Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Kurt Busch Announces Retirement From NASCAR
Transcript
- 0:00Last year in Las Vegas, where my racing career began, I sat in
- 0:03front of many of you and as one of the toughest and hardest
- 0:06things I've ever had to do in my racing career, and that was to
- 0:10talk about not being behind the wheel of a racecar.
- 0:14After decades spent at a racetrack with helmet in hand
- 0:17preparing to compete, I was forced to take a step back and
- 0:20focus on my health while stepping away from fulltime
- 0:25racing for the 2023 season. It's been difficult, but it has
- 0:29provided me with a different perspective and more time to
- 0:33continue focusing on my recuperation and reflect on all
- 0:37that the sport has given me and all that I still have left to
- 0:40give back to it. Racing at NASCAR's highest level
- 0:45requires every last bit of focus, heart, stamina and
- 0:50determination, and I know right now I can't give what is
- 0:54required to compete at that level week in and week out, so
- 0:59I'm officially announcing my retirement from NASCAR Cup
- 1:03Series competition over the last several months.
- 1:08Being out of the car, I've appreciated the opportunity to
- 1:10remain actively involved with 2311 Monster Energy and the
- 1:15Toyota Racing family and as I can do all that I can to
- 1:18continue and want to do all I can to continue making this race
- 1:22team one of the best in Motorsports.
- 1:27I guess it's fitting that at age 45, my 23 years as a full time
- 1:32driver in NASCAR would culminate in working with 2311 to impart
- 1:39the knowledge I have for our drivers and our team.
- 1:42And as I transition out of the driver's seat, I can't help but
- 1:45feel incredibly blessed to have spent the amount of time I did
- 1:49as a a driver in NASCAR. And I can never have imagined it
- 1:53growing up as a blue collar kid from Las Vegas.
- 1:57So many people have been part of my journey.
- 1:59I want to thank the fans, my family, friends, sponsors and
- 2:06team members. Thanks to everyone who has
- 2:09taught me the different things around the Motorsports world and
- 2:14also for those who have had to put up with me.
- 2:17But and then I want to just thank again everyone that
- 2:20continues to push me to strive for success in this sport.
- 2:24It's time for a new journey and I'm excited to get started.
- 2:28Jerry Jordan kicking the tires on net.
- 2:30You talk about this journey. Can you explain what that
- 2:32journey looks like at this point in time?
- 2:34And you know what it what does the future hold for Kurt Busch?
- 2:38Yeah, it's it's difficult to know which avenues will lead to
- 2:41what here in the shortterm future.
- 2:44Still wanting to get doctor approval and to get cleared.
- 2:48That's the first step. That's what I need to do
- 2:50personally. Then we'll have opportunities to
- 2:54talk to different Motorsports teams, different sponsors and
- 2:58doing other races. But the perspective and taking
- 3:02us a little step back from being in the car every week, The most
- 3:06joy that I've found is that everything is slowed down.
- 3:08For me to help analyze the data, to give advice to Bubba and to
- 3:14give advice to Tyler, the engineering staff, the team
- 3:18members at 2311 like that. It's really neat having all of
- 3:21this current knowledge and having the opportunity to be
- 3:25able to digest it and to give back to this team.
- 3:28So that's that's the shortterm goal.
- 3:30And one more going into this decision, obviously it's very
- 3:33emotional for you and obviously your fans, your family.
- 3:36Can you talk about how you came to this culmination of what the
- 3:39timing and everything to to tell us?
- 3:42Yeah. Again, it's not one moment
- 3:44that's that's led to this, it's it's a few different factors.
- 3:49And my body is just having a battle with Father Time.
- 3:54I've had arthritis ever since I can remember.
- 3:57My gout is flared up so much that I can barely walk on some
- 4:00days, just pushing to get through physical therapy and to
- 4:04continue the workouts. I remember last summer I was
- 4:09trying to not show that emotion and I barely couldn't even walk
- 4:12to the car at Dover because I had to have some shots prerace
- 4:16just so that I could move my knee and move my feet.
- 4:19Those are those moments where things were starting to add up
- 4:22before things happened at Pocono.
- 4:25So Father Time, I'm 45 years old.
- 4:27I'm very happy, complacent and there's nothing that I look back
- 4:31on and regret about having this opportunity at the top level of
- 4:34NASCAR. Alright, we'll go to Bob and
- 4:37then Chris. Bob Parkers, Fox Sports You've
- 4:39said previously that 90 to 95% of your life is normal, but when
- 4:44it's when your heart rate gets elevated is where things is when
- 4:47you've had. Difficulty.
- 4:49Is that still the case? It's not as bad as it was last
- 4:53summer or last fall. I genuinely feel good about the
- 4:57improvements throughout. Call it three months at a time,
- 5:01and then we'll push harder to find other things to help with
- 5:04my vestibular movements and to balance out my core strength so
- 5:09that way, you know, everything is stronger within my system to
- 5:13be able to react at top level speed.
- 5:18Hey Kurt. Chris Collins news Daytona
- 5:20Beach. First of all congratulations on
- 5:23a remarkable career. And so you your your crash that
- 5:28was ultimately the last time you were in the cup car out in
- 5:31qualifying at Pocono that came amidst a series of crashes in
- 5:35the next Gen. car that caused some some head injuries.
- 5:38So I was wondering if you have the chance to observe some of
- 5:40the efforts NASCAR has made to kind of improve that and what do
- 5:45you think about the future of preventing head injuries?
- 5:48In the Cup Series going forward, yeah, it is kind of a Hollywood
- 5:52story ending so to speak. I'm going for poll and in your
- 5:55last race, you know, going out on top.
- 5:58And yes, I I think that NASCAR is is doing all the right things
- 6:02to improve the safety of the car and made quick prompt changes
- 6:07after collecting data on my incident and many others.
- 6:10And it's always something in life where you're trying to
- 6:12improve things and make it better for everyone.
- 6:15And I think NASCAR, the teams and the collaboration that I see
- 6:19between the the DAC, the RTA, NASCAR, everybody's moving in
- 6:25the right direction. All right, we'll go to Claire
- 6:28and then Lee Spencer. Claire B Lang, SiriusXM NASCAR
- 6:31Radio. It's pretty moving to look
- 6:33around this room and see Steve O'Donnell and Mike Hilton and.
- 6:39Toyota Racing Development and David Wilson and your team and
- 6:43your brother back here who came early, by the way, to make sure
- 6:46he was here on time. But what does all this mean to
- 6:48you as far as the feeling you get from the many years you've
- 6:51put into it and the people that are here supporting you in this
- 6:54announcement? I said it wasn't gonna get
- 6:56emotional. There you go, Claire.
- 6:58Thanks. Sorry.
- 7:01No thank you to everyone. I was texting Mike Kelton
- 7:05earlier this week and I said to him I didn't really think I was
- 7:08going to get out of 2002 with as many arguments as we've had.
- 7:12And yet everyone that's in the room thank you, whether it's the
- 7:16sport, our manufacturer, our sponsors, you know, thank you.
- 7:21Mitch Covington, you stood behind me back in 2012 and said
- 7:26we will support you, we will sponsor you, Kurt.
- 7:29And it's been an amazing journey with you guys and to say that
- 7:32you've been with a sponsor for over a decade we're getting
- 7:35close to for 12 years now that's that's been an amazing
- 7:39friendship. Anytime I reference Monster
- 7:41Energy it's like I work for the company and I'm trying to do all
- 7:45all I can to help move product and to create that lifestyle and
- 7:49I can feel and so thank you to the team.
- 7:52Thank you guys. There's there's plenty of
- 7:56stories and fun and wins and losses.
- 7:59But thank you to to NASCAR, you know for for giving me a fair
- 8:03shake at this. There's a bunch of cool trophies
- 8:05at the house, lots of memories and I hope to give back in all
- 8:09the ways that I can moving forward.
- 8:11And one follow up, it's obvious you're a gifted race car driver.
- 8:14But yeah, I've stood out on Pitt Road to watch you work with the
- 8:17team and it's real easy to see what they take from you.
- 8:21I've seen you put sticky notes in the motor coach of where
- 8:24you're putting down tire codes and things like that.
- 8:27What? What is it that you have and
- 8:29what have you found with the team in particular?
- 8:32Because I think there's a lot you can give back, maybe maybe
- 8:34even more than what you gave us a driver.
- 8:36What what is that and what reward do you get from it?
- 8:39I think the foundation that my dad Tom, instilled in Kyle and I
- 8:43from the very beginning about race cars and working on them
- 8:47and understanding every element about the car even before you
- 8:50drive it, that that was a key factor.
- 8:54And then when my dad was putting so much time and money towards
- 8:58our racing, he's working 80 hours a week, we're going to the
- 9:03race track every weekend. And when I started to click and
- 9:06it started to click for me and I started to win races, I I just
- 9:09wanted his job to be easier. I mean, he's my crew chief, he's
- 9:13my car owner, he's a sponsor, he's everything.
- 9:16And I wanted to communicate to him clearly how the car was
- 9:18handling. And I think that's something
- 9:20that I took with me to every race team was just trying to be
- 9:24clear, precise and help them do their job, but also make their
- 9:27job easier for them. And I think that's why I had so
- 9:30much success at all the different race teams.
- 9:34We'll go to leave. Leespencercatchfence.com So you
- 9:39talked that you eventually want to get back into some form of
- 9:42racing. What is it going to take?
- 9:43What is your, you know, PT? What have you look like to reach
- 9:48or attain that goal? Yeah, keep pushing with the
- 9:52physical therapy, the workouts, you know, doctor visits, tests
- 9:57and there is no timeline. I just know I need to feel from
- 10:00right here that I am good and look the doctor in the eye and
- 10:04he'll tell me that I'm good to go and it again, I'll just that
- 10:09was the struggle mentally, emotionally, the the push last
- 10:12summer to try to get back for the playoffs and I wasn't able
- 10:17to make it. That was the toughest one.
- 10:19Now everything's settling in and and whether I drive again or
- 10:22not, there's so many more things for me to do and there's no real
- 10:25timeline. And when you look back, you
- 10:27know, you talk about being that blue kid from Las Vegas.
- 10:30But when you look at what you've accomplished, whether it's the
- 10:33wins, the championship, winning the Daytona 500, you know, can
- 10:39you just talk about the evolution from that, you know,
- 10:42kid that showed up at Roush Fenway, you know, so many years
- 10:45ago to where you are now? Yeah.
- 10:48Being able to win in all of NASCAR's divisions, you know,
- 10:52the the, the ladder system of a hobby stock.
- 10:55You know, a late model, you know, Southwest Tour, cars,
- 10:58trucks went straight to Cup, then came back and did a few
- 11:02races in Xfinity, you know, and have all the wins at all the
- 11:06different style tracks. I I wanted to be a driver that
- 11:11fans could always count on for a good solid run each day, each
- 11:15weekend, whether it's up in New England, you know, those New
- 11:19Englanders embraced me after Ricky Craven and my finish at
- 11:22Darlington. You know the the Midwesterners
- 11:25and the the big push in Chicago and Kansas and Texas.
- 11:29I was just wanted to give them, you know, somebody to root for
- 11:32that they could always count on because I'm pretty much just
- 11:35like them. I'm a blue collar worker that
- 11:39got an opportunity to do something really cool and that's
- 11:43that's that racer racer in me that was able to win 19
- 11:46different years. If I could have snuck that win
- 11:49in at at Sonoma with James Finch's car at Phoenix Racing,
- 11:53the rear end was falling out of it but, and I cannot believe we
- 11:56didn't win at Furniture Row, That's one thing I look back on.
- 12:00We had nine outside polls but we could not finish the race at the
- 12:04end. That would have been 21 straight
- 12:06years, 22 straight years of winning.
- 12:09And I think that would be more so than than Richard Petty's
- 12:12record. So I just missed out on a
- 12:14couple. But it's nothing that I really
- 12:17get stuck on too much. And you know, I was going for my
- 12:21own little stat because I was a baseball guy.
- 12:23I was trying to create this little thing called a 3030 club,
- 12:26which is 30 wins and 30 poles. And I think there's only a few
- 12:30select drivers that fit in that category.
- 12:33And I came up just a little short and maybe that was my
- 12:36improper motivation at Pocono trying to go for pole.
- 12:40But you always got to have goals.
- 12:42You always got to push yourself. And I want to continue to do
- 12:44that with my team, sponsors and everybody.
- 12:47And I thank you all as as a family here because you've
- 12:52helped me grow quite a bit since that the blue collar kid got out
- 12:55of Vegas. We're.
- 12:56Going to go right there to the left.
- 12:59Mike Brodsky, Florida National News Kurt, as you reflect back
- 13:02on your memories being here at Daytona, what are your greatest
- 13:05memories of both being a driver as well as a fan?
- 13:10You know, as a driver I got to race here in the trucks and
- 13:13finished second. My first ever race here, I
- 13:16wrecked about 15 times but somehow kept the fenders on it
- 13:20and finished second. Ran I rock cars here?
- 13:23I've been in the 24 hour race here and finished the podium.
- 13:27I finished second 3 * 2003 2005 2008.
- 13:34My teammate Ryan Newman got in my way and so I had to push him
- 13:38and I never was angry at the track though like there was so
- 13:41many second place finishes and and wrecks and and frustration
- 13:46moments. I was like you know the track
- 13:48maybe I'll win here one day and I was able able to have that
- 13:51opportunity in 2017. So it's a it's a special place
- 13:56here Charlotte, Darlington, Bristol, Vegas you know those
- 14:02are those are my top five but Daytona is is our crown jewel
- 14:07Motorsports NASCAR event, the Daytona 500 and I'm happy that I
- 14:10have the Harley, JRO. Congratulations.
- 14:15Do we have any questions in the press box?
- 14:17No questions in the press box. Do we have any final questions
- 14:21down here, right up here? Deb Williams Auto Week Kurt, as
- 14:31you continue your recovery and work to hopefully one day get
- 14:35back in the car, just to clarify something, will you continue to
- 14:39work with 2311 in A? An advisory role or or helping
- 14:45with that team, Yes, as long as they'll allow me.
- 14:50I made-up my official title this year.
- 14:52I was called CFD. That's coefficient of drag.
- 14:56Really. That's what CFD stands for.
- 14:58But I I renicknamed it captain of the fund department.
- 15:03So that's been a good role. And then as of late though I
- 15:05revised it. I want to become slightly more
- 15:07professional within the group, so I've named myself CVO Chief
- 15:13Vision Officer. Of course it's whatever it
- 15:17means, whatever it means, but I enjoy working with all the
- 15:20departments and being that extra set of eyes and helping our team
- 15:23advance so that we can win more races, be more competitive and
- 15:27have shots at winning championships.
- 15:29Because that's the person who I am and I want to give back to
- 15:31our team. Thank you and thank you for your
- 15:34wonderful career. Thank you.
- 15:36Appreciate it everybody. Thank.
- 15:38You.
