- 0:22Well, let's skip back to your classic list then for your top
- 0:27ten. Number one or #10 technically
- 0:30right? OK #10 let me see, what are we
- 0:32going to go for from this list? Best Classic 10.
- 0:41I'm going to say it's the greatest show in the Galaxy.
- 0:45Oh, the greatest show in the Galaxy.
- 0:47Apart from that bit, I don't that is horrendous.
- 0:50But aside aside from that, the McCoy era is one that I
- 0:54struggled with a lot when I first.
- 0:56I think just tonally it's such a shift from anything like so when
- 1:03I can't remember. I've spoken about it on one of
- 1:05these before, but the beginning of 2023 or 2024 whenever.
- 1:11It was a couple of years ago, probably even longer to be
- 1:14honest, but I started watching an episode every day on my
- 1:18dinner break of the classic series.
- 1:21So I was basically took me about two years to run through the
- 1:24whole lot. But I think that's a really nice
- 1:25way to do it because it means you're not watching chunks of
- 1:28stuff that was meant to be weekly.
- 1:31It's a nice sort of 25 minute. I'll get half.
- 1:33An hour make you reconsider some stories when you when you eek
- 1:36them out like that. I think so, yeah.
- 1:38I think any. And I still don't remember the
- 1:40mutants, but still the, there's a, there's something about that
- 1:46that makes you realise how elastic the show, the show's
- 1:52format is that I think it really brings home the changes and the
- 1:57reason that people look less fondly on the 80s than like
- 2:03people who grew up watching it in the 80s.
- 2:05I think I get the impression that that obviously they all
- 2:07love it or that they, you know, they are from it.
- 2:09But if you grew up in the 60s watching it, you can see why
- 2:13people would go. This is not the same show.
- 2:15And I think the the biggest handbrake turned is from Colin
- 2:20into Sylvester. And people go one or two ways.
- 2:23I I find that they either reject it outright or they love it
- 2:28wholeheartedly. Yeah, and I think there was a
- 2:31few, there was a few Mccoys on this on my sort of shortlist for
- 2:35this because it but it took me a long time and there's a lot I'd
- 2:39still like to go back and revisit.
- 2:40But I think I've, you know, my character is very much that of
- 2:44if, if I don't like it, I want to watch it again and I want to
- 2:46understand why I didn't like it because other people like it.
- 2:48So why would I not like it? Which is why there's stuff on
- 2:51there that I'll have stuff on this that I'll have only seen
- 2:53once, despite the fact that I love it and stuff that I hate
- 2:58that I've seen more than once. Warriors Gate because I just
- 3:02because I need to understand. So the greatest show in the
- 3:06Galaxy was I think. I'm trying to think where does
- 3:10that fall? Because I'm not.
- 3:11Very good with my seasons. It's the so it's the end of his
- 3:13second season, the end of 25. I think this is probably the
- 3:16point then really that I was, I was starting to get to the point
- 3:19where I was like, no, I, I, I'm, I'm starting to see what people
- 3:22like in this, in this doctor in this era, because I think it
- 3:29takes that long to, to really settle into it and great.
- 3:33It shows just, it's just so much fun and it's doing all of the
- 3:36things that I like about Doctor Who, you know, the filming and
- 3:38the tents and the having to, you know, sort of all the behind the
- 3:41scenes stuff is fun. It's interesting because it's a
- 3:44story and it's Doctor Who going against the odds again and
- 3:49managing to find a way around these insurmountable, seemingly
- 3:55problems that it has and still pulling off one of the best
- 3:58things that they've done in years.
- 3:59It's so imaginative, like I'm not saying there's no
- 4:02imagination in the 80s, but there is, there is a a degree of
- 4:07creativity in that story I don't think we've seen for a while.
- 4:11It does feel like we're sort of heading for a renaissance just
- 4:15as the the axe comes down. Yeah, no, exactly.
- 4:18And I mean, what's his name? Ian Redington?
- 4:21Is it? The clown is the fucking
- 4:23creepiest. Like never Mind It or Ronald
- 4:28McDonald, the Ian Redington is fucking terrifying.
- 4:32It's the bit where the robots surround Bellboy and he just
- 4:35sort of smiles and does his hand thing, doesn't he?
- 4:38Of like, yes, that's him dealt with.
- 4:40Yeah, yeah, exactly. It's just, it's just so eerie
- 4:44and I think the way that they would like the sound with the
- 4:46where they've taken the sound off the car moving past and
- 4:48stuff is just, it's just great. It's just.
- 4:54It's just. Score as well.
- 4:56Mark Hayes score is creepy as hell.
- 4:58It is, it's just, it's just one of the most, like you said more
- 5:02it's one of the most interesting and inventive versions of who
- 5:05that we've had for ages. And it's the sort of sci-fi that
- 5:07only Doctor Who can do. And I think a lot of the 80s
- 5:10stuff is feels like the sort of sci-fi that anyone could do.
- 5:17I think. I don't know if that's fair, but
- 5:19I think that's right, that there's a type of Doctor Who,
- 5:22there's a type of story that only Doctor Who can tell.
- 5:24And I think that towards the end of certainly towards, I think in
- 5:31the maybe, yeah, basically towards the end of Tom Baker's
- 5:36run it, it starts to do Doctor Who starts.
- 5:41I'm aware season 18 is absolutely mental.
- 5:43So it's not it's just really nice to have that stuff, that
- 5:47stuff back. It's the sort of stuff where I,
- 5:49I can see why kids would be interested in watching it.
- 5:54But I was thinking about this earlier that there's a, well,
- 5:57maybe we'll come back to this when we touch on the, the bad
- 5:59stuff, but there's a sort of look to the 80s stuff as well
- 6:03that feels more like the sort of kids telly that was on when I
- 6:05was a kid. So it's harder for me to take it
- 6:07seriously. Artificiality to it, isn't it?
- 6:10I find, yeah, that's sort of garishness, like tea bag, you
- 6:15know, the great mystery and stuff like that.
- 6:17It does look like a lot of the times, like it has been shot in
- 6:21BBC studios in a way that I think some 60s stuff doesn't.
- 6:24No, I think that. I think the early 60s stuff,
- 6:28well all the 60s stuff really is lent.
- 6:30I think the black and white kind of lends it that that air.
- 6:32So it is trickier once you get into colour.
- 6:34But then they managed it through the 70s.
- 6:37I can imagine, I can imagine the greatest show in the Galaxy
- 6:40turning up on a few people's lists, but I can imagine Mccoy's
- 6:44stories turning up on everybody's list.
- 6:47And it'll be really interesting to see because there's a lot of
- 6:49different tones in that era, what people choose.
- 6:53It isn't the first, it isn't the only time he's going to turn off
- 6:57this evening, but it might be the only time he turns off in
- 7:00this list. Oh great, yes, best classic 9.
- 7:09I feel like this is one that's going to turn up a lot.
- 7:11So I'm going to put it here because it it deserves, it
- 7:13deserves to be higher, but I don't, I don't.
- 7:16It doesn't need to be. It doesn't need my praise.
- 7:19I'm going to say the demons is my #9.
- 7:22The fights are there for all to see.
- 7:24Yes, I think it's fantastic, it's brilliant and there's
- 7:27nothing bad about it at all. It could easily be lots of
- 7:31people's number ones, which is precisely why I've tried.
- 7:33I think it might be the most trad.
- 7:35Atmospheric though, isn't it? It's so good and I just it it's
- 7:40like the Victorian period. It's just Doctor Who in
- 7:43villages. Is it?
- 7:45It's at its best, especially this period of the show.
- 7:48You know, Pertwee and Joe make sense in in a village.
- 7:53What you you know, it's just count.
- 7:55The things off on your hand. Chat with the Wings, Mike Yates
- 8:01and Benton in Civvies. Miss Hawthorne, BBC 30.
- 8:05Just wonderful. Yeah, there's just, there's just
- 8:07not a bad word anyone can say about it really.
- 8:08And I know that it may be, I don't know that it needs the
- 8:10five episodes, but I have never thought there's no, there's no
- 8:14bit. I would think to myself, I don't
- 8:16need this bit. Why do I need to spend less time
- 8:18in this village? You know?
- 8:19I just want to spend more time there.
- 8:21Could they squeeze on episode 6 out somehow?
- 8:24Yeah, like, I don't know that. I mean, my favorite bits are
- 8:27nothing to do with the plot at all, really.
- 8:30My favorite bits are the bit where the Master gets chased
- 8:33around by the by Bessie because it looks like an episode of Brum
- 8:37and I just love that. Oh, Lord Perk, we've been such a
- 8:40cunt when the man goes from, you know, are you one of those TV
- 8:44fellows or the wig Wig. It's that crazy.
- 8:50Master master as a vicar is perfect, especially Delgado's
- 8:54master as a vicar. I don't think I'd have trusted
- 8:55Amy's master as a vicar. I think that's.
- 8:57A suspensionless rationalist priest indeed.
- 9:01Yeah, he's, he's Delgado at his best.
- 9:05There's there's a reason he was around for so many stories at
- 9:09that that that period of time. You require no more explanation.
- 9:14The demons is a sound choice, and I think you're right.
- 9:17I think that will turn up quite a bit.
- 9:22Best Classic 8. I've got I've got a list of 10
- 9:26and I know where my top threes are, but these are all
- 9:28interchangeable I think at any given.
- 9:29Given you've prepared lists of faulty stories, the fact that
- 9:33you've not put them in any order, I mean, I feel like
- 9:36you're sabotaging yourself here. Probably.
- 9:38Well, I'll tell you what I started doing originally, if
- 9:40you, you know, was I wrote all of the stories or the entire
- 9:45classic series and the entire entire new series out on my
- 9:47notes app on my phone. And I started just going like,
- 9:50right, well, do I like the on earthly child more than the
- 9:52Daleks and on earthly. Child, no, you didn't do.
- 9:55That I started just doing the whole thing and I think I got
- 9:57maybe through to the middle of the perjury year before I just
- 10:01went this is fucking intolerable.
- 10:03Why are you lying to me on this call?
- 10:04Pretending to me? You've got a life, Jesus Christ.
- 10:08Like I say, I did eventually get bored of that so.
- 10:12That would have taken you a lifetime to do that.
- 10:16I couldn't, yeah, I couldn't be asked.
- 10:17It was it was too much. It's it's hard.
- 10:21It's hard though, because like I say, there's nothing I don't
- 10:23read like you know, all of it. I would rather watch than most
- 10:26other shows so. That's why I'm not doing it.
- 10:29I don't want to do the hard work, I just want to listen to
- 10:31the lists. Fair enough.
- 10:34Let's. Give me a top classic.
- 10:38Yeah, I will. Sorry, where?
- 10:40What about Evil of the Daleks? Then let's go for.
- 10:45Evil. Oh yes.
- 10:47I think this is one of those ones where the thing that really
- 10:52sticks in my head, they're always just stupid little bits.
- 10:55They're never like the story or the direction or anything.
- 11:00That's obviously the direction we can't really see, but it's
- 11:04the there's the the dialects being turned nice is just at
- 11:10this point in the show is so much fun.
- 11:13The dizzy, dizzy dialects and all that shit.
- 11:14I love it. Alpha.
- 11:16Beta. Omega.
- 11:18Yeah and the the ones getting bollocks who shouted you will
- 11:21obey and they look back and going I will not obey.
- 11:25It's just so much fun. Why?
- 11:27Yeah, that's it's just so much fun.
- 11:29Like my have I've been doing that with my kids.
- 11:34Like my little girl has to watch Evil, Evil and the Daleks.
- 11:36It's like she she likes that one.
- 11:38She's only three and we'd listen to the soundtrack to that in the
- 11:41car and the amount of times that I have had to go.
- 11:43You will obey and she'll go. I will not obey.
- 11:47You'd have to get it in there. So it's it's just great.
- 11:51But plus, you know, all of the the idea that I would kill to
- 11:55see the footage. I'm assuming I don't.
- 11:57Is it? Is it actually in the thing that
- 11:59drought was riding around on a Dalek?
- 12:01Yes, right. Yeah, at the end of the episode.
- 12:03Yeah, we're playing trains. I would kill to see that.
- 12:06I think that would be there's not much in terms of missing
- 12:11episodes stuff that I would want to see obviously all of it.
- 12:14But like if there was anything that if I could just find like
- 12:17just 10 second clip of that, I would be happy.
- 12:22And I think and I think the story holds together pretty well
- 12:25to be fair as well. It's not like I don't think it
- 12:27drags for. A Whoa.
- 12:29It's past, present, future. It's got monsters, it's got
- 12:33villains, it's got history. There's so much happening in
- 12:36there. Yeah, no, it's just it's great
- 12:38fun. Like a great big cake of Doctor
- 12:40Who, isn't it? Of everything it can do.
- 12:42Yeah, yeah, it's just really showing off.
- 12:44And obviously what's, you know, it's the end of Trout's first
- 12:46season. So like the sort of a bit of a
- 12:48victory lap really isn't it? Because it's just they've
- 12:51they've achieved something that would probably have seemed
- 12:54mental to even be trying at the time and.
- 12:59But I feel like they they pulled it off, they gave it some money,
- 13:02they gave it a good director. Dudley Citizen fucking aced the
- 13:06score, like the production assistant said in the Doctor
- 13:10Who. Make us think we knew.
- 13:11We knew we were making something special with this, but you know,
- 13:14like we were seeing the stuff coming in and we knew we'd sort
- 13:17of struck gold. Yeah, 1 episode man, I thought
- 13:20we've got oh tragic best classic 7.
- 13:29Kinder. Oh, you can't mend people.
- 13:33No, I think honestly, I was uncertain about between it and
- 13:38Snake Dance because I've tried to represent everybody you know
- 13:42in my list as well. I've tried to make sure that
- 13:43it's not just one big loving for a particular era.
- 13:47But Simon Rouse is probably the crowning jewel in this story, if
- 13:53not this season. For me.
- 13:54I just, he's fantastic. He's one of the few actors I can
- 13:58tell you the name of because I made a point of learning it
- 14:01because I just thought it's such a spectacular turn, like the
- 14:04like the Cardboard city and the just, it's one of the best
- 14:10portrayals of someone going, but it's like a Shakespearean.
- 14:12I know that Shakespearean gets bandied around a lot, but it is
- 14:15like a Shakespearean madness. He's fearless, isn't he?
- 14:19He's like, he's, he, he, He's not willing to hold back at any
- 14:22point. No.
- 14:23And I think that's one of the things that you can see
- 14:26sometimes when actors feel a little bit embarrassed, Peter
- 14:28Davison, about what they're having to do.
- 14:31And Simon Rouse is the opposite of that.
- 14:33Simon Rouse could not give a shit what you think of him.
- 14:37Driven a bit where he tears up the lab when the doctor and Todd
- 14:40go out and he's just furiously tearing plants out and I'm like,
- 14:45fucking hell, that guy could do anything.
- 14:47Yeah, no, he's he's just, he's just fully mad.
- 14:51I don't even mind the big snake I.
- 14:54Don't mind a big snake. No, I've heard that.
- 14:58I don't disappoint. I don't mind.
- 15:02I don't mind the biggest snake being looked at by itself in
- 15:05mirrors. I think that's fine.
- 15:08I. See.
- 15:08All sort of fairy tale ending, isn't it?
- 15:10Of evil, Yeah. Having its evil reflected back
- 15:13at itself, yeah. Again, it doesn't really make
- 15:16any sense, but like I say, I can do logic.
- 15:18I can do leaps of logic when it's on another planet.
- 15:23I, I, I think as well because the bloke from what's that bloke
- 15:27from Red Dwarf that's in it as well, the paranoia bloke.
- 15:29Oh, Lee Cornez. Yes, that's him.
- 15:32I love him as well. I think it's just, it's just
- 15:35such a great, I mean, he hasn't got even any lines, but he's
- 15:38just, he's just great. He sort of nods along with his
- 15:42little dull, don't he? Yeah, it's just such a great
- 15:44cast of great cast of characters.
- 15:46Great. I was getting great sets, great
- 15:50sets apart from the floor. If you don't look down
- 15:53everything, it's it's all beautiful.
- 15:55I think sometimes it takes people a long time me to fall in
- 15:59love with kinda, but I think the more you watch it, the more you
- 16:02get out of it, and that isn't the case with all of Doctor Who.
- 16:05No, that's true. Yeah.
- 16:07It's just one of them stories and I think I like Adric and his
- 16:14little, what do you call it, machine, But they're.
- 16:16TSS machine. Yeah, that's the one I knew
- 16:19you'd know. Kinda what a great choice.
- 16:22Yeah, it's a yeah, tricky to tricky to quantify how much I
- 16:25like it really. And I'm.
- 16:26Seeing see, I'm seeing a sort of pattern greatest show, quirky,
- 16:30kinder, a bit different. You know, you you sort of like
- 16:33the ones that are a bit non traditional.
- 16:36Yeah, I think as well because Kinder is one of those ones
- 16:39where I have seen it more than once and partly because it's
- 16:42when I was, I was able to convince because my lad's
- 16:44obsessed with snakes. So it was an easy one.
- 16:47It was an easy win for me and I would I would probably not the
- 16:51easiest one to hold the kids attention, but when there's a
- 16:53snake involved, he's he's he's all eyes.
- 16:56Did you watch the new CGI snake though rather?
- 16:58Than I have watched it, I don't care for it, it looks great but
- 17:02like it's not it's not why I'm there.
- 17:05I mean, that's rather wonderful, but that big pink snake grief.
- 17:10Yeah, I want, I want it looking like it's made of paper mache,
- 17:13because how do I know that snakes aren't made of paper
- 17:15mache? Well.
- 17:16I'm sure when they come from the dark places of the inside, how
- 17:18do you know? Well, exactly.
- 17:21Yeah. I don't want, I don't want paper
- 17:23mache in my dark places of my insides.
- 17:28Best Classic 6. Well, I did say there'd be 1
- 17:31Revelation. Revelation of the Daleks is
- 17:34going in here. But great Ela, how's ordered you
- 17:38dead? I yeah, I love Relation of the
- 17:43Daleks. It's just, I watched it twice
- 17:47one day at work, just, I watched it once just through and then
- 17:52once with the commentary on just it's one of the few ones that I
- 17:56really just keep going back to and I don't even really know
- 17:58why. I think I'm not a huge Terry
- 18:03Malloy Davros fan in the air. Like I don't particularly like
- 18:06him in the Davison one, which I can't remember the name of.
- 18:09I always. Resurrection of that.
- 18:11Thank you. I always get confused about
- 18:13because there's too many Rs. It's, it's upsetting and
- 18:15confusing. But I think he's really good in
- 18:18this. And I really like, I really want
- 18:19to see a cut out of the, the bit where he sat and his head
- 18:24spinning round because I know it was just under an office chair
- 18:27just twatting his knees on things.
- 18:29And I really want to see that. I really want to see studio
- 18:31footage of that, but I think I start to really enjoy tearing
- 18:37Malloy's Dan Ross in this. And I think aside from calling
- 18:42each other fat all the time, Perry and the Doctor are as
- 18:46lovely in this as they've ever been.
- 18:51That statue is not convincing anyone, is it?
- 18:54No, no, no. But it's a shame we couldn't
- 18:56have the blood coming out of it like they wanted.
- 18:58But, you know, yeah. Looking like a sort of a.
- 19:01It is stylish as hell though isn't.
- 19:03It it looks gorgeous with the snow and your man is it Clive
- 19:08Swift? So.
- 19:10Horrible. Those rose red Ruby lips were
- 19:12made for kissing, he says to Perry.
- 19:15Yeah, what a creep. No, there's too much of that.
- 19:18She's she's, she's the. But in that one, he's
- 19:22deliberately grotesque, right? And it's, it's, it's paralleling
- 19:25that against Tasenbeaker, who absolutely adores him.
- 19:30Yeah, so it's a very strangelove Tiger.
- 19:32I think she's great as well, actually.
- 19:33I know that that's a bit of a she's an odd bit of casting.
- 19:36She's glorious. Best Classic 5.
- 19:43The Aztecs. I like the Aztecs.
- 19:46Oh my God, how shall a man know? Oh, it's just, it's poetic,
- 19:51isn't it? It is.
- 19:52I think this might be the first time when I started watching the
- 19:55show from the beginning that the outside of the regulars, John
- 19:59Ringham really left an impression and he might be the
- 20:02first actor whose name I was like, I need to remember this
- 20:05guy's name because Plutoxel is such a fucking brilliant
- 20:10villain. Like the the classic
- 20:14historicals. I know why they sort of phased
- 20:16out eventually, and it makes me sad that they did because I I'm
- 20:19a fan of those, but I kind of get it.
- 20:22But if all the villains had been so, so pantomimic as Plutoxel.
- 20:28They'd have. I think they'd have lasted
- 20:30longer. That's why I like him so much at
- 20:32the end of episode 1 where he's staring straight out the screen.
- 20:35I will destroy her. He's great.
- 20:39He's brilliant. And obviously it's, it's, it's a
- 20:41precursor to all the stuff that it, I feel like it sets out a
- 20:44lot of the, the Doctor Who stole that we eventually get to stuff
- 20:50that becomes staples, like they're not changing history.
- 20:53And it doesn't, it's not fixed events, but it's, you know,
- 20:55that, that kind of vibe that it's the first time we've had to
- 20:59learn that lesson from Barbara, who's a woman we respect.
- 21:04And we, you know, we think she's largely good hearted and you can
- 21:07see why she's doing it. It makes dramatic sense that
- 21:09that's what she wants to do. And the Doctor's very kind about
- 21:15it. Eventually you're just like,
- 21:17look, I get what you were doing. But, and also crucially, Susan's
- 21:21barely in this one. Crucially, yes.
- 21:25She's on holiday for two episodes, isn't she?
- 21:28Oh, wonderful. Which I've only just really put
- 21:30together now that that might be one of the reasons I love it so
- 21:32much. Also as well, given it's done in
- 21:36the corner of Lime Grove, it's stunningly well well designed.
- 21:40I just think it looks gorgeous, that story.
- 21:43It does it's, it looks fantastic.
- 21:47And again, I think it's one of those ones where probably if
- 21:49they'd done it in colour it wouldn't have looked quite as as
- 21:51good. The black and white lens, you
- 21:53know, hides a few a few details maybe.
- 21:58Why they? Why they?
- 21:59Got so boring with their historical locations as the show
- 22:04went on because in the first year we're in Mexico, we're in
- 22:07China you know we're in all these exciting places and then
- 22:10come to the 70s we're only in England that's.
- 22:12Probably because they were all painted fucking blue for it to
- 22:14look right on the cameras. It's probably much harder to
- 22:17pull off a realistic looking thing if you've got to use that
- 22:19colour. Also is this the first time Ian
- 22:22kills someone when he chucks that bloke off his side?
- 22:25Because he definitely, by the end of series one, he's
- 22:27definitely got a kill count of. More than.
- 22:30More than one or two. Yeah, wipe out quite a few
- 22:33people. Yeah, he.
- 22:34Definitely kills someone. He kills someone in this.
- 22:36He kills someone in Keys of Marinus, doesn't he?
- 22:38I think at least one person. He kicks that man right off the
- 22:41top of the the hicarat, doesn't he?
- 22:43It's wonderful. Yeah, that's would it.
- 22:47I feel like he's a bit too ready to do that for a for a science
- 22:52teacher. He's had enough at that point,
- 22:53isn't that? I didn't want to have a couple
- 22:55of these adventures, all right? I've had enough for everyone
- 22:56trying to stick swords in me. That's true, although I suppose
- 22:59he was probably was he. Would he have been a war
- 23:01veteran? Would he have been a World War 2
- 23:02veteran at this .0? Very possibly, yeah.
- 23:05So. Maybe so he's just like, yeah,
- 23:06no, like I've I've thought Nazis, mate.
- 23:08I'm going to chalk you off this building.
- 23:09I don't actually care. Best Classic 4?
- 23:17Well, how do you fancy sort of stroking off another classic
- 23:20series? Yeah, I'd love to.
- 23:22I'd love to do. Yeah, actually, that'd be really
- 23:23nice. Then let's stroke off carnival
- 23:27monsters then. Oh my God, we are entertainers.
- 23:31We put on a show. We could, we could even stroke
- 23:33it off with one of the little Drashi camp puppets that they
- 23:35did. Yeah, I've got one of those
- 23:37actually. Do you know?
- 23:37Do you know what there are? There are so few figures that
- 23:40I'm like, I really want one of those like, but that's that's
- 23:42the one. I think that's the one got.
- 23:44Your hand inside that thrashings.
- 23:46Yeah. Oh boy.
- 23:48You can have you could have a very spectacular wank that would
- 23:50be very difficult to explain. What makes you think I haven't?
- 23:53You know those I'm. Assuming there's a reason it's
- 23:56hard, Yeah, absolutely. Just looks like a fucking
- 24:00cinnamon roll. And it's very messy, the poor
- 24:04thrashing. Yes, like it caused an explosion
- 24:08with the Sonic screwdriver. But yeah, I I think it's one of
- 24:12those ones where it's just, it's not doing anything particularly
- 24:16spectacular, but it's loads and loads of fun.
- 24:19It it's there's all the stuff inside the the mini scope where
- 24:25the hand comes in and gets the TARDIS.
- 24:27It's just, it's just really daft.
- 24:29It's another one those lovely ones where we all know what's
- 24:31happening. So like the watching the doctor
- 24:35and Joe figure it out, it it doesn't feel painful at all.
- 24:37It's it's just really fun to have them hanging around.
- 24:40The stuff on the ship is great that that puppet dinosaurs a bit
- 24:43weird but apart from that the. Characters are really fun as
- 24:48well, aren't they? You know, Vorg and Carlick and
- 24:52all of that. Yeah, I really love all of.
- 24:53Them Daily and Claire. Yeah, I really love all all the
- 24:57all the grey dudes just being grey all over the place.
- 25:00It's just great fun. I could not quite get my head
- 25:04around it. When I realised that one of them
- 25:05was Dave Ross, that blew my mind.
- 25:08But that's acting for you, isn't?
- 25:10It it's just as good in this though when they try and destroy
- 25:14the scope and it just goes bravo because they fail.
- 25:18Yeah, it's it's one of those stories where it really, it
- 25:24feels like it really fulfills the remit of what Doctor Who
- 25:28should be. Because obviously we've, I feel
- 25:29like we've moved on at this point from the educating and
- 25:33still like obviously there's still bits of that.
- 25:35But really it's this is another one of those two sci-fi stories
- 25:39that only Doctor Who can do. It would not work in any other
- 25:43show or franchise or whatever you want to call it it.
- 25:47It's perfect Doctor Who. So.
- 25:50So good they did it twice with Nightmare of Eden.
- 25:53Yeah, exactly. Which which I like less, but I
- 25:56feel like that's what I could go back to.
- 26:00Best Classic 3. I'm saying the Magra Terra.
- 26:06Well, this is gay. Yeah, it's just, it's one of
- 26:12those ones where I think the obviously I've seen the
- 26:17animation more than I've seen any of the other.
- 26:19I think this might be might be the animation I've seen the most
- 26:24of and it's just really fun. Like it feels like one that I
- 26:30would love to see this properly, but it feels like 1 where
- 26:33they've really put the effort into the the animation to make
- 26:36it feel like a story that's worth watching.
- 26:38And that's probably partly due to the fact that the source
- 26:40material is actually brilliant in the 1st place.
- 26:43But it's a really strong team. I love the little bit of music
- 26:52that's one of my favorite bits of all the music in Doctor Who
- 26:56the little that's the and if you want to hear me whistling that,
- 27:07you can tune into my own podcast because I got because it got
- 27:10taken down off bloody Spotify for using the music.
- 27:13But there we are. That's that is how that works.
- 27:16And I just think it's I'm running out of words to this.
- 27:22I'm I'm running out of adjectives for brilliant.
- 27:24You're superlatives, yeah. Yeah, it's it's.
- 27:27So I pull up a thesaurus and see if I can find some new ones to
- 27:30call it what? Do you know, like it's, it's
- 27:33like the sinister place with the sort of glossy, stylish
- 27:40exterior. It's sort of like what I imagine
- 27:44most American households are like, You know, they look
- 27:47beautiful and lovely from the outside, but there's creepy
- 27:50stuff happening inside. That's the Macrotera, right?
- 27:53Yeah. Punching the the artificial
- 27:56surface and showing you what's crawling inside.
- 27:59Like the Stepford Wives. If the Stepford Wives were
- 28:03instead of robots, they were giant crabs.
- 28:05Giant gas eating crabs. That's the Doctor Who version,
- 28:07right? Yeah.
- 28:09Well, that's, yeah, that's probably a better way to.
- 28:11That's a very nice way to describe it, but it is probably
- 28:14one of the better examples of that.
- 28:16You know, you turn up in a place, something feels a bit
- 28:18weird. Everyone seems too happy.
- 28:19Of course there's gas crabs and I love all the stuff with the
- 28:26the voice coming over and I love the the bit where that guy's on
- 28:30the screen and they're all just and he's getting like rounded on
- 28:32by the crabs. Macra, they're in control.
- 28:37There is no such thing as MACRA, unfortunately.
- 28:39You've got something in your top ten and your bottom 10 set in a
- 28:42holiday camp, you know. Well, there we go then.
- 28:46That's so clearly. Diverse tastes.
- 28:48So clearly the holiday camp was not the problem.
- 28:50I love a holiday camp. No, that's right.
- 28:52Although they it looks like a prism cell.
- 28:54Or doesn't it in Delton Abandonment.
- 28:56Yeah. Best Classic 2.
- 29:02I'll say something nice about the myth makers.
- 29:05Oh, please say something nice about the myth makers.
- 29:08I adore the myth makers and it's I don't think, I think it was
- 29:14the first one of the reconstructions that I'd watched
- 29:17when I was doing my run through where I felt fully engaged with
- 29:21it. And I think that's partially to
- 29:23do with the quality of the Recon I was watching, but also just
- 29:27the story is just lovely. It's so much fun and Hartnell's
- 29:31having the best time. And I love Vicky and I'm I'm not
- 29:36so sure about Stephen. I still am not certain about
- 29:39him, though he I'm warming to him, but Vicky is easily my
- 29:44favorite First Doctor companion by a country mile.
- 29:48Chemistry. Isn't it harder and O'Brien?
- 29:51Yeah, it's just, it's mad how quickly I just didn't give a
- 29:55shit that Susan was gone when they brought Vicky on board,
- 29:58because they were again, the rescue was quite high up.
- 30:00Vicky All right. No.
- 30:02Well, no, that's true. But she's just.
- 30:06So the myth makers, well, I mean a story that nobody can actually
- 30:11watch and we can only listen to with that popping terrible
- 30:14soundtrack, but it's riches shine through anyway.
- 30:20The idea, I think it's one of those because the, the, it's one
- 30:23of those bits of history where they can muck around with it
- 30:25anyway, because the, the, the horse is probably not real, but
- 30:28it's such a ridiculous, lovely bit of mythology.
- 30:31It's a rare thing to go into that sort of mythological world.
- 30:35And it's really nice to to say, yeah, the horse was real and
- 30:41also it was the doctor's fault. And that lovely bit where he's
- 30:43talking about, you know, like, oh, well, we'll try the we'll
- 30:47try catapult and you over the wall first.
- 30:50Oh, that's just wonderful. Oh God, no.
- 30:54I think of something else then, shall I?
- 30:57Yeah, I think that's it's one of those ones where the.
- 30:59Yeah, the idea he's just trying to work around not saying the
- 31:02horse. And I mean, the book's amazing
- 31:04as well. It's just one of those stories
- 31:06that I just I love in investing in, in all of its forms.
- 31:12I cannot disagree with a word that you just said there.
- 31:15Do you know I, I adored the, it was David Gillespie Pratt,
- 31:18wasn't it? That you spoke about it?
- 31:20And I adored that commentary. I think it.
- 31:23Was just, it was one of my favourites of that.
- 31:25Yeah. I, I because I, I was basically
- 31:28discovering that for the first time.
- 31:31All of its themes, all of its gags, there's crazy sitcom
- 31:36relationships. Oh, just gorgeous.
- 31:39Yeah, there's nothing There's. That's the one where I think I
- 31:41would give five years from the end of my life to have that
- 31:44back. Yeah, I.
- 31:45Just want one, just one episode please.
- 31:47Yeah, just anything, any, any footage, anything because I
- 31:50just, I just want to see what it was like.
- 31:52I've got a feeling it looks pretty good as well, because
- 31:55David literally examined that camera script and could tell me
- 31:58how it was sort of caught and shot and it oh God, yes, please,
- 32:05please search your basements. Everybody search your attics.
- 32:09Yeah, come on, film is fabulous. Keep looking at every boot fair.
- 32:13Yeah, we'll, we'll be outside the University of Leicester
- 32:16throwing stones until you bring it out.
- 32:23Best Classic 1. My best ever classic story is
- 32:29The Power of Crawl. What your favorite of all time?
- 32:35Yeah. No further, no further
- 32:39questions. You're on it.
- 32:41No. I have questions.
- 32:43I have questions. We've we've been on this call,
- 32:48we've been on this call for nearly three hours and that's
- 32:50what we've got as far as the power of crawl.
- 32:52No, we've been on this call for nearly 3 1/2 hours and with the
- 32:55conclusion we're reaching is the power of Crawl is the the best
- 32:59Doctor Who story of all time. Go on.
- 33:04Well, I mean, I'm speaking to the man who runs Strictly Come
- 33:07Hamster, so I feel like it's weird that, you know, I will not
- 33:10take this judgement. Those aren't my actual opinions,
- 33:12that's just entertainment. Yeah.
- 33:14Well, I think it's just one of those where I think if I, if I
- 33:18have to choose a story to put on the power of crawl is probably
- 33:20the one that I like that I've seen the most times.
- 33:23It's just I love the location work.
- 33:25I love the model work. I love the tentacles.
- 33:27I love Tom, I love Mary Tam. He's the most beautiful lady in
- 33:30the world aside from my wife. If she can hear me and even if
- 33:34she can't hear me, actually, I'll stick with that.
- 33:36That's true. Also, she won't listen to this.
- 33:40It's hours and hours of. She would have chipped out.
- 33:44There's not a chance. There's not a chance even.
- 33:46I'm not really listening. She Yeah, no, I just, I think I
- 33:54love the idea that the the key to the key to time is probably
- 33:57my favorite season anyway. I think it was the first full
- 34:02season of Doctor Who that I'd seen and I've got real vivid
- 34:06memories of sitting and watching the whole thing.
- 34:08I just love it. I love the bloke with the big
- 34:10chin who's in charge of the I can't remember his name these.
- 34:13Neil McCarthy, yeah. That's the one that was also in
- 34:16mind of evil. He's another one of those
- 34:18people. Every time I see him, I'm just
- 34:19like, oh, it's that guy. Cano and John Leeson there.
- 34:23Yeah, yeah, who's, you know, left him in the TARDIS and son
- 34:26how he materialised in the in the oil rig.
- 34:29The Friends of Earth are not cranks.
- 34:33I yeah, I like the, I like the silly thing where Tom raises his
- 34:36voice and shouts them out of the the capture.
- 34:41I like the bloke in the rubber suit and that did look better
- 34:44from the front. I just like all of it.
- 34:47I just think it's one of those and also, again, I know this
- 34:51isn't a valid reason, but it is also the, I think the first
- 34:54classic who I managed to sit down and convince my lads to
- 34:57watch with me, which, you know, I'm trying to think of stuff
- 35:02that has stuff with tentacles monsters and it's the biggest
- 35:05rubber monster you're going to get.
- 35:09And although that CSO thing where like that cut across the
- 35:14that is too sheer. I know, but well.
- 35:18I don't care. I'm not, you know, the the.
- 35:20The model is great, though shot on film.
- 35:22It's fucking incredible. I think it looks amazing and.
- 35:25They'll do that for the Blu-ray. They will smooth that out.
- 35:28Of course they will it. It looks spectacular.
- 35:31My favorite thing about the power of crawl and this is not
- 35:34really a thing about the power of crawl, but my favorite thing
- 35:36that happened, We were watching it and he was getting really
- 35:40into it. The bit where the the technical
- 35:43comes out of the pipe and he gets the.
- 35:44Guy, right? And he gets sucked back into it.
- 35:46He's fucking brilliant. And then the bit where Tom is
- 35:49fighting the this technical, this tentacle slaps him across
- 35:53the face. And my son was so excited that
- 35:56this had happened, he stood up and slapped me full force across
- 36:00the face. And I couldn't even be mad
- 36:04because I was just. You get it for exposing your son
- 36:07to the power of crow. But he was just so excited by
- 36:09it, and I think that's a really lovely moment.
- 36:11So I was just like, I'm excited, please don't do it again.
- 36:13But I'm really excited that we get to share this.
- 36:15He was so excited he had to lash out.
- 36:18Exactly like just the the the power of Kroll came through his
- 36:21hand and slapped me around the. Shoulders wonder if Doctor Who
- 36:24could make children sort of violent and angry, you know, And
- 36:28now we've got proof. Conclusive, do you think?
- 36:30I mean, it's not an obvious choice, Joe.
- 36:32No, I did say there'd be a couple of surprises you.
- 36:35Saved the best till last there. I tried, I did try.
- 36:42And we'll be back next time with Joe's bottom 10 new series
- 36:47episodes. If you're a fan of the new
- 36:50series episodes, well, he's got some surprises on that list for
- 36:54you.
