- Lucas: Ciao, Luna! Welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo. Luna: Ciao, Lucas! I'm excited for today's episode. We've been learning so much about train stations lately. Lucas: Right! In the last few episodes, we covered buying tickets and asking about departures. Today, we're going to focus on something every traveler needs: finding the right platform. Luna: Oh, that's so useful. I remember getting a bit lost in Rome, looking for the right track. Lucas: Exactly. So the key phrase is: Qual è il binario? Luna: Qual è il binario? Lucas: That's perfect. It means 'Which is the platform?' in Italian. Let's break it down: 'Qual è' means 'which is', and 'il binario' means 'the platform'. So, Qual è il binario? Luna: Qual è il binario? Got it. So I can ask: Qual è il binario per il treno per Firenze? Lucas: Yes! Exactly. And a common response you'll hear is: Il binario è quello là. Luna: Il binario è quello là. That sounds like 'The platform is that one over there.' Lucas: Precisely. 'Quello là' means 'that one over there'. So if someone points and says that, you know where to go. Luna: Okay, let me practice: Il binario è quello là. Lucas: Perfetto! Now, another useful one is when you know the platform number: Il binario numero 5. Luna: Il binario numero 5. So I can say 'Il treno per Venezia parte dal binario numero 5'. Lucas: Esattamente! That's excellent. And if you need to politely ask for directions to a specific platform, you can say: Scusi, dov'è il binario 3? Luna: Scusi, dov'è il binario 3? 'Scusi' is 'excuse me', right? Lucas: Exactly. It's a polite way to get someone's attention. So, Scusi, dov'è il binario 3? — 'Excuse me, where is platform 3?' Luna: Scusi, dov'è il binario 3? I like that. So let's say I'm at the station in Milan and I need platform 7. I'd ask: Scusi, dov'è il binario 7? Lucas: Yes! And the person might point and say: Il binario è quello là. Or if it's a specific number: Il binario numero 7. Luna: Great. Now let's imagine a little conversation. I walk up to a station employee and ask: Scusi, qual è il binario per il treno per Napoli? Lucas: And I, as the employee, reply: Il binario è quello là, il numero 4. Luna: Il binario numero 4. Grazie! And then I find my platform. And the answer might be: Il binario è quello là. Lucas: Perfetto. Now let's do a quick recap. We have four phrases today: Qual è il binario? — Which is the platform? Il binario è quello là. — The platform is that one over there. Il binario numero 5. — Platform number 5. Scusi, dov'è il binario 3? — Excuse me, where is platform 3? Luna: That's a great set.
