- 1:53Speaker 4: See there there's no standing together. It's divided.
- 1:56Speaker 9: Black people are the ones that criticizing black community support Kyrie.
- 2:00Speaker 9: Are prominent black journalists television publicly denouncing him.
- 2:04Speaker 10: There is a certain power that media does have, and
- 2:08Speaker 10: there are certain forces demand certain responses to certain things.
- 2:12Speaker 4: All right, guys, welcome back e y L.
- 2:14Speaker 9: We are in New York and we have a very
- 2:17Speaker 9: very very special episode. We have some conversation off air, yes,
- 2:23Speaker 9: that could have turned into a whole hour conversation within itself.
- 2:25Speaker 4: So I said, we got to save something for us.
- 2:28Speaker 7: We've had a lot of conversations about these topics.
- 2:30Speaker 9: For sure, so should tell you Riley Irving is actually
- 2:36Speaker 9: made history by and correct me if I'm wrong. But
- 2:39Speaker 9: you are the first black woman to negotiate an NBA contract. Yes, ever,
- 2:46Speaker 9: I believe so, yeah, gradually, And I also believe I
- 2:50Speaker 9: think that you're the only black woman right now with
- 2:52Speaker 9: an NBA client as an.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Agent, active player, active player currently.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Unless somebody signed somebody in the least.
- 3:00Speaker 5: But yeah, okay, blazing, so you know, but it didn't start.
- 3:05Speaker 9: We didn't start their x VP at Black Enterprise, a
- 3:08Speaker 9: black BT, Black Entertainment Television.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I was actually senior vice president. I have to because
- 3:15Speaker 2: we don't always get our sure.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Sure, senior vice president at BT.
- 3:21Speaker 9: And now is the CEO of all even all even
- 3:25Speaker 9: all even all even.
- 3:26Speaker 7: So it has the A then the number eleven, but
- 3:29Speaker 7: it's puttingnounced all even.
- 3:30Speaker 9: Okay, And your client is none other than one of
- 3:34Speaker 9: the greatest of all time.
- 3:35Speaker 5: And we're going to say that very comfortably. One of
- 3:37Speaker 5: the greatest of all time. I don't care what number
- 3:40Speaker 5: y'all put him. He's in the conversation and he should
- 3:43Speaker 5: be on the list Kyrie to make our own list
- 3:46Speaker 5: for sure.
- 3:47Speaker 9: Kyrie Irving, So you represent one of the greatest athletes
- 3:51Speaker 9: of all time and somebody who has become a cultural
- 3:56Speaker 9: figure outside of the game of basketball for our different
- 4:00Speaker 9: reasons that we'll get into, but it's a tremendous story
- 4:05Speaker 9: of switching gears from corporate America to becoming a sports
- 4:08Speaker 9: agent to working with one of the most successful and
- 4:13Speaker 9: a lot of times misunderstood athletes of our generation who
- 4:17Speaker 9: make a lot of money. Had a very public dispute
- 4:22Speaker 9: with Nike, the biggest sneak of brand in history. So
- 4:27Speaker 9: there's a lot to talk about you being a black
- 4:28Speaker 9: woman in the sports world, and you were gracious enough
- 4:32Speaker 9: to come to invest Best, So thank you for that.
- 4:34Speaker 9: How wish your experience that Investments I loved it.
- 4:37Speaker 10: I am all about supporting my people, So when the
- 4:42Speaker 10: opportunity came, I was like, I absolutely will be there.
- 4:46Speaker 10: I'm all about how can I help uplift your platform,
- 4:51Speaker 10: help you be seen. So in whatever capacity I'm there.
- 4:55Speaker 7: We appreciate you being there.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Thanks for having me think it was amazing. I mean
- 4:58Speaker 2: just seeing.
- 5:00Speaker 10: That many people of color with a quest to understand
- 5:05Speaker 10: finances and money and investment and success.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It just it made my.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Heart really full appreciate that. Thank you. So all right,
- 5:15Speaker 4: well let's get into this.
- 5:17Speaker 9: So well talk about you being an agent, but let's
- 5:20Speaker 9: talk about when you were a senior executive at BT.
- 5:23Speaker 9: So what was your role at BT and how did
- 5:26Speaker 9: you climb up the ranks to reach that level.
- 5:30Speaker 10: So at BT, I was senior vice president of ad sales.
- 5:35Speaker 10: I managed our digital platform and so it's all about
- 5:39Speaker 10: selling and convincing.
- 5:40Speaker 2: People that people of color mattered.
- 5:43Speaker 10: And that they should invest their advertising dollars across be
- 5:47Speaker 10: et Digital. And so I spent about two fourteen fifteen
- 5:52Speaker 10: years with BT. I started as a salesperson. I remember
- 5:55Speaker 10: the first day that I walked in. They gave me PNG, Walmart,
- 6:02Speaker 10: Coca Cola and said, okay, go for it. And I
- 6:06Speaker 10: always tell people in my meanness, honestly it was the
- 6:09Speaker 10: best PhD, master's degree, NBA post doctorial education that I got.
- 6:19Speaker 10: And just being under Lewis and Ray and just having
- 6:23Speaker 10: this opportunity to be seen and to learn. So it's
- 6:27Speaker 10: just an amazing experience.
- 6:29Speaker 5: So that that says a lot, right, Like they're giving
- 6:32Speaker 5: you some of the top brands in the world in
- 6:35Speaker 5: the world, so you have to learn. I mean, sales
- 6:36Speaker 5: can be grueling and if you don't move your feet,
- 6:39Speaker 5: it's tough to eat. So what was that like for you?
- 6:42Speaker 5: What did you learn about negotiating and making sure that
- 6:45Speaker 5: we are seen right, because a lot of times we
- 6:47Speaker 5: look at these brands and we don't see us. But
- 6:50Speaker 5: over the past maybe five or six years, we're starting
- 6:52Speaker 5: to see a little bit of change. We've seen some
- 6:53Speaker 5: deals that they's made. What was that like early stages?
- 6:56Speaker 2: Early stages.
- 6:57Speaker 10: I came from an environment that at because I've always
- 7:01Speaker 10: been in sales, so my entire career was in some
- 7:04Speaker 10: level of media sales. And early stages, it was like
- 7:08Speaker 10: I was walking into this environment that looked like me,
- 7:11Speaker 10: and that was very, very different from any of the
- 7:14Speaker 10: other media sales positions that I had. Lewis is President
- 7:19Speaker 10: of sales. You don't see that. As a black man.
- 7:23Speaker 10: Ray was EVP of sales, you don't see that. I
- 7:26Speaker 10: saw vice presidents that looked like me. So it was
- 7:30Speaker 10: that first opportunity that Okay, I'm in something special, And
- 7:35Speaker 10: for me, it was really about putting my head down
- 7:37Speaker 10: and learning as much as I possibly could. So I
- 7:43Speaker 10: literally was a sponge. I would raise my hand and
- 7:47Speaker 10: ask questions. I was never afraid. My thing is talked
- 7:50Speaker 10: to me.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Like I'm three.
- 7:51Speaker 10: I will not be offended because I never had the
- 7:54Speaker 10: ego to walk in and say that I knew it all,
- 7:57Speaker 10: or that I had enough experience to dictate how you
- 8:01Speaker 10: should interact with me. I was like, there's no ego here,
- 8:04Speaker 10: I know nothing about this business.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Teach me.
- 8:07Speaker 10: And so they were gracious enough to teach me, and
- 8:10Speaker 10: they were gracious enough to demand that everybody else teach.
- 8:13Speaker 10: And that was what that environment really was. It was grueling.
- 8:17Speaker 10: It was not this nine to five because we super
- 8:21Speaker 10: served a consumer that was so important, and it was
- 8:24Speaker 10: black and brown people, and so it was really about us.
- 8:27Speaker 10: We had the largest repository of consumer insights about black
- 8:31Speaker 10: people on the planet. If you wanted to know how
- 8:33Speaker 10: black people ate, what they did, how they did it,
- 8:36Speaker 10: when they did, BET was that place to learn about it.
- 8:39Speaker 10: And so our job was really to be missionaries and
- 8:44Speaker 10: to go out and to educate because there were all
- 8:46Speaker 10: of these preconceived notions of black people can't afford this, Yes,
- 8:50Speaker 10: yeah they can. Black people aren't interested in this. They're
- 8:53Speaker 10: not interested in investment.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yes they are.
- 8:55Speaker 10: They're raising their hand right now and saying teach me,
- 8:58Speaker 10: show me. And you saw it yourself invest Best. You
- 9:01Speaker 10: had thousand what was it, twenty thousand people show up
- 9:05Speaker 10: because they wanted to learn, right, So imagine if you
- 9:08Speaker 10: had every financial company, every investment company invest and invest Best,
- 9:13Speaker 10: what their return on investment would have been from these
- 9:15Speaker 10: people that are like, I'm raising my hand, teach me.
- 9:17Speaker 10: And that was something that we had to do within
- 9:21Speaker 10: the confines of beet and really showcased that that black
- 9:24Speaker 10: and brown audience was an important audience.
- 9:26Speaker 9: So how did you convince the corporate that it was
- 9:30Speaker 9: in their best interest to, you know, invest dollars not
- 9:34Speaker 9: only like as a charity thing, but as like a
- 9:37Speaker 9: good investment.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Never is charity because we're not a charity case.
- 9:42Speaker 4: But that's a lot of people look at it like that.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah, we went in, We went in with research.
- 9:48Speaker 10: We went in and we talked about we influenced trends,
- 9:52Speaker 10: and that's it. At the end of the day, we
- 9:55Speaker 10: influence trends. If you want your business to soar, this
- 9:58Speaker 10: is how your business saw And we demanded top dollar
- 10:03Speaker 10: and it was really you had you had an army
- 10:04Speaker 10: of people behind you that were unapologetic and what we
- 10:10Speaker 10: demanded advertisers do and engage with with the consumers that
- 10:16Speaker 10: we serve.
- 10:17Speaker 7: How does that work right?
- 10:18Speaker 5: Because there's a number that they have in mind, it's
- 10:21Speaker 5: a number that you have in mind.
- 10:23Speaker 7: But in between, as a negotiation.
- 10:24Speaker 2: It's alli orgreciation.
- 10:25Speaker 5: So what, like, what are some of those those those
- 10:27Speaker 5: key things when we're going into the negotiation that we
- 10:31Speaker 5: should have on our board.
- 10:33Speaker 7: Like we're not moving on this, we're not, but like,
- 10:35Speaker 7: what are some of those things?
- 10:36Speaker 10: I think you have to start first at what's your strategy,
- 10:38Speaker 10: what do you know about the company? What do you
- 10:40Speaker 10: understand about the company? And also what's important to them?
- 10:45Speaker 10: Because at the end of the day, if you want something,
- 10:47Speaker 10: you want to pay for it, but I have to
- 10:49Speaker 10: convince you that you really wanted. So imagine if there's
- 10:52Speaker 10: a car that you want, right, you're going to pay
- 10:55Speaker 10: for it no matter what you want this car and
- 10:57Speaker 10: whether this car is a million dollars, two million dollars,
- 10:59Speaker 10: a thous dollars, two thousand dollars, if you want it,
- 11:02Speaker 10: you're going to pay for it. I just have to
- 11:03Speaker 10: convince you that you wanted So it was coming in
- 11:07Speaker 10: with the strategy. It was coming in with creativity, because
- 11:12Speaker 10: the most creative person gets the biggest house at the
- 11:14Speaker 10: end of the day. And that was the mantra that
- 11:16Speaker 10: we lived by. So we knew that we had to
- 11:19Speaker 10: show you the facts, show you why this audience mattered,
- 11:23Speaker 10: get you to a place where you're like, I want
- 11:25Speaker 10: that audience. Come in with the creativity and show you
- 11:29Speaker 10: why in this beautiful house or in this beautiful car,
- 11:31Speaker 10: this is why this audience stands out the most.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And then we would get to that price and what
- 11:36Speaker 2: that ultimate rate was.
- 11:37Speaker 10: Now, we didn't always get obviously what we wanted, but
- 11:41Speaker 10: we always settled at a in my mind, a comfortable
- 11:44Speaker 10: space at the end.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Of the day.
- 11:46Speaker 9: So when was the transition from you working at BT
- 11:50Speaker 9: to becoming a sports agent.
- 11:53Speaker 2: That came about?
- 11:53Speaker 10: It was something that I didn't expect, so it wasn't
- 11:56Speaker 10: I didn't have high aspirations of I want to go
- 12:00Speaker 10: into sports and do anything in sports. If we talked
- 12:04Speaker 10: five years ago, I would have said, Hey, I want
- 12:06Speaker 10: to be president of a of a media sales organization.
- 12:11Speaker 10: The opportunity to go into sports came from Kai. He
- 12:15Speaker 10: calls me one day and He says, hey, I love
- 12:20Speaker 10: your business acumen. How much would it cost for me
- 12:24Speaker 10: to hire you and have you lead my team? And
- 12:27Speaker 10: I said, you can't afford me?
- 12:31Speaker 2: And he said what what did you just say?
- 12:33Speaker 9: He wants you to lead the team, not represent him,
- 12:35Speaker 9: but just lead his business, represent him and lead his business.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Oh, he wanted you to be his agent.
- 12:39Speaker 2: He wanted me to do everything.
- 12:40Speaker 7: Okay, what timeframe is this?
- 12:42Speaker 2: This was summer of twenty twenty one.
- 12:45Speaker 5: Okay, okay, So he has he's left the Celtics, he's
- 12:50Speaker 5: with Brooklyn, and.
- 12:51Speaker 9: It's important to know we have We didn't actually mention it,
- 12:53Speaker 9: but you guys, if they didn't know about your name,
- 12:56Speaker 9: you're obviously related.
- 12:57Speaker 4: He's your bonus son.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Correct.
- 12:59Speaker 4: So it's a it's a family business as well.
- 13:03Speaker 10: And that's why I said you can't afford me, because
- 13:04Speaker 10: how do you put a price on a labor of love?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Right? I'm like, this is like being a parent.
- 13:11Speaker 10: You can't say all right, so I raised you, I
- 13:15Speaker 10: put you through elementary, middle school and high school and
- 13:17Speaker 10: you owe me x y Z.
- 13:19Speaker 2: That's not it. And so what I said to him was, hey,
- 13:23Speaker 2: you know.
- 13:23Speaker 10: I can help you. I'll lean in and help you
- 13:26Speaker 10: and provide whatever business acumen that I can. I'm not
- 13:31Speaker 10: the most familiar with sports. It's going to be one
- 13:35Speaker 10: of those situations where it's going to be a little
- 13:37Speaker 10: touch and go.
- 13:38Speaker 7: That's interesting, but I'll do it. So when he proposes
- 13:42Speaker 7: this to you, is it?
- 13:43Speaker 4: Now?
- 13:43Speaker 5: Let me familiarize myself with the game of basketball? What's
- 13:46Speaker 5: sports with contracts?
- 13:47Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah?
- 13:48Speaker 7: Like take us through that?
- 13:50Speaker 10: So that was oh lord, let me because now like
- 13:54Speaker 10: I'm I'm watching the game before as Kyrie's my child,
- 13:59Speaker 10: go I read. Now I have to watch the game
- 14:02Speaker 10: from a business perspective. Now I'm looking at contracts. Now
- 14:06Speaker 10: I'm looking at different players and trying to analyze what
- 14:10Speaker 10: their career has been for the last five years, ten years,
- 14:14Speaker 10: What would the successes, what with the failure? So now
- 14:17Speaker 10: I'm deep into the research of really understanding this business
- 14:21Speaker 10: of sports, this business of basketball.
- 14:24Speaker 4: So what all right?
- 14:25Speaker 9: So at first you say that he can't afford you,
- 14:28Speaker 9: but obviously you ended up taking a position.
- 14:30Speaker 4: So when did you decide that you wanted to do it?
- 14:35Speaker 10: After I when you get involved and you really start
- 14:40Speaker 10: to look under the carpet and under the rug and
- 14:43Speaker 10: then the crevices, and you realize, oh, there's some things
- 14:46Speaker 10: that's not right here, and you really start to come
- 14:50Speaker 10: in and change it, and you realize that you can't
- 14:53Speaker 10: be a part time participant.
- 14:55Speaker 9: So you saw things that was happening in his business
- 14:57Speaker 9: world that he was getting taken advantage of, or it
- 15:01Speaker 9: just wasn't optimal.
- 15:02Speaker 2: It just wasn't optimal.
- 15:04Speaker 10: He's been always really smart and really good about business,
- 15:08Speaker 10: but there were just things in terms of representation, how
- 15:15Speaker 10: he was targeted that just did not sit well with me,
- 15:22Speaker 10: Questions that probably weren't properly.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Raised on his behalf.
- 15:28Speaker 10: I felt like he needed, at that moment in time,
- 15:32Speaker 10: a real ally in his in his corner that wasn't
- 15:36Speaker 10: concerned about how much do I make from this, but
- 15:39Speaker 10: really just wanted to see him do well.
- 15:41Speaker 7: Yes, a summer twenty twenty one.
- 15:42Speaker 5: This is post COVID, well in the midst of COVID,
- 15:46Speaker 5: not not post COVID, post the decision I'm not taking
- 15:49Speaker 5: the vaccine right at right at that moment, this is that.
- 15:53Speaker 10: When Yeah, this is when I not his because I
- 15:56Speaker 10: hadn't taken the agent's exam yet, so I was like
- 15:59Speaker 10: the business manager and this is right when the mandate
- 16:02Speaker 10: started to come in where you had to basically take vaccine.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Take the vaccine which unless you.
- 16:11Speaker 10: Unless you lived, is played in other areas.
- 16:14Speaker 5: So I remember he played preseason versus the Golden State Warriors,
- 16:19Speaker 5: but he couldn't play at home in.
- 16:21Speaker 2: New York, couldn't play at home in New York, which would.
- 16:23Speaker 7: Make no sense.
- 16:24Speaker 5: And so at this time the NBA, he's he's not playing, right,
- 16:28Speaker 5: there's a decision here I.
- 16:30Speaker 10: Took right before. So I agreed in like two weeks later.
- 16:34Speaker 2: That's when I was with right in the fire. That's
- 16:37Speaker 2: what I was hit with.
- 16:39Speaker 10: So we just wanted to make sure that you understand
- 16:41Speaker 10: that this mandate just came down and he would need
- 16:45Speaker 10: to be vaccinated in order to play.
- 16:49Speaker 7: On one side.
- 16:49Speaker 5: So it's a lot of things happening at the same
- 16:51Speaker 5: time because at the same time, we're looking maybe long
- 16:54Speaker 5: term extension and now this plays a rule and so
- 16:57Speaker 5: you have to are you having to? I mean, I've
- 17:00Speaker 5: so you're having these conversations, well, you know, if this
- 17:02Speaker 5: a doesn't happen, long term extension could be in jeopardy.
- 17:06Speaker 7: And then some other things transpired. But what what are.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Those conversations like at the time from your understanding, because
- 17:11Speaker 5: this is new to you as well.
- 17:12Speaker 2: It's new to me.
- 17:14Speaker 10: It was first like are you serious, because I really didn't.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I was like, this is.
- 17:21Speaker 10: To both to both to the team and Takai, like
- 17:25Speaker 10: are you serious because I can't believe that this is
- 17:29Speaker 10: happening and what's And there was a lot of confusion
- 17:34Speaker 10: within it because it was but you can you can't
- 17:37Speaker 10: play at home, but you can play in other places,
- 17:41Speaker 10: and you just it was just one of the most
- 17:44Speaker 10: confusing things ever at that time to navigate. And there
- 17:48Speaker 10: was not a rule book or blueprint or anything that said, Okay,
- 17:52Speaker 10: this is how you navigated, and it was difficult. I'm
- 17:57Speaker 10: not gonna because you didn't know what the outcome.
- 18:00Speaker 9: Was going to be, right, So, okay, so you take
- 18:04Speaker 9: the position he doesn't. He decides that he does not
- 18:08Speaker 9: want to get vaccinated. At first, they were kind of
- 18:11Speaker 9: like figuring it out, he played some games, he didn't
- 18:14Speaker 9: play some games. Then to my understanding, correct me if
- 18:16Speaker 9: I'm wrong, the organization kind of took a hard stance
- 18:18Speaker 9: on this, like, look, if you don't get vaccinated, you're
- 18:21Speaker 9: not playing.
- 18:22Speaker 10: They didn't want a part time player, right, so their
- 18:25Speaker 10: objective was they wanted a full time player, and if
- 18:28Speaker 10: he wasn't going to get vaccinated, he wasn't going to
- 18:30Speaker 10: play at all.
- 18:31Speaker 9: And so so then he misses like forty games something
- 18:34Speaker 9: like that. He's getting paid for that though, right, he
- 18:37Speaker 9: didn't get paid for that. So how much money did
- 18:39Speaker 9: he lose that season?
- 18:43Speaker 2: A lot? Let's say that, A.
- 18:45Speaker 9: Lot of money, A lot of money, probably like ten
- 18:48Speaker 9: million dollars a more, no twenty million.
- 18:50Speaker 5: I calculated it before. It was upwards of thirty to
- 18:53Speaker 5: forty million.
- 18:54Speaker 9: Not that much, but he lost a lot, all right,
- 18:56Speaker 9: So well endorsements, Well, so he loses a lot of money.
- 19:00Speaker 9: He ends up actually playing in the playoffs, I believe, right.
- 19:03Speaker 10: Towards the n I want to say, maybe March sometime
- 19:08Speaker 10: they let it.
- 19:09Speaker 9: That's where the mandate was dropped it. So all right,
- 19:12Speaker 9: so in this time when he's not playing, he's losing money.
- 19:15Speaker 9: He becomes public enemy number one, which happens a few
- 19:20Speaker 9: times throughout his career, but he becomes public enemy number one.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Steven A.
- 19:23Speaker 9: Smith had a whole rant against how ignorant he was
- 19:28Speaker 9: for doing it. My question is, like, well, he's going
- 19:30Speaker 9: through all of this, you're representing him, right, but you're
- 19:33Speaker 9: also his mother as well. Yeah, so how is your
- 19:37Speaker 9: conversations with the Brooklyn Nets, if you're having any conversations,
- 19:41Speaker 9: how is your conversations with him as his agent and
- 19:45Speaker 9: his mother, and how is your dealings with his PR team,
- 19:48Speaker 9: his media team, Like how are you handling all of
- 19:51Speaker 9: this in the midst of the storm?
- 19:54Speaker 10: Day by day? And that's and I'm not going to
- 19:57Speaker 10: sugarcoat it. I'm not going to it was a day
- 19:59Speaker 10: by day, was an active, daily.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Conversation action.
- 20:10Speaker 10: One of the things you have to understand is that
- 20:12Speaker 10: we all and I don't know if you guys have children,
- 20:15Speaker 10: but you one of the things you tell your kids
- 20:17Speaker 10: stand up for what you believe in. Never you know,
- 20:21Speaker 10: be a leader and not a follower. And so in
- 20:23Speaker 10: this situation, he's standing. He's doing what you've taught him
- 20:27Speaker 10: to do. I've known since he was eight years old.
- 20:29Speaker 10: And so those are the conversations that you have with
- 20:31Speaker 10: your kids. You're like, hey, stand up for what you
- 20:33Speaker 10: believe in, no matter what, no matter what people say.
- 20:38Speaker 10: And so here it is he's standing up for what
- 20:40Speaker 10: he believes in, and the whole world is creating a
- 20:45Speaker 10: narrative a narrative, a label. It's it's not he's not
- 20:50Speaker 10: a team player, He's not this, he's not that. And
- 20:54Speaker 10: so for me, it was really making sure that he
- 20:57Speaker 10: was okay.
- 21:00Speaker 4: I was his spirits, How was his spirits on that tone?
- 21:02Speaker 2: His spirits were good. His spirits were really good.
- 21:07Speaker 10: But I think that as a family, we really came
- 21:11Speaker 10: around and really supported him. And I think that that
- 21:15Speaker 10: was that was the reason why you know, he didn't
- 21:18Speaker 10: go into this this deep depression or anything, because that's
- 21:21Speaker 10: a lot every day to hear your name said based
- 21:26Speaker 10: on the decision that you really yea.
- 21:28Speaker 7: And his name was brought up far more than other
- 21:31Speaker 7: athletes who.
- 21:31Speaker 10: To this day will label like there are other athletes
- 21:36Speaker 10: that did not get vaccinated.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Aaron Rodgers lied about it, m VP right, Joe Novak
- 21:44Speaker 5: Djokovic number one tennis player probably all the time, same thing,
- 21:47Speaker 5: but nobody had the spotlight on them like.
- 21:50Speaker 7: How I did.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And here's the thing.
- 21:52Speaker 10: If you go through and you look at post interviews,
- 21:56Speaker 10: you'll see athletes that also refused to get vaccinated. They
- 22:02Speaker 10: don't have and he was an anti vaxxer or he
- 22:05Speaker 10: refused to get vaccinated attached to their name but with Kai,
- 22:10Speaker 10: it's and he did this, and he did this, and
- 22:12Speaker 10: he did this, and he did this attached to that,
- 22:14Speaker 10: Like that is the descriptor for him making a decision that.
- 22:20Speaker 2: That I support.
- 22:22Speaker 10: I'm a person that it is your body. You only
- 22:25Speaker 10: get one, and if that is the decision that you make,
- 22:30Speaker 10: I'm very much a pro choice person. I'm not going
- 22:33Speaker 10: to stand in and say you should do with this
- 22:36Speaker 10: or you should whatever.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Did you this is your body?
- 22:40Speaker 9: Were you were you having conversations with the Brooklyn Nuts.
- 22:44Speaker 4: What were those conversations like.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Just check in?
- 22:46Speaker 9: He just did They never like put pressure or like
- 22:51Speaker 9: tried to give an ultimatum.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Or like I mean, the ultimatum was he didn't get
- 22:55Speaker 2: his extension. So that was the once.
- 22:58Speaker 9: That was off the table even before, cause I think
- 23:00Speaker 9: at some point in time they knew that I is
- 23:01Speaker 9: not going to work out. But I would assume in
- 23:03Speaker 9: the early stages that you still were trying to make
- 23:07Speaker 9: it work.
- 23:07Speaker 4: I would assume, right, yeah.
- 23:08Speaker 10: I mean what I will say is we conversed, and
- 23:14Speaker 10: we talked. I think that when it was very clear
- 23:17Speaker 10: that he wasn't gonna get vaccinated, it was just.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Hey, we're just checking in how's he doing?
- 23:23Speaker 4: So it was Cord, was it? It wasr Yeah.
- 23:26Speaker 5: I can kind of just go backwards for two seconds
- 23:28Speaker 5: because the fact that you became an agent, I mean,
- 23:32Speaker 5: how what was that there?
- 23:33Speaker 10: There's test because we spoke to a few I wasn't
- 23:36Speaker 10: even an agent at that point.
- 23:37Speaker 5: This is what I'm saying, like, at what point did
- 23:38Speaker 5: you the NBA say that you're a registered now to
- 23:41Speaker 5: be agent.
- 23:42Speaker 10: That didn't happen until maybe March or twenty twenty two,
- 23:45Speaker 10: February March or twenty twenty two.
- 23:47Speaker 5: So this is during the time he's almost coming back,
- 23:49Speaker 5: and now you're a registered agent, so you're dealing with
- 23:53Speaker 5: family issue, you're representing him, and now you're working on
- 23:56Speaker 5: a professional career as well. Right at the point where
- 23:59Speaker 5: he's about to come back.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Exactly, Wow, and the agent we just took a test
- 24:03Speaker 4: to think test right, Okay, so you become an agent.
- 24:08Speaker 4: You said that he doesn't get an extension, right, So
- 24:12Speaker 4: now he's a free agent at that point in time.
- 24:15Speaker 2: So yeah, one more year on this contract, which was
- 24:18Speaker 2: an option year.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Yeah he played that yea.
- 24:21Speaker 2: That would have been the twenty two to twenty three
- 24:23Speaker 2: was his option year.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Yeah, so he took the option. He played, and then
- 24:27Speaker 5: we traded traded to Dallas. But he got traded mid season. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 5: they got traded. But so as that process is happening,
- 24:36Speaker 5: that's on the court. But Nike, I mean, this is
- 24:39Speaker 5: a premier athlete. Like we went over, there's obviously Jordan
- 24:43Speaker 5: and Jordan Brand and then it's Kobe and then it's
- 24:46Speaker 5: like Lebronchi KD. What are those conversations like because this
- 24:51Speaker 5: is one of the premier athletes his uncle Drew, this
- 24:53Speaker 5: is the top selling shoe.
- 24:55Speaker 7: Kids love it.
- 24:56Speaker 2: His shoes were still selling at the same time, still selling.
- 25:02Speaker 10: We were in conversations, well, we hadn't really started at
- 25:07Speaker 10: that point about what the next steps would be, if
- 25:10Speaker 10: he was going to remain a signature athlete or not,
- 25:15Speaker 10: in what way they wanted to continue that.
- 25:18Speaker 2: We hadn't even started that yet.
- 25:20Speaker 7: Issues were so they're definitely on board, were already.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I wouldn't say they were fully on board.
- 25:25Speaker 10: I think that internally, like within every company, everybody had
- 25:29Speaker 10: issues with there were people that were I'm pro vaccination
- 25:34Speaker 10: and people that were I'm anti vaccination, and so I
- 25:37Speaker 10: think that probably within and I don't know this to
- 25:39Speaker 10: be true, within those Nike walls, there were people that said, hey,
- 25:44Speaker 10: you're forcing me to get vaccinated, but you have a
- 25:47Speaker 10: signature athlete that isn't vaccinated. But what kind of messaging
- 25:50Speaker 10: is that sending. So I'm sure you know everybody it
- 25:53Speaker 10: was a difficult time for every company, just having the
- 25:58Speaker 10: conversation about vaccine versus non vaccination.
- 26:03Speaker 9: So he makes it through that and now he's playing
- 26:09Speaker 9: for the Nets, and then something else happens. So he
- 26:13Speaker 9: shares a link to a documentary and that causes another
- 26:16Speaker 9: firestorm and he gets suspended indefinitely.
- 26:23Speaker 4: And okay, so now NBA punishing on broken nets, punishing
- 26:30Speaker 4: on But now the Nike situation starts to unravel because
- 26:35Speaker 4: now Nike at some point steps away from him. Right
- 26:41Speaker 4: was he up for a new contract or did they
- 26:44Speaker 4: just terminate the current contract. He was up for a
- 26:47Speaker 4: new contract. It just so happened out timing was at
- 26:50Speaker 4: the same time, was at the same time, so they
- 26:52Speaker 4: didn't technically terminate him. They just didn't renew. They did
- 26:55Speaker 4: nothing essential to extend that contract. Essentially, How was okay?
- 27:00Speaker 9: So how was that that was another obviously very high
- 27:03Speaker 9: profile news story. How was that for you and for him?
- 27:08Speaker 10: Going through that, I think what he wanted and perhaps
- 27:14Speaker 10: what he would have wanted from Nike, I don't know
- 27:17Speaker 10: if Nike would have been able to give it to him,
- 27:20Speaker 10: because he wanted a lot more creative control, he wanted
- 27:26Speaker 10: a lot more equity, he wanted higher commission like there
- 27:29Speaker 10: were there were things that he wanted that I honestly
- 27:33Speaker 10: think that just was not within Nike's ecosystem to provide
- 27:37Speaker 10: or to give.
- 27:38Speaker 5: So regardless of the situation it was Nike, he still
- 27:42Speaker 5: might have been home for you guys anyway, exactly.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he tweeted and said that he didn't
- 27:46Speaker 4: like to shoot that they had put out.
- 27:48Speaker 7: It was it denying.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Uh the eights. Yeah?
- 27:52Speaker 9: But how but how was the from getting suspended? How
- 27:57Speaker 9: was that dealing once again? Now you got to deal
- 27:59Speaker 9: with the Brooklyn nuts, you got to deal with the NBA.
- 28:01Speaker 9: He had to go meet with the commissioner and a
- 28:04Speaker 9: bunch of other tough community service and different things that nature. Like,
- 28:07Speaker 9: how was that because he just went through something previously
- 28:11Speaker 9: with COVID, now he's going something going through something completely different,
- 28:14Speaker 9: but another thing less than a year later.
- 28:18Speaker 4: So how was that for you guys going through that difficult.
- 28:22Speaker 2: It was. It was a very very.
- 28:26Speaker 10: Difficult moment, and I think that to really dive into
- 28:31Speaker 10: that detail, I don't want him to be here to
- 28:33Speaker 10: really talk it through because there were so many nuances
- 28:38Speaker 10: there that I think when you really hear the real
- 28:42Speaker 10: story behind it, it'll make it'll make your jaw drop.
- 28:46Speaker 5: You have probably one of the most intensifying first years
- 28:50Speaker 5: on the job very much.
- 28:52Speaker 7: I've heard right you talk about that through.
- 28:54Speaker 5: Contract negotiation and be a contract negotiation suspensions world pandemic
- 29:00Speaker 5: like all that's happening in your first year. So we're
- 29:03Speaker 5: at the point where you know, we're looking at from
- 29:06Speaker 5: a financial standpoint and some of the things that you
- 29:08Speaker 5: want from a shoe deal, it's.
- 29:10Speaker 7: Not going to happen. Perhaps that night.
- 29:12Speaker 5: Are other shoe companies reaching out and offering because I
- 29:15Speaker 5: know we land and we'll get to that. Are other
- 29:17Speaker 5: shoe companies reaching out and saying, this is a prize
- 29:20Speaker 5: free agent from an athletic endorsement standpoint, we should go
- 29:25Speaker 5: ahead and try to sign them.
- 29:27Speaker 10: Initially, we wanted to go independent, okay, and we had
- 29:31Speaker 10: a lot of conversations with being a real independent shoe brand,
- 29:38Speaker 10: and I sort of made the decision collectively with his
- 29:44Speaker 10: dad that that probably wasn't the best route because building
- 29:49Speaker 10: a shoe and building a performance shoe on the court
- 29:54Speaker 10: where his feet are your most valuable asset, was something
- 30:00Speaker 10: we were just really worried about from just being an
- 30:02Speaker 10: independent brand, just having all of the resources, the tools
- 30:06Speaker 10: and everything to make sure that his feet were protected.
- 30:09Speaker 2: We want him to have a.
- 30:10Speaker 10: Very long career, and so we didn't want to jump
- 30:13Speaker 10: out and say, hey, we're going to do this independent
- 30:16Speaker 10: and we produce a shoe that just couldn't stand.
- 30:20Speaker 9: Well you did you ever look at the big ball
- 30:23Speaker 9: of brand and what happened with that as something.
- 30:25Speaker 7: That was as you said, that's what I.
- 30:28Speaker 9: Think study because I mean they said that, I don't
- 30:30Speaker 9: know if it's true or not. Shout out to Lonzo.
- 30:32Speaker 9: He came to invest best, but they say one of
- 30:34Speaker 9: the reasons why he's hurt is because of the shoe.
- 30:36Speaker 4: I don't know if that's true. It broke down.
- 30:38Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know, and you know, I don't.
- 30:41Speaker 10: I just I think that when you think about performance
- 30:44Speaker 10: and the way he moves in the angles in which
- 30:47Speaker 10: he moves on the court, and remember I talked about
- 30:49Speaker 10: you know your research and you study being independent and
- 30:54Speaker 10: just basically producing a shoe that can achieve that mechanism
- 30:58Speaker 10: was something that we all were really concerned about. There's
- 31:02Speaker 10: some things that you can kind of build a plane
- 31:04Speaker 10: while flying it. This wasn't one of them, and this
- 31:07Speaker 10: was one of them that we just didn't want to
- 31:08Speaker 10: take that that that chance on and that's just being honest.
- 31:13Speaker 7: So you end up with answer.
- 31:15Speaker 5: And so this is interesting because this is now I'm
- 31:19Speaker 5: looking at this as a global play, right like they
- 31:22Speaker 5: have at the time. Well, Dwayne Wade was there, who's at.
- 31:29Speaker 7: Lay Clay Thompson. That's what it was.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Are you watching how he's structuring his deal and looking
- 31:35Speaker 5: at away this is completely independent. We want to have
- 31:37Speaker 5: a global brand. This is a company that I think
- 31:39Speaker 5: we can partner with.
- 31:40Speaker 10: Yeah, So we took the time to kind of figure
- 31:43Speaker 10: out what did we really want an a shoe deal.
- 31:46Speaker 10: So before we even you know, when it was Nike
- 31:49Speaker 10: was done, it was like, what is what's important? So
- 31:51Speaker 10: it was creativity, it was price point, quality, products, a
- 31:56Speaker 10: host of other things. And so when we started to
- 32:00Speaker 10: have the conversations with Anton a few other companies, it
- 32:05Speaker 10: was really about us creating our own contract because we
- 32:09Speaker 10: didn't want something that was really a traditional contract where
- 32:12Speaker 10: it was like you just get royalties and you get
- 32:14Speaker 10: a base commission and you walk away. We wanted something
- 32:17Speaker 10: that had a lot more ownership for us because we
- 32:20Speaker 10: knew that once we put Kai in the lab, we
- 32:23Speaker 10: knew what he was going to create at the end
- 32:25Speaker 10: of the day. We wanted something that gave us real equity,
- 32:32Speaker 10: that gave us a real opportunity to control the narrative
- 32:36Speaker 10: and do something really different. We wanted something that was international,
- 32:39Speaker 10: and we wanted something that we could also use as
- 32:43Speaker 10: a springboard. So we knew that in China his shoes
- 32:46Speaker 10: were very successful, so it just made sense right when
- 32:50Speaker 10: we looked at if we thought about what part of
- 32:53Speaker 10: the world were his number one sales, it was China.
- 32:57Speaker 10: So we immediately kind of stood there and said, what
- 32:59Speaker 10: can we built here and Expand.
- 33:02Speaker 5: I heard him talk about the impact that Kobe had
- 33:05Speaker 5: right when Kobe when they when they played in Beijing,
- 33:07Speaker 5: and they saw the impact that we're stars, But this
- 33:10Speaker 5: guy is at a different level because of the Chinese market,
- 33:14Speaker 5: and I know he's close with Jimmy Butler, who signed
- 33:17Speaker 5: with Leni and so you can kind of see this
- 33:21Speaker 5: this global impact. At you talked about the creative process
- 33:26Speaker 5: at you said he wanted more.
- 33:28Speaker 7: What is that like now in it?
- 33:30Speaker 10: Yeah, I've learned more about shoes and I am a
- 33:37Speaker 10: woman who loves shoes than I ever knew before, from
- 33:43Speaker 10: start to finish. When I was in China, I kind
- 33:46Speaker 10: of looked at his dad and I said, we couldn't.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Have done this bar This is a process.
- 33:51Speaker 10: It's really this, this process to build a performance shoe
- 33:56Speaker 10: and all of the testing that goes into it. So
- 34:00Speaker 10: the product that the consumers are going to get, I
- 34:04Speaker 10: think they're going to be really really happy because he
- 34:06Speaker 10: has his finger on everything.
- 34:08Speaker 9: So you spoke about what you didn't get a Nike
- 34:12Speaker 9: that he wanted as far as some equity and creative
- 34:15Speaker 9: design and or can you give us some details perhaps
- 34:18Speaker 9: on like what he's actually had.
- 34:21Speaker 10: Let me give you the secret sauce. He's very he's
- 34:26Speaker 10: very modest about is. He doesn't like to talk about money.
- 34:29Speaker 10: Right for him, it's because he wants to be seen
- 34:32Speaker 10: as Kyrie the individual, Kyrie the person, Kyrie the humanitarian,
- 34:37Speaker 10: not Kyrie.
- 34:38Speaker 2: This is how much money. So he has equity, Yeah, he's.
- 34:41Speaker 10: Not interested in, Like that's a secret sauce. That's a
- 34:45Speaker 10: secret sauce.
- 34:46Speaker 5: So let's talk about this because you know the season
- 34:48Speaker 5: that it did start, But you guys had an amazing
- 34:50Speaker 5: summer and one of the things coming into the summer
- 34:53Speaker 5: was free agency.
- 34:54Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, he.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Got traded to Dallas, but now's he's a free agent. Yeah,
- 35:00Speaker 5: the most he can get is staying with Dallas or
- 35:02Speaker 5: he can go somewhere else.
- 35:03Speaker 7: I know, my brother's a diehard Lakers fan.
- 35:05Speaker 5: Everybody thinks he's going to the Lakers because he's showing
- 35:07Speaker 5: up at the playoff games. At any point, I mean,
- 35:12Speaker 5: in my mind he's a max player. At any point,
- 35:15Speaker 5: did you guys say, you know what because of all
- 35:17Speaker 5: of you know, the news and headlines and where we
- 35:22Speaker 5: not going to get max money, where we're going to
- 35:24Speaker 5: have to take less money to go somewhere else, or
- 35:26Speaker 5: what was the game plan going into the summer.
- 35:29Speaker 10: The game plan was being at a place that you
- 35:33Speaker 10: can consider home, that you were comfortable that you saw
- 35:39Speaker 10: yourself being a main contributor.
- 35:42Speaker 2: So was never about.
- 35:45Speaker 10: Max money as much as it was really about making
- 35:50Speaker 10: sure that this was a place that you felt comfortable
- 35:53Speaker 10: that you felt like you could be really a contributor
- 35:57Speaker 10: at the end of the day, that you like the
- 36:01Speaker 10: people that you were going to, that you were going
- 36:02Speaker 10: to have to work with eighty two games out of
- 36:05Speaker 10: the year, and that was that was the top at
- 36:09Speaker 10: the beginning. That was the most important thing. I think
- 36:12Speaker 10: the money was probably third or fourth. It was always
- 36:16Speaker 10: number one for me because I come from this money
- 36:19Speaker 10: background and this exchange of of of of services and
- 36:22Speaker 10: what that value is. But for him it was really
- 36:26Speaker 10: about money aside, because like I said, he doesn't He
- 36:29Speaker 10: wants to be seen very differently and not from a
- 36:32Speaker 10: monetary a monetary standpoint. For him, it was where do
- 36:38Speaker 10: I feel like I can be at home. One of
- 36:41Speaker 10: the things he did he's never got a chance to
- 36:43Speaker 10: really experience was free agency, and so we wanted to
- 36:46Speaker 10: try to give him that that that ability to be
- 36:49Speaker 10: courted a little bit and told that you're the prettiest
- 36:51Speaker 10: girl at the prom or really prettiest guy at the
- 36:53Speaker 10: at the prom a little bit.
- 36:55Speaker 2: So, uh, that was important.
- 36:57Speaker 10: But I think that when we when we talked about Dallas,
- 37:02Speaker 10: it just checked all the boxes, even though you know,
- 37:05Speaker 10: we kind of looked to the side and said, you
- 37:07Speaker 10: know what else is out there, because you're supposed to
- 37:09Speaker 10: do it.
- 37:10Speaker 2: But Dallas just checked all the boxes that he wanted.
- 37:13Speaker 9: So I mean, can I just go back to this
- 37:15Speaker 9: nigga thing for that? So it's a Chinese company, right,
- 37:19Speaker 9: So we don't really see a lot of these sneakers
- 37:22Speaker 9: people in America.
- 37:23Speaker 4: Where in these sneakers?
- 37:24Speaker 9: So is the idea to make these sneakers popular in
- 37:27Speaker 9: America or it's like global this Stefan Marbury thing where
- 37:32Speaker 9: it's just like just China's enough to actually it's global.
- 37:36Speaker 10: We're working And not to give away a lot of
- 37:39Speaker 10: the secret sauce, but that was a real big part
- 37:41Speaker 10: of our negotiation and our deal was where is this
- 37:47Speaker 10: going to be globally, US Philippines in those areas of
- 37:52Speaker 10: the world where we know that basketball is really big.
- 37:55Speaker 7: Yeah. Took a trip to China this summer.
- 37:57Speaker 4: It was crazy, It looked crazy.
- 38:00Speaker 2: It was insane.
- 38:01Speaker 10: It was one of the probably best trips that that
- 38:05Speaker 10: I've been on in a long time.
- 38:07Speaker 5: Could could not walk the street, couldn't walk anywhere, really
- 38:09Speaker 5: couldn't walk in the air.
- 38:10Speaker 10: I snuck out a little bit because I wanted to
- 38:13Speaker 10: understand we're kind of given this these images of what
- 38:18Speaker 10: China is and what the Chinese marketplace is.
- 38:22Speaker 4: How how was you experienced?
- 38:24Speaker 2: It was amazing.
- 38:26Speaker 10: It was nothing that I thought it would be when
- 38:30Speaker 10: I got on the plane, because you kind of go
- 38:31Speaker 10: in with these stereotypes, and I was a little embarrassed
- 38:35Speaker 10: myself because I'm like, I've always sold black media and
- 38:37Speaker 10: I've always like countered these stereotypes right that people have
- 38:41Speaker 10: of black people, And here it is, I'm walking into
- 38:43Speaker 10: China with certain stereotypes and getting off of that plane
- 38:47Speaker 10: and just saying, just seeing just the energy and the
- 38:51Speaker 10: just love that not only they have for Kai, but
- 38:56Speaker 10: his family and basketball just meant so much and just
- 39:01Speaker 10: walking around.

- 40:54Speaker 1: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 40:58Speaker 1: in Massachusetts. Thirteen gang member from Al Salvador accused of
- 41:03Speaker 1: murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with filming and
- 41:07Speaker 1: selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just some of
- 41:11Speaker 1: the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President Donald J.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Trump's leadership.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I'm Christy Noman, the United States Secretary of Homeland Security.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Under President Trump, Attempted illegal border crossings are at the
- 41:23Speaker 1: lowest levels ever recorded, and over one hundred thousand illegal
- 41:27Speaker 1: aliens have been arrested. If you are here illegally, your
- 41:31Speaker 1: next you will be fine nearly one thousand dollars a day,
- 41:35Speaker 1: imprisoned and deported, you will never return. But if you
- 41:39Speaker 1: register using our CBP home app and leave now, you
- 41:42Speaker 1: could be allowed to return legally. Do what's right.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Leave now.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Under President Trump, America's laws, border and families will be protected.
- 41:52Speaker 3: Sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
- 41:54Speaker 10: Probably not supposed to say this, and I'm sure you
- 41:57Speaker 10: stood out that I was like, let me sneak out
- 41:59Speaker 10: and really see this, not from this curated lens that.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Celebrity.
- 42:06Speaker 10: Yeah, I wanted to see it for myself and embraced.
- 42:11Speaker 10: I would try to speak and and I know I
- 42:15Speaker 10: know none of the language, but they would try to
- 42:17Speaker 10: find somebody to help me to have a conversation. You
- 42:21Speaker 10: saw moms standing there with their sons and their daughters,
- 42:25Speaker 10: and they just have the same They just.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Wanted to see their kids happy.
- 42:28Speaker 10: And that's a universal theme and you just recognize that
- 42:31Speaker 10: all over the world people want the same.
- 42:32Speaker 2: They just want to see their kids happy.
- 42:35Speaker 9: That's an amazing experience because I went to Hong Kong
- 42:37Speaker 9: and my experience is completely different.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Really, I just it was.
- 42:43Speaker 10: It was really a good experience, really a good experience.
- 42:48Speaker 5: So during the summer, this is the first time he's
- 42:51Speaker 5: really going to be a free agent, like you said,
- 42:52Speaker 5: but this is maybe this is the first time, like
- 42:54Speaker 5: you're negotiating the contract, you're a trailblazer. I started by
- 42:59Speaker 5: saying that talk about the pressure or the intensity that
- 43:02Speaker 5: you had to feel to make to make sure that
- 43:05Speaker 5: you get this right, because if you don't, especially for
- 43:08Speaker 5: ourmun if you don't get this right.
- 43:10Speaker 4: I'm done.
- 43:10Speaker 5: You're done, But there might be an there may not
- 43:14Speaker 5: be another chance for a black woman to step in
- 43:15Speaker 5: this place, to show that this is something that's capable
- 43:18Speaker 5: or capable of doing well.
- 43:20Speaker 7: Take us through it.
- 43:22Speaker 2: I didn't sleep for a few days.
- 43:24Speaker 10: I'm thankful that I had a few godfathers, and I
- 43:29Speaker 10: think everybody needs that in any industry that held my
- 43:33Speaker 10: hand ex Players, agents, today, business managers, even some people
- 43:42Speaker 10: in the press that really were instrumental and helpful in
- 43:49Speaker 10: just keeping me sane and giving me advice and talking
- 43:52Speaker 10: to me about what I needed to do and the
- 43:56Speaker 10: thing is that I should consider and all of those things.
- 44:00Speaker 2: So I was really really fortunate. I did not sleep.
- 44:02Speaker 10: There was a lot of pressure because I said, every
- 44:05Speaker 10: everybody in the world is looking and not everybody is
- 44:09Speaker 10: hoping that I'm successful. But most importantly, there was a
- 44:12Speaker 10: coworker that I worked with and she she ran up
- 44:15Speaker 10: to me when I was announced as an agent, and
- 44:17Speaker 10: she said, you know, you give my daughter something to
- 44:19Speaker 10: believe in. And so every day that statement kind of
- 44:23Speaker 10: rung through in my head, where she was like, you
- 44:24Speaker 10: give my daughter something to believe in. And so I
- 44:27Speaker 10: was like, I can't. I can't disappoint this woman's daughters.
- 44:29Speaker 10: I got to make sure that I do this well.
- 44:31Speaker 10: So I was very happy with it with the outcohol.
- 44:36Speaker 7: What were some of the people that you called on
- 44:37Speaker 7: in the.
- 44:38Speaker 10: Space, So I did not confirm if I could use
- 44:42Speaker 10: their name, yeah, because I don't want to.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I don't want to put them out there.
- 44:45Speaker 5: There's a nat that we can say you sat down
- 44:48Speaker 5: with Mark Cuban at some point.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Oh, I love them.
- 44:51Speaker 5: Contracts there, now you're going to once you sign this,
- 44:54Speaker 5: you're on the other side of it. You've actually executed
- 44:57Speaker 5: and you've done it with the world watching.
- 44:59Speaker 7: So how's this conversation going.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Mark is.
- 45:06Speaker 10: Very different than what I expected because I saw Mark
- 45:10Speaker 10: through the lens of Shark Tank and so like that
- 45:16Speaker 10: was what I imagined him being, and not that he
- 45:19Speaker 10: was difficult or anything from that perspective on Shark Tank.
- 45:23Speaker 10: I just expected him to be just very much I
- 45:26Speaker 10: know it all, and this is it and this it's
- 45:28Speaker 10: my way or the highway. And so Mark was very
- 45:32Speaker 10: much inquisitive. He wanted to know all things. He wanted
- 45:37Speaker 10: to know our thoughts. He didn't come across as very
- 45:42Speaker 10: selsy at all. He was really interested. There was more
- 45:46Speaker 10: questions about what do we think where we were we're
- 45:51Speaker 10: worrying the process. He wanted my opinion on some things
- 45:57Speaker 10: that he was working on. So it felt like not
- 46:01Speaker 10: like a transaction. It really felt like you were building
- 46:05Speaker 10: this partnership. And so that's what made it a lot different.
- 46:08Speaker 4: So you got a max contract.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Right, No, slightly under?
- 46:12Speaker 4: Slightly under? Was it?
- 46:16Speaker 7: Was?
- 46:16Speaker 9: There a lot of work and negotiation because I feel
- 46:19Speaker 9: like a lot the contract is pretty much set at
- 46:21Speaker 9: that point, right.
- 46:22Speaker 2: Not necessarily.
- 46:23Speaker 10: So when you have when you look at this CBA
- 46:25Speaker 10: and the salary caps, you have to think about do
- 46:29Speaker 10: you want to be a well in a pond, right
- 46:34Speaker 10: or do you want to be the will in the ocean?
- 46:36Speaker 4: Right?
- 46:37Speaker 10: So you don't want to suck up all of the
- 46:39Speaker 10: money where you're not in a position to kind of
- 46:43Speaker 10: help the team to get the help that they needed
- 46:46Speaker 10: to get to the next level. So those are all
- 46:48Speaker 10: of the things you thought about, was like, how do we.
- 46:52Speaker 2: For us?
- 46:53Speaker 10: Like I said, it was like, how do you become
- 46:54Speaker 10: that benefit? How is the team going to get better?
- 46:56Speaker 10: How are all of those things coming into play?
- 46:59Speaker 9: So what are some things things that just in general
- 47:01Speaker 9: people might not be familiar with, like an NBA contract.
- 47:03Speaker 9: I know some people I think bron has like a
- 47:05Speaker 9: no trade clause, or there's different things that you can
- 47:08Speaker 9: kind of put in games play.
- 47:10Speaker 10: There's no trade clauses, there's there's a there's just a plethora.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Of things that you can include in the contract.
- 47:19Speaker 10: I think that one of the conversations you want to
- 47:22Speaker 10: have is where's where does the team see itself this year,
- 47:26Speaker 10: next year, and the year after, especially during your contract,
- 47:28Speaker 10: because if the team.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Is consistently losing, you know you're gonna get blamed for it.
- 47:34Speaker 4: Said games played, like you have to play a certain
- 47:36Speaker 4: amount of games, play.
- 47:36Speaker 10: A certain amount of games. People have all sorts of contracts,
- 47:42Speaker 10: minutes played.
- 47:44Speaker 2: You just have to kind of figure out what's in
- 47:45Speaker 2: the best, what's big?
- 47:46Speaker 4: What's big now? Is that.
- 47:50Speaker 9: Like if you make an All NBA team, you get
- 47:53Speaker 9: a bonus on your contract?
- 47:55Speaker 2: All Star games, all Star Games.
- 47:57Speaker 4: All Star games? Is that stuff that that part of
- 48:00Speaker 4: Kyrie's deal? Why not?
- 48:04Speaker 2: All NBA is subjective? Yeah, and you don't want to
- 48:08Speaker 2: tie your your money to anything.
- 48:11Speaker 9: That is Uh, well, we saw we saw somebody that
- 48:13Speaker 9: lost a lot of money.
- 48:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he's a great player in Memphis who didn't
- 48:20Speaker 5: make any All NBA teams.
- 48:21Speaker 4: Yeah, and how much did he lose.
- 48:25Speaker 5: Between the door Spence with Nike and tigning bonus. I
- 48:29Speaker 5: think it was forty two. Yeah, right, because he would
- 48:32Speaker 5: have been able to sign a super max because he
- 48:34Speaker 5: would have made one of the first teams. He probably
- 48:36Speaker 5: would have been first Team NBA, but he at least would
- 48:38Speaker 5: have been second team. He doesn't make any of them.
- 48:40Speaker 5: But who does benefit is a guy like Jaylen Brown
- 48:43Speaker 5: who actually made an All NBA team and then signs
- 48:45Speaker 5: of richest contract in the history of NBA.
- 48:48Speaker 9: Yeah, So because he didn't make All NBA team, he
- 48:53Speaker 9: lost his ability to sign a super max.
- 48:56Speaker 7: Unfortunate. Unfortunate. Yeah, I mean that that goes back to it, like.
- 49:01Speaker 10: Those those things that you think about right away.
- 49:06Speaker 5: Obviously, suspended for the first twenty five games I think
- 49:08Speaker 5: this season, so that will affect even if he had
- 49:12Speaker 5: a game's played, But he definitely should have made an
- 49:14Speaker 5: All NBA team. And that's no slight to anybody that
- 49:18Speaker 5: was on those teams.
- 49:19Speaker 4: I mean, it's just obvious. It's obvious.
- 49:23Speaker 9: So yeah, but no, because also when we heard lou
- 49:26Speaker 9: Will speak and lou Will said that it was one
- 49:30Speaker 9: year when he was playing that he felt he should
- 49:33Speaker 9: have been an All Star absolutely, and his coach, I
- 49:37Speaker 9: think Doug Collins was the coach's time, and he sat
- 49:40Speaker 9: down with him and he said, look, you deserve to
- 49:43Speaker 9: be an All Star. He's like, the reserves give the
- 49:46Speaker 9: coach has to nominate the reserves. So he's like, look,
- 49:49Speaker 9: you're the best player on the team. You deserve to
- 49:52Speaker 9: be an All Star. But for the morality scorer on
- 49:55Speaker 9: the team, for the morale of the team, I'm going
- 49:58Speaker 9: to nominate somebody else.
- 50:00Speaker 4: It was.
- 50:00Speaker 7: It was crazy. It was Andrea Godallas.
- 50:03Speaker 9: So but what lou Will said is that that not
- 50:06Speaker 9: only it lost a lot of money because he wasn't
- 50:09Speaker 9: an All Star, but it negatively impacted his career to
- 50:12Speaker 9: the point where he could never start ever again. And
- 50:15Speaker 9: he kind of he said, he lost a lot of
- 50:17Speaker 9: money because of that one decision of him not being
- 50:21Speaker 9: on an All Star team. So politics that go in
- 50:24Speaker 9: to play here that people might not always see.
- 50:28Speaker 10: I just always think that contracts should be one hundred
- 50:31Speaker 10: percent of what you can control, especially when you put
- 50:35Speaker 10: those types of things in a contry.
- 50:37Speaker 4: You don't like the bonus structures.
- 50:38Speaker 10: I just think that if you're going to use a
- 50:40Speaker 10: bonus structure, should be something that you can control, that
- 50:43Speaker 10: you one hundred percent control, versus something that somebody else
- 50:48Speaker 10: has can be manipulated.
- 50:50Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, So you gotta talked about being a
- 50:54Speaker 5: well in the ocean. Right as the agent, you're looking
- 50:58Speaker 5: at everybody's contract on the team because or because I
- 51:02Speaker 5: would imagine if I'm looking at let's I'll use the
- 51:05Speaker 5: Mavericks for example, if I'm looking at Luca and I'm thinking,
- 51:08Speaker 5: all right, he's going to be super MAXI. If we're
- 51:09Speaker 5: looking at the future of the team, how we're going
- 51:11Speaker 5: to build to south, I might have to fall out
- 51:13Speaker 5: this number so that we can help still build people
- 51:16Speaker 5: around this core to win the championship.
- 51:19Speaker 7: So like, you're not looking at those.
- 51:21Speaker 10: Or I mean, I'm not looking at anybody's contracts on
- 51:26Speaker 10: the on the team per se. You're just looking at
- 51:29Speaker 10: how how is the team going to look?
- 51:32Speaker 2: Right?
- 51:34Speaker 10: It starts first with do you feel like you want
- 51:38Speaker 10: to be in Dallas? Is this the place you want
- 51:40Speaker 10: to be? And when that was said, yes, this is
- 51:43Speaker 10: this is where I want to be. Okay, what do
- 51:47Speaker 10: you think that you need to feel comfortable there and
- 51:51Speaker 10: then you go from there.
- 51:52Speaker 9: So you have one client who was a good client
- 51:56Speaker 9: to have because he's one of the best athletes started
- 51:58Speaker 9: the top.
- 51:59Speaker 4: But you say your goal is to expand and to
- 52:01Speaker 4: get other clients.
- 52:02Speaker 9: Right, So have you actively started to recruit other players
- 52:06Speaker 9: or not? And what is your sales pitch or your
- 52:11Speaker 9: pitch to somebody for you to represent them.
- 52:15Speaker 2: We passively.
- 52:17Speaker 10: Have started to have a conversation with players and potential.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Picks for the NBA.
- 52:29Speaker 10: For us, it's we don't want everybody, and I know
- 52:34Speaker 10: that that sounds because we're really about how can we help.
- 52:38Speaker 10: We want to be the the agent. That's not like
- 52:42Speaker 10: we're just signing you know I'm gonna sign you, and
- 52:43Speaker 10: I'm gonna sign you and I just showed when there's
- 52:47Speaker 10: the contract.
- 52:48Speaker 2: We want to really.
- 52:52Speaker 10: Be a active and an engine in your career. And
- 52:58Speaker 10: so for that, it's as much as we're talking to people,
- 53:03Speaker 10: we want them to interview us. We want to interview
- 53:05Speaker 10: them and really figure out how we can help. Because
- 53:08Speaker 10: there's some people that we can help in some people
- 53:10Speaker 10: that we we we can't and we don't want to
- 53:14Speaker 10: waste anybody's time.
- 53:15Speaker 2: So That's why I it's very passive. I've had people.
- 53:19Speaker 10: That's like, hey, you know, I'm ready to sign, and
- 53:20Speaker 10: you're like, I don't know if I can help you,
- 53:23Speaker 10: and I don't want to waste your time.
- 53:24Speaker 4: So who would be a ideal person?
- 53:26Speaker 9: Like who would you what's the prototype of a person
- 53:28Speaker 9: that you say I want to work with this guy?
- 53:31Speaker 10: A person who understands what they really want and it's
- 53:36Speaker 10: and it's bigger than just I want a lot of money,
- 53:40Speaker 10: Like what are the accomplishments, what are the goals, what's
- 53:42Speaker 10: the family?
- 53:43Speaker 2: Like how important are they?
- 53:51Speaker 10: It's somebody that is in some ways like cod they
- 53:58Speaker 10: want to be humanitarian, in a lot of ways, they
- 54:02Speaker 10: want to do a good job.
- 54:05Speaker 2: We're not into a lot of egos.
- 54:08Speaker 10: We want to figure out how we can like like
- 54:10Speaker 10: it really goes to how you can. We're not trying
- 54:13Speaker 10: to be the biggest, We're not trying to be the celebrity.
- 54:16Speaker 10: Like we're not trying to sign, you know, deals for
- 54:18Speaker 10: ourselves or do it?
- 54:20Speaker 2: Like we want to sign.
- 54:21Speaker 10: Deals for the people that we work with, and what
- 54:24Speaker 10: does that look like and how do we help? And
- 54:27Speaker 10: so in some cases we've been consultants for people and
- 54:30Speaker 10: kind of giving them some advice and how to move
- 54:33Speaker 10: forward and what we think and what we see. So
- 54:36Speaker 10: for us, it's what is that person that really makes
- 54:41Speaker 10: sense for all even because it's how do we create
- 54:45Speaker 10: family offices?
- 54:47Speaker 2: How do we.
- 54:49Speaker 10: Teach you and instruct you and help your family to
- 54:52Speaker 10: do the same thing that we're doing.
- 54:53Speaker 5: Is it relegated to basketball specifically the NBA or are
- 54:57Speaker 5: we open to women's professional sports?
- 55:00Speaker 7: Nil?
- 55:01Speaker 2: With nil? Yeah, right, the proper between.
- 55:04Speaker 5: Yeah, because the WNBA, I think that the highest rated
- 55:07Speaker 5: game was during the finals this year.
- 55:09Speaker 7: The popularities increase and it's so it's a good game.
- 55:12Speaker 10: Easy to me when you think about women and our
- 55:15Speaker 10: economic powers that WNBA players don't.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Make the money that they should be making. It's just
- 55:22Speaker 2: so crazy to me.
- 55:23Speaker 10: And I understand the economics in in that part of it, but.
- 55:28Speaker 2: It's just it just is so great. They should be
- 55:30Speaker 2: making so much more.
- 55:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:31Speaker 5: I think Kelsey Plump said it, Champion Kelsey Plumb, by
- 55:34Speaker 5: the way, well saying it, we're still a baby, like
- 55:37Speaker 5: we just celebrated twenty five years. If we compare, I mean,
- 55:41Speaker 5: the times are different, but the trajectory of where it's
- 55:44Speaker 5: headed is definitely on the upward and so having representation,
- 55:48Speaker 5: I would just from that standpoint, have a representation of
- 55:50Speaker 5: like I don't have to have a male agia, you don't,
- 55:53Speaker 5: I can have you could be representing it. So like
- 55:55Speaker 5: is that on the vision board for Okay?
- 55:58Speaker 10: So we want to make sure we're being an ass
- 56:00Speaker 10: it and we're really helping because we're a baby ourselves.
- 56:04Speaker 7: Right.
- 56:05Speaker 4: So you see who's who's on your team?
- 56:08Speaker 2: Kyrie's dad. Uh, he is the chief financial officer.
- 56:14Speaker 10: Yeah, and and that's just really based on his expertise
- 56:19Speaker 10: in that financial business world.
- 56:22Speaker 7: We met in the elevator in Utah. Yeah, the man,
- 56:26Speaker 7: solid guy. He said he loves what we're doing. Yeah, uh,
- 56:28Speaker 7: and it's proud of us. And I was like, yo,
- 56:31Speaker 7: that was that.
- 56:32Speaker 10: Yeah, Yeah, he's brilliant. He's brilliant in that financial does
- 56:39Speaker 10: space does ky?
- 56:40Speaker 4: All Right?
- 56:40Speaker 9: So you you guys family business. Is Kai interested in
- 56:45Speaker 9: the business? Is he involved in the business?
- 56:47Speaker 10: Ultimately, once he's done, the goal would be to just
- 56:51Speaker 10: kind of pass it on to him.
- 56:53Speaker 2: So once he's done playing, pass.
- 56:57Speaker 10: It on and I can retire and his dad retire,
- 57:00Speaker 10: we can run around and act like we're twenty some years.
- 57:04Speaker 7: So that's that is that the goal for all even yeah,
- 57:07Speaker 7: is to we're gonna.
- 57:09Speaker 4: Build it up, build it.
- 57:10Speaker 10: Up ultimately at some at some point, because I think
- 57:13Speaker 10: at that point Kyle would have enough experience to really
- 57:17Speaker 10: really uh be a real agent of change for for
- 57:22Speaker 10: players come into the industry.
- 57:25Speaker 9: How do you look at his role as like he's
- 57:27Speaker 9: the closest thing probably to like Muhammad Ali for generation
- 57:30Speaker 9: as far as he's he's taking stances, he's become a controversial,
- 57:36Speaker 9: polarizing figure. He's become a he's become like adored by
- 57:42Speaker 9: the public in a way that even outweighs his his
- 57:45Speaker 9: talent level, right, Like, it's not a lot of athletes
- 57:48Speaker 9: that have that level of you know, respect from the
- 57:53Speaker 9: population or can be polarizing to population, depending on what side,
- 57:57Speaker 9: what side you're on. But yeah, how does he even
- 58:02Speaker 9: think about that aspect of it? Not yet if you
- 58:06Speaker 9: think about it, he's the only one. Colin Kaepernick played
- 58:09Speaker 9: a part, but he's not even he's not an athlete anymore,
- 58:13Speaker 9: and so he's not even like really in the mix.
- 58:17Speaker 9: But as far as athletes now, there's no athlete that
- 58:20Speaker 9: really has ever pushed the line in the last like
- 58:23Speaker 9: Jalen Brown is doing it in a non traditional way
- 58:26Speaker 9: for sure, and.
- 58:27Speaker 5: Like Lebron and those guys, they've they've they've done it
- 58:31Speaker 5: in their way, like Lebron.
- 58:32Speaker 9: I'm saying as far as some of the controversy right
- 58:35Speaker 9: because Muhammad Ali was a very controversy.
- 58:37Speaker 10: I'm saying controversy because I think it has such a.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Negative connotation to it.
- 58:44Speaker 10: And I think that the more we say, oh, it's
- 58:46Speaker 10: it's a controversial thing or a controversial moment, I think
- 58:52Speaker 10: we're reinforcing that this is something that's negatively right.
- 58:56Speaker 2: And so I think that we have to figure out,
- 58:59Speaker 2: and I don't know what.
- 58:59Speaker 10: That word it is today, how not to when athletes
- 59:03Speaker 10: are standing up for what they believe in, whether we
- 59:07Speaker 10: whether we think it's right or wrong or indifferent, figure
- 59:09Speaker 10: out what that word is to describe that. Because I
- 59:13Speaker 10: think that we all are given, you know, we all
- 59:16Speaker 10: or afforded this idea of choice, especially in this country.
- 59:21Speaker 10: So I think we got to figure out for sure.
- 59:24Speaker 9: I don't really look at it as like a negative
- 59:26Speaker 9: thing per se. I just look at it as like
- 59:29Speaker 9: America is a very divisive country. Yeah, just is what
- 59:32Speaker 9: it is right and it's split, it's split between black
- 59:35Speaker 9: and white, it's split between rich and poor, split a
- 59:37Speaker 9: lot of different ways. So I feel like sometimes some
- 59:40Speaker 9: people make stances, and if you make a stance, if
- 59:44Speaker 9: you have enough courage to make a stance, you have
- 59:47Speaker 9: to deal with the consequences of that correct And no
- 59:49Speaker 9: matter what that stance is, it's almost always going to
- 59:52Speaker 9: be controversial.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Right, There's always a consequence.
- 59:55Speaker 4: There's always a consequence.
- 59:56Speaker 9: There's always a consequence, and there's always going to be
- 59:58Speaker 9: a lot of people that don't agree with it correct. Right,
- 1:00:01Speaker 9: So for the most part, most people, you can't take
- 1:00:04Speaker 9: the Michael Jordan approach where you just play it safe.
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: Nothing wrong with that. I'm just saying that that's what
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: most athletes have done for the last thirty years. You
- 1:00:14Speaker 9: don't really get into political stuff. You don't really make
- 1:00:17Speaker 9: too many social stances. You know, you just kind of
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: like just stay out of that because it's not beneficial
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: to your brand. Right, You're gonna lose a lot of money,
- 1:00:25Speaker 9: You're gonna lose support. I mean, it's just a real conversation.
- 1:00:29Speaker 9: But there's some athletes that didn't care about that. Muhammad
- 1:00:33Speaker 9: Ali is somebody that comes to mind who lost a
- 1:00:36Speaker 9: lot of money by not wanting to go to war.
- 1:00:38Speaker 9: He could have just went to Vietnam. He wasn't gonna
- 1:00:41Speaker 9: fight as a soldier, could have just you know, did
- 1:00:43Speaker 9: some tours and detained the soldiers. But his belief, his
- 1:00:47Speaker 9: religious belief, and just his moral belief said he didn't
- 1:00:51Speaker 9: want to do that. And he took a court case
- 1:00:53Speaker 9: all the way to Supreme Court so he didn't have
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: to go to jail. Lost two years, three years of
- 1:00:57Speaker 9: his career in the prime of his career, lost a
- 1:00:58Speaker 9: lot of money. But ultimately he's known for something more
- 1:01:03Speaker 9: than just boxing.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:01:06Speaker 9: So that's what I mean by that, right, Like I
- 1:01:08Speaker 9: look at Kyrie, like, you know, he didn't have to
- 1:01:11Speaker 9: He could have just took the vaccine they're gonna just
- 1:01:14Speaker 9: nobody would have Nobody would have thought anything of it
- 1:01:17Speaker 9: because everybody else did. But it's like you made a stance,
- 1:01:20Speaker 9: and then he probably didn't do it to become a public.
- 1:01:22Speaker 10: If it's making a stance as much as if he
- 1:01:26Speaker 10: was in anywhere else in the world where there was
- 1:01:28Speaker 10: not a man day, would it have been him making
- 1:01:32Speaker 10: a stance?
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Sometimes I think it would have been a choice.
- 1:01:36Speaker 9: Sometimes you get highlighted without even like Marshall Lynch said,
- 1:01:41Speaker 9: he never stood for the national anthem. It's just the
- 1:01:43Speaker 9: public highlighted Colan Kaepernick. Right, Sometimes you do things and
- 1:01:48Speaker 9: it's like he's not the only player that didn't take
- 1:01:50Speaker 9: the vaccine, but for whatever reason, he's the one that
- 1:01:53Speaker 9: became the face of it, right, they needed to face right.
- 1:01:57Speaker 9: And sometimes that's not up to you. You can't control it.
- 1:02:01Speaker 9: But sometimes people just put things on you and if
- 1:02:06Speaker 9: you make that decision, now you have no choice but
- 1:02:08Speaker 9: to live with it.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:02:09Speaker 10: And I think so here's the thing I'll always say
- 1:02:12Speaker 10: about we all make choices, right. I think that I
- 1:02:20Speaker 10: don't ever want to say that that a choice is
- 1:02:22Speaker 10: a controversial choice, especially when if you weren't anywhere else
- 1:02:28Speaker 10: that didn't have the same mandate, it would not have
- 1:02:32Speaker 10: been considered a controversy.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: It would just be like, oh, it just made a
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: choice not to get it done. That's fine.
- 1:02:37Speaker 10: And so that's just that's why I sit on this
- 1:02:41Speaker 10: this place of how do we because when we say
- 1:02:45Speaker 10: taking a stand, it still has a negative kind of connotation.
- 1:02:49Speaker 10: And I would love to figure out what is a
- 1:02:51Speaker 10: better word the political content, Yeah, like whether or not
- 1:02:54Speaker 10: you know, and I think moral has a I think
- 1:02:56Speaker 10: we got to figure out a word. And I think
- 1:02:58Speaker 10: like the next time I come to sit with you, like,
- 1:03:02Speaker 10: let's figure out what that word is for.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: People that.
- 1:03:08Speaker 10: Are standing up for you know, the food desert so
- 1:03:11Speaker 10: food scarcity or education and all in health and all
- 1:03:17Speaker 10: of these things, because I don't want those are very
- 1:03:19Speaker 10: important issues that are impact in our community, and I
- 1:03:22Speaker 10: don't want there to be well, this is controversial because
- 1:03:25Speaker 10: you said it is not right that kids go, you know,
- 1:03:28Speaker 10: have are concerned about food in their homes, are that
- 1:03:32Speaker 10: there are food deserts in their communities. Right, I don't
- 1:03:34Speaker 10: want that word controversy to stand. And if we can
- 1:03:38Speaker 10: use what Kyrie went through through through through the vaccine
- 1:03:41Speaker 10: and say hey, we're going to change that and we're
- 1:03:42Speaker 10: going to create this new word and basically make that
- 1:03:46Speaker 10: a word of positivity. When you're saying this is not
- 1:03:49Speaker 10: right and this is a choice that I'm not aligned with.
- 1:03:52Speaker 9: Well, it all comes down to media. Yeah, that's why
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: the media is really the most important thing in society
- 1:03:58Speaker 9: because they can shape the minds of the people. So
- 1:04:01Speaker 9: we can't control as a regular people, we can't control it.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: But media can, so he didn't. The controversy comes from.
- 1:04:10Speaker 9: The media saying that he's irresponsible and da da da da.
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: So when that narrative is pushed now it becomes controversial.
- 1:04:19Speaker 10: But I think coming from media, and I used to
- 1:04:23Speaker 10: go through all of the emails and read the comments,
- 1:04:27Speaker 10: when people stand up and say it's not right, you
- 1:04:32Speaker 10: shut a lot of that down. And so there are
- 1:04:35Speaker 10: communities that you cannot say anything.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: You can't like no, no, no, no, no, you're not going to
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: say this, You're not going to do this. I'm gonna
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: shut that down.
- 1:04:43Speaker 10: And I think we have to be just as vocal
- 1:04:46Speaker 10: and I'm not going to allow you to sugarcoat this.
- 1:04:49Speaker 10: I'm gonna shut this down and make you enforce you
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: not to make this a negative.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: But I think it also is harder when it's coming
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: from people.
- 1:05:01Speaker 10: No, no, it's not I think that I think and
- 1:05:03Speaker 10: not to to to debate.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I think that if we stand together.
- 1:05:09Speaker 9: Well that's what I'm saying, there's no standing together. It's divided.
- 1:05:14Speaker 9: Black people are the ones that's criticizing. So it's like
- 1:05:17Speaker 9: it's harder to say, like you know what I mean,
- 1:05:19Speaker 9: like you have disagree, I have to disagree you have
- 1:05:22Speaker 9: no black community support, Carrie. Yeah, you have prominent black
- 1:05:26Speaker 9: journalists television.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, that's different or.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: Publicly like these are these are not just regular people.
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: These are the highest people of their craft, highly respected
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: in journalism that's publicly denouncing him.
- 1:05:44Speaker 10: I've had those conversations, and I've you know, and I'll
- 1:05:50Speaker 10: leave that private. But I have gone back and sort
- 1:05:53Speaker 10: of had those conversations. And there is a certain power
- 1:05:58Speaker 10: that media does have, and there are certain forces at
- 1:06:04Speaker 10: some of these media companies that demand certain responses to
- 1:06:09Speaker 10: certain things.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: So I get it, I understand it.
- 1:06:13Speaker 10: What I wanted to just make sure that I clarify
- 1:06:16Speaker 10: was that the black community, the Hispanic community, the black
- 1:06:22Speaker 10: and brown community was really supportive of Hot They were like,
- 1:06:26Speaker 10: hands down.
- 1:06:28Speaker 9: That's why I compare it to yeah, Lean, I don't
- 1:06:30Speaker 9: want to compare people, but it's like he always had
- 1:06:32Speaker 9: a support it to people. Yeah, but the people that
- 1:06:35Speaker 9: are in position of power or in the media, that's
- 1:06:38Speaker 9: that's not the people.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: It there's a disconnect. So, I mean, that's interesting. I'm
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: hearing from what I'm hearing that was great back and forth.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: The media has a job to do and sometimes we
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: don't understand what the person who's saying it, the pressure
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: that's been put on them to have a stance correct
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: and make sort of a spectacle of their response of it,
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: because they need people to watch and they need viewership,
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: and what comes with viewership comes.
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: With they need a job or they need to sponsorships.
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: They need the job is the money that's going to
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: be paying most times for the salaries of the people
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: that are on the air. Which is interesting, right, because
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: that's a deeper perspective for people to look at, especially
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: from the audience standpoint. But a lot of times you
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: hear them say I spoke to his dad or I
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: spoke to his agent, and so that's what I'm going, right,
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: So I'm thinking, like, really, did you really? How often
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: does that happen?
- 1:07:32Speaker 10: And when it's mischieved, it happens all the time. And
- 1:07:35Speaker 10: there are times that I like came in and said
- 1:07:38Speaker 10: stuff and said no, that that that that that was
- 1:07:42Speaker 10: not what was.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: Said, spoke to a source close to the family.
- 1:07:47Speaker 10: Yeah, And those those are like because I said, I've
- 1:07:50Speaker 10: just said to people and uh and I stand by this,
- 1:07:54Speaker 10: you can use my name not like that, And they're like, wait,
- 1:07:59Speaker 10: what I said, yeah, you can use my name, and
- 1:08:02Speaker 10: you don't have to say sources. Say, you don't have
- 1:08:04Speaker 10: to say friend of the family. You can use my name,
- 1:08:06Speaker 10: and when I give you the authority to use my name,
- 1:08:08Speaker 10: you can run with it. And so therefore there's never
- 1:08:12Speaker 10: any confusion about sources close to the family, because a
- 1:08:17Speaker 10: lot of that went on because that was people's way
- 1:08:19Speaker 10: of saying, Hey, I talked to the neighbor who lived
- 1:08:23Speaker 10: five houses down across the street, the cousin who said
- 1:08:29Speaker 10: and it's not accurate because and in some cases people
- 1:08:33Speaker 10: may have presented themselves as in the know. And I'm
- 1:08:38Speaker 10: not saying that journalism is faulty or but I think
- 1:08:42Speaker 10: that in some cases people are presented themselves as being
- 1:08:45Speaker 10: an insider and did not understand the impact of what
- 1:08:51Speaker 10: they were saying.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: Or yeah, I'm leave that there.
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: Yeah you can leave it right there, because I'm now
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: I'm looking at it from both standpoints, right like there's
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: a parent standpoint and then there's an agent standpoint. Both
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: try to curate an environment. People who look that person
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: shouldn't be, like, I don't think they should be around.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: Do you need to make that circle a lot tighter
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: during that whole process. He said that very public, like
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: there's a lot of people that I thought I tried.
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: Now my circle is super tight. Are those separate conversations?
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: Are they in one right? As an agent as a
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: parent from protective of somebody that you've known since eight
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: years old, two separate conversations.
- 1:09:32Speaker 10: Yeah, there's a conversation of agent where it's what is
- 1:09:36Speaker 10: good for the brand, and then there's the conversation as
- 1:09:40Speaker 10: parent where that person.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Will get you in trouble.
- 1:09:44Speaker 10: Two different conversations, two different tones, two different everything. So
- 1:09:49Speaker 10: the agent conversation is that's not good for your brand,
- 1:09:52Speaker 10: and here's why, and here's all the proof. The parent conversation,
- 1:09:56Speaker 10: and you've had this with your kids. That person right there,
- 1:10:00Speaker 10: you right now, don't call me because that person is
- 1:10:02Speaker 10: going to get you in a lot of trouble.
- 1:10:05Speaker 9: So how is your experience being a black woman in
- 1:10:08Speaker 9: a male dominated industry.
- 1:10:13Speaker 10: I there are times that it pops up. So I
- 1:10:17Speaker 10: remember I was in a meeting and this is a
- 1:10:20Speaker 10: higher up meeting and I was the only woman in
- 1:10:24Speaker 10: the room, and it was I was not seen. And
- 1:10:30Speaker 10: then there are other times that it's celebrated where guys
- 1:10:36Speaker 10: are like, hey, I want to make sure that I
- 1:10:39Speaker 10: help you, that I support you because I love what
- 1:10:41Speaker 10: it is that you're doing. So it's just it just
- 1:10:44Speaker 10: depends on the moment, it depends on the culture, it
- 1:10:47Speaker 10: depends on where people are, where it pops up, and
- 1:10:52Speaker 10: sometimes it doesn't and people are just like, hey, it's
- 1:10:55Speaker 10: there's an emphasis on making sure that you're successful.
- 1:10:59Speaker 7: From an age of stamp point of MAXI and as
- 1:11:00Speaker 7: an agent.
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:11:02Speaker 7: Athletes have other interests. Are investing.
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: Obviously dad's a CFO, so it's finance, investing in real
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: estate style. Are those things that we're having conversations about
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: angel invest investing? Are we having conversations about that?
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: His dad is tough in that. I bring the opportunity
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: because I'm a girl.
- 1:11:22Speaker 10: I like the shop, so I look at everything and
- 1:11:24Speaker 10: I'm like yep, yep, yep, and his dad's like nope,
- 1:11:27Speaker 10: what were you thinking?
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Nope, nope, no.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: So he handles all the finance. Yeah, he really before you.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Invest, Yeah, he does a lot of that.
- 1:11:36Speaker 10: And then Kai has you know, another team as well,
- 1:11:38Speaker 10: so he's like, there, we have what we created because
- 1:11:43Speaker 10: I'm the shopper was levels of.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: Investment levels.
- 1:11:49Speaker 10: So we run it through all of these levels to
- 1:11:52Speaker 10: make sure that none of us are missing anything. So
- 1:11:54Speaker 10: we have our legal team, we have our tax and
- 1:11:56Speaker 10: accounting team to make sure that this makes sense. We
- 1:12:00Speaker 10: have another team that sort of looks at it and
- 1:12:02Speaker 10: if everybody kind of signs off on it and says
- 1:12:04Speaker 10: this is good, then we present it to Kai and
- 1:12:07Speaker 10: kind of get his feedback on it. Now, some people
- 1:12:11Speaker 10: are like, I hate that that you have to talk
- 1:12:13Speaker 10: to so many different people, but it just works for
- 1:12:16Speaker 10: us in terms of because there's things that you know,
- 1:12:19Speaker 10: I may miss, his dad may miss, and if you
- 1:12:21Speaker 10: have so many people looking at it, it just kind
- 1:12:23Speaker 10: of keeps everybody solid.
- 1:12:24Speaker 7: It's tough to miss when everybody's looking.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:12:29Speaker 9: I feel like the agent's responsibility is also to protect
- 1:12:32Speaker 9: their client. So is that part of your your job
- 1:12:38Speaker 9: title as well? Like do you look at okay before
- 1:12:41Speaker 9: he speaks here, let me look at it.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: Do I do this?
- 1:12:44Speaker 9: Do I look at the photo shoot to make sure
- 1:12:46Speaker 9: the picture is like is that?
- 1:12:48Speaker 10: Yeah, every every which way. Sometimes he does this. All
- 1:12:53Speaker 10: of my kids do this, and that's the that's their
- 1:12:56Speaker 10: way of pushing me back to say, you're becoming a
- 1:12:59Speaker 10: little too much.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: But yeah, every every everything.
- 1:13:03Speaker 9: So what is what's on the vision board for you
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: and your company over the next couple of years. I
- 1:13:07Speaker 9: know obviously you said that you know you're looking to
- 1:13:09Speaker 9: expand and get more clients. But what yeah, how how
- 1:13:12Speaker 9: was you like, Yeah, your enterprise to being So.
- 1:13:15Speaker 10: We want to do probably in the next two to
- 1:13:17Speaker 10: three years, like a billion dollars in deals in deals. Yeah,
- 1:13:21Speaker 10: So that's that's on our most immediate The other side
- 1:13:26Speaker 10: of it is obviously bringing in clients. And so we
- 1:13:31Speaker 10: have that magic number of where we want to be
- 1:13:34Speaker 10: by way of clients over the next two to three years.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: And is there new clients from college or a client
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: in college or a like mixture, mixture of veterans.
- 1:13:45Speaker 10: Yeah, veterans, uh, college, just that that whole mixture we
- 1:13:53Speaker 10: want to We've talked a lot about creating a collective
- 1:13:57Speaker 10: of independent agents that that we can use.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: As a resource.
- 1:14:02Speaker 10: I've had a lot of conversations with Jalen's brother Q
- 1:14:07Speaker 10: about how can we because there's a lot of this
- 1:14:10Speaker 10: thought of independence that a lot of players and athletes
- 1:14:13Speaker 10: are thinking about, and so how do we be this resource,
- 1:14:16Speaker 10: this collective resource? And I'm excellent at this, You're excellent
- 1:14:21Speaker 10: at that. How do we bring it together and really
- 1:14:22Speaker 10: create this agent collective that we can all pull and
- 1:14:28Speaker 10: grow and create from. So we're just having those conversations
- 1:14:34Speaker 10: and that's that's pretty much it.
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't want the media is important, and I
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: think as our platform, I want to highlight the philanthropy
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: that happens from your side and your team. And obviously
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: every time there's been an issue or because we've always
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: seen Kyrie do need, does.
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: It get highlighted? Probably should more so I would I
- 1:14:57Speaker 7: want to give you the floyd to talk about all
- 1:14:59Speaker 7: the planthropy that you've been doing over the past three
- 1:15:01Speaker 7: to five years, because it's a lot.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: It is a lot, it's a lot.
- 1:15:07Speaker 10: A lot of it is we want to be angels
- 1:15:10Speaker 10: in this because the minute that it becomes public, you
- 1:15:15Speaker 10: get flooded with everybody.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: Has a need. Some of those needs are authentic, some
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: of them are not.
- 1:15:22Speaker 10: But I know that Kay's focus is on entrepreneurship, women, maternity,
- 1:15:31Speaker 10: and health for women that are having babies and look
- 1:15:35Speaker 10: to expand their families. And that's something very different from
- 1:15:38Speaker 10: an athlete that you would say, why would an athlete
- 1:15:41Speaker 10: be interested in it? We know the mortality rates that
- 1:15:44Speaker 10: exist for black women and given birth. So that's something
- 1:15:48Speaker 10: that he really wants to kind of get behind and.
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: Figure out pathways for. It is.
- 1:15:57Speaker 10: The Native American community. How do we create opportunity there?
- 1:16:02Speaker 10: And we're working on something that we hope to announce
- 1:16:04Speaker 10: relatively soon where that would create a pipeline of opportunity
- 1:16:09Speaker 10: and monetary gain for within that community. It is food scarcity,
- 1:16:17Speaker 10: food deserts. How do we help out there? It is education.
- 1:16:22Speaker 10: It is financial literacy because, like I said, we as
- 1:16:27Speaker 10: people of color, we're raising our hands left and right
- 1:16:30Speaker 10: and saying, help me invest, Teach me about money, because
- 1:16:33Speaker 10: there's so much that we don't understand and know.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Mental health is another one that is.
- 1:16:38Speaker 10: A big focus for us in recognizing that we all
- 1:16:45Speaker 10: have needs. It's not you know, and you should not
- 1:16:48Speaker 10: be ashamed to say that. There are days that I
- 1:16:51Speaker 10: wake up and.
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: I'm just.
- 1:16:54Speaker 10: And there are things that are going on that I
- 1:16:55Speaker 10: need to talk to somebody about. And so we're just
- 1:16:57Speaker 10: trying to figure out pathways to create opportunities for people
- 1:17:03Speaker 10: to have real, honest conversations about mental health and those
- 1:17:06Speaker 10: issues that a lot of people are battling in silence.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: So that's that's the name.
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: A few yes, and we thank you.
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: That's a lot.
- 1:17:14Speaker 7: We thank you because we see it for sure.
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: So yeah, thank you for joining us. Met the whole family.
- 1:17:20Speaker 9: Now your husband, like you said, we met him in Utah,
- 1:17:23Speaker 9: had a great conversation and Kyle, we got to spend
- 1:17:26Speaker 9: some time with him, so I know he's actually watches
- 1:17:29Speaker 9: the program, so shout out to him. Definitely the best
- 1:17:32Speaker 9: ball hands I love of all the time we have.
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: That's a fact. That's a fact. We're not arguing that. Yeah,
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: that's a fact.
- 1:17:38Speaker 9: Well, just just a good dude, like I said, and
- 1:17:40Speaker 9: you know, we spent a couple of hours with him.
- 1:17:42Speaker 9: You just kind of get a feel for somebody. So
- 1:17:43Speaker 9: he was very low key, reserved, like person were talking
- 1:17:47Speaker 9: about rap, Yeah, were talking about rap, you know, just
- 1:17:51Speaker 9: a variety of different things.
- 1:17:53Speaker 7: We was right. Just for the record, we was right,
- 1:17:55Speaker 7: me and you We was right.
- 1:17:56Speaker 9: So yeah, we had a lot, We had a lot
- 1:17:58Speaker 9: of We had a great conversation. So shout out to Kyrie.
- 1:18:00Speaker 9: But keep up the great work. You know, it's definitely
- 1:18:03Speaker 9: needed to highlight people like yourself because there's a lot
- 1:18:07Speaker 9: of young ladies that I'm sure probably want to get
- 1:18:10Speaker 9: into the world of sports, but don't know how, right,
- 1:18:12Speaker 9: and then it's like if you don't have a road
- 1:18:14Speaker 9: map to follow up, even if you just have somebody
- 1:18:16Speaker 9: look at like I'm sure you know a lot of
- 1:18:19Speaker 9: people have looked at Rich Paul as somebody that's breaking
- 1:18:21Speaker 9: the mold.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: I'll say, he's he's about godfathers.
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: Rich. Shout out to Rich.
- 1:18:28Speaker 9: A friend of the friend of the rich investments godfather
- 1:18:32Speaker 9: go invest fest too. So you know, but people like
- 1:18:34Speaker 9: that is important, right because they're not coming from traditional paths.
- 1:18:38Speaker 9: So you know, it gives hope and inspiration to people.
- 1:18:42Speaker 9: So that's definitely important. So keep up the great work. Yeah,
- 1:18:48Speaker 9: let's continue to stay in dialogue, Let's continue to work
- 1:18:50Speaker 9: together and anything that we can do to be of help.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: Just let us know.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: Thank you. I appreciate you, guys. I had a good time.
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: Oh, thank you for coming.
- 1:18:57Speaker 9: Appreciate it. Appreciate it all right, guys, thank you for
- 1:19:00Speaker 9: rocking us. To see you next week.
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: Peace. Peace.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from Al Salvador
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy Noman, the United States
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: are here illegally, your next you will be fine nearly
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned and deported, you will
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: never return. But if you register using our CBP home
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: Do what's right.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: Leave now.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Under President Trump, America's laws, border and families will be protected.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: Sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
