Speaker 6: up at ten oh six, so Jim and I are
2:10

2:13
Speaker 6: We're not going to turn into an all sports show,
2:14
Speaker 6: all right, so just rest assured on that, but we
2:16
Speaker 6: are going to spend some time talking about that. Also.
2:19
Speaker 6: A little bit later on, our good buddy Evan Osborne
2:20
Speaker 6: from Capital Market is going to be stopping by. They
2:23
Speaker 6: are gearing up for the Christmas season and have been
2:25
Speaker 6: for some time, so we'll talk to Evan Osborne about that. Plus,

2:37
Speaker 6: nine three five five zero zero eight. But first, there
2:39
Speaker 6: is a special event coming up in the month of February,
2:42
Speaker 6: and the reason we're talking about it now is it
2:45
Speaker 6: takes a lot of time to get everything lined up
2:47
Speaker 6: for it, with sponsors and whatnot. It's called a Night
2:49
Speaker 6: to Shine and it asks a little do with the
2:53
Speaker 6: Tim Tebow Foundation. Te Bow, of course, former Florida Gator,
2:56
Speaker 6: former Heisman Trophy winner NFL Star now at College Football Analyst,
2:59
Speaker 6: and it Foundation has set out to really do a
3:02
Speaker 6: whole lot of good in the world, including this event
3:04
Speaker 6: called a Night to Shine February seventh, Capitol High and
3:07
Speaker 6: it's hosted by the Southeast Church of the Nazarene. But
3:10
Speaker 6: it's not a church event. It's a prom for special
3:13
Speaker 6: need folks. And Courtney Elswick one of the people who's
3:16
Speaker 6: helping to plan this whole thing. She joins us now
3:18
Speaker 6: in the par Mars store studio. Courtney, good morning, welcome
3:20
Speaker 6: to the show.
3:21
Speaker 3: Morning. Thank you for having me.
3:22
Speaker 6: You are rare to go this morning, are you? I
3:23
Speaker 6: am all right. We appreciate you being here. So tell
3:26
Speaker 6: us from the overall picture, what exactly is going to happen.
3:30
Speaker 7: Out there, everything to just make these individuals feel like
3:36
Speaker 7: the King and Queen that they are red carpet, paparazzi full,
3:41
Speaker 7: you know, sit down, dinner pictures, dancing, the whole thing.
3:46
Speaker 6: And where did this idea come from to do this?
3:49
Speaker 7: So the vision back in twenty fourteen is when they
3:53
Speaker 7: launched the first Night to Shine, it was, you know,
3:56
Speaker 7: on quite a smaller scale. The whole point of it
3:59
Speaker 7: was to just bring to and communities together to celebrate
4:02
Speaker 7: the love of God and those individuals in the special
4:05
Speaker 7: needs and disabled community that may not always have things
4:09
Speaker 7: like this to make it feel all about them.
4:11
Speaker 6: I mean and you and you first reached out to me,
4:14
Speaker 6: I guess a couple of months ago, and we invited
4:16
Speaker 6: you into the office here have a little meeting on
4:18
Speaker 6: how we can help you out with this. I know
4:20
Speaker 6: our I'm going to give a big shout out to
4:21
Speaker 6: the folks across the hat or sister Station V one hundred.
4:23
Speaker 6: I know Stephen, Jenny and Logan Scott and all those
4:26
Speaker 6: fine folks of V one hundred are planning on being
4:28
Speaker 6: a major major part of this as well, and so
4:31
Speaker 6: just a big hats off to them. But talk about
4:35
Speaker 6: the people that are going to be the ones that
4:37
Speaker 6: are going to be in the attentions, the ones that
4:39
Speaker 6: are going to be shining that night, these folks.
4:41
Speaker 7: So this is a completely free event for anyone ages
4:45
Speaker 7: fourteen and up, any disabilities, special needs. Again, this is
4:50
Speaker 7: just to celebrate them, show them God's love, show them community,
4:54
Speaker 7: and just that they matter so much. So again, this
4:58
Speaker 7: is a completely free event teen and up. We want
5:02
Speaker 7: them to feel like royalty.
5:04
Speaker 6: And again it's happening in February sevbur right. But the
5:07
Speaker 6: reason that we're having on you and we're going to
5:09
Speaker 6: have you on a few times, not only us, but
5:11
Speaker 6: one hundred and the other stations will as well, because
5:14
Speaker 6: now is the time when all of the heavy lifting
5:17
Speaker 6: is getting done. This is when sponsorships are needed and
5:20
Speaker 6: lining up volunteers. Talk about that.
5:23
Speaker 7: So we do have a good start for volunteers. Absolutely,
5:26
Speaker 7: the more the merrier, we cannot do this without volunteers.
5:29
Speaker 7: The more honored guests that we have, the more volunteers
5:32
Speaker 7: that are needed. So we will continue to take volunteers
5:36
Speaker 7: up until the day of They can get in touch
5:39
Speaker 7: with me, they can get in touch with the church.
5:41
Speaker 7: There are so many places that we can use volunteers.
5:44
Speaker 7: As far as sp sponsorships go, obviously, things like this
5:47
Speaker 7: take money. Sure, Again, the more individuals that we have,
5:51
Speaker 7: the more money that we're going to need. And then
5:55
Speaker 7: it's at this point just really about getting it out there,
5:58
Speaker 7: letting guests know that we're having the event so that
6:00
Speaker 7: they can get registered. We are going to need headcounts
6:03
Speaker 7: for things, make sure that we have enough crowns and
6:05
Speaker 7: trs to go around carssages and butineers buddies, because everyone
6:10
Speaker 7: that is a guest will be paired up with a
6:12
Speaker 7: non special needs individual for the night just as their buddy.
6:15
Speaker 7: They will have somebody you know at their beck and
6:18
Speaker 7: call for the entire evening.
6:20
Speaker 6: It sounds like it's going to be a great event.
6:21
Speaker 6: And again it's happening February seventh. It's at Capitol High
6:24
Speaker 6: But even though it's it's happening at Capitol High School,
6:27
Speaker 6: this is not just obviously for Capitol High students. It's
6:29
Speaker 6: open to.
6:30
Speaker 7: Anybody absolutely again fourteen and up, and that's anywhere. I believe.
6:33
Speaker 7: The last time I checked, there were only four of
6:35
Speaker 7: these happening in the state of West Virginia. So there's
6:38
Speaker 7: one in Scott Depot, there's one in Fairmont, US, there's
6:44
Speaker 7: one in Capital County at a church in Huntington. So
6:51
Speaker 7: all of those are more than welcome. Registrations open for those.
6:54
Speaker 7: But I mean, there are so many other places that
6:57
Speaker 7: don't have one close that we would be more than happy.
7:00
Speaker 6: And I want to throw this out there again. The
7:02
Speaker 6: reason we're talking with Courtney els week about this Night
7:04
Speaker 6: to Shine special needs event that's happening in February, but
7:07
Speaker 6: now's the time that you really need to get the volunteers,
7:10
Speaker 6: but you also need some help. And this is why
7:13
Speaker 6: I wanted to have you on the show this early.
7:15
Speaker 6: A Courtney was to talk about we have a lot
7:17
Speaker 6: of folks in the business community to listen to this
7:20
Speaker 6: show and all of the shows on our station. So
7:24
Speaker 6: if you are a business, and I mean they would
7:28
Speaker 6: love to have your sponsorship available, they'd love to have
7:30
Speaker 6: you be a part of and you're going to get
7:31
Speaker 6: something out of this as well, not only the touchy
7:34
Speaker 6: feely stuff that's going to come with it, but there's
7:36
Speaker 6: also going to be some added value if you are
7:38
Speaker 6: a sponsor, if you're X YSE car dealership, I'm just
7:42
Speaker 6: doing that out there or whatever, because you're going to
7:44
Speaker 6: get a whole lot of advertising and you're going to
7:46
Speaker 6: let your name out there thrown out there a lot.
7:48
Speaker 6: That's why one of the reasons why we're always here
7:51
Speaker 6: at WVRC Media Charleston, we're always happy to help out
7:54
Speaker 6: folks with anything going on in the community, but we're
7:57
Speaker 6: looking forward to getting involved with it as well. What
7:59
Speaker 6: is the best way for people that are listening right
8:02
Speaker 6: now they're saying, Look, I want to sponsor this. I
8:04
Speaker 6: want to be a part of this. I want my
8:06
Speaker 6: employees to help out. I want my kids to help out.
8:08
Speaker 6: What's the best way to get in touch with you?
8:10
Speaker 7: So they can contact me directly? Uh, I'm trying to
8:16
Speaker 7: trying to think of what my email is right now.
8:19
Speaker 7: They can email me. They can contact the church. It's
8:22
Speaker 7: Southeast Church and then Azarene on more Corporal Avenue. They
8:26
Speaker 7: can you know, they will be able to put them
8:29
Speaker 7: in touch with me. Again, I'm the main planner over this.
8:33
Speaker 7: They can find the church's Facebook page. The event itself
8:36
Speaker 7: has a Facebook page. I'm in charge of all of those.
8:38
Speaker 6: So and I shared your graphic on my on my
8:42
Speaker 6: social media pages this morning and previewing the show.
8:44
Speaker 7: So people emails on there.
8:45
Speaker 6: It's on there, It's on the poster.
8:47
Speaker 7: Okay, I want to say, it's as the Nazarene and
8:50
Speaker 7: we'll get take.
8:51
Speaker 6: Care of We'll get it to you.
8:52
Speaker 7: It's on there.
8:52
Speaker 6: But when you said that you need other volunteers, let's
8:55
Speaker 6: talk about what kind of volunteer opportunities are available.
8:58
Speaker 7: So the biggest need right now for buddies, which again
9:01
Speaker 7: are the individuals that are paired up with our honored
9:03
Speaker 7: guests to make sure that they know where they're going.
9:06
Speaker 7: Maybe some of these individuals have never been to Capitol
9:09
Speaker 7: High School. They don't know where the restrooms are, they
9:11
Speaker 7: don't know where the karaoke is going to be or
9:13
Speaker 7: the photo booth, and those buddies are going to be
9:15
Speaker 7: able to assist them with that. For the evening, there
9:19
Speaker 7: are going to be areas for the gift bags to
9:22
Speaker 7: give those out. People are going to be giving out crowns, tiaras, boutineers.
9:27
Speaker 7: This is a full sit down meal that we're going
9:29
Speaker 7: to have offered, So that's going to be catered, but
9:32
Speaker 7: we're going to need people to help serve that, clean up, photographers, paparazzi, just.
9:38
Speaker 6: All of it. And I would think that you should
9:41
Speaker 6: be able to get some volunteers from some of the
9:43
Speaker 6: other local schools. There are contemporaries of the of that
9:46
Speaker 6: you know that general age GROP because she said it's
9:48
Speaker 6: open to any age fourteen to uugh, But I mean,
9:50
Speaker 6: I would think that the students at Capitol High, the
9:52
Speaker 6: students of South Charleston, Saint Albans, any of the GW
9:56
Speaker 6: local schools may want to get involved in this as well,
9:58
Speaker 6: because there's i mean, the that would be kind of
10:02
Speaker 6: cool to have them there as well. Right, absolutely, yeah,
10:05
Speaker 6: Well the event is called a Night to Shine, and
10:08
Speaker 6: it's going to be February seventh of Capitol High And
10:10
Speaker 6: although it is open to we want to make sure
10:12
Speaker 6: people realize it's open to anyone fourteen and up with
10:17
Speaker 6: special needs. Everybody's that comes is going to have a
10:20
Speaker 6: great time. Before we close, talk about some of the
10:23
Speaker 6: things that are going to be there. You said it's
10:24
Speaker 6: going to be as much like a actual prom. Actually,
10:27
Speaker 6: the things you were telling me about most actual. There's
10:30
Speaker 6: been one hundred years since I was in since I
10:32
Speaker 6: went to a prompt. I don't think that my prom
10:36
Speaker 6: had all this stuff back in the nineteen eighty something.
10:39
Speaker 6: So you got a full set down meal, you've got
10:43
Speaker 6: the tiara's, you've got the sash of the whole deal, right.
10:46
Speaker 7: Yes, absolutely, So. There will be a karaoke station, photo booth,
10:51
Speaker 7: your standard prom pictures, the red carpet. As you walk in,
10:55
Speaker 7: they'll announce your name. Paparazzi out there taking photos of
11:00
Speaker 7: just your entrance, the you know, the main dance floor area.
11:03
Speaker 7: There will be a sensory room for some of our
11:06
Speaker 7: guests that may need a timeout or some sure that
11:09
Speaker 7: will be available. There will be therapy dogs. They're visiting
11:12
Speaker 7: US limousine services to take people on rides if they
11:16
Speaker 7: would like. There will be an area for people to
11:19
Speaker 7: get their hair and makeup touched up, shoeshine stations, just
11:23
Speaker 7: a little bit of everything.
11:24
Speaker 6: And we're going to have you on a couple times
11:25
Speaker 6: between now and then to kind of gauge the where
11:27
Speaker 6: you are in the whole process. But again, it's February
11:30
Speaker 6: seventh and Capitol High and the reason I wanted you
11:32
Speaker 6: on now is because people need to contact you if
11:34
Speaker 6: you They definitely need sponsors for this sort of thing.
11:37
Speaker 6: They need people just to help out, just as you said,
11:39
Speaker 6: just to be buddies as you call them, just to
11:41
Speaker 6: be there and to help out. It's going to be
11:42
Speaker 6: a great, great, great night, and again our sister station
11:44
Speaker 6: V one hundred is going to be a big part
11:46
Speaker 6: of that. Courtney, I appreciate you being here. I've got
11:48
Speaker 6: information again, absolutely, I've got information again posted on my
11:51

12:15
Speaker 6: time of year. You think fall would be, but I
12:17
Speaker 6: think Christmas might surpass that. We're going to talk to
12:19
Speaker 6: Evan Osborne about that and when we come back. Yeah,
12:22
Speaker 6: a lot of news in the world of WVU athletics,

Speaker 6: which Neil Brown released from his duties over the weekend.

15:54
Speaker 6: Jim Workman, our good friend from Wally and Whimpy's is here.
15:57
Speaker 6: How are you man?
15:58
Speaker 10: Doing well?
15:59
Speaker 6: Thanks Dave, first time that you've been in the new
16:00
Speaker 6: studio here. What do you think.
16:01
Speaker 10: I'm loving it, man, This is nice.
16:03
Speaker 6: We're gonna mess We're gonna mess around, have a radio
16:05
Speaker 6: station here.
16:06
Speaker 10: If we're not careful, you know, if I'm not mistaken,
16:08
Speaker 10: this is like the very historic part of the building.
16:11
Speaker 6: The whole building's historic.
16:13
Speaker 10: Well in this part specifically is probably where we're setting.
16:16
Speaker 10: Was where JFK was in sixty sixty, nineteen sixty when
16:22
Speaker 10: he came, he visited here. Oh okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:25
Speaker 10: I figured you would know.
16:27
Speaker 6: No, they don't. They don't tell me.
16:28
Speaker 10: I think it's probably right here, all right.
16:31
Speaker 6: Yeah, I didn't know that. We'll have to put a
16:33
Speaker 6: plaque or something up, correct, all right? So Jimmy really
16:37
Speaker 6: came as no one surprise. After the WV loss over
16:41
Speaker 6: the weekend at Texas Tech, the Neil Brown was relieved
16:44
Speaker 6: of his duties as coach of the Mountaineer football team.
16:48
Speaker 6: So following that defeat, and it was an absolute butt
16:52
Speaker 6: whipping at the hands of Texas Tech, the writing was
16:56
Speaker 6: pretty much on the wall for the Neil Brown air
16:58
Speaker 6: in Morgantown.
16:59
Speaker 3: Would you not agree?
17:00
Speaker 10: Yeah, I think so. I think. I mean the last
17:03
Speaker 10: issue before that game of Walies and Whippies, the cover
17:07
Speaker 10: was will Neil Brown survived Black Friday, Black Monday, whatever
17:12
Speaker 10: you call it. I think it was. It was a
17:15
Speaker 10: long shot to think that they would bring him back,
17:18
Speaker 10: and it was sealed by the second quarter. I think
17:21
Speaker 10: they just weren't competitive, and I think that's what it
17:24
Speaker 10: comes down to.
17:24
Speaker 6: Hobby said, that's exactly what Hoppy said on his show.
17:27
Speaker 6: He said that the Neil Brown eraic came to an
17:29
Speaker 6: end at halftime that game.
17:31
Speaker 10: It did. I didn't hear Hoppy.
17:33
Speaker 6: He's a smart guy, yeah, he said, Well, he said
17:35
Speaker 6: that on one of the Monday or Tuesday of this
17:36
Speaker 6: week on the show. And you know, I'm certainly not
17:40
Speaker 6: someone that's been as close to the Mountaineer program and
17:43
Speaker 6: all the movers and shakers as as.
17:45
Speaker 3: You have been.
17:45
Speaker 6: But most agree though that overall Neil Brown was was
17:50
Speaker 6: really a good dude. It just didn't work out in Morgan.
17:52
Speaker 10: You're right, you know. In Rin Baker's press conference yesterday,
17:57
Speaker 10: everything that he said about Neil Brown was outstanding. I mean,
18:01
Speaker 10: he said, if I had the script how a difficult
18:05
Speaker 10: couple of days could have gone, it would have been
18:08
Speaker 10: exactly the way it happened. He said that Neil Brown
18:11
Speaker 10: handled it with class, which you kind of expected that.
18:14
Speaker 10: I mean, he's a good guy.
18:16
Speaker 6: Nobody I've never heard anybody say anything negative off the
18:20
Speaker 6: field about Neil Brown. There was not a hint of
18:23
Speaker 6: controversy anywhere there during his tenure as mountaineer coach. No
18:27
Speaker 6: issues with recruits or doing things that he shouldn't be
18:30
Speaker 6: doing or whatever. He just genuinely seemed like a good guy.
18:34
Speaker 10: And if you read between the lines, you know that
18:36
Speaker 10: was about an hour long press conference and everything that
18:39
Speaker 10: he said that he's looking for in a coach, I mean,
18:42
Speaker 10: Neil Brown checked all the boxes except one that's winning. Yeah,
18:46
Speaker 10: I mean everything that he wanted off the field, you know,
18:50
Speaker 10: as far as a good guy, he said he wanted
18:52
Speaker 10: somebody with integrity. That was a non negotiable. He wanted
18:57
Speaker 10: somebody that was a leader, not just a coach, you know,
19:00
Speaker 10: off the field, thinking about academics and life enrichment, things
19:05
Speaker 10: like that. That was Neil Brown. But the wins didn't
19:09
Speaker 10: match up, and they had to move on.
19:12
Speaker 6: Doctor Jim Workman of Wally and Whimby is about the
19:14
Speaker 6: WVU football coaching situation at Dave Island, showing five eighty
19:17
Speaker 6: life brought to you in part by Fresh Air Filters

19:26
Speaker 6: Filters dot us because everyone deserves fresh air. All right.
19:30
Speaker 6: So now the big question is, mister Workman, what's next.
19:34
Speaker 10: You know, it's really going to be exciting. I mean,
19:37
Speaker 10: in this era that we're in. I mean, there's just
19:40
Speaker 10: so many things to consider because you know, there's no
19:44
Speaker 10: reaching out and getting a don Neelan from the Michigan
19:48
Speaker 10: staff and having him coach your football team. Way more
19:52
Speaker 10: dynamics than that. You have to get somebody that is
19:55
Speaker 10: a motivator. As far as fundraising. You know, they have
19:59
Speaker 10: to be successful.
20:00
Speaker 6: It's not x's and o's just x's and o's anymore.
20:02
Speaker 10: That's right, That's right. So and then you have all
20:05
Speaker 10: these other things. Think about this, right before the first
20:08
Speaker 10: game of the season, how much excitement was in Morgantown
20:12
Speaker 10: when Penn State was coming. Pat McAfee brought a lot
20:15
Speaker 10: of that excitement in and that's the type of guys
20:18
Speaker 10: that are going to have some influence. Pat McAfee, he's
20:22
Speaker 10: already talking about it on his national show, probably the
20:25
Speaker 10: highest RTED podcast or show in the nation. And you know,
20:29
Speaker 10: not only that, but Adam pac Man Jones is talking
20:31
Speaker 10: to people. He had rich Rodriguez on his show this week,
20:34
Speaker 10: pushing for Rich Rod because he played with him. I mean,
20:37
Speaker 10: you've got so many people. This is a national program
20:40
Speaker 10: now that really has an opportunity because it is a
20:44
Speaker 10: watered down Big twelve. They have an opportunity to get
20:47
Speaker 10: in that top sixteen seed and that's where the big money,
20:50
Speaker 10: that's where the TV money and all the attention comes from.
20:53
Speaker 6: And I think it's interesting that you bring that up.
20:55
Speaker 6: And I'm going to make a statement here, and I
20:57
Speaker 6: don't want to upset people when I say this question. Uh,
21:01
Speaker 6: I guess is the job though in Morgantown everything that
21:05
Speaker 6: is cracked up to be now hear me out on
21:06
Speaker 6: this because in West Virginia and Ren Baker talked about
21:10
Speaker 6: that in this press conference yesterday. We don't have a
21:13
Speaker 6: pro team. You know, there are those of us that
21:15
Speaker 6: follow our pro teams. Sorry you're a Browns fan, uh,
21:19
Speaker 6: but a lot of Steeler fans, Bengals fans, whatever. We
21:21
Speaker 6: get all wrapped up in our teams, but not necessarily
21:23
Speaker 6: we don't have that pro team. People look to WVU
21:26
Speaker 6: and look, I'm a Marshall guy one hundred percent. However,
21:29
Speaker 6: I understand the way the dynamics work out. It's West
21:31
Speaker 6: Virginia and in one at one and and Marshall at
21:35
Speaker 6: second and the others after that. I completely get that.
21:38
Speaker 6: Is is the is the you you think this job
21:41
Speaker 6: is really all it's cracked up to be in what
21:43
Speaker 6: Mountaineer fans make it out to be.
21:45
Speaker 10: Well, I'll recall a statement that ren Baker made yesterday
21:49
Speaker 10: which was impactful. So there's two ways to answer your question.
21:52
Speaker 10: In the state of West Virginia, he said, this is
21:55
Speaker 10: a big decision because it's a financial commitment and it's
21:59
Speaker 10: a finantial windfall potentially for the university. But then very interesting,
22:04
Speaker 10: he said, it's big for the health and the morale
22:08
Speaker 10: of the state. Think about that. I mean, people do
22:13
Speaker 10: care about the football program. Yeah, and they come to
22:16
Speaker 10: work on Monday morning and at the water cooler they
22:19
Speaker 10: either have the long face or they're doing high fives.
22:23
Speaker 10: That was a really unique statement coming from an athletic
22:28
Speaker 10: director about a coaching Chaine that's on their mind. So nationally,
22:32
Speaker 10: I think it has potential to be a top twenty
22:34
Speaker 10: five program only because if you think back when they
22:37
Speaker 10: were in the Big East and they were doing well
22:40
Speaker 10: and they were top ranked in the Top ten, I
22:43
Speaker 10: mean that was the type of competition they were playing
22:46
Speaker 10: what they are playing now in the Big twelve. So
22:48
Speaker 10: potentially you can be a nine or ten win team consistently. Now,
22:53
Speaker 10: if you do it right, you.
22:55
Speaker 6: Want to talk with Jim Workman of Wally Wipe's all right,
22:58
Speaker 6: since you want ahead it and brought up the name Trod.
23:01
Speaker 6: What I have found in talking to people and what
23:03
Speaker 6: I've seen on social media and so on and so forth,
23:05
Speaker 6: is the names that I hear more than any others
23:07
Speaker 6: are the return to Rich Rodriguez or Jimbo Fisher. Now,
23:11
Speaker 6: I talked to somebody yesterday pretty close to the program.
23:16
Speaker 6: I mean, very very close to the program. I talked
23:18
Speaker 6: to yesterday who said to me, there is zero chance
23:20
Speaker 6: that Jimbo Fisher gets this job in Morgantown. Now, everybody's
23:25
Speaker 6: been proven wrong before your thoughts on a Jimbo or
23:28
Speaker 6: a Rich Rod or someone else.
23:30
Speaker 10: Here's here's my answer to that. Last week, Thursday Thanksgiving
23:35
Speaker 10: dinner was amazing. It tasted great by Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
23:39
Speaker 10: I didn't want any part of that.
23:42
Speaker 6: I think leave it to you to come up with
23:43
Speaker 6: a food analogy.
23:45
Speaker 10: I think that's rich Rod. I don't think you want
23:47
Speaker 10: the leftovers after several days. It was great back in
23:51
Speaker 10: the day. That day was amazing. I don't think we
23:54
Speaker 10: want to go back there.
23:55
Speaker 6: And people have short memories. I mean, Rich Rod did
23:57
Speaker 6: not exactly leave here, you know, with a lot of fanfare,
24:00
Speaker 6: and there was a lot of bad blood. Of course,
24:03
Speaker 6: sports fans have some of the shortest memories in the world.
24:07
Speaker 6: You know, they're willing to let buy guns be buy guns.
24:10
Speaker 6: He is a West Virginia guy. But something that was
24:12
Speaker 6: pointed out in the article that I read in the
24:14
Speaker 6: Gazette Mail yesterday was, you know, rich is not a
24:17
Speaker 6: young guy by coaching standards. I mean, he's sixty, okay,
24:22
Speaker 6: and that's not old by any stretch of the imagination.
24:24
Speaker 6: That's kind of you and I are headed that way.
24:28
Speaker 6: But you know, do we need somebody who's going to
24:32
Speaker 6: be a little younger, who maybe not as traveled. I
24:35
Speaker 6: don't know.
24:36
Speaker 10: I think you have to listen. I think Rin Baker
24:39
Speaker 10: again in his press conference, sas he's cast a wide net.
24:43
Speaker 10: He's looking at a lot of things, but he's in
24:45
Speaker 10: the next couple of days he's going to narrow that.
24:47
Speaker 10: And you know, Rich does have a lot of support
24:50
Speaker 10: from people like you know, pac Man Jones and Pat
24:54
Speaker 10: McAfee and Ken Kendrick, probably the owner of the Arizona Diamondback,
25:00
Speaker 10: who has a deep pockets so reportedly he's a huge
25:04
Speaker 10: Rich Rod fan, and you know, those type of people
25:07
Speaker 10: could see an opportunity to talk to Rin Baker and
25:10
Speaker 10: at least get him an interview.
25:12
Speaker 6: But what about Jimbo Fisher.
25:14
Speaker 10: I don't know about Jimbo's contract well enough to know
25:19
Speaker 10: if that is feasible, because Texas A and M still
25:22
Speaker 10: owes him a ton of money, and I believe if
25:25
Speaker 10: he takes another job, I don't know if that also
25:28
Speaker 10: includes like a consulting type position or you know, an
25:33
Speaker 10: assistant to the ad. But he cannot coach and still
25:37
Speaker 10: collect that huge paycheck that he's getting right now. So
25:41
Speaker 10: it would be reduced. So, you know, what do you
25:44
Speaker 10: do if you're jim But I think he's interested. What
25:46
Speaker 10: the scenario that I would love to see is either
25:49
Speaker 10: a Nick Saban or a Jimbo Fisher get involved with
25:52
Speaker 10: the WU football program and bring along a mentor or
25:56
Speaker 10: mentor a coach, a young guy who's the next coming
26:00
Speaker 10: guy and be with him for a couple of years,
26:03
Speaker 10: go out on these visits with him, get some minil money,
26:06
Speaker 10: and they can make an impact without being on the sideline.
26:10
Speaker 6: Speaking of nil, text says without nil money, WVU will
26:14
Speaker 6: not be able to compete on the national scale.
26:16
Speaker 10: Nobody can. There's not a team that can compete without
26:20
Speaker 10: nil money. That's coming.
26:22
Speaker 6: For those who don't know, we throw a lot of
26:25
Speaker 6: a lot of sports terms, sports guys, nil's name, image
26:28
Speaker 6: and likeness. That's right, And basically this is the money
26:32
Speaker 6: that you see athletes that come in and they get
26:35
Speaker 6: paid to endorse certain products or they get to do,
26:37
Speaker 6: you know, certain appearance fees or whatever. This was something
26:41
Speaker 6: that was taboo although we all know it was going on,
26:44
Speaker 6: it was taboo for years and it looks like now
26:47
Speaker 6: they're finally starting to get a handle on this at
26:50
Speaker 6: least they're heading in that direction because for the first
26:51
Speaker 6: couple of years of NIL, not only at WVU, I
26:55
Speaker 6: mean certainly at other places, it was wild wide west.
26:57
Speaker 6: I mean there were no rules or whatever. More college
27:00
Speaker 6: are now getting nil people that this is what they do.
27:04
Speaker 6: I know former Marshalls standout Stevie Browning's kind of handling
27:07
Speaker 6: this from Marshall University right now. But that's a good
27:10
Speaker 6: point by the texture of them.
27:11
Speaker 10: The other dynamic about in IL is the transfer portal. Yeah,
27:17
Speaker 10: if you are not in the starting lineup as a freshman,
27:20
Speaker 10: and you think that you deserve to be, you're going
27:23
Speaker 10: to look around and see, you know, where can I
27:26
Speaker 10: get INIL money or where can I increase my value
27:30
Speaker 10: with playing time? And I need to go over there
27:33
Speaker 10: and have you know, my junior and senior years to
27:36
Speaker 10: collect this INIOL money. It is the wild wild West.
27:38
Speaker 6: It has changed, I mean so much over the last
27:41
Speaker 6: couple of years. I had somebody in the world of
27:44
Speaker 6: college football who told me several months ago that college
27:46
Speaker 6: football has changed more in the last five six years
27:50
Speaker 6: than what it has in the previous fifty. The only
27:53
Speaker 6: other changes we had were maybe TV contracts or the
27:56
Speaker 6: equipment got better, or more emphasis on concussion protocols and
27:59
Speaker 6: things like that's really the only thing that changed. But
28:02
Speaker 6: this has changed everything. And for a sports fan, whether
28:06
Speaker 6: it's and it could be basketball, football is obviously because
28:08
Speaker 6: there's more players. The Mountaineer team that was put on
28:13
Speaker 6: the field this year, no matter what, no matter who
28:16
Speaker 6: the coach is, is not going to be the Mountaineer
28:17
Speaker 6: team next year. And you know, we're used to the
28:20
Speaker 6: old days when you see a guy that comes in
28:21
Speaker 6: as a true freshman right out of high school and
28:24
Speaker 6: you red shirty or whatever, and you said, well this
28:27
Speaker 6: guy or this it's you know, female athlet is, this
28:29
Speaker 6: person is going to be great by the time they
28:32
Speaker 6: get to be a sophomore. Well, their chances are they're
28:34
Speaker 6: not going to be there when they're a sophomore. The
28:36
Speaker 6: teams don't even I mean, look at the Mountaineer basketball team,
28:38
Speaker 6: I mean, who are these guys last year, you know,
28:40
Speaker 6: I mean, nobody is a completely starting lineup.
28:43
Speaker 10: They brought one guy back on, one guy on the
28:45
Speaker 10: whole roster. Now, I'll also say about Marshall. Marshall had
28:49
Speaker 10: forty new players on its football team this year. Marshall
28:53
Speaker 10: did I mean that is going to be the regular
28:58
Speaker 10: for everybody. I mean, you're going to have a turnover
29:01
Speaker 10: between thirty and forty players every year. You may as
29:04
Speaker 10: well get used to it.
29:05
Speaker 6: It's the times. They are a change. And before we
29:08
Speaker 6: let you go, let's talk about the players for WVU
29:12
Speaker 6: right now? How many? I mean, because you were telling
29:14
Speaker 6: me as I went up to get you out of
29:16
Speaker 6: the green room, you were kind of scrolling social media
29:18
Speaker 6: and I saw on the Mountaineer Football Facebook page earlier.
29:21
Speaker 6: I think I actually posted overnight about all these players
29:23
Speaker 6: that have committed. They've been all committed. Where do we
29:25
Speaker 6: stand on the players from this year's team?
29:28
Speaker 10: You know, that's it's good news for Mountaineer fans. I
29:31
Speaker 10: was checking my email and I'm getting press releases from
29:34
Speaker 10: WVU from seven to fifteen this morning, all the way
29:37
Speaker 10: up until the time that I walked in here. They're
29:39
Speaker 10: releasing that people are signing today. It's the first college
29:43
Speaker 10: signing day of this recruiting season today. And one of
29:47
Speaker 10: the names that I saw on there was Zod Jackson
29:49
Speaker 10: from Huntington, so he stuck his commitment. He is coming
29:53
Speaker 10: to Morgantown. I think Rin Baker as well, yesterday said
29:57
Speaker 10: that after Neil Brown's firing, dismissal, whatever, they had people
30:02
Speaker 10: on the staff reaching out to these recruits letting them know, hey,
30:05
Speaker 10: you're still our guy, and we still want you, and
30:08
Speaker 10: we're solid, we're moving forward. They painted a good positive
30:12
Speaker 10: picture and they are retaining the recruits.
30:14
Speaker 6: It seems I'm mean, knock out a couple of texts
30:16
Speaker 6: here before we let you get the I'm gonna let
30:18
Speaker 6: you do a litt commercial for West Virginia's premier of
30:21
Speaker 6: sports publication, Wiley and Whippees Texas. David ren Baker's description
30:25
Speaker 6: of the economic scope of the WVU football coaches spot on.
30:28
Speaker 6: I had an economics professor in college who made a
30:31
Speaker 6: compelling argument that when WVU football or basketball wins, it
30:34
Speaker 6: improves the economy of West Virginia by ten to twenty
30:38
Speaker 6: percent for a couple of days following the game, and
30:41
Speaker 6: if Marshall also wins, the financial impact is even bigger.
30:44
Speaker 10: Yes, I agree.
30:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, speaking to Marshall, think about my guy, coach Huff.
30:49
Speaker 6: I mean, they were ready to run him off the
30:51
Speaker 6: rails out of town and now they're playing for the
30:55
Speaker 6: Sun Belt Conference championship. On Saturday night, he's winning award
30:58
Speaker 6: after award. It may be gone after the season.
31:01
Speaker 10: Yeah, it's pretty cool. I mean, I like coach Huff.
31:03
Speaker 10: I like Christian Spears the ad down there as much
31:07
Speaker 10: as I do Rin Baker. I think both of our
31:09
Speaker 10: major programs in the state are in good hands. I
31:13
Speaker 10: don't know about Huff. I think it's concerning that they
31:16
Speaker 10: let his contract expire, or he let it expire without
31:20
Speaker 10: an extension. But he'll look around. I hope that he
31:24
Speaker 10: doesn't do a side move to like a Southern Miss
31:29
Speaker 10: something like that that's been not really a move up.
31:31
Speaker 10: I mean, I mean it's still in the sun Belt,
31:33
Speaker 10: except they're in the cellar. Why would you go from
31:35
Speaker 10: the top team to the cellar for a perceived better situation.
31:40
Speaker 10: I don't know. So I think he'll have some interest
31:43
Speaker 10: going forward, but you're always going to and as Baker
31:46
Speaker 10: said the other day, you want other schools to want
31:49
Speaker 10: your coaches because you're doing well.
31:51
Speaker 6: All right, final checks for you. It says NIL has
31:54
Speaker 6: ruined amateur college sports. The NIL has turned universities into
31:57
Speaker 6: the haves and have nots. No coach is worth over
32:00
Speaker 6: thirteen million dollars, like Kirby Smart at Georgia is receiving
32:03
Speaker 6: very sad.
32:05
Speaker 10: I'd agree with a lot of it. I don't know
32:06
Speaker 10: that I would use the word ruin. It's changed it definitely,
32:10
Speaker 10: but we're all trying to get our hands around us.
32:14
Speaker 6: I don't know, all right, And I do want to
32:15
Speaker 6: mention again that Reren Baker is scheduled to be the
32:17

36:35
Speaker 3: What did sir? How are you?
36:36
Speaker 6: I am fine? What's uh? What's new at the Capitol Market?
36:40
Speaker 2: Oh?
36:40
Speaker 6: We could just spend three hours talking about that, but
36:42
Speaker 6: I know you're gearing up. As I said earlier. You know,
36:45
Speaker 6: the Christmas season is obviously one one of, if not
36:48
Speaker 6: the biggest times of the year for Capital Market.
36:51
Speaker 12: So for sure's going on from you know, sourcing the
36:54
Speaker 12: trees that we sell at the market, to providing two
36:59
Speaker 12: hundred plus tree for Holly Jolly Braley to uh, you know,
37:03
Speaker 12: turning our attention back in we're towards the market. The
37:08
Speaker 12: holidays for us are a chance to, you know, every year,
37:12
Speaker 12: bring it all together and really celebrate just the amazing growers, producers, artisans,
37:21
Speaker 12: culinary experts.
37:22
Speaker 3: That make the market so special.
37:24
Speaker 12: And last year, for the first time, we put together
37:30
Speaker 12: this holiday village concept, which was a way to kind
37:33
Speaker 12: of bring all of those items together, and we were
37:37
Speaker 12: just blown away by the response. And so this year
37:40
Speaker 12: we're this Friday, we're bringing it back for the second installment.
37:45
Speaker 12: Each weekend this year will feature live entertainment, starting Friday
37:50
Speaker 12: with Karna It's a Salsavan Saturday carpenter ants. The following
37:54
Speaker 12: weekend is Hot Jazz of Charleston, and then we're gonna
37:59
Speaker 12: wrap it up with one of my favorite local bands,
38:01
Speaker 12: of Golden and then just like last year, we'll be
38:04
Speaker 12: rotating a curated group of artisans. It's an opportunity to
38:12
Speaker 12: buy things that you can't get anywhere else. These are
38:16
Speaker 12: really really great items that I have it on.
38:21
Speaker 3: Good authority for my wife, made perfect Christmas.
38:24
Speaker 12: So and then really just the icing on the cake
38:27
Speaker 12: for us is just an incredible food lineup featuring all
38:33
Speaker 12: of our vendors inside and out. We're bringing in some
38:36
Speaker 12: friends like we always do. The thing I'm probably most
38:40
Speaker 12: excited about this year is growing up in coastal North Carolina.
38:43
Speaker 12: We're gonna have fresh oysters and it's a perfect time
38:46
Speaker 12: of year for them, and I'm very, very excited.
38:49
Speaker 6: You know, speaking of oysters. I spent a lot of
38:51
Speaker 6: time talking about Thanksgiving food because I'm a foodie, and
38:54
Speaker 6: I brought up with one of the guests I had
38:55
Speaker 6: on the show that when my mother made oyster, I
38:57
Speaker 6: made dressing, I'm sorry that you put oysters in it.
39:00
Speaker 6: And I found that people are like, what do you
39:02
Speaker 6: put oyster? And you know, I grew up in a
39:04
Speaker 6: cold camp in Logan County. You know, well not exactly
39:06
Speaker 6: the fresh seafood capital of the war whatever the guy
39:11
Speaker 6: in dot you know, washed up on the stream. But
39:14
Speaker 6: but yeah, that's the way, that's the way we made
39:16
Speaker 6: them oysters. You can cook, You can do a lot
39:18
Speaker 6: with oysters. You can put them a lot of different things,
39:19
Speaker 6: I mean, other than just your you know, traditional eating
39:22
Speaker 6: oysters as they are. I was on your social media
39:24
Speaker 6: and your Facebook page and I was looking at some
39:26
Speaker 6: of the things that you've got with this big holiday
39:28
Speaker 6: extravaganza on Friday, some of the food, and again, for me,
39:30
Speaker 6: it all goes back to the food. So let's talk
39:33
Speaker 6: about the food fair that you've got there.
39:35
Speaker 3: Yep.
39:36
Speaker 12: So last year, as we were developing this concept on
39:43
Speaker 12: the fly, we thought it would be a really unique
39:46
Speaker 12: opportunity to feature items that.
39:50
Speaker 3: The public can go and make from all of our vendors.
39:53
Speaker 12: And one of the things that we wanted to do
39:57
Speaker 12: was highlight how folks can use the product that we
40:02
Speaker 12: sell at the market in ways that they may not
40:04
Speaker 12: have thought of.
40:05
Speaker 3: So this year we built upon that and.
40:10
Speaker 12: I'm gonna excuse me, put Johnny's Meat Market out there
40:14
Speaker 12: as a bright shining example. Last uh well almost two
40:19
Speaker 12: years ago now, when the Fresh Food Company closed.
40:22
Speaker 3: It left sort of uh seafood, fresh food.
40:26
Speaker 12: Really unavailable within the market, and Johnny's was quick to
40:29
Speaker 12: pick up the torch on that. And so now you
40:31
Speaker 12: know they feature fresh MAYI trimp start shrimp and oysters,
40:36
Speaker 12: and so it was an opportunity for us to really
40:38
Speaker 12: highlight their new product show some folks that may not
40:43
Speaker 12: have tried it. I'm amazed too, just in surveying our staff,
40:47
Speaker 12: the number of folks that have never had a raw oyster.
40:49
Speaker 3: And so I always.
40:51
Speaker 12: Like to have the opportunity to kind of, you know,
40:56
Speaker 12: initiate that into one of my favorite things. So and
41:01
Speaker 12: then you know, our our friends out at Gritz Farm
41:03
Speaker 12: out in Putnam County, they've got just a fantastic chef.
41:08
Speaker 12: But the guy a guy named Steve Owens, and so
41:10
Speaker 12: he's making homemade pretzels and homemade pretzels. The pictures I've
41:15
Speaker 12: seen it. I've not tried it yet, but I'm very much.
41:17
Speaker 6: Like I'm a sucker for I'm a sucker for anything
41:19
Speaker 6: food related, but especially pretzels.
41:21
Speaker 12: And and then you know, working with Venue at me
41:25
Speaker 12: a Cupa and Ted Armbrick at the wine shop curating
41:27
Speaker 12: some some seasonal drinks. You'll be able to get, you know,
41:30
Speaker 12: a hot mauled cider. You can have it spiked, you
41:32
Speaker 12: can have it not spiked. Uh, just there there, There
41:36
Speaker 12: really is something for everyone. We've got some kids programming
41:39
Speaker 12: from Crafts to Morgan Morrison's coming in next week to
41:42
Speaker 12: make adult ginger bread houses. I'm very excited to see
41:46
Speaker 12: how that turned.
41:46
Speaker 6: Okay, I'm gonna have to have Morgan on to talk
41:48
Speaker 6: adult ginger bread houses. We're leaving it at that, I mean, yeah, yeah,
41:53
Speaker 6: well probably you should, but she'll kill it just like
41:56
Speaker 6: she always does. And I and you know, the Chris
42:00
Speaker 6: season around Charleston. I was going to get to this
42:03
Speaker 6: a little bit later on, and certainly we'll get to
42:05
Speaker 6: it on tomorrow show tomorrow Charleston. If you want to
42:08
Speaker 6: get to downtown Charleston tomorrow, you might want to leave
42:12
Speaker 6: now because we got the Transabbian Orchestra show with at
42:16
Speaker 6: the Coddle Semen Convention Center. We have the Charleston Christmas Parade,
42:19
Speaker 6: which is at seven o'clock tomorrow night. All these you know,
42:23
Speaker 6: there's still even though Holly Jolly Bradley had their big
42:26
Speaker 6: event last weekend. The trees stay up, you know, and
42:29
Speaker 6: so that's going on. Of course I haven't even even
42:31
Speaker 6: mentioned the light the night over, the ballpark. All these
42:34
Speaker 6: things going on at one time. And now you add
42:37
Speaker 6: to it with what's going on at Capitol.
42:39
Speaker 12: Mark for sure, and it's just a fantastic time of
42:43
Speaker 12: year in Charleston. It feels a risk ascenting cliche, very
42:47
Speaker 12: much like a Hallmark movie. And yeah, if it doesn't
42:53
Speaker 12: put you in the Christmas spirit, I look inward, see
42:56
Speaker 12: why you're not. You're not you're not filled with cheer
43:00
Speaker 12: for us in the context of you know, coming into
43:03
Speaker 12: the end of the year, it's an opportunity not just
43:06
Speaker 12: for us to bring all of our friends in and
43:08
Speaker 12: really showcase what the market's all about, but it's for
43:12
Speaker 12: us a great way to cap off what has just
43:14
Speaker 12: been a really fantastic year for the market and from
43:19
Speaker 12: welcoming Welcoming Bogies. We have not announced this yet. I'm
43:23
Speaker 12: actually announcing this for the first time, but we were
43:26
Speaker 12: just added to the National Register of Historic Places, so
43:28
Speaker 12: we received notification from the National Park Service that is cool,
43:32
Speaker 12: about a week ago. We will be doing a formal
43:35
Speaker 12: announcement with that. But it's a way for us, you know,
43:40
Speaker 12: as a five oh one C three, to preserve the
43:43
Speaker 12: integrity of what makes the building so special.
43:45
Speaker 6: Okay, we'll have to ask you a hold on just
43:46
Speaker 6: one second because you have a phone call, sir. Oh, okay,
43:49
Speaker 6: all right, Murph, if you're ready, let's go to Kim
43:52
Speaker 6: from Charleston. You're on with Evan Osborne.
43:54
Speaker 3: Go ahead, I Kim, good morning.
43:56
Speaker 2: I was just calling to find how can I know when.
44:00
Speaker 3: The flower farms guy is going.
44:02
Speaker 12: To be at the market, so he will be open
44:04
Speaker 12: through the end of the season, just following our normal
44:08
Speaker 12: operating hours. His name's Adam from Mountain State Flower Farm
44:12
Speaker 12: and he's generally there most days from ten am to
44:14
Speaker 12: six pm most nights this time of year, even longer
44:17
Speaker 12: if he's got a workshop going on.
44:20
Speaker 6: Okay, all right, thank.
44:21
Speaker 3: You, You're very welcome.
44:23
Speaker 12: And for folks that don't know, Adam is a flower
44:26
Speaker 12: grower throughout the warmer parts of the year and a
44:30
Speaker 12: couple of years ago, I believe this is the third
44:31
Speaker 12: year now we've built a pop up Christmas shop. So
44:34
Speaker 12: if you see this giant structure under the outdoor market,
44:37
Speaker 12: that's actually a greenhouse and so it's a way for
44:40
Speaker 12: him to kind of set up shop and do what
44:43
Speaker 12: he does throughout the holiday season. And if you haven't
44:45
Speaker 12: seen his stuff, he makes really great live reese featuring
44:49
Speaker 12: magnolia fresh pine. He's got a little something for everyone.
44:52
Speaker 6: All right, can we appreciate you calling Evan. We're gonna
44:54
Speaker 6: have to wrap it up here, but give us the particulars.
44:57
Speaker 12: On Friday, absolutely, holiday village starts six pm, goes to
45:01
Speaker 12: a nine pm. We do it again Saturday night. Each
45:04
Speaker 12: each weekend's totally different. So if you went once, come
