- 1:09Speaker 2: Hollis, we are.
- 1:14Speaker 4: We're in a kind of a crazy situation when it
- 1:17Speaker 4: comes to when it comes to football season just got
- 1:22Speaker 4: started all kinds of bad news and I know that
- 1:26Speaker 4: you had mentioned to me about you know, you had
- 1:29Speaker 4: some questions and some conversation that you were interested in.
- 1:34Speaker 4: So I'm gonna I'm gonna turn it over to you
- 1:36Speaker 4: and let you kind of go with it and see
- 1:38Speaker 4: where we go.
- 1:38Speaker 5: So as we know, if you've been paying attention to
- 1:40Speaker 5: in the NFL, Miami Dolphin quarterback to a tongue of
- 1:44Speaker 5: via loa, I've been practicing that. As I was gonna say,
- 1:47Speaker 5: I had no shot at that to a tongue of biloa.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We'll just say two for right now.
- 1:53Speaker 5: But yeah, he has his third fourth concussion within the
- 1:58Speaker 5: past physical year. Not silly the season, but within the
- 2:01Speaker 5: past physical year. This one looked pretty bad. And you know,
- 2:06Speaker 5: just from and I guess what I was wondering from
- 2:09Speaker 5: you from a former player kind of just what are
- 2:13Speaker 5: your general thoughts?
- 2:14Speaker 2: I ask?
- 2:14Speaker 5: I'll ask some more specific questions, but just what are
- 2:17Speaker 5: your general thoughts when you see a guy who suffered
- 2:20Speaker 5: that many concussions within that short period of time?
- 2:24Speaker 2: What it? And and I and I've actually talked to
- 2:26Speaker 2: a friend of mine.
- 2:27Speaker 4: We had a brief conversation about about that specific situation,
- 2:33Speaker 4: not even just him, but that specific situation when you
- 2:37Speaker 4: are laying there on the turf sitting on the sidelines,
- 2:41Speaker 4: go back home, get ready for whatever's coming next. As
- 2:45Speaker 4: far as practice, it is the routine that you get
- 2:49Speaker 4: in and it is the love of the game that
- 2:51Speaker 4: that makes you say, Okay, I understand that I had
- 2:54Speaker 4: a concussion. I understand that you know the risk that
- 2:56Speaker 4: comes with it, But I still want to play. And
- 3:00Speaker 4: I think where two is. I think maybe hopefully he's
- 3:07Speaker 4: in that place of like, maybe this is not for
- 3:10Speaker 4: me to maybe I shouldn't continue this, Maybe this could
- 3:13Speaker 4: be a really bad situation for me going forward after
- 3:18Speaker 4: I'm done plenty.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Well, let's let's say it from this perspective, like being
- 3:22Speaker 5: I'm just trying to get you back in player mode,
- 3:25Speaker 5: you know, and let's if you can kind of jump
- 3:28Speaker 5: into maybe his mindset or his situation. I'll say that
- 3:31Speaker 5: that's a better, that's a better. Okay, that's better. But
- 3:35Speaker 5: so jumping in this situation you are starting, you got
- 3:39Speaker 5: a ton of money on the line. You know, I'm playing,
- 3:43Speaker 5: You're doing well, team is doing good, You're steadily improving.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Like, what are you doing? What are you thinking right now?
- 3:50Speaker 2: I'm playing? You know I'm playing.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Okay, you've already put now you know you put me
- 3:55Speaker 4: on an hour, So that's four weeks. I know I
- 3:57Speaker 4: got to be out four weeks. Hey man, if I'm
- 3:59Speaker 4: out for four weeks, I'm good. I'm gonna be ready
- 4:02Speaker 4: to play in spite of long term because I'm not
- 4:06Speaker 4: thinking long term. I'm thinking, you know, and especially if
- 4:10Speaker 4: you're having a good season. The key component for that is, hey,
- 4:14Speaker 4: maybe it's the super Bowl. Maybe I can be the
- 4:17Speaker 4: guy who can help get us to the super Bowl.
- 4:19Speaker 4: I can get us into the playoffs. All of those
- 4:21Speaker 4: kinds of things, All those things matter.
- 4:23Speaker 5: So are so in this situation? Are you just thinking
- 4:26Speaker 5: about the game? Are you not really considering health? I mean, like,
- 4:30Speaker 5: what's that thought process?
- 4:32Speaker 4: I'm sitting I'm sitting on the sidelines against the Lions,
- 4:37Speaker 4: and I don't have a clue of the play that
- 4:40Speaker 4: I just made.
- 4:42Speaker 2: But all I can think about is getting back in
- 4:46Speaker 2: the game.
- 4:47Speaker 4: And this is from your plan from my playing days,
- 4:50Speaker 4: Like I'm I'm I'm out, like I'm literally out on
- 4:54Speaker 4: the turf. And today, like I said, and I've probably
- 4:57Speaker 4: said this before, I don't know what happened short of
- 5:01Speaker 4: going back and looking at the film, I'm on the sidelines,
- 5:04Speaker 4: like I don't even remember the like the play, like
- 5:06Speaker 4: I remember going to make the tackle and then after that,
- 5:09Speaker 4: I'm on the sidelines smelling sauce.
- 5:11Speaker 2: How many fingers? Hey, I want to go back in
- 5:14Speaker 2: because there's something.
- 5:16Speaker 4: About there's something that is addictive to in playing football,
- 5:24Speaker 4: that you that you chase, that you want, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 4: And I don't want to try to compare it to
- 5:29Speaker 4: like some kind of major drug or anything like that,
- 5:31Speaker 4: but I'm just saying, like, you, you man, you want
- 5:34Speaker 4: to be on the field, and if and if and
- 5:37Speaker 4: you want to take that injury and push it behind you.
- 5:40Speaker 4: I'm playing with pins in my wrist. Doctor's telling me
- 5:44Speaker 4: if you if you try to catch yourself, you're gonna
- 5:46Speaker 4: break your form.
- 5:47Speaker 2: You know. The worst thing is tuck it and you
- 5:49Speaker 2: separate the shoulder, you know. So I got those options saying,
- 5:53Speaker 2: I'm like.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Okay, okay, So let's move it fast forward, maybe to
- 5:56Speaker 5: today's game, because I think today's game, not only are
- 5:59Speaker 5: you thinking about self preservation, but you're also thinking about
- 6:02Speaker 5: you know, you have the business side of it, and
- 6:04Speaker 5: I think that's a little bit more prevalent, Like if
- 6:07Speaker 5: you're thinking of it from a players perspective. From today's era,
- 6:11Speaker 5: how are you? Probably would the process still be the same.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Sitting in the seat talking to you and you asking
- 6:17Speaker 4: me that question, I would be thinking to myself like, Okay,
- 6:22Speaker 4: what are my financial what's my financial situation?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Can I actually leave the game and be okay? That
- 6:28Speaker 2: would be? That would now?
- 6:30Speaker 4: So that would cross your mind that sitting across the
- 6:33Speaker 4: seat from you.
- 6:34Speaker 5: No, no, no, I'm just saying, if if you jumped into
- 6:37Speaker 5: like being a player today with all the money, all
- 6:40Speaker 5: the endorsements, and all the things that our players are
- 6:43Speaker 5: privy to today, see, do you still have the same
- 6:47Speaker 5: mindset is that you're just trying to get back in
- 6:49Speaker 5: the game, trying to play?
- 6:50Speaker 2: Or do you does all the business stuff start to
- 6:52Speaker 2: way heavier?
- 6:53Speaker 4: See what I think the way that I'm I can
- 6:58Speaker 4: only picture it like.
- 7:02Speaker 2: It's it's gonna be the same.
- 7:04Speaker 4: If you're wanting to play, you don't want to leave
- 7:06Speaker 4: the game because you got You think there's more that
- 7:08Speaker 4: you got into the that you can give to the game,
- 7:10Speaker 4: and you don't want to leave it.
- 7:12Speaker 2: But you also understand the.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Risk that you're taking, and I think you're gonna have
- 7:18Speaker 4: more people telling you to step away from the game.
- 7:22Speaker 2: You got to take care of yourself. You got to.
- 7:23Speaker 2: You gotta be more careful for yourself.
- 7:25Speaker 4: But you me sitting in that situation, I'm thinking, Okay,
- 7:31Speaker 4: I got four weeks. That's that's plenty of time for
- 7:34Speaker 4: me to recover. And I'm right back in this. I'm
- 7:36Speaker 4: right back in the seat. Yeah, I'm thinking, I'm right
- 7:39Speaker 4: back into the seat.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Because then we got to remember, too, it just got
- 7:42Speaker 5: that two hundred million to it. And I think we
- 7:44Speaker 5: discussed earlier that you know, depended on how he left,
- 7:48Speaker 5: if he was like medically forced too, or if he
- 7:50Speaker 5: stepped away, that would.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Depend on that.
- 7:52Speaker 4: That would dictate how much of that money, if not
- 7:55Speaker 4: all of it, he can get. Yeah, and I think
- 7:58Speaker 4: he gets to keep the signing BDUs regardless of Oh yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 2: The bonus is once you once you sign, the bonus
- 8:02Speaker 2: is yours. You know.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Now, if it's not any kind of playing bonus or
- 8:06Speaker 4: anything but a signing bonus, you sign, they're obligated to
- 8:09Speaker 4: that amount.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Okay. So so that's that's that part of it has
- 8:12Speaker 2: already set.
- 8:13Speaker 5: And I'm sure there's some sort of insurance and all
- 8:15Speaker 5: that other stuff as well. So I guess my question
- 8:19Speaker 5: is and kind of moving on from that, are we
- 8:22Speaker 5: going to get to a point where we, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 5: regulate that sort of these these injuries out of the game.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I don't. I don't. I don't think that you can.
- 8:35Speaker 4: You've changed how you can hit, but you can't you
- 8:40Speaker 4: can't change how these spontaneous situations that happen in the game.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Like so you're a quarterback, so you're you're standing in
- 8:52Speaker 4: the pocket with with the ball. Somebody comes and hits
- 8:55Speaker 4: you face on, but you go straight down to the
- 8:59Speaker 4: ground and the first.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Thing that hits is your head and that's happened to it. Yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 2: and that's that's that's concussion opportunity too.
- 9:06Speaker 4: It doesn't have to be me hitting you and you
- 9:08Speaker 4: hitting me in the head, us being head to head.
- 9:11Speaker 4: It's head to knee, it's head to the grounds, it's
- 9:14Speaker 4: all of that.
- 9:15Speaker 5: And I think people outside of the game, maybe who
- 9:18Speaker 5: aren't familiar or never really played, they don't really understand
- 9:21Speaker 5: that part of it. Like to me, the game is
- 9:23Speaker 5: the game, and it doesn't really matter how much you regulated.
- 9:27Speaker 5: It doesn't matter you know, what rules you put put
- 9:30Speaker 5: in place, You're not going to prevent these sort of
- 9:32Speaker 5: injuries from happening because like you said, even in two,
- 9:35Speaker 5: even in this last instances to it, like was running.
- 9:38Speaker 5: I mean he's running as hard as he can go,
- 9:39Speaker 5: trying to get to make the play, and he actually
- 9:41Speaker 5: runs into somebody's thine abdom area at full speed. These
- 9:45Speaker 5: guys are brick hard, you know what I'm saying. And
- 9:47Speaker 5: that guy's running at you. Yeah, and it happened that way.
- 9:50Speaker 5: So it wasn't helm and Helmet wasn't some you know,
- 9:52Speaker 5: violent hit and.
- 9:53Speaker 4: You can and and the buddy that I was talking to.
- 9:57Speaker 2: One of the things that.
- 10:00Speaker 4: There's a realization of football is it's different than anything
- 10:05Speaker 4: else because it's you can you can make a case
- 10:08Speaker 4: that nobody's trying to make a pass in deference, nobody's
- 10:12Speaker 4: trying to have a personal foul in the manner in
- 10:15Speaker 4: which they hit you.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay, you know what I'm saying.
- 10:18Speaker 4: What happens though, in the process of the game, the
- 10:22Speaker 4: movement and the and the instant that you make contact,
- 10:25Speaker 4: where you make contact where you thought you were going
- 10:27Speaker 4: to make contact.
- 10:28Speaker 2: What are you going to do when I'm coming to
- 10:30Speaker 2: hit you, you're coming down, you're coming down, or you
- 10:32Speaker 2: going on changes.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Where all that contact is or you're running at me
- 10:38Speaker 4: and I'm running at you, and you hit me, and
- 10:41Speaker 4: I'm like thinking, you know, well, shoot, I thought I
- 10:43Speaker 4: was going to make the tack on.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Next thing, I know, I'm falling back and where's my
- 10:46Speaker 2: head going. It's going to the turf.
- 10:48Speaker 5: And so okay, So let me ask you a different question,
- 10:52Speaker 5: kind of going back to because I heard you say
- 10:54Speaker 5: you talk to a buddy yours, I'm assuming that's a
- 10:57Speaker 5: former player. Yes, so see some of your contemporaries maybe
- 11:02Speaker 5: not doing so good mentally.
- 11:04Speaker 2: We don't have to mention names, uhing like that?
- 11:06Speaker 5: Does that change how you think about you know, if
- 11:10Speaker 5: you continue playing, if you sustain all these various hits.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I think that.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Because I mean, some guys are mistake and yeah, there's
- 11:20Speaker 4: a lot of guys that are that are messed up,
- 11:22Speaker 4: and there's quite I've had quite a few friends that
- 11:25Speaker 4: that have you know, passed on because of that. Now,
- 11:30Speaker 4: with that being said, you know, if you ask any
- 11:35Speaker 4: one of those guys, even guys who are struggling with
- 11:40Speaker 4: you know, any kind of results of CTE, and ask
- 11:44Speaker 4: them would you play again? They will tell you yes
- 11:49Speaker 4: with no hesitation. Well, I don't think the question is
- 11:51Speaker 4: playing again.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I'm saying, like.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Tua suffering all those concussions in this shorter period of
- 11:58Speaker 5: time in his NFL career, and and what we don't know.
- 12:02Speaker 5: We don't know how many he suffered in high excuse
- 12:04Speaker 5: me college. We certainly don't know how many he suffered
- 12:07Speaker 5: in high school and beyond. Because that's right practice and
- 12:09Speaker 5: all that. I think, Well, let me just say it
- 12:13Speaker 5: this way.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Me as a former player, me knowing what I seeing,
- 12:17Speaker 4: what I've seen with with other friends and former players
- 12:21Speaker 4: and players in different places, I would say if I
- 12:25Speaker 4: were to sit down with him, I'd be like, man, look.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I get it. I get what you're going for.
- 12:33Speaker 4: You want to be as good as great as you
- 12:36Speaker 4: possibly can be at this game, at your position. You
- 12:39Speaker 4: want the notoriety that comes with it, you want the
- 12:41Speaker 4: money that comes with it. The question is are you
- 12:44Speaker 4: prepared to not to be able to enjoy any of it.
- 12:50Speaker 4: That's a reality, right, Yeah, that's kind of change.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that sort of backs you into it.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Going right, Because at the end of the day, no one,
- 13:01Speaker 4: no one could have no one would have thought to
- 13:03Speaker 4: give me that simplicity of saying, Okay, look, you're sitting
- 13:06Speaker 4: on the sideline.
- 13:07Speaker 2: You know they didn't.
- 13:08Speaker 4: You can see the three fingers you didn't already had
- 13:11Speaker 4: the little ammonia that's kind of got you back on
- 13:13Speaker 4: you don't remember to play. But but do you want
- 13:16Speaker 4: to go back here in hindsight, now, I'll go ahead
- 13:21Speaker 4: and sit the rest of this one out if that's
- 13:23Speaker 4: gonna help my memory today. I would have been willing
- 13:26Speaker 4: to sit that out.
- 13:27Speaker 5: But but if you say that, do you know the
- 13:30Speaker 5: consequences of saying something like that, yes, because basically in
- 13:34Speaker 5: your area, you.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Couldn't say that. No what in your ara, there's.
- 13:37Speaker 4: No way, there's no way, I'm not And see coaching
- 13:41Speaker 4: at State, one of the things that I didn't care
- 13:43Speaker 4: if a player wanted to play. My thoughts were, I
- 13:45Speaker 4: don't care if you want to play, if you had
- 13:47Speaker 4: any kind of head injury, you had any kind of
- 13:50Speaker 4: if that was an issue, but you wasn't playing.
- 13:52Speaker 2: You just you're just not playing Because I know. I
- 13:56Speaker 2: know that I played when I shouldn't have played. Yea,
- 13:59Speaker 2: And I know that somebody should have known. Somebody should
- 14:02Speaker 2: have shut me, somebody should have said something.
- 14:04Speaker 5: I just look at like, and again I'm sort of
- 14:08Speaker 5: comparing apples to oranges, right, I look at somebody like
- 14:11Speaker 5: James lights Alt Tony. He was a boxer during the nineties, Middleway, you,
- 14:16Speaker 5: wealth Away and all that sort of really really good boxer.
- 14:19Speaker 5: They showed a comparison of him talking at the beginning
- 14:22Speaker 5: of his career. He was a played quarterback when he
- 14:24Speaker 5: was in high school, played football, and he was fluid,
- 14:27Speaker 5: he was you know, he was very lucidy. He had
- 14:29Speaker 5: a good mouthpiece. And they showed him today talking and
- 14:33Speaker 5: it just sounds like two different people. You can see
- 14:36Speaker 5: the cognitive decline. So and I say that to say, like,
- 14:40Speaker 5: if I'm too you probably made a boatload of money
- 14:44Speaker 5: by now, you'll have a tremendous opportunities to coach, to
- 14:49Speaker 5: stay around the game, to be a broadcaster, do podcasts.
- 14:52Speaker 5: You'll have opportunities to still work inside the game. Maybe
- 14:56Speaker 5: those opportunities that you didn't have during that time.
- 15:00Speaker 2: We didn't have social media all this. It was like
- 15:02Speaker 2: limited spots.
- 15:03Speaker 5: So I don't know if I would want to continue
- 15:07Speaker 5: to play and risk my mental health because again we're
- 15:10Speaker 5: not just talking about.
- 15:11Speaker 4: A slow down cognitive ability. If you get so many
- 15:15Speaker 4: hits to the head, you don't know how that's going
- 15:17Speaker 4: to train your your brain structure. You don't know that
- 15:20Speaker 4: you may have some onset of some mental illness. You
- 15:23Speaker 4: don't know that part of it. Right, it's the guys
- 15:26Speaker 4: that's left the game that was great. You look at
- 15:28Speaker 4: a guy like Junior, say, nobody in the world would
- 15:30Speaker 4: have ever thought that would have been the result. Right,
- 15:32Speaker 4: So I don't know if I would be willing to
- 15:37Speaker 4: risk that. And then also I don't know how you
- 15:41Speaker 4: play with rectus abandonment. I don't know how you continue
- 15:43Speaker 4: to play just free. But again, we're.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Talking about documented and I say that I think it
- 15:51Speaker 5: was the fourth This is the fourth concussion within a
- 15:54Speaker 5: physical year.
- 15:55Speaker 2: That makes that makes no sense.
- 15:57Speaker 4: And we're not talking about a guy who just got
- 15:59Speaker 4: his bill. We're not talking about those Look, you.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Know what I'm saying. Sometimes you got your belt, run
- 16:04Speaker 5: you walk to the sidelines. We're talking to guy that
- 16:06Speaker 5: was good hit.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Right, We're talking about a guy I'll just sit out
- 16:11Speaker 4: the game, you'll be back your practice, money will get
- 16:13Speaker 4: back rolling. We're talking about a guy who's on the
- 16:15Speaker 4: sideline when his hands in a very strange position like
- 16:20Speaker 4: he was, you know, suffering, and and and again, I
- 16:26Speaker 4: think when I want to keep going back because that
- 16:30Speaker 4: mindset of who's gonna take the game away from me?
- 16:38Speaker 4: Players back in those days, I'm not gonna let you
- 16:41Speaker 4: take the game away from it.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I think players still think like that today too as well.
- 16:44Speaker 4: But and what's crazy to me the money that they
- 16:49Speaker 4: can make now, or the money that they've made now,
- 16:53Speaker 4: the moment that you start to tell me, the moment
- 16:55Speaker 4: I start feeling like, you know, I've taken too many
- 16:59Speaker 4: of these kinds of hits.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I'd like to think.
- 17:04Speaker 4: That I would I would know when it would be
- 17:06Speaker 4: time to walk away. And I think that decisions easier
- 17:09Speaker 4: with one hundred million in the back. I think so too,
- 17:12Speaker 4: because you like you look like guys like Aaron Donaldson. Right,
- 17:16Speaker 4: he just retired. Aaron Donaldson probably could have played another
- 17:18Speaker 4: three or four like productive seasons that d line and he.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Just walks away.
- 17:23Speaker 4: Right that that that wasn't necessarily happening in your day,
- 17:27Speaker 4: particularly when you were at that higher level. Everybody wanted
- 17:32Speaker 4: to be able to say, you know, when they're done,
- 17:35Speaker 4: I played ten years.
- 17:37Speaker 2: You know, I played eleven. Ye, you might have had
- 17:39Speaker 2: to play that in order to bank up.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, oh, there's no question you legitimately needed to
- 17:45Speaker 4: get those kinds of years. So every season, no matter
- 17:48Speaker 4: what the what the impact that football was playing on
- 17:52Speaker 4: you physically, mentally, emotionally, you still had to love it.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's I think football.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Is the craziest sport to love simply because.
- 18:07Speaker 2: The longer you.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Play it, the harder you play it, it doesn't always
- 18:13Speaker 4: benefit you.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's I think that's a lot of
- 18:15Speaker 2: sports though.
- 18:16Speaker 5: I think if you look at you know, and I
- 18:18Speaker 5: always say this, they talking about like football is a context.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Football is a collision sports. It's not a contact sports
- 18:23Speaker 5: beyond contact.
- 18:24Speaker 2: But even when you.
- 18:25Speaker 5: Look like those old basketball players like Kenny to just Smith,
- 18:28Speaker 5: they have like those knockkne they'll have those like knee
- 18:30Speaker 5: and problems.
- 18:31Speaker 4: They they'll have like deformities almost And I say that light,
- 18:35Speaker 4: I don't. I don't say that disparagingly. They'll have They'll
- 18:38Speaker 4: just look the body be shaped a little different because
- 18:41Speaker 4: how hard they went. So let me ask you two
- 18:43Speaker 4: more questions on this, Like and again I'm not trying
- 18:46Speaker 4: to get in your pocket in there like that, but
- 18:48Speaker 4: far as NFL retirement, like what does that look like?
- 18:52Speaker 4: Far as like the retirement pension plans and different things
- 18:55Speaker 4: like that, like.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Does you have to be a like fifty five sixty
- 18:59Speaker 5: to get it? Like how much you getting based off
- 19:01Speaker 5: the number of years? Or is that just strictly your
- 19:03Speaker 5: own investments?
- 19:04Speaker 2: No, it's it's it's based it's based off of.
- 19:07Speaker 5: So every player gets this. If you every player can
- 19:09Speaker 5: qualify for this.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Yeah, everybody, everybody can qualify after at one point it
- 19:15Speaker 4: was three years and three games, okay, and I think
- 19:22Speaker 4: it may be it may it may have gone to
- 19:24Speaker 4: four to four games that you have to be on
- 19:28Speaker 4: an active roster, okay, so that that qualifies you for
- 19:32Speaker 4: the minimum benefits okay, So and as and and according
- 19:38Speaker 4: to X number of years that you play, the more
- 19:41Speaker 4: the more retirement you get.
- 19:43Speaker 2: You know, you heard it was like, I mean the
- 19:45Speaker 2: way we've always heard it.
- 19:46Speaker 5: Maybe I need to do my research on it, but
- 19:48Speaker 5: it was like a certain you get a certain dollar
- 19:50Speaker 5: amount per year that you played.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Now, yes, your monthly retirement.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Yes, like so if you if you if you take
- 19:56Speaker 4: your retirement, it's a it's it's a it's a monthly
- 19:59Speaker 4: it's a monthly out. And can you draw that you
- 20:03Speaker 4: can you can draw it as I think as early
- 20:06Speaker 4: as fifty five. And of course if you wait till sixty,
- 20:09Speaker 4: if you wait till sixty five, it's pretty much, you know,
- 20:13Speaker 4: structured the same way for everybody else.
- 20:15Speaker 2: The longer that you don't the longer you don't take it,
- 20:17Speaker 2: the more that it can be okay.
- 20:20Speaker 4: But you know, but as you know, like for most
- 20:23Speaker 4: players back in the day, you know, I know that
- 20:27Speaker 4: I know players who were literally you know, couldn't wait
- 20:30Speaker 4: to get to it, like you know, they needed to
- 20:33Speaker 4: get to it, you know.
- 20:34Speaker 2: And but again.
- 20:39Speaker 4: When you go back and you start to look at
- 20:41Speaker 4: when you look at football in the sixties, seventies, early seventies,
- 20:48Speaker 4: for sure, Man, those dudes were just playing ball. Yeah,
- 20:52Speaker 4: I mean that was a different day. Yeah, they were
- 20:53Speaker 4: just they were just they were simply playing ball. They
- 20:55Speaker 4: weren't there was no there was no luxury of I'm
- 21:00Speaker 4: to get out of here and I'm going to be
- 21:02Speaker 4: set for life.
- 21:03Speaker 5: You know, it wasn't this the proven business model that
- 21:07Speaker 5: it became in the eighties right now, And you.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Know, eighty three they they they created a minimum wage
- 21:16Speaker 4: of forty thousand. Now, imagine you're on a football roster
- 21:21Speaker 4: and you're getting paid forty thousand and.
- 21:26Speaker 2: You know, and people would talk about, well, you know,
- 21:28Speaker 2: how did he go broke? Well, what you what you
- 21:33Speaker 2: thought he was making is not really what he was making.
- 21:36Speaker 4: And then when you start to look at you know,
- 21:39Speaker 4: there's not a there's not a person even on a
- 21:41Speaker 4: practice squad making that type of money they're making that.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's they're well into the six digits
- 21:50Speaker 4: on the practice squad. And so you know, it's football
- 21:55Speaker 4: is is a benefit if you can do it and
- 21:59Speaker 4: wherever it is that you do it. But I think
- 22:03Speaker 4: when you when we start talking about the injuries, we
- 22:07Speaker 4: start talking about, you know, the.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Situations that that on the younger.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Level, especially that the game, the game is it's different there.
- 22:21Speaker 4: You know, it's different because I'll make the case that
- 22:25Speaker 4: part of the reasons that I think the young it
- 22:28Speaker 4: impacts young kids, you know, the injuries that come up,
- 22:32Speaker 4: it's just because the development isn't there yet, you know,
- 22:36Speaker 4: and they're making kind of the type of contact that
- 22:41Speaker 4: your body's not used to.
- 22:42Speaker 5: And I got a question on that too. But just
- 22:44Speaker 5: to clarify, so forty thousand and nineteen eighty three will
- 22:48Speaker 5: be valued at one hundred and twenty two thousand dollars today,
- 22:51Speaker 5: so that was pretty decent money back in the day.
- 22:54Speaker 2: It wasn't bad. It wasn't bad use but you have
- 22:57Speaker 2: some bag.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, that the benefit of that rationale there is,
- 23:05Speaker 4: you know, things were cheaper and all those kinds of things.
- 23:08Speaker 4: But but I don't I'm not I'm not really sold
- 23:12Speaker 4: on that one.
- 23:14Speaker 5: All right, So let me ask you final a question
- 23:16Speaker 5: on this. Like, you are a youth coach. You obviously
- 23:20Speaker 5: coach at the collegiate level. You coach at the high
- 23:22Speaker 5: school level, and one thing you were always pretty particular
- 23:25Speaker 5: on was equipment. So do you think with like the
- 23:29Speaker 5: guardian cabs and new technology that that may.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Be able to lessen some of the.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Injuries, particularly when it comes to concussions.
- 23:39Speaker 4: I would make I would go this far, okay if
- 23:44Speaker 4: I'm if I'm in the political realm, hint, hint, I
- 23:50Speaker 4: would I would start to talk about youth sports and
- 23:58Speaker 4: those caps being like mandatory because these little kids don't
- 24:08Speaker 4: they fall and can hit their head.
- 24:10Speaker 5: See it's just see, that's a political land mind that
- 24:14Speaker 5: I would never step on because I don't to then
- 24:17Speaker 5: what we just said about two of it's a point
- 24:20Speaker 5: where it's you know, a six year old is not
- 24:23Speaker 5: necessarily going to give another six year old some concussion
- 24:26Speaker 5: by hitting hard, right, that's not necessarily probably gonna be
- 24:29Speaker 5: the case. But to our point, if you're running full
- 24:31Speaker 5: speed at me, I'm running full speed at.
- 24:33Speaker 2: You, even at six years old, my head hits your knee.
- 24:36Speaker 4: I don't know if a guardian cap or anything else
- 24:38Speaker 4: protects that, or if I fall get tackled a certain way,
- 24:41Speaker 4: my head hits the turf. But what we do know
- 24:43Speaker 4: for a fact already, Yeah, okay that without it there's
- 24:49Speaker 4: an issue.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I mean maybe so there's not a maybe so because
- 24:54Speaker 2: that's the conversation that we're having.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Well you mean with the like the guardian caps in
- 24:57Speaker 4: different I'm saying, without the Guardian cap, we know there's issue.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. So to add it, what harm are
- 25:05Speaker 2: we doing?
- 25:05Speaker 5: I mean, you may be writing that in I just
- 25:08Speaker 5: think I'm not sure. And again I'm just I would
- 25:11Speaker 5: probably set myself up, but I'm just not sure that
- 25:15Speaker 5: kids ought to be playing tackle football. Honestly, Well, I'm
- 25:18Speaker 5: not sure that you know a kid that's five six,
- 25:22Speaker 5: seven eight nine should be playing tackle football.
- 25:25Speaker 2: See, and I'll I'm not.
- 25:28Speaker 4: I do I do use football, okay, and so, and
- 25:34Speaker 4: we're actually practicing today. And I would say this to
- 25:42Speaker 4: that comment. We didn't start when I when I was playing.
- 25:47Speaker 4: We started at seven.
- 25:48Speaker 2: That's when we started. Yet and to me, when you
- 25:53Speaker 2: start talking about you know, four and five, you know,
- 25:59Speaker 2: I I.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Think that if they want to play football, I think
- 26:04Speaker 4: that's I think that's flag whether and I and I'm
- 26:08Speaker 4: cool with flag with you with with.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Equipment on so that they're so that they're used to it.
- 26:13Speaker 5: I'm just no, I'm saying anybody probably under about maybe
- 26:17Speaker 5: eleven twelve, I'm not sure that you ought to be
- 26:20Speaker 5: playing tackle football. Again, I'm not necessarily opposed to it.
- 26:23Speaker 5: I just don't know, and I haven't done enough research
- 26:26Speaker 5: to say, but I'm just not sure. Again, outside of us,
- 26:31Speaker 5: and we've talked this to death, and I don't want
- 26:32Speaker 5: to go down this road, but outside there being some
- 26:35Speaker 5: you know, regulations at a county state, like a governmental
- 26:42Speaker 5: body where you can actually regulate these things, right, because again,
- 26:47Speaker 5: youth sports have done a great job of they don't
- 26:50Speaker 5: practice as much as we did, they don't hit as
- 26:52Speaker 5: much as we did.
- 26:53Speaker 2: There's regulations on that, and they try.
- 26:55Speaker 5: To teach you heads of football, which is awesome and
- 26:57Speaker 5: great and that's what they should be doing. But even
- 27:01Speaker 5: with heads of football, you're not going to prevent an
- 27:03Speaker 5: injury like to a hand.
- 27:04Speaker 2: That's not about heads of football. That's just football.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the reality of the football. And we get
- 27:11Speaker 4: ready to go to break but I want to say
- 27:12Speaker 4: this before we go.
- 27:14Speaker 6: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously
- 27:17Speaker 6: injured in a car accident, trucking accident, or.

- 27:49Speaker 4: that they that they are at risk. And and and
- 27:55Speaker 4: and again. I don't want to hurt youth football, you know,
- 27:58Speaker 4: at all, But I'm thinking that we could. I think
- 28:01Speaker 4: there's a reason for us to consider trying.
- 28:03Speaker 2: To fix it. Yeah, I got you. All right.

- 29:09Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back and we've we've
- 29:13Speaker 4: spent the first I guess half of the show.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Talking about football and its injuries. I don't know. I
- 29:27Speaker 2: don't know, Hollas.
- 29:28Speaker 4: As we wrap this up, like I know that you know,
- 29:32Speaker 4: I know how football has impacted me in my life
- 29:36Speaker 4: and and the and the things that I have to
- 29:40Speaker 4: do to do to function as normal as I possibly
- 29:45Speaker 4: can be.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I just think that, you know, football is a great game, but.
- 29:50Speaker 4: I think that I think that we we we need
- 29:53Speaker 4: we do need people to to step in it. And
- 29:58Speaker 4: to your point about not really like to speak on
- 30:01Speaker 4: some of this kind of stuff, I think the people
- 30:04Speaker 4: who should be talking about this stuff should be guys
- 30:06Speaker 4: who have formerly played and I think that should there
- 30:10Speaker 4: should be a committee built around players who have played
- 30:14Speaker 4: the game to make these decisions. It's kind of like,
- 30:18Speaker 4: you know, not that we're going to go here, but
- 30:21Speaker 4: like like when you start talking about transferring, you should
- 30:24Speaker 4: you start talking about all these different kind of rules
- 30:26Speaker 4: and regulations and things that you should.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Be able to do.
- 30:28Speaker 4: I'm not sure that that is, you know, a suit
- 30:31Speaker 4: and ties the person that makes that up. You know,
- 30:33Speaker 4: I think that, like, why wouldn't you have a committee
- 30:36Speaker 4: and say, Okay, when we're gonna talk when we're gonna
- 30:38Speaker 4: deal with sports, we're gonna have a sports committee, and
- 30:41Speaker 4: we want to get the impact what we think these
- 30:44Speaker 4: kinds of changes could be from these players, these people
- 30:49Speaker 4: that are former players, because a lot I mean, you know,
- 30:52Speaker 4: and I hate to say this, but you know, some
- 30:54Speaker 4: of these issues, the whole transfer issue starts because a
- 30:58Speaker 4: dad wants somebody that to to participate in a in
- 31:04Speaker 4: a sport when they change schools, so changes the whole rule,
- 31:07Speaker 4: That changes the whole dynamics, the whole landscape.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Of sportsney work. Yeah, that's so.
- 31:13Speaker 4: I think that's I think that's part of I think
- 31:16Speaker 4: that's part.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Of the the issue.
- 31:19Speaker 5: I mean, while we're having these I would agree with that,
- 31:21Speaker 5: and I think that you know it, when we're talking
- 31:26Speaker 5: about rule change, I think one of the things that
- 31:28Speaker 5: hurts football is that it's it's too they change rules
- 31:32Speaker 5: to they sort of nitpicking football, where as a sport
- 31:36Speaker 5: like baseball, they don't move fast enough.
- 31:39Speaker 2: What are starting to catch up.
- 31:40Speaker 5: But I think that if we did have like a
- 31:42Speaker 5: body it needs to be comprised of a variety of
- 31:46Speaker 5: individuals so you can get up a lot of viewpoints.
- 31:50Speaker 5: And I think it also needs to be maybe not
- 31:52Speaker 5: associated like its own association, maybe if nothing else, to
- 31:57Speaker 5: just make rule recommendations.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Well, so it's not it's not.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Like working in the interests of college football or anybody else.
- 32:03Speaker 5: It's it's it's its own entity. It's separate, it's and
- 32:08Speaker 5: it's just given an analysis and it's making the rule
- 32:12Speaker 5: recommendations and putting it out to the public.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Who would okay, so, and you're saying who should be
- 32:19Speaker 4: who would be part of that?
- 32:20Speaker 5: If I would say, you know, you would have former coaches,
- 32:22Speaker 5: former players, you have referees, you would have doctors, you
- 32:26Speaker 5: would have mental health, behavior health professional lawyers, judges, politicians,
- 32:32Speaker 5: and just maybe and I would say moms and dads
- 32:36Speaker 5: as well. So you would just have a you know,
- 32:39Speaker 5: a very diverse board of individuals who are approaching this
- 32:42Speaker 5: thing from a different perspective, very various perspectives in order
- 32:46Speaker 5: to you know, flush out some of these rules. And
- 32:49Speaker 5: and I think that what that would do it would
- 32:52Speaker 5: let everybody not necessarily have a voice at the table,
- 32:55Speaker 5: but you would hear all the different concerns. So because
- 32:59Speaker 5: sometimes we're not looking at it from you know, we
- 33:01Speaker 5: may not look at it from a player standpoint. You're
- 33:03Speaker 5: just looking at it from like you said, a suit
- 33:05Speaker 5: or the exactly right.
- 33:06Speaker 4: And and again sometimes those those those whole the whole
- 33:09Speaker 4: start of these situations are created because somebody is wanting
- 33:13Speaker 4: to do something for their.
- 33:14Speaker 5: Child, yeah, their child, or their interest the exactly so
- 33:19Speaker 5: so we got we got your boys, the thunder and
- 33:22Speaker 5: heard they're going to see them buck eyes.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Could they pull it off? You know? Marshall.
- 33:31Speaker 4: Marshall has had that, you know, especially with with the coach,
- 33:37Speaker 4: they have been able to pull off some games that
- 33:40Speaker 4: you would absolutely.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Just know for a fact they are not going to win. Right.
- 33:49Speaker 4: But if I'm Ohio State, okay, and I'm I'm I'm
- 33:54Speaker 4: I'm the coach there, I'm telling you that these this
- 33:59Speaker 4: team that Marshall thundering Herd team has beaten this team,
- 34:04Speaker 4: that team.
- 34:06Speaker 2: So they're gonna.
- 34:08Speaker 4: Come in here and assume as soon that they got
- 34:11Speaker 4: they got that they got a chance, because can't nobody
- 34:13Speaker 4: tell them that they don't have a chance.
- 34:15Speaker 5: I think like this is one of those weeks in
- 34:17Speaker 5: which you just pop in the tape Marshall versus Notre
- 34:21Speaker 5: Dame Press play.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Let's just watch you guys.
- 34:24Speaker 5: Know the Dame was ranked all that Virginia Tech Marshall.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Let's watch you, guys, if you.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Might be the only games that I've watched.
- 34:32Speaker 5: That's the only thing I'm watching because I think physically,
- 34:35Speaker 5: I think obviously Marshall's gonna be a little bit outmatched.
- 34:38Speaker 5: But I don't think and again I'm not sure. I
- 34:41Speaker 5: don't think Ohio State, based off of that, is gonna
- 34:44Speaker 5: come and sleep walk through this game. I can't see
- 34:46Speaker 5: that based on Marshall's record, how they do that, because
- 34:50Speaker 5: that's the reputation on coach Huff.
- 34:52Speaker 2: He'll win the big one, but he'll lose the little ones.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Yes, and and and and again there would be there.
- 35:00Speaker 4: There's no reason that I would have ever thought in
- 35:02Speaker 4: my four years at Marshall that Marshall would even be
- 35:05Speaker 4: playing some of these teams more or less winning. Okay,
- 35:10Speaker 4: and that magic.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Is something that I think.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Sales kids to come to Marshall. And what happens is
- 35:24Speaker 4: you have some some major D one players on that roster. Yeah,
- 35:30Speaker 4: you know, like you know, coach he put that out there,
- 35:35Speaker 4: and and so you you want to play against those
- 35:39Speaker 4: guys you wanted because you know that you belong there.
- 35:42Speaker 2: You could play there if you really wanted to.
- 35:44Speaker 4: So I think I think one of the one of
- 35:47Speaker 4: the things that I think that coach Huff has done
- 35:49Speaker 4: for Marshall is is he has built a confidence in
- 35:54Speaker 4: games where they should not have a chance to win,
- 36:00Speaker 4: and they come out and win it. Ye do I
- 36:03Speaker 4: can I say that I'm gonna I think that they're
- 36:05Speaker 4: gonna win.
- 36:06Speaker 2: There's absolutely no way I can say. I don't know, man.
- 36:09Speaker 5: I think I think if it's like week one, I
- 36:13Speaker 5: think if it's week one, week two, where you know,
- 36:17Speaker 5: maybe you just haven't had the time, you're excited to play,
- 36:20Speaker 5: you just looking You're looking at Marshall, but really you're
- 36:22Speaker 5: looking at you know, Ohio State, You're looking at Notre Dame.
- 36:25Speaker 5: You're looking at if Ohio State was kind of looking
- 36:27Speaker 5: past whoever else they had to play. But I think
- 36:30Speaker 5: it's because you're getting a little I think this is
- 36:32Speaker 5: the fourth week of the season, you're a little bit
- 36:33Speaker 5: more settled in. And like I said, I think if
- 36:36Speaker 5: I'm the coaches that were watching Virginia Tech Marshall, were
- 36:39Speaker 5: watching Notre Dame Marshall and if you come here slip
- 36:42Speaker 5: and you come here sleeping, this is what's gonna happen
- 36:44Speaker 5: to you. So I think their ambitions is bigger. So again,
- 36:48Speaker 5: I would be hard pressed the best bet against Ohio State.
- 36:51Speaker 2: But you know, you never know what Marshall can do.
- 36:54Speaker 2: So so.
- 36:56Speaker 4: But but and I also say that with the caveat
- 36:58Speaker 4: that you know, the games that I've watched for Marshall's
- 37:02Speaker 4: just the offensive play just has not been there.
- 37:04Speaker 2: It's been a struggle offensively. I was gonna, I was
- 37:07Speaker 2: gonna go there because I don't know if I've seen yet.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Marshall being dominant on the offensive side, and I and
- 37:20Speaker 4: I do think I'm not sure they have come up
- 37:23Speaker 4: to where to the level.
- 37:25Speaker 2: In which they need to be on defense.
- 37:28Speaker 4: I think it's good, but I think you got you know,
- 37:31Speaker 4: you got secondary issues and you know so so now
- 37:37Speaker 4: if there's any opportunity that you can throw the ball
- 37:39Speaker 4: and you can run the ball, now you're now you're
- 37:42Speaker 4: in Now you're really in trouble.
- 37:45Speaker 5: And I think a game like this again, you never
- 37:48Speaker 5: want to again because Marshall's proven us wrong a few
- 37:51Speaker 5: times now. But all in all, I think this is
- 37:54Speaker 5: a game you do. You want to stay in, you
- 37:56Speaker 5: don't want to get blown out. You want to pick
- 37:58Speaker 5: up some points. You want to have some production in
- 38:01Speaker 5: the game, even if it's twenty one to fifty something
- 38:04Speaker 5: or twenty one forty something, you know what I mean. Yes,
- 38:06Speaker 5: you want to have production. You want to show a
- 38:09Speaker 5: little something in this game.
- 38:10Speaker 4: And I don't even care personally me, I don't even
- 38:13Speaker 4: care if that's the same old state.
- 38:15Speaker 2: They they.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Put some guys in, some of their second strings, guys
- 38:21Speaker 4: in to go in and play, so they're subbing and
- 38:24Speaker 4: we still score. Yeah, I'm fine because what that's telling
- 38:29Speaker 4: me is that my team is not gonna quit.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I like that. Yeah.
- 38:33Speaker 4: So to me, I think if if there's anything that
- 38:35Speaker 4: I think Marshall has the opportunity to prove, play that
- 38:40Speaker 4: game all the way out. Yeah, play that game from
- 38:44Speaker 4: the start of the clock to the last.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Tick of it, and play hard and score on the
- 38:50Speaker 2: last drive. Yeah you know. And and then.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I'm gonna so let me switch it back to let's
- 38:57Speaker 4: talk to you about the coach. You know, people are saying, okay,
- 39:01Speaker 4: so if this game gets out of hand, this should be,
- 39:03Speaker 4: this should be you know, Huff could be in in trouble.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Is this the game you really want to measure? Is
- 39:10Speaker 4: this because I don't see I'm with you like I'm no,
- 39:14Speaker 4: this is the game that you should be happy that
- 39:17Speaker 4: that that maybe that they schedule you know, I don't
- 39:20Speaker 4: know why, you know, maybe, but yeah, we just really
- 39:23Speaker 4: probably money. So that benefits the future for Marshall. So
- 39:31Speaker 4: you take that loss and move on. You probably don't
- 39:34Speaker 4: even want to watch the film. If you lose it bad,
- 39:36Speaker 4: you're probably not gonna watch the film. You're getting right
- 39:38Speaker 4: in the next week.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's one game.
- 39:40Speaker 5: So and I and if I'm coaching, I would want
- 39:43Speaker 5: to again obviously. You you come into the game, you
- 39:45Speaker 5: want to.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Want to win. Nobody, no, no player does not want
- 39:48Speaker 2: to win.
- 39:48Speaker 5: But if you see it's getting out of hand, then
- 39:50Speaker 5: I would, you know, I would want to get my
- 39:52Speaker 5: I would want to get my guys, get the roster
- 39:53Speaker 5: in the game. You know, let everybody play. Like you said,
- 39:56Speaker 5: I want to get out healthy as the main thing
- 39:58Speaker 5: we talk about to it right, you don't want to
- 40:01Speaker 5: have your players, especially the guys you're going to be
- 40:03Speaker 5: depending on throughout the season banged up, just trying to,
- 40:07Speaker 5: you know, prove a point. So I don't know, I
- 40:09Speaker 5: agree with that, and I just I hope that you know,
- 40:12Speaker 5: we can have a good showing.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and now before we because you look like you
- 40:17Speaker 4: get raid switch on me. Let me let me ask
- 40:20Speaker 4: this question, because you know, I'm hearing people that are talking.
- 40:23Speaker 4: You know that okay, now you know people starting to
- 40:26Speaker 4: starting to mumble that you know will help make it
- 40:28Speaker 4: through the season.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Where you know, where is that at? Do you.
- 40:36Speaker 4: Do you think that this that that that he's at
- 40:40Speaker 4: that juncture or.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Is it fan is it fan base?
- 40:44Speaker 4: I think man an issue more so than maybe I
- 40:47Speaker 4: think that we're gonna have to see how this maybe
- 40:49Speaker 4: how the season plays out.
- 40:52Speaker 5: Again to your point, we can't make this week, Come on,
- 40:56Speaker 5: guys with us. We're not judging that off this week.
- 40:59Speaker 5: But I think you know, if you can, because I
- 41:02Speaker 5: think it's what conference us say now or excuse me something.
- 41:05Speaker 5: So I think if you can, you know, be competitive
- 41:07Speaker 5: in the sun Belt, I think you could.
- 41:09Speaker 2: You know, he'll he'll last.
- 41:12Speaker 5: But I think I was going to switch gears because
- 41:14Speaker 5: the same conversation is going over with Neil Brown and
- 41:16Speaker 5: WVU right, and to me, to me, that's more of
- 41:19Speaker 5: a like, you gotta be Kansas this week, y'all both
- 41:23Speaker 5: wanted to. And I think that people aren't necessarily seeing
- 41:27Speaker 5: the improvements and the steps right because we're thinking at
- 41:30Speaker 5: this point, WVU is gonna be competing for a Big
- 41:32Speaker 5: twelve title. Marshall's gonna be competing for a Sun Belt title.
- 41:35Speaker 5: So I think that's where people want to be at
- 41:37Speaker 5: at this point. Not necessarily that you're winning or you're
- 41:40Speaker 5: gonna undefeat it, but you gotta be competing for WVU.
- 41:43Speaker 5: You got to kind of be at this point. Knock
- 41:44Speaker 5: them on the door the college playoff for twelve.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Teams and do you think they're knocking? No, they're not. Not.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know.
- 41:55Speaker 4: You know, I'm an and believe it or not, I'm
- 41:59Speaker 4: a Neil Brown kind of fan. Like I like some
- 42:01Speaker 4: of the things that he has said and and and
- 42:04Speaker 4: kind of like just kind of his whole mannerisms and
- 42:07Speaker 4: stuff like that.
- 42:08Speaker 2: I kind of enjoyed that.
- 42:10Speaker 4: I just don't know if if it's enough to motivate
- 42:16Speaker 4: the kids to go out, I should come talking about kids,
- 42:19Speaker 4: but the young men out to.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Say them, I know how you compete when like, I
- 42:26Speaker 5: don't know how you can because if you're looking at
- 42:29Speaker 5: like the old Big East days right where a lot
- 42:32Speaker 5: of the talent pool was coming from Florida, you're coming
- 42:35Speaker 5: from Georgia and you're just really coming up through the
- 42:37Speaker 5: pipeline because you know, you had Miami there, got those
- 42:40Speaker 5: kids were staying on the East Coast. Parents get to
- 42:42Speaker 5: see him in and out a lot. I just don't
- 42:44Speaker 5: know how you compete at a Big twelve, excuse me,
- 42:47Speaker 5: in the Big twelve trying to recruit in Texas. I mean,
- 42:50Speaker 5: I don't Again, I don't know if that's the plan.
- 42:52Speaker 5: I don't know if how much the recruiting down there,
- 42:54Speaker 5: but you would seem like you would try to get
- 42:56Speaker 5: some of those pool of players, but it's so many
- 42:58Speaker 5: colleges or and know teams and organizations they can play
- 43:02Speaker 5: for down there, what's the incentive to come to w
- 43:05Speaker 5: v U. So it's like to me, I just don't
- 43:07Speaker 5: know if we're getting the consistent talent like we used
- 43:11Speaker 5: to get.
- 43:12Speaker 2: And that that makes sense because what's if you.
- 43:16Speaker 4: Are at a WVU level, is there another team that
- 43:21Speaker 4: WVU plays recruiting you? Also, I'm sure it is, I say,
- 43:26Speaker 4: And if that be the case, what do you what
- 43:29Speaker 4: what's gonna be your judgment of which one which one
- 43:32Speaker 4: of those pits. So when you're thinking about going to college,
- 43:35Speaker 4: what's and you're looking at to get a scholarship and
- 43:39Speaker 4: you got two schools and one school's got a great
- 43:43Speaker 4: football history, one school is struggling. Where you're gonna go, Well,
- 43:48Speaker 4: I mean, w got a pretty No, I'm not saying
- 43:52Speaker 4: that they don't. But the current see because when you say,
- 43:56Speaker 4: but you said history, they have a history.
- 43:59Speaker 2: But the kids that are coming through are not looking
- 44:02Speaker 2: at the history. Okay, I'll give you that. They're they're
- 44:05Speaker 2: they're they're looking at what did you do last week?
- 44:07Speaker 2: What did you do last year? What is your season
- 44:11Speaker 2: like now? And I think that's the I think that's
- 44:14Speaker 2: the that's the place where.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Marshall n WU loses on uh, they lose on some
- 44:22Speaker 4: of these kids who that that that's keeping them from
- 44:27Speaker 4: being able to sign some of these kids because I
- 44:29Speaker 4: just don't know. I don't know if we've got the
- 44:33Speaker 4: current history of these of the two teams, our two
- 44:37Speaker 4: schools to pull in the great athlete, the great quarterback.
- 44:43Speaker 5: But I see, I sort of disagree with that because,
- 44:46Speaker 5: like anybody can be turned around if you get those
- 44:49Speaker 5: right guys. I think the problem is just recruiting. Like
- 44:51Speaker 5: I said, you're competing against Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma.
- 44:57Speaker 5: You're competing against UH organization. I keep saying organization. But
- 45:01Speaker 5: you're completeing against colleges who have a recruiting base out
- 45:04Speaker 5: of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and going into Florida. If you
- 45:08Speaker 5: look at wvu's roster, yeah, they got some Florida cats
- 45:11Speaker 5: on there, a few, not like they used to have,
- 45:13Speaker 5: but they got mainly East Coast cast they're not getting
- 45:16Speaker 5: they don't have I haven't seen one player from Texas yet,
- 45:19Speaker 5: you know, so.
- 45:20Speaker 2: You're not getting Georgia.
- 45:21Speaker 5: They got maybe one or two Georgia, but you're not
- 45:24Speaker 5: getting the talent from Texas.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Where back in the.
- 45:27Speaker 5: Day, when you were in the Big East and you're
- 45:30Speaker 5: competing against Miami, Syracuse, Rutgers, a lot of the recruiting
- 45:35Speaker 5: was coming from Pennsylvania, the New Jersey area, Ohio, and
- 45:39Speaker 5: some West Virginia, but in mainly Florida. And they were
- 45:43Speaker 5: able to go to Florida, able to go to Georgia,
- 45:45Speaker 5: able to go to Alabama and get some of those
- 45:47Speaker 5: guys up. I mean even at state back in the day,
- 45:50Speaker 5: right we had a plethora of got catched from Florida. Yes,
- 45:53Speaker 5: you're not getting those same cats now, you're getting a
- 45:55Speaker 5: lot of cats from the East counton. I'm not trying
- 45:57Speaker 5: to be like a regional bias, but we're competing against
- 46:02Speaker 5: Texas teams and not they got full of Texas players
- 46:04Speaker 5: that we ain't full of Texas Alabama and the Louisiana
- 46:08Speaker 5: players that we ain't getting. I don't even see one
- 46:10Speaker 5: Louisiana player on here.
- 46:12Speaker 4: And and let's I mean, when you start talking about
- 46:15Speaker 4: high school football.
- 46:16Speaker 2: It's different down there. Different, That's what I'm saying. Different.
- 46:20Speaker 2: It's a life. I heard I.
- 46:22Speaker 5: Think pac Man Jones said this, and I think he
- 46:25Speaker 5: said this. He was like, if you look, I think
- 46:28Speaker 5: it was him. It was a oh it was a
- 46:30Speaker 5: former player who said this. If it wasn't him, But
- 46:32Speaker 5: he said, when you look at Texas and Florida, he's like,
- 46:35Speaker 5: Florida got the best athletes. Were talking about hig school football,
- 46:38Speaker 5: Texas got the best facilities. If you look at these
- 46:42Speaker 5: facilities at in Texas, high school facilities are comparable to WVU.
- 46:48Speaker 5: They're spending millions on stadiums and workout facilities, and you're
- 46:52Speaker 5: getting guys who already are in essence in college programs
- 46:57Speaker 5: at Texas, at Texas Tech, at Baylor, at TCU, at Oklahoma.
- 47:00Speaker 5: We ain't getting those cats.
- 47:02Speaker 4: So how we necessarily supposed to compete in a conference
- 47:05Speaker 4: where we're not even making a dit in recruiting.
- 47:09Speaker 2: You see what I'm saying, I do, I do, and
- 47:13Speaker 2: we're not competitive on that end. And we both know this.
- 47:17Speaker 4: You recruiting is the most critical piece of building a program.
- 47:25Speaker 4: And you at some point, you you used to could
- 47:30Speaker 4: do this. You could get a quarterback maybe a year
- 47:34Speaker 4: or so later, get a good receiver, maybe a year
- 47:36Speaker 4: or so later, get a good running back, and then
- 47:38Speaker 4: all of a sudden, now you're pretty good by the
- 47:41Speaker 4: time you do that. Try to do that now that
- 47:43Speaker 4: quarterback's gone.
- 47:44Speaker 5: Yeah, And like I said, I don't see one in
- 47:46Speaker 5: that kid. And I'm scrolling through the roster now I
- 47:48Speaker 5: don't see one cat from Texas. I see maybe one
- 47:52Speaker 5: or two cats from Oklahoma. You see a lot of
- 47:54Speaker 5: Georgia Cats, a lot of players from the region. You know,
- 47:58Speaker 5: we're talking about Ohio West Virginia, Maryland, DC, some New Jersey.
- 48:03Speaker 5: But like I said, you're not playing against the same
- 48:06Speaker 5: type of players, so at the same And again I'm
- 48:08Speaker 5: not trying to disparage the players that are on the roster,
- 48:11Speaker 5: but I'm saying Texas football is Florida football different. I'm
- 48:15Speaker 5: saying Texas. If you look California, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida,
- 48:21Speaker 5: that football is just different down there, and.
- 48:25Speaker 4: It's it's it's a it's a lifestyle.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's different. Everybody. They put way more resources into
- 48:31Speaker 2: it and it's just different. Man.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Okay, So all right, I'm gonna so let me let
- 48:36Speaker 4: me do this and and I'm not I'm not banging
- 48:40Speaker 4: on our state, but comparable to West Virginia, what where
- 48:49Speaker 4: are we? Where do you think we are lacking in
- 48:52Speaker 4: how we approach the success of our young athletes? And
- 48:58Speaker 4: I'm i and I'll throw this out first, Okay, I
- 49:03Speaker 4: think our problem is is we're in the moment like
- 49:06Speaker 4: we are. You know, we're rooting our kid on to
- 49:11Speaker 4: be good and you football, be good in middle school
- 49:14Speaker 4: and be good in high school, and that good isn't
- 49:19Speaker 4: great enough to maybe go to one of these D
- 49:22Speaker 4: one schools, and so I think, and I could be wrong,
- 49:29Speaker 4: we're not We're not pushing our kids that want to
- 49:34Speaker 4: be in sports, who want to play in college ball,
- 49:37Speaker 4: maybe want to go to the NFL.
- 49:39Speaker 2: We're not pushing them to be to understand what the
- 49:47Speaker 2: requirements are. I disagree with that totally.
- 49:50Speaker 5: The problem with West Virginia is just that this West
- 49:53Speaker 5: Virginia has about one point three million people that would
- 49:56Speaker 5: fit inside the city of Houston and probably not even
- 49:59Speaker 5: make a day.
- 50:00Speaker 2: We're just small. We don't have enough people.
- 50:03Speaker 5: Again, if you if you took a city in Texas,
- 50:06Speaker 5: you could take the entire population of West Virginia and
- 50:10Speaker 5: fit it inside a city in Texas or city in Louisiana.
- 50:14Speaker 5: So what I'm saying is you just don't have the numbers.
- 50:17Speaker 5: You're not gonna you're not going to recruit if you
- 50:21Speaker 5: took just if you just recruit the city of Baton
- 50:23Speaker 5: Rouge or city of New Orleans or just the city
- 50:25Speaker 5: of Houston, they're not gonna. That's not enough talent to
- 50:28Speaker 5: just fill to to to fill a whole roster.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Maybe maybe not.
- 50:34Speaker 5: And I would say number two, it's not about the
- 50:36Speaker 5: mentality it's just that again we we don't have the numbers.
- 50:39Speaker 5: So that's number one and number two. Our kids don't
- 50:41Speaker 5: run track. So if you look at Louisiana, if you
- 50:45Speaker 5: look at Texas, if you look at Florida, those kids
- 50:48Speaker 5: run track.
- 50:49Speaker 2: We we we.
- 50:51Speaker 4: I don't know if if you're five, if you're five
- 50:54Speaker 4: nine and you run a four to four and you're
- 50:56Speaker 4: a wide receiver, why are you playing a you stop?
- 51:00Speaker 5: Stop it, go run track? Your future is probably not
- 51:03Speaker 5: in basketball. Unfortunately. I'm not trying to, you know, diminish
- 51:07Speaker 5: your dream, but run track and then maybe you could
- 51:10Speaker 5: build it up a little better because of the problem
- 51:12Speaker 5: is that once you start competing nationally again, you may
- 51:17Speaker 5: have the skills set to compete nationally, which I think
- 51:20Speaker 5: our kids do. I think there's been too much of
- 51:22Speaker 5: a premium on skill set and not athleticism.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Well, okay, I'm gonna agree, don't have the numbers. The numbers,
- 51:30Speaker 4: I get the numbers. But but but we ought to
- 51:32Speaker 4: be able to be producing and continuously producing a couple
- 51:36Speaker 4: two or three.
- 51:37Speaker 2: We do. We have two roster.
- 51:40Speaker 4: But I was just gonna say, look because what I know,
- 51:43Speaker 4: what I know is when we produce one when we
- 51:46Speaker 4: get one that's going that's going to college and playing,
- 51:50Speaker 4: they get to the next level.
- 51:51Speaker 2: But here's the.
- 51:52Speaker 5: Thing, though, we are producing great because we got to
- 51:55Speaker 5: You look at Chicago Bears. I think they played on
- 51:57Speaker 5: Monday night. We had two kids from West Virginia on
- 52:00Speaker 5: NFL roster.
- 52:01Speaker 4: And I'm supporting that. The question is those kids, those
- 52:05Speaker 4: two kids, what.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Are they doing. Why am I not trying to figure
- 52:08Speaker 2: out what they did?
- 52:09Speaker 4: They just got the metrics, bro. I don't think it's
- 52:12Speaker 4: just the metrics. I don't think it's just the metrics.
- 52:14Speaker 4: But here's the thing, though, everybody's not going to make it.
- 52:16Speaker 5: If you take the city of Houston, they're not producing
- 52:19Speaker 5: like five ten NFL players and they probably triple our population.
- 52:25Speaker 5: They're not doing that. So what I'm saying is that
- 52:28Speaker 5: is it's a numbers game and we're only going to
- 52:31Speaker 5: produce so much. And the ones that we are producing
- 52:35Speaker 5: it that's kind of on the line. They're not running trackticism.
- 52:41Speaker 4: I agree about the track and the fact that these
- 52:45Speaker 4: teams schools don't even have a track team. That's crazy
- 52:49Speaker 4: because they don't have anybody coming out. And if i'm
- 52:51Speaker 4: if I'm a football coach. I'm making sure my kids
- 52:54Speaker 4: are running trying. But my point, though, my point is
- 52:59Speaker 4: I think that we have had talented kids who couldn't
- 53:05Speaker 4: make it, but they can't even get they can't even
- 53:09Speaker 4: get to college because they don't have the work ethic.
- 53:12Speaker 5: They don't, you know, because they're not gonna make it anyway.
- 53:15Speaker 5: You can go across any city in America and that
- 53:18Speaker 5: and that's gonna be the same conversation. You're gonna have
- 53:20Speaker 5: them same stories. They're not making it anyway. And I'm saying, like, again,
- 53:25Speaker 5: it's a numbers game, because if you have more numbers
- 53:27Speaker 5: than you're gonna have the kids who actually have the
- 53:28Speaker 5: mindset and in the physical acumen to do it.
- 53:31Speaker 2: So are you are you saying that that? Okay?
- 53:35Speaker 4: So if if I'm in South Charleston, I'm a junior,
- 53:40Speaker 4: I don't have I don't have a picture of a
- 53:42Speaker 4: guy necessarily or whatever. I'm in whatever high school, I
- 53:46Speaker 4: don't have a I don't have a picture of a
- 53:48Speaker 4: guy who I want to be like I want to black.
- 53:52Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying all up and down roster and
- 53:55Speaker 5: there there in there in the NFL, you know. But
- 53:58Speaker 5: my problem is this when people make those sort of comments,
- 54:01Speaker 5: I think we have to start to reverse engineers. You
- 54:04Speaker 5: have to have the mental acumen. First, we look at
- 54:08Speaker 5: the physical oka you have to have admitt they was
- 54:11Speaker 5: doing a story on Peyton Manny. Long before he was
- 54:14Speaker 5: physically anything he had, he was developing his mental acumen.
- 54:20Speaker 5: So if a guy has the mental acumen, then we
- 54:22Speaker 5: can assess it, if he has the metric and if
- 54:25Speaker 5: he has the ability to make it physically. A lot
- 54:28Speaker 5: of some of most kids playing sports that they don't.
- 54:30Speaker 5: They're not even they just don't have the mental acumen
- 54:32Speaker 5: to make it. And that's okay.
- 54:36Speaker 4: But here's here's what bothers me about that is because
- 54:40Speaker 4: my belief, Okay, my belief comes from me making it.
- 54:44Speaker 2: My belief is that that kid that we don't.
- 54:47Speaker 4: See, that we don't understand and we don't like, who
- 54:51Speaker 4: we don't give a chance, Why is he or she not?
- 54:58Speaker 2: Why won't you work harder for your dream? Don't give in?
- 55:02Speaker 5: But that conversation may not be their dream again, even
- 55:05Speaker 5: if it is your dream.
- 55:06Speaker 2: I'm speaking of, I'm speaking.
- 55:08Speaker 4: I'm specifically speaking because I know for a fact there's
- 55:12Speaker 4: a ton of kids that see a sport and say,
- 55:16Speaker 4: oh I want to be an Olympics' bruh.
- 55:20Speaker 2: They just saying that.
- 55:22Speaker 5: They're just saying that you've had the physical excuse me,
- 55:25Speaker 5: the mental acumen way before anything physical was ever developed.
- 55:32Speaker 5: You weren't even starting, as you said, you weren't starting
- 55:34Speaker 5: as a phomore, you weren't a superstar, but your mental
- 55:37Speaker 5: acumen was there since you're seven years old. So a
- 55:39Speaker 5: lot of guys they can play, they can do all
- 55:41Speaker 5: the things, but they don't necessarily have a deep rooted
- 55:45Speaker 5: belief that they're actually going to do that or they're
- 55:47Speaker 5: actually willing to do that.
- 55:49Speaker 2: That's only a.
- 55:50Speaker 5: Small number of dudes who who Because some dudes, their
- 55:54Speaker 5: physical is going to supersede everything and they're going to
- 55:56Speaker 5: be able to have that chance regardless. But for most guys,
- 56:00Speaker 5: you gotta have the mental acumen and then all the
- 56:02Speaker 5: other things will come later if you're able to develop physically.
- 56:06Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. A lot of guys that say
- 56:08Speaker 5: they want to make it, man, they ain't want to
- 56:09Speaker 5: make it. They bs and they don't want that.
- 56:11Speaker 4: See all right, I'm going to I'm going to say
- 56:14Speaker 4: this to to for any parents that are listening and
- 56:19Speaker 4: and have and has a kid who has any aspirations,
- 56:22Speaker 4: whether it's D one, college ball, whether it's the NFL, NBA, whatever, whatever.
- 56:28Speaker 7: It is.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Playing a game. And I don't care how many games
- 56:33Speaker 2: you you know you can. You can.
- 56:35Speaker 4: You can play travel sports. You can play fifteen games
- 56:37Speaker 4: in a weekend if you want.
- 56:39Speaker 2: That is not.
- 56:40Speaker 4: Necessarily the ticket. Playing more is not the ticket because
- 56:46Speaker 4: it's easy to play. It's harder to work. It's harder
- 56:50Speaker 4: to work out. It's harder to get out there and
- 56:53Speaker 4: run when it's raining, it's hard to get out there
- 56:55Speaker 4: running when it's cold, it's hard to get out there
- 56:57Speaker 4: running when it's again.
- 56:58Speaker 2: You can't make a ki do that.
- 57:01Speaker 5: They have to want that because even if you make them,
- 57:05Speaker 5: as soon as they get from under your wing, they're
- 57:07Speaker 5: not gonna do it no more.
- 57:09Speaker 2: So you have to again.
- 57:10Speaker 5: You can instill it in them, and you can try
- 57:12Speaker 5: to hope that once you release them they'll do it,
- 57:15Speaker 5: but you gotta have it mentally first. See, I see,
- 57:19Speaker 5: it's not about work, it's really about mentally. And I'm
- 57:22Speaker 5: buying exactly, I'm buying what you're saying. But like, like,
- 57:26Speaker 5: like I said, I shared this with my dad. Even
- 57:29Speaker 5: though like like, I knew if.
- 57:31Speaker 4: I'm not working out, I knew he was gonna ultimately
- 57:33Speaker 4: say something like you know you're not you're not running
- 57:36Speaker 4: this morning?
- 57:37Speaker 2: Make you though he didn't make me. Okay, then, so
- 57:39Speaker 2: that's the thing. You making my point. That's what I said.
- 57:41Speaker 5: I know, I said, I gotta have a supporting parent. Yeah,
- 57:45Speaker 5: that's that's Yeah, it helps to have a supporting parent.
- 57:48Speaker 5: But a lot of guys, I mean, let's face it, man,
- 57:50Speaker 5: a lot of guys you you the guys who who
- 57:54Speaker 5: make it, make it, who are consistently consistent, make it
- 57:57Speaker 5: do ten years in there, uh in a in a
- 58:00Speaker 5: professional sports they're like you where they they had to
- 58:03Speaker 5: support but they had it mentally. There's very few Allen
- 58:06Speaker 5: Iverson's who just had just enormous talent that that's that's
- 58:11Speaker 5: far and few between who figure out a way to
- 58:13Speaker 5: make it based off that. A lot of guys, most
- 58:15Speaker 5: guys are just they they want it and they're going
- 58:18Speaker 5: forward and they're willing to do it. But a lot
- 58:20Speaker 5: of I'm talking about guys who make it, but it's
- 58:22Speaker 5: a whole bunch of guys who got the physical ability
- 58:24Speaker 5: who just ain't got it mentally and and that, and
- 58:27Speaker 5: I think that's where See, that's just hard for me.
- 58:29Speaker 5: And I know we've got to go, but that's like
- 58:31Speaker 5: it's hard for me, man to think if you could
- 58:35Speaker 5: look at yourself in the mirror and say, I got
- 58:37Speaker 5: the metrics, you know, I got, I got, I got
- 58:40Speaker 5: all the metrics.
- 58:42Speaker 2: I just don't understand, like why the you know, why
- 58:44Speaker 2: you're not putting that times.
- 58:45Speaker 5: They don't want it, they don't want to play, They
- 58:47Speaker 5: don't really want it. They say they want, but they don't.
- 58:50Speaker 5: And I hold it before we go.
- 58:51Speaker 2: I got it.
- 58:52Speaker 5: We had a player a w V s U unfortunately
- 58:55Speaker 5: what should you say university football program unfortunately passed Jolly Harrington.
- 58:59Speaker 5: A very very sad situation. So I just want to
- 59:02Speaker 5: send you know, an R I P and just send
- 59:06Speaker 5: my deepest scndulence to his family in the community at
- 59:09Speaker 5: Westvirginia State University.
