- 0:00When your van dies 500 miles from the biggest show of your
- 0:04life, there's a story behind that.
- 0:07This is your daily message from Chad #1153 to upgrade your
- 0:11mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:14Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:16yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:18Ernie Russell. You can get a free copy of my
- 0:20book, The Most Powerful Story in the World, by going to from
- 0:23chad.gumroad.com. The transcript of this message
- 0:26and hundreds of others are always available at www.from
- 0:29Chad dot dot com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:32You may think you have nothing to offer, but upgraded thinking
- 0:34knows the keys in your pocket might be enough.
- 0:37Here's the story. A Detroit metal band called the
- 0:41Autumn Kings had just finished a set at Rockfest in Wisconsin
- 0:45last month. July 16th through the 18th. 3
- 0:48guys, 1 van and a schedule. Their next show was the Upheaval
- 0:52Festival in Grand Rapids, MI, 500 miles away, the biggest gig
- 0:56of their career. Then their engine died on a
- 1:00rural highway. A tow couldn't help them.
- 1:03The repair would take two days. They had about 10 hours.
- 1:06Cars went flying past them as they stood on the side of the
- 1:09road. Out of options.
- 1:11Then one didn't. A man in a 60s named Ernie
- 1:15pulled over in his SUV. He listened to three strangers
- 1:18explain an impossible math problem.
- 1:21And then he did something almost nobody does.
- 1:23He handed them the keys to his Redford Explorer.
- 1:26No collateral, no contract, no, let me think about it, a vehicle
- 1:31he owned by one account for three days, and he let three men
- 1:34he'd known for three minutes drive off toward Michigan.
- 1:38They made the show. Guitarist Jake Diab called it
- 1:41the greatest performance of their lives.
- 1:43They put over 1000 miles on the SUV and brought it back to
- 1:46Ernie, safe and sound. When they asked Ernie why he did
- 1:50it, he simply said he'd never met a live band before and he
- 1:53just wanted to help. That's it.
- 1:55That's the whole reason Ernie didn't have a big explanation.
- 1:58He had keys and he had a yes. His key solved a big problem for
- 2:03broken down band. You keep waiting to be the kind
- 2:08of person who changes someone's day.
- 2:10You think you need more? More money, more time, more
- 2:13standing. Ernie had a used SUV in a soft
- 2:17spot for three tired strangers and it became the reason their
- 2:20career didn't stall on the shoulder of a Rd.
- 2:23Better story to tell yourself is what's in my hand is enough to
- 2:27help somebody today. Tell me a story of unexpected
- 2:31kindness to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 2:34Send someone a text and ask them who handed you the keys when you
- 2:38were stuck.
