- 0:00Speaker: Welcome to the Refrigeration Mentor Podcast. As always, I love having you here, chatting, learning, growing together. I wanna dive into the Refrigeration Mentor Playbook. I really wanna show you what we do to really help you. Refrigeration mentor's, all about training, education and mentorship, and really helping you get to your next level.
- 0:01Working by yourself days on end maybe no support on the back end. You're a phone call away. I've been there and I've talked to many people who have great coaches and great mentors, which is awesome too. So I hope you have those as well. And over the years as I found and learned about coaches and mentors that's really where it took my career to the next level.
- 0:02You're going to train, what do you need to teach your company and the technicians? Like, what field are you in? Are you doing supermarket refrigeration? Are you doing supermarket, CO2 refrigeration? Which is different. Are you doing commercial refrigeration? Are you doing commercial hvac? To me, it doesn't really matter, but you gotta have an idea of.
- 0:03Problem in a different way and came up with a solution that solved the problem in a different way to get the same result that equipment working. Again, the, the problems that were you were having or the fine tuning be being able to work again, and this is what's really important. It's that, that first step, what, what do you want to train?
- 0:04We wanna, we wanna lift. Their knowledge, lift their confidence and, and boost their skills. That's, that's our goal. And in the refrigeration mentor programs, depending on if it's a four or six, eight, a 12 week or a consistent monthly training, we really have goals set for the technicians. So that's a f.
- 0:05And same if you're doing, say, a supermarket training. You need to know the rack manufacturer. You need to know every component. That is on that, that rack controllers com, mechanical components. You need to know all that stuff. So you need to have that base. This engineering is the huge, huge development.
- 0:06'cause that's so, so important when you now can understand the flow, understand the theory behind where it goes and why it goes. And you gotta build around this. This is what we do is we build around each one of these different programs, especially when we're doing a customized training for a contractor or for, end users, we or manufacturers, 'cause we do all these different types of trainings, is that we want to understand where it's going, that the fundamentals of it. Then we get that electrical drawing and then we in, we build off that. So we continue to build onto this training program. So, we'll, we will have short quizzes, we'll watch videos of, of this stuff that really.
- 0:07But this is the playbook on how we set this up. The next step is getting the refrigeration schedule. We really know in the supermarket you really know. What are those design conditions and criteria? How is that store supposed to be running in the first place? A lot of the time over the years, I struggled with understanding what normal was for a system.
- 0:08So then you need to understand that. And lastly, the next thing is the input output list. When you understand all the inputs and outputs in this system, that's where you're gonna get the upper hand because a lot of things a lot of people struggle with is the controls. And if you spend time on it and you teach your, your team on how to properly navigate, how to properly look for something, that's where the game changer is.
- 0:09'cause a lot of the alarms are really coming from some sort of input or output. That's it. Because that's what these controllers are taking. They're taking all this information, they are extrapolating the data, and then they're spitting out information to us as the technic. So when you're, when you're building this or creating these programs, you really want to have these foundation p foundational pieces in place.
- 0:10And this is, this is real. Game changer. This is the playbook, is having these different documents. So when you understand how that's equipment was built, how it's supposed to run, normally you can go troubleshoot anything and this really is what builds a lot of confidence in the technicians that come in to the refrigeration mentor program or the contractors.
- 0:11It's not, not everyone, not all the technicians, and, and that that'll be fair. They come and they ask me too, is like, who is improving? Who do you feel is not participating or, or being there? So we can adjust our, our who we put in there because really what we're looking for is. To change. We're looking to help a technician take their career to the next level with these programs and really help the business grow.
- 0:12Like they're growing. They're actually be, they're becoming a lead technician, or they're in a, a service manager role now from that course, and they're firing on all cylinder. They're, they're motivating the other guys to do a better job of why they should do a better job and what to expect when the company's growth is happening, because that's what it's all about.
- 0:13I get emails and say like these, this guy's on fire right now. And it's, it is because of the training they did that they took, and it's showing that you, this, this playbook and, and one of the big things in refrigeration, we care, we care about the technicians. So that is one of the big things is when you're building these programs or these trainings for your company, you gotta care.
- 0:14They're messaging me on social media. They're texting me or emailing me. I was like, I got one on the weekend from my good friend Steven. He's taken all our courses. He is like, Trevor, I just solved the problem. You weren't here, but it's because of the training that I've taken with you. And that's, that's such an amazing feeling.
- 0:15And it's, it's really, it's not me, it's them. It's them. They help me build the program. 'cause I'm asking 'em the questions like, where, what, what rack? Who's rack is it? It doesn't really matter to me whose rack it is because if we get back down to that, that engineering the fundamentals behind it, we get into the manuals of that, that manufacturer, and then I can pick out some, some key questions that I look through a sequence of operation, of a manual and I get in there and then I ask them, okay, what's the sequence of operation?
- 0:16Should four compressors be running right now or three compressors, or should all five be running? That's a big deal. 'cause if all five are running and they shouldn't be running, why? What is going on? And this is the things that we dive in that that could be a good example that that suction filters plugged on one of the compressors.
- 0:17And so for me, it's on the results. Continue to go to manufactured training. They're, they're great. They're gonna help out, and they're gonna, they're, you know, every little bit of knowledge is gonna grow. My thing is that I stay, I want to know about the, that technician weekly, following up, finding out how they're doing, having my team reach out to them to see if they, they were able to get to the field to finish that assignment.
- 0:18Technician took away because like I said earlier, you're gonna have experienced technicians, you're gonna have mid-level, and then you're gonna have new technicians and they're all gonna be needing something different. But I like building programs around that because they can feed off each other and they can help each other grow.
- 0:19This year is another assignment that we put in a, a different program, depending on the program that we're running, but just getting them to really understand how the system works and operates normally, and that's where there's huge, huge results. And I And why? I tell you though, like people are like, well, why?
- 0:20That that's one of the big. Things that refrigeration meant. We want you to, we need you to do it out there safely. You have to go home to your family safe. Do not be cutting corners. It takes longer to do it safe. It takes longer to do it right, but that's okay. You should be okay with that. And even if you get reamed out by a, a customer or by a manager or a.
- 0:21That we have. So each one of those will, you'll have to fine tune that playbook on how you're gonna teach these technicians. 'cause some are more visual learners versus audio learners versus hands-on learners. And it's just different percentage. We all learn with those those three key pillars, kinesthetic, audio, visual, but the three, those three key pillars, and I implement all of that in my program.
- 0:22CO2 refrigeration, commercial refrigeration. And that's a, a bit of the playbook, you know? Now go and put this into the practice. This does take time. You're going to have to talk with your team. You're gonna have to talk with the technicians. You're going to have to help grow. But if this is something you're interested in, you're looking for more help in, in building these programs for your business, reach out to me info@refrigerationmentor.com.
- 0:23Yeah, reach out and I'd love to talk more about the playbook and how we can help you grow your company, grow your team, because this is what it is. Uplifting the technician, uplifting the industry. Helping those customers out. Building a strong culture in your business. That's what it's all about. And if you're a technician out there and you're looking to to do this for your company, reach out because I want to help you.
- 0:24And that is what's amazing to see. And I consist, I consistently am surprised at different companies or technicians who come to these programs and just smash it outta the park and just take their careers to a whole new level. Hopefully you took a few things away from this session. This is, this is just awesome to have a conversation with you.
