- 1:18dedicated to the deepening of the topics discussed
- 1:20in the articles of the portal. We are with the
- 1:22director Massimo Lualdi who introduces the modern
- 1:24topic. What are we talking about today? Music
- 1:27and a song symbol of the 80s. Inola Gay is the
- 1:31single that made the orchestral manoeuvres in
- 1:34the dark famous. The song, whose title refers
- 1:36to the airplane that launched the atomic bomb
- 1:38on Hiroshima, became a symbol of pacifism over
- 1:41the years, but especially at the beginning and
- 1:43in the United Kingdom it was not completely understood
- 1:45and was the source of misunderstandings and embarrassment.
- 1:59This is me in this very room. I hope you can
- 2:02see the big hair. That's horrendous. And this
- 2:04is Paul playing the keyboards. It's what we called
- 2:06keyboards. It was the biggest pile of junk shop.
- 2:08Andy Klaskei and Paul Amphraise founded the Orchestras
- 2:12Manus in the Dark in 1978 and became central
- 2:16figures in the emergence of synth -pop between
- 2:18the late 70s and early 80s. The band had already
- 2:22achieved a certain success with the first album
- 2:25and the single Electricity. But it was only with
- 2:53Enola Gay that it became famous internationally.
- 2:56The song sold more than 5 million copies all
- 2:59over the world, reached the 8th place in the
- 3:01United Kingdom and in 1981 reached the top in
- 3:04Italy and Spain, becoming in our country the
- 3:07second most sold single of the year. And our
- 3:10friends thought we were mad. So this was really
- 3:12the kind of techno geek's room where our mates
- 3:16couldn't come and mess up our songs with their
- 3:18drum solos and their lead guitars. In all again,
- 3:21in fact, it was probably the last song that we
- 3:25wrote in this. M .C .L. www .lexmcl .it from
- 4:47the famous children's program Swap Shop. Another
- 4:50potentially problematic aspect was the contrast
- 4:53between the dramatic theme and the cheerful music.
- 4:55The doubt was whether the pacifist vocation of
- 4:59the song would have been understood and whether
- 5:00the references of the text to the bombing on
- 5:04Hiroshima would have been accepted. The doubts
- 5:05were not fully revealed. Many DJs of the period
- 5:09refused to use the song during their evenings,
- 5:12but the power of the music was such that the
- 5:15song became a hit. especially in Latin countries
- 5:17like Spain and Italy, where perhaps the text
- 5:20was less understood. The song contains many references
- 5:22to the tragedy of Hiroshima and Little Boy, in
- 5:25which it is quoted, and at the same time the
- 5:27son who greets the mother and the nomenclature
- 5:29given to the bomb itself. 8 .15 is the time when
- 5:32it was unleashed, fixed forever in the clock
- 5:34of the city at the time of the explosion. You've
- 5:40been practicing, haven't you? I have. This was
- 5:42the synth we had, anyway. And everybody thought
- 5:44we were terribly technological and advanced and
- 5:46futuristic. But this is the rubbishest thing
- 5:50you've ever seen. This, in fact... If I can show
- 5:52it to you. This was from my mother's mail -order
- 5:54catalogue. We never wanted to be pop stars. Our
- 6:00raison d 'etre was... Everything we do has to
- 6:03be different to what we've just done and what
- 6:05everybody else has done. Yes, it was possible
- 6:32to feel the taste. It had the taste of lead because
- 6:35of the coating of my teeth. These are the radiations.
- 6:38I felt that taste of lead in my mouth. It was
- 6:40a great relief. I knew it exploded. Enola Gay
- 6:57Tybets was the name of the mother of Commander
- 6:59Paul Tybets. It was named so in honor of Enola,
- 7:02the protagonist of a romantic novel written in
- 7:051887, Enola or her fatal error. But unlike the
- 7:09girl in the novel, Enola Gay Tybets was a very
- 7:13serious lady with whom the son had a great relationship.
- 7:40suo nome all 'aereo, come ringraziamento per
- 7:42averlo sempre incoraggiato.
- 8:00dell 'ordigno e le in order to avoid being destroyed
- 8:04by himself. Enola Gay has been included in numerous
- 8:06lists of pacifist songs and in 2012 she was chosen
- 8:09by Danny Boyle, the director of Transpotting,
- 8:12to be used in the opening ceremony of the London
- 8:16Olympics. Thanks to the director of 7080 .it
- 8:19Massimo Lualdi for having dealt with the daily
- 8:22topic. See you in the next edition of 70 per
