- 0:32Speaker 1: after party. This is the show after the show, the
- 0:34Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get you from
- 0:36Speaker 1: one full episode of Disgraceland.
- 0:37Speaker 2: To the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt.
- 0:40Speaker 1: On this bonus episode, we are talking about Prince Part two.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We're also previewing our coming Boscote episode talking slap Herd
- 0:47Speaker 1: around the World in the Hollywood Land Minute, along with
- 0:51Speaker 1: a music and true crime Trial of the Century update,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and we get into your voicemails, text DMS emails and.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Has always a whole lot of rosie.
- 0:58Speaker 1: All right, Discos, let's get into it. So A big
- 1:13Speaker 1: part of the Prince Part two episode that we released
- 1:15Speaker 1: this week deals with the time the Prince was creating
- 1:18Speaker 1: making music in the nineteen eighties, specifically the mid eighties,
- 1:21Speaker 1: specifically the time around the release of Prince's album Signed
- 1:25Speaker 1: of the Times to Believe, came out in nineteen eighty seven,
- 1:28Speaker 1: this is Prince's social commentary on that era. Sign of
- 1:32Speaker 1: the Times is thematically Prince took a cue here from
- 1:36Speaker 1: Curtis Mayfield, from Marvin Gay, and he's addressing societal ills
- 1:41Speaker 1: from that era, the eighties, crack epidemic, poverty, AIDS, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: like I said, just in general societal ills. Okay, Now
- 1:49Speaker 1: I found a great quote about Sign of the Times
- 1:52Speaker 1: from writer, and I apologize if I'm butchering this guy's name.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I couldn't find the pronunciation for it. Writer's name is
- 1:58Speaker 1: Hanif abduurra Queed. I believe that's how you say his name,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and honey, if if I'm getting it wrong, I apologize,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but I'm gonna spells last name if you guys want to look.
- 2:06Speaker 2: This up ab d u r r a quib. Okay.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So this quote from Haneif says on the politics of
- 2:14Speaker 1: Sign of the Times that they quote are not those
- 2:17Speaker 1: of solutions, but those of survival in the face of
- 2:21Speaker 1: which you might not survive for much longer. The politics
- 2:25Speaker 1: of survival say that we may dance in the face
- 2:28Speaker 1: of a coming apocalypse. We may, in the face of
- 2:30Speaker 1: a coming apocalypse, go to bed with someone or love someone.
- 2:34Speaker 1: We didn't know right before it started. We may play
- 2:37Speaker 1: in the streets or fantasize about a new world to
- 2:40Speaker 1: run into. On Sign of the Times, after laying out
- 2:43Speaker 1: a terrifying landscape, Prince pushes the landscape aside, lays out
- 2:48Speaker 1: all of our options for survival, and tells us to
- 2:50Speaker 1: take our pick again. That's Hanef Abdurah Queb for MTV
- 2:56Speaker 1: News actually on Prince's Sign of the Times, the Purple
- 2:59Speaker 1: Ones commentary on the era that he was creating in
- 3:02Speaker 1: at the time in the mid nineteen eighties.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Now, this era, the era that we are in right
- 3:06Speaker 2: now in.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Twenty twenty five, needs some attention in today's after party. Survival,
- 3:13Speaker 1: as you just heard in that quote, was a theme
- 3:16Speaker 1: of Sign of the Times, And I can't help but
- 3:18Speaker 1: be reminded of Cassie Ventura, who testified this week and
- 3:22Speaker 1: this era's Trial of the century in the Sean Diddy
- 3:25Speaker 1: Comb's case. Okay, I'm not sure what Cassie Ventura feared
- 3:30Speaker 1: the most before she went to bed with Sean Combs
- 3:32Speaker 1: for the first time. I'm not sure what she perceived
- 3:35Speaker 1: to be her quote unquote coming apocalypse, or if she
- 3:39Speaker 1: had one at all. But if the prosecution in this
- 3:42Speaker 1: trial that started this week is telling the truth. Then
- 3:46Speaker 1: it's being made clear to all of us right now
- 3:48Speaker 1: in that courtroom that Diddy himself was Cassie's apocalypse. The
- 3:53Speaker 1: details revealed in the first few days of this trial,
- 3:58Speaker 1: including of course He's recounting of their relationship up there
- 4:03Speaker 1: on the stand, these details are shocking. Never mind the
- 4:07Speaker 1: sordid sex stuff, of which there is plenty, the more
- 4:10Speaker 1: benign details about how Cassie and did He first got
- 4:13Speaker 1: together play out like a cautionary after school special for
- 4:17Speaker 1: young beautiful women trying to make it in the music business.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Cassie testified on Tuesday of this week for six hours.
- 4:25Speaker 1: You can hear from the prosecutors questioning the building blocks
- 4:30Speaker 1: for the racketeering case that they're trying to make, and
- 4:33Speaker 1: the prosecution, i think, based on the legal analysis that
- 4:35Speaker 1: I've read so far, did pretty well in this area. Okay,
- 4:39Speaker 1: now it remains to be seen of this is going
- 4:41Speaker 1: to play out. Cassie has not yet had to stand
- 4:44Speaker 1: up there and take questions from the defense. But as
- 4:47Speaker 1: for the prosecution, like I mentioned, they had a lot
- 4:51Speaker 1: of questions regarding who worked for who, who did what, what,
- 4:54Speaker 1: their roles were and that's gonna speak to the racketeering
- 4:58Speaker 1: part of this. But they also got and this is
- 5:00Speaker 1: what you're gonna read a lot about. You're gonna hear
- 5:01Speaker 1: a lot about the coming days. They also got into
- 5:04Speaker 1: the freak off details. Now, it's important to note that
- 5:08Speaker 1: these details were discussed in a courtroom, okay, under the
- 5:13Speaker 1: penalty of perjury. This is much much different than sordid
- 5:18Speaker 1: celebrity sexual conjecture on TikTok. Okay, this is where things
- 5:24Speaker 1: get real, guys. These details are being brought out into
- 5:27Speaker 1: the public by prosecutors because prosecutors are betting that they
- 5:31Speaker 1: have enough evidence to prove that these details are true
- 5:35Speaker 1: and that they're going to help them win their case. Now,
- 5:38Speaker 1: that is a much different paradigm than some TikTok creator
- 5:42Speaker 1: blasting out whatever their cousin, stepfather's uncles mechanic heard at
- 5:45Speaker 1: the cookout over the weekend.
- 5:46Speaker 2: It doesn't mean that these details that we just.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Heard in court this week are true, not yet anyway,
- 5:54Speaker 1: But it does mean that their veracity is a lot
- 5:57Speaker 1: more likely than anything that we've heard in public prior
- 5:59Speaker 1: to the start of this trial. This is why when
- 6:03Speaker 1: I did that last episode on Sean Combs, I based
- 6:06Speaker 1: the entire thing on the indictments, the actual legal documents, Okay,
- 6:14Speaker 1: because with so much noise out there, who the hell
- 6:16Speaker 1: knows what is real and what is not. But when
- 6:19Speaker 1: prosecutors approached the details, the facts, the accusations, when they
- 6:25Speaker 1: approached them with legality, you know you're airing closer to
- 6:30Speaker 1: the truth than anything else.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And I want to take a little victory lap here
- 6:34Speaker 1: and note that a lot of the details that Cassie
- 6:38Speaker 1: gave on the stand corroborate the details from our last.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Episode on Sean Combs.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Specifically, one little bit here is the bit about the
- 6:47Speaker 1: color of her fingernails, that specificity that Combs made her
- 6:54Speaker 1: paint her nails with before engaging in a frea cough
- 6:57Speaker 1: that came out in court. And there's more. There's a
- 6:58Speaker 1: ton more details are Honestly, Prince would blush, Okay, perhaps
- 7:04Speaker 1: Prince would even gag, maybe throw up in his mouth.
- 7:07Speaker 2: The details are fucking disgusting.
- 7:11Speaker 1: They are gnarly. And every legal analyst that I've heard
- 7:14Speaker 1: from thus far who was in the courtroom has said
- 7:16Speaker 1: the same thing that they were hard to hear. Okay,
- 7:21Speaker 1: this isn't some hardcore true crime murder with disgusting, violent details.
- 7:27Speaker 2: This is all about sex.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And every legal analyst that I've heard so far has
- 7:32Speaker 1: said the same thing, that they just wanted the testimony
- 7:36Speaker 1: to stop mass stripper heels as you can guess, lots
- 7:43Speaker 1: and lots of baby oil, even more baby oil than
- 7:47Speaker 1: you can imagine. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Cassie testified about unwanted sex acts that she was forced
- 7:58Speaker 1: into by Sean Combs, how he would urinate under her,
- 8:02Speaker 1: into her mouth at one point, choking her in that act. Okay,
- 8:05Speaker 1: it's there's also there's so much more, Okay. She testified
- 8:09Speaker 1: to more discusting behavior that I'm going to get into here.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's worse than what I just detailed, Okay, so that
- 8:14Speaker 1: should tell you how bad it is. I'm not going
- 8:16Speaker 1: to get into it here.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's that bad. It's im important to note.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I guess this is as good place as any that
- 8:21Speaker 1: Shawn Combs denies any wrongdoing here. Okay, maintains his innocence,
- 8:26Speaker 1: But in the first few days of this trial, I'm
- 8:32Speaker 1: just on the one hand, I am shocked that I'm
- 8:36Speaker 1: shocked after everything I know about this, about all the
- 8:38Speaker 1: details that I already understand. I'm already well versed in.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I'm shocked that I am shocked, but here I am.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Now by the time you've heard this episode, Cassie will
- 8:45Speaker 1: have had another session on the stand. Who knows what
- 8:48Speaker 1: other details are going to be divulged. The defense is
- 8:51Speaker 1: going to get shot here at proving to the jury
- 8:53Speaker 1: that Cassie was a willing participant in this activity. That's
- 8:56Speaker 1: going to be what their claim is, that she was
- 8:58Speaker 1: just as freaky as he was. We're going to see
- 9:01Speaker 1: if they're successful and making that case or not. This
- 9:03Speaker 1: trial is going to be going on for about another
- 9:05Speaker 1: eight weeks or so. The first week is proving to
- 9:07Speaker 1: be explosive, and it's so explosive that I'm spending a
- 9:12Speaker 1: little more time here in the after party on it
- 9:13Speaker 1: than I thought I would. And I just so you
- 9:16Speaker 1: guys know, as the trial develops, I'm going to be
- 9:18Speaker 1: bringing you my point of view on the facts, on
- 9:20Speaker 1: the details, on what we're getting in court when I
- 9:22Speaker 1: think it's relevant. I'm not saying we're gonna be doing
- 9:24Speaker 1: it every week, but who knows, maybe the details will
- 9:26Speaker 1: just be you won't.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Be able to ignore them.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Maybe this will be a true trial of the century,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and maybe we'll have cause to discuss every week. But
- 9:35Speaker 1: like I said, when something pops off and I feel
- 9:38Speaker 1: like my voice and my opinion is going to add something,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm going to talk to you about it here in
- 9:43Speaker 1: the after party. And then when this trial wraps, like
- 9:46Speaker 1: I said, in about eight weeks, we will have our
- 9:49Speaker 1: third and final Sean Diddycombe's episode on Disgraceland for you guys.
- 9:55Speaker 1: All right, before all of that, we have a rewind
- 9:59Speaker 1: episode of disgrace and coming your way tomorrow next to
- 10:01Speaker 1: your feed. Right after this bonus episode, we're revisiting our
- 10:04Speaker 1: episodes on The Grateful Dead. Part one on the Dead's Origins,
- 10:08Speaker 1: which is a ride through mid sixties Americana weird Americana,
- 10:12Speaker 1: i should say, with Ron pig Pen mccernin, and then
- 10:14Speaker 1: Part two, which is more of a complete career span
- 10:18Speaker 1: of the Grateful Dead, dead Heads, Dead Curious, you fish heads,
- 10:21Speaker 1: you jam band officionados. These episodes are for you. They're
- 10:25Speaker 1: for everybody, really, but they're really for you, guys.
- 10:28Speaker 2: This wasn't my world. I brought myself into your world,
- 10:31Speaker 2: and I hope that I held a mirror up to
- 10:32Speaker 2: it in a way that you appreciate. So check out
- 10:35Speaker 2: these episodes.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Incidentally, we're in the middle of planning right now a
- 10:39Speaker 1: pretty incredible super crimy episode on fish that we're going
- 10:44Speaker 1: to be bringing to you later in this year. But
- 10:47Speaker 1: that's another story, all right. Following the Dead Coming Tuesday,
- 10:49Speaker 1: our episode on bosc Yacht, we cover not only Boscot's
- 10:52Speaker 1: art in this episode, but also his musicianship. Okay, so
- 10:55Speaker 1: when you're listening to this episode, be thinking about what musicians,
- 10:58Speaker 1: what rock stars excelled at a second art or a
- 11:02Speaker 1: second sport. It could be a visual art like Boscot.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Lots of rock stars are or were great painters. George
- 11:11Speaker 1: Harrison comes to mind, Bob Dylan, but it can be anything.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Be a sport. Rod Stewart supposedly a great soccer player.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I think Lars from Metallica almost went pro as a
- 11:20Speaker 1: tennis player. I know that Bruce from iern Maiden pretty
- 11:23Speaker 1: serious fencer. So I'm interested in this because I think
- 11:26Speaker 1: the same sort of tenacity that you have to bring
- 11:29Speaker 1: to one media and one art, one piece of subject matter,
- 11:34Speaker 1: one area of your life that you commit yourself to.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I think it's transferable in a lot of ways for
- 11:39Speaker 1: a lot of people, and I'm interested to know who
- 11:41Speaker 1: has uh, who's done it in sort of two arenas,
- 11:44Speaker 1: so to speak, Which rock star was just as good
- 11:46Speaker 1: at another art or sport as he or she was
- 11:49Speaker 1: at music. That's gonna be the question of the week
- 11:51Speaker 1: next week. Six one seven nine oh six six six
- 11:53Speaker 1: three eight. Give me a call, let me know, send
- 11:55Speaker 1: me a text with your answers. I'll be hanging on
- 11:58Speaker 1: the telephone with you, guys on the other side of
- 11:59Speaker 1: this with your voicemails and text from.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Last week's question of the week right after this. All right,
- 12:19Speaker 2: we are back. Apple podcast listeners.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Make sure you have auto downloads turned on so you
- 12:23Speaker 1: don't miss any episodes. All right, guys, listen six one
- 12:27Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. You know
- 12:28Speaker 1: where I'm at him in the phone booth, that's the
- 12:30Speaker 1: one across the hall. I'm hanging out with the telephone.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You want to send me a voicemail or text six
- 12:33Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight to
- 12:35Speaker 1: do so, you know. In light of this Prince episode,
- 12:38Speaker 1: this week, we asked the question which artists best seesed
- 12:42Speaker 1: their moment their moment in time? Was it Stevie Wonder?
- 12:45Speaker 1: I think I threw Stevie out there. Marvin Gaye. Perhaps
- 12:48Speaker 1: I talked about Curtis Mayfield a little bit earlier in
- 12:50Speaker 1: this episode.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Six oh nine calls in with this answer, chick your.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Badass, it's Wallhawston from the sixth oh ninth Country Listen.
- 13:00Speaker 3: The person who sees the moment most was Elvis Presley
- 13:03Speaker 3: nineteen fifty six. Come on, forget about it, bro.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Six oh nine.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Great answer, obvious, obvious one, Elvis Pressley. I can't believe
- 13:13Speaker 1: I didn't think of that.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Appreciate you.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Thanks for calling in. Let's get the same question answered
- 13:18Speaker 1: from the nine to one six.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, this is mister Taylor from Raleigh, North Carolina,
- 13:25Speaker 3: by the way of the nine one six, responding to
- 13:27Speaker 3: your question about a band that captured a moment in time,
- 13:32Speaker 3: and this is one that is definitely not great music,
- 13:35Speaker 3: but I think they hit the mark. LNFAO party band
- 13:40Speaker 3: comes out in two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine,
- 13:42Speaker 3: twenty ten, or in the midst of a recession, or
- 13:46Speaker 3: in two different wars.
- 13:48Speaker 4: The country was.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Divided politically, and myself, as an older millennial, was struggling
- 13:54Speaker 3: as where many others work to deal with an economy
- 13:57Speaker 3: that was not providing options and opportunities that we were.
- 14:00Speaker 3: And here comes a band that comes out and has
- 14:03Speaker 3: a simple message which is essentially, fuck it, man, we
- 14:07Speaker 3: might as well have a good time. We might as
- 14:08Speaker 3: well party. Around that time, I was in my late
- 14:11Speaker 3: twenties early thirties, you could not go into a bar,
- 14:14Speaker 3: or a club or anywhere else and not hear lmfao
- 14:18Speaker 3: the rest of that crew, Dirt, Nasty, Mickey Avalon, Little John.
- 14:23Speaker 3: It was just party music. It was designed to distract
- 14:26Speaker 3: from the fact that none of us were going to
- 14:28Speaker 3: get the opportunities you thought we were gonna have. You
- 14:30Speaker 3: and I canna have a house and I can have
- 14:31Speaker 3: much money. You might as well have a good time.
- 14:32Speaker 3: So that's what we did. We partied, You had fun.
- 14:35Speaker 3: We were probably too old to still be partying, but
- 14:37Speaker 3: there was little else that we could do with a
- 14:38Speaker 3: little money that we still had. So I think that's
- 14:41Speaker 3: an interesting example. Love to hear your thoughts on that
- 14:44Speaker 3: love the show.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Rock and Roller nine incredible answer. I love it, super thoughtful.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I love the way you laid it out, and I
- 14:51Speaker 1: can attest I was there during that time. You were
- 14:53Speaker 1: absolutely right out on MFAO. That song was everywhere, and
- 14:57Speaker 1: it did capture the feeling of that moment that you
- 15:01Speaker 1: that you just so well articulated. It's interesting you said,
- 15:07Speaker 1: you know, as a millennial. I'm not a millennial of
- 15:09Speaker 1: Gen X, but I do remember that moment, and I
- 15:11Speaker 1: was in a sort of a at that time in
- 15:13Speaker 1: my life was sort of prolonged adolescents and you know,
- 15:16Speaker 1: kind of acting like a like a dirt bag and
- 15:18Speaker 1: doing things I probably was too old to be doing
- 15:20Speaker 1: at that time. And it's funny you say, as a millennial,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you you you weren't going to have the opportunities to
- 15:28Speaker 1: do the things that you were promised.
- 15:29Speaker 2: And I just had this thought.
- 15:30Speaker 1: You know, in gen X, we weren't promised shit. We
- 15:33Speaker 1: just came at it like we weren't going to get anything.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And I think millennials had a much different upbringing with
- 15:39Speaker 1: their parents where they were sort of you guys kind
- 15:41Speaker 1: of grew up on padded playgrounds and you know that
- 15:44Speaker 1: sort of thing.
- 15:44Speaker 2: But hey, I'm not judging. I love you. I'm married
- 15:46Speaker 2: to one of you, So there we go.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Love the call, Thank you, nine one six sort of
- 15:50Speaker 1: on point with that same sort of on theme with that,
- 15:52Speaker 1: with that answer of mine there and that that voicemail
- 15:55Speaker 1: we just heard from the caller. I want to go
- 15:57Speaker 1: to this voicemail from the nine one seven from Martha,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and now this this is she's talking about Winona from
- 16:02Speaker 1: a couple of weeks back, but it's still apropole of
- 16:04Speaker 1: the discussion we're having right here. This is the nine
- 16:06Speaker 1: to one seven, Martha. This is Marta calling from.
- 16:10Speaker 4: The four o four, even though my phone starts with
- 16:14Speaker 4: a nine one seven s New York City. I love
- 16:18Speaker 4: your podcast. I actually have to tell you that I
- 16:21Speaker 4: started listening to it because of some collaboration that you
- 16:25Speaker 4: did with Payne Lindsay. I am a huge fan of
- 16:28Speaker 4: both of you, and I hope too soon also run
- 16:31Speaker 4: into you the same way that I ran into pain In.
- 16:35Speaker 4: One of the reasons that I frequent the most airport
- 16:38Speaker 4: is I have a bone to pick with you. I'm
- 16:41Speaker 4: an ex gen generation and I love when I'm a writer,
- 16:49Speaker 4: and I cannot believe that you did not mention Reality Bites,
- 16:54Speaker 4: the movie that made us always think of our choices
- 16:57Speaker 4: of going to college and get a degree. I have
- 17:01Speaker 4: plenty of those, but keep it up. I love and
- 17:06Speaker 4: thank you.
- 17:07Speaker 3: You have to talk to me so much.
- 17:10Speaker 4: I believe that one of your best episodes is the
- 17:12Speaker 4: Hillsborough accidents, which.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Made me go back to.
- 17:17Speaker 4: The entire history of it. I love it, Thank you,
- 17:21Speaker 4: keep it up.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Bye bye, Martha, thank you so much for the call. Yeah,
- 17:26Speaker 2: I can't believe. Are you sure I didn't mention reality bites?
- 17:29Speaker 2: I mean I do.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I do kind of whiff sometimes, so you know, as possible.
- 17:34Speaker 1: But that movie is incredible and it might be uh,
- 17:37Speaker 1: it might be one of his most definitely her most
- 17:41Speaker 1: gen X. God, if I didn't mention that, I'm sorry.
- 17:44Speaker 1: You're right to call me out on that, Martha. And
- 17:46Speaker 1: you mentioned rethinking the choices in college, and that's why
- 17:51Speaker 1: I wanted to play that because it goes directly directly
