- 0:00Speaker 1: This is an iHeart Podcast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Guaranteed human.
- 0:04Speaker 3: Previously on The Chosen People. The Earth was still young,
- 0:10Speaker 3: and humanity multiplied from within small families and stretched outward. Cain,
- 0:15Speaker 3: driven by a restless ambition, ventured further east, carving a
- 0:20Speaker 3: name for himself in the annals of history. His progeny,
- 0:24Speaker 3: a dark brood, sowed the seeds of destruction, chaos, and pride.
- 0:29Speaker 3: marring God's creation with their deeds. Seth, however, chose a
- 0:34Speaker 3: different path, one laden with the weight of redemption. Amidst
- 0:39Speaker 3: these clashing legacies, Enoch walked, a righteous man navigating the
- 0:45Speaker 3: perilous expanse.
- 0:46Speaker 4: This earth has been corrupted, Matty.
- 0:49Speaker 2: It's been tainted, not just by the giants, but by
- 0:53Speaker 2: the darkness that's spread in the hearts of men. I
- 0:57Speaker 2: fear the Creator won't endure this evil much longer.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Why is that?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Evil grieves his heart. This corruption, this violence, it wasn't
- 1:10Speaker 2: his intention.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Enoch left the earth, and now it was Methuselah's turn
- 1:16Speaker 3: to carry the torch of God's promise.
- 1:19Speaker 1: My spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he
- 1:23Speaker 1: is flesh. A hundred and twenty years is what they
- 1:27Speaker 1: will have left. I will blot out man from the
- 1:31Speaker 1: face of the land, for I am sorry that I
- 1:35Speaker 1: have made them.
- 1:37Speaker 3: When Methuselah passed, Noah was the last to honor the Creator,
- 1:42Speaker 3: a solitary light in a dark world.
- 1:46Speaker 1: A storm was coming.
- 1:48Speaker 3: The purifying and terrifying work of God was at hand. Yet,
- 1:53Speaker 3: in the midst of it all, Hope still remained. It
- 1:57Speaker 3: flickered like a faint light, carried carefully by Noah.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Perhaps we will endure the judgment to come.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Run, Ham! Don't look back!
- 2:13Speaker 5: Where's Japheth?
- 2:14Speaker 4: I'll go back and get him.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Go get father!
- 2:16Speaker 3: Ham's instincts took over.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He slid under a wooden beam.
- 2:20Speaker 3: And bolted under the archway leading out of the city.
- 2:24Speaker 3: The sound of cackling men grew louder from behind, a
- 2:27Speaker 3: dreadful chorus to his escape. Ham obeyed his brother's command
- 2:32Speaker 3: and did not look back, though he could hear the
- 2:35Speaker 3: sickening sound of fists striking flesh. Shen's sacrifice echoed in
- 2:41Speaker 3: Ham's ears, driving him forward. Tears streamed down his face,
- 2:46Speaker 3: evaporating almost as soon as they fell. Their father had
- 2:49Speaker 3: warned them about lingering in the city. Hem ran like
- 2:53Speaker 3: a hunted deer, his feet barely touching the ground as.
- 2:57Speaker 4: He crossed grass and logs and.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Leaped over brooks.
- 3:00Speaker 3: His father's farm lay beyond the city, nestled in a
- 3:04Speaker 3: protective embrace of twin mountains. Smoke curled from the chimney,
- 3:09Speaker 3: a beacon of warmth and safety. Ham burst through the door,
- 3:13Speaker 3: collapsing in front of the dusty hearth.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Father, Shem and Japheth have been captured by the men
- 3:19Speaker 6: of the city.
- 3:19Speaker 2: We only went because- Do you know which part of.
- 3:21Speaker 6: The city- Yes, the south entrance, in the Tanner's district.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Come with me.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Noah retrieved a bow and arrow and slung it over
- 3:29Speaker 3: his shoulder. He darted toward the city, saying little to
- 3:33Speaker 3: his youngest son as he paced behind him. Noah had
- 3:36Speaker 3: repeatedly warned his sons about the city's dangers. It was
- 3:40Speaker 3: a den of iniquity. The city's corruption was pervasive and
- 3:44Speaker 3: violence lurked in every shadow. At times, it was a
- 3:48Speaker 3: necessary task since most precious materials were hoarded there. but
- 3:52Speaker 3: Noah had strictly warned them not to linger. Bloodlust corrupted
- 3:57Speaker 3: every inch of the city. If you remained too long,
- 4:02Speaker 3: it was only a matter of time before a passing
- 4:05Speaker 3: glance or nod of the head would earn you a
- 4:07Speaker 3: spear through the throat, or worse. The surrounding villages weren't
- 4:12Speaker 3: much safer either. Mankind was blighted by bloodshed and discord.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Noah was determined to oppose the culture. Like his great-grandfather Enoch,
- 4:24Speaker 3: Noah possessed a heart attuned to God's voice. He walked
- 4:28Speaker 3: with him daily, as one would with a friend. It
- 4:32Speaker 3: was a lost art, hearkening back to the ancient days
- 4:36Speaker 3: in the Great Garden. Noah and Ham reached the south entrance.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Noah briskly strode around a jagged wooden totem and crouched down.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Ham remained his shadow, mimicking every move. Ham could feel
- 4:50Speaker 3: his father's steady breaths, neither panicked nor frustrated. Ham, ashamed
- 4:56Speaker 3: at his own stress, pointed to the large building made
- 4:59Speaker 3: of bone and wood.
- 5:00Speaker 6: They should be in there. I swear, father, we didn't
- 5:04Speaker 6: do anything wrong. I wanted to buy a carving knife,
- 5:07Speaker 6: but didn't realize what a harsh man the tanner was.
- 5:10Speaker 6: He said our hides would make him more than the
- 5:13Speaker 6: southern gazelles.
- 5:14Speaker 3: These.
- 5:15Speaker 4: People fall further into darkness each day, Ham. They've become
- 5:20Speaker 4: more like animals than humans. Your mistake was staying in
- 5:25Speaker 4: the den too long.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Noah was not a violent man. He was not corrupted
- 5:30Speaker 3: by the same evil that blighted the others. His bow
- 5:34Speaker 3: was for moments like these and these alone. Noah removed
- 5:38Speaker 3: his bow, placed an arrow on the string, and stretched
- 5:42Speaker 3: it backward. His arms flexed in place. perfectly still. His
- 5:47Speaker 3: breath was steady as the rivers flow. He surveyed the
- 5:51Speaker 3: scene through the arrow's shaft, marking the men by the
- 5:55Speaker 3: rear entrance and the livestock pen nearby. A large water
- 5:59Speaker 3: basin stood beside the pen. Noah breathed in sharply, then
- 6:04Speaker 3: released the arrow with an exhale. It whistled through the air,
- 6:08Speaker 3: striking one of the thin legs underneath. The basin tumbled
- 6:12Speaker 3: with a loud crash, spilling water over the livestock and
- 6:16Speaker 3: causing a panic. The men rushed to the scene, leaving
- 6:19Speaker 3: the rear entrance unguarded. Now Noah and Ham darted toward
- 6:24Speaker 3: the back entrance. Noah's legs were lean and muscular, easily
- 6:28Speaker 3: kicking down the door. Shem was tied up, face swollen
- 6:32Speaker 3: and bloodied from several beatings. Japheth was in better shape.
- 6:37Speaker 3: supposedly because the Tanner wanted him unblemished. They swiftly removed
- 6:41Speaker 3: their vines and held them out. The four rushed out,
- 6:44Speaker 3: nearly unnoticed, until a voice cackled from behind.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Is that the, uh, hermit farmer, uh, Noah?
- 6:51Speaker 1: Here in the city.
- 6:53Speaker 5: What a rare sight this is.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Noah and his sons were cut off by some large men.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Their ridged brows and serpent-like eyes gave away their heritage.
- 7:03Speaker 3: These men were descendants of the Nephilim, One struck Noah
- 7:06Speaker 3: in the jaw, sending him back into the mud. The
- 7:09Speaker 3: tanner skulked closer and grabbed Noah by the hair.
- 7:13Speaker 1: If I'd known these were your boys, I would have
- 7:17Speaker 1: prepared them over a fire to enjoy between bread.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Let the boys go!
- 7:25Speaker 1: Or what, son of Seth?
- 7:29Speaker 4: What will you do to me?
- 7:30Speaker 6: Will you shoot me with your tiny twigs?
- 7:34Speaker 3: Nah!
- 7:35Speaker 5: I know you don't have it in you.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You wouldn't swat a fly.
- 7:42Speaker 3: The tanner removed Noah's bow and snapped it over his leg.
- 7:46Speaker 3: The beastly man laughed and wiped his nose.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Your boys don't know how business is done here.
- 7:53Speaker 1: You should have taught them right.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Maybe I'll keep the youngest, raise him myself.
- 8:01Speaker 3: He seized Ham's jaw, his rotten teeth bared in a smile.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Noah's eyes remained steady, his palms outstretched.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Let's negotiate and find a path to peace. Hey, we've
- 8:15Speaker 4: crops we've cultivated. How about three years of grain for
- 8:20Speaker 4: the trouble?
- 8:20Speaker 5: Why get three years when I could have three fine
- 8:25Speaker 5: young men working my.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Shop for me? Maybe I'll kill you. Take them and
- 8:33Speaker 4: go back for your wife and land.
- 8:36Speaker 3: The Tanner's grin widened. He pressed a blade to Noah's throat,
- 8:41Speaker 3: but a distant drumbeat stilled his hand. The Tanner's smile
- 8:45Speaker 3: faded as the drums grew louder, accompanied by bestial screams.
- 8:50Speaker 3: The sounds intensified, causing the Tanner and his companions to
- 8:54Speaker 3: shake in fear.
- 8:55Speaker 4: They're back!
- 8:56Speaker 3: The tanner lowered his blade and ran back into his home.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Noah and his sons turned to run, but the gates
- 9:02Speaker 3: burst open and the woods split open in a hundred directions,
- 9:06Speaker 3: revealing warriors from Cain's line, feral and bloodthirsty, come to
- 9:11Speaker 3: murder and plunder. Their weapons were crudely crafted, not for
- 9:15Speaker 3: noble battle, but for torture. Some were swords with jagged tips.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Others were clubs with barbed edges. Some came with nets
- 9:25Speaker 3: and others with nothing, naked and giant, cracking the skulls
- 9:29Speaker 3: of those unfortunate enough to cross their path. Noah and
- 9:33Speaker 3: the boys hid behind the fallen water basin. Ham trembled
- 9:37Speaker 3: in place, tears silently falling from.
- 9:40Speaker 4: His shaking cheeks.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Noah turned and gave him a reassuring squeeze on the arm.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Trust in God. We will find a way.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Father, look!
- 9:49Speaker 3: Shem pointed to a reservoir beside the gate. The pool
- 9:53Speaker 3: was filled from a small opening in the wall, allowing
- 9:56Speaker 3: water from the brook to flow freely in. Noah nodded
- 10:00Speaker 3: in approval and signaled for the boys to hold. They
- 10:03Speaker 3: waited until the last of the men stormed the city.
- 10:07Speaker 3: They were all unhinged like rabid dogs. People slaughtered for sport,
- 10:12Speaker 3: violence for the sake of violence. They lived in a
- 10:15Speaker 3: truly fallen world, a world of despair. When it seemed
- 10:20Speaker 3: like they were all occupied, Noah charged his sons to run.
- 10:24Speaker 3: They flew to the reservoir and dove in, then swam
- 10:28Speaker 3: through the small opening leading to the other side of
- 10:31Speaker 3: the gate. Noah waited for all his sons to dive
- 10:34Speaker 3: in before bolting. His legs were worn from years of
- 10:38Speaker 3: farming but still strong enough to pound through the mud.
- 10:41Speaker 3: He dove into the water but before reaching the opening
- 10:44Speaker 3: he was pulled out by the ankle.
- 10:47Speaker 1: A man threw him backward and.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Pressed his thumbs on Noah's neck. His hands were thick
- 10:52Speaker 3: like the paws of a bear. Noah feared he wouldn't
- 10:55Speaker 3: escape them. He reached for a stick, a stone, anything
- 10:59Speaker 3: to use against a man, but his fists were empty
- 11:03Speaker 3: and weakening. His vision blurred at the edges and his
- 11:07Speaker 3: head throbbed from the lack of oxygen. Before succumbing to
- 11:10Speaker 3: the man's grip, he was struck on the side of
- 11:13Speaker 3: the head. Japheth had returned for him.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Come on, father, up!
- 11:18Speaker 3: Japheth lifted Noah. The two stumbled into the water and
- 11:22Speaker 3: swam through the hole and out the other side. Shem
- 11:25Speaker 3: and Ham were already running, arrows and stones whistling past them.
- 11:29Speaker 3: They escaped into the wilderness, bruised but alive, the shadow
- 11:34Speaker 3: of the city left behind. Shem and Japheth stared blankly
- 11:40Speaker 3: into the crackling fire. Their mother pressed a damp cloth
- 11:44Speaker 3: to their bloody cheeks, her touch tender yet firm. Shem
- 11:48Speaker 3: winced and pulled away, while Japheth remained still, his eyes unfocused.
- 11:54Speaker 5: How many times has your father warned you about bartering
- 11:57Speaker 5: in the city without him? Whose idea was it?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Shem and Japheth's eyes shifted to Ham, then quickly back
- 12:05Speaker 3: to the fire, betraying their guilt.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Ham, you three are men, ready to marry and start
- 12:13Speaker 5: your own families. Think about your responsibility to the future
- 12:18Speaker 5: next time you think about something so foolish.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Yes, Mother.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Tomorrow, we head west to our relatives beyond the Tishar.
- 12:31Speaker 5: You will meet your future wives. Do not mention any
- 12:35Speaker 5: of this recklessness when we go. Do you all understand?
- 12:39Speaker 3: The boys all nodded with weary faces. Noah entered, his
- 12:44Speaker 3: steps heavy with fatigue. His voice, though gruff, carried an
- 12:48Speaker 3: earnestness that commanded attention.
- 12:51Speaker 4: These are dark times, my sons. Remaining in the light
- 12:56Speaker 4: will require wisdom. Learn to listen to the voice of God.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Noah, come here. Let me look at you.
- 13:06Speaker 4: No, no.
- 13:06Speaker 3: I'm fine.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I'm fine.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I'm going to walk with the Creator. I will be
- 13:15Speaker 4: back before dawn.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Wrapping himself in thick fur, Noah stepped into the frigid night.
- 13:22Speaker 3: The evening mist, illuminated by the moonlight, hovered over the valley.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Like a specter.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Noah ascended a small hill, his mind turning to the Creator.
- 13:33Speaker 3: He spoke of his sons, the city. and the pervasive
- 13:37Speaker 3: wickedness that plagued the sons of Adam.
- 13:39Speaker 4: What kind of world are my sons inheriting? I fear
- 13:44Speaker 4: they'll be forced to become men of bloodshed just to survive.
- 13:49Speaker 3: The grass underfoot swayed slightly. The mist followed. Noah drew
- 13:54Speaker 3: a deep breath and closed his eyes. He had practiced
- 13:58Speaker 3: the art of listening. He knew the Creator was about
- 14:01Speaker 3: to speak. He could feel his presence in and around him.
- 14:05Speaker 1: The earth is filled with violence and corruption. I will
- 14:10Speaker 1: endure it no longer.
- 14:14Speaker 4: What does that mean?
- 14:15Speaker 1: I have determined to make an end to all flesh.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Visions assailed Noah's mind. Corrupt cities built by the Nephilim. War,
- 14:26Speaker 3: senseless violence and despair. Then, He saw the heavens open,
- 14:31Speaker 3: and a cascade of water fell from the skies. Through
- 14:35Speaker 3: the roaring thunder, God's voice boomed.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Behold, I would destroy them with the earth. I would
- 14:44Speaker 1: bring a flood to wipe this earth clean. All flesh
- 14:49Speaker 1: shall drown, and the breath of life under heaven. will cease.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Noah's heart tightened. He fell to his knees, the weight
- 14:59Speaker 3: of God's words pressing down on him.
- 15:02Speaker 4: What am I to do with this knowledge? Do I
- 15:05Speaker 4: wait in silence for it to happen?
- 15:07Speaker 2: Or rush my family to the mountains?
- 15:10Speaker 1: You have found favor in my sight. You walk with me,
- 15:15Speaker 1: speak with me, and have kept yourself from the wickedness
- 15:19Speaker 1: blighting humanity. I have appointed you, Noah, build an ark
- 15:25Speaker 1: an ark i will establish my covenant with you noah
- 15:30Speaker 1: you shall build a vessel of salvation for you your
- 15:34Speaker 1: wife your sons and their.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Wives what of the others what of the.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Animals two of every living thing shall accompany you one
- 15:45Speaker 1: male and one female i shall charge you as their
- 15:50Speaker 1: steward You will keep them alive until the time has
- 15:54Speaker 1: come to walk the earth again. How much time do
- 15:58Speaker 1: we have? Go when the sun rises. Take your sons
- 16:02Speaker 1: and begin. The waters are coming.
- 16:06Speaker 3: The divine presence shifted with the wind, leaving Noah alone
- 16:11Speaker 3: on the hill. He gazed eastward, where the distant city's
- 16:15Speaker 3: light shimmered dimly through the fog. Tears glistened in his eyes.
- 16:21Speaker 3: His jaw quivered, then his shoulders, and finally his knees.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Noah fell to the ground and wept, gripping the damp
- 16:29Speaker 3: earth in his palms. The knowledge of God's will was
- 16:33Speaker 3: just and true, but it did nothing to numb the
- 16:36Speaker 3: pain in Noah's heart. Noah sobbed, knowing he was about
- 16:42Speaker 3: to witness the destruction of the world. Ham slammed his
- 16:49Speaker 3: shoulder into the side of a cedar tree. He'd been
- 16:52Speaker 3: hacking away at it for over an hour, and all
- 16:54Speaker 3: it needed was some applied force. Ham was glad to
- 16:58Speaker 3: let out some aggression. Months of hard labor wore on him.
- 17:02Speaker 3: His first days as a married man were spent chopping
- 17:06Speaker 3: wood and laying pitch. All because his father claimed to
- 17:09Speaker 3: hear something from God. The whole thing seemed inconceivable and far-fetched.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Shem approached with the saw to make the tree into
- 17:18Speaker 3: gopher wood.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Well done, Ham. Ready to smooth it out?
- 17:24Speaker 3: I suppose.
- 17:25Speaker 1: What's wrong?
- 17:27Speaker 6: We're building a ship in the middle of the valley. Shem,
- 17:30Speaker 6: that's what's wrong. Everyone from here to the desert has
- 17:33Speaker 6: visited to mock us, and I don't blame them.
- 17:36Speaker 5: This is insane!
- 17:38Speaker 6: How are these planes going to flood? Where will the
- 17:40Speaker 6: water even come from?
- 17:42Speaker 2: I don't quite understand it either, but I have little
- 17:45Speaker 2: reason to doubt our father.
- 17:47Speaker 6: What a firstborn thing to say.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Shem and Ham stared at each other intensely for a moment,
- 17:53Speaker 3: but their stares quickly broke into brotherly smiles. Ham shook
- 17:57Speaker 3: his head and sighed.
- 17:59Speaker 6: I'm tired, hungry, and feel foolish.
- 18:04Speaker 3: But I'm here.
- 18:05Speaker 1: That you are.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Shem ruffled Ham's hair, earning a playful punch on the
- 18:10Speaker 3: shoulder in return. Together, they smoothed out the beam and
- 18:14Speaker 3: carried it to Noah and Japheth, who were deep in
- 18:16Speaker 3: discussion about the Ark's construction.
- 18:19Speaker 4: Once all the gopher wood has been smoothed out and measured,
- 18:23Speaker 4: we'll begin making the rooms. The outside will be covered
- 18:27Speaker 4: with pitch. Remind me the dimensions again. God has shown
- 18:32Speaker 4: it all to me. 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits wide.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Its height will be 30 cubits. The roof will be
- 18:41Speaker 4: finished to a cubit above. It will be made with
- 18:46Speaker 4: three separate decks. We'll organize the animals accordingly.
- 18:52Speaker 2: The door will need to be much higher to be
- 18:53Speaker 2: above the water, but it also needs to be drawn
- 18:56Speaker 2: down so we can still enter.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Precisely, sir, yes.
- 19:01Speaker 2: What about food storage?
- 19:03Speaker 4: The animals' food will be stored in the bottom. Ours
- 19:07Speaker 4: will be stored beside our quarters.
- 19:09Speaker 1: They looked up.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Charcoal clouds galloped across the sky. With them came a
- 19:16Speaker 3: chilly wind that bit at their cheeks. They hadn't heard
- 19:20Speaker 3: the clapping of thunder before. The sound made their muscles tense,
- 19:25Speaker 3: as if they were witnessing the birth of a new predator.
- 19:29Speaker 4: And so, it begins.
