- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon, Welcome to the program here on thirteen under
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Zone. My name is Craig Way. Glad to have
- 0:05Speaker 1: you with us. US, of course, includes the producer of
- 0:08Speaker 1: the program, Cameron D.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Parker.
- 0:10Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas. Yes,
- 0:12Speaker 1: it stands for Dallas, as in his being named for
- 0:17Speaker 1: his dad's at the time favored pro football team and
- 0:21Speaker 1: became Cameron's still claims it, but refuses to watch him
- 0:24Speaker 1: and all that. It can also be d in terms
- 0:28Speaker 1: of Dallas. Dallas Mavericks with a pretty scintillating victory last
- 0:33Speaker 1: night of the Golden State Wars.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Did you get a chance to see any of that
- 0:35Speaker 2: last night?
- 0:36Speaker 3: I thought Steph Curry missed in some clutch free throws. Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 3: I think a stat I saw from Mark Followell, of
- 0:42Speaker 3: course to Dallas Mavericks TV broadcaster. I think going into
- 0:45Speaker 3: the fourth quarter in games, I think under five points
- 0:49Speaker 3: or the margin was in between five points, Steph Curry
- 0:52Speaker 3: was like forty four or forty seven on free throws,
- 0:55Speaker 3: and weird to see him struggle at the line. And
- 0:59Speaker 3: I'm curious, Craig, like, I almost want to go up
- 1:01Speaker 3: to Dallas and go to a Mavericks scheme, just to
- 1:02Speaker 3: get the vibe of the fan base, Like, if you're
- 1:04Speaker 3: a Dallas Mavericks fan, are you like Man good Win
- 1:06Speaker 3: last night or are you going who cares Luca's playing
- 1:09Speaker 3: for the Lakers? How about Luca? He didn't look good
- 1:12Speaker 3: lesson at all? Yeah, right, you know, we're not surprising.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I think to the first part
- 1:18Speaker 1: of what you're you're asking, I think when you say,
- 1:21Speaker 1: are their fans excited about the Mavericks or at least
- 1:23Speaker 1: rooting for them? Or are their fans that have checked out?
- 1:26Speaker 1: Because I think the answer is yes to both. I
- 1:28Speaker 1: think there's some to both. Uh, there were there were
- 1:31Speaker 1: some examples of that.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Last night.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Was a George saddano I guess was working the court
- 1:39Speaker 1: side reporter for ESPN, and he talked to a lot
- 1:42Speaker 1: of fans, several of whom said they were just devastated
- 1:46Speaker 1: by the trade, angry with the management. They said, but
- 1:50Speaker 1: they love their guys and they're going to continue to
- 1:53Speaker 1: root for their guys. I'm a Mavericks fan.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Going back to their expansion year when, as I pointed
- 2:02Speaker 1: out the other day, part of putting myself through college
- 2:05Speaker 1: selling T shirts and merchandise at concerts for bands. I
- 2:10Speaker 1: also worked the Mavericks expansion year eighty eighty one when
- 2:13Speaker 1: they went fifteen and sixty seven, when they had Brad
- 2:16Speaker 1: Davis and Jim Spinarkle in the backcourt and.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Scott Lloyd on the front line and.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Jay Vince well, let's see, Jay Vincent came in the
- 2:28Speaker 1: second year, Abdul Jilani.
- 2:31Speaker 2: They had those guys that first year.
- 2:33Speaker 1: They went fifteen and sixty seven, and I became a
- 2:35Speaker 1: Mavericks fan, even though I'd been a Lakers fan as
- 2:37Speaker 1: a kid during the Jerry Wes Wilt Chamberlin era, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: really became a Lakers showtime fan, you know, with with
- 2:46Speaker 1: during those showtime teams of the eighties with Magic Johnson
- 2:49Speaker 1: and you know, and James Worthy and Byron Scott and
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know, all all of those guys, Kurt Rambus and
- 2:58Speaker 1: of course Kareem So But I but I never straight
- 3:03Speaker 1: far from once I adopted the Mavericks as truly my
- 3:07Speaker 1: favorite team, and they still are. And I thought about
- 3:10Speaker 1: this last night. I thought about, you know, do you
- 3:14Speaker 1: do you just totally check out on this and I
- 3:17Speaker 1: think I think this might be and you can help
- 3:21Speaker 1: me out on this camera. This might be similar to
- 3:24Speaker 1: what a lot of disenfranchised Cowboys fans feel because of
- 3:27Speaker 1: the ownership and the management and the way that the
- 3:29Speaker 1: ball club is run now. The Mavericks have had far
- 3:32Speaker 1: more recent success than the Cowboys. The Mavericks have won
- 3:36Speaker 1: an NBA World title, They've been to the finals a
- 3:39Speaker 1: couple of other times, including last year. But certainly a
- 3:45Speaker 1: lot of them feel like their hearts were ripped out
- 3:46Speaker 1: when this trade came down, and that there seemed to
- 3:50Speaker 1: be this pervasive attitude on the part of ownership and
- 3:54Speaker 1: management that they don't really care. They're going to do
- 3:58Speaker 1: this and they don't really care. I read when I
- 4:01Speaker 1: was at the ballpark on Tuesday, when you were out
- 4:03Speaker 1: on Tuesday came I read that that piece written by
- 4:07Speaker 1: Ralph strangis the former Dallas Stars play by playvoice, just
- 4:11Speaker 1: as incend the area as it can get about what
- 4:16Speaker 1: a horrible mess of things this new own ownership and
- 4:21Speaker 1: management has made of it, starting with the trade and
- 4:25Speaker 1: then just making a bad situation worse by ejecting fans
- 4:30Speaker 1: from the arena for saying fire Nico and holding up
- 4:33Speaker 1: signs and things like that, and that they just really
- 4:38Speaker 1: don't care at all. Uh. He's since penned a couple
- 4:41Speaker 1: other articles urging the the the owner of the club,
- 4:47Speaker 1: urging her to sell the club or at the very
- 4:50Speaker 1: least get rid of the Dufus Dumont who is who
- 4:55Speaker 1: is running things for that? And and Dufus Dumont Yeah, yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and a character from Pink Panther.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Well, you know.
- 5:02Speaker 1: The funny thing is if you've seen him, Patrick Dumont.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, kind a little uh Al Davis five yet you
- 5:10Speaker 2: know who else he looks like?
- 5:12Speaker 1: And Mike Deucy, the longtime sports anchor and Dallas fort Worth,
- 5:16Speaker 1: pointed this out as well on Twitter. Uh, he looks
- 5:19Speaker 1: like a young, very young addition of my good friend, uh,
- 5:24Speaker 1: George Dunham of the Ticket in Dallas. George looked a
- 5:28Speaker 1: lot like Dumont did back in the day.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Now George is.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Older now and has gray hair like many of us
- 5:33Speaker 1: do when we get into you know, our advanced years.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But he did he looked likely and said Doocey says, like,
- 5:39Speaker 1: what's George Dunham doing being quoted you know or.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Something like that. It was Dumont's quotes on that.
- 5:44Speaker 1: But so there's there's all of this angst from Mavericks
- 5:51Speaker 1: fans about this deal and about how shabbily they've been treated,
- 5:58Speaker 1: as evidenced by those who were escorted from the building
- 6:01Speaker 1: basically for voicing opposition, and as strangers pointed out, better
- 6:05Speaker 1: be careful, don't be caught booing or you'll be kicked
- 6:08Speaker 1: out of the building. Can you imagine that in Philadelphia
- 6:12Speaker 1: with with how they turned on Joel mb last night
- 6:16Speaker 1: when he when he stepped in to try to take
- 6:19Speaker 1: a shot and then turn the ball over and and
- 6:22Speaker 1: the Sixers fans just just laid into him afterwards. So
- 6:26Speaker 1: they've been booing in New York and Philly in places
- 6:29Speaker 1: like that for a long long time. So it's not
- 6:32Speaker 1: commonplace in Dallas, uh to boo boo Mavericks management, especially
- 6:38Speaker 1: given the fact that the great relationship that the fans
- 6:42Speaker 1: have with Mark Cuban for decades, and now that he's
- 6:46Speaker 1: a minority owner has divested his majority share.
- 6:50Speaker 2: There's all of this word about how if.
- 6:53Speaker 1: All of this was just about getting casino gambling in Dallas,
- 6:57Speaker 1: forget it.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's being you're you're you're ruining.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Your opportunity to do that, so you might as well
- 7:02Speaker 1: sell the club or at least get different management in here.
- 7:04Speaker 1: That's been the slant and the opinion voice by many,
- 7:08Speaker 1: including as I mentioned Ralph Strange's in that piece that
- 7:10Speaker 1: he wrote the other day that quoted from so.
- 7:14Speaker 2: But as a.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Mavericks fan and feeling the conflicted nature of this, I
- 7:21Speaker 1: still found myself rooting for the team last night.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I wanted them to do well.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I was happy with the outstanding game that Kyrie Irving
- 7:31Speaker 1: had last night. And when Kyrie came in, this is
- 7:34Speaker 1: his third season the club. When he came in a
- 7:35Speaker 1: couple of years ago, I was kind of skeptical as
- 7:37Speaker 1: to whether it would work with him and Luca because
- 7:40Speaker 1: of the type a's that they are, the personalities and
- 7:44Speaker 1: all that.
- 7:45Speaker 2: But Kyrie has been.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Pretty close to a model citizen.
- 7:51Speaker 2: He's been a great basketball player since the trade.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yeah, so he played well, and then this team is
- 7:56Speaker 1: so hurt right now. They're so shorthanded, they're so banged
- 7:59Speaker 1: up up. They don't have lightly, they don't have Gafford.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You know, they ad who they get in the trade,
- 8:05Speaker 1: Anthony Davis. He's not available, and yet they continue to
- 8:09Speaker 1: fight and they found a way to win that game.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Now they're going to struggle and right now they'd be
- 8:15Speaker 1: in the play in and they're trying to get out
- 8:17Speaker 1: of that and see if thing rise above. They're going
- 8:20Speaker 1: to have to have some other big efforts and other
- 8:22Speaker 1: big games. But don't they have Miami the Knight's back
- 8:24Speaker 1: to back. I have to turn around and play the Heat.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Miami's playing on the back to back as well. Yeah, okay,
- 8:31Speaker 1: And by the way I saw, I don't know what
- 8:36Speaker 1: you felt about it. I saw flashes of Jimmy Butler
- 8:41Speaker 1: with the Warriors and what he's capable of doing.
- 8:45Speaker 2: But I also saw a lot of standing around.
- 8:47Speaker 1: He didn't He doesn't look completely comfortable within the within
- 8:52Speaker 1: the system yet.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's gonna take some time, I think for the
- 8:56Speaker 3: Warriors to kind of gel, you know. And and last
- 9:00Speaker 3: night you could kind of see it in the fourth
- 9:02Speaker 3: quarter because what you like to be able to do
- 9:04Speaker 3: with your Warriors, if you're the Warriors, and especially Steve Kerr,
- 9:08Speaker 3: is so much of what the Warriors do is around
- 9:11Speaker 3: Steph Curry. But opposing defenses, you're not worrying about Klay Thompson,
- 9:16Speaker 3: You're not worrying about Wiggins, You're not worrying about Jordan
- 9:20Speaker 3: Poole anymore. So you can kind of lock in on
- 9:23Speaker 3: Steph Curry. They don't really have a stretch five anymore.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So the Jimmy Butler move is, you know, to alleviate
- 9:28Speaker 3: some of the offensive, you know, duties off of Steph Curry.
- 9:33Speaker 3: And it's gonna take some time for them to get there.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so as well. Linda was kind of
- 9:39Speaker 1: taken aback by the Warriors' uniforms. See, this is how
- 9:41Speaker 1: I know I'm married the right person is that she's
- 9:44Speaker 1: starting to take notice of nerdy things that does regular
- 9:47Speaker 1: sports people take note of. She was used to watching
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Warriors. She goes, aren't there red colors? Blue and gold?
- 9:57Speaker 1: Aren't they blue in the ey? I said, yeah, well
- 9:58Speaker 1: what's with the red? I said, well, you'd have to
- 10:01Speaker 1: go back historically. Really, this goes back to even when
- 10:04Speaker 1: they were the Philadelphia Warriors in the forties, fifties and
- 10:09Speaker 1: early sixties, before the franchise moved to San Francisco, and
- 10:11Speaker 1: their colors were kind of a blue and gold, but
- 10:15Speaker 1: they had red. I said that in fact, that font
- 10:18Speaker 1: Warriors font in red. If you go back and you
- 10:21Speaker 1: look at you know, in the late fifties, early sixties
- 10:24Speaker 1: when Will Chamberlain was playing for them, they kind of
- 10:26Speaker 1: had that uniform. She goes, I don't think it works,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and she goes, it obviously doesn't bother you. And as well,
- 10:33Speaker 1: I looked at it from the historical perspective and I
- 10:35Speaker 1: love it.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. Yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 1: So you know, I have a wife who's now becoming
- 10:41Speaker 1: a uniform geek as well.
- 10:42Speaker 2: She takes looks, you know, takes a look at that.
- 10:45Speaker 1: All right, coming up, we're gonna do several things today
- 10:50Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour. We're going to talk some
- 10:52Speaker 1: baseball because Major League Baseball spring training camps are open.
- 10:58Speaker 1: The Houston Asteroids have lost another pe of the world
- 11:03Speaker 1: championship teams that they had in twenty seventeen in twenty
- 11:08Speaker 1: twenty two, a major piece off of that free agent signing.
- 11:13Speaker 2: We'll get to that.
- 11:14Speaker 1: We'll talk about the Texas women's basketball game tonight. We're
- 11:18Speaker 1: going here from Breonna Preston. Right, we've got some Bret Preston.
- 11:21Speaker 1: We'll hear from has Texas Place, Kentucky. A big game
- 11:23Speaker 1: tonight for the Texas women on the road that's at
- 11:26Speaker 1: six o'clock, which you can hear on one of three
- 11:28Speaker 1: point one FM. Roger Wallace will join Kathy Arsham for
- 11:31Speaker 1: the call of that one. We're drawing closer to the
- 11:35Speaker 1: start of Long Hornon baseball season. It's tomorrow night, the
- 11:38Speaker 1: opener against the Louisville Cardinals. Keith Mortland will join me
- 11:41Speaker 1: for the call of that one from Globelike Field in Arlington.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And yes, Long Worn men's basketball. There's a Long Warn
- 11:46Speaker 1: weekly with Rodney Terry tonight at six o'clock at Pluckers
- 11:50Speaker 1: the West Campus location here in Austin, and Texas of
- 11:55Speaker 1: course is getting ready to play Kentucky on Saturday night,
- 11:58Speaker 1: so a lot to get two more NBA as well,
- 12:03Speaker 1: and as always we open up the text line for
- 12:05Speaker 1: your questions, your thoughts, your comments. You are free to
- 12:09Speaker 1: do that and we welcome those questions, thoughts and comments.
- 12:12Speaker 1: All you have to do is text the word Texas
- 12:14Speaker 1: follow by your question or comment to eight one five
- 12:17Speaker 1: three zero. Again, you text the word Texas followed by
- 12:20Speaker 1: your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Stay with us
- 12:25Speaker 1: here on a Thursday afternoon on thirteen under.
- 12:27Speaker 5: The Zone, It's the Craig Way Show with the voice
- 12:33Speaker 5: of the Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig
- 12:37Speaker 5: Way on a Thursday afternoon.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Here in the great City of Austin, Texas, USA. I
- 12:59Speaker 1: do think about that from time to time. I know,
- 13:03Speaker 1: we as a society sometimes are accused of not being
- 13:09Speaker 1: grateful enough for what we have, and you know, the
- 13:13Speaker 1: things that we have, and I try to keep that
- 13:17Speaker 1: in mind, the appreciation and gratitude of things. And part
- 13:22Speaker 1: of it is just living in this area, because I
- 13:25Speaker 1: haven't lived all over the country, but I've been all
- 13:29Speaker 1: over the country. I think I've been in forty seven
- 13:34Speaker 1: of the fifty states. How many of the states have
- 13:35Speaker 1: you been in, Cameron m United States? You've been in
- 13:40Speaker 1: a lot.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I don't know the top of my head. Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 1: For me, it's obviously easier to count off the states
- 13:49Speaker 1: that I haven't been in than the ones that I have.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Like I said, the only ones I haven't been in
- 13:54Speaker 1: you've been in. I think, uh, all three of the
- 14:02Speaker 1: states that I haven't been in because of your time
- 14:05Speaker 1: doing baseball. So like I haven't been in Montana, you
- 14:13Speaker 1: were you were you were based what in in in Montana?
- 14:17Speaker 2: Right? It wasn't based. We we played some baseball games
- 14:20Speaker 2: in Montana. Yeah, in exactly.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I haven't been in North Dakota and
- 14:26Speaker 1: you've been there. Where where was your team based? We're
- 14:31Speaker 1: in South Dakota, Spearfish, Spearfish. Okay, all right. So the
- 14:36Speaker 1: only three states I haven't been in been in uh
- 14:39Speaker 1: are Montana, North Dakota, and Alaska. Haven't been to Alaska. Well,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I messed up my chance to go to Alaska. There
- 14:46Speaker 1: were a couple of things that got away. First of all,
- 14:47Speaker 1: my first year doing the basketball played by PLAYO one
- 14:50Speaker 1: oh two, Texas did play in the Great Alaska Shootout
- 14:54Speaker 1: when that was still a viable holiday tournament. It isn't
- 14:57Speaker 1: any longer. It's like a Division two EVENTU I couldn't.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I couldn't go up there for that because of football
- 15:06Speaker 1: working with Bill Schoening, I think on the Texas A
- 15:09Speaker 1: and M game that year and oh one. But then
- 15:12Speaker 1: the other thing is I have three brothers. One of
- 15:15Speaker 1: those retired Air Force but he lived in Alaska by
- 15:18Speaker 1: Fairbanks for like eight years, and it never went up there,
- 15:22Speaker 1: never went up there. He used to say, don't come
- 15:24Speaker 1: up here unless you come in the summertime because it
- 15:26Speaker 1: gets pretty cold.
- 15:26Speaker 2: In the winter, although we were used to it.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And I said, I remember talking to him doing all
- 15:29Speaker 1: the Super Bowl Sunday once and it was seventy degrees
- 15:34Speaker 1: here in the Austin area, and I said, what's a
- 15:35Speaker 1: temperature there right now?
- 15:36Speaker 2: I go, look, we're forty two below. He says it.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Matter of fact, we went forty two below.
- 15:45Speaker 1: He goes, yeah, you know, you get used to it,
- 15:46Speaker 1: but you stay inside and you know you learned it.
- 15:49Speaker 1: So to roll it back to what I'm talking about
- 15:51Speaker 1: about being grateful for things, grateful to live in a
- 15:55Speaker 1: in a in a very climate friendly environment here in
- 16:02Speaker 1: the Greater Austin area. Yeah, we get our cold from
- 16:05Speaker 1: time to time, and yeah it gets blistering hot in
- 16:06Speaker 1: the summer.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But the heat doesn't bother me the way it does
- 16:09Speaker 2: a lot of people.
- 16:10Speaker 3: You know, well, maybe you'll be able to go to
- 16:12Speaker 3: Alaska if Texas does play in a regional you know,
- 16:14Speaker 3: a Sashningle city yesterday.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I love that. I love that.
- 16:17Speaker 1: He be I'll take being a number four when he
- 16:19Speaker 1: say number four in Alaska Anchorage. In Anchorage, he'd say,
- 16:23Speaker 1: because that would mean you're in the field. If you
- 16:25Speaker 1: take a number four seed in that because you can't
- 16:29Speaker 1: get to Omaha, but you don't play in a regional. No,
- 16:32Speaker 1: you got to play in and win a regional, and
- 16:33Speaker 1: then you got to play in and win a super regional.
- 16:36Speaker 1: And there are very early, believe it or not, baseball
- 16:39Speaker 1: projections that have Texas in a regional. And you knew
- 16:47Speaker 1: this was coming, that they would be slated in a
- 16:52Speaker 1: super regional to match up with Texas A and M
- 16:56Speaker 1: in College Station. Last year the Longhorns went to College
- 17:00Speaker 1: Station for the region. Everybody knew just kind of had
- 17:02Speaker 1: a feeling that was coming because it was the last
- 17:06Speaker 1: time the NCAA would have the opportunity to put Texas
- 17:10Speaker 1: and Texas A and M in a regional because you
- 17:12Speaker 1: can't do that by you know, baseball, you know, configuration,
- 17:18Speaker 1: can't do that. You can't you can't align them in
- 17:20Speaker 1: the same region. They can be in a super but
- 17:22Speaker 1: not in a region. So we knew it was coming,
- 17:26Speaker 1: and it happened, and and then of course this year
- 17:30Speaker 1: they're saying, well, yeah, they'll they'll be in a regional
- 17:33Speaker 1: and A and m's preseason number one in one of
- 17:35Speaker 1: the polls and all that other kind of stuff, So
- 17:38Speaker 1: we'll see that'll be fun. But the season opens tomorrow
- 17:41Speaker 1: night in Arlington and you'll hear it here on thirteen
- 17:47Speaker 1: under the zune. All right, tell me if you're disappointed
- 17:49Speaker 1: on this NBA All Star weekend, it's coming up San Francisco.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It's where it's gonna end. And they got all kinds
- 17:59Speaker 1: of different they're doing everything, but playing a real basketball.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Game is what they're doing, you know, because they've got.
- 18:04Speaker 1: These three teams plus the Rising Stars group and it's
- 18:08Speaker 1: kind of like a little mini tournament kind of thing.
- 18:12Speaker 2: And so you got that.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Then there was talk of having a rematch on the
- 18:20Speaker 1: three point shooting event between Steph Curry and Sabrina and Escue.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Not gonna happen.
- 18:25Speaker 1: NBA announced today it's not gonna happen, not gonna be
- 18:27Speaker 1: part of the lineup.
- 18:29Speaker 2: They said that.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Talks went on for weeks to try to make it happen,
- 18:33Speaker 1: even stretching into this week, and there were people thought
- 18:38Speaker 1: it was definitely gonna happen because it's on Curry's home floor.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Ascue's from the Bay Area. She grew up watching Curry
- 18:47Speaker 1: and the Warriors. But the NBA spokesman Mike Bass said, quote,
- 18:51Speaker 1: we weren't able to land on a plan we thought
- 18:54Speaker 1: would raise the bar off of last year's special moment.
- 18:58Speaker 1: We all agreed not to proceed in well instead keep
- 19:00Speaker 1: the focus on All Star.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Sunday's new format.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Curry said he wanted the rematch to occur, and then
- 19:07Speaker 1: we're talks of making it a two on two with
- 19:09Speaker 1: Clay Thompson and.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Caitlyn Clark involved.
- 19:13Speaker 1: But Clark's representative said last month she wanted her first
- 19:16Speaker 1: three point contests to come at the w NBA All
- 19:19Speaker 1: Star Weekend in Indianapolis and would not participate in a
- 19:22Speaker 1: special challenge during NBA All Star Weekend. So it went
- 19:26Speaker 1: back and forth. You go back to this guy from
- 19:29Speaker 1: the NBA. We weren't able to land on a plan
- 19:33Speaker 1: we thought would raise the bar off of last year's
- 19:35Speaker 1: special moment. Translation. Maybe they didn't offer enough money. Maybe
- 19:43Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, they're shooting well, I mean,
- 19:46Speaker 1: what do you what are you want? What you know?
- 19:51Speaker 1: How can you upgrade a shooting contest? That's all it is.
- 19:55Speaker 1: It's a shooting contest. It's not supposed to be anything else,
- 20:00Speaker 1: horse or you know, something else. I mean, how could
- 20:03Speaker 1: they make it better? I don't know how they could
- 20:05Speaker 1: make it better.
- 20:05Speaker 3: And I think, you know, a lot of these players,
- 20:07Speaker 3: you know, maybe they just want some time off. You know,
- 20:09Speaker 3: not everybody wants to play and participate in the three
- 20:13Speaker 3: point shooting contest and the Skills Challenge the Dunk contest
- 20:17Speaker 3: because they just want some time off.
- 20:19Speaker 2: You know.
- 20:19Speaker 3: It's a long season. Like I'm sure Steph Cray would
- 20:22Speaker 3: love an extra day off. And if you do these
- 20:24Speaker 3: type of events, then you probably have more media responsibilities
- 20:27Speaker 3: and more events. You got to show up in more
- 20:29Speaker 3: interviews and social media poice posts, and then you got
- 20:33Speaker 3: to actually, you know, participate and yeah, you're just shooting
- 20:35Speaker 3: and stuff. But like, you know, I'm sure like some
- 20:39Speaker 3: of these guys, like you know what, they turned down
- 20:41Speaker 3: the three point contests and the dunk contest not because
- 20:43Speaker 3: they don't want to participate, but because you know, I
- 20:46Speaker 3: kind of want a night off. And I don't blame
- 20:48Speaker 3: the guys. The same thing with the home run hitting
- 20:49Speaker 3: home run, Yeah, you know, participate in that. I'm sure
- 20:52Speaker 3: that takes a lot of that out of you.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Right, Yep.
- 20:55Speaker 3: The home run derby a lot more than probably the
- 20:57Speaker 3: three point shooting contest, but it.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Didn't really wreck tioscar Hernandez too much last year after
- 21:04Speaker 1: he won the thing, he had a big second half
- 21:07Speaker 1: as well. But you know, and ask you said, we've
- 21:09Speaker 1: been talking about finding different ways to change this up
- 21:13Speaker 1: next year.
- 21:14Speaker 2: That's what she said.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Last year's year is I think he has a partner
- 21:16Speaker 1: in mind that's going to join him. So I'm going
- 21:18Speaker 1: to open any partner that can help me win and
- 21:20Speaker 1: take that belt that he has up front and center
- 21:22Speaker 1: away from him because he won last year twenty nine
- 21:24Speaker 1: to twenty six on the deal. I think the two
- 21:27Speaker 1: on two thing would be good. Do you guard the
- 21:30Speaker 1: other show? Are you playing two on two or are
- 21:33Speaker 1: you just two on two? Like what best Ball and
- 21:37Speaker 1: Golf alternate shot?
- 21:39Speaker 2: I yes, you know.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Look maybe I'm a little jaded on this, but I'm
- 21:47Speaker 1: here to tell you there's only so much you can
- 21:50Speaker 1: do with a shooting contest. You're shooting, I don't know,
- 21:56Speaker 1: unless you're really doing crazy, you know, like that what
- 21:58Speaker 1: was the old match bird thing off the roof, down
- 22:01Speaker 1: through the garage, bounce of a you know whatever, nothing
- 22:04Speaker 1: but net that, you.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Know, unless you're doing some.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Harlem globe trotter trick shots stuff. Otherwise it's just shooting
- 22:15Speaker 1: and people enjoy watching guys shoot and girls shoot. There's
- 22:19Speaker 1: nothing wrong with watching men and women, you know, fill
- 22:22Speaker 1: it up and knock down long rain shots.
- 22:25Speaker 2: It's kind of fun. It's it might be something different.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I don't know, but I don't I don't know that
- 22:32Speaker 1: you can gussie it up too much, is what I'm saying.
- 22:37Speaker 1: It gets to a point where on a certain level,
- 22:39Speaker 1: it is what it is. It's a shooting contest. So
- 22:42Speaker 1: we'll see. And I and I think also they're just
- 22:45Speaker 1: trying to find other ways to, you know, dress up
- 22:47Speaker 1: the All Star weekend.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I hope this, I really do.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I hope this whatever Chuck and Shack and Kenny team
- 22:58Speaker 1: thing with the rising Star thing, I hope it works out.
- 23:00Speaker 1: But I have a feeling it's people are going to
- 23:02Speaker 1: look and go, Okay, all right, these guys that are
- 23:04Speaker 1: out there playing together, but no big thing, you know,
- 23:08Speaker 1: because it is an exhibition at some point. All right,
- 23:12Speaker 1: Coming up next, we bring you in Conceivable for a
- 23:16Speaker 1: Thursday afternoon here on EM thirteen under the Zone, Craig
- 23:19Speaker 1: Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker, and glad to have
- 23:23Speaker 1: you with us, and as always, we open up the
- 23:27Speaker 1: text line to you if you have a question or
- 23:30Speaker 1: thought of comments something you'd like us to hear, we're
- 23:34Speaker 1: more than happy to hear that. So if you've got
- 23:40Speaker 1: something you want to hit us up with, feel free
- 23:44Speaker 1: to do that. Again, you just text the word texts
- 23:46Speaker 1: followed by your question or comment to eight one five
- 23:49Speaker 1: three zero.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Right before the top of the hour, I was running
- 23:56Speaker 1: down at least just a couple of selections off that
- 23:59Speaker 1: list of the high paid athletes from last year in
- 24:02Speaker 1: the world, and again, this is just what they earned
- 24:05Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four. It's not deferred money. It's not
- 24:11Speaker 1: total contract money things like that where we've looked at,
- 24:15Speaker 1: you know, those heavy duty contracts of Shoeotani or Patrick
- 24:19Speaker 1: Mahomes those, it's it's just last year. For example, by
- 24:24Speaker 1: the way, when I was mentioning Shoeotani, he's only twenty
- 24:32Speaker 1: first last year seventy two and a half million dollars.
- 24:36Speaker 1: But the lion's share of the money that he got,
- 24:40Speaker 1: as we mentioned, which interpreter, well he did according now
- 24:45Speaker 1: its interpreters behind bars, but seventy of his seventy two
- 24:50Speaker 1: and a half million dollars came off endorsements off of that.
- 24:53Speaker 1: But in looking at this list, I mentioned Christianna Ronaldo
- 24:58Speaker 1: was number one, Steph Curry two, tie Some Fury third,
- 25:01Speaker 1: Leannel Melsi four, Lebron number five, Neymar six. I guess
- 25:08Speaker 1: this is a boxer, Alexander Yusik.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he is probably a boxer. He is from the Ukraine.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Kareem Bezema Benzima Benzima number eight.
- 25:25Speaker 2: You mentioned him, Bappy. He is for Real Madrid. He's
- 25:28Speaker 2: number nine.
- 25:28Speaker 1: John Rahm rounds up the top ten and number ten,
- 25:30Speaker 1: and Scotti Schffler is eleventh off of that number twelve
- 25:35Speaker 1: Dak Prescott number twelve.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Highest paid athlete.
- 25:40Speaker 1: In the world last year was Dak Prescott one hundred
- 25:45Speaker 1: million dollars counting endorsements and everything there, more so than Giannis,
- 25:51Speaker 1: Kevin Durant, Jared Goff, Jordan Love, Rory McElroy, Max Verstappen,
- 25:57Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes or Canelo Alvarez that finished out the top twenty. There,
- 26:01Speaker 1: Dak Prescott made more money than shoe a Otani. Dak
- 26:04Speaker 1: Prescott Stafford did two. Huh is it Matt Stafford?
- 26:08Speaker 2: Uh No?
- 26:09Speaker 1: Max First Stappin, Max First the f one driver. Yeah,
- 26:15Speaker 1: Tiger was twenty seventh. Last year, Luca was thirty fourth,
- 26:21Speaker 1: Jokic thirty second, Jimmy Butler thirty third, Joel mb was
- 26:24Speaker 1: thirty first, Max Schurzer forty first, SGA just behind Max
- 26:32Speaker 1: Schurzer with Shay gilds As Alexander forty second highest paid
- 26:37Speaker 1: athlete in the world last year.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I'm trying to see if there's somebody.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Who's Aaron Rodgers is fifty sixth uh Deshaun Watson was
- 26:46Speaker 1: sixty first, Josh Allen was fifty seventh, tied for fifty
- 26:49Speaker 1: seven with Terrell Hatton.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Uh oh, yeah.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Justin Verlander was seventieth, Jalen Hurts Super Bowl champion, jose
- 27:01Speaker 1: Al Tuve seventy sixth, Kyler Murray number eighty, just behind
- 27:06Speaker 1: Fred van Vliet. How about that, Pascal Siaka eighty first,
- 27:13Speaker 1: Drew Holiday eighty fourth, Ben Simmons eighty fifth, Mike Trout
- 27:17Speaker 1: eighty six. Matthew Stafford is eighty ninth on that list.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Corey Seger ninety fourth on the list at number one
- 27:25Speaker 1: hundred was Daniel Jones, just behind Baker Mayfield. It was
- 27:30Speaker 1: ninety ninth on the list. Is Yeah, so that's the
- 27:34Speaker 1: top one hundred. Let's hear from Texas women's head coach
- 27:38Speaker 1: Vick Shae for a huge game tonight as Texas takes
- 27:41Speaker 1: on Kentucky at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, and wanted to
- 27:48Speaker 1: hear from Vic his thoughts on this matchup with Kentucky
- 27:55Speaker 1: and also just coming off the win over South Carolina
- 28:00Speaker 1: and how big a boost it was for his team
- 28:05Speaker 1: and what the home crowd did for his team.
- 28:10Speaker 6: So Vick on the home crowd went over USC, I
- 28:14Speaker 6: want to want to thank our fans. UH have a
- 28:18Speaker 6: chance to We had obviously had great crowds last week,
- 28:21Speaker 6: and you know, you know I look across the country, y'all,
- 28:25Speaker 6: and I don't see that just everywhere.
- 28:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:29Speaker 6: I turned on the TV last night and looked at
- 28:32Speaker 6: an arena that was pretty much empty, And you know,
- 28:36Speaker 6: I just really want to thank our fans. Our part
- 28:40Speaker 6: of building a program, as I told you all a
- 28:43Speaker 6: long time ago, is your fan base. You know, I
- 28:45Speaker 6: think we had some apathy here when we took the job.
- 28:48Speaker 6: Obviously we're in a different arena, much bigger place. But
- 28:52Speaker 6: part of building a program is not just your ex'es
- 28:55Speaker 6: and o's. It's not your wins and losses. It's building
- 28:57Speaker 6: your fan base. And I think what we've been able
- 29:01Speaker 6: to do in a really short period of time here,
- 29:03Speaker 6: I'm really proud of our kids deserve a lot of
- 29:06Speaker 6: the credit because of the style of play they play.
- 29:09Speaker 6: They're fun to watch. Our fans really enjoy them. You
- 29:13Speaker 6: can tell after a ballgame they stick around. I promise you,
- 29:17Speaker 6: Madison Booker, Rory Harmon, the rest of my team. They're
- 29:20Speaker 6: signing the same autographs, taking the same picture with the
- 29:24Speaker 6: same person after every game.
- 29:27Speaker 2: But you know what, that's okay.
- 29:29Speaker 6: If that's what it takes to build a fan base,
- 29:33Speaker 6: we're going to do it. And that's again part of
- 29:37Speaker 6: I call them the people's team. You know, there's people
- 29:40Speaker 6: up up in the stands. There's little old ladies up
- 29:43Speaker 6: there that got a dozen cookies. They think those are
- 29:45Speaker 6: their girls, not mine. They don't think they're Texas team.
- 29:49Speaker 6: They think they're their team. And that's okay, And that's really.
- 29:53Speaker 2: What you want.
- 29:54Speaker 6: You want to build that that atmosphere of ownership and
- 30:00Speaker 6: you know, that's my team. And I can remember at
- 30:03Speaker 6: Mississippi State, Blair came out of a game in an
- 30:06Speaker 6: NCAA tournament I chastised her all the way down the bench,
- 30:09Speaker 6: and I'm going to tell y'all, I got criticized for
- 30:11Speaker 6: a lot, but I have never had a butte and
- 30:13Speaker 6: from my fan base like I got after that game
- 30:15Speaker 6: from just about everybody in the arena, and you know,
- 30:19Speaker 6: but that was their ownership of the team, and you know,
- 30:25Speaker 6: it's just it's really refreshing.
- 30:28Speaker 2: And again it's I don't think.
- 30:30Speaker 6: We take it for granted because it's not like that everywhere, y'all.
- 30:33Speaker 2: And it's not like that consistently.
- 30:35Speaker 6: I mean, I think we've consistently been having great crowds
- 30:38Speaker 6: this year. Our Thursday night crowd was really good, seven thousand,
- 30:43Speaker 6: and then to have that crowd on Sunday was.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Obviously really special.
- 30:47Speaker 6: So I really want to say thank you to our
- 30:49Speaker 6: community and our fan base.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Again.
- 30:51Speaker 6: Our kids appreciate it, I appreciated My coaching staff appreciates
- 30:56Speaker 6: it so much, and I appreciate y'all's coverage. What you're
- 30:59Speaker 6: doing for our it doesn't go unnoticed. And for me
- 31:03Speaker 6: as a coach, I want you to how much I
- 31:05Speaker 6: appreciate you.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Okay, you know he's right about the.
- 31:12Speaker 1: About the fan base thing about their being at fan
- 31:14Speaker 1: apathy when he first came in, because I'm telling you,
- 31:16Speaker 1: I started doing the play by play for the women
- 31:18Speaker 1: in the ninety seven to ninety eight season, and I
- 31:20Speaker 1: can remember there were some years in there where it
- 31:24Speaker 1: was somewhere between twenty five hundred and four.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Thousand at most.
- 31:27Speaker 1: And now it's consistently big crowds, and that was a sellout.
- 31:30Speaker 1: There'll be a sellout this Sunday for LSU. It's pretty cool.
- 31:33Speaker 1: So what about the win over USC the effect that
- 31:37Speaker 1: that had on.
- 31:38Speaker 2: His team with two big games coming this week, Well, I.
- 31:40Speaker 6: Mean, I think our team has confidence. They know that
- 31:43Speaker 6: that just like they said, they really believe, they believe
- 31:48Speaker 6: they're good enough. You know, they believe they can they
- 31:50Speaker 6: can win it all. And so again my thing is, Okay,
- 31:57Speaker 6: we can't talk it. We got to walk it. You know,
- 31:59Speaker 6: we've got to do it every day. We've got to
- 32:03Speaker 6: go through the process of what that takes to do.
- 32:05Speaker 6: And so but I think the wins have certainly given
- 32:08Speaker 6: them confidence. We've had some really good wins, some dominating wins,
- 32:14Speaker 6: and then we've had some knockdown dragouts where we've had
- 32:17Speaker 6: to really execute and do some things. So again, I
- 32:21Speaker 6: think more than anything, it gives you, gives them confidence
- 32:24Speaker 6: and certainly has given me some confidence in them.
- 32:28Speaker 1: All right, So now back to work, and they this
- 32:32Speaker 1: media availability was over at the practice facility a couple
- 32:34Speaker 1: of days ago, and I think it was our friend
- 32:38Speaker 1: Danny Davis from the Austin American Statesman. Not this was
- 32:41Speaker 1: a big photo of Jody Conrad from her time as
- 32:43Speaker 1: head coach, you know, looking down, kind of looking and
- 32:46Speaker 1: almost kind of looking straight at VIC as well. So
- 32:50Speaker 1: the question was did he purposely want to have pictures
- 32:52Speaker 1: of coach Conrad on the walls of the practice facility there?
- 33:00Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, Uh, that was something that I really
- 33:04Speaker 6: wanted in here. I have so much respect and admiration
- 33:07Speaker 6: for her, and uh it.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Just kind of worked out that way.
- 33:10Speaker 6: I never really noticed that, but uh, you know, love
- 33:14Speaker 6: having her around and and uh I love seeing her
- 33:18Speaker 6: after after games and uh, you know, again, when I
- 33:21Speaker 6: took this job, my vision was for her to come
- 33:24Speaker 6: in on uh in the morning after a game that
- 33:26Speaker 6: I forced it down and have coffee and rehash the
- 33:29Speaker 6: game and talk about it.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Uh again, I'm I'm uh.
- 33:34Speaker 6: I just have a lot of respect and admiration for
- 33:36Speaker 6: and and I love visiting with her, so it's always
- 33:40Speaker 6: been been great to see her and and visit with her.
- 33:43Speaker 6: So it's pretty cool.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Uh.
- 33:45Speaker 6: I think it's really cool to have her in the gym.
- 33:47Speaker 6: She's she deserves to be.
- 33:49Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:50Speaker 1: So, uh, with all of this heightened, uh, you know,
- 33:53Speaker 1: interest in women's basketball at Texas, question came up for Vic.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Does he believe there might be enough interest to have
- 33:59Speaker 1: a dumb in Austin? Oh?
- 34:02Speaker 6: I think so, you know, we don't cross paths, we're
- 34:05Speaker 6: a different time of the year, and because we don't
- 34:08Speaker 6: have a really other than.
- 34:10Speaker 2: The soccer team, we just don't have a pro team.
- 34:12Speaker 6: San Antonio is a different city, different place, our fifteen
- 34:16Speaker 6: from here, So I think there's I think there's a
- 34:21Speaker 6: a support group here that would love to have that team.
- 34:25Speaker 6: And I'm certainly you know, they've come and talked to
- 34:27Speaker 6: me about it. That group has talked to me, and
- 34:30Speaker 6: I'm I'm all for it.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Again. I don't feel like it.
- 34:33Speaker 6: Hurts us or hinders us one bit, and so I
- 34:37Speaker 6: hope they get it. I think it'd be great for
- 34:38Speaker 6: our city and great for our state, you know, to
- 34:41Speaker 6: have two great teams, have two teams in the league would.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Be wonderful, all right.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And then one other thing from Vic and this is
- 34:49Speaker 1: about Breonna Preston, his freshman guard who's been able to
- 34:54Speaker 1: spell Rory Harmon and has been able to give the
- 34:56Speaker 1: long run some quality minutes here and especially in the
- 34:59Speaker 1: second half half of the season. We're gonna hear from
- 35:01Speaker 1: Brie coming up in the next segment. But he was
- 35:03Speaker 1: asked about, uh, you know her. She's from Jonesborough, Georgia.
- 35:07Speaker 1: That's just off the south side of Atlanta. So how
- 35:10Speaker 1: did he discover Breed Preston.
- 35:13Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, we we spend so much time in
- 35:16Speaker 6: the summer on the road, and you know, we found
- 35:19Speaker 6: her in aau probably her sophomore year, you know, going
- 35:26Speaker 6: into her sophomore year, and.
- 35:30Speaker 2: She just you know, with her her.
- 35:33Speaker 6: Quickness or speed that that immediately gets your attention. But
- 35:38Speaker 6: then the more you watch her, the thing that impressed
- 35:40Speaker 6: me the most was that she's so good in the
- 35:44Speaker 6: open floor and y'all have seen this. She makes the
- 35:47Speaker 6: right pass to the right person at the right time.
- 35:51Speaker 2: She's really good at that. And I like to play up.
- 35:55Speaker 6: Tempo, I like to get up and down and uh,
- 35:58Speaker 6: you know, she's just really good at that like she's
- 36:02Speaker 6: she is so good at making that decision in the
- 36:05Speaker 6: open floor and that's hard to find. And so just
- 36:10Speaker 6: her demeanor her how hard she plays, how fast and
- 36:14Speaker 6: athletic and electric. I mean, the kid is electric. And
- 36:19Speaker 6: you know it was to me, it was an immediate fit,
- 36:23Speaker 6: you know, and then and then it was just fun
- 36:24Speaker 6: watching her grow mature.
- 36:28Speaker 2: And follower and then recruiter. And what I came to find.
- 36:31Speaker 6: Out is that I coached against her mother when I
- 36:33Speaker 6: was at Sam Houston State.
- 36:35Speaker 2: And she was at Southwest Texas.
- 36:37Speaker 6: I mean I remember her mother now at Southwest Texas.
- 36:40Speaker 6: She was a tough matchup, really good player, kind of
- 36:43Speaker 6: that tweener three four, that super athletic, like I remember
- 36:47Speaker 6: her like night and day, like I can remember her
- 36:50Speaker 6: specifically and in a scout and in our matchup issues
- 36:54Speaker 6: that we had.
- 36:55Speaker 2: So that was pretty cool too.
- 36:57Speaker 6: You know, it's uh, you don't run into that a lot.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I've run into it now a couple of times.
- 37:03Speaker 6: And I guess that comes with a little bit of seasoning.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Well, and Brie has really helped out this team as well,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and she'll continue to get better. We're going to hear
- 37:13Speaker 1: from Rihanna Preston, and we've got some other topics we'll
- 37:16Speaker 1: get to as we continue here on AM thirteen under
- 37:19Speaker 1: the Zone, a Thursday afternoon here on thirteen under the Zone,
- 37:24Speaker 1: we just heard from Texas women's head coach Pick Schaefer.
- 37:27Speaker 1: This is a big game the night against a Frank Kentucky.
- 37:30Speaker 1: They're at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington. Roger Wawliso joined Kathy
- 37:34Speaker 1: Arsham for the callig can here it on one to
- 37:36Speaker 1: three point one FM with a five to forty five
- 37:39Speaker 1: air time and a six o'clock tip.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Here on the Zone.
- 37:41Speaker 1: At six, we'll have Long Worn Weekly with Rodney Terry
- 37:45Speaker 1: with the long Worn men's head coach from Pluckers the
- 37:48Speaker 1: West Campus location. We do it live at six o'clock
- 37:50Speaker 1: on Thursday, So to see you out there for that.
- 37:52Speaker 1: And rolling it back to the women, we heard about
- 37:56Speaker 1: Brianna Preston and what.
- 37:57Speaker 2: She has started to do to really.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Supplement what they get from the guard spot from Rory
- 38:05Speaker 1: Harmon and Shay Holly, and of course Madison Booker swings
- 38:08Speaker 1: between guard and forward and UH and then Jordan Lee
- 38:11Speaker 1: as a freshman, is contriminded all of that. Some of
- 38:14Speaker 1: the parts is the reason why this team is number
- 38:15Speaker 1: three in the country and why they're twenty four and
- 38:18Speaker 1: two right now. And bre Preston is one of those
- 38:23Speaker 1: players who has really come a long way as a
- 38:25Speaker 1: true freshman. So there's a little media session. There were
- 38:27Speaker 1: some questions for the freshman Breonna Preston, just.
- 38:31Speaker 7: Learning how to run the team, not turn the ball
- 38:34Speaker 7: over and being.
- 38:36Speaker 8: A great teammate. Yeah, you learn from h It's a
- 38:42Speaker 8: lot of things.
- 38:45Speaker 7: The most important leading the team for sure, Yeah, and
- 38:52Speaker 7: just being the extension of the coach, like on the
- 38:54Speaker 7: court and stuff. So that's like my biggest takeaway so
- 38:57Speaker 7: far this season.
- 38:59Speaker 9: There's a season that's gone on showed a lot of
- 39:02Speaker 9: more for trusting you and Jordan and just letting you
- 39:04Speaker 9: guys play a lot of minutes when you were playing
- 39:06Speaker 9: half that fourth quart against How has that kind of
- 39:09Speaker 9: gone for you, kind of getting more minutes and you know,
- 39:13Speaker 9: gaining fixed trust to be out there and key situations.
- 39:16Speaker 7: It's very exciting, Like, I really love that he's trusting
- 39:20Speaker 7: me more.
- 39:22Speaker 8: I'm feeling confident.
- 39:23Speaker 7: That makes me more confident on the court to know
- 39:26Speaker 7: that he trusted me to lead the team, run the offense,
- 39:30Speaker 7: make plays, get the ball to the right people in
- 39:32Speaker 7: the right spots.
- 39:32Speaker 8: So that's definitely a confidence booster for me.
- 39:36Speaker 10: Kind of along those lines, I thought, I think it
- 39:38Speaker 10: was the was it the third quarter buzzer beater against Vanderbilt? Yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 10: I mean, but that play and the excitement that you
- 39:45Speaker 10: showed that that felt like I'm here.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Moment absolutely, you know, And is that fair to call it?
- 39:51Speaker 1: That?
- 39:51Speaker 8: Absolutely? For sure?
- 39:52Speaker 10: For so had you like, I don't know, those moments
- 39:56Speaker 10: are so weird. They could be relieved, like, hey, I
- 39:57Speaker 10: finally got something big to happen here.
- 39:59Speaker 2: I mean, how did you take Honestly.
- 40:01Speaker 8: I took you as a.
- 40:04Speaker 7: Moment like, Okay, we're finna put the smack down on
- 40:07Speaker 7: by after this.
- 40:09Speaker 8: But it was really just the energy play.
- 40:12Speaker 7: But I'm just naturally like that off the court, like
- 40:15Speaker 7: I have a lot of energy, and I just kind
- 40:18Speaker 7: of spread that to my teammates and you know, we're
- 40:22Speaker 7: just having a good time. It just reminds me to
- 40:24Speaker 7: just have fun out there. So it was kind of
- 40:26Speaker 7: like one of those moments.
- 40:28Speaker 2: You always just hyped that you always.
- 40:30Speaker 7: Always I am like that. It's just my personality. Honestly,
- 40:35Speaker 7: I've been like this since I was a little girl.
- 40:37Speaker 7: So just bringing it to college, just spreading that energy,
- 40:41Speaker 7: and I think it's really good for our teams.
- 40:44Speaker 2: You're saying, you and absolutely with each other the team.
- 40:51Speaker 8: It just starts in practice.
- 40:52Speaker 7: Honestly, even like when we're down or just don't have
- 40:56Speaker 7: no energy, the gym's quiet, Me and Jordan kind of
- 40:59Speaker 7: just get a start to get us some energy.
- 41:01Speaker 8: Because like.
- 41:03Speaker 7: That's really important when we get into these tough games. Uh,
- 41:06Speaker 7: we need that energy. We need that extra you know, mmm,
- 41:09Speaker 7: so we could win the game or do whatever we
- 41:11Speaker 7: need to do, get a stop, get a score, you know.
- 41:14Speaker 7: So that energy is really important. And j me and Jordan,
- 41:17Speaker 7: like we make sure we bring it every day.
- 41:19Speaker 10: Yeah, you talked about what you've learned so far about yourself.
- 41:22Speaker 10: What do you learned about this team?
- 41:25Speaker 7: I learned that like when we played together and we're
- 41:28Speaker 7: just you know, locked in with one another, like nobody
- 41:32Speaker 7: can be us, Like we're unstoppable. Like I honestly think
- 41:35Speaker 7: we're the best team in the country, like honestly, and
- 41:38Speaker 7: that and it proves that, like when we played against
- 41:40Speaker 7: South Carolina, how locked in we were, how in tune
- 41:43Speaker 7: we were with each other, the way we were sharing
- 41:46Speaker 7: the ball, I just think we were like really together.
- 41:49Speaker 8: So yeah, that togetherness is really something I take away.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, good luck for sure. It's just gonna falify.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Do do y'all talk about that? Do y'all say like
- 42:00Speaker 2: we really believe we're the best team in the.
- 42:01Speaker 8: Country absolutely all the time.
- 42:03Speaker 7: We practice like it, train like it, but we have
- 42:06Speaker 7: to believe it, you know, to make their dream come
- 42:09Speaker 7: true bring the Natty back here.
- 42:10Speaker 8: So yeah, we talk about it all the time.
- 42:14Speaker 2: That is that what a win? Like South Carolina dust real.
- 42:16Speaker 10: It's like you're a confident team, but it's okay to
- 42:19Speaker 10: tip into swagger a little bit, absolutely, and.
- 42:21Speaker 2: It's okay to play with that. Do you think you
- 42:23Speaker 2: guys maybe can start having some of that or showing
- 42:25Speaker 2: some of that more?
- 42:27Speaker 8: No, I think so.
- 42:28Speaker 7: I mean, I'd probably have to bring it out of
- 42:30Speaker 7: them a little bit. But because yeah, everybody's just so
- 42:35Speaker 7: locked in because you know, the game not over until
- 42:37Speaker 7: the clock hit zero in the fourth quarter, so we
- 42:40Speaker 7: just kind of try to stay locked in focused, get
- 42:43Speaker 7: the win, do a little celebrating afterwards. But I can
- 42:46Speaker 7: definitely try to see, if you know, I could bring
- 42:48Speaker 7: it out of some of my teammates A little bit
- 42:50Speaker 7: for sure.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Are trying to say some of your teammates are old.
- 42:54Speaker 7: No, they're not old, but we do call them the
- 42:58Speaker 7: soup dupes. That's like a super do for senior. It's
- 43:02Speaker 7: like Taylor or Shade fifty or six years But it's just.
- 43:05Speaker 8: A little joke.
- 43:06Speaker 7: But nah, yeah, now, but they moved great to be
- 43:13Speaker 7: that old. So I loved them.
- 43:17Speaker 2: From the city. Yeah, college down the road.
- 43:19Speaker 9: You know, what do you know about your mom's playing days?
- 43:21Speaker 7: And she showed me a lot of film, like when
- 43:26Speaker 7: she finally found her old clips.
- 43:28Speaker 8: She would pull it up and show.
- 43:29Speaker 7: Me and I just smile and just enjoy the moment
- 43:32Speaker 7: that we shared. She tell me how she was the
- 43:35Speaker 7: best in the state and this and that, and I'm like, okay,
- 43:38Speaker 7: so I see where I get it from, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 7: just and we laugh about it.
- 43:41Speaker 8: But she was really good, like really good.
- 43:44Speaker 7: She's probably thinks she could beat me now, but you know,
- 43:47Speaker 7: i'd have to tell.
- 43:48Speaker 8: Her now that that's not the case.
- 43:51Speaker 9: But yeah, right I did.
- 43:54Speaker 7: It was like surreal, like I I can't believe it, honestly.
- 44:02Speaker 8: I met her coach.
- 44:04Speaker 7: Some of the people she went to the school with there,
- 44:07Speaker 7: like some of them still worked there, and it was
- 44:09Speaker 7: just a great moment. I actually got to coach against
- 44:12Speaker 7: her team, like I was helping out one of the
- 44:14Speaker 7: other high schools, and it was just like a crazy moment.
- 44:17Speaker 7: And but I've been there a couple times and every
- 44:20Speaker 7: time I go it's just like, wow, my mom went here.
- 44:22Speaker 8: It's kind of cool feeling.
- 44:23Speaker 9: So yeah, so how did a Georgia girl get to Texas?
- 44:26Speaker 9: How did how did that whole thing kind of get
- 44:28Speaker 9: c come come to you?
- 44:29Speaker 2: Well?
- 44:30Speaker 7: I knew that I didn't wanna go too far from home,
- 44:33Speaker 7: but it's like this is also a home for me
- 44:36Speaker 7: cause my mom's from here, my uncle lives here, so
- 44:40Speaker 7: it's like, Okay, it's still home for me, so it's
- 44:42Speaker 7: not too far. But just from a athletic and academic standpoint,
- 44:47Speaker 7: Texas had everything that I needed, uh to set me
- 44:50Speaker 7: up for the next you know, forty years of my life.
- 44:52Speaker 7: So f academic standpoint, it was just it was great
- 44:56Speaker 7: athletic standpoint, great coach, great teammates, and so it was
- 45:02Speaker 7: just like really the perfect fait for me, honestly.
- 45:06Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 45:07Speaker 5: A couple days ago, Madison was saying, the big reason
- 45:09Speaker 5: she shows to come here is pick.
- 45:11Speaker 2: To play for one of the best coaches. She thinks.
- 45:13Speaker 2: I'm sure that's a big reason for you as well.
- 45:14Speaker 9: You have a big moment or like what stood out
- 45:17Speaker 9: to you about playing under coach Shaffer s so far
- 45:20Speaker 9: as your pressments.
- 45:21Speaker 7: I know that he wants to win, and I know
- 45:24Speaker 7: that I wanna win. He definitely loves players that plays hard,
- 45:30Speaker 7: and I feel like I play very hard. So that
- 45:33Speaker 7: kind of like made me instantly think, Okay, we have
- 45:37Speaker 7: the same mindset, you know, in a way, and I
- 45:40Speaker 7: know that he develops great players. We got WNBA players
- 45:44Speaker 7: like you know what I'm saying, And that's where I
- 45:46Speaker 7: wanna be. So I wanna go to the league make
- 45:49Speaker 7: an impact there. But I know that I had to choose.
- 45:51Speaker 8: A program that would get me there, and I feel
- 45:53Speaker 8: like Shaffer was the perfect fit for that.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Yeah, what did.
- 45:57Speaker 10: He What did he say to you after that Lake
- 45:59Speaker 10: Turner when you were trying to get at the book?
- 46:00Speaker 2: What did you say.
- 46:03Speaker 8: As soon as the ball came out of my hands?
- 46:05Speaker 8: I was like saying it, but I.
- 46:08Speaker 7: Was like, I gotta just get back on defense, like
- 46:12Speaker 7: get back, get a stop.
- 46:14Speaker 8: And the ball end up going out of bounds. But
- 46:16Speaker 8: I was like yeah, I know I'm.
- 46:17Speaker 7: Coming out for that one, but I was like, I'm
- 46:19Speaker 7: not gonna beat myself up about it, because you know,
- 46:22Speaker 7: the game's full of mistakes.
- 46:23Speaker 8: You just gotta have that mindset to be able to
- 46:25Speaker 8: move on to the next play.
- 46:27Speaker 2: So yeah, being able to play.
- 46:30Speaker 6: South Carolina, being able to play all these big times
- 46:32Speaker 6: schools to hurting your career, what does that do for
- 46:35Speaker 6: your golfense? Knowing that you're on the court, not just
- 46:38Speaker 6: in garbage town, but you're in.
- 46:39Speaker 8: Court during crunch.
- 46:40Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a great experience, honestly for me being a
- 46:44Speaker 7: freshman and coach having that much, you know, faith and
- 46:47Speaker 7: trust in me to go out there and run the team,
- 46:50Speaker 7: run the offense, not turn the ball over.
- 46:52Speaker 8: Like honestly, I feel.
- 46:54Speaker 7: Like I'm kind of made for moments like that because
- 46:57Speaker 7: I've played against the Tenaya lasts, all them in high
- 47:01Speaker 7: school because you know, they're like kind of from the
- 47:03Speaker 7: East Side, so I kind of got a taste of
- 47:06Speaker 7: them early, so that when I got to college, you know,
- 47:10Speaker 7: I kind of know their game.
- 47:11Speaker 8: I'm familiar.
- 47:11Speaker 7: I'm not scared of the moment, so it's like, Okay,
- 47:15Speaker 7: I just gotta go out there.
- 47:16Speaker 8: And be me. And for the broader standpoint where you
- 47:19Speaker 8: think those experiences done for the team. Great.
- 47:24Speaker 7: Honestly, we just we're yelling really well together. Uh, we're
- 47:29Speaker 7: playing great. We're playing for each other and that's like
- 47:33Speaker 7: really important for us to go out there and play
- 47:35Speaker 7: hard for one another. Get dive on the floor for
- 47:38Speaker 7: that one. But for of all, you know what I'm saying,
- 47:39Speaker 7: Like it's just great cause like that positivity within our
- 47:43Speaker 7: team like very much needed and for us to like
- 47:46Speaker 7: continue to bring that just great for us down the road.
- 47:49Speaker 2: So yeah, anything on Kentucky your early on.
- 47:52Speaker 8: Grabs you Georgia aymore.
- 47:56Speaker 7: Yeah, we gotta make sure, I know, we got film
- 47:59Speaker 7: and practice and stuff like that today. So going to
- 48:02Speaker 7: really like lock in on film and make sure we
- 48:06Speaker 7: execute in practice today.
- 48:07Speaker 2: So yeah, what's.
- 48:08Speaker 10: The what I'm curious, what's been the mood in the
- 48:10Speaker 10: room of you know, y'all are getting his wins or
- 48:12Speaker 10: on the street. But I don't hear anybody talking about
- 48:16Speaker 10: anything bigger, like the bigger Everyone's focused in the moment.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Yeah, what's the key to that?
- 48:22Speaker 7: Just taking one game at a time, don't get too
- 48:25Speaker 7: far ahead.
- 48:26Speaker 8: We need to be disciplined.
- 48:28Speaker 7: Don't think because it's not guaranteed. You know, we could
- 48:32Speaker 7: lose in the future, but you know, of course that's
- 48:35Speaker 7: not what.
- 48:35Speaker 8: We're up about going for. But yeah, definitely.
- 48:39Speaker 7: Just taking it one game at a time, being patient,
- 48:41Speaker 7: focusing on scout for one team, a couple of players, like, yeah,
- 48:47Speaker 7: we're Dowdan, like in the moment, we're not looking.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Too far ahead.
- 48:51Speaker 9: Yeah, there a player you like to model your game after.
- 48:55Speaker 9: A certain who who do you grow up liking? Is
- 48:57Speaker 9: your favorite players?
- 48:59Speaker 7: Me?
- 49:00Speaker 8: Oh, that's a good question.
- 49:03Speaker 7: I kind of like, uh Courtney Williams. Like she's fast,
- 49:08Speaker 7: she got the mid range, pull up game, good point guard.
- 49:12Speaker 8: So I kind of watch her a little bit.
- 49:17Speaker 7: That a I'm I'm be real, I don't wanna you know,
- 49:20Speaker 7: and ride on nobody but to all your last and like,
- 49:22Speaker 7: I really enjoy her game, Like she's just so athletic,
- 49:26Speaker 7: such a great player, three level score.
- 49:29Speaker 8: I definitely trained with her with Pitts.
- 49:33Speaker 7: Uh that's a trainer out in Georgia, and we kind
- 49:35Speaker 7: of both trained with him, and you know, it's great
- 49:38Speaker 7: to go against her a lot, just kind of see
- 49:41Speaker 7: where I'm at and.
- 49:42Speaker 8: See where I can compete with the best of the best.
- 49:44Speaker 5: Uh.
- 49:44Speaker 8: So it's a great experience. I kind of like her game.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's hard not to compare your glory too when
- 49:51Speaker 1: you see how fast you or how hard are you?
- 49:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how.
- 49:54Speaker 8: Great of a pastor you are. What's it been like.
- 49:55Speaker 3: To play with her, watch her grow?
- 49:57Speaker 2: How has that help there a game?
- 50:00Speaker 7: Definitely just from a point guard standpoint, she's a great
- 50:05Speaker 7: point guard. Like I can learn a lot from her,
- 50:08Speaker 7: especially how to run a team at such a high level,
- 50:13Speaker 7: knowing that we just came into a new conference, like
- 50:15Speaker 7: everything's different. It's not the Big Twelve, Like everything's different,
- 50:19Speaker 7: you know. And then her poise to stay under control
- 50:23Speaker 7: and lead the team through all the pressure. It's really
- 50:26Speaker 7: great to know that we have a you know, a
- 50:29Speaker 7: point guard that's not like, oh my god, I'm scared
- 50:32Speaker 7: or you know like that, she take charge and just
- 50:35Speaker 7: and we followed. And then I'm just taking notes after
- 50:38Speaker 7: that so that when I'm in the game or you know,
- 50:40Speaker 7: when she graduates, then I can step in.
- 50:43Speaker 8: And take that roll in as well.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Pretty heavy stuff from a mere freshman, and Brianna Preston
- 50:49Speaker 1: is one of those who players who can definitely lead
- 50:52Speaker 1: Taxes into the future and the President's pretty good right
- 50:55Speaker 1: now for this team number three in the country, but
- 50:57Speaker 1: they will be pushed tonight. This is gonna be the
- 51:00Speaker 1: test from Kentucky. And since I'll be headed over to
- 51:06Speaker 1: Pluckers to do Rodney Show, to do long run weekly
- 51:09Speaker 1: with Rodney Tarry at six o'clock, I'm going to insist
- 51:11Speaker 1: that they put the telecast up on one of the
- 51:14Speaker 1: screens there so we can follow what's going on with
- 51:17Speaker 1: Texas and Kentucky. Big game tonight and then ostensibly an
- 51:23Speaker 1: even bigger one on Sunday with fifth ranked LSU come
- 51:26Speaker 1: in to town. But first Kentucky tonight. We got more
- 51:28Speaker 1: coming up as we continue on AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Back to the Craig Way Show.
- 51:38Speaker 5: Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
- 51:40Speaker 5: Texas to eight one five three zero, followed by your message.
- 51:44Speaker 5: Standard message and data rates may apply.
- 51:51Speaker 2: If you listen closely, you might be able to hear.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Cameron Parker getting choked up at the announcement that the
- 52:02Speaker 1: Jets and Aaron Rodgers have come to a party of
- 52:05Speaker 1: the ways. I speak with tongue firmly planted in cheek,
- 52:09Speaker 1: because is there anybody in the NFL you dislike more
- 52:14Speaker 1: than Aaron Rodgers.
- 52:17Speaker 3: I don't really dislike him that much anymore. Really, yeah,
- 52:20Speaker 3: I mean, well he's past his prime, so it's you know,
- 52:23Speaker 3: now you're really worried about him contending or winning a
- 52:26Speaker 3: Super Bowl. I find his his you know, his comments
- 52:29Speaker 3: more annoying. I think he probably the most talented quarterback
- 52:31Speaker 3: of all time, but I think off the field and
- 52:35Speaker 3: his antics and blaming the front office and kind of
- 52:38Speaker 3: trying to take over things just rubs me the wrong way.
- 52:41Speaker 2: That's why I asked that.
- 52:45Speaker 1: The Jets made it official today news release that included
- 52:50Speaker 1: statements of gratitude from team officials. Jets didn't give a
- 52:53Speaker 1: reason for the decision, saying only they met last week
- 52:55Speaker 1: with Rogers, and that quote shared that our intention was
- 53:00Speaker 1: to move in a different direction at quarterback. That was
- 53:04Speaker 1: a joint statement from the GM, Darren Moogie, and also
- 53:08Speaker 1: from Aaron Glenn, the new head coach. I don't know,
- 53:14Speaker 1: you know, I don't know if Aaron Rodgers was completely
- 53:18Speaker 1: ready to move on, but it sounds like the Jets
- 53:21Speaker 1: were definitely ready to move forward, that they needed something.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Else, and.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Despite your advice, Kellen Moore did take the head coaching
- 53:33Speaker 1: job with the New Orleans Saints. You thought he would
- 53:36Speaker 1: have been better suited to stick with Philly as the
- 53:37Speaker 1: offensive coordinator. He took the job. Introductory news conference today,
- 53:44Speaker 1: wasn't exactly completely committed to Derek Carr's quarterback.
- 53:49Speaker 2: I wouldn't want to be either.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Here's a quote from him. Derek's a tremendous quarterback in
- 53:59Speaker 1: this league. I've had so much respect for him the
- 54:02Speaker 1: journey he's been on. He's a starter in this league.
- 54:06Speaker 1: He's a premier player in this league. Really excited to
- 54:09Speaker 1: team up with him and go through this process. And so,
- 54:12Speaker 1: just like any player on this roster, i just got
- 54:15Speaker 1: here a few days ago, and I'm excited to go
- 54:16Speaker 1: through this journey with all of them.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:21Speaker 1: So he didn't exactly say he's definitely the quarterback, but
- 54:25Speaker 1: he's excited to go through.
- 54:28Speaker 2: The process.
- 54:30Speaker 1: He was asked if the team had to make a
- 54:34Speaker 1: decision about the quarterback spot, and he again referred to
- 54:39Speaker 1: Carr being a tremendous starting quarterback in this league. We're
- 54:43Speaker 1: fortunate to have him, and we're excited to go through
- 54:45Speaker 1: this process as we build this roster together. Again, I'm
- 54:50Speaker 1: meeting these guys for the first time the last few days.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Really excited to meet more of them. This will be
- 54:55Speaker 1: a lot of fun. I said, he hasn't met most
- 54:58Speaker 1: of the players and staff members after officially accepting the
- 55:01Speaker 1: job this week. And so eight thirty six and youngest
- 55:08Speaker 1: coach in the NFL now, so he's he's moving into
- 55:15Speaker 1: a spot that's and this I think speaks to your
- 55:18Speaker 1: point when you were saying he would have been better
- 55:21Speaker 1: suited to stick with the Eagles because the Saints roster
- 55:25Speaker 1: and their salary commitments for twenty twenty five aren't exactly
- 55:28Speaker 1: the envy of the league right now.
- 55:31Speaker 2: They have issues.
- 55:34Speaker 1: They expect to be significantly over the salary cap this year.
- 55:40Speaker 1: The cap number hasn't been set yet, but they still
- 55:43Speaker 1: figure to be over it. They have to be cap
- 55:45Speaker 1: compliant by the startup free agency on March twelfth, which
- 55:49Speaker 1: includes cars salary cap figure of fifty one and a
- 55:55Speaker 1: half million dollars. So got feeling they might be looking
- 56:02Speaker 1: elsewhere on that.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, here's the big issue with the salary cap and
- 56:06Speaker 3: the roster, Craig. The Saints have six players over the
- 56:08Speaker 3: age of thirty years old who represent a huge chunk
- 56:12Speaker 3: of their salary cap. You got Tomorrow Davis linebacker thirty five,
- 56:16Speaker 3: Defensive end Cameron Jordan thirty five years old, Taysom Hill
- 56:19Speaker 3: tight end slash, quarterback, slash, running back, slash, whatever, thirty four,
- 56:23Speaker 3: Derek Carr who's thirty three, Tyron Matthew Honey Badger thirty
- 56:26Speaker 3: two years old, and then right tackle Ryan Ramschek thirty
- 56:29Speaker 3: years old. So those six players currently going into next
- 56:34Speaker 3: season twenty twenty five represent one hundred and forty million
- 56:38Speaker 3: dollars a salary cap. That's almost forty five forty percent
- 56:42Speaker 3: of the cap that is predicted for twenty twenty five.
- 56:44Speaker 3: I don't think we know the cap number yet for
- 56:46Speaker 3: twenty twenty five and been said yet, but let's just
- 56:49Speaker 3: say it's two hundred and seventy five million dollars. Okay,
- 56:53Speaker 3: This year was two fifty five, and right now it's
- 56:56Speaker 3: been kind of jumping up like twenty million dollars per
- 57:00Speaker 3: per year to seventy five. They're gonna be over sixty
- 57:04Speaker 3: five million dollars over the cap. And then that doesn't
- 57:06Speaker 3: include like you know, like the the dead Heads. They're
- 57:09Speaker 3: taken on from Michael Thomas and Jameis Winston and Chase Young,
- 57:13Speaker 3: Juwan Johnson all these other guys. So, you know, the
- 57:16Speaker 3: Saints kind of bet big on you know, re signing
- 57:20Speaker 3: in these free agency moves, but they're all on guys
- 57:23Speaker 3: who are old.
- 57:25Speaker 2: You want to get young, you know.
- 57:27Speaker 3: I mean look at how like the Chiefs and the
- 57:30Speaker 3: Eagles and the Bills, you know, the last couple of years,
- 57:34Speaker 3: they've gone pretty young.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Yeah, you still have.
- 57:35Speaker 3: Some you know, old heads if like you know, Travis
- 57:37Speaker 3: Kelcey on the roster. But Bill's defense, I mean they
- 57:40Speaker 3: got rid of all the old their older player except
- 57:43Speaker 3: for Von Miller. And you know, the Eagles their entire
- 57:45Speaker 3: defensive line basically you know, second and third and fourth
- 57:49Speaker 3: year guys.
- 57:49Speaker 2: So it's a tough spot to be in for Kellen Moore.
- 57:53Speaker 3: They're not gonna have a lot of flexibility for the
- 57:55Speaker 3: next two years.
- 57:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's why I said, not the NBA, the league. There.
- 58:00Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back to wrap up our number
- 58:02Speaker 1: two on a thirteen under the Zone. We are with
- 58:04Speaker 1: you up until five o'clock, and then of course at
- 58:08Speaker 1: five o'clock if you know, Enrich and at six o'clock
- 58:10Speaker 1: Longhorn Weekly with Roddy Terry coming your way. Hey, you're
- 58:16Speaker 1: a big golf of fishient Auto. How much do you
- 58:20Speaker 1: pay attention to the LPGA?
- 58:24Speaker 3: Not as much as I should probably, I mean, I
- 58:27Speaker 3: keep up with a lot of the ut offers that
- 58:29Speaker 3: are out there. And then of course, you know Eli
- 58:31Speaker 3: Corda had such a fun season last season, or such
- 58:34Speaker 3: a fun start, so but you know, not as much
- 58:37Speaker 3: as the PGA Tour, okay.
- 58:39Speaker 2: More than the Live Golf Tour.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Did you hear about this pace of play policy thing
- 58:43Speaker 1: they've come out with to the incredible Listen to this, folks,
- 58:46Speaker 1: and as I read this to you, I want you to.
- 58:52Speaker 2: Tell me or at least think about it.
- 58:54Speaker 1: Just just think about if you could envision this on
- 58:57Speaker 1: the men's tour. They the l LPGA announced a new
- 59:03Speaker 1: pace of play policy today. It includes lower timing thresholds
- 59:10Speaker 1: for fines and penalties, and a new one stroke penalty
- 59:13Speaker 1: for golfers who take too long to hit the shot.
- 59:16Speaker 1: So it's designed to speed up lake. Obviously, it's going
- 59:20Speaker 1: to go into effect starting at the end of March
- 59:22Speaker 1: at the Ford Championship. It will also be enforced on
- 59:26Speaker 1: the EPSOM Tour starting at the IOA Championship April twenty five.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Is that's like the corn Ferry Tour or something like
- 59:33Speaker 1: that for the women. Okay, so here's how this deal works.
- 59:38Speaker 1: It's a new policy that calls for a fine for
- 59:42Speaker 1: any golfer who is one to five seconds over there
- 59:46Speaker 1: allotted time on the whole. It also calls for a
- 59:50Speaker 1: one stroke penalty for those who are six to fifteen
- 59:53Speaker 1: seconds over and a two stroke penalty for those sixteen seconds. Previously,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the LPGA had fined golfers who were one to ten
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: to seconds over the alloted time, and he assessed the
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: two stroke penalty to those who were more than eleven
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: seconds over. Vicky gets Ackerman said in the statement, this
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: new policy, which was player led and developed through an
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: established pace of play committee, was created and what we
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: believe is the best interest of our brand fans in
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: the OVERALLLPGA watching experience. Based on a data backed approach
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: and a direct player input, this policy now acts as
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: a stronger deterrent, ensuring players take warning seriously before penalties
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: become necessary. So they were informed last week about this,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: The LPGA said. Golfer's hitting first on par fours and
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: par fives no longer will receive an additional ten seconds,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: except on reachable par fours, golfer's hitting first on par threes,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: approach shots and putts will still receive an additional ten seconds. Players,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: for example, get one hundred twenty seconds to play a
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: hole requires them to take four strokes. Golfers will still
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: be warned and timed before finds and stroke penalties are levied,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: and the tour said that the finds incurred due to
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: the accumulation of plus times and excessive shot timing will
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: double each consecutive year a player violates the policy. Nellie Corda,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: who you mentioned, said Quota, I'm very excited about it.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I think that's one of the things that I've just
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: noticed over my time on tours that we used to
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: go from five hours to under five hours. Now it's
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: just five and a half typically our rounds. So my
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: question is this, if the players are on board with this,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: if the player input that the LPGA says is in
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: there to speed up play, who's causing the problem the players?
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: But the players say they're all for being punitive about
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: this to fix the problem. So yeah, I'm all for it.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Panalyze them?
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: What me?
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: So, I mean, are some of the ones who are
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: the offenders? Are they do they have the input on
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: this deal or they are you know.
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: And.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: I don't watch enough LPGA to get a good read
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: on this, but do they look inordinately slow to you
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: when they play?
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: Well, they're just as slow as the guys. I mean,
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: the guys are taking five and a half hours now
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: nether quarters. She's notoriously a fast player. You need more
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: more like that. No one, no one has the time
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: to sit around and watch a five and a half
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: hour round. So just like the MLB has initiated the
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: pitch clock and that has sped up games. I mean,
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: we had games last year that were what just over
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: two hours? Now, we're not gonna have two hour golf rounds.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: But there needs to be some sort of finalization on
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: the on the PGA Tour, even Live Golf Tour, any
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: any type of tour, any type of golf tour that
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: if you're taking over a minute to hit a shot, ridiculous.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: It should be forty five seconds.
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: Now.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: Of course, you know, if you're playing in the pouring
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: rain and there's other fact, understand it. But if you're
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: in the fairway, grip it and rip it, let's go.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: We do not have time for five and a half hours.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: So I'm I'm hoping that this with the LPGA Tour
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: doing this, the PGA Tour and the players will see
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: this because Colin morri Ka talked about it this week
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: that yeah, they need to follow suit with the LPGA
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: Tour's doing. So hopefully it works out and there's a
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: lot of good feedback from it and a lot of good
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: data from it that actually it is benefiting. And if
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: you know, if people are players are complaining about it
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: sucks for you, you got to adapt. You know, It's
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: it's not like an MLB where oh, are the injuries
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: going to go up? You're not gonna get injured more
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: for for hit and quicker. You're gonna it's gonna be
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: a better product. And that's what people should that's what
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: golfers should recommend. It's a better TV product for the fans.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: And you know, you're well aware of as many golf
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: fans are who the slow players are.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: In golf, Tom Kim, look at you, Yeah, yeah, some
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: guys are really slow.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Hey, we're gonna break a little bit early here because
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: we're gonna visit with g Watson from the Chicago White
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Sox front office. He is out at spring training with
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: the White Sox in the Greater Phoenix, Arizona area. And
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: there's a lot happening on the baseball front. In case
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: you didn't hear it, Alex Bregman has signed a free
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: agent deal with the Red Sox three year, one hundred
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: and twenty million dollar deal, And so Bregman was the
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: biggest free agent remaining on the market, and he's expected
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: to play second base for Boston after primarily playing third
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: base for the Astros.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: So think about this.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: The Red Sox, who were looked as being one of
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: the cheaper run franchises of late, they picked up Garrett
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Crochet from the White Sox in the trade. They signed
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Walker Buehler, They signed a role as Chapman. I don't
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: know how much gas Chapman has left in the tang
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: but at least they made some moves there. So we're
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: seeing slowly but surely the dismantling of those Astros. Teams
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: have won seventh straight to ALCS or appeared in seventh
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: straight ALCS series.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: All right, coming up, will visit with Gene Watson, and.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: We'll also continue to take a closer look at this
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: matchup tonight between Texas and Kentucky on the women's side.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Important match up there. We've got some other topics that
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: we'll get to as well. So we're glad to have
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: you with us here on this Thursday afternoon. Again a
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: reminder Long Horn Weekly with Rodney Terry coming your way
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: tonight at six o'clock at Pluckers twenty two to twenty
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: two Rio Grand that's the West Campus location that's coming
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: up at six o'clock right here on AM thirteen hundred,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: the zone and where there's Major League Baseball activity. There's
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office who
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: is joining us from sunny Arizona.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: How you doing.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: I guess you're pumped up now that you know you're
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: you're in a spring training site and workouts are already
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: underway right.
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: It's it's been great and the most amazing part of
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: it is how fast the off season went. I don't
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: ever remember an off season going as fast as this
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: one did.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: But it's good to be out here.
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: We got college games coming in this weekend and we're
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: rocking and rolling.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: What would you let let's start with your ball club,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: because when you went in there last year, you had
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: said right from the start, everybody knew that with the
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: White Sox it was going to be a rebuild.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: But you've been there before.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: You've had your sleeves rolled up in the past with
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: the Royals, with the Marlins, with the Padres. You've been there,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: You've done that. You know how this whole thing works. Uh.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: And you said last year that you felt better about
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: where this White Sox group was starting from than even
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: Kansas City, which ultimately built into a world champion. Now
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: that guys are reporting and you're getting into the workouts
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: and you've gone through this very fast, as you pointed
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: out off season, give everybody a little status report on
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: your ball club and the building process that is ongoing.
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: Yes, it's it's been great, And I would say that
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: a year ago, you know, we felt like, of the
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: three rebuilds, I've been a part of that from day one,
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: this one was a little bit ahead of the other three.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: And a year later, we feel even better about it.
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: And everybody focuses so much on the wins and losses
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: at the major league level that they don't really understand
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: everything that's going on under the hood. When you're talking
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: about infrastructure and building out your scouting staffs and your
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: research and development and just getting the people on and
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: off the bus that you want to be a part
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: of the organization moving forward. And so you know, we
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: sit here a year later, super excited about you know
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: what we did in the draft with guys like Hagen
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: Smith and Caleb Bonnemer and and then you know, a
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: year ago we had Garrett Crochet in our bullpen and
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: he ended up being one of the best starting pitchers
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: in Major League Baseball, which turned into Kyle Till and
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: Braden Montgomery and Chase Meadroth and we coming Gonzales. And
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: so there's six players right there in a calendar year
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: that are impactful type players that were super excited about
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: moving forward.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: How would you characterize or describe what you and the
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: rest of the front office had to do in terms
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: of getting the people you wanted in your system. And
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: I'm talking about the players, I'm talking about the evaluators
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: of scouts, all the people that you knew were winners
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: and guys you wanted to be a part of it,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: and that the rest of the front office wanted the
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: troops on the ground to try to make this happen.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Was this was it larger on a larger scale than
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: say when you were with Kansas City or Florida or
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: anybody else in the past, in terms of getting the
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: personnel you wanted for evaluation and coaching and development.
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: I think that every great leader and individuals that get
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: general managers jobs have kind of in their mind's eye
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: the people that they want to bring on board, you know,
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: should they ever get the job. And Chris was no exception.
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: He's done such a great job of, you know, knowing
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: who he wanted. He went and got Brian Banister, the
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: top pitching infrastructure person in the game. He went and
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: got a Josh Barfield from the Arizona Diamondbacks, one of
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: the brightest young executives in the game, who's from the
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: Houston area. Paul Yannish, just a tremendous baseball mind, was
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: at Rice University, and then myself and Gen Wong came
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: over from the Kansas City Royals, And so, you know,
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: you kind of always in your minds, I have an
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: idea of who you want to bring on the bus
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: with you, and it's really I literally sent my wife
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: a text thirty minutes ago saying, I've never enjoyed working
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: with a group like I'm enjoying working with this one
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: right now.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: Visiting with Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox. Spring
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: training is underway. Okay, I want to get to a
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: couple of items. You warned is not the right word.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: You advised us to keep an eye on some other
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: free agent things that might happen on the back end
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: of the winter heading in to spring training. You mentioned
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: that when we last spoke about three weeks ago, and
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: lo and behold, Alex Bregman signs with the Red Sox
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: a three year, one hundred and twenty million dollars deal
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: forty million annual salary, more than ten million per year
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: than other teams were offering.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: According to sources in.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: That the present day value of the contract or around
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: ninety million for the three years. So there's deferrals involved
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: in that. How about your thoughts first of all on that,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: and then I want to get your larger perspective on
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: deferrals and deferred money, because I know some folks don't
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: understand completely. All they think is deferred money is they're
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: going to write you one gigantic check at the end
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: of the contract, and it's not quite like that. I
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: want to give you a chance to explain that. But
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: but first of all, your thoughts on the Bregman side
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: with the Red.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: Sox, well, number one, I think it's a tremendous sign
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: for the Red Sox. I don't think a player embodies,
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: you know, that fan ma as much as Alex Bregman,
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: the need that they had for the position, although they
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: have some super talented prospects coming, but he just embodies
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: the blue collar, you know, kind of the Dustin Pedroia,
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: you know, makeup. And he'd had so much success hitting
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: in that ballpark over his career on the road that
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: that for me, if you weren't going to be in Houston,
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: that was absolutely the perfect fit for him. Although I
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: thought Chicago thought the Cubs would be involved Detroit the ballpark,
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: even though his relationship with Agent Strong, I never felt
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: like that ballpark was going to be in play for him.
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: But just a tremendous job by the Red Sox to
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: continue to push to catch the Yankees. And they've got
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: a very nice ball club, and something tells me they're
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: still not done. But a great fit for him. From
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: the standpoint of the Astros, you know, at some point,
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: you know, the rebuild begins and what they've been able
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: to do the last eight years is absolutely phenomenal. And
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: and when you start losing guys like Kyle Tucker uh
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: and other core pieces of the cores that took you
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: on that run, sometimes Uh, it's it's better not to
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: go down the road of a long term, five to
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: six year deal, uh and just save that money for
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: later when you're ready to win again.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: But certainly a super fit for Alex and uh and
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: the Red Sox. Yeah.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: It's also interesting too, Gino that all the reports to
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: they say that Regman's probably gonna play second.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Base in Boston. Uh.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Jose Altuve Uh that uh was then quoted as saying
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: that he would be willing to move to left field
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: if if that need comes right now. We see when
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: players get long in the tooth and they've been around long,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: long time. I mean he goes back even in the
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: days and you know Yogi Barro moving to the outfield,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Mickey Mantle moving the first base, that kind of thing. Uh,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: that that kind of adds a little more time on
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: the back end the career thing. Are we looking at
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: getting toward that side of it? With al two Vasin's
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: He's he has openly offered if need be, He says,
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: if it helps the ball club to be to move
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: into even in the left field.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: Well, one, I think players today view themselves as more versatile.
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: I think that the benz Obrasus and the Chris Taylors
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: of the world have kind of creating the open mindset
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: for players to try to, you know, open the door
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: to playing longer because I'm moving to a different position
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: that might might be, you know, not as hard as
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: on my body, and left field in Houston is certainly.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: It's not a taxing position.
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: But second to that, I think that Jose may be
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: looking at like, Okay, this is the fit we have
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: with the players we have, and my offense is going
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: to be better if we get these guys on the field.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: My body's going to be in better shape.
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: And so I think now more than ever, players are
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: more open to move around the diamond than they've ever been.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: All Right, you know, let me get a little in
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: depth from you on deferment and deferred money and how
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: this really works out, because a lot of people say, well,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: you know Otani signed, he got all that money on
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: the back end of.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: The d L. That's just how it rolled.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: And they looked at the Sasaki deal the same way,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: but that it's a completely different deal with Sasaki because
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: he actually turned down more money from the Giants and
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: a couple other ball clubs to sign with LA. And
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: I use LA as an example simply because they were
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: very busy clearly in the offseason. Then there is deferred
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: money involved, but there's there's levels of it, isn't there
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: in how the money gets deferred in percentages and and
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: actual dollars that are accrued by guys.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and this is probably the biggest lightning rod in
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: baseball right now because teams that are up against the
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: competitive balance tax and the luxuryes threshold are now finding
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: a loophole. They're getting players that want to be there
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: and finding the loophole that allows them to just push
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: the money back and that money account against the payrolls
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: and the luxury taxes.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: In later years, this is probably going to be one
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: of the.
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: Bigger CBA issues when the Collective Bargain Agreement comes up
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: at the end of twenty twenty six. There's a lot
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: of rumors about a floor, a luxury floor as well
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: as a ceiling, but this is the one where you
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: know when you've got a superpower like some of these
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: teams are, and they can just keep signing players because
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: they referring the money, that kind of creates a non
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: competitive balance in the playing field. And so I think
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: it's something that's certainly going to be addressed as the
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: CBA comes up. I'm not sure how you put the
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: hay back in the barn, but there's something they're going
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: to have to address it well.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: And here's another example of it, and wanting to get
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: your thoughts on this. The Padres have been kind of
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: quiet in the off season, but they sign Nick Pavetta,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: which I thought was a good deal for them, a
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: four year, fifty five million dollar deal and has opt
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: outs after the second and third seasons and is backloaded.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: The contract's going to pay him three million dollars as
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: a signing bonus, but only one million dollars is a
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: salary for this coming season, and then it has salaries
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: of nineteen million, fourteen million, and eighteen million from twenty
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: twenty six to twenty twenty eight. So and it's a
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: structure that's trying to help the Podras keep costs down
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: for a second straight off season, their payroll this year
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: is running about one hundred and ninety four million. It's
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: a thirty million dollar increase. But they did sign a good,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: a good veteran right hander in Paveta. How about your
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: thoughts on that, and again speaking to the point of
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: what you were just laying out there with regard to
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: deferred money.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: Well, and I think that's a tremendous sign for them.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: And truthfully, I mean, the San Diego felt like they
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: were right there.
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: They didn't feel like that there was that big of
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: a gap between them and the Dodgers, and they've've added
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: to their rotation. But the second to that on the
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: players half is like at the backside of the career.
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: You know, these guys don't know where they're going to
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: live when their careers are on the end or on
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: the backside, and they go to state where there's no
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: state income facts and the and the AAV is even
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: higher for them personally. And so I think it's it's
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: a win win for the teams and for the players
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: when they can do that.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: But I do feel like the players are.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: Saying, this is where I want to play, and whatever
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: we have to do to make this happen is what
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: we're going to do to make it.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: Happen, Hey, before I let you go, and you know,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: we always have to get your thoughts on the Rangers
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: and they bring in the old reliable Jack Peterson uh
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: in and for them, how about the the.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Deal to bring in Jack Peterson in?
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: And where you feel the Rangers are is they get
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: ready to get things going in surprise.
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: Well exciting for Ranger fans. I think this is a
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: sneaky ball club. They they've been and you know how
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: Bochy is with the every other year, and they have
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: quietly been doing things of very good this offseason.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: They've got some young pitching on the way.
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: They've got a very core of very solid core position
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: players that.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: Are that are driven to do well. I would look
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: for them.
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: At some point to maybe, you know, make a couple
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: of moves over the season to improve the club and
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: maybe relieve themselves of some financial uh stability.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: But but this is a sneaky club for twenty twenty five.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: It's gonna be fun to watch. Hey.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: One final thing, I know you're you're you're tight obviously
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: with Angels general manager Perryman II. And then uh top
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: blow for them with Anthony Rendon. I know, you know,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: Rendon very very well is got to have that hip
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: surgery and miss a significant amount of time.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: They they did sign Kenley Jansen. But how about your
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: your thoughts and where the Angels are at the moment.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: Well, one, Perry will be buying me dinner tonight.
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: That's number one too, is you know, it's it's unfortunate.
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: It's unfortunate when you you know, because Anthony was there
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: before you know, we got there when Perry got the job.
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: And it's unfortunate when you have that type of star
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: player uh on your roster that you just never get
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: to see the ceiling of it reach its its peak.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: And it's certainly unfortunate.
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: And you know, I know Anthony's not not feeling great
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: about it, but you know, they'll move forward.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: They've done a great job of.
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: Additions, and they've got some young players in Zach Geno
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: and Logo Hoppey, and they've got some core players that
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: are going to be fine.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: They got young pitching and they'll be exciting to watch
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: this year as well. He's Gene Watson.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: He is our MLB inside it from the Chicago White
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Sox front office, and we're going to crank it up again.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Visiting with Gino throughout spring training and on into the
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: regular season. Hey, I appreciate it. Glad that baseball back
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: my friend, and look forward to visit.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: With you next week. Okay, you guys, take care. All right.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: That's Gene Watson and we've got more coming up. Stay
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: with us here on a thirteen hundred the Zone.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: Roll it on to a Thursday afternoon.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: A couple other baseball notes you wanted to get to
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: on the heels of our conversation there just a few
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: minutes ago with Johnson. That Anthony Rendon thing. That's significant
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: for the Angels, and in fact, that's the word they're
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: using to describe how long he'll be out. They're calling
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: it a significant amount of time. And you heard Gene
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: talk about that. It's a really tough blow for them.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: He's signed a seven year, two hundred and forty five
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: million dollar contract during the pandemic abbreviated season back in
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: twenty twenty, but he hasn't played more than fifty eight
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: games than any season since. He had a ten to
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: ten ops with thirty four homers and one hundred and
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: twenty six RBIs with the Washington Nationals. He had that
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: great contract year, the year the Nationals won the World
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: Series twenty nineteen when they beat the Astros in the
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: World Series. But his OPS over five years with the
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: Angels is just seven seventeen. So all told, Rendon has
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: only played in two hundred and fifty seven games and
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: he's missed four hundred and fifty one games with twelve
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: count them twelve stints on the injured list since twenty
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: twenty one.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: For the Angels. He had three.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: Stints on the injured list last year hamstring, lower back,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: or bleak issue, so I mean he's really checked all
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: the boxes. Unfortunately since then, it does clear the way
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: for their free agent acquisition Yoan Mocatta to be the
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: everyday starting third baseman. He had been with a White
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: Sox back in twenty nineteen and played only two hundred
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: and eight games the past three seasons. Injuries always such
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: a big, big part of what happens in pro sports
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: and the way it goes, so a good signing for
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: the Padres, a tough situation for the Angels and Alex Bregman.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: I mean, we're slowly but surely kim seeing the dismantling
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: of those Astros teams that had what seven consecutive trips
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: to the LCS and a couple of World Series titles.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I mean, we're seeing it slowly, piece by piece. Kyle
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: Tucker leaving now now Bregman's gone, yeah, and the only
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: remaining piece is what el tuove?
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: Yeah? Right? Yeah.
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: And the crazy thing was that the Boston Red Sox
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: making a free agency signing the cheapest team in the
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: in the league right now, the Boston Red Sox signing Bregman,
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: get out of here. It it caught me a little
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: bit off guard, I'm to be honest with you, but
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: it does seem that the Astros are trying to get younger, right,
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: kind of moving away from the guys that were such
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: a central piece of the Astros run. But I don't
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: think Astros fans are really that surprised by this move.
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: Didn't seem like they were willing to pay him what
- 1:22:45Speaker 3: Reckman wanted to get in the open market. And if
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: you're a Red Sox fan, you know, maybe some signs
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: of life that your your front office actually wants to
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: spend some money.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: Well and with Walker Bueller, and you know, they've they've
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: been active enough a little put it and it was
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: interesting to hear what Gino said about the Ray he
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: doesn't think they're done. He thinks in the Red Sox
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: are not viewed as being a small market or a
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: poor money team. They have money, and they did have
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: a relatively high payroll, but they had not spent much
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: in free agency to your point, and that now looks
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: like they're willing to do this. Folks may have been
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: surprised to hear me not make much mention of show
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: Atani during that visit with Gene Watson, but I can
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: tell you this. He is pitching in spring training and
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: he's working on his sweeper. He's throwing off flat ground
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: right now. Otani said he wanted to play as much
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: as possible, as many games as possible as he was
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: asked about, you know, juggling the hitting and the pitching
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: and all that other kind of stuff. He said, but
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: if the team feels like I should get a break,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I'll follow that. Dave Roberts has said that he is
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: not anticipating Otani dhing as much this coming year as
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: he did last year, not only because he's going to
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: be pitching again, but they're just probably going to want
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: to give him more rest in between starts and not
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: have him dh as much. I still think he's probably
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: capable of doing thirty thirty, just not fifty to fifty.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: You know, that was a season for the Ages last year,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: so I don't necessarily see that happening. But we'll see
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: how that goes as well. And Garrett Cole says he's
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: really good, in a really good spot right now compared
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: to recent years. He started his off season throwing program
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: earlier than in previous winners, and so he's now two
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: years removed from winning the American Lexie Young Award. He
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: turns thirty four this year. Can believe that Garrett Cole
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: turns thirty four this year? He said, But by my
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: expectations are the same. After the Yankees first spring training
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: workout yesterday, he thinks he's in a really good place
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: and he's he's ready to go there. And did it
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: make you happy to hear that that?
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: Gene Watson said, the Rangers are going to be sneaky
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: good this year. Hey, I think we will too.
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: Again, there's always a the Bruce Boche thing or every
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: other year you know he's won a World Series, it's
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: felt like, so I me, this would be if the
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: Rangers pull this off if Bruce pulls us off. This
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: is what the fourth fourth time he's done it.
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: Yeah, where you have a World championship season, then a
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: sub five hundred season, then a World championship season, then
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: a sub five hundred season, then a World championship season,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: then a sub five hundred season, and then all that
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: with the Giants. Then he had a World championship season
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: with the Rangers in a sub five hundred season. So,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: like Jean said, look what he's doing for I don't I.
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: Don't think any team in the AL West right now
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: appears to just run away with the division Astros included. Yeah,
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: which is a huge change from just even two years
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: ago when the Astros won it with the Rangers won
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: the World Series that last week of the regular season
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: at the side of the AL West. So we'll see.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: But I do go optimistic about the season. I just
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: want to can our rotation and bullpen get healthy and
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: will the bats be awake?
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: Did you see who was in town the other day
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: with the Longhorns hanging out with the long Horn baseball team?
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: Was it McConaughey again, Nolan Aronado? Oh nice?
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: And his contract thing is still up in the air.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: The Cardinals opened spring training yesterday.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Who's his agent? Scott Boris, Well, it might be I
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: don't know, I have it. I have it. Scene.
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: If you're a free agent in February or you having
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: to figure out your contract in February, you got to
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: be a Scott Boars agent, right.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: Yeah, So get this, he tried to.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: I mean that, you know, the Cardinals trying to make
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: a deal with the Astros, as we know Scott Bars right, okay,
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: and then he invoked the no trade clause. He didn
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: will go to Houston, so John mostly acted. Cardinals General
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Manister said, we're adults. Would it be awkward? I would
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: imagine there'd be a moment of awkwardness, But I still
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: think he's a professional baseball player and he's currently a
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Saint Louis Cardinal, and we all understand what you're here.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: You're pushing forward.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: That mean trying to accomplish something during spring training possibly,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: but no guarantees at that point, so it's up up
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: in the air. So there it is, and he is
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: scheduled to report to the Cardinals camp on Sunday in Florida.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: All right, we will be back to wrap up today's
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: edition of the program. Coming up here on sports Media
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred, The Zone
