- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: Thank you for uh taking the time, I'm sure, out of your busy schedule this crazy season to share some of your knowledge and uh and in-depth insight with some of the teams that you cover up there in the uh ESPN Ithaca coverage area.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Today, during the first quarter, we'll be reviewing the upcoming matchups.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: And I just want to let you know that I've been in touch as you know, as soon as five minutes before this podcast with a Section Four scheduler and many media professionals in the area trying to put together the most accurate schedule for you at the time of this recording.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: But I also want to let you know that prior to any games, either if you get the opportunity to attend or you want to listen to it or whatever, make sure you check your school's website to make sure that that game is still happening at that particular time and at that particular venue.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Because as we all know, things are really dynamic this season and just kind of have to roll with the punches.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Now, during the second quarter, our guest Dan will give us insight and in-depth analysis of the northern teams in section four that they cover when they're ESPN Ithaca listening area.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: So that'll be quite entertaining, I'm sure.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: So let's jump right into it.

- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Deposit Hancock at Walton.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: That'll be at 1:30.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: And uh one I think a lot of people are looking forward to, and they've marked on the calendar when the schedule first came out was Tyoga at Newark Valley.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: That'll be 1:30.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Ithaca is going to be at Horseheads at 1:30.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Harpersville Afton at Del High at 4 o'clock.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: And Corning Painted Post will be playing Indian River at Auburn at 5 p.m.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Norwich, Oneana, and Whitney Point and Owe all have buys.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Now let's jump into the eight-player division, which is the largest division now with 11 teams in Section 4.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Friday evening, there's two games on tap.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: Unadilla Valley at Unitego Franklin, that's at 6 p.m.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: And Lansing is at Almire Notre Dame.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: And that time is to be determined.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Saturday, Moravia travels to Thomas A.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Edison in the Heights.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: That'll be an 11 a.m.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: kickoff.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Trumansburg is going to be at Newfield.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: That's a noon kickoff.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: And Spencer Vinette and Cander is going to play Ontioria out of Boysville, New York.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: That game will be played at Sydney at 6:30 p.m.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Green and Oxford both have a bye.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: That takes us through the first quarter.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: And now, Dan, you're up now.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: And I'd like to uh turn it over to you and uh you take it from there.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Sure thing.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'll I guess I'll start with uh some eight-man teams.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Like you said, that's the the big thing going on right now uh here in section four.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And uh Lansing, I'll start with them.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: That's uh right in our backyard here since our station's located in Lansing.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Uh they won the Section Four championship in eight-man football last year.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: They're led by uh quarterback by the name of Ben Vincent, who's incredibly athletic.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: He's gonna go to Alfred University next year and play for uh the Saxons uh with that team in college.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: So uh he's he's great.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: They just beat Moravia the over the past uh weekend, 32 to 14.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Uh two-game winning streak for Lansing.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, they they just have uh a great coach in Brett Hotchkiss, and uh they can beat you on the air in the air and uh on the ground as well.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And uh that's what I like to see when when teams let their quarterbacks let it fly.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: That's that's what I like to see in this area, and Ben Vinson certainly is able to do that.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Uh a team that's really been coming up in the eight-man circuit uh is Newfield.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Uh they have uh Jacob Humble at quarterback, who is a phenomenal athlete.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Uh he's going to St.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: John Fisher to play football uh next season.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And they last year they were uh in the Section Four championship against Lansing.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Uh Jacob Humble was unfortunately injured in that game, uh, and Lansing ended up winning uh and winning the Section Four championship.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: But this year uh Newfield, they they've been uh they've haven't uh they're having a good run.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: They lost to Spence for Net and Candor.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: That's their lone loss on the year.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Uh other than that, they they put up 74 points in week one, which was uh pretty crazy.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So that was a great way for them to start the season.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Uh and uh I'm I'm I'm I'm a big fan of the Newfield Trojans.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: They have a very great fan base.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Uh and and uh their coach Jeff Stein was a former Texas high school football coach.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Uh it's his second year at Newfield, and uh they're a fun team to watch.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: The newest eight-man football team we have, or one of the newest football teams we have uh is is Trumansburg, and they were on a multi-year hiatus uh before coming back last year, and they're led by Julian Minos, who was a former IC tight end.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Uh and the second year uh for them this year has been pretty impressive because you you'd think a team would you know have some growing pains, uh, but their defense is really well put together.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Uh they they they shut down Omari Notre Dame, kept them to eight points.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Um Moravia, they kept them to 16 points.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Uh and and their defense is is just really sound, and it's something really to uh be impressed by, uh especially since they're such a young team.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: And on the offensive side, they have a talented quarterback, Nathan Fulton, who can uh really throw the ball downfield.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: I I I made this uh point on the broadcast when we had their game last uh last week that the deeper he throws the teams, the more accurate he is, which is uh very fun to watch.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And uh yeah, they had they have a bunch of good athletes on offense as well.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: So uh I've been a big fan of the the Trumansburg Blue Raiders and seeing their growth uh coming from you know being away from football for so many years and going from being an 11-man team to being an eight-man team, they've handled that transition very well.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Uh Moravia has gone down to the eight-man circuit uh this year.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Uh they have a good quarterback in Kyle Witten, and uh they've just been they've they've been struggling against the teams that are more used to eight-man football because that transition can be tough when you're uh not really expecting to go down to eight-men, and uh you go from five men on the line to just three.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: It's it can be tough.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And Moravia's had those uh growing pains.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they'll stick around with eight-man football uh next year.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Uh I can I can see them jumping back, but uh either way, they they have a good quarterback in Kyle Witten, who's uh who can definitely run the ball too.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: So uh that's that's that's Moravia.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: But one of the very impressive teams is Spencer Vanette and Kander.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: They were a last-minute addition to the eight-man circuit this year, and boy, they are they are crushing it because they are they're putting up over 50 points a game.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, and they are just it's it's seemingly impossible to stop them on the ground.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Uh they have Hunter Haynes and Devin Beach who uh come out of the backfield and are just really hard to tackle.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Uh Haynes just bounces around everywhere.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: You you'd think he'll go into like a pile of defenders and you think, all right, he's gonna go down, and then he busts out a 50-yard run out of that.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: And Devin Beach is just a big, uh powerful runner, and and he had five touchdowns last week uh against Trumansburg.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Just a really impressive uh team they have there in Spencer Banet and Kander.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And uh for a team that didn't expect to be an eight-man team this year, they've really handled that transition really well.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: They they leaned on their running game, and their quarterback, Nick Thomas, can uh can throw the ball when necessary.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: They'll lull you to sleep with their running with their running attack, and then there's a play action downfield, and they score a deep touchdown on you.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Uh so that's the eight-man teams uh in our area.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: And as far as 11-man teams go, uh, we have uh Groton uh and and Groton's a Class D team.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: I expect them to make the move to eight-man uh pretty soon because they have a lot of talent.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: They have Caleb Manning, who's he's going to Alford University too to play football, uh, along with Ben Vincent, the Lansing quarterback.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: And they they have the the pieces to to be a successful football team, but they're just not beating these bigger teams because they're a class D school, and a lot of these 11-man teams are uh, you know, class C, Class B, uh, and above.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: So they're they're like a they're a smaller school trying to play 11-man football, and it's tough, but they have uh an all-state running back in Kayla Manning, who's uh an excellent athlete.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: And I think I'd expect them to move to eight-man sooner rather than later, uh joining the other teams here in uh in Tompkins County.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And that that goes for Dryden as well.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: They're they're an 11-man team that's been uh struggling a bit this year.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Uh but they they have a nice new field.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: They they just installed a new turf field.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: It's their first season uh with a new uh turf stadium there, and it's it's it's beautiful.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: And uh they've they've also like like Rotten, they they're struggling to take on these bigger teams uh on the 11-man circuit.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: So uh I think I think eight-man for these teams that are that are on the the the the the lower end of the 11-man totem pole, uh eight-man is right there, and and you can you can definitely succeed uh like Spencer Burnett and Kandor, because they went two and six last year, did uh did SBEC, and they they are really a powerhouse uh here in eight-man football.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: So that move can be attractive to teams like that.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And and that's that's what I expect for teams like Groton and Dryden in the future.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Uh we have a powerhouse in Newark Valley who uh on the 11-man circuit.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: A couple years ago, they were winning state championships, and uh they're they're they're not at that level anymore, but they still have those coaches, they still have that system.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: They're still a very good, very tough team.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, and like you said, they're they have the top matchup this week.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And everyone knows you here in Newark Valley football, you know it's gonna be something good, and uh they have a great game plan too.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: They can mix it up on the ground and and through the air.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: They're a very talented team uh here in Class C.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: So uh Ithaca is our only double-A school in the area, and uh they have had uh they've had a tough time this season because they've only played one game.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Uh they've had three games get canceled on them, and that's just uh that's not the kind of season you want to have.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: But the one thing I like about their team the most is their young quarterback, uh Chase Bazito.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: He's got a year left, he's a junior, and man, he can really throw.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It's it's very impressive what he can do in the pocket.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, he's got a great arm and can find wide receivers downfield with ease.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Uh so he's very, very talented.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to see what he can do his senior year uh with a full season where games aren't getting canceled left and right because yeah, like you only have one game in uh in four weeks uh into the season.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: That's not that's not good, that's not good for the development.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: So uh hopefully we'll be able to see more Ithaca football uh next year.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: And let me see, did I go through all of them?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I believe I did.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's everyone.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: I think we checked all the boxes, Dan.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, great job and great insight.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: And I know our listeners will really appreciate it, especially the student athletes and coaches that you're talking about.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: It's always nice to kind of hear about those things.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: And uh one thing I'd like to ask is how do our listeners get a chance to listen to you and your uh compadre, Nick Karski, up there broadcast on ESPN Ithaca?
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So if you're in the area, we're on uh 1160 a.m.

- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Uh I like to think we have great content on those platforms.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: That was a lot for our listeners to digest.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: What I'll do, Dan, is I'll make sure I get the details of that information and then I'll post that in the show notes so that our listeners get the opportunity to go and listen in any one of those particular fashions or follow you.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Great stuff.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: And also thanks again, Dan, for taking the time.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Really appreciate it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Look forward to having you on as a guest in the future.

- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Welcome to games of the week with Coach Roger Neal.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Welcome, Roger.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: And uh Tim, hey, thank you.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: And we got some uh some good matchups to talk about here uh for this upcoming weekend is the season, the abbreviated season, is uh moving along very quickly, week five of all these games that are scheduled.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: And we always urge everybody to pay very close attention to not only this website, but certainly their school's websites because we're seeing games literally change in a in a day or two.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: So uh keep a very close tab on everything because of COVID and the restrictions and all things going on.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: But some of the highlight games that we're looking at this weekend, UE will match up against Maine Endwell at Maine and Well.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Now, this is a uh a good rivalry game, backyard teams battling each other.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Many of these players will play uh in summer leagues and baseball and other sports against or with each other, but always for bragging rights.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: And so even though Maine Enwell has rolled by their opponents so far this year, you look for a good one with UE visiting Maine Enwell.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Last week, NUE was able to knock off Binghamton 35 to 14, and Maine Enwell rolled by Shenango Valley 49 to 14.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Now, the Spartans are about to say high flying.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: That's pretty much of an understatement because they've scored 224 points so far this year.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: That's averaging 56 points a game.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: The question is if you're trying to coordinate the defense for UE, what do you do to try to stop them?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: We'll find out perhaps this weekend.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Another big one would be the Forks against Vestel, and that's at Shidango Forks.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Forks has been incredible.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Also, the cream for the crop, along with Emmy in our area this season so far, is a off an arm.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: The forks finally gave up some points last weekend.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: They played Norwich and won at 34 to 15.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: The 15 points, that is the only tally that they've given up all year.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, they've shut out the opponents.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: They've scored 162 points in four games, 40 plus points per game.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Meanwhile, Vestal coming on, and they have defeated uh the last couple of teams that they've played.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: They beat Binghamton 56-0 and JC 35 to 6.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: So they're putting up some big points here.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: 91 points in the past couple of games that they played.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: That's a 45 point per game average.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: Going to some of the smaller schools, Class D competition, Tyoga at Newark Valley.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: And uh Tyoga comes in.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: The Tigers four and oh, and Newark Valley tied with a record of two and two now.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: The big thing with Newark Valley, the two losses have occurred against much bigger schools, Corning and Horsehead.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: So that record is deceiving.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: That should be a good one.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Eight-man football, Lansing takes a three-and-one record into play.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: In their three wins, they've showed a ton of offense, scoring 49, 47, and 32 points, 122 points for the offensive machine.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: That's a 40 plus per game average as well against Notre Dame one and two.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: So those are some of the games we're zeroing in on as we take a look at high school football in section four this weekend.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: As usual, Roger, you nailed it.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: Thank you very much, Coach Roger Neal, and we look forward to talking to you next week.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: Sounds good.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
