Latest / Mount Eaton Church / Christ the True and Better - Hebrews 2:1-4 - The Better Message
Transcript
- 0:00It's quite a bit to learn through these four verses.
- 0:15You wouldn't think so.
- 0:16Of course, we always dig and find something, don't we?
- 0:21So I guess I so love, I love that we fact.
- 0:28There's a lot that I'm joyful about.
- 0:31I'll say that.
- 0:32Anyway, Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 0:35Thank you, Lord, for your word.
- 0:37Thank you for this amazing letter to the Hebrews.
- 0:41Thank you that you are the better messenger and that you are the better message and there
- 0:47is no message greater.
- 0:49Lord, I pray that as we start off in chapter two that we really understand the importance
- 0:55of the message of the gospel and the testimony and the witness by which you have provided
- 1:02to show and to declare the proof that the message is true.
- 1:05So Lord, we praise you and we thank you.
- 1:07To you be honor and glory forever in Jesus' name.
- 1:11Amen.
- 1:13So I'm going to start off with Hebrews one through four.
- 1:17Hebrews one is just a clear declaration about who the better messenger is.
- 1:24There's no need for me to really go through verse five through the end of the chapter
- 1:28because it's really just showing the difference, the comparison of Christ and the angels or
- 1:36the messengers and the clarification of that.
- 1:40What we really need to see is chapter one, one through four, and this is the reason why
- 1:48he starts off in chapter two, verse one through four with this statement.
- 1:52So chapters one, one through four is the reason for chapter two, one through four.
- 1:58That's where we're going to start.
- 1:59Long ago, at many times in many ways, God spoke, Laleo, to our fathers by the prophets.
- 2:10But in these last days, he has spoken to us by his son, whom he appointed the heir of
- 2:16all things, through whom also he created the world.
- 2:21He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.
- 2:26And he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
- 2:29After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high,
- 2:35having become as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent
- 2:41than theirs.
- 2:42So therefore, chapter two, therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have
- 2:54heard lest we drift away from it.
- 2:58Verse one.
- 2:59So in other words, because of this, chapter one, therefore knowing that Christ is the
- 3:06better messenger, Christ is the better prophet, the better messenger, we should pay much closer
- 3:17attention to what you have heard.
- 3:19Now, this word, therefore, is diahutos.
- 3:26This word, diahutos, means by means of or because of this reason.
- 3:32It's a very clear reason why you should pay much closer attention to this message.
- 3:43That the messenger is the reason why you should listen to the message.
- 3:49The message is highly important.
- 3:51It's the most important, as it says in 1 Corinthians 15.
- 3:56Now, the word here, we must pay much closer attention.
- 4:01Not going to give you the Greek for this one, but I'm going to give you the definition.
- 4:04It means it's necessary to be more earnest or more exceedingly.
- 4:14It's necessary to be more earnestly or more exceedingly.
- 4:17In other words, the reason why you should be paying attention is because it's necessary
- 4:24for you to be earnest and exceedingly earnest.
- 4:30That's what he means.
- 4:32Must pay much closer.
- 4:35How important is it to you?
- 4:37How exceedingly great is this message?
- 4:41How earnest is this message for you?
- 4:43Now, this word, attention, interesting word, to pay attention means to turn the mind to,
- 4:52to give heed to, or to devote thought and effort.
- 4:57That's the one thing I think we really have a hard time with.
- 5:01Do we really give our thought and effort to the gospel?
- 5:07Or is Jesus some fast food spiritual provider for you?
- 5:15Do you go to him and ask him whatever you want, then when you're done, you just sit
- 5:18him on his shelf.
- 5:20Do we really give our thought and effort?
- 5:23Do we spend our time?
- 5:25Do we give our full attention?
- 5:29It's important because we have to give our full attention to him and to his gospel.
- 5:34Everything in your life is revolving around him.
- 5:38You want a happy marriage, husbands?
- 5:40Love your wives.
- 5:41Let Christ reign.
- 5:43Wives, you want a happy marriage?
- 5:45Love your husbands and honor them.
- 5:48Let Christ reign.
- 5:50You want to be a good employee?
- 5:52Let Christ reign.
- 5:53Christ is the preeminent in every aspect of your life.
- 5:56There's not a place in your life that Christ should not reign.
- 6:02You should be paying attention to his message and especially to him.
- 6:07If you're not paying attention to him, then he's just a means to an end for you.
- 6:11And what the writer here is saying is that no, you should be paying much closer attention.
- 6:17You should absolutely devote every thought and every effort of your life to him.
- 6:24Not only thinking, but doing.
- 6:26Now, why?
- 6:29Because if you don't pay every attention, give every attention to what you have heard,
- 6:37what did you hear?
- 6:38The gospel.
- 6:41You will drift from it.
- 6:43And we see this all day long.
- 6:46Most churches, and I say most churches, a lot of people, let me say that, a lot of people
- 6:52actually just give no heed to Jesus at all.
- 6:57He's a means to an end.
- 6:59And after a while when struggle happens and life happens and all the difficulties in life
- 7:04come into your life, they drift away.
- 7:08They give up.
- 7:09Why?
- 7:10Because Jesus didn't give them what they demanded.
- 7:15So how important is this amazing story about Christ?
- 7:20The gospel is the thing you fall in love with.
- 7:25You fall in love with the gospel so that you will fall in love with the person of the gospel
- 7:28so that you will tell others about the gospel.
- 7:33So we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest me pote is this word.
- 7:44This word lest me pote means in no way.
- 7:49So he's saying if you pay attention to what you have heard, in no way will you drift from
- 7:56it.
- 7:59People go, how do you not give up?
- 8:03Because my attention, my thought and my effort, my devotion is solely his.
- 8:12So whatever happens in life, in no way will you drift.
- 8:18You won't be like a ship without a rudder just floating around somewhere.
- 8:25You will not drift.
- 8:27Important.
- 8:28Why?
- 8:30Because you must focus your mind, your heart, your actions to Christ and his gospel.
- 8:42Christ is the better message.
- 8:46That's what he's saying here.
- 8:47Second, the reliability of the gospel of Christ.
- 8:52Christ's gospel is reliable.
- 8:55Hebrews 2.2, for since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable and every
- 9:04transgression or disobedience received a just retribution.
- 9:10Well we already know what angels are.
- 9:13Angels is the word angelos and angelos literally just means messengers.
- 9:20For since whether they're heavenly messengers or earthly messengers, here heavenly messengers
- 9:26is a messenger.
- 9:28We'll prove this out in Daniel chapter 9 because Daniel literally prays and God sends Gabriel
- 9:35the messenger to bring him the message, which actually fits really well in this verse.
- 9:43For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, this word proved is ginomai.
- 9:53Second favorite word in the Bible.
- 9:56Erichomai is my first.
- 9:57I just like the way it sounds and what it does.
- 10:02Ginomai.
- 10:04Remember what we talked about ginomai last week.
- 10:07It means to be brought on the stage, to be absolutely proved, to be genuine and real.
- 10:17This is the message that was brought out onto the stage of all human life.
- 10:23The grand theater of life.
- 10:28And this message was brought to us and this message was proved to be reliable.
- 10:35Now I like this word reliable because this word reliable means stable, fast, firm or
- 10:41a sure footing.
- 10:42In other words, if you were to walk on the ground, you know that this is real and reliable
- 10:48because when I place my foot down, I have full confidence I'm not going to sink.
- 10:58That's what that means.
- 10:59Reliability, stable.
- 11:02The gospel is stable.
- 11:03Christ is stable, fast and firm.
- 11:06He is our sure footing.
- 11:08He is a rock which he places us on.
- 11:11He places our feet on the rock.
- 11:14An amazing thought.
- 11:18Every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution.
- 11:23This word retribution means payment or wage, atonement.
- 11:28He paid the full price, received past tense and continues to receive.
- 11:37Every transgression means every law that was broken that you broke.
- 11:44Every transgression or disobedience.
- 11:46Now that being said, Daniel 9 verse 24.
- 11:50It's going to be difficult but it's okay because you got to be able to see this.
- 11:57When the weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city.
- 12:01So Daniel is praying.
- 12:05They're coming to the end of their captivity.
- 12:08Daniel knows when that captivity ends, they have no place.
- 12:14They feel abandoned by their God because of their sin.
- 12:18Daniel knows this.
- 12:21He knows that, wait a minute.
- 12:23What's going to happen to us when we're let go?
- 12:28So Daniel prays fervently for his people that God would please forgive them of their sin.
- 12:34Please don't forget about us.
- 12:36Please give us away.
- 12:37Please be there.
- 12:38Please.
- 12:39He's begging.
- 12:40So on doing this prayer, God sends Gabriel, the messenger.
- 12:47Gabriel brings a message.
- 12:49Interesting because it fits here.
- 12:52Gabriel brought the gospel and here it is.
- 12:5670 weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city.
- 13:02To finish the transgression.
- 13:07To put an end to sin and to atone for iniquity.
- 13:14To bring in everlasting righteousness to seal both vision and profit and to anoint a most
- 13:21holy place.
- 13:22What's really interesting about Hebrews is Hebrews answers this question.
- 13:27Every transgression received a just retribution.
- 13:31To finish the transgression.
- 13:34Do we follow the law of God or do we follow Christ?
- 13:38Is the law of God finished in Christ?
- 13:41What did he say on the cross?
- 13:43It is.
- 13:47We follow the law because we follow Christ.
- 13:51Christ fulfills the law for us and in our submission to his will and purpose in our
- 13:56lives as followers of Jesus, we do what the law requires because Christ has completed
- 14:02it for us.
- 14:03He has finished transgression.
- 14:06Transgression is over in Christ.
- 14:11You read Romans 2.
- 14:14Paul clarifies this.
- 14:16It's interesting.
- 14:19He says he completed it.
- 14:22Then he says he put an end to sin.
- 14:24Sin is disobedience.
- 14:27Rebellion against God.
- 14:30Did Jesus put an end to that?
- 14:33Yes.
- 14:34So every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution.
- 14:39The end of sin has been fulfilled in Christ.
- 14:45That does not mean you're not going to sin.
- 14:48But the penalty of our sin is gone.
- 14:51The penalty of sin is death.
- 14:53And in Christ you are alive.
- 14:57The wages of sin is death.
- 15:00We are not dead because of sin.
- 15:02We are alive because of Christ.
- 15:04And Christ has raised us from the dead spiritually and will one day raise us from the dead physically.
- 15:12Third, the just retribution and to atone for iniquity.
- 15:20Atonement.
- 15:22The payment required for sin.
- 15:25A payment on behalf of you that someone else paid on your behalf.
- 15:30It's atonement.
- 15:33That's exactly what the writer here says.
- 15:35I keep wanting to say Paul.
- 15:36I've got to be careful.
- 15:39That's exactly what the writer here says.
- 15:41Sin completed.
- 15:44Sin disobedience completed in Christ.
- 15:47Atonement paid for.
- 15:49Why?
- 15:51Because the reliability of the message of the gospel of Christ is sure.
- 15:58It is firm.
- 15:59It is stable.
- 16:01What an amazing thought.
- 16:05So this completed work of Christ has been done.
- 16:08Why?
- 16:09Because not only has he put an end to vision and profit because he is the last.
- 16:13He is the better prophet.
- 16:15He has also anointed a most holy place.
- 16:19Where is the most holy place?
- 16:21You.
- 16:24In you is a most holy place.
- 16:28And Paul reiterates this in Romans.
- 16:32He says you are living stones.
- 16:34A temple built by God.
- 16:38You are a most holy place.
- 16:41God does not reside in the building of man.
- 16:44Building made by man's hands.
- 16:46God resides in the building that he built called the church.
- 16:51An amazing thing.
- 16:54Why?
- 16:55Because his gospel is reliable.
- 16:59Christ is the better message.
- 17:02He is the greatest message.
- 17:05Hebrews 2, 3, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?
- 17:11It was declared at first by the Lord and it was attested to us by those who heard.
- 17:22How is this important?
- 17:26How can we know that what we have heard matters?
- 17:32Well let's look at this.
- 17:34First, how shall we escape?
- 17:36How shall you escape the wrath of God if you neglect the greatest gift of salvation ever
- 17:44given to man?
- 17:46That's why the road is wide and many will neglect this.
- 17:51And they will not escape the wrath of God because of it.
- 17:55But we who are on the narrow by God's grace and mercy has placed us on the narrow road
- 18:03and we have come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
- 18:07We can and have and will escape the wrath of God.
- 18:12We have not neglected the great gift of salvation.
- 18:16But if you do, how should you escape?
- 18:21You can't escape it.
- 18:22Why?
- 18:23Because this message was declared, Laleo, first by Jesus.
- 18:29This message was attested, Bebiaho, to us who heard, to us by those who heard.
- 18:41Those who heard the gospel, those who witnessed the gospel, those who lived with the gospel,
- 18:48they told us.
- 18:51This Bebiaho means to make firm, establish, or confirm.
- 18:57It's an interesting word because when you end up reading the rest in verse four, you
- 19:05understand why this word attested, this was established or confirmed by the apostles.
- 19:17To guarantee, matter of fact, we're going to even use one of them, 1 John chapters one,
- 19:22chapter one, verse one through five.
- 19:24This is what John says.
- 19:25I listen to how many times he says, heard, seen, looked.
- 19:31This is just five verses.
- 19:34That which was from the beginning, which we have heard and which we have seen with our
- 19:40own eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands concerning the word of life,
- 19:48the gospel, Jesus, the life was made manifest and we have seen it and testified to it and
- 19:58proclaimed to you the eternal life, which was with the father and was made manifest
- 20:04to us.
- 20:05It's like he says the same thing two different ways and he includes all the same terms.
- 20:14When God does that, what's he trying to tell you?
- 20:16Pay much closer attention.
- 20:21Here we go.
- 20:22It gets better.
- 20:24Verse three he says, 1 John one, verse three, that which we have seen and heard we proclaim
- 20:31also to you, this is three times, so that you may have fellowship with us so that you
- 20:40and I will be in unity and indeed our fellowship is with the father because we are in communion
- 20:46in Christ and as a result of being in Christ, we are in the father.
- 20:51Verse four, and we are writing these things, which we have seen, heard, proclaimed, touched
- 21:00so that our joy may be complete.
- 21:02Why?
- 21:03Because here is what they have seen, heard, proclaimed, touched and testify.
- 21:10This is the message we have heard from him and proclaimed to you that God is light and
- 21:17in him there is no darkness.
- 21:18Gospel.
- 21:22How many times does John have to say it for us to get what he's talking about?
- 21:29How can you escape if you neglect such a great salvation?
- 21:36So the witness of the gospel of Christ, the witness of the gospel of Christ, there's a
- 21:44lot here.
- 21:48Hebrews chapter two, verse four, while, interesting word, God also bore witness.
- 21:56Now I'm going to try to say this word.
- 22:00This word is a long one.
- 22:03That's how you say it.
- 22:09I've listened to it like 20 million times and I got the R rolling because my wife is
- 22:12Puerto Rican and I can roll the R's.
- 22:15You're not spitting, you got to roll it.
- 22:20Here we go.
- 22:23It means to attest together, to join in bearing witness or to unite in adding testimony.
- 22:34So I want you to get that.
- 22:35So when God says he also bore witness, he, God, Elohim, is bearing witness with all of
- 22:46these things.
- 22:47Now why does he do that?
- 22:48And there's one reason, is because when you're looking at bearing witness, in order for you
- 22:54to bring an accusation or charge against somebody, you must have what?
- 22:57Two or three witnesses.
- 23:01That principle still holds the same for those who claim something that you need to prove
- 23:06that that is true.
- 23:07So you need two or three witnesses.
- 23:10So listen, God does everything overboard.
- 23:15He just does because he's God.
- 23:17He doesn't just give you two or three witnesses.
- 23:19He gives you like eight witnesses.
- 23:25You ready for the witnesses?
- 23:26Here we go.
- 23:27All right.
- 23:28Soon, epi marturayo to unite and adding testimony by signs.
- 23:37Simeon.
- 23:38This word Simeon means that by which a person or a thing is distinguished from others and
- 23:44is known.
- 23:46So when we're looking at signs, we're not looking at miracles here.
- 23:50This is something that God does which brings a distinguished difference between everything
- 23:56else.
- 23:59There's a lot of signs.
- 24:01There's something clear about Christ that gives him the difference, the distinguished
- 24:07difference compared him to others.
- 24:11So signs and wonders is the next word.
- 24:15This word wonders is terras.
- 24:17The word is a remarkable event or an amazing thing out of the ordinary, something outside
- 24:22of nature.
- 24:25I think we can think of wonders.
- 24:28Raising someone from the dead is a miracle.
- 24:31That's not a wonder.
- 24:32You know what's a wonder?
- 24:34A star sitting in the sky for three years pointing to the place where Jesus was so that
- 24:40the wise man could find him.
- 24:42You know what's a wonder?
- 24:43A virgin given birth to a child whom she did not have any consummation with her husband.
- 24:49That God had chosen her out of all of the women because of who she is and who she's
- 24:56connected to providentially thousands of years before.
- 25:02That's a wonder.
- 25:04You know what else is a wonder?
- 25:07Him raising from the dead.
- 25:09You know what else is a wonder?
- 25:11That God in all of creation, the creator became human.
- 25:16That's a wonder.
- 25:18So when we're looking at the issue of wonders, that is a terras.
- 25:23Next, various miracles, dynamis.
- 25:28It's an act of power.
- 25:31It's something only God can do.
- 25:33And you remember what Jesus said?
- 25:35He says, if you don't believe my word, believe what I have done.
- 25:42We just got done talking about the resurrection of Lazarus out of the grave.
- 25:48Miracle.
- 25:49It's an act of power.
- 25:52Why?
- 25:53For the glory of God.
- 25:56And Jesus says, glorify your son.
- 25:59Why did he die?
- 26:00So that you will see the glory of God.
- 26:03That is a miracle.
- 26:06Next, by gifts.
- 26:11By gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
- 26:14So far we have had three witnesses.
- 26:17That doesn't include the witnesses I'm about to give you.
- 26:21And the witnesses we already talked about, prophets and angels.
- 26:24Here we go.
- 26:25You ready?
- 26:26The word gifts here is merismas.
- 26:29Yes, it's not the same word that's used in Corinthians.
- 26:33It's actually the word used in Corinthians is a totally different word.
- 26:38But the purpose is the same.
- 26:42For the manifestation of the Holy Spirit.
- 26:44And this is why God uses this word.
- 26:48God uses this word because it's not about you.
- 26:53Gifts were not given for you.
- 26:56Gifts are given so that you will proclaim the gospel.
- 27:00You see, gifts are merismos.
- 27:07That was the problem with the church in Corinth.
- 27:09They bragged about their spiritual gifts as if they were special.
- 27:14When they didn't realize that the gifts that they had were merismos gifts.
- 27:19This word merismos means division, partition, or distribution.
- 27:24See, there's a reason why Paul states this in Corinthians when he says this is the manifestation
- 27:30of the Holy Spirit.
- 27:32Because it's the division or the partition or the distribution of the Spirit for the
- 27:39purpose of the gospel according to his will.
- 27:44What's the will of the Spirit of God?
- 27:46Gospel.
- 27:47What's the will of the Spirit of God?
- 27:49Point you to Christ.
- 27:50What's the will of the Spirit of God?
- 27:52Conform you into the image of Christ.
- 27:54That's the will of the Spirit of God.
- 27:56The will of the Spirit of God is the same will as the Father's and the same will as
- 28:00the Son's.
- 28:02He is the exact imprint of the Father.
- 28:05There is no difference in the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.
- 28:09They are God.
- 28:10He doesn't have his own will as if he's doing something outside with his own purpose and
- 28:16his own way of doing things.
- 28:21So he does exactly what they do.
- 28:25And his will is the Father's will.
- 28:28And his will is the Son's will.
- 28:30It's Mary's most.
- 28:34So when we look at the gifts that you've been given or if the manifestation of those gifts
- 28:38are seen, please give him glory and praise that he would even use you to accomplish a
- 28:45small task.
- 28:48Because it's him who is being seen and not you.
- 28:53It's his distribution among the people to proclaim the gospel.
- 28:59He is a witness.
- 29:01So so far we have signs.
- 29:04God bears witness through signs.
- 29:06God bears witness of the gospel through wonders.
- 29:08God bears witness of the gospel through various miracles.
- 29:13God bears witness of the gospel through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
- 29:18The distribution of the Spirit of God among his people.
- 29:23Wow.
- 29:26That's how important the gospel is.
- 29:28Yes, it's so important that God sends witnesses of the gospel because it's not about you.
- 29:36About him.
- 29:40God bore witness through Christ.
- 29:43John, gospel of John chapter 5 verse 31 and 32, 37 and 39.
- 29:50If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true.
- 29:54Now you see why?
- 29:55If God did not bear witness of the gospel and of Christ through signs and wonders and
- 30:01various miracles and through the distribution of the Holy Spirit according to his will to
- 30:06his people, then he would be a liar.
- 30:12But no, God goes beyond that.
- 30:14He doesn't just give you two or three.
- 30:16So check this out.
- 30:19So Jesus says there is another who bears witness about me.
- 30:24I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.
- 30:29One that's that's called John the Baptist.
- 30:34There's another which I didn't add in here.
- 30:37I just did it now because that's what verse 33 talks about.
- 30:42Verse 37, and the father who sent me has himself bore witness about me.
- 30:48There's another, a witness.
- 30:54His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen.
- 31:0139, you search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life.
- 31:10It is they that bear witness about me.
- 31:13The scriptures bear witness of the gospel and of Christ the messenger.
- 31:19So you have the true message.
- 31:21The better messenger gives the better message and the better message is witnessed, testified
- 31:29according to signs and wonders and miracles and of the Holy Spirit and the scripture and
- 31:34the father and John the Baptist and all the things that Jesus did.
- 31:39His life is a witness.
- 31:40The whole thing is a witness.
- 31:44And we go, I don't know if I believe that.
- 31:50So I'm going to say this to you.
- 31:52How shall you escape if you neglect such a great salvation today?
- 31:56Does God need to do anything?
- 32:00Christ alone is to me is enough witness.
- 32:05But all that God the father has placed there, now you know why.
- 32:11Romans chapter one, actually let's do chapter two, verse one.
- 32:18Chapter one is full of that statement.
- 32:20Now, therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judge.
- 32:31None.
- 32:34Man is without excuse.
- 32:35God does not have to justify or do anything else than what he's already done.
- 32:41We are without excuse.
- 32:43So why does God do it?
- 32:46Because when you read Romans, he says, do you not know that it's the kindness of God
- 32:49that leads men to repentance?
- 32:51Do you know why God hasn't ended all things right now?
- 32:54Because he's kind to you.
- 32:58He is merciful.
- 33:02What more do you need?
- 33:04The power of an amazing God who has bore witness to the life of Christ and the reality of his
- 33:10divinity and then gives us an amazing message for us to go and share.
- 33:16And that's what we're going to see in the rest of chapter two.
- 33:20That's just four verses.
- 33:24So I'm going to pray and I'm going to ask John to come up and he's going to introduce
- 33:27our new members.
- 33:30And I hope this sinks in a little bit.
- 33:33An amazing four verses.
- 33:36Read them again.
- 33:37So powerful.
- 33:39The gospel is amazing.
- 33:41Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 33:45Thank you that the better messenger gave us the better message.
- 33:55That you have freed us from our transgression and our disobedience.
- 34:00And you have given it a just retribution.
- 34:03You have paid in full the debt that we owe.
- 34:07And that in spite of what we are, who we are, you have bore witness by a myriad of things
- 34:14to the reality of the gospel and to the real true King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus
- 34:19Christ.
- 34:20Lord, we give you honor, glory and praise.
- 34:23Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
- 34:27Lord, we thank you.
- 34:30We eagerly await to see you face to face.
- 34:33To praise you and to love you.
- 34:36In the name of Jesus, Amen.
