outside the tenets of
- 11:07she Islam. You see what I mean?
- 11:09Where it becomes, you know, you saw them in exaggerated and
- 11:12whatnot and I think a lot of us agree at home that the ultimate
- 11:16goal is to find a lot of on Thailand to talk to Allah, spawn
- 11:18table, and use torso. As a means to elevate and to
- 11:23Adorn your prayer, your worship to love.
- 11:25That makes n come closer to Allah to come close to Allah.
- 11:27But of Of course, there's the Trap and we see a lot on social
- 11:30media people fall into the Trap of exaggerating to was stolen
- 11:33and and come across. Hello, right?
- 11:36Yes, becomes exaggerated, that's an example.
- 11:38One example of you have someone who's feeling very passionate
- 11:42they come home, it's the 9th night of Muharram and they you
- 11:46know, they've had the best lecturer of their life.
- 11:49They start tweeting, you know your mom give me everything I
- 11:52want in this world. Yeah and Mom this that I pray to
- 11:55you x y and z. Now then The terminology is a
- 12:00very tricky one for us now, obviously that's a very specific
- 12:03example, example as well. But I mean to say, is if we're
- 12:06talking about the message of Abdullah, Hussein and social
- 12:09media, we can either fall into the Trap of becoming propagators
- 12:16of the truth or propagators of falsehood.
- 12:18And that's for us as an individual based on an
- 12:20individual basis, to take the responsibility to do the
- 12:22research and obviously be responsible online.
- 12:24But when we talk about the opportunities that social media
- 12:27presents, There's a lot to learn and there's a lot to gain a lot
- 12:30of Knowledge from actually because you can find beauty in
- 12:35its, but you can also find danger and we're not for your
- 12:40like, let's say everyone's individual intellect.
- 12:43Like every every person and his intellect, if you are not
- 12:46intelligent, not, you would fall into the danger of following the
- 12:49wrong post and falling into extreme, perhaps.
- 12:53And if you like any other person who uses the intellect sees
- 12:57that, Is a danger you would divert away from it and you
- 13:01would benefit from the beautiful post.
- 13:03I exist like this beautiful threads out there on that's a
- 13:07Twitter there's speak about methyl on.
- 13:09For example the mercy of Allah subhanaw taala and it's a
- 13:12beautiful thread that goes around the speaks about Hadith
- 13:16this. The Surah.
- 13:17This is Ayah, Allah says that this, you know, he's the most
- 13:20merciful and he forgives all sins and this Imam says this and
- 13:24it's beautiful. Yeah.
- 13:26And you have an extra tie speaks about Outside are and how to
- 13:29perfect your Salah and the next post about Zach, how fasting
- 13:33everything right? But all of these things are
- 13:37beneficial and beautiful. And then you can have.
- 13:40For example, I have experienced in group chats, you have
- 13:43conversations, people have Concords, they have debates all
- 13:49conversations, right? And during those conversations,
- 13:52you see that this guy follows this collar.
- 13:54So he has this opinion and this person was very knowledgeable,
- 13:58you follows this scholar and this is part of the scholars
- 14:02opinion. So it's a very fruitful, see See
- 14:05such conversations take. I think just to add to that,
- 14:07though. It's, there's also as for every,
- 14:10you know, there's so many benefits from the opportunities
- 14:12and anyone could be a content creator on social media.
- 14:14I think we need to remember that because you can share positive
- 14:17experience or you can share something that you've learned
- 14:19with your friends and with your followers.
- 14:21And that's a beautiful thing about social media, you learn
- 14:24and you share. So we have to be conscious that
- 14:26when we tweet or when we post on Instagram, anyone in the world
- 14:29can access it and that could be a danger or it can be an
- 14:32opportunity. When we talk about opportunities
- 14:34we have Remember that the, the story of say, the shahada they
- 14:38Salam itself, is viral in its nature.
- 14:42You know, his story is infectious with the love, we
- 14:45always talk about this. Yeah, you know, the world in
- 14:47engagement by even yes she has, of course, connecting one bus
- 14:53and I apologize. I rejected.
- 14:55No, no. But I had a thought that came to
- 14:58my head. It was like, I think me for
- 15:01sure. I'm sure I can speak on your
- 15:03behalf. We were lucky.
- 15:05To be raised without the need of online media.
- 15:08Wherever. Yeah, I'm done.
- 15:09Gain any shall we say, you know, slab acknowledge or learn about
- 15:13the the attributes of the elevator - Salam all gone as far
- 15:16as what happened at karbala the day of Ashura.
- 15:18Yeah. But for many they don't have
- 15:20that person have that yeah, for many online, the online
- 15:23platforms is the only thing they can access to better.
- 15:26Don't look knowledge and understanding of Islam.
- 15:30I see your point because, you know, a lot of not this
- 15:34knowledge, you can find it in, let's say three places.
- 15:37If you, if you weren't on social media, you would find.
- 15:40Let's say if you want back hundred years, you'd find a,
- 15:43this knowledge and lectures. So you go to a modulus and
- 15:46there's the share sittin on the me, all the seeds and it gives
- 15:50you the mocktail nights why night during Muharram.
- 15:53And then you kind of get an image of what the market really
- 15:55was like in Korea during three years, right?
- 15:58Then you have The books itself. There's a, there's books of the
- 16:02mocktail of what happened to Mom.
- 16:03Has a nice and the third option is, of course, going to school,
- 16:08like Madras and they teach you. This is what happened.
- 16:11Some people don't have that privilege.
- 16:13For instance, myself I did especially if they're not really
- 16:17raising a shower household, exactly.
- 16:19So especially if someone who isn't from Russia household or
- 16:22Shia, not necessarily shall also, but she has Community
- 16:26less. It is there's a lot of people
- 16:27that live in different countries that are Are not necessarily
- 16:30sure no I guess just nothing. He's and now you're shh living
- 16:36in a population. That is much majority against
- 16:41your beliefs so now if you want to attend the modulus you're
- 16:45risking your life just like the people who want to zr0 during
- 16:49the times of said, say let's say Saddam people were risking their
- 16:53lives. Does this, but was very
- 16:56dangerous, some people getting killed, some people getting
- 16:58kidnapped and in a sense. Now, some people are afraid to
- 17:03go to modulus in these. So that's why it's so important,
- 17:05sorry to interrupt. That's why it's so important for
- 17:08there to be beneficial and substantial content out there
- 17:12100%. So YouTube, you have YouTube,
- 17:14there's my jealous. Yes.
- 17:15Yeah, I've said, sheriff and said, Sharon said, said all
- 17:18these great sad and great sure that are out there, the present,
- 17:21the message of a little bit. I am Sonam in such an eloquent
- 17:25Of a way for the people that can't attend my Jones and to add
- 17:28to that as well. For those who don't know about
- 17:30the story of Imam Hussain, there's so many opportunities
- 17:33and things which can be shared on social media.
- 17:35For example, there's so many organizations to name one who's
- 17:38her saying an incredible Global platform which presents the
- 17:42message of the Bible are saying to The Wider world of the
- 17:45general public in a face-to-face capacity, by handing things out
- 17:48by having events. Interfaith, and so on and so
- 17:51forth, things like that can be shared on social media and can
- 17:54reach people and touch their hearts.
- 17:55And that is something we can adapt.
- 17:59In terms of our goals that when we talk about Muharram online,
- 18:03we go from Talking engaging in issues, which are a waste of
- 18:06time and useless to be really honest waste of time issues and
- 18:10find ways to connect with the wider world and our with other
- 18:12people and learn from each other.
- 18:14So, that's the ultimate goal Sherlock before you head out.
- 18:20Because I know you're flying away soon and shall let me ask
- 18:23you one question, final question.
- 18:25This is don't ask him something that he won't come back.
- 18:30Yeah, well, I was actually gonna say to you.
- 18:31This is your second trip to London.
- 18:33What are we seeing you again in Sharla inshaallah?
- 18:35Very soon in Charlotte and Charlotte, are we going to see
- 18:38you online on social media before the house definitely be
- 18:41online is shall love sharing my input towards the share
- 18:45Community hundred and have you got any message for the viewers
- 18:48or anything? Because we always do the
- 18:50Subscribe like share? Yeah.
- 18:51So before we get into the like share, subscribe, I would Judge
- 18:55everyone out there in the world to, at the very least, because
- 18:59we have this thing called an Imam of our time.
- 19:02That many of us, we mention it as lip service, but not many of
- 19:06us actually know who the Imam of our time is.
- 19:10We don't research the books that are methadone catabolize a by an
- 19:13Omani. We have a lot of very beautiful
- 19:16books that let us understand who our Imam of our time is and to
- 19:20get closer to him because we have our own, we have any man,
- 19:23we can speak to him. He can hear us.
- 19:26We forget, he's living it. We should Easy Living.
- 19:28We forget, we have a hunch. It'll honor.
- 19:30The proof of existence of God on Earth.
- 19:32And once we research, we, as we understand that, we have a duty
- 19:36to uphold, which is to develop ourselves to the point where we
- 19:43can be ready for the reappearance of the Imam.
- 19:46And once we develop ourselves that song, we hastened
- 19:49reappearance. Because a lot of us, we do that,
- 19:52you know, male our history, a of socialism, But do we really work
- 19:57on ourselves to actually make him come back to actually make
- 20:00him reappear and all we all we were the representatives of the
- 20:05Imam. All social media, because social
- 20:07media identity is still real life and we are still
- 20:09representing him or we aim to represent him and maybe
- 20:12sometimes we forget that we slip on social media.
- 20:14We swear we reply with foul language to people, things like
- 20:19that is not representative or not becoming of the followers of
- 20:23Imam Ali hodja. So that's I think I'm shallow we
- 20:25can maybe reflect on and then shall we can change.
- 20:28Inshallah is interesting that you mentioned the, the post and
- 20:31slipping out and stuff. Because a lot of people forget
- 20:33that comments messages and posts.
- 20:36When you insult, someone fell the Malaika still there, it's
- 20:40still rely. God is still going to hold you
