- 0:06Speaker 2: Good Morning Life from Jimmy's on First, across the street
- 0:08Speaker 2: from Woomenfield headlines, I've brought to you by Frost Crude
- 0:11Speaker 2: Corps Light.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Choose chill and we will choose chill.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Marion's yesterday to run Homer by Mitch Garber. This was
- 0:25Speaker 2: all Emerson Hancock needed. Mars completed five and one home
- 0:33Speaker 2: stand with a four and I think went over Toronto
- 0:34Speaker 2: across the street from here in Soto. That Mitz Garbor
- 0:36Speaker 2: home run was all Emerson Hancock needed. Gabe Spyron under
- 0:39Speaker 2: its munhos finished up the shutout, Hancock career high seven innings,
- 0:44Speaker 2: no runs, only two hits allow the Mariners on a
- 0:46Speaker 2: plane to Florida begin a three game series tomorrow Miami
- 0:49Speaker 2: three games over five hundred game and a half up
- 0:52Speaker 2: over Texas in the American League West. So it's really
- 0:56Speaker 2: on down here in Soto. Already, fans are at Jimmy's
- 0:59Speaker 2: on First, across the street from Womenfield in their team
- 1:02Speaker 2: USA gear US in Belgium for a spot in the
- 1:04Speaker 2: World Cup quarterfinals. To place the Americans had been a
- 1:06Speaker 2: winning one time in modern history. A FIFA disciplinary committee
- 1:12Speaker 2: suspended Floe Baligan's won game suspension he got for the
- 1:16Speaker 2: controversial red card if against Basnia Herzegovina in the round
- 1:19Speaker 2: of thirty two last week. That happened if the President
- 1:22Speaker 2: Trump reportedly called FIFA President Gianni Infantino. FIFA also gave
- 1:27Speaker 2: Belgium the right to submit a formal appeal of its decision.
- 1:30Speaker 2: That appeal was due by five am Pacific this morning,
- 1:33Speaker 2: so there may be more on this. First match today
- 1:36Speaker 2: in the round of sixteen is Spain versus the rabble
- 1:38Speaker 2: Portugal here at noon on the West Coast time. Yesterday
- 1:43Speaker 2: had to work on England Mexico absolute banger. England wins
- 1:46Speaker 2: three two, defending with only ten men for the last
- 1:48Speaker 2: fifty minutes. Harry Kane became the first man ever to
- 1:52Speaker 2: score in a penalty kick and concede a penalty kick
- 1:54Speaker 2: in the same World Cup match. Mexico has now played
- 1:57Speaker 2: ninety matches all time in the Stadio was Teca as
- 2:00Speaker 2: the national team. That was only their third loss ever
- 2:03Speaker 2: in a Teca. England will face Norway Saturday in Miami
- 2:07Speaker 2: in the quarterfinals. That's because Norway eliminatee storied Brazil tou
- 2:10Speaker 2: Nil earlying holl In both goals, he Lionel Messi, Chilling
- 2:13Speaker 2: and Bappi all of seven goals. The leader race for
- 2:15Speaker 2: the World Cup Golden Budda, the top goal scorer Brazil
- 2:19Speaker 2: starting Nymar announced after yesterday's match that he's retiring. The
- 2:23Speaker 2: Seahawks rookies are reported to due to report a training
- 2:26Speaker 2: camp in eleven days on July seventeenth. The veterans report
- 2:29Speaker 2: July twenty fourth, and the first practice at the Virginia
- 2:32Speaker 2: Mason Athletics Center is July twenty fifth. And now on
- 2:36Speaker 2: with the Monday show.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Hold on, I think there was something missing from this headline.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Wild Blitfield.
- 2:49Speaker 4: That was crushed Mitch Garber's fourth home run.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Speaking of homers, all the Americans, it's didn't the lead,
- 2:57Speaker 1: it's three to nine things.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I'm across the street from Lumenfield. There are already people
- 3:02Speaker 2: walking down Occidental Avenue outside and we'd love to say
- 3:05Speaker 2: stars and stripes. There's a dude, we're stars and stripes
- 3:08Speaker 2: coulottes and say.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Can I have them? I want them?
- 3:13Speaker 2: I thought you would like that stars on one side
- 3:16Speaker 2: and stripes on the other Yeah, they're already down here
- 3:19Speaker 2: seven hours before kickoff of the United States and Belgium.
- 3:24Speaker 2: This has only happened, the opportunity to even do this
- 3:27Speaker 2: has only happened once in the modern World Cup history.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Only once is the United States gone this far with
- 3:32Speaker 2: a chance to win and go to the quarterfinals, which
- 3:34Speaker 2: they've done only in two thousand and two when they
- 3:37Speaker 2: lost to Germany in the quarterfinals round of eight. That's
- 3:39Speaker 2: what they're playing for today. And I mean, Jess, when
- 3:43Speaker 2: this was setting up the whole time, even back day back,
- 3:47Speaker 2: big deal. It's such a big deal, and it's for sports,
- 3:51Speaker 2: not even for a soccer fan. It's a big deal.
- 3:53Speaker 2: This was setting up way back. And when we saw
- 3:56Speaker 2: the World Cup schedule come out, we saw and we
- 3:59Speaker 2: were talking on the show that if the United States
- 4:02Speaker 2: wins its group, they were bracketed to play in Seattle,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and if they could get to the round of sixteen,
- 4:09Speaker 2: if they could win the group, and they won a
- 4:10Speaker 2: group in two matches with a match to spare, and
- 4:13Speaker 2: they took They rested nine of their eleven regulars in
- 4:16Speaker 2: the final match against Turkey a down in Santa Clara,
- 4:20Speaker 2: and that was it. They were done down in Los
- 4:22Speaker 2: Angelescuse me, and they were done, And so we knew
- 4:26Speaker 2: after just two matches that the United States that it
- 4:28Speaker 2: could win the first knockout round would beat back here
- 4:30Speaker 2: in Seattle. Of course, international acclaim for the atmosphere June
- 4:35Speaker 2: and nineteenth when the US and Australia played here at Lumenfield,
- 4:40Speaker 2: the march on from Peer fifty eight that Jessmon was
- 4:42Speaker 2: down there for.
- 4:44Speaker 3: It was so cool.
- 4:45Speaker 2: They're doing it again. I love today.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Yeah, of course they are, because it's amazing. They should
- 4:51Speaker 5: do it every single time.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Tell everybody what that was like, because this is going
- 4:55Speaker 2: to be like three x that today.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Well it will be, yes, absolutely, But what it was like,
- 5:01Speaker 5: especially because of his Australia, USA and Ozzie's are cool
- 5:05Speaker 5: as heck, and so it was a little bit of
- 5:08Speaker 5: an easier crowd to wow.
- 5:10Speaker 3: And have fun with. But it was great.
- 5:13Speaker 5: People were out so early and every beverage you could
- 5:17Speaker 5: imagine was in their hands, whether it be coffee, whether
- 5:20Speaker 5: it be tea, whether it be some sort of adult beverage.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Everyone was having so much fun and I accidentally got
- 5:29Speaker 5: into the march. I was just trying to capture everything
- 5:34Speaker 5: for our station. You know, like how the salmon swept
- 5:41Speaker 5: upstreams sometimes. Yeah, that's what I was doing and trying
- 5:46Speaker 5: to get out of it. We had our cohorts down
- 5:48Speaker 5: here from our other stations here at iHeart, and I
- 5:53Speaker 5: just was trying so hard to not be swept up
- 5:58Speaker 5: in it because I was capturing it for the station,
- 6:01Speaker 5: doing interviews and everything, and all of a sudden I
- 6:04Speaker 5: was a part of the march and I just said,
- 6:06Speaker 5: you know.
- 6:06Speaker 3: What, let the flag fly. I'm in. I'm in, And
- 6:10Speaker 3: I loved it. I loved it so much.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So what's happening today as I understand it. I got
- 6:16Speaker 2: a note last night from the Seattle Organizing Committee for
- 6:19Speaker 2: the World Cup, separate from FIFA, is that at Fear
- 6:22Speaker 2: fifty eight the United States fans and what pre match
- 6:25Speaker 2: party goes on. And I believe Men and Blazers are
- 6:28Speaker 2: doing the show again from the.
- 6:29Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, they were phenomenal when they were down there.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I think with marsha On, Yes, I don't know if
- 6:36Speaker 2: he's coming back for that. I'm sure we'll find out
- 6:38Speaker 2: pretty so you'll hear what he has to say if
- 6:41Speaker 2: he's back there. But yes, they're supposed to do that again.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Tomorrow and or today excuse me, at Peer fifty eight
- 6:49Speaker 2: around one thirty. I believe the match is the march
- 6:52Speaker 2: to the match begins. Why is that because the gates
- 6:55Speaker 2: opened three hours before kickoff kickoff.
- 6:57Speaker 3: As a three.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yes, the stadium gates open three hours before. So if
- 7:02Speaker 2: you want to go down to Peer fifty eight and
- 7:04Speaker 2: see all of that, my assumption is you need to
- 7:06Speaker 2: do that before one thirty today, then the march will
- 7:09Speaker 2: be from a half hour from one to thirty to
- 7:11Speaker 2: two o'clock into the stadium. Now it's simultaneously from that
- 7:15Speaker 2: right across the street from me at Victory Hall in
- 7:17Speaker 2: the hat Bag bar and grill that the Mariner Zone
- 7:20Speaker 2: across the street from their park here along First Avenue South,
- 7:24Speaker 2: the Belgian party will be. That's been the Belgians Red
- 7:27Speaker 2: Devil's Prefunk party since the beginning of the tournament. Member.
- 7:31Speaker 2: This is the third match Belgium is played here at Lumenfield.
- 7:34Speaker 2: They have been headquartered since early June in Renton next
- 7:38Speaker 2: to at the Sounder facility at the old Longacre's Place
- 7:43Speaker 2: down in Reton. So this is a well it's not
- 7:46Speaker 2: a whole match obviously, but it's as home as they
- 7:48Speaker 2: can be away from Belgium today. This will be their
- 7:50Speaker 2: third match, and the all three matches they've had a
- 7:53Speaker 2: pre match party at Victory Hall across the street from
- 7:57Speaker 2: T Mobile Park. They're gonna be doing that the same
- 8:00Speaker 2: time about one thirty, leaving that and going in for
- 8:03Speaker 2: the match. So actually two forty five is what I'm
- 8:07Speaker 2: told that the Belgians will leave Victory Hall. Okay, So
- 8:11Speaker 2: then my my son's anecdotal experience from watching there is
- 8:15Speaker 2: that as soon as the pre party leaves is when
- 8:19Speaker 2: the American fans can swoop in and.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Watch the Oh yeah, well we are very crafty, aren't we.
- 8:27Speaker 2: So you may see a lineup if you show up
- 8:29Speaker 2: before two forty five, but then they you should be
- 8:32Speaker 2: able to get after that after the Belgians leave, although
- 8:35Speaker 2: some of them will stick around.
- 8:36Speaker 5: I became friends with every foreign person who has visited
- 8:41Speaker 5: for the World Cup, did you I.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Have, and many of them, and I'm in the press
- 8:47Speaker 2: box and in the tribunal and the mix zone afterwards,
- 8:51Speaker 2: so many of them. Of course journalists, all of them
- 8:53Speaker 2: have told me that this the World Cup Finals should
- 8:55Speaker 2: be here because of the location, on the weather, the
- 8:59Speaker 2: fact that it's not just absolutely blistering hot like it
- 9:01Speaker 2: is in the rest of the North America right now.
- 9:04Speaker 2: And the atmosphere, the stadium in downtown this is a
- 9:08Speaker 2: unique setup for the World Cup. Think about Arlington and
- 9:11Speaker 2: the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Philadelphia is even detached from
- 9:14Speaker 2: down Miami is out in Miami Gardens thirty forty minutes
- 9:17Speaker 2: from downtown Miami. That Houston's is way out by Astroworld
- 9:22Speaker 2: and next the old Astrodome thirty five minutes plus from downtown.
- 9:26Speaker 2: This in Vancouver, which I'll talk about during the show.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I was that on Thursday for Switzerland and Algeria. These
- 9:31Speaker 2: are the only two venues that are in the city
- 9:33Speaker 2: core that you could walk to that the party's bars,
- 9:36Speaker 2: restaurants are all basically attached to in short walking distance
- 9:40Speaker 2: to the stadium and mass transit and all of that,
- 9:43Speaker 2: and those I've talked to it and actually say that
- 9:46Speaker 2: is what made that. Of course, the atmosphere and the
- 9:48Speaker 2: crowds have made this the prime premiere place to what
- 9:52Speaker 2: now you could argue with Stadio was Teca I mean,
- 9:54Speaker 2: especially last night was absolutely off the hook. Just the
- 9:58Speaker 2: noise is coming through the televis as such, but even
- 10:01Speaker 2: that venue has been beset by weather delays, thunderstorms. This
- 10:06Speaker 2: has been idyllic, and today is going to be the same.
- 10:09Speaker 2: It's gonna be There isn't a cloud in the sky
- 10:11Speaker 2: in the Pacific Northwest right now.
- 10:12Speaker 3: It's beautiful.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah, it's gonna be something else anyway, at it
- 10:19Speaker 2: four nine, four to five. Well, we'll read back your
- 10:21Speaker 2: text at eleven thirty. The two questions I have right
- 10:23Speaker 2: off the top, are you watching this match today? Are
- 10:28Speaker 2: you just saying, ah, soccer, I'm not even catching I'm
- 10:30Speaker 2: not on board for this. If you are, if you're
- 10:34Speaker 2: inclined to watch it, what you think is it fair
- 10:36Speaker 2: that Flawbalagan is able to play now? And it's somewhat unprecedented,
- 10:42Speaker 2: But then you could argue Christiano Ronaldo was supposed to
- 10:44Speaker 2: be suspended for the first couple of matches of the
- 10:46Speaker 2: tournament and he wasn't after a red card and qualifying play.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But we're going to talk about that story throughout the show.
- 10:55Speaker 2: But your feelings of is that fair that I know
- 10:58Speaker 2: you're an American if you're listening to the show, most
- 11:00Speaker 2: likely you're an American and you probably all for it,
- 11:02Speaker 2: But is it right? And fair to have a red
- 11:04Speaker 2: card and then rescinded. The suspension rescinded. We're gonna talk
- 11:07Speaker 2: with Brad Adams about that at ten twenty. At eleven
- 11:10Speaker 2: o'clock we're gonna talk to Nico Evans. I'm sorry, I said, yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I know we are courting the hair.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Brad Evans former, thank you, Jesse. Brad Evans is
- 11:21Speaker 2: the former sounder in the US national team. Member of course,
- 11:24Speaker 2: now a sounders and World Cup analyst. He's going to
- 11:27Speaker 2: be joining us at ten twenty Nico Moreno about the
- 11:29Speaker 2: World Cup. At eleven o'clock we'll read back your textan
- 11:32Speaker 2: at the coming to Dodge text line at eleven thirty.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Then Ian Farness will be on. He's gonna be right here.
- 11:38Speaker 2: He's been avoiding this mayhem until Yeah, he's going to
- 11:43Speaker 2: be right in it. At noon for his show twelve
- 11:45Speaker 2: to three. Dick Fane will be down here from three
- 11:48Speaker 2: until about four thirty, and then the national broadcast from
- 11:51Speaker 2: My Heart of the pregame show will be right here
- 11:54Speaker 2: from Jimmy's at starting at four to thirty with the
- 11:55Speaker 2: match at five. All that's coming up today on up next,
- 11:59Speaker 2: Brad Adam, we'll talk to us about the World Cup,
- 12:01Speaker 2: about this match, what he feels about Flowbell, I'm gonna
- 12:04Speaker 2: have a feeling he's in favor of it, but how
- 12:06Speaker 2: he feels about the how the whole process went down.
- 12:08Speaker 2: From Red Card on, Brad Evans joins us. Next, I'm
- 12:11Speaker 2: at Jimmy's on First for our Belgian US pregame on
- 12:14Speaker 2: ninety three point three kJ RFM. Welcome back, Craig Bell,
- 12:47Speaker 2: Jessmond McIntyre with you live from Jimmy's on First, across
- 12:50Speaker 2: the street from Luminfield, where in six and a half
- 12:53Speaker 2: hours or so, the United States and Belgium we're playing
- 12:56Speaker 2: around of sixteen US trying to advance where they able
- 13:00Speaker 2: only on one other time in modern history, the quarterfinals
- 13:03Speaker 2: of the world's biggest and grandest sporting event. And it's
- 13:05Speaker 2: right here in Seattle at five o'clock today, right here
- 13:08Speaker 2: on ninety three point three KJRFM. Also right here on
- 13:10Speaker 2: ninety three point three KJRFM, brad Emans Sounders analyst, former
- 13:15Speaker 2: sounder and US team national team member. I know he's
- 13:17Speaker 2: a busy man on all kinds of shows. He joined
- 13:20Speaker 2: us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Good morning, Sorry, thanks
- 13:22Speaker 2: for joining us.
- 13:24Speaker 6: How about doing everybody?
- 13:26Speaker 2: We are great, sir, all right, I'm sure you were
- 13:28Speaker 2: asked this morning by check. I'm gonna ask you to
- 13:30Speaker 2: get anyway the whole Balgan red card situation. How you
- 13:34Speaker 2: feel this went down, whether this is a just result,
- 13:37Speaker 2: is it fair in soccer parlance, how this all went down,
- 13:41Speaker 2: and the fact he's going to play tonight.
- 13:43Speaker 7: Yeah, I think if you really break it down, obviously
- 13:46Speaker 7: there's actually been four or five players that have had
- 13:49Speaker 7: their red cards either postponed or served at a later date.
- 13:53Speaker 7: So it's not like this is a one off thing
- 13:55Speaker 7: that's never never happened before, the most recent obviously being
- 13:59Speaker 7: Christian on a Ronaldo before the tournament and then not
- 14:02Speaker 7: serving a band. He got to play in all three
- 14:05Speaker 7: games of this World Cup, So you know, it's not
- 14:07Speaker 7: like it's the first time this has happened in soccer history.
- 14:12Speaker 7: It just happens to be the hyper focused nature of it.
- 14:15Speaker 7: Being the US men's national team the day before, and
- 14:17Speaker 7: obviously with the World's Cup being held here in the
- 14:20Speaker 7: United States, it's gonna get all the attention in the world,
- 14:22Speaker 7: and Ronaldo's did too. It got all the attention in
- 14:24Speaker 7: the world. But after the fact, everyone kind of forgets
- 14:27Speaker 7: about it. I'm still a little bit confused by the rules.
- 14:32Speaker 7: I still have really, you know, I've tried to deep
- 14:34Speaker 7: dive article twenty seven and figure out what actually took place,
- 14:38Speaker 7: what can take place after the fact.
- 14:41Speaker 6: Can US soccer appeal?
- 14:43Speaker 7: Yes, there's been a lot of chirping on the political
- 14:45Speaker 7: side that all came into the picture afterwards. So and
- 14:49Speaker 7: to be honest, FIFA hasn't been very clear about how
- 14:51Speaker 7: this process went down, so that leaves a lot of
- 14:53Speaker 7: questions I think for the common fan and certainly even Belgium,
- 14:58Speaker 7: I don't think they were given a complete explaination either.
- 15:02Speaker 2: According to some reports this morning, Belgium had the opportunity
- 15:05Speaker 2: this morning by five am Pacific time to submit an
- 15:08Speaker 2: appeal to the decision of the Infractions Committee that overturned
- 15:12Speaker 2: the red card suspension for Bligan. Let me ask you
- 15:15Speaker 2: a bigger picture question, Brad, about VR in soccer and
- 15:19Speaker 2: international soccer? Is it to me feels a little bit
- 15:23Speaker 2: in truth of it. But I'm not a soccer guy.
- 15:25Speaker 2: You are, But it seems to me we've lost the
- 15:28Speaker 2: plot on var and what they're intended for To correct
- 15:31Speaker 2: clear and obvious errors rather than reofficiate plays and stop frame.
- 15:36Speaker 2: And as I understand in the Balligan case, red cards
- 15:39Speaker 2: are not supposed to be reviewed by VR in stop
- 15:41Speaker 2: or slow motion frame, but in normal time is var.
- 15:45Speaker 2: If we lost the plot on var or, how do
- 15:47Speaker 2: you feel VR is now administered in the World Cup. Yeah?
- 15:51Speaker 7: I think in most cases VR does get it right.
- 15:54Speaker 7: And for some reason this action took place. I think
- 15:57Speaker 7: if it was given a yellow card on the field
- 16:00Speaker 7: and then they said, hey, you need to review this,
- 16:02Speaker 7: and he says, okay, I saw the foul on the
- 16:03Speaker 7: field that was actually egregious. Here's a red card. I
- 16:07Speaker 7: think everyone would have been okay with that. But the
- 16:10Speaker 7: fact that there was no call on the field, then
- 16:12Speaker 7: it goes to VAR and you're, like you said in
- 16:15Speaker 7: the rules, you're not supposed to stop motion, slow it down.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Everything looks worse in slow motion.
- 16:20Speaker 7: In boxing, someone gets a ko, they slow it down
- 16:23Speaker 7: every time it looks like someone's head is going to
- 16:25Speaker 7: fall off. Well, the same thing happens in soccer too,
- 16:27Speaker 7: so it looks more egregious than it actually is. And
- 16:30Speaker 7: when you break down the play in real time, to me,
- 16:32Speaker 7: it's still not a foul. There was no action from
- 16:35Speaker 7: balligin to injure a player, or look even at the
- 16:38Speaker 7: lower body of the Bosnian defender. Both players are jostling
- 16:42Speaker 7: for the ball. It's an incidental kind of off balance step.
- 16:46Speaker 7: To me, that's not a red card for sure. But
- 16:48Speaker 7: if you slow it down and you only look at
- 16:50Speaker 7: where the foot hits the ankle, the rest of the body,
- 16:53Speaker 7: the rest of the play isn't involved, then certainly. Of course,
- 16:57Speaker 7: if you slow that down and freez fram it, it
- 16:59Speaker 7: looks like a red card challenge.
- 17:01Speaker 6: So a lot of this is up for interpretation with
- 17:03Speaker 6: the referees.
- 17:04Speaker 7: VAR ultimately, I think has done a good job of
- 17:08Speaker 7: you know, whether it's a penalty kick that should have
- 17:10Speaker 7: been called or an egregious foul that should have been reviewed.
- 17:15Speaker 7: I don't think it's taken too much away from the game.
- 17:18Speaker 7: But look, I wasn't a player while VR was around,
- 17:21Speaker 7: so I can't speak to what the players are feeling
- 17:23Speaker 7: now or for the both sides of it, playing without
- 17:25Speaker 7: it and now playing with it. In my day there
- 17:29Speaker 7: was there was no VAR, So that's the only thing.
- 17:31Speaker 6: I really know.
- 17:32Speaker 7: I only know it from an analyst perspective, where we
- 17:35Speaker 7: get a lot of stoppages in play.
- 17:36Speaker 6: It slows the game down.
- 17:38Speaker 7: We get a lot of nuance from the referee depending
- 17:41Speaker 7: on where they're from, what their background is, how many
- 17:44Speaker 7: we have stats on everything, how many yellow cards and
- 17:46Speaker 7: red cards or referee gives out per game.
- 17:48Speaker 6: You never know who you're going to get.
- 17:50Speaker 7: So yes, if it's advantageous for you, you're excited about it.
- 17:54Speaker 7: If it goes against you, you're like, why is var
- 17:57Speaker 7: in the game? I hate it? So it has drawn
- 18:00Speaker 7: a lot of attention, but again I only know what
- 18:03Speaker 7: it's like to play without it, so for me, of course,
- 18:06Speaker 7: as a player, I'd rather be without it.
- 18:08Speaker 2: It's the voice of Brad Evans, sounder, former Sounders now
- 18:11Speaker 2: current Sounders analysts, former Sounder player and US national team player,
- 18:14Speaker 2: joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline about six hours
- 18:17Speaker 2: before the United States and Belgium play in the World
- 18:19Speaker 2: Cup quarterfinals here at Leominfield in Seattle. All Right, the
- 18:22Speaker 2: match today, Brad. This will be the third time I
- 18:25Speaker 2: personally watched Belgium because this has been their home away
- 18:27Speaker 2: from home in Seattle. They've trained at the Sounders facility
- 18:30Speaker 2: down at Long Angors in Renting. I've watched them two
- 18:33Speaker 2: other times I thought Senegal ran them off the field
- 18:36Speaker 2: and I can't believe that. They still can't believe Senegal
- 18:38Speaker 2: is not in this match. But Belgium got past Senegal
- 18:42Speaker 2: with a late rally. They look slow to me. They're older,
- 18:44Speaker 2: they're in the mid thirties now, and Luke Kaku's just
- 18:47Speaker 2: a brute, but he's not exactly running up and down
- 18:49Speaker 2: the pitch. They actually took to boint out and people
- 18:52Speaker 2: don't realize that one of the stars, a generational star
- 18:55Speaker 2: for Belgium, left the match in the fifty ninth minute
- 18:58Speaker 2: before they rallied from two nil down to beat Senegal.
- 19:02Speaker 2: What are you expecting today? What do you expect the
- 19:04Speaker 2: US and coach Pochattina try to exploit in Belgium today?
- 19:08Speaker 7: Well, I don't think it's going to be a Belgium
- 19:10Speaker 7: team that sits in. Most of the teams the US
- 19:12Speaker 7: has faced so far, they've really sat in. I think
- 19:15Speaker 7: Belgium's going to try and play their game. They'll play
- 19:17Speaker 7: through de Bruyna the best that they can. Yes, like
- 19:20Speaker 7: you said, aging legs from de Bruyna, but still, in
- 19:22Speaker 7: my opinion, the best passer in this tournament. He'll pick
- 19:25Speaker 7: out anyone at any point, and we have trusts Ard
- 19:28Speaker 7: and Doku on the wings, they are rapid. You've got
- 19:32Speaker 7: Trussard who just won an EPL title with Arsenal, and
- 19:36Speaker 7: you've got Doku who last year won with Manchester City.
- 19:39Speaker 7: So these are top top quality players in the world. Defensively,
- 19:43Speaker 7: the US is going to really have to look out.
- 19:45Speaker 7: Are they going to sit with four in the back
- 19:46Speaker 7: or are they going to try and go in at
- 19:48Speaker 7: three in attack and then drop in with four. That's
- 19:51Speaker 7: most likely what will happen. I'm excited for a more
- 19:54Speaker 7: open game on the wings and on both sides of
- 19:56Speaker 7: the ball. I think it allows Christian Polistic a chance
- 19:58Speaker 7: to open his legs up. He is so good taking
- 20:01Speaker 7: guys one on one. And yes he's a little bit
- 20:04Speaker 7: more inverted. He plays on the left hand side, but
- 20:06Speaker 7: he's right footed, so that ability to cut inside and
- 20:09Speaker 7: create space, combining with if Bulligan starts tonight, and then
- 20:13Speaker 7: of course Ergino Desk on the other side and arguably
- 20:16Speaker 7: in my opinion, one of the most technical players on
- 20:18Speaker 7: the ball in this in this tournament, Dutch heritage er
- 20:22Speaker 7: de Visier, top top player. If he's allowed open space,
- 20:27Speaker 7: the combinations with Weston McKinney.
- 20:28Speaker 6: We've seen it.
- 20:30Speaker 7: The US has a great chance, but let's not forget
- 20:33Speaker 7: this is a Belgium team that destroyed the US just
- 20:36Speaker 7: a month ago, less than a month ago, pretty much,
- 20:38Speaker 7: so they're going to have their work cut out for him.
- 20:41Speaker 7: USA only beat Bosnia. That was their first win in
- 20:44Speaker 7: eleven games against a European side.
- 20:47Speaker 6: So history is not stacked up well.
- 20:50Speaker 7: Against this US men's national team side, especially against a
- 20:53Speaker 7: Belgium team that's, you know, a top ten team in
- 20:56Speaker 7: the world according to FIFA rankings. But like you said,
- 20:59Speaker 7: they haven't played get this entire tournament. I don't know
- 21:01Speaker 7: if it's heat, aging legs, tactics.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Whatever it is.
- 21:04Speaker 7: The USA has an opportunity, like Senegal to get on
- 21:07Speaker 7: top of them early, but they've had the ability to
- 21:10Speaker 7: score late in games. Belgium has and they've showed their
- 21:13Speaker 7: class later on in matches, and the US is going
- 21:16Speaker 7: to have their work cutout for him tonight.
- 21:18Speaker 2: The US has not beaten Belgium since nineteen thirty in
- 21:22Speaker 2: the international soccer.
- 21:24Speaker 7: Play, almost one hundred years.
- 21:27Speaker 2: That's also the last time the United States finished highest
- 21:31Speaker 2: third in the World Cup. The very first one when
- 21:33Speaker 2: they went the third and yeah, it's the modern history
- 21:36Speaker 2: again if you missed it earlier, the modern history. This
- 21:38Speaker 2: will be a chance to reach the quarterfinals for only
- 21:40Speaker 2: the second time ever, the other time in two thousand
- 21:43Speaker 2: and two. Brad Evans joining US on ninety three point
- 21:46Speaker 2: three KJRFM, the Sounder former sounder now sounders analysts and
- 21:49Speaker 2: World Cup analysts for US, Brad, when you look at
- 21:53Speaker 2: what coach Mauricio Postatino has done beside the Argentinian the
- 21:58Speaker 2: grid and the added dude and we're not backing down
- 22:01Speaker 2: from anyone and the comments he makes supporting his guys.
- 22:05Speaker 2: What has he done tactically to change the US national
- 22:08Speaker 2: team and how has that shown up in the World Cup.
- 22:11Speaker 7: Well, tactically, I think he's got the formation correct. I
- 22:15Speaker 7: think when you really look at it, it's a four
- 22:17Speaker 7: to three three. You've got Tyler Adams with EPL experience.
- 22:21Speaker 7: He's allowed to just sit in front of the back four,
- 22:23Speaker 7: sometimes a back three, and he's allowed McKinney. What I
- 22:27Speaker 7: love is just freedom to go anywhere on the pitch.
- 22:30Speaker 7: He is so athletic. His ability to get in the
- 22:35Speaker 7: box late to combine with Sirgenial desk wherever he is
- 22:38Speaker 7: on the pitch. I think he's given freedom to guys
- 22:40Speaker 7: that in historically have kind of been handcuffed in certain
- 22:44Speaker 7: roles and told to play a certain way, especially under
- 22:46Speaker 7: Greg Berhalter, was very strict in his tactical prowess.
- 22:51Speaker 6: Now, Greg was a good coach.
- 22:52Speaker 7: He did well in the last World Cup, and he
- 22:53Speaker 7: continues to do well coaching the Chicago Fire, turning that
- 22:56Speaker 7: team around. But there is a little bit of freedom
- 22:58Speaker 7: that's lost with him. It has to be very A
- 23:01Speaker 7: to B B to C. Pochettino. You can see they
- 23:03Speaker 7: have freedom to mix up their play and where they
- 23:06Speaker 7: are on the pitch. Sometimes polistic will pop up on
- 23:09Speaker 7: the right, so genial desk will come inside. I like
- 23:12Speaker 7: that he's given them the freedom to kind of play
- 23:14Speaker 7: to their strengths most importantly, and all of these guys
- 23:18Speaker 7: have really taken hold of that, and I think they're
- 23:20Speaker 7: really enjoying their time. Look, I had three coaches with
- 23:23Speaker 7: the national team, Bob Bradley, Jurgen and Bruce Arena for
- 23:27Speaker 7: a short stint at the end, and I had never
- 23:30Speaker 7: seen a head coach bring a group in after a game, win, loser,
- 23:34Speaker 7: draw and bring.
- 23:36Speaker 6: The group together and make it feel like it's their team.
- 23:39Speaker 7: Yes, Pochettino's making the decisions on who starts and who
- 23:42Speaker 7: comes off the bench, but it really seems like these
- 23:44Speaker 7: guys have the keys to the car and they're gonna
- 23:47Speaker 7: go as far as they want to in terms of
- 23:51Speaker 7: do they have it within this group to take the
- 23:53Speaker 7: next step forward to be that group that makes a
- 23:56Speaker 7: quarterfinal match and really make a statement because this group
- 24:01Speaker 7: at their age, they're pretty much all in their prime
- 24:04Speaker 7: and it's time for them to go. The coach is
- 24:06Speaker 7: hugging every player after the game, and I've never experienced that.
- 24:10Speaker 6: From a coach.
- 24:11Speaker 7: I think the guys are really responding to his coaching
- 24:15Speaker 7: tactics and everything that he's said in the press is
- 24:17Speaker 7: spot on. He's behind his players. I love what he's done.
- 24:21Speaker 7: I'd love to have him on a sit down conversation
- 24:24Speaker 7: for an hour just to talk about his coaching philosophy.
- 24:27Speaker 2: One of the only older players on the US team
- 24:30Speaker 2: tim Ree mccaptain, and he's thirty eight years old. Multiple
- 24:34Speaker 2: World Cups with Ben's proger. He told me in the
- 24:36Speaker 2: mix oone, this is the closest team they've had, and
- 24:38Speaker 2: he said that before they started winning. Was the US
- 24:40Speaker 2: Australia match and he said it's the closest they've been
- 24:43Speaker 2: and he credited Pochattino in his environment, in this culture
- 24:48Speaker 2: he's created. This is Brad Evans with It's on ninety
- 24:50Speaker 2: three point three KJRFM. The winner of this match today
- 24:53Speaker 2: Brett As you know, we'll take on the winner of
- 24:55Speaker 2: the Portugal Spain match. It begins at noon our time.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Is Spain one of the tournament favorite Portugal would still
- 25:01Speaker 2: with Ronaldo but at times zero neil nol dras haven't
- 25:05Speaker 2: looked themselves either, much like Belgium. What are you expecting
- 25:07Speaker 2: in Portugal Spain today?
- 25:10Speaker 6: Yeah, look, it's a toss up for me.
- 25:12Speaker 7: I think both midfields are arguably the best midfields in
- 25:17Speaker 7: the tournament, but Portugal hadn't really shown up. Yes, they
- 25:21Speaker 7: have one of the arguably the best player to ever play,
- 25:23Speaker 7: Christiano Ronaldo, but his role has changed for the team
- 25:26Speaker 7: and I just saw it in the last game finally
- 25:29Speaker 7: him really celebrating with his teammates when they score. That
- 25:34Speaker 7: didn't happen in the group stage games. It was kind
- 25:36Speaker 7: of all about Ronaldo. Still, something may have switched in
- 25:40Speaker 7: his head and that's gonna take that team pretty far.
- 25:42Speaker 6: If he can just be.
- 25:43Speaker 7: The focal point, much like Holland was yesterday fifteen touches
- 25:47Speaker 7: on the ball against Brazil but scores two goals.
- 25:49Speaker 6: He can be that guy for Portugal. He just has
- 25:52Speaker 6: to be.
- 25:52Speaker 7: Okay with that role and if he doesn't score, then
- 25:55Speaker 7: just occupying both center backs so that everyone else can
- 25:58Speaker 7: get involved in the game. And on Spain side, you've
- 26:01Speaker 7: got le Mignamal at eighteen years old, already sixty plus
- 26:05Speaker 7: goal contributions for Barcelona. On the flip side, Messi at
- 26:08Speaker 7: eighteen years old had one goal at this point at
- 26:11Speaker 7: the same age as Lamal. He could be the next
- 26:16Speaker 7: best player in the world ever in twenty years when
- 26:19Speaker 7: we're talking about him, if he stays healthy and continues
- 26:21Speaker 7: on the path that he's on.
- 26:22Speaker 6: So that's the most exciting player for Spain.
- 26:25Speaker 7: And it doesn't matter if he's one v two, one
- 26:27Speaker 7: v three, he's going to find and create space. So
- 26:30Speaker 7: for Spain it's going to be about playing through the
- 26:32Speaker 7: lines quickly. And it's not the Spain of their World
- 26:36Speaker 7: Clup glory years, you know, a decade ago ish. They
- 26:40Speaker 7: play a little bit more direct and They're a little
- 26:42Speaker 7: bit underside, but still their ability to play in tight spaces.
- 26:46Speaker 7: Most of those guys play together on a weekly basis
- 26:49Speaker 7: with their club teams Barcelona, so they definitely had the
- 26:53Speaker 7: upper hand in this game. But again, tomorrow we could
- 26:56Speaker 7: be talking about this and Ronaldo has a hat trick
- 26:58Speaker 7: and bang, bang bang, they move on in this tournament.
- 27:02Speaker 6: It's a toss up for me.
- 27:03Speaker 7: I really don't know who I am. If I had
- 27:05Speaker 7: to pick one, I'd probably pick Spain, just top to bottom,
- 27:09Speaker 7: more of a team than Portugal, a little bit of
- 27:13Speaker 7: an aging side in Portugal and Spain on the up
- 27:15Speaker 7: and up again.
- 27:16Speaker 6: So it's going to be an exciting one.
- 27:18Speaker 7: But like you said, the US will have to get
- 27:19Speaker 7: the job done tonight and then I think go back
- 27:22Speaker 7: down to Los Angeles to play either Spain or Portugal.
- 27:25Speaker 2: That'll be on Friday noon Pacific time, the winner of
- 27:28Speaker 2: this US Belgium match against the winner of Portugal in Spain. Brad,
- 27:32Speaker 2: you've been around soccer all your life. Where did last
- 27:35Speaker 2: night Mexico and England in a STECA rank in terms
- 27:39Speaker 2: of intensity and spectacle and just soccer skill?
- 27:43Speaker 7: I mean, we called the game in the studios at
- 27:47Speaker 7: iHeart there and at halftime I said, this is the
- 27:50Speaker 7: best game of the tournament already. It had everything, It
- 27:53Speaker 7: had the drama of being in Azteca. I've played in
- 27:55Speaker 7: that stadium with the Sounders against Club America, and when
- 27:58Speaker 7: you walk in there, you know the greats that have
- 28:01Speaker 7: played in there. There's not there's a handful of stadiums
- 28:04Speaker 7: in the world where players of yesteryear that lifted a
- 28:09Speaker 7: World Cup trophy have played in that stadium and you
- 28:13Speaker 7: really feel it. And that's a huge advantage for the
- 28:15Speaker 7: home team there, whether it's Club America, whether that plays
- 28:18Speaker 7: their club teams there or Mexico obviously, and their record
- 28:21Speaker 7: is unbelievable in Azteca. I think only two or three
- 28:25Speaker 7: losses in the last I don't know, fifty sixty years
- 28:29Speaker 7: or something like that.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Ninety matches three losses.
- 28:31Speaker 7: Now, which is incredible.
- 28:34Speaker 6: So that is a fortress.
- 28:36Speaker 7: Eighty thousand Mexican fans and a few thousand English fans
- 28:40Speaker 7: that made the trip down there. But Jude Bellingham was
- 28:43Speaker 7: world class last night. He put on a masterclass of
- 28:46Speaker 7: how a physical number ten, oversized number ten should play
- 28:50Speaker 7: the game. He looks like Zaddan when he plays and
- 28:54Speaker 7: I hadn't seen it before from him, but last night
- 28:56Speaker 7: that was my comment. He's the only player that I've
- 28:59Speaker 7: seen since Zidan to look and play like Zidan does,
- 29:02Speaker 7: and he showed it last night header and then getting
- 29:04Speaker 7: into the box late to finish a Harry Kane cross
- 29:07Speaker 7: and then to bust it for forty minutes. It felt
- 29:10Speaker 7: like with the eleven minutes of stoppage time to play
- 29:12Speaker 7: a man down. The only thing that was their saving
- 29:15Speaker 7: grace was it was sixty six degrees and raining, so
- 29:18Speaker 7: it was a little bit like home back in England,
- 29:21Speaker 7: albeit at you know, seventy three hundred feet elevation.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Brad Evans joining us on ninety three point three KJRFM
- 29:29Speaker 2: England and Norway in the round of eight. England wins
- 29:32Speaker 2: and asks technical way they did him to defend with
- 29:34Speaker 2: ten men for the last fifty minutes, how empowered are
- 29:37Speaker 2: they and how much can they feel like they win
- 29:40Speaker 2: the tournament and how much of a favorite are they
- 29:42Speaker 2: now to win the whole thing.
- 29:44Speaker 7: I think both teams played pretty similarly in Norway and England.
- 29:49Speaker 7: They both took the game to the opposing potential probably favorite.
- 29:53Speaker 7: I think England technically was favored, but I throw that
- 29:56Speaker 7: all out the window. When you're playing that asteca against Mexico.
- 30:00Speaker 7: Norway was happy to absorb the attack from Brazil and
- 30:04Speaker 7: catch them on a counter attack. And if you don't
- 30:06Speaker 7: finish your chances in these games like Brazil did, they
- 30:09Speaker 7: could have gone up to nothing. Obviously one nothing early
- 30:11Speaker 7: on in that one. With a PK, you're going to
- 30:13Speaker 7: be under trouble. And when you're playing against Holland, if
- 30:16Speaker 7: he gets one chance the balls in the back of
- 30:18Speaker 7: the net, it doesn't matter if he's in the box,
- 30:20Speaker 7: outside of the box, he will find the back.
- 30:22Speaker 6: Of the net. He's probably the best pure striker in
- 30:24Speaker 6: the world right now.
- 30:26Speaker 7: And then of course on the flip side, you've got
- 30:29Speaker 7: England with that result of the Hoopla right Mexican fans
- 30:33Speaker 7: are shooting off fireworks music all night outside of their hotel.
- 30:36Speaker 7: Any competitive advantage and then they come out, play a
- 30:39Speaker 7: man down and get the job done three to two.
- 30:43Speaker 7: So both teams are riding on a high right now.
- 30:45Speaker 7: The Norwegian fans have showed up in this tournament, far
- 30:49Speaker 7: out numbering the English fans. Is what it looks like.
- 30:51Speaker 7: It's going to be a battle. But the one saving
- 30:54Speaker 7: grace for Norway is that most of those guys play
- 30:59Speaker 7: against the English players in the Premier League. Right there's
- 31:02Speaker 7: a lot of players on Norway that don't play in
- 31:04Speaker 7: the Premier League and it's a little bit of an
- 31:06Speaker 7: unknown when you step on the pitch for those England players,
- 31:11Speaker 7: which can give Norway maybe a bit of a mental
- 31:14Speaker 7: advantage in this one. That's gonna be That's gonna be
- 31:16Speaker 7: an exciting game. Harry Kane's proven again and again his quality,
- 31:21Speaker 7: even as he ages, just getting better and better, is
- 31:24Speaker 7: just like a fine wine. And with Bellingham and sock
- 31:27Speaker 7: up their bench is better than Norway's. That could be
- 31:30Speaker 7: the big deciding factor in this match.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Okay, Brad, I'm pinning down on a prediction or how
- 31:36Speaker 2: do you think today is gonna go US Belgium? Five
- 31:38Speaker 2: o'clock right across the street from me.
- 31:40Speaker 7: Yeah, I predicted two to one. I think the US
- 31:43Speaker 7: will will pull it out. I mean, the crowd here
- 31:45Speaker 7: Seattle and the buzzer around the city is going to
- 31:47Speaker 7: be top quality. And I just hope that this victory
- 31:53Speaker 7: propels US Soccer and really ignites the next generation of
- 31:57Speaker 7: of of players on the men's and women's just seeing
- 32:01Speaker 7: it in your hometown, in your home country, the ability
- 32:04Speaker 7: to get wins. There's been a lot of pressure. I
- 32:07Speaker 7: mean every commercial I see, no matter what channel it
- 32:09Speaker 7: is on TV, is about this US team. So there's
- 32:12Speaker 7: a lot of expectations there, but that should be the
- 32:16Speaker 7: correct course right now. With the Sounders, it's always been
- 32:19Speaker 7: the expectation to win, and they've proven that they could
- 32:22Speaker 7: do that. With the US team, the expectation hasn't always
- 32:27Speaker 7: necessarily been to win, but for some reason something has
- 32:30Speaker 7: changed in this tournament with this group, based on their
- 32:32Speaker 7: first four games that the expectation is that this team
- 32:35Speaker 7: makes a deep run in this tournament. A lot of
- 32:38Speaker 7: resources have been put behind this team. I mean I
- 32:41Speaker 7: hosted a US Soccer kind of get together last night
- 32:44Speaker 7: at Victory Hall, and I was like, who's not from Seattle?
- 32:46Speaker 7: And more than half the crowd there was not from Seattle.
- 32:49Speaker 7: A lot of people spending their hard earned money to
- 32:52Speaker 7: come to this tournament to root these guys on, expecting
- 32:55Speaker 7: to see a victory.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Brad, I appreciate you, man. I know you've been busy
- 32:59Speaker 2: on the air on our shows and then on our
- 33:02Speaker 2: shows again this morning, and on our game covers, match covers.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Thank you, sir, Brad Evans, enjoyed the day and with
- 33:07Speaker 2: the finest, biggest sports day in Seattle history. Appreciate it
- 33:11Speaker 2: all right, Thank you Brad Evans, former sounder, sounder analyst,
- 33:15Speaker 2: former US national team member, Phoenix native. Big day for
- 33:19Speaker 2: him and anyone who's been associated with US men's soccer.
- 33:22Speaker 2: He mentioned Victory Hall right across the street for me
- 33:24Speaker 2: over my left shoulder here.
- 33:25Speaker 3: It sounds like a lot of fun.
- 33:27Speaker 2: It is. There's a lineup Jessman already along First Avenue
- 33:30Speaker 2: South to get into.
- 33:31Speaker 8: Victory all right, seattle' get it so if you planning
- 33:35Speaker 8: on going to that, it's the Belgium watch party or
- 33:38Speaker 8: pre match party too, but it looks like people are
- 33:41Speaker 8: lining up to watch Portugal and Spain.
- 33:42Speaker 2: It starts at noon, about an hour and twenty minutes
- 33:45Speaker 2: from now. If you messed, I could talk with Brad Evans.
- 33:47Speaker 2: You can get it on the iHeartRadio app downloaded for
- 33:50Speaker 2: free go to nineteen three KJR or Jessment will have
- 33:52Speaker 2: it up on the show on the podcast.
- 33:54Speaker 3: We will and don't forget to send in your talkbacks.
- 33:57Speaker 3: We always know that I love those.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Esmond appreciates the talkbacks on the iHeartRadio app. It's a
- 34:02Speaker 2: little red microphone at the bottom of the nine three
- 34:05Speaker 2: three KJR page. We'll play those back along with your
- 34:07Speaker 2: text at eleven thirty up next, the Mariners made two
- 34:11Speaker 2: promotions inside their system that got a lot of attention.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Why a major league pitcher who got pulled while he
- 34:17Speaker 2: had a perfect game through seven innings yesterday. I'll tell
- 34:19Speaker 2: you a little bit about what I saw in Vancouver
- 34:21Speaker 2: when I was up there Thursday night. See what how
- 34:24Speaker 2: they do the World Cup compared to Seattle. And eleven
- 34:26Speaker 2: o'clock Nico Moreno join us to talk more about the
- 34:29Speaker 2: World Cup, including England Mexican at Mexico last night, and
- 34:32Speaker 2: he'll be with me at US Belgium today. All that's
- 34:34Speaker 2: coming up from Jimmy's on First across the street from
- 34:37Speaker 2: Luomenfield on ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back, Craig
- 35:10Speaker 2: Bell from Jimmy's on First across the street from wil
- 35:12Speaker 2: Jess I knocking tire back in the Elliott Bay Studios
- 35:15Speaker 2: on ninety three point three kJ R FM. That weather guy,
- 35:18Speaker 2: Where's he from?
- 35:20Speaker 8: Brian McMillan's sweltering eighty one.
- 35:24Speaker 2: It's like two hundred degrees on the East coast of
- 35:26Speaker 2: ninety percent ubdity right now.
- 35:28Speaker 3: I will say talking to my family was quite interesting.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Because man, buy our our families in Ohio and Michigan
- 35:35Speaker 2: are just under it right now.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Oh they're just bacon.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Oh it's and it's so damn human. The rest of
- 35:41Speaker 2: the place. We don't have humidity here.
- 35:43Speaker 3: No, I got bid on the face by a mosquito
- 35:45Speaker 3: this weekend and it felt magical.
- 35:51Speaker 2: So yeah, eighty one and sweltering makes me laugh. But
- 35:53Speaker 2: it's gonna be perfect today. No clouds in the sky
- 35:56Speaker 2: across the Pacific northwest for this US and Belgium at
- 35:59Speaker 2: five o'clock Atloomenfield right across the street from where I'm
- 36:01Speaker 2: sitting right now. You heard Brad Evans in the last segment.
- 36:04Speaker 2: We talked to a link with him and he mentioned
- 36:06Speaker 2: how history is not on the US's side today. Boise
- 36:11Speaker 2: right about that the US hasn't beaten Belgium since nineteen thirty.
- 36:15Speaker 2: That's that ninety six years ago. We already talked about
- 36:18Speaker 2: how they're trying to reach the quarterfinals for just a
- 36:20Speaker 2: second time in modern history. Two thousand and two, being
- 36:23Speaker 2: the other time. The United States has won just one time,
- 36:27Speaker 2: and it's last fourteen matches against an European opponent, and
- 36:32Speaker 2: that was last week when they beat Bosnia and Herszey
- 36:34Speaker 2: Golovina to get to this point today. So not only
- 36:38Speaker 2: is it for a chance in the round to eight,
- 36:40Speaker 2: but there's all this history this against the United States
- 36:43Speaker 2: doing this because we just don't get this. Yeah, we
- 36:46Speaker 2: get to the World Cup j justment and then one
- 36:47Speaker 2: or two weeks in oka group stage is over and
- 36:50Speaker 2: everyone else gets to play, and then we just watch
- 36:52Speaker 2: everybody else from Europe South America get to play and
- 36:55Speaker 2: the US is out of it. That's what makes us
- 36:58Speaker 2: such a big deal. Today. They might be one hundred
- 37:01Speaker 2: and fifty two hundred million people worldwide watching this. And
- 37:06Speaker 2: I think it's not even hyperperlely at all to say
- 37:08Speaker 2: this is the biggest sports day in Seattle history. You
- 37:11Speaker 2: can only probably compare it to the NBA Finals being
- 37:14Speaker 2: here with Michael Jordan's Bulls coming in in the mid nineties,
- 37:18Speaker 2: or some NFC title games. I've attended all for the
- 37:21Speaker 2: NFC title games here in Seattle, and at a global scale,
- 37:25Speaker 2: it's not as big as this.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I mean, it's huge.
- 37:28Speaker 5: And what I have loved every second of it is
- 37:32Speaker 5: just the way that people have turned out and actually
- 37:37Speaker 5: like loved it and embraced the game and embrace each other.
- 37:41Speaker 5: It's just been really, really lovely here in Seattle.
- 37:45Speaker 2: It has everyone just being everybody. I'm okay, you're okay.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Jerseys from all over the world. Yes, Katari's in there,
- 37:54Speaker 2: wearing their native clothing and running Americans here. It's been
- 38:00Speaker 2: a celebration of sport and cultures and nationalities and all
- 38:04Speaker 2: of that that make the World Cup so unique.
- 38:06Speaker 5: And you know, I was at the Mariners this weekend too.
- 38:10Speaker 5: I was at a couple of those games. And everyone
- 38:12Speaker 5: who's visiting to witness the World Cup games is also
- 38:16Speaker 5: double dipping, which you should highly recommend.
- 38:20Speaker 3: It's a really good thing.
- 38:21Speaker 5: And yeah, just enjoying the city and embracing everything about
- 38:28Speaker 5: the cultures of each other.
- 38:30Speaker 3: I love it. I think it's been really cool.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Five o'clock today, the United States and Belgium live here
- 38:36Speaker 2: on ninety three point three KJR from the pregame show
- 38:38Speaker 2: will be here from Jimmy's on first and National iHeart
- 38:41Speaker 2: Radio pregame show right here from Jimmy's at first, starting
- 38:44Speaker 2: at four thirty. Infinnessa's right next to me. He's made
- 38:46Speaker 2: his way in from outskirts of Seattle to get here
- 38:49Speaker 2: in time.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Get that man of Bloody Mary.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Yeah exactly. He'll be hosting the show from twelve until
- 38:54Speaker 2: three here Portugal and Spain at twelve. That winner that
- 38:58Speaker 2: will play the US. Belgium win on Friday in the
- 39:01Speaker 2: round of eight in Los Angeles. Jess when mentioned the Mariners,
- 39:06Speaker 2: they just finished a five to one home stand and
- 39:08Speaker 2: put him in a game and a half up in
- 39:09Speaker 2: the American League West. And they made two moves in
- 39:13Speaker 2: their minor leagues yesterday that got some notice. Cazara Montes,
- 39:16Speaker 2: the right field of the big hulking right fielder and
- 39:18Speaker 2: short stop Michael o'royo promoted the Triple A to Coma.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Montes is the number three overall prospect in Arroyos the fourth.
- 39:26Speaker 2: And now they're going to be playing at Cheney Stadium
- 39:28Speaker 2: for the Rainiers, and we'll see people are asking when
- 39:33Speaker 2: Montes is coming up, in particular for power hitting and
- 39:35Speaker 2: aid in the offense. But now he's one step away
- 39:39Speaker 2: at Triple A to Coma along with Michael Arroyo. Also
- 39:42Speaker 2: in baseball. Yesterday, the Marlins had started Uri Perez had
- 39:46Speaker 2: a perfect game on the A's in Sacramento. Through seven innings,
- 39:50Speaker 2: he had ninety two pitches, and they took him out.
- 39:54Speaker 2: He sat in the dugout and watched the reliever. The
- 39:56Speaker 2: first dude that came in for him came in and
- 39:59Speaker 2: walked the guy perfect game over one batter after Perez left.
- 40:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it could have been a compilation of perfect.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Well, yes, but what it was and you said, now
- 40:11Speaker 2: you think, oh, here we go ninety two pitches. The
- 40:14Speaker 2: arm was gonna fall off after ninety three. They had
- 40:16Speaker 2: to take them out and ruining baseball.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Does that sound familiar?
- 40:19Speaker 2: Yeah, well, there was some extenuating circumstances. Yesterday. This was
- 40:23Speaker 2: the third start for Perez since he returned from the
- 40:25Speaker 2: injured list, so that Marlins had made up their mind
- 40:28Speaker 2: long before that that he wasn't gonna pitch deep, deep
- 40:31Speaker 2: into the game beyond well obviously ninety some pitches. So
- 40:35Speaker 2: there is some mitigating factor there that explains that. Although
- 40:39Speaker 2: we've talked about on the show, the trend, of course
- 40:41Speaker 2: is you're not pitching one hundred pitches of your arm's
- 40:43Speaker 2: gonna fall off. That's how baseball people think. Now, the
- 40:46Speaker 2: Mariners are heading to Miami to play the Marlins, but
- 40:49Speaker 2: they won't be playing you're a Perez. Of course, he
- 40:51Speaker 2: just pitched yesterday, so they'll miss him in the three
- 40:53Speaker 2: game series that begins tomorrow night, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, the
- 40:56Speaker 2: Mariners are in Miami. That's the longest flight you can make,
- 40:59Speaker 2: I think, in the Cutdom the United States.
- 41:01Speaker 3: I have done such flights, and I've.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Done it many times since. It's not fun, especially coming
- 41:07Speaker 2: back the other way into the headwinds. It takes like
- 41:09Speaker 2: seven hours.
- 41:10Speaker 5: It's yeah, that's when you do a red eye and
- 41:13Speaker 5: you just hope to sleep exactly.
- 41:17Speaker 2: They are lining up along First Avenue South, across the
- 41:20Speaker 2: street from me. I'm a Jimmy's on First and across
- 41:22Speaker 2: the street at Victory Hall to watch parties for Spain
- 41:25Speaker 2: Portugal in US Belgium. There's already a line all the
- 41:28Speaker 2: way down the street and we are still it's amazing
- 41:31Speaker 2: hours until the match begins.
- 41:32Speaker 3: I love it. I love it. It's just so great.
- 41:35Speaker 2: So witness some stars and stripes walking all up and
- 41:39Speaker 2: down Occidental Avenue and yeah, it's already there are already
- 41:42Speaker 2: people here at ten to fifty five am a lot
- 41:44Speaker 2: of them for a five o'clock match to US and Belgium.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Up next, someone else to talk about it is gonna
- 41:49Speaker 2: be sitting next to me in the press box day
- 41:50Speaker 2: Nico Moreno. He's a MLS spianol Fox thirteen Sports Seattle
- 41:55Speaker 2: sounder at heart. He joins us next to talk about
- 41:58Speaker 2: the World Cup and and for so join me at
- 42:00Speaker 2: eleven forty five after we do your text and talked
- 42:03Speaker 2: about because at eleven thirty all that's coming up on
- 42:05Speaker 2: ninety three point three kJ RFM.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Now from the Star Rents Sports Test your ninety three
- 42:14Speaker 1: point three kJ RFM sports headlines.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Good morning, Happy Monday. I'm right across the street from
- 42:20Speaker 2: Lumen Fair where the United States and Belgium will play
- 42:23Speaker 2: at five o'clock. Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrewed
- 42:25Speaker 2: Corslight Choose Chill. FIFA has apparently heard the appeals of
- 42:32Speaker 2: Belgium about the United States. Is star player Falgun flow
- 42:37Speaker 2: Balligan being able to play It's played a red card.
- 42:40Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you mean the guy that should be playing anyway,
- 42:44Speaker 5: the guy.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Probably shouldn't have a red card. And now they've flubbed up.
- 42:46Speaker 2: The process to get rid of the red card exactly.
- 42:49Speaker 2: So Belgium says they're going to leave all options open
- 42:52Speaker 2: for after the match. Apparently, so Baligan's gonna play, and
- 42:57Speaker 2: Princidon Trump's talking about it and he's involved with the
- 43:00Speaker 2: president of FIFA and another ed states. Yeah, another reason
- 43:06Speaker 2: for the world to hate the US. Perhaps there's a
- 43:08Speaker 2: little more of an edge to this match on at
- 43:11Speaker 2: five o'clock today here in Seattle than there has been
- 43:13Speaker 2: in most World Cup matches. Spain and Portugal are playing
- 43:16Speaker 2: the other World Cup match today. It begins at noon,
- 43:19Speaker 2: I believe that's in Dallas. The winner of that match
- 43:21Speaker 2: will played the winner of the US Belgium match. It'll
- 43:23Speaker 2: be Friday in the round of eight in Los Angeles.
- 43:26Speaker 2: The United States has only advanced to the Round of
- 43:28Speaker 2: a one time in its modern history. That was twenty
- 43:31Speaker 2: four years ago. The Mariners finished a five and one
- 43:35Speaker 2: home stand yesterday by beating Toronto four nothing thanks to
- 43:38Speaker 2: Emerson Hancock's seven scoreless innings, tied for his longest outing
- 43:42Speaker 2: of his career. He had only allowed two hits over
- 43:46Speaker 2: those seven ings. All you needed was a Mitch Garber
- 43:48Speaker 2: home run to run. Homer made it three to nothing.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Midway through the game, GameSpy Andresmunio was finished it up.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Mariners are not playing to Florida Trekking to Miami begin
- 43:56Speaker 2: a three game series of margainst the Marlins. Mariners are
- 43:59Speaker 2: three games over five hundred game and a half up
- 44:01Speaker 2: in the American League West. Yesterday, at the World Cup
- 44:04Speaker 2: England and Mexico Absolute Banger in Azteca in England wins
- 44:08Speaker 2: three to two, defending the last fifteen minutes with only
- 44:11Speaker 2: ten men, and also Norway eliminated Brazil. Two more goals
- 44:16Speaker 2: for Earling, Holland, Helonel Messi, Killian and Bape all have
- 44:21Speaker 2: seven goals to lead the race for the World Cup
- 44:22Speaker 2: Golden Boot as its top scorer in Brazil. Star neymar
- 44:26Speaker 2: announced after yesterday's match that he's retiring. The Seahawks rookies
- 44:30Speaker 2: are due to report in training camp in eleven days
- 44:32Speaker 2: July seventeen. Veterans report July twenty four, first practice of
- 44:36Speaker 2: the Virginia Mason Athletics Center in July twenty fifth. Ninety
- 44:39Speaker 2: three point three KJRFM will be there live all shows
- 44:42Speaker 2: all days of Seahawks training camp beginning July twenty fifth.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Someone who sometimes makes it out to Seahawks, but primarily
- 44:51Speaker 2: is focused on soccer, which means he is absolutely focused
- 44:54Speaker 2: on this World Cup. Is Nico Moreno Sounderheart MLS Espanol,
- 44:59Speaker 2: Fox thirteen Seattle Television World Cup Analyst. He joins us
- 45:02Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing hotline because he couldn't make it
- 45:05Speaker 2: downtown to Seattle yet because it's filling up fast. Nico
- 45:10Speaker 2: joined us in the Beacon Plumbing hotline. Hello, sur good morning.
- 45:15Speaker 9: We're having me on And yes, I am just finalizing
- 45:19Speaker 9: a couple of things because I don't want to have
- 45:20Speaker 9: to go and come back. Otherwise I would have been
- 45:23Speaker 9: there without a doubt. But once I'm ready to go,
- 45:26Speaker 9: I'm excited to see what the city's looking like and
- 45:30Speaker 9: hopefully I don't hit too much traffic.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Already a lineup outside Victory Hall of US and Belgian fans,
- 45:35Speaker 2: but waiting to get into that place. There's already people
- 45:38Speaker 2: walking up and down Occidental Avenue outside Occidental Beer Hall
- 45:42Speaker 2: for that place. I'm surprised, frankly how many people are already
- 45:46Speaker 2: here six hours before the match. And okay, Nico, were
- 45:48Speaker 2: you on the couch last night? Your wife's Mexican side
- 45:52Speaker 2: losing in Asteca for only the third time and ninety
- 45:54Speaker 2: matches as a national team. That was just a banger
- 45:58Speaker 2: of a game. Is how'd you feel? What were your
- 46:01Speaker 2: impressions of Mexico in England last night day? I was
- 46:05Speaker 2: a phenomenal game.
- 46:06Speaker 9: I was impressed by how Mexico dominated the tempo of
- 46:13Speaker 9: that game, the way that they were able to pin
- 46:16Speaker 9: back England for as long as they did. And I
- 46:19Speaker 9: was just as surprised or amazed at how two or
- 46:24Speaker 9: three minutes of that game and just kind of on
- 46:28Speaker 9: the defensive end for Mexico just kind of shutting off
- 46:31Speaker 9: cost them the game. I mean, it was just two
- 46:34Speaker 9: quick goals that really play Mexico in a bad position
- 46:40Speaker 9: where you cannot allow Jade Bellingham, the best player on
- 46:44Speaker 9: that team, to just walk into the eighteen and have
- 46:48Speaker 9: a couple of tappens, right. I mean, it's literally in
- 46:50Speaker 9: two minutes that this game gets decided. Mexico has to
- 46:56Speaker 9: swim against the current and try to get back into
- 46:59Speaker 9: this game, and to their credit, they did. They had
- 47:01Speaker 9: an excellent timely goal right before the half that, if
- 47:05Speaker 9: you know soccer, a goal right before they have is
- 47:07Speaker 9: always a gut. Prince to the opposition Juliankiez, who is
- 47:11Speaker 9: without a doubt the most dangerous player for Mexico. He is,
- 47:16Speaker 9: without a doubt their breakout player of this World Cup.
- 47:19Speaker 9: He gets the goal that gave the team chance as
- 47:24Speaker 9: an opportunity. But England, you got to give them credit.
- 47:28Speaker 9: Even with ten men after Kwansa was sent off in
- 47:31Speaker 9: the fifty fourth minute, they're able to pack it in park,
- 47:34Speaker 9: the bus absorb pressure and they're able to hold on
- 47:38Speaker 9: to a three to two win at the end. So
- 47:41Speaker 9: difficult to see Mexico go out because as a fan base,
- 47:45Speaker 9: they've been electric. I mean, the atmosphere was phenomenal. As Tristeca,
- 47:50Speaker 9: I thought that they played very good soccer, but unfortunately
- 47:54Speaker 9: they just didn't have enough. And I hate to put
- 47:56Speaker 9: it on the coach and I won't take too long
- 47:58Speaker 9: on this regard, but after Javier Aguire did not put
- 48:03Speaker 9: his best players to try to tie that game at
- 48:07Speaker 9: the end of the game, he ends up taking hold off.
- 48:12Speaker 9: It starts to just kind of add more attackers without
- 48:15Speaker 9: any players that can provide effective services in or create chances,
- 48:21Speaker 9: and really just balances the team and really did a
- 48:24Speaker 9: disservice to all the effort they put in throughout the
- 48:26Speaker 9: ninety minutes.
- 48:28Speaker 2: He stepped down abvier Gar did after the match has
- 48:31Speaker 2: already been playing and Ralpha Marquez, the former Mexican national player,
- 48:35Speaker 2: is now the coach of the Mexican national team effective
- 48:38Speaker 2: last night. After that match, Where does England Nico? Where
- 48:41Speaker 2: does England fit in now? Because they have to be
- 48:43Speaker 2: empowered thinking they can win the whole damn thing after
- 48:45Speaker 2: winning as Teca with only three times as ever happened
- 48:49Speaker 2: in ninety matches against the Mexican national team. They got
- 48:51Speaker 2: still France, of course over that side of the bragget
- 48:54Speaker 2: Argentina at all, Spain Portugal winner. But England with Kine
- 48:59Speaker 2: and m and I mean they're legit favored to win
- 49:04Speaker 2: the tournament now, No.
- 49:06Speaker 9: Yeah, I think so.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Look I like Norway.
- 49:10Speaker 9: I think that they have a game breaker, a game
- 49:13Speaker 9: winner and X factor in Holland. I feel like they
- 49:16Speaker 9: are a team that has endured some difficult games as well.
- 49:20Speaker 9: But I don't think they're as a balanced or deep
- 49:24Speaker 9: as this England team is. And I think that's where
- 49:27Speaker 9: it really all falls apart. I think that England, with
- 49:32Speaker 9: the type of performance they put out yesterday, sometimes you
- 49:35Speaker 9: got to do it. You got to be able to
- 49:36Speaker 9: win the dramatic moments. I've said this in your show before.
- 49:39Speaker 9: You got to be able to endure those difficult games
- 49:41Speaker 9: in order to really make a run in a World Cup.
- 49:44Speaker 9: And I thought they did that in Mexico with the elevation,
- 49:47Speaker 9: with a hostile crowd, with one guy less on the field,
- 49:53Speaker 9: and you were able to push through. So yes, I
- 49:55Speaker 9: would absolutely think that moving forward. This England team with
- 49:59Speaker 9: the op Barol talent, individual talent in Harry Kane, in Soka,
- 50:05Speaker 9: in Rise, I mean, they really have a very good team,
- 50:08Speaker 9: that's deep. I think Gordon has been phenomenal to now.
- 50:12Speaker 9: He was a problem yesterday. I mean they could not
- 50:18Speaker 9: hold Gordon on that left flank. I mean he was
- 50:20Speaker 9: just running loose and they were unable to really hold
- 50:22Speaker 9: him down. The new Barcelona acquisition. So yeah, this team
- 50:25Speaker 9: definitely has the talent level and they have the mental
- 50:29Speaker 9: component to be far in this tournament.
- 50:33Speaker 2: England is on the side of the bracket where Switzerland
- 50:36Speaker 2: Colombia meeting around of sixteen tomorrow in Vancouver. Argentina and
- 50:40Speaker 2: Egypt play tomorrow. Argentina winner probably Argentina comes out of
- 50:45Speaker 2: that group, although Colombia is a really dangerous squad, so
- 50:48Speaker 2: they're on England's on the Argentina side of the bracket
- 50:50Speaker 2: of the United States is on the side of the
- 50:52Speaker 2: bracket with Portugal Spain. They'll play the winner. The winner
- 50:55Speaker 2: of the US Belgium will play Portugal Spain in Los
- 50:57Speaker 2: Angeles in the round of eight on Friday. In France,
- 51:00Speaker 2: of course, is already on that side of the bracket.
- 51:02Speaker 2: They played Morocco Thursday in a round of eight. The
- 51:05Speaker 2: first round of eight match Thursday, one o'clock our time.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Nico Moreno joining US from sounder at hard MLS Espianol,
- 51:11Speaker 2: Fox thirteen Sports Television World Cup analysts Okay, match at
- 51:15Speaker 2: hand to day five o'clock here in Seattle, Belgium. Not really,
- 51:19Speaker 2: it's belgiumself. The entire tournament needed a miraculous escape from
- 51:23Speaker 2: down two nil in the last ten to fifteen minutes
- 51:26Speaker 2: of that match against Senegal when they got out just
- 51:28Speaker 2: outrun for most of that match, yet they still had
- 51:31Speaker 2: to bring it. They still have a Ukaku, they've got Doku.
- 51:33Speaker 2: They they've got people that make this a problematic matchup
- 51:38Speaker 2: to say the least. If they play to their capabilities.
- 51:40Speaker 2: What do you think the US has to do today
- 51:42Speaker 2: to beat Belgium Nico.
- 51:45Speaker 9: This team needs to start off the game with high
- 51:49Speaker 9: intensity and not just getting an early goal, but dominating posession.
- 51:55Speaker 9: I've seen a Belgian team throughout the group stage that
- 51:59Speaker 9: half not being able to really control tempo. It seems
- 52:03Speaker 9: like they want to, but they're unable to do so.
- 52:06Speaker 9: Throughout various games. You've seen this team struggle without the ball,
- 52:12Speaker 9: struggle to defend, and so I think that from the
- 52:14Speaker 9: very beginning, this US's national team needs to control the ball,
- 52:19Speaker 9: take it away, protect yourself with it, switch the point
- 52:22Speaker 9: of attack consistently, really get them to defend, because that's
- 52:26Speaker 9: not what they want to do. Jeremy Joku does not
- 52:27Speaker 9: want to be pinned back trying to make sure that
- 52:31Speaker 9: their genio desk is not getting behind him. He does
- 52:33Speaker 9: not want to be covering space whenever McKenny impacts those
- 52:38Speaker 9: half spaces in between the lions. Right, So I think
- 52:41Speaker 9: that from the very beginning, Marisa Puchettino and this team
- 52:46Speaker 9: need to go out like I don't know a rocket,
- 52:50Speaker 9: right from the very beginning, and with all of this
- 52:53Speaker 9: controversy that I don't know how much we'll get into.
- 52:56Speaker 9: I am worried about one thing. I am very concerned,
- 53:01Speaker 9: and maybe I'm getting ahead of this, but I was
- 53:03Speaker 9: just gonna go ahead and say it. The one thing
- 53:06Speaker 9: that I saw from this Belgium team that wasn't quite
- 53:08Speaker 9: clicking is that they weren't looking like a cohesive unit.
- 53:13Speaker 9: They weren't really a unified team we saw in Senegal.
- 53:18Speaker 9: They didn't just suffer to the game, but they were
- 53:20Speaker 9: at each other's throat. I've mentioned this before where Romelo
- 53:26Speaker 9: Locaku has to stop a fight between Trossard and Tillman's
- 53:31Speaker 9: in the hydration break of the second half.
- 53:34Speaker 2: He's trying to.
- 53:34Speaker 9: Get everybody together. Rudy Garcia ends up taking out Jeremy
- 53:38Speaker 9: Doku and the Bruner, who both come off extremely upset.
- 53:43Speaker 9: He seemed like they were really quite gealous. And now
- 53:45Speaker 9: with all this controversy, I am a little bit afraid
- 53:49Speaker 9: that they have some of that bulletin board material to
- 53:54Speaker 9: get the team just playing together and unified and cemented,
- 53:59Speaker 9: and that could be a bigger problem than maybe most
- 54:02Speaker 9: are thinking.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Of Nico Morena joining us here on ninety three point
- 54:06Speaker 2: three KJRFM about six hours less six hours until the
- 54:10Speaker 2: United States and Belgium play in the World Cup four
- 54:14Speaker 2: chance in the quarterfinals. All right, let's get to Balligan
- 54:17Speaker 2: the whole thing. I mean, we can go back to
- 54:19Speaker 2: the red card itself. You know, soccer is so much
- 54:22Speaker 2: better than I the process for overturning this and suspending
- 54:26Speaker 2: this suspension as it were, how's this look for? FIFA
- 54:30Speaker 2: has its own issues of corruption and well documented history,
- 54:35Speaker 2: the whole thing. As a soccer guy, how does this
- 54:38Speaker 2: whole thing sit with you? In the fact that Belligan
- 54:40Speaker 2: is going to be on the pitch here in six hours.
- 54:43Speaker 9: So it is extremely complicated. I mean, I myself find
- 54:48Speaker 9: a lot of indecision in what I want to think
- 54:51Speaker 9: about this, right because I am of two thoughts. Right
- 54:55Speaker 9: on one side, I totally feel like there is some
- 54:58Speaker 9: sort of sports justice that Bolligan will be able to
- 55:02Speaker 9: play this game, because I thought that var was used
- 55:05Speaker 9: inadequately and not to the regulation by using those still
- 55:10Speaker 9: frames to give Bollagan that red card. However, the way
- 55:15Speaker 9: that this is kind of coming together reminds me a
- 55:18Speaker 9: lot of and your family is going to kind of
- 55:20Speaker 9: maybe see what I'm talking about here, because it felt
- 55:22Speaker 9: all like the talk rule where nobody really knew that
- 55:26Speaker 9: that was the rule, and then all of a sudden
- 55:28Speaker 9: it decides a game and now it becomes a thing.
- 55:32Speaker 9: This article twenty seven is being invoked to suspend the suspension,
- 55:37Speaker 9: to stop the suspension or the disciplinary measure that was
- 55:42Speaker 9: given to Bolligan is what it has everybody kind of
- 55:47Speaker 9: running for the hills that there isn't any clarity from FIFA.
- 55:50Speaker 9: There's a lot of individuals, both in the soccer world
- 55:54Speaker 9: and in the political spectrum that are trying to take
- 55:58Speaker 9: credit for this, or they're saying that they calls. There's
- 56:00Speaker 9: so many layers of this thing that the reality at
- 56:04Speaker 9: the end of the day is that the optics are
- 56:06Speaker 9: bad because it does feel like the host team is
- 56:10Speaker 9: getting some sort of advantage to get a player that
- 56:13Speaker 9: she's been suspended in this game. However, I want to
- 56:15Speaker 9: clarify this is not the team's fault. Anyone who is
- 56:21Speaker 9: implying that Mariso Buchettino should sit balligin for this game,
- 56:25Speaker 9: even though is going to be allowed or he's going
- 56:28Speaker 9: to be available, it's crazy. I mean, look, the guys
- 56:33Speaker 9: are there to win, to do a job, to create
- 56:37Speaker 9: an objective and get to the final or win a title,
- 56:41Speaker 9: and if completely out of their control, FIFA has decided
- 56:45Speaker 9: that Color and Boligan is going to be able to
- 56:47Speaker 9: play this game, then you got to play them. You
- 56:50Speaker 9: cannot just sit them. So the guys it's out of
- 56:54Speaker 9: their control. All they have to do is go and
- 56:56Speaker 9: play this game with whatever tools they have, and if
- 56:58Speaker 9: that's one of them, then that. But unfortunately, the narrative
- 57:03Speaker 9: at one point or another, if this USA team wins tonight,
- 57:07Speaker 9: I think they will, there's gonna be some sort of narrative,
- 57:10Speaker 9: an asterisch if you will, about the rules being bent
- 57:16Speaker 9: for this uster's national team. And I feel like it's
- 57:19Speaker 9: unfair to a group that has earned every single match,
- 57:24Speaker 9: in every single minute that they've been on this tournament.
- 57:27Speaker 2: It's the ultimate that he's playing, however, and it sounds
- 57:31Speaker 2: like two wrongs made it right here, that it was
- 57:33Speaker 2: wrong that there was a red card to begin with,
- 57:34Speaker 2: and there was wrong how the process was to put
- 57:36Speaker 2: him back in. But so is that the takeaway the
- 57:42Speaker 2: two wrongs made it right and two wrongs shouldn't make
- 57:44Speaker 2: it right here? Or is the fact in your mind
- 57:46Speaker 2: he should have never been red card? First, and explain
- 57:49Speaker 2: what you mean about var was misapplied here with the
- 57:52Speaker 2: stop frame in the slowdown.
- 57:55Speaker 9: Yeah, so I stand firmly that volume should have never
- 58:03Speaker 9: been given a red card using the slowdown of dar
- 58:08Speaker 9: and the still pictures without the benefit of the context
- 58:15Speaker 9: of the play and the leverage of his body and
- 58:17Speaker 9: the fact that he was playing space and not the defender.
- 58:21Speaker 9: FIFA to their I don't know if credit has been
- 58:25Speaker 9: very vague with some of the wording, and so intent
- 58:29Speaker 9: kind of gets taken out of the situation, which to
- 58:32Speaker 9: me is ludicrous because if I'm fighting for space to
- 58:36Speaker 9: get the ball and I don't see where your foots at,
- 58:39Speaker 9: I should not be penalized for that, and he shouldn't
- 58:42Speaker 9: be taken as reckless because if you use a still
- 58:46Speaker 9: frame of the impact and the severity of that injury,
- 58:51Speaker 9: sure you can make a case, but you have to
- 58:54Speaker 9: allow context and the regular speed of that play to
- 58:58Speaker 9: determine whether it was malicious or reckless or not. And
- 59:03Speaker 9: that's where I feel like it was misinterpret So now
- 59:08Speaker 9: do two wrongs make it right?
- 59:09Speaker 1: Well?
- 59:09Speaker 9: Fortunately, yeah, because of the way FIFA is kind of
- 59:13Speaker 9: putting it out, because this article twenty seven does give
- 59:17Speaker 9: FIFA or this judicial body the benefit to decide whether
- 59:23Speaker 9: or not he should be suspended. And let me clarify
- 59:25Speaker 9: I one thing. The red cards not being taken away.
- 59:28Speaker 9: He's being put into a probational period where he's gonna
- 59:32Speaker 9: be able to continue to play, and if he gets
- 59:35Speaker 9: another red card, then he would essentially serve both of
- 59:39Speaker 9: those red cards or that could be suspended for a
- 59:42Speaker 9: longer period of time. So he kind of goes into
- 59:45Speaker 9: this probational period as he plays for the US seven.
- 59:49Speaker 9: So it's so complicated and complex that it would have
- 59:53Speaker 9: been not just nice but almost important for FIFA to
- 59:58Speaker 9: come out with the statement of their own But he's
- 1:00:00Speaker 9: I don't think we're not going to get it.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: No, not. At this point, they actually said that Belgium's
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: attempt to appeal or ask for an explanation this morning
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: was quote inadmissible and have cleared Balgan to play. That
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: it was as of this morning from FIFA. Nigo Moreno,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: the winner of this match, of course, you know, plays
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: the winner of Portugal in Spain. That match begins in
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: the round of sixteen at noon before the US match
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: at five o'clock in Belgium across the street from me
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: at Woomenfield. How do. Portugal looked like itself for the
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: first time in the tournament the last match, and we
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: had Brad Evans on talking about how if Ronaldo can
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: assert himself and be the force that he has always
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: been but is obviously in the fading moments of his career,
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: that he sees Portugal with a real shot today that
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: this isn't the same Spain team. How do you view
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: that match?
- 1:00:47Speaker 9: Definitely have a shot. But if this Spain hasn't been brilliant,
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: neither has Portugal. I mean, I still think that Croatia,
- 1:00:58Speaker 9: if they're not get maybe they didn't get robbed, but
- 1:01:01Speaker 9: they deserve more out of that last final minute of
- 1:01:05Speaker 9: that game where unfortunately the equalizer gets this allowed, but
- 1:01:10Speaker 9: they really put Portugal into a bind in the end
- 1:01:14Speaker 9: of that game. And look, this is the Croatia team
- 1:01:16Speaker 9: that is very aged, if you will, They are extremely veteran,
- 1:01:22Speaker 9: not the Croatia of old. Essentially this is the end
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: of a generation and they were able to go toe
- 1:01:29Speaker 9: to toe with this Portugal team that I continue to
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: think that, yes, they're one of the best midfielding groups
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: when it comes to the attacking components, but defensively they have.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Now looked good.
- 1:01:38Speaker 9: So Spain on their end, they also are coming from
- 1:01:42Speaker 9: a game where they were able to get some goals
- 1:01:44Speaker 9: on board. They were able to really get Lemol Jamal
- 1:01:49Speaker 9: go in. I think not to the same effect, but
- 1:01:53Speaker 9: I think that poor Road the right back is starting
- 1:01:56Speaker 9: to attack the the system that Spain wants to play
- 1:02:03Speaker 9: a little bit better, and that's given them some of
- 1:02:05Speaker 9: those overloads that they need in order to get that
- 1:02:09Speaker 9: team going offensively. So although I agree with Brad that
- 1:02:13Speaker 9: Portugal has a chance to anybody to beat Spain, I
- 1:02:18Speaker 9: still think that the talent level and the depth of
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: this Spain team with Padri, with pen with Rodri is
- 1:02:26Speaker 9: going to surpass what I've seen from Portugal. Alternament long.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Portugal Spain Noon today, US Belgium five o'clock at Lumenfields today,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: the last of six matches of the World Cup here
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: in Seattle. The winners of those two matches will play
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Friday in Los Angeles in the round of eight, the quarterfinals,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: where the US has only been one time in modern
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: New World Cup history. Nico Moreno, I know you got
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: to get into Seattle. It's already filling up down here.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Get in here. But I'll see you this afternoon at
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: the match.
- 1:02:53Speaker 9: Thank you, sir, thank you, and I'll see you at
- 1:02:57Speaker 9: the stadium. Let's go us say, I will say, I
- 1:03:00Speaker 9: am excited to see how electric the Adam Ifrew's going
- 1:03:03Speaker 9: to be today and Shadow is gonna win again, baby Shadow.
- 1:03:06Speaker 9: You guys are the best when it comes to making
- 1:03:09Speaker 9: just the right environment.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: So let's go. Thank you, Nico, enjoy the match, and
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: I'll be with him in the press box, Nico Moreno. Yeah,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: this is it's already full filling up here in ox
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: On Occidental on First Avenue South or Belgium. Fans going
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: across the street for their own pre match party. Peer
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: fifty eight has the United States pre match party and
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: they're gonna march onto the stadium from there.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: It's a fun march. I would recommend being down there now.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: Yeah, going down there now, and probably like one thirty
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: two o'clock to thirty, maybe they'll start heading into the match.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: The gates open, by the way, three hout. If you're
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: fortunate enough to have a ticket to this match, the
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: gates open three hours before the match. I don't know
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: if i'd recommend getting in that early with the ticket
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: or the concession prices, You're better off staying outside. But yeah,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: the biggest global.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Go hang out with Greg.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you can do that.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Go to Jimmys guys.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Yes, I'll be here for a while and then before
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: heading into the stadium. Up next to your chance to
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: be a part of the show. The talkback live on
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app. Leave a thirty second voicemail where replay
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: that your text. Are you watching the match today Baligan?
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Should he be playing the Mariners?
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: Yes? He should. Sorry, I that was my talkback.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: That is now at Triple A. We'reniers. That to coma Verniers.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: You can comment on that. We'll read back your text
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: next On ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 1:05:04Speaker 10: Greg Jessaman, what's up. This is your friend Greg and
- 1:05:07Speaker 10: Huntington Beach. Not presently in Huntington Beach. I flew up
- 1:05:11Speaker 10: last night. There's no way I'm gonna let this thing
- 1:05:14Speaker 10: go down to my hometown and miss it. I am
- 1:05:17Speaker 10: here in Seattle. It's gorgeous. Last minute tickets to the game.
- 1:05:21Speaker 10: Don't ask me how much I spent, but they're gonna
- 1:05:23Speaker 10: be worth it, gonna be marching. Maybe come say hi
- 1:05:25Speaker 10: at Jimmy's. But this is an incredible event. Great job
- 1:05:29Speaker 10: hosting it. Go USA.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Aout. Yeah, he's been a bug time listener of the show.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: My brother was in Huntington Beach, so that's how we
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: bonded over that. He's lived to Huntings Beach for forty years.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: My brother. He mentioned how much he paid. I just
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: checked on the eighth second sight. It's fifteen fifty, which
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: is actually less than the US in Australian match that
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: was here in the Yeah, it was it was like
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: over two thousand right the game started and it's being
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: about two thousand. I have noticed this because I've been
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: trying to get my son into some of them. He
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: went to the Round Egypt match. But the closer you wait,
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: in general, the tickets go up because sites start taking
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: them down, and then the demand goes up because there's
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: fewer tickets available. So if you're thinking wait and wait
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: and wait till right before the match, so far anecdotally
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: that doesn't work. The prices just go up. So right
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: now fifteen hundred to seventeen hundred, I see seventeen hundred
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: and three hundred level I see nineteen hundred in the
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: world bram Zone. If it was a Sounders game in
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: the south end zone, lower bowl, but not as much.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: I mean it's a relative term.
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: I mean everything's relative when it comes to ticket prices.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Yes it is. Four nine four five one is that
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: the Komadad's text sign. We read back your text every
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: day at eleven thirty. And there's a bunch on there
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: for about this World Cup in particular. Forty five on
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: all caps.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: Let him play, yes Balagan.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Balagan yes? Four five says yes, Baligan should play. Should
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: not have been a red card yellow at best, it
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: shouldn't have known corrupt raff trying to ruin the US.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: That's my buddy. We co st guard O day listener.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: Appreciate you, sir. He should have never have two o six.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: You should he'd be allowed to play, never got should
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: never gotten a red card in the first place. Agreed,
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: two six.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: Guess what they still won.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: With ten Man the second goal with Tillman too. Nothing
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: went over Bosnia Herscovina that got the US into the
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: match today. Two o six says this guy knows his soccer,
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: meaning Nico. Great guests, Yeah, appreciate that. Nico was really
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: good explaining the ballot. He's amazing and how complicated it. Yeah,
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: he's his wife is a native Mexican who is not
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: a very happy campers of last night, and he's he's
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: talked in the past how he gets to the doghouse
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: from Mexico loses. He might have been on the couch west.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: Yeah, well, hopefully you got a good night's sleep there.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: I appreciate me.
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: I mean, if you're prepared, you got the right pillows
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: and everything.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Marcus our good friend. And two of six is I'm
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: not heading down to one o'clock and I'm getting worried. Yeah,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: it's filling up. They haven't closed the roads yet. They're
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: closing them at one o'clock around the stadium. First Avenue
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: South will close at Edgar Martinez Drive, which is right
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: where the home plate entrance to T Mobile Park is.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: That's as far north as you can go on First
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Avenue after one o'clock. But as of now, Floral Brom
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: First Avenue South, I'll still open until one o'clock. There's
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: already a line outside Victory Hall. The Belgian watch party
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: is going to have commenced and they'll watch the Portugal
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Spain match there.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: It's gonna be a really fun time down there.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: It is. It already is very festive here. I'm surprised
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: actually how many people are here? Two five three says
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: quote huge day and capped huge day for the United States,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: making history in the world's largest organized, single sporting event
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: my generation will ever see on American soil. Spoil. When
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: you hear our president speak with FIFA at the last
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: match regarding the red card, I'm out, excuse me if
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: any and y'all think this is a win. It isn't
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: tarnished and stolen. I do the sporting of it, being
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: as close to the event and actually interviewing the players
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: and coaches, they will not see this as taint. And
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: this is the world's biggest sporting event. If they win
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: and get to the quarterfinals, nobody's going to be saying
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: how there was possible political influence, nothing, none of that.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: No, it's just a headline. It's just a headline. I
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: mean everyone was calling everyone about that call.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and at the time I talked about how that
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: should not have been a red card.
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: It shouldn't have and V agree. I think everyone agrees
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: about that.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Well, there were some that said, look at his ankles,
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: but Ben sideways, but.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: The accident was not intentional.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: Well, there is intent. But the real issue is that
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: VAR interceding where it wasn't suppose and in a way
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: it wasn't supposed to. It's not the purpose. It's really
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: the whole thing is started by the VAR officials in
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: the booth who made this decision to stop action, stop
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: frame and send it to the official, the referee, who
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: was then compelled to call for the red card. Once
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: the guy I've watched if you noticed through the World Cup,
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: once the guy goes to the monitor, he's coming out
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: issue a ruling in favor of the red card or
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: disalogo or whatever it is, to overturn the ruling on
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: the field. It's just the way it is. But VR,
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: as Brad Evans mentioned, and as Nico Moreno mentioned, you're
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: not allowed by VR rule. You are not supposed to
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: use slow motion or stop frame to rule on a
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: specific moment in a match and an incident in a match.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: You're supposed to do it in real time as the
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: referee has saw it. And he again did not even
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: issue a yellow card for the infraction. He didn't even
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: call it a foul other than the fact that elegant
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: if you remember, Balgan was receiving a pass and was
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: challenged from behind by the Bosnian player before the incident happened.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: So there's no way of him even knowing where his
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: bankle or foot was.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: No there was, Yeah, So that's why I got very
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: mad at Var.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: But that is and in a sense, it is two
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: wrongs making it right. It was wrong for the red card.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: It's by most people standard wrong to overturn the red
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: card suspension. And here we are two six Greg. When
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: you talk Vancouver Soccer, I'm curious how the grass is
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: in BC Place. How they do it assuming there's no
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: role in rollout like Phoenix, Well they did it like Seattle.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: They have it on a platform that's above the turf
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: field the BC Lions play on. There is a fabric
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: roof to BC Place. It was closed because FIFA made
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: it be closed for the entire tournament. And the weather
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: had been great up till now, but Thursday night it
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: was raining in was about fifty five degrees fahrenheit and.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: So it wasn't na comfort for us.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Well, the roof closed was great in that sense, but
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: it wasn't true soccer and soccer and the Dome's weird
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: Portaworn Spain are going to be playing in Dallas, but
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: it's probably three hundred degrees in Dallas right now, but
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: they'll be in a dome. But I didn't bring it
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: up yet. But I'll talk about real briefly. The Vancouver scene.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: It was downtown and marches to the match and the
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Swiss fans and the Algerian fan. There were more Algerian
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: fans in the yard than there were Swiss fans, by
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: the way, and they were louder. They just had nothing
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: to cheer about. But it was it was muted compared
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: to the Seattle scene. It was muted, and I got
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: a lot of static form my BC and Canadian friends
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: talking about that and mentioning that it was muted and
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: it wasn't as loud. It was the day after Canada
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: Get Day. A lot of people were hungover. It was
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: two teams that not strongly supported inside Canada. Canada was
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: supposed to play in that match, but it lost to
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Switzerland and it caused them to go to Los Angeles
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: for the Round of thirty two. That was supposed to
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: be a Canadian match. Instead it was Switzerland and smashing
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: the party. So all of that conflated in the weather
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: and it just wasn't as loud as Seattle for sure,
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: and I mean that's the experience I had. I wrote
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: about it for the news Tribute at the Newstribune dot com.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: If you want to see that story.
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: Everybody read greg Yeah, he's fabulous. Thanks, I read you
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: all the time.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: I think four two by says when missing this game
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: for the world as an American, No, Flows should not
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: be allowed to play. Bad calls are a part of life.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: There should be a review process, but there isn't. Belgium
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: have to make a new game game playing twenty four
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: hours out. USMNT have to make a new game plan
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: twenty fours hours out. Haldi Wright and Ricardo Pepe know
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: the White House doesn't want them to play, which has
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: had to fill them with pride for wearing the USA jersey.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: He says in sarcasm. This decision will follow young Flow
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: for the rest of his career. It's not even his
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: faulty had nothing to do with it. England got a
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: red card yesterday. Should King Charles call FIFA to care?
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: I don't know. We don't have kings here.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: That was studs up. That'd be.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: A little Can we use the word gregious?
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Studs up? Yeah, sorry, go ahead. Oh no, easy call.
- 1:14:19Speaker 11: What my grandpa would say, former referee, every time there's
- 1:14:22Speaker 11: a past interference, Easy call.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Easy call? Yeah, I mean studs up.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: I mean, what is it? Show your true colors? If
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: a duck's a duck, if it quacks.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: For two five I'm not a soccer fan, but I
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: will watch today. For two oh six, I've watched a
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: few US men national team games at the Portland American
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: Outlaws bar bar, but I think tonight I'll just watch
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: it home. Being from Seattle, I want to enjoy the
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: broadcast rather than being a bar crowd driving out the sound.
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: That's the beauty of this event too. You don't have
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: to be a soccer fan. You can be a fan
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: of your nation.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: Two five three, I'm watching double exclamation points headed down
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: to Pioneer Square directly after work. FIFA bots this red
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: card deal, but I do think they got it right
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: in the end. I don't think it should have been
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: a red card since there wasn't a foul initially. Then
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: that we have to replay that called red agreed.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: I think we ended up exactly where we should be.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: So yeah, I appreciate that. Thank you appreciate it. Thanks
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: for the text line. I'm trying to speak you up.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: I'm sick, got like one hundred and five degree fever.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: If you're wondering why it, it'll sound seriously. My son's like,
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: you're going today, right, Yeah, I'm going today.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: This is a big deal, yep, and it's gonna be fabulous.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Up next, and for Ness Anderson Hurst are sitting right
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: next to me at Jimmy's on First, right across from
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: Oxmental Avenue, which is already filling up before the US
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: and Belgium play in the World Cup Round of sixteen.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: And Andrews are next to say what's on their show,
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: which is the pre pregame show before US Belgium. Butch
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Anders will be a part of a ninety three point
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: three kJ.
- 1:16:05Speaker 12: R FM Welcome back Greg bellat Jimmy's on First, which
- 1:17:03Speaker 12: is already full and popping.
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: So is Occidental Avenue right behind me. So is First
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: Avenue south of lines getting into Victory Hall. So is
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: the woman walking by me with a red and white
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: speckled wig. It's already on and we're still five hours
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: before the US and Belgium in the Round of sixteen.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: I just want to mention it we talked about tickets
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: for this. If you're trying to get in, you can
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: still get online in the secondary site for about fifteen
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: hundred dollars in the third deck nineteen hundred in the
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: Royal Brom section of the south end zone of Royal
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: Brom section for a Sounders game. But as I mentioned you,
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: it's not like it's a Mariners game. We were talking
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: about Ian and Andrews where or Seahawk game. Whill you
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: wait until the last second and people are dumping their
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: tickets and the prices will go down. FIFA controls even
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: the secondary market tickets, so they take those off. I've
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: noticed about an hour hour and a half before the
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: match that you can't find tickets anymore. If there are
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: any left, they're going sky high because the market has
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: dried up and there are fewer tickets available. So don't wait.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: I guess is the advice Andrew Hrris and I and
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Fronessa next to.
- 1:18:09Speaker 13: Those, Well, that's good advice because I think a lot
- 1:18:12Speaker 13: of people are used to sure you know the game,
- 1:18:16Speaker 13: like like technically, cracking games are all sold out, Technically
- 1:18:20Speaker 13: Seahawk games are all sold out, but we all know
- 1:18:22Speaker 13: the secondary market there's always tickets. And like I know
- 1:18:25Speaker 13: a lot of people that come down here for Seahawks
- 1:18:27Speaker 13: games and waited out at one of the bars until
- 1:18:29Speaker 13: the last minute. See they can get you know, the
- 1:18:31Speaker 13: pick because guy, if you're unloading tickets, you're gonna unoad
- 1:18:33Speaker 13: them at some point you're not going you're up on
- 1:18:34Speaker 13: going in. And same thing with cracking. You'll guys sit
- 1:18:37Speaker 13: there at Queen Amber. I got a couple of friends.
- 1:18:38Speaker 13: They make a habit. They go to the Queen an
- 1:18:40Speaker 13: beer all hang out for a while, have a pretzel,
- 1:18:42Speaker 13: have a couple of pints and just kind of keep
- 1:18:43Speaker 13: them in.
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: Ah boom, now's time.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: To buy them.
- 1:18:45Speaker 13: Yep, like six forty five or whatever, will be even
- 1:18:47Speaker 13: seven o'clock for seven to ten, first first drop of
- 1:18:50Speaker 13: the puck. You're saying you don't if you do that
- 1:18:53Speaker 13: down here, great bell's telling you you're not.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: Getting in, no, because there won't be any tickets to buy.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Good to know, Yes, that's good enough. FIFA controls them
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: and pull them off the sites. FIFA cartel. Never heard
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: of them, cartel, this big deal. Ian you've been here
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: a day or two, Andrews, you've been here at day
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: or three, and played soccer here. Where's this rank in
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: your sports days?
- 1:19:12Speaker 13: It's not even it's not even a question of soccer,
- 1:19:14Speaker 13: not a question of it's then it's just the biggest
- 1:19:18Speaker 13: thing that's ever happened in our town sports wise, period.
- 1:19:20Speaker 13: And there's nothing that could greg here's the thing. Nothing
- 1:19:22Speaker 13: could ever rival it.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: No, not on a because of how global is it's global.
- 1:19:26Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, like like we're never gonna get a super
- 1:19:29Speaker 13: Bowl here. And even then it's this is no one's
- 1:19:34Speaker 13: coming down in early February and hanging out for seven
- 1:19:36Speaker 13: hours before a game or going to the waterfront and
- 1:19:40Speaker 13: watching it, whether it's on the pier or the bro
- 1:19:42Speaker 13: barge or wherever you're gonna do it at like that.
- 1:19:45Speaker 13: This is just different level, man, this is just different.
- 1:19:48Speaker 13: We're never gonna in my lifetime, We'll never we'll see
- 1:19:51Speaker 13: this again, probably not in my lifetime, probably not. Yeah,
- 1:19:54Speaker 13: I just it's it's I mean, ninety four was the
- 1:19:56Speaker 13: last one, so what twenty two years thirty two years later?
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Right, thirty two years.
- 1:20:00Speaker 11: Later, And that's relatively recent compared to other countries. England
- 1:20:04Speaker 11: hasn't hosted since nineteen sixty six, so wow, really yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: That's weird.
- 1:20:11Speaker 13: They might win this year. They might if they got out. Okay,
- 1:20:14Speaker 13: last night, we know they did the plane take off
- 1:20:16Speaker 13: for Mexico City. Can you imagine I mean the fireworks
- 1:20:18Speaker 13: being shot at their hotel the night before.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Not outside their hotel, at the hotel.
- 1:20:24Speaker 13: At the building, at their rooms. Yeah, it just I
- 1:20:29Speaker 13: file was England. I would get us to help stop celebrating.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: We're out.
- 1:20:33Speaker 13: We are out of here right now. See, that's they're
- 1:20:36Speaker 13: not used to losing in that stadium.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: They are not.
- 1:20:38Speaker 11: It's the first time they've ever lost a World Cup match,
- 1:20:40Speaker 11: you know the Mexico has in that stadium, and that's
- 1:20:42Speaker 11: not like oh, it's like oh okay, you know, it's
- 1:20:44Speaker 11: like what the first or second time they posted? No,
- 1:20:46Speaker 11: this is they're the only host city that has now
- 1:20:48Speaker 11: hosted three World Cups.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Yeah, the Azteca.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: So it is hell out of dodge.
- 1:20:53Speaker 11: Yeah, they don't lose their they haven't lost their in
- 1:20:55Speaker 11: competitive match in thirteen years.
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: Weird, there was no outcry for that, right, it's happened.
- 1:21:02Speaker 13: Well, but think about who was the team to play
- 1:21:04Speaker 13: Mexico before equittor Equitter remember this, they had the same thing.
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: Yeah with the hotel. Yeah, we don't care about that.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: Right, that's home field advantage. Yeah.
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: Well but but I kind of know what I mean.
- 1:21:17Speaker 13: I mean, my point is is like there's a lot
- 1:21:21Speaker 13: of stuff we could make a big deal about, right,
- 1:21:23Speaker 13: Like there's a lot of I mean, Iran's pissed off
- 1:21:26Speaker 13: because they practice in Tijuana. I say, that's your problem,
- 1:21:29Speaker 13: not anybody else, but you know, but still like everyone's
- 1:21:32Speaker 13: you knows, other teams are complaining about travel.
- 1:21:34Speaker 11: Even yesterday, Uh, one of the prime ministers or someone
- 1:21:37Speaker 11: high up in the Parliament in England personally stepped in
- 1:21:40Speaker 11: to stop FIFA bringing forward to England's kickoff last night,
- 1:21:43Speaker 11: as he feared Mexico are trying to gain an advantage.
- 1:21:47Speaker 11: Why is that not a big story compared to what's
- 1:21:49Speaker 11: going on.
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: I mean, let's go just a little old US is
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: out there making waves.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Yeah, what do you guys have today? We got something
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: to do with soccer?
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: This would be a fun show.
- 1:21:57Speaker 13: Andrew's first of all, shout out to Jazz sticking around
- 1:22:00Speaker 13: and gonna run run our show. Yeah, Jess Jackson's already here.
- 1:22:04Speaker 13: Andrews is here. Jackson Andrews have the pregame show. We
- 1:22:07Speaker 13: should remind err at four thirty. We are carrying the
- 1:22:09Speaker 13: game tonight. I think we need to emphasize that we
- 1:22:12Speaker 13: will have the game on ninety three point three KJFM,
- 1:22:14Speaker 13: So if you're unlucky and driving around and maybe have
- 1:22:17Speaker 13: kids sports or coming home from work, we will have
- 1:22:19Speaker 13: the match for you five o'clock kickoff, four thirty pre game,
- 1:22:22Speaker 13: but really the pregame started with Grego at ten o'clock
- 1:22:24Speaker 13: this morning. Here, Jimmy's up first, so my soccer guy
- 1:22:27Speaker 13: Andrews is gonna be with me. We'll spend the first
- 1:22:28Speaker 13: hour talking about all of the different things going on
- 1:22:31Speaker 13: with this match, and clearly controversy, everyone piling on the US.
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: You can go pound sands, Switzerland.
- 1:22:38Speaker 13: Chiming in anytime, Swiss Swiss, of all people, the Swiss
- 1:22:41Speaker 13: are gonna take a stand.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: You're yeah, so they're they're pissed off. Everyone's mad. We'll
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: talk about that.
- 1:22:48Speaker 13: We will get baseball in well Molly Wop at one
- 1:22:50Speaker 13: o'clock with Nathan and Chris. Not sure how they're gonna
- 1:22:53Speaker 13: handle a five in one week. Uh, and then Danny
- 1:22:55Speaker 13: Jackson will join us at two o'clock.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: So there we go. That's and Anders Jackson felt right
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: next to me here at Jimmy's on First, across the
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: street from Luomenfield, on the biggest sports day in Seattle history,
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: the US and Belgium five hours from now. It's all
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: I'm talking pregame, during game, postgame, play by play, at
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: the game. It's all right here on ninety three point
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: three KJRFM
