Transcript
- Nathan Hawthorne: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to a special episode of KYP breaking down week three. My name's Nathan Hawthorne. This is Jared McEnroy. What are the Giants doing? What are you doing trading a fifth round pick to get JJ McCarthy? Your season is already a wash. Jack Jackson Dart injured for the year. Brian Burns injured for the year. You're gonna bring in JJ McCarthy to do what? Figure out if he has any gas in the tank to play? If he plays even moderately well, you've only ruled out Jackson Dart for the regular season. Hinting, if we make the playoffs, he might be available. For what? For what purpose? You own your first three picks next year, rounds one through three. So if you just tank, if you just slide this year, you're in a position, not only if you want to get a quarterback to actually get rid of Dart, can you do that? But then you have the opportunity to go and get yourself a weapon. Did you know Jeremiah Smith is out there? If you just tank, you have the opportunity to actually go out and get a weapon, get a new quarterback, whatever you want to do. Instead, you're committing to JJ McCarthy, you're bringing chaos into the room. You're threatening Jackson Dart. And by the way, Matt Nagy is your coordinator. The last time he was even halfway decent as a coordinator, not with Patrick Mahomes, was with Mitchell Trubisky. And what happened to Trubisky? That offense got figured out, and Nagy is still running the same offense. All he does is design plays for the ball to go exactly somewhere. There's no there's no, if it doesn't go here, I have this on the backside. And it got carried by Mahomes, but you're gonna ask JJ McCarthy. If the look's not there to try and figure out what to do next, JJ McCarthy doesn't have that kind of processing ability. We've already seen that. JJ McCarthy has a decent arm, but you don't have a run game. You only got what 60 yards with Cam Scadaboo against the Titans, who were giving up 120 some odd yards a game on the ground. I it does the situation doesn't make sense. You're threatening the guy that you feel like you want to commit to. There's no incentive to even give up a fifth round pick for JJ McCarthy. He's probably not gonna play well. And if he does, again, all you're doing is rocking the boat in New York. Just stick with a veteran. H bring in anybody else. Anyone other than somebody who's gonna threaten what the plan is for next year. Cause do you plan to move on from Jackson? I I rest my case. Sorry we had to get started so hot. I just I it it came out of me. It it came out of me. I just I just it Jarod McInroy: Wake up, America. We're here. This episode is alive. We're already into it. Listen. Nathan Hawthorne: doesn't make sense. And I know if you're John Harbaugh, you don't want Jarod McInroy: I hear ya. Nathan Hawthorne: to lose the locker room your first year. But give it up. Malik Neighbors isn't going to be healthy this year. Give it up. Stop. Jarod McInroy: Hey, hey, pause, pause, pause, pause. You hey hey. Listen, you got your point across. I hear ya. Nathan Hawthorne: I'm not done. No, all right. All right. Jarod McInroy: Here's the deal. With the quarterback position in particular, I will never be mad at taking a swing. I know you think we already know about J. We probably do already know about JJ McCarthy. We probably know everything. However, if you're planning on some people's some GMs like to draft a quarterback every year, some like to do it every other year, whatever it may be. Maybe they don't like their fifth round choice next year. And maybe they think this is a very top heavy QB draft. So if we give one up now, we'll get him. We're two and one. They're they're two and one at this point in time. you know, not a terrible start to the season. There's a lot of promising things happening. I see why they did it. I don't love it personally. I don't think it's gonna help them. I don't think it's gonna propel them forward the way they think it's going to. I don't think Jacksonart thinks of it as a QB battle, but if he comes in and plays really well, then it might be. but that's a really good problem to have. If I mean, if you're a GM Nathan Hawthorne: If you Jarod McInroy: today, if you have two quarterbacks that really are showing that they can play winning football, that what about that is a bad thing? Nathan Hawthorne: If you have two quarterbacks, you don't have a quarterback. That's a tale as old as time in the NFL. Jarod McInroy: Okay. Okay. I disagree, bro. I'd rather have but I would rather have two than Nathan Hawthorne: 'Cause then you sp then you split the locker room. Jarod McInroy: none. I'd rather have two than none. So Okay. Either Nathan Hawthorne: I would rather have none because I'm tanking and I have a first round pick. You feel me? Jarod McInroy: way, your point still stands. I I'm just trying to play devil's ad advocate here. I I agree with you. They don't know what they're doing. But I don't think this is in and maybe maybe it'll prove to be a Terrible, terrible decision that'll set them back for years to come. But if you have a chance to get somebody who has just drafted what 11 for a fifth rounder, might as well go test it, see if you can spin it a bit. And worst case scenario, now you have him. Let's say he plays incredible. You flip him for a third or fourth rounder. Who knows? Who knows? Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. And here's the deal, JJ McCarthy could very well be a solid quarterback. And when I say solid, I mean just not the bottom two guys. He's gonna be the twenty-fifth best quarterback at his best. Now he's gonna have games where he looks better, just like every quarterback does. But if you're looking for a guy who can consistently read, diagnose, make the play, throw the ball to the right spot, he's proven he can't do that with interceptions. Jarod McInroy: It's not none. Nathan Hawthorne: And then and then you've also then you've also got his injury history, him pulling himself out of games, him not wanting to play in the final preseason game, like him being shipped off from Minnesota was not necessarily a hundred percent about his play. There was something in that locker room that KOC and company just did not like. Cause you don't ship off a first for a fifth a couple years later. A guy who was in a QB battle. It's so it's it was personal. In fact, it was know your personnel. Get him out of here. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. All Nathan Hawthorne: Anyways, that's gonna a hot start to the episode. This is again supposed Jarod McInroy: right. They wan Hey, this is Nathan Hawthorne: to be a week three recap. And it is. Jarod McInroy: And it is, and it is. The the the Giants, they won a game, a gritty game against a really bad team. And now for whatever reason they feel good about it. so y like I said, grand scheme of things, they're two and one. We'll see how the season progresses for them. But I want to jump over to a different quarterback, if you don't mind for a second. Nathan Hawthorne: You put up twelve points aga you put up twelve points against the Titans. What do we Yeah, they gave up twelve points. You just prove it Alright. Jarod McInroy: but Robert Salah's defense, bro, they're so good stop. Yeah. but anyways, jumping over to the Steelers for a second. I want to talk about this game with the Bengals. When your run game is good, it helps a whole lot, man. This is just this is this is proof to a T. Jalen Warren got going on the ground. They really found the run. he had a couple a couple pretty big runs as well. but Rogers is just proven he's not gonna be able to carry you when that run game isn't working. So big win, huge win. However, I will say Take it with the grain of salt because you are supposed to beat your division rivals on your home game. You have to split with your division at this is a bare minimum thing. Split with your division rivals and do it at home. I'm not gonna read into the win too much. I still think it's gonna be a stinker of a season, but if we're talking about good things and good signs of things to come, putting up 30 points on a really good defense, Aaron Rodgers looked really good again because he had the run game support. and he he was finding targets all over the field. He threw for almost three hundred yards. So yeah, hats off to them and and and that's a really big one and a great step in the right direction. But there's still a lot that needs to be done with the Steelers team. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, after a really shaky offense the first two weeks, I was impressed, especially the way Jalen Warren ran the football. I've never seen him as a you know, a bell cow back, but he had what, north of eighteen carries? I think he crossed into that twenty mark. That was great to see him, even without having Rico Dowdle, who we thought maybe would take over that backfield. but the the craziest thing to me is Aaron Rodgers, six players had more than one catch. When does Aaron Rodgers ever throw to more than two guys ever? And so that tells me Aaron Rodgers, I don't know if this was just a a weird one game script again, where the run game actually worked. So he was just getting rid of the football. But I I loved to see that. He's like, hey, I gotta throw the ball to somebody, and his interception went right off the hands of Roman Wilson. So I I feel really good about the way Aaron Rodgers is distributing the football to more than just DK Metcalf or Michael Pittman. And also if I'm Mike McCarthy, I am going to keep throwing the ball to Darnell Washington. Just keep doing it. I know he doesn't have the same speed as a Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, you know, all these elite pass catching tight ends. But if you get the ball in his hands, you're not tackling him. He just cannot be tackled. So I'd be looking for more ways to work him in, having him and Pat Fryermouth as targets. I mean, again, we talked about two tight end sets with Clint Kubiak. I'm not going to steal your thunder. You've got something special set aside for that. But these two tight end sets, you get two good ones. it it can be a nightmare for defenses to defend. You can run the ball, you can pass the ball. It's it's special. So I think this Steelers Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: offense is gonna start to hit a bit of a stride here and Bengals Jarod McInroy: It's a good loss. It's a it's one of those games where it it the other team came out and beat you. You didn't do a whole lot to shoot yourself in the foot. Joe Burrow, twenty eight for thirty seven and three touchdowns. Like he looks as sharp as he ever has. Like, Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Jarod McInroy: I I think there's a lot of really, really good things happening over there in in Cincinnati. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, but the the what happened is they just didn't have it in the fourth. You know, you had that three and out and then you had the fumble and that killed the game. atypical from Burrow to give up a fumble like that, I should say, in the in the fourth quarter, but I saw sat something about Joe. He's hasn't won a game where he's trailed in the in the fourth quarter with eight minutes to go. I need to validate that one maybe. Jarod McInroy: That's surprising. Nathan Hawthorne: But it is it that surprising though? They definitely like to they they definitely they definitely like to play Jarod McInroy: Joe Shisty is as cold as it as cold as they come. Nathan Hawthorne: with the lead. Yep, he's got a great PR team. He's had a great PR team. Now he's he's an excellent quarterback. I'm no shade of Joe Shisey. Great guy. Jarod McInroy: I I I'm excited for them this year. I they're exactly what we thought they were gonna be. but if they're going to be a Super Bowl contending team, those are the games you have to pull out. Again, don't read into it too much. It's a division rival. Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: Nobody knows them better than the Steelers do. so is what it is, but it was a good game nonetheless. Jumping over to a team that needs to be what whatever the exact opposite of of Three touchdowns, really efficient quarterback play. The Texans are in trouble, man. They they're they're just in trouble. And it's not even just just passing the football. They only had 70 total rushing yards on the for the entire team. Devin Montgomery led the team with 33 rushing yards. and then on top of that, in a game like this, how is Stroud still only throwing the ball 27 times? Like w the This was this was just terrible. Only like 220 total yards of offense. they look lost. They don't they don't look like they got a clue of what's going on on the offensive side of the field. And I know you want to blame Nick Cayley and this whole thing. And I know you're probably gonna continue to do so, but nonetheless, you're an OC. You gotta be able to do something. Like Nathan Hawthorne: So something, something. But here's the problem is the Texans are in danger of becoming the twenty twenty one to twenty twenty five Steelers, a very good defense, and then you have a just dumb deaf building to offense. You have no idea what's going on. Does anybody in that building know what good offense looks like? Anybody? Somebody, please raise your hand and tell me what good offense looks like. Cause whatever they're doing is not it. You scored against the Bills week one. That's fine. You got the run game going. No development. No additions, no new wrinkles. Again, the two offenses that we see struggling aggressive this year with more than capable quarterbacks, by the way. New England and the Texans. Okay. Nick Cayley comes from the Josh McDaniel system. Josh McDaniel system, old, archaic, no new wrinkles, and it just flat out sucks. Okay. You've got people on mainstream media today talking about this Texans defense being underwhelming. They held Jonathan Taylor to 68 yards on 23 carries. Jonathan Taylor's been eating on everybody this year, and he will eat on everybody this year. And you're gonna start looking at the Texans defense like they're no good. Please, this defense was designed to attack and slaughter you once you just had a a seven to ten point lead, but they can't even score seven to ten points. This is just, again, it's tone-deaf offense. It lacks any level of creativity. And it's disappointing to see this for the last three years and again committing to another year with Nick Cayley. I don't know when Demico Ryans is going to fire him, but he is in danger of losing his job because he can't get somebody in the building who understands offense. I don't know what loyalty he has and I I appreciate loyalty, but you've got to change something. And the Colts, you guys are just lucky to escape with a win. I don't know, you know, I'm I'm Jarod McInroy: That's facts. Nathan Hawthorne: fired up today. But they're lucky to escape with the win. I do love the way that I do love the way that Daniel Jones distributed the football though, despite Jonathan Taylor not having a great day on the ground. Josh Downs is a weapon. I but yeah, I I'm not gonna sure. Jarod McInroy: I'll I'll interject also before we get too into the weeds of the Colts. speaking on the Texans defense, if their offense could just put up 21 points, they would be two and one right now, and they would be at least like headed in the right direction. Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: the average score of an NFL game last year was 23 points. So you just have to be average on offense, and you would be two and one right now. You yes, you put up 31 points. Again, I put I said it in the video earlier. The Bills will give up 30 points to anyone who asks nicely. Like the this that's nothing. Nathan Hawthorne: Ha ha. Jarod McInroy: That means nothing to me. and yes, your defense gave up 36 because that Bill's offense is extremely potent. It's one of the best in the NFL, if not the best in the NFL. yeah, Texans are in real, real trouble, man. I don't I don't know if we need to harp on it too much more than that. any any final remarks? Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, Texans are in trouble. their schedule I don't think gets much easier the rest of the way. the Colts I also think are in trouble. Again, you got lucky escaping Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: with this win. you've got some winnable games, Commander, Steelers, Titans coming up. Then you got the Vikings, Jags, Cowboys. And then you got the Dolphins and Texans again. And then the close tier season, Bengals, Browns, Jaguars. So Jarod McInroy: I don't like their chances this year, man. A lot of people don't aren't out on them yet. I I Nathan Hawthorne: I don't I don't like their chances. This is No and Jarod McInroy: I started the season out on them. I I I have not been bought into them coming back and and making that step in this division. And I do think the Texans will write the ship. I don't know when it's gonna be, but it at this point it's the Jags. The Jags are the division clear division winner. Division Nathan Hawthorne: Clear. And the Jarod McInroy: leader, rather, but still like they're the clear division leader at this point in time. I feel like that's Nathan Hawthorne: Leader, I'm and I'm comfortable saying that they're gonna end up with the most wins. I I I think so. And my pick was Jarod McInroy: Yeah. It's probably true, actually. Nathan Hawthorne: going to be the Texans. And again, we said this in that AFC Cell video. If the Texans could just have an average offense, we said it out loud, they would be Jarod McInroy: So Nathan Hawthorne: great, but but they don't have it. And the Colts, we talked about potentially trading Jonathan Taylor, maybe time to move on. I don't know. Something's not Jarod McInroy: Do it. Nathan Hawthorne: right. I don't know if it's chained psychic or the offense. But yeah, let's move on. I feel like we've kinda gotta Well yeah, I'm I feel like I'm I'm recognizing Jarod McInroy: Well let's jump over to the Jags while while we're while we're right here. Let's let's get into Nathan Hawthorne: a theme here with these with these teams. Like it's kinda like teams that have now we'll we'll get into that later. Let's just let's just talk about the Jags. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, listen, the offense continues to improve. but the defense needs to follow suit, man. They what I will say, yes, he had two takeaways this week. That's huge. That's a great step in the right direction against a bad offense right now and a struggling quarterback who we're we can only assume was actually crying on the sideline this weekend, which was not a good look. that Patriots video that we released on our Instagram. is really looking good these days. And I hope all of those commenters come with nothing but remorse calling you a non-ball knower saying just such mean things to you. we Nathan Hawthorne: I know what I saw. I know what I saw with Jake May. Jarod McInroy: all know what we saw. but there seems to be a really clear identity forming on offense for the Jaguars and I love it. I'm excited for it. They're headed in a great direction. The run game is still not convincing me. but Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: man Trevor Lawrence is here to play. Is this is this his official like has he arrived? Is this gonna be the season that we're finally like Trevor Lawrence delivered on everything he promised? Nathan Hawthorne: I I think it is. And what I love to see is they're body slamming the bad teams. They beat up the Browns. They beat up the Patriots. Browns might be a little better than we think. And then you played the Broncos tough. The Broncos just got hot in that second half, which they tend to do. It's amazing. But you've you've looked good this year. Your defense is more than capable. Their offense, this reminds me of what Liam Cohn was doing with the Buccaneers. Your run game is a little bit more gadgety mixed with those quick short game passes. So it's not really something that he puts a ton of emphasis on, but you get later in the year, you have a few bad weather games. You're gonna need to be able to tote the rock consistently. It is maybe starting to develop. Tootin looks like he's starting to get a little bit more comfortable, but I think you're right. They're gonna have to learn to run the rock more consistently. Patriots, I think, are in a free fall right now. Drake May, you're running out of time to change my mind. the arm looks weak as described, and the decision making looks a lot worse, I think, than we all anticipated. I don't know how we write the ship here in terms of getting him you know, getting his brain functioning correctly, but goodness gracious, that offense looks horrible. I think it's a combo of both McDaniel and it's and Drake May here. but yeah, and that win again, Jags are doing what they need to do. They're body slamming the bad teams, they're looking good and beating good teams, and yeah, they they've got a strong wide receiver core. You know, with Parker Washington, Jacoby Myers, Brian Thomas Jr., I'll roll that out any day of the week. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: so it's impressive. I love what Liam Cohen's doing. And again, identity. Identity, identity. They got it. Jarod McInroy: That's all that matters, honestly. Like when when you look lost out there, it's it's really tough to win games. Everybody has to have a role. and and it seems like that it that is the case there. Here's what I we were gonna jump into the Bills Chargers game. is that something you're interested in talking about, or should we just have we harped on both of those teams enough and we move on? Nathan Hawthorne: Well, here's what I will here's what I will say about the about the my gosh, the Bills. I was loving the hate watch because you know how I feel about the Bills being fraudulent. And they do this. Every single year they look, you know, like they can't be beat, and then they just come out and play awful against a team that's kind of struggling. We've seen it year after year. But what they did this year is they dug it out. And I'm impressed with that. And I don't want to hear another person say Josh Allen doesn't have help because James Cook is the only reason you were able to stay in that game with a hundred and fifty four yards rushing. I again and two QB sneaks for Josh Allen's touchdowns to pad his stats. Go ahead and give those to James Cook. All right. He deserves better. But I get I I understand it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Make sure you score the points. I so that's Jarod McInroy: Yeah. I hate seeing a team run the ball three times and get stopped. Like that that's it's that's that's tough. Get the points. Nathan Hawthorne: And you can't you can't you can't stop the Josh Allen sneak. So can so keep doing it. But I just I do feel bad for James Cook or anybody. I see them go down at the one yard line. I'm like, man, that sucks for you. this this is something interesting I saw with the Chargers though. And we've talked about the how complicated this Mike McDaniels offense is. They use motion on 73% of snaps, but the player in motion is getting the ball only five percent of the time. I mean, you guys, Jarod McInroy: Yep. Nathan Hawthorne: you're right, it's the it's the smoke and mirrors. But it turns out every NFL defense has Modern Warfare 2 thermal scopes on and they're seeing right through the smoke. If I can ignore the motion guy because I know he's actually not getting the ball and borderline take him out of the play, that allows me to defend everything else better. You've called it out, Mike McDaniel's great or Mike McDaniel, great play designer, not a great play caller. And I think that with his plays, they can take so long to develop and everything has to move and be set up in the perfect place, which is great. For you know that third and eight call that you need in the fourth quarter in that one that you're stashing, but on a consistent play, and you've got a guy like Herbert, who with Kellen Moore was throwing the ball 40, 50 times a game, just let him drop back and sling the rock. I know that they have struggles dropping, but I promise if you just keep the ball in the air enough and then you make those safeties and linebackers drop back a little bit, you're gonna create space for Amari and Hampton. I would I thought we were gonna see a more conservative McDaniel and a more simplified McDaniel. being paired up with Harbaugh, that's not what we've seen. so again, shout out yeah, sh yeah. Jarod McInroy: I let me jump in here for a minute. First off, the he's too conservative in a way that's it's it's he's trying to outthink the other team at all times. And he's again, he won't be aggressive, he won't throw the ball past the sticks. He you even you even said it yourself, he's getting they're getting it five percent of the time, the the man in motion. In the clip I posted today, Keaton Mitchell finally gets the ball. He's the man in motion. The other team looked lost because they know what's happening. They're like, my God, they actually gave the Nathan Hawthorne: It my gosh He got the ball. Jarod McInroy: ball to him and they scored. Look what happens. Look what happens when they do throw the ball past the sticks consistently. Again, you have to get in a rhythm. It's not just a throwing rhythm. I hate the people that say, quarterback needs to continue to throw slant slant route after slant route after check down. That's how you get him going in the game. That is not how it works. Go watch the Cowboys offense and see what Dak does with CD and with George Pickens and with Jake Ferguson and all these people to get going because it is not the same thing. They throw the ball downfield, they throw it past the sticks, they give their playmakers a chance to do something. the Nathan Hawthorne: No but Jarod McInroy: Chargers just don't have those playmakers to throw the ball at an eight yard route to get 10 yards. They don't have the people that can do that. That's a very Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: specific player to make you miss. That's a JSN, that's a Jamar Chase, that's a Justin Jefferson. Like, You don't have any of those people. Now you do have Ladd McConkey. He's still proven he can't do that after the catch. It's I Nathan Hawthorne: Just too light. Jarod McInroy: I again I don't want to go in too much on these guys. I do want to say one thing about the Bills. Come out a lot hotter. Come out and just punch people in the mouth. You like there's no reason not to. And I get it, you want to feed James Cook, and that's what gets the rest of the offense going. Continue to do that, but like you just come out with more energy because the Chargers were in that game for far too long. And again, it was a game that they felt like they were in control. Very similar to week one against the Texans. They felt like they were in control the whole game, but I Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, and Jarod McInroy: digress. Nathan Hawthorne: yeah, and with the with the Chargers too, the Bills, it's a game at home. You think the Chargers are reeling, but the Chargers, you know, on they were saying they had their best week of practice. They had to come out and fight. Even if the coaches didn't put together a good game plan, there there seemed to be a little bit more, for lack of better term, give a shit out there on that Chargers on that Chargers sideline. So if we see more of that, some things get coached up, you know, you're not gonna have the the AFC championship season, you know, we were talking about, but you might be able to sneak into the playoffs or just not have this thing completely fall apart. So, again, Jarod McInroy: Good luck. Nathan Hawthorne: shout out shout out to the Bills for reining it in on games that we've seen them loose before. And then Chargers can't let those games slip and you you've got to find your firm footing before th this continues to just go downhill. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Ravens Cowboys. Wow. I I got something to start this one off. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, hit me. Jarod McInroy: What a horrible way to end that game. because honestly, like it when you have these gritty games against really good teams, this is exactly what I've said. Good teams have to be other good teams. and they they were in it the whole time. They're on that terrible field. It was kind of weird how both teams were playing. it almost felt like they were in like a mud game. Like nobody wanted to make a cut because they saw people going down with injury. Like it was very, it was very interesting. Just in terms of what the play was, but Schottenheimer. What okay, let me set the scene. You have you finally bring the ball all the way down. You don't go to win the game against the Ravens. This is a good team. Be aggressive. Nathan Hawthorne: no. Jarod McInroy: Your offense has been killing it the entire game. And then Ravens go down and score. Great. You need a field goal, of course. But your offense gets down the field way quicker than you thought. You still have two timeouts. There's still a minute on the clock. You let the clock bleed for what? What are we letting the clock bleed for? Okay, whatever. I get it. Some people they want to play conservatively and play for overtime. Typically, that's what you do in a home game. This is not a home game. You're in real. Understand that. I understand you are the home team, but that is not the same thing. So you bleed the clock down all the way to get one play in before you kick the field goal. You let it go to 14 seconds. There's teach tape that tells you. You don't need more than eight seconds to run a play to the end zone. You have to throw the ball to the end zone. You can't take a sack, you have no more timeouts left. Everyone knows the scenario, they practice it in practice all the time. Eight seconds for this exact reason. Because you throw the ball immediately to George Pickens, sells over his head, whatever. You kick the field goal, take the field goal. Now there's too much time on the clock. Now the Ravens throw the ball down the middle of the field. Why is your defense playing the way it was? Way too soft, wasn't covering anybody. Gave them the giant chunk play and they were able to get the timeout off in time. This was nothing but coaching malpractice. It is all on the coaching staff. That it was a depleted defense to be in this game when your secondary is honestly people they probably had on the practice squad recently. It's impossible to explain. and you can't just keep letting these games get away from you as the season goes on, or you're gonna have you're gonna have problems. Cause now you're one and two. Now you're you don't feel like you're one and two, but you are. That is the reality of it. And the Eagles are more than likely about to be three and good luck. Good luck. That sucks. I'm mad Nathan Hawthorne: I'd yeah. And I'd Jarod McInroy: about it. Nathan Hawthorne: I'd like to know why between Jason Garrett, Mike McCarthy, and now Schottenheimer, this continues to be a problem for the Cowboys. Just again, lacking in the details and those clutch moments that's prevented them from winning the games that they need to. There's no accountability on that coach or but coaching. But here's the deal. What I wanted to see, and we talked about last week in our preview, I wanted to see the defenses step up. Neither defense stepped up in any way whatsoever. Now I know both offenses are solid. And especially the Cowboys, but neither defense stepped up and made a play to change the game, if we're being honest. if the Ravens were a little bit better in the red zone, I think that they could have won this by two scores. But, you know, that's just the way the that's the way it the game shakes out sometimes. I think that's something that Declan and Lamar are gonna continue to work on is what you know what that play calling, what that structure looks like. But what I love seeing from Declan Doyle is Derrick Henry went from sixteen carries to twenty six carries. You you played an honest game, you kept feeding the man. He didn't break a hundred, but you know that at any moment he can break one. So that was impressive. He heard us. He heard us. He was listening to the pod. Jarod McInroy: He heard us from last week, man. He he gave it to Derek. Nathan Hawthorne: And here's it, Lamar Jackson, 15 of 20. This is the Lamar I like to see. This Lamar gets me excited. And then he rushed for 50 yards. He scrambled when necessary and made his way around the field. But this is what I liked. He wasn't patient, didn't try to force anything. And this is what I want to see. I don't want to see Action Jackson. I just want to see Lamar Jackson. And that was, I think, the accountability that had been missing for him in previous years. He stayed patient. He kept cool. Didn't force anything. He let the run game carry it. Let Zay Flowers work after the catch. I was impressed by it. again that i end of the play game to me is more of a gaff on the Cowboys than it is execution by the Ravens. But at the end of the day they got down there. Lou pits the field goal. impressive way to walk out with a win. But that defense from Jesse Mentor, I need that I need that to tighten up in the coming weeks. I really do. And again, you've got the talent to be great on defense. you've got the Titans coming up, rinse them. You got the Falcons, rinse them, and and I'll believe it. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. I I was thinking about you actually when I saw that last touchdown that Lamar threw to Hibner. Like that was that was vintage Lamar of like this is when I scramble and try and make something happen. But he sat, he trusted that his offensive line was doing what they were doing. He let the play develop and then had a free touchdown. Like it Nathan Hawthorne: Free touchdown. Jarod McInroy: was it the this is these are the big steps he's gonna have to make moving forward. let's let's get into this last one really quick before we do a rapid fire reactions. Rams Rams Broncos are the Rams in trouble or did they just run into kind of a buzzsaw of like the things ever all the things are clicking for the Broncos right now? Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, I don't think I think that they really missed Puka, especially in the red zone. Another team that just struggled in the red zone yesterday and came away with a bunch of field goals helped my fantasy team. Didn't help them separate from the Broncos especially early. this Broncos team is the same team, shaky in the first half, but the defense keeps a minute and then sometimes Bonex turns into Joe Montana like clockwork. But the problem is is the Rams have so many penalties. They're holding teams to like two hundred and seventy some odd yards a game, which is one of the best in the NFL, but the offense has I think four or five turnovers. You're giving the defense short fields or the other offense short fields and they're scoring and they're taking advantage and you're keeping teams in game. So I don't think it was a buzzsaw. I just think, you know, if you ball bounces here, this way, that way, that interception gets called 'cause both guys have a right to the football, you know. I don't know. Jarod McInroy: You you can't tell me that the Broncos don't look pretty dialed on some of these play calls. That first off, anyone who Nathan Hawthorne: It's Jarod McInroy: doubts Jalen Waddle's ability, watch that double move he did on the two I know it was a two-point conversion, not a touchdown, and a perfect ball, but that double move was dirty. I mean, you only you're on the two yard line, so you only have twelve Nathan Hawthorne: You ain't got a lot of space. Jarod McInroy: yards to operate and you're able to do an out and up. Like, come on. Nathan Hawthorne: Also, shout out Mumpfield's out and up on Riley Moss too. Got vertical on him. It was nice. but yeah, what a what a what Jarod McInroy: Those boys are clean down in Denver. Nathan Hawthorne: a great what a great game to watch on Sunday night football. I think Davis Webb and Bo Nicks are gonna smooth out that play calling. So hopefully we can, you know, see this execution sooner in the game rather than trying to hang on late. But I want to see Waddle get activated sooner. and I think you Jarod McInroy: Mm-hmm. Nathan Hawthorne: mentioned this also just on the side. I don't we don't know who it is in their backfield. Run game has to get going. And it I'm I'm tired of seeing like four different running backs. Pick two, one gets one gets twenty, one gets eight. Pick two. I don't know who it is. I don't know who's healthy enough. Jarod McInroy: It's kind of like the quarterback thing you were talking about earlier, where like two quarterbacks is a bad thing. Three running backs is a bad thing because there's not enough room for three. Nathan Hawthorne: horrible thing. And they're all nicked up in their own way. Jarod McInroy: yeah. And when Jonah Coleman comes back, it almost seems like they liked him better than RJ Harvey. I don't know what's wrong with RJ Harvey, but maybe it's maybe it's opportunity, maybe it's a little bit of vindictiveness, like you were talking about, that Ben Johnson has, and they just don't like what he's got going on in terms of effort. Who knows? because we know JK Dobbins is nothing but effort. Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: so that's an easy guy to to put your faith in. but nonetheless, rapid fire reaction. So you're ready for it this week, week three. Nathan Hawthorne: Let's him. Let's hit him. Jarod McInroy: All right. We first off, there's nothing better than starting off with this game. Falcons 35 against the Packers 14. You guys are a dumpster Nathan Hawthorne: Amen. Jarod McInroy: fire. I told you. I told you, I told you, I told you it and it just is what it is. I'm sorry, Packers fans, I truly am, but the hate watching's been fun. I'm right. Just say it, just it appreciate it, move on. this team needs to grow. This is not your year. Don't know what to tell you. Falcons got a quarterback and actually looked pretty good. Nathan Hawthorne: Falcons got a quarterback, looked better. Penix responded great to his rough start. And then if you're the Packers, you address nothing in the offseason. Your wide receiver room got worse. You overpaid Christian Watson. You did nothing to address the offensive line and you knew Josh Jacobs was going to be suspended and you had no backup running back situation. So you this is what unfortunately you deserve. Jordan Love, you are paid to make up for these things that are lacking on your team, and you can't do it. I love that under pressure you get rid of the football, but sometimes that's why a team sends pressure. So that you get rid of the football and you might go to the right place. But if you're only getting three, four yards on these quick hot routes, that's not saving the game. Jarod McInroy: And I know this is rapid fire reactions, but we had too much to say on that one. Sorry, guys. Also, is he Nathan Hawthorne: The hate watch has been great. Jarod McInroy: is he not even the best LaFleur in the NFL at this point? We'll talk about Nathan Hawthorne: Hey, listen. Jarod McInroy: that game in a minute. okay, Chargers Bills, we kinda already harped on it. We don't need to get into it too much. Bills, good job. okay, Browns and Browns and Panthers. This was this was an interesting one. Browns might be better than we think, but they're cursed. So I I honestly have no faith in anything they have going on. Panthers have to start winning games because this division's wide open. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, Browns just didn't turn the ball over ten times. That was the problem. Deshaun Watson was throwing two picks and you had a fumble each game. You can't win that way. Lo and behold, when you don't do that and the offense looks okay, you're gonna win a game. I think, you know, the Panthers kinda got caught off guard, maybe smelling their own gas a little bit too much offensively, just didn't show up to play. Jarod McInroy: Yep. Lions beat the Jets thirty one twenty four. you might have been right. Jets have the talent to win ten games, but they won't. Lions, their defense is really in trouble. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Yep, it's exactly what it is. They've got so much talent. The Jets do. Kenyan Sadiq is special. That he made that catch legitimately four times at the U of O. It it's so impressive. He's so athletic. yeah, they got plenty of talent over there with the Jets. Geno Smith proven somehow he can still sling it. Lions defense, call for help. Call somebody. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Texans lose to the Colts. Texans Nathan Hawthorne: Whatever. Jarod McInroy: are in trouble. Chiefs, Dolphins. Yeah. Chiefs handled business. That was a terribly officiated game. nonetheless, there's a lot of really questionable calls and I don't think the Chiefs needed it. So I don't know why they got it, but Nathan Hawthorne: Chiefs were sleeping and I think that the Dolphins still kinda wanted to win this game. You don't you don't ever want to fully tank if you can, you know, catch somebody lacking. but Chiefs look like they did not care about that football game. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Giants, Titans. What a bad game. I don't even want to talk about it, but Giants pulled it out. Congrats. Nathan Hawthorne: Shout out to the Giants. Cam Ward, I I'm raising the flag on you again. I'm concerned with your ability to read offenses. And also I have to raid the raise the flag now on Brian Dayball, a guy who maybe I have been deceived by with his one year with Daniel Jones and a couple good years with Josh Allen. So and something ain't working there. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Bengals Steelers, really good game. We already talked about it, but yeah, I mean the big takeaways we kinda already touched on it. Steelers gotta get the the ground game going if they're gonna unleash Aaron Rodgers. Nathan Hawthorne: Yep. No notes. Jarod McInroy: All right. Seahawks commanders. This one is a tough one. Seahawks did not come to play really on defense. they fell asleep at the wheel. And honestly, that was the best that Blau offense has kind of looked to this point. So you found a way to do it with a backup quarterback. but this was clearly not the best Seahawks defense that we've seen. so I won't read into Nathan Hawthorne: Darn Jarod McInroy: it too much. Nathan Hawthorne: No, don't panic. Darnold's coming coming back, shaking off some rust. they got spotted six points by the pick six. And if you're the Seahawks, you played that one AM or that one PM game on the East Coast. You basically played at ten AM. That's hard to get up and play for when you go. statistics show that that's one of the hardest games for a West Coast team to play. So, you know, I'm not reading into anything. It was basically time for breakfast. Jarod McInroy: Yep. Yeah, it was time for breakfast. okay, Patriots Jaguars already talked about it. Good job, Jags. Patriots suck. Cardinals forty Niners. That was one where we were just talking about it. Michael Floor's looking pretty good. he's very limited with what he has in terms of talent. but the forty niners, they gotta figure out the defensive side of the ball. Nathan Hawthorne: Which shocks me with how great they looked week one, but then you realize the Rams had just woken up ten minutes before that game. And then again, this Mike LaFleur's offense is going to be organized. And it looks just like Shanahan's offense. It was funny. It was like watching two mirrors go against each other, just sept a younger version. I I don't know what's going on with Marvin Harrison Jr., not gonna belabor that point, but awesome to see the Cardinals putting up points and Wow, somehow this Niners offense keeps doing it despite losing somebody every single week. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Vikings at Bucks. The Vikings just keep getting it done. That's that's the the name of the game at this point. like you said, the growing pains with Kyler are very clear and evident. he's gonna have to continue to get better. We expect him to get better, but that defense is is holding a minute and three and good for them. And they'll keep rolling. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Offense needs to make s yeah, offense needs to make some adjustments with Justin Jefferson out. They did not do that in the game, and I feel like Kyler Murray was just looking at absolutely nothing downfield. so hopefully, you know, going into this next week they've got some adjustments. the Buccaneers, the wheels are falling off. Wheels are off. Wheels are off. Jarod McInroy: They're dawn. And we called it before the game even happened. Ravens, Cowboys. we already talked about great game. terrible Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. Jarod McInroy: ending. Raider Saints. Very exciting. I I'm I got a lot to say about the Raiders and we'll get into that later. But this is this is a good team and that was a good game. That was exactly I said it might be the game of the week. Nathan Hawthorne: In June, if you told me this was going to be one of the most fun games to watch this week, I would have said, Yeah, whatever, bro. But hey, again, these young coaches, they're not interested in tanking, waiting three years to get the guy. They want to go out and they want to win now. Blint Boobiac is nasty. Jarod McInroy: Yep. Rams. Broncos again already talked about it. good for the Broncos to get that win at home against a really good team. but we expect the Rams to be better as time goes on. They're kind of just just kinda getting through the season. Nathan Hawthorne: You just they're gonna have to tote their way through, wait till Miles Garrett comes back, wait till you get Puka back. That's gonna be huge on that offensive side. But in the meantime, again, if you guys are starting to get some reps, some looks, Ferguson's starting Terrence Ferguson's starting to develop a little bit. And Mumfield, just having those reps in for a few guys that would never see the field or see those targets without Puka. That's nice to see. Broncos think things are coming together. Maybe last year was not a fluke. Jarod McInroy: They're coming together. Yeah. All right, take us home, pal. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, that's gonna do it for the week three wack week three wrap up. That's gonna do it for the week three wrap up, folks. Thanks for hanging with us at KYP. If you like what we're laying down, please make sure to like and subscribe.
