- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Gioket Akara Kunasatu Tasulam Goiltagama I hope you're doing well Ismisha Julian I guess Tolme Rash Rish for another episode in this episode we're going to be talking about colours in Irish.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Like emotions, colours are on things.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Like Ta Gurum Eronch.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: There's blue on the house.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: But it means the house is blue.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Colour is conceived of differently in Irish than it is in English.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Today in Irish, some colours are used to reference things which are unnatural or unliving, such as a plastic chair.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: So for example, the green that would be on the plastic chair would be a term specific to that kind of green, which is an unnatural color.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And likewise some other colors are applied to things that are living or natural, like grass or hair or trees.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: So the green for the grass would be a different word than the green for the plastic chair.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: In the past, colors were also associated with how vivid something is or how muted it was.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: So for example, the green of that plastic chair would be Una.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: That's an artificial green color today, but it can also be the color of freshly sprouted plants.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So we can see that this is a bright, vivid green.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Whereas the other word for green, glass, is a natural muted green.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And that green could also refer to the color of grassy hills on an overcast day.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And so we can see the muted aspect of that color.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Another color that does this is the color red.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So the artificial color of red is jerag.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: But it can also be used to describe anger, so you can say someone's red with anger or jeriglafer, which suggests a sort of brightness to it or an intensity, and the natural color for red is rua, like the color of hair or of a fox.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: As a matter of fact, one of the words for fox, or I guess it's a phrase, is maldra rua, which means a red dog.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: You could also say shinnok.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: We have a few terms for black.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: One is just dov, which actually is in one of the names of Dublin, which would be dovlin.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: That is a general term for black.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: You can also say kir, which is sort of a shiny black like you would see on a beetle.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: As a matter of fact, the word for beetle is kirog.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: The color for yellow is buy, but it can also be conceived of as being like a brilliant brightness like you would see in a flame.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: I had one teacher say that buy is encompassing all of the colors you would see in a flame, suggesting again a sort of intensity to the color.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Some other colours of things you may see out and about.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Bon is white, dun is brown, ur is gold, ergod is silver, it is also the word for money, and Leah is grey.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: We have Korkra for purple, magenta for magenta, or rashta for orange, it's also the fruit, and balncherg for pink, which is white red.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: The word for blue is gutum.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And the word for colour itself is da which is a masculine noun, and plural would be da.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And if you wanted to know what color something was, you could ask the question cane dair which is what color is it?
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And to answer that, you could say taw and then the color air or taw color erhi if the thing is feminine.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Remember in the possession episode we talked about how prepositions combine with personal pronouns to make new words.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: That's what's going on here.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Air is on, which is R, and the pronoun for he, whereas er he is on plus the pronoun for she.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: So whatever the grammatical gender of the thing you are talking about, you will pick one of those in response.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: So can do a ta air What color is it?
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Ta Gutum air There's blue on it.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: And if the whatever we're talking about is a feminine thing, ta gutum erhi.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: I guess Shane Karja.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: This wasn't really a long one, but I think it sets you up nicely for the next episode, which I believe is adjectives.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: So Fecky Mehu, I will see you next time.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Slon Gafal
