- 2:12Speaker 5: Adam Harris is here too.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Emotional support.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Adam Harris from Mountain Stage is here as well. Thank
- 2:18Speaker 5: you both for being here today.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Join to the world.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Thursday and Friday night starts at eight at the Culture
- 2:24Speaker 5: Center on the Capitol Grounds, produced by Western India Public
- 2:26Speaker 5: Broadcasting in the Mountain Stage.
- 2:28Speaker 3: How many years has this been going on by this
- 2:30Speaker 3: will be our thirty third year. And what led to
- 2:32Speaker 3: the beginning of it? I mean, where did the old
- 2:34Speaker 3: idea come from?
- 2:35Speaker 6: Well, the idea actually came from Don Wafer, who was
- 2:38Speaker 6: a producer at that time at Public Broadcasting. He just
- 2:42Speaker 6: made a suggestion and so we gave it a try
- 2:44Speaker 6: for a year and it took off and people came.
- 2:48Speaker 3: So thirty three years later, here we are. Yeah, they
- 2:51Speaker 3: keep coming. How's it changed over the years.
- 2:53Speaker 6: Well, when we started out, we started with guests from
- 2:59Speaker 6: within the region and now we have guests from all
- 3:02Speaker 6: over the all over the country.
- 3:04Speaker 7: You know.
- 3:05Speaker 6: Our guess like this year is the great Catherine Russell.
- 3:09Speaker 6: So but it's progressive. We have added to the band
- 3:15Speaker 6: this year. We'll have a guest trumpet player, James Moore.
- 3:19Speaker 6: So we've done things like that.
- 3:20Speaker 5: But let me tell you about James Moore. James Moore
- 3:23Speaker 5: is a is a very good friend of mine. He's
- 3:24Speaker 5: the president of West Virginia Wesleyan University. There's not a
- 3:27Speaker 5: lot of university presidents that say oh and on their
- 3:31Speaker 5: business card and oh, by the way, I'm a music
- 3:34Speaker 5: guy too. He's a fantastic human being. He and I
- 3:37Speaker 5: been French for years, but he is. He's a real
- 3:39Speaker 5: deal when it comes and you played with the best
- 3:40Speaker 5: of them, and you are the best of them, so
- 3:42Speaker 5: you know he's the real deal.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Yeah, he's a great trumpet player. So we call his
- 3:46Speaker 6: his West Virginia Westerland presidency his day job.
- 3:52Speaker 3: And this is a fun job he does on the weekend.
- 3:53Speaker 3: He does a great job.
- 3:54Speaker 8: Or that my job.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Adam talk about Adam Harrison Mountain say talk about Mountain
- 3:59Speaker 5: Stage and Public Broadcasting about their involvement with this.
- 4:02Speaker 9: Oh yeah, sure, so, I mean a lot of the
- 4:04Speaker 9: people who work on Mountain Stage to produce those shows.
- 4:07Speaker 9: We do twenty four live events a year. We all
- 4:10Speaker 9: kind of team up to work with Bob to produce
- 4:12Speaker 9: Joy to the World as well, and so a lot
- 4:13Speaker 9: of the same people are involved. And we also were
- 4:16Speaker 9: taping for television on Thursday night and that'll air next year,
- 4:19Speaker 9: and we take both nights for radio. And so Bob
- 4:21Speaker 9: and his team actually just edited last year's performance for
- 4:25Speaker 9: broadcast this year. And so like with every show, Dave,
- 4:27Speaker 9: as you know, there's a million details, yeah, to take
- 4:30Speaker 9: care of because it's not just a live event. It's
- 4:32Speaker 9: a live event with tickets, with rooming lists, and then
- 4:35Speaker 9: we have to do the set list, the playlists, the editing,
- 4:38Speaker 9: and that's all a huge undertaking, and Bob, you know,
- 4:40Speaker 9: steps right back in to help edit those broadcasts for
- 4:44Speaker 9: next year and so and I should tell folks to
- 4:46Speaker 9: try to look for the broadcast of last year's show.
- 4:48Speaker 9: Judith Owen, who's a Welsh singer now based in New Orleans,
- 4:52Speaker 9: and she brought her own horn player with her and
- 4:54Speaker 9: it's one of the best shows we did. Judith is
- 4:56Speaker 9: an amazing performer. She's a great singer and dancer and
- 5:00Speaker 9: even did like a heartbreaking song at the piano by herself,
- 5:03Speaker 9: so really engaging. And Catherine Russell, who is our guest
- 5:07Speaker 9: this year you can come see in Charleston Thursday and Friday,
- 5:10Speaker 9: is an incredible jazz and blues singer. And it's in
- 5:13Speaker 9: her blood, like right, Bob, Her dad was a bandleader, right.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Her dad, the late Great Lewis Russell, was the pianist, composer,
- 5:21Speaker 6: band leader and he was also Louis Armstrong's musical director
- 5:25Speaker 6: for many years.
- 5:26Speaker 9: So I mean talk about a lineage there in her blood.
- 5:29Speaker 9: You know, this music is in her blood. Plus you
- 5:31Speaker 9: know she's done studio and live work with folks like
- 5:36Speaker 9: Paul Simon, David Bowie. She toured with Bowie's band as
- 5:41Speaker 9: a backup singer Steely Dan exactly. And she's the tops
- 5:46Speaker 9: of jazz and blues singers. And she was just telling
- 5:49Speaker 9: me yesterday she went to her first Grateful Dead show
- 5:51Speaker 9: at the age of fourteen.
- 5:53Speaker 3: So she is diverse. She enjoys much more.
- 5:56Speaker 5: I mean you when you mentioned David Bowie and Steely
- 5:59Speaker 5: Dan and all Side and Grateful Dad and what more
- 6:02Speaker 5: could you want in there too?
- 6:03Speaker 3: And now she's playing with our with our folks here in.
- 6:05Speaker 9: Charleston and what I'm saying is world class musicians right here.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Aviland show on five eight Live is brought to you
- 6:11Speaker 5: in part by the all new Generations Forward the Hurricane,
- 6:14Speaker 5: your family and locally owned for dealership Generations providing their

- 6:26Speaker 5: them out to day in person, just off the Hurricane,
- 6:28Speaker 5: Exeter online at generations Forward dot com. One destination for
- 6:31Speaker 5: every generation Generations Forward see dealer for details. Bob, let's
- 6:34Speaker 5: talk about the folks in your band that are going
- 6:36Speaker 5: to be playing the local folks.
- 6:37Speaker 6: Right, actually great, Ryan Kennedy will be on guitar and
- 6:42Speaker 6: he's fantastic. Yeah, John Ingram another fantastic. Yes, he'll be
- 6:45Speaker 6: playing bass, and Tim Courtz on drumon.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 6: So that's that's my regular band. So we'll all be there.
- 6:51Speaker 5: So talk about the rehearsals for you guys for this show,
- 6:54Speaker 5: without the without the extras, without mister Moore and the
- 6:58Speaker 5: h and the others. But just talk about you your
- 7:00Speaker 5: gas preparation for this show.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Right, Well, we've had one rehearsal, that's all.
- 7:05Speaker 3: We're good. But we talked about it in line for
- 7:09Speaker 3: the bathroom, said you want to do this song, that's fine.
- 7:12Speaker 6: But now today actually we'll rehearse the band and then
- 7:17Speaker 6: we'll bring Katherine Russell in afterwards and rehearse with her,
- 7:22Speaker 6: and then we'll have a chance for a little run
- 7:23Speaker 6: through tomorrow before the show at the Culture Center.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Now for people that have never seen the show, and again,
- 7:29Speaker 5: this has been going on for thirty three years, we
- 7:31Speaker 5: know it's a Christmas show. But what goes into picking
- 7:33Speaker 5: out what songs you do because you can't obviously you
- 7:35Speaker 5: can't do everything.
- 7:36Speaker 3: What styles will you be doing?
- 7:38Speaker 6: Well, we do jazz arrangements of Christmas songs, and that's
- 7:43Speaker 6: that's the way we approach it. And you know, doing that,
- 7:47Speaker 6: we have to be careful not to take them out
- 7:50Speaker 6: too far, you know, because these songs belong to everybody
- 7:53Speaker 6: and everybody you know, they're classics. So we try to
- 7:57Speaker 6: stay somewhat in the lane of the original concept of
- 8:01Speaker 6: the song. But we'd like to add our on flavor
- 8:04Speaker 6: to those things to make them different.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Christmas songs are in some ways like the national anthem.
- 8:09Speaker 5: People don't like you messing with what's in their head.
- 8:12Speaker 5: But the thing about it is the arrangement that is
- 8:14Speaker 5: in my head may not be the same arrangement that's
- 8:17Speaker 5: in your head.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, people.
- 8:18Speaker 9: Cherish those songs and they cherish the arrangements too, and
- 8:21Speaker 9: that's why what kind of like what Bob is saying
- 8:23Speaker 9: is that you've got to stay close enough that everybody
- 8:25Speaker 9: hears what they love, that's.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Something that's new and interesting to them. Hopefully. Yeah, it's
- 8:30Speaker 3: gonna be it's gonna be a great concert.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Again.
- 8:31Speaker 5: It's actually two nights over at over at the Culture Center,
- 8:35Speaker 5: and you can get to we you know, try to
- 8:37Speaker 5: get your tickets in advance if you if you can
- 8:39Speaker 5: and talk about the ticket information.
- 8:41Speaker 9: Sure, yeah at wvpublic dot org slash joy that's where
- 8:46Speaker 9: you can go. Or if you just type Enjoy to
- 8:47Speaker 9: the World Thursday or Joy the World Friday, you'll get
- 8:49Speaker 9: the link. The tickets are all sold through event right,
- 8:53Speaker 9: and there are I think gonna be thirty five dollars
- 8:55Speaker 9: at the door, and there should be some available. We're
- 8:57Speaker 9: selling very well, but I think there'll still be some
- 8:59Speaker 9: seats available. What is general admission and the showtime is
- 9:02Speaker 9: eight o'clock. So I think we opened the doors to
- 9:04Speaker 9: the theater at seven point thirty, and I believe the
- 9:06Speaker 9: lobby will probably open at about seven o'clock.
- 9:08Speaker 5: And so Thursday night to night at the Christmas Parade
- 9:11Speaker 5: Chris Charleston, so people can can when they finish up there,
- 9:14Speaker 5: just head on over there to the show. And if
- 9:15Speaker 5: possibly the fact that doesn't work for you, then then
- 9:18Speaker 5: go check it out on Friday, and we're gonna have
- 9:19Speaker 5: a day. We'll have a little snow on the ground,
- 9:21Speaker 5: although with the rain today some of it may melt.
- 9:23Speaker 5: But there's more snow on the way they say for
- 9:24Speaker 5: Thursday night into Friday, So as long as we don't
- 9:26Speaker 5: get too much, we'll have a little bit on the ground.
- 9:28Speaker 5: And look, I have said this before, there is no
- 9:31Speaker 5: and I'm not a snow lover by any stretch of
- 9:32Speaker 5: the imagination, but there was no beautiful building in my
- 9:36Speaker 5: mind than the West Virginia State Capitol at Christmas time.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Wunder's snow on. Yeah, that's quite beautiful.
- 9:40Speaker 1: It's time here.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Adam.
- 9:41Speaker 5: We had a text here. He said, with your and
- 9:43Speaker 5: Adam's involvement in wrestling, what type of wrestler do you
- 9:46Speaker 5: think Bob Thompson would have been.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Oh my, oh my.
- 9:50Speaker 9: Well, you know, Dave, you're a classic lover of wrestling
- 9:53Speaker 9: as I am, and so I mean, I think we
- 9:55Speaker 9: could compare Bob to let's see a mixture of let's
- 9:58Speaker 9: see Bobo Brazil and Arilla Monsoon.
- 10:01Speaker 3: How about that? Yeah, all right, he's a heavyweight. Yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 3: he's a heavyweight. He's a heavyweight, and you don't want
- 10:06Speaker 3: to make him mad. He might seem like a lovable giant. Yeah,
- 10:09Speaker 3: I don't want to get on Bob Thompson. No, Hey, Bob,
- 10:13Speaker 3: it's always a pleasure to have.
- 10:14Speaker 5: You on the show, and we want everybody to come
- 10:18Speaker 5: out to the show's Thursday or Friday night or I
- 10:20Speaker 5: mean go to both. You could absolutely, You'll probably change
- 10:23Speaker 5: it up a little bit between.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Change yeah, yeah, and again.
- 10:29Speaker 5: You can get your tickets in Advanced Mountain Stage dot
- 10:32Speaker 5: Org slash Joy shows will be at eight o'clock on

- 13:28Speaker 3: Hey, good morning, Thanks for having me on.
- 13:30Speaker 5: So you got to follow up Bob Thompson. Any musical
- 13:33Speaker 5: ability for me and whatsoever?
- 13:35Speaker 3: Well, I can sing real good, but I don't do
- 13:37Speaker 3: it for free, Okay, all right, So you're serious, you're
- 13:39Speaker 3: you're a singer. Yeah, I've been known too, okay too
- 13:41Speaker 3: all right now.
- 13:42Speaker 5: So to say, you're not like me or like a
- 13:43Speaker 5: lot of people with these karaoke singers that think they're
- 13:45Speaker 5: good but they're really not.
- 13:46Speaker 3: You're really good. No, I only sing in dive bars. Okay,
- 13:48Speaker 3: it's man after my own art, all right.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Yesterday House Speaker Hanshaw and others had a precedent of
- 13:55Speaker 5: the Capitol talking about their legislative agenda. Want to get
- 13:57Speaker 5: to yours in just a moment, I own business, jobs, etc.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Sounds like speaking your language absolutely.
- 14:05Speaker 14: I mean, I think when it comes to what we
- 14:07Speaker 14: need to do in West Virginia economic competitiveness and jobs.
- 14:10Speaker 14: That's the number one priority I think that lawmakers should have.
- 14:14Speaker 14: And it really does mirror a lot of what we've
- 14:17Speaker 14: talked about in terms of theme and prioritization when it
- 14:21Speaker 14: comes to our legislative agenda and Americans for Prosperity we
- 14:24Speaker 14: released last week. We've been doing this since twenty eighteen,
- 14:27Speaker 14: and we look at it as a roadmap for policymakers
- 14:30Speaker 14: that don't want to tinker around the margins. They want
- 14:32Speaker 14: to be bold. They want to rapidly transform West Virginia
- 14:36Speaker 14: into a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
- 14:38Speaker 14: And so we see that as kind of You know,
- 14:42Speaker 14: when you look at West Virginia from an economic competitive standpoint,
- 14:47Speaker 14: it doesn't do us any good just to catch up
- 14:48Speaker 14: to our other surrounding states because we face so many
- 14:52Speaker 14: as socioeconomic headwinds. So we've got to beat them decidedly
- 14:56Speaker 14: on competitive competitiveness. And so we think we got a
- 15:00Speaker 14: roadmap to get there, and it's exciting to hear lawmakers
- 15:02Speaker 14: are reading from the same handle.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Pathways is prosperity what you're calling it?
- 15:07Speaker 10: Right?
- 15:07Speaker 3: That is right way to prosperity legislative a joke. Yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 3: let's go over some of them.
- 15:11Speaker 14: Sure, absolutely, So I think top top of mind for us.
- 15:14Speaker 14: You know, anytime the state is running a surplus, that
- 15:16Speaker 14: means you're taking too much out of the private sector.
- 15:18Speaker 14: We have one hundred and thirty million plus surplus, and
- 15:22Speaker 14: so what we'd like to see is a continuation of
- 15:24Speaker 14: tax cuts, specifically targeting the personal income tax. We know
- 15:26Speaker 14: that West Virginia passed one of the most hissed work
- 15:31Speaker 14: tax cut, largest in history tax cut a couple of
- 15:34Speaker 14: years back. But since then, states like Kentucky and Ohio
- 15:37Speaker 14: have seen that market signal and began to lower their
- 15:39Speaker 14: rates and so as we continue to compete for jobs
- 15:42Speaker 14: and citizens, we want to keep down the road of
- 15:45Speaker 14: eliminating our state income tax fully.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Okay, why is I mean? And you've been on the
- 15:51Speaker 5: show of the last couple of years, we've talked about this.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Why is that so important to you?
- 15:55Speaker 14: Well, we know that from the data and the research,
- 15:58Speaker 14: all signs point to cutting the income tax is a
- 16:01Speaker 14: large mover when it comes to bringing jobs and people
- 16:04Speaker 14: to the state. We know that we have just broke
- 16:08Speaker 14: even basically, we got out of the demographic winter that
- 16:11Speaker 14: we had faced for several years and not that long ago.
- 16:14Speaker 14: West Virginia was the only state in America where less
- 16:17Speaker 14: than half of our population was working, less than half
- 16:20Speaker 14: in work worse participation. We're now at fifty five percent
- 16:23Speaker 14: workforce participation.
- 16:25Speaker 3: What do you attribute that too?
- 16:27Speaker 14: Pro growth policies that we've passed in the past. I mean,
- 16:30Speaker 14: you know, if you think about you know, whether it
- 16:33Speaker 14: was creating the gold standard for educational freedom in the
- 16:35Speaker 14: country by passing the Hope Scholarship, or enacting the largest
- 16:38Speaker 14: tax cut in state history, of things like having the
- 16:43Speaker 14: best regulatory environment for the creation of independent microgrids so
- 16:47Speaker 14: we can unleash American Energy Abundance lawmaers done tremendous work.
- 16:51Speaker 14: We've cut red tape, we've We've done a lot of
- 16:53Speaker 14: good work. But we can't rest on our laurels. And
- 16:55Speaker 14: that's really our core message in Americans for Prosperity. We
- 16:58Speaker 14: got to keep our foot on the gas when it
- 17:00Speaker 14: comes to beating the other states in the backyard brawl.
- 17:04Speaker 5: And I think sometimes maybe here in Charleston again we're
- 17:07Speaker 5: talking with Jason Huffman from Americans from Prosperity. I don't
- 17:09Speaker 5: know that maybe that we see it as much in Charleston,
- 17:11Speaker 5: but it's a serious issue when you get up in
- 17:13Speaker 5: the Eastern Panhandle with folks crossing that line to go
- 17:16Speaker 5: over to d c or go over to Maryland, or
- 17:18Speaker 5: go over, you know, to Virginia in Pennsylvania. I mean
- 17:21Speaker 5: I sawalking to a friend of mine yesterday who's you know,
- 17:24Speaker 5: for years that they live in West Virginia, but his
- 17:27Speaker 5: father crossed the border and went to Pennsylvania to teach
- 17:32Speaker 5: because he can make more money there. We see it
- 17:34Speaker 5: maybe in the River cities in Ohio as well.
- 17:36Speaker 14: Yeah, And I'm glad you brought up education because that's
- 17:38Speaker 14: another key pillar of what we would like to see
- 17:40Speaker 14: done this legislative session. Obviously, with the Hope Scholarship set
- 17:44Speaker 14: to expand in twenty twenty six to all school aged children,
- 17:46Speaker 14: that's forty five thousand kids who will be become eligible
- 17:49Speaker 14: for the Hope Scholarship. That's huge that that is a
- 17:53Speaker 14: true opportunity for families to be in powered to find
- 17:56Speaker 14: the right educational pathway for them. But in the same token,
- 17:59Speaker 14: we want to look at the government run school system.
- 18:03Speaker 14: So when it comes to you know, we spend over
- 18:06Speaker 14: four billion dollars annually on K through twelve education in
- 18:08Speaker 14: this state, we think that we spend enough on public
- 18:12Speaker 14: education as it is. We would like to see it
- 18:14Speaker 14: right sizing of public education system and specifically for this reason,
- 18:18Speaker 14: we've continued to see student population decline. Oh, there's been
- 18:23Speaker 14: a lot of scapegoating of the Hope Scholarship as to
- 18:26Speaker 14: that being the catalyst for it, but we've seen enrollment
- 18:29Speaker 14: declining for decades and this is a problem that is
- 18:31Speaker 14: not unique to West Virginia because birth rates across the
- 18:33Speaker 14: country are declining. Instead, what we would like to see
- 18:38Speaker 14: as student enrollment declines is not what the trend has
- 18:43Speaker 14: been traditionally, which is an increase in spending on education
- 18:46Speaker 14: and an increase specifically in administration administrative bloat. We think
- 18:51Speaker 14: we need to see some right sizing there, and specifically
- 18:53Speaker 14: we want to see those dollars that are saved as
- 18:56Speaker 14: a result of that go back to classroom instruction and
- 18:59Speaker 14: teacher pay well.
- 19:00Speaker 3: And that's what it was gonna bring me to my
- 19:01Speaker 3: next point.
- 19:01Speaker 5: One of the things to Speaker Handshaw Jason talked about
- 19:04Speaker 5: yesterday was was with teacher and service personnel pay raise
- 19:08Speaker 5: They there are that they've got a number out there
- 19:10Speaker 5: that they're looking at that that that was definitely part
- 19:13Speaker 5: of it. And where would you folks be on that.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Well, from our perspective, that's great.
- 19:16Speaker 14: I think we need to be competitive when it comes
- 19:18Speaker 14: to how much we're we're paying our educators. They do
- 19:20Speaker 14: hard work, but we don't want to see any more
- 19:24Speaker 14: money go into the government run school system. It's four
- 19:26Speaker 14: billion dollars more than four billion dollars already, and so
- 19:30Speaker 14: we need government to live with its means, even when
- 19:32Speaker 14: it comes to the government run school system. And so
- 19:35Speaker 14: sure we should be paying teachers more, but that's got
- 19:39Speaker 14: to come at the expense of right sizing. What is
- 19:42Speaker 14: essentially out of control spend on K through twelve education.
- 19:45Speaker 5: But there would be those I'm a push I'm not
- 19:47Speaker 5: gonna push back. I'm just gonna play Devil's advocate a
- 19:49Speaker 5: little bit because I think you and I are on
- 19:50Speaker 5: the same page in this. But there would be those
- 19:52Speaker 5: that would say, look, you know, our test scores are
- 19:55Speaker 5: although we have improved in certain areas our test stores,
- 19:58Speaker 5: test scores still when you compare to other states, aren't
- 20:01Speaker 5: what they should be, and we're just not getting enough
- 20:04Speaker 5: funding for teachers to do what they need to do
- 20:06Speaker 5: in the classroom. To that, you would say, hogwash, Okay, look,
- 20:09Speaker 5: thanks for having If you.
- 20:10Speaker 14: Look at the states that spend the most on per
- 20:12Speaker 14: pupil education, New York is the top of the list, right,
- 20:16Speaker 14: their educational outcomes aren't any better, and so we have
- 20:19Speaker 14: is a systemic problem anytime. That and the reason you
- 20:22Speaker 14: see the big push across the country that really started
- 20:25Speaker 14: in West Virginia but now has gone to twelve other states.
- 20:27Speaker 14: Even more than that, you can't have a one size
- 20:30Speaker 14: fits all approach to education. Every kid is different. Any
- 20:32Speaker 14: parent will tell you that.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you talk to a parent that's got
- 20:35Speaker 5: three kids, I'll tell you there's three different personalities there.
- 20:37Speaker 14: Absolutely, And so for the crowd out there, the special
- 20:40Speaker 14: interests that look at the education system like a jobs
- 20:42Speaker 14: program for adults instead of a way to educate our kids,
- 20:45Speaker 14: I would say that enough's enough. We spend enough on
- 20:47Speaker 14: government run education. It's time to tighten our belt and
- 20:49Speaker 14: right size that system, which is why we're calling for
- 20:52Speaker 14: a moratorium to be instituted on increases in government run
- 20:56Speaker 14: school spending.
- 20:58Speaker 3: What are the that's your projection for how that's going
- 21:01Speaker 3: to go? Do you think you got a lot of
- 21:02Speaker 3: support for that?
- 21:04Speaker 8: Well?
- 21:04Speaker 14: I think that when it comes to education, spending traditionally
- 21:07Speaker 14: has gone up. But somebody's got to. Somebody's got to,
- 21:09Speaker 14: you know, be the one to John the Baptist this
- 21:12Speaker 14: thing and get out there and say we have a
- 21:13Speaker 14: problem here. The math doesn't math. We have six hundred
- 21:16Speaker 14: and twenty nine school buildings in this state for a
- 21:18Speaker 14: population of less than two hundred and forty thousand kids.
- 21:21Speaker 14: That math doesn't math well.
- 21:23Speaker 5: And look, we've talked about it on this show and
- 21:25Speaker 5: on other shows as well. In the state, as we
- 21:27Speaker 5: speak right now, I think the state school board was
- 21:28Speaker 5: meeting at nine o'clock this morning. And one of the
- 21:30Speaker 5: things that they're going to be looking at is they're
- 21:32Speaker 5: going to be talking about closing schools in certain counties
- 21:35Speaker 5: or a few counties that were listed. We just came
- 21:37Speaker 5: off a closure in Rome County. I know, in my
- 21:39Speaker 5: native land there was a closure of a school. This
- 21:41Speaker 5: was more of a structural issue though. Down in Logan County.
- 21:45Speaker 5: We everybody wants that school Jason in their community. I mean,
- 21:49Speaker 5: everybody wants those smaller schools. The school is the hub
- 21:52Speaker 5: of everything. That's where your scouts meet, that's where Little
- 21:54Speaker 5: League registrations go on.
- 21:56Speaker 3: So I mean, it's it's.
- 21:57Speaker 5: The hub, that's the hub of everything. However, it's a
- 22:00Speaker 5: model in my opinion, that just doesn't work anymore, having
- 22:04Speaker 5: these schools in every community with a declining population. If
- 22:08Speaker 5: our I mean, look over in the Eastern Panandle they're
- 22:10Speaker 5: going to build a new high school. Okay, that's a
- 22:12Speaker 5: different but the rest of the state is not Western
- 22:15Speaker 5: is not the Eastern Panandal.
- 22:16Speaker 14: Well, I mean, maybe those smaller community schools could work
- 22:19Speaker 14: out better if we didn't have this gargantuan administrative cost
- 22:22Speaker 14: associated with K through twelve education. And that starts in Charleston,
- 22:25Speaker 14: but goes out to the county level as well, And
- 22:28Speaker 14: I think to some extent, when you look at education
- 22:31Speaker 14: as a whole, we're moving in the right direction. But
- 22:34Speaker 14: you know, we need to give localities, We need to
- 22:37Speaker 14: give teachers and schools specifically a cleaner slate when it
- 22:41Speaker 14: comes to their regulatory environment. There is so much red
- 22:44Speaker 14: tape and nonsense from Charleston that school teachers face, and
- 22:48Speaker 14: they're not able to really individualize education around each kids.
- 22:51Speaker 14: So we would like to see a comprehensive deregulation of
- 22:54Speaker 14: the government run school system so that they can compete
- 22:57Speaker 14: with some of these school choice options that exist now.
- 22:59Speaker 3: I mean some of the examples in your opinion and
- 23:01Speaker 3: your studies of some of some of the red tape
- 23:05Speaker 3: that need to be eliminated. For as far as teachers go.
- 23:07Speaker 14: You can think of seat time requirements, curriculum requirements, just
- 23:11Speaker 14: an accumulation if you will, of red tape over the decades.
- 23:15Speaker 14: But if it was up to me, we'd go into
- 23:16Speaker 14: Chapter eighteen and eighteen A and just hit delete on
- 23:18Speaker 14: anything that doesn't have a federal matching dollar. That's probably
- 23:22Speaker 14: the more I won't say extreme, but it's the more
- 23:27Speaker 14: old approach. I don't necessarily know that we get there,
- 23:30Speaker 14: but we're working with lawmakers to think through some of
- 23:32Speaker 14: the logistics and economics of this situation. And there's been
- 23:38Speaker 14: a lot of interest, frankly from state lawmakers in pursuing
- 23:42Speaker 14: some deregulation in the government run the school system.
- 23:45Speaker 5: With the And I know that Americans for Prosperity is
- 23:48Speaker 5: a nonpartisan organization, but with the current makeup of the legislature,
- 23:54Speaker 5: you know, West Virginia is a red state. Went Republican
- 23:57Speaker 5: in twenty fourteen and no sign it's going to go
- 23:58Speaker 5: back anytime anytime soon.
- 24:03Speaker 3: There seems to be within the Republican Party.
- 24:05Speaker 5: And we talked about this a little bit on the
- 24:06Speaker 5: show yesterday, there seems to be, you know, and look,
- 24:08Speaker 5: this happened with the Democrats when they control for eighty
- 24:10Speaker 5: three years too. There are divisions are so there are
- 24:13Speaker 5: those that are are far right and those that are
- 24:15Speaker 5: just kind of center right, and so on and so forth.
- 24:18Speaker 3: No different than when the Democrats were in charge.
- 24:22Speaker 5: How is your group able to work with all parties involved?
- 24:27Speaker 14: Well, I think it's because we're consistent on our principles.
- 24:30Speaker 14: People know where we're coming from our philosophy is really simple.
- 24:34Speaker 14: The way to achieve more prosperity is to unleash more
- 24:38Speaker 14: freedom and opportunity, and so you do that by making
- 24:42Speaker 14: a state more competitive economically, cutting taxes, cutting red tape.
- 24:45Speaker 14: You know, one of the things that we saw this
- 24:47Speaker 14: week that I thought very was very interesting some numbers
- 24:52Speaker 14: on the sort of nexus between cutting red tape, cutting
- 24:56Speaker 14: rules and rags that exist that that, in my opinion,
- 24:59Speaker 14: many of them are necessary, and the growth in our
- 25:03Speaker 14: gross domestic product. If you would go in and cut
- 25:06Speaker 14: say ten percent of the rules and rags on the books,
- 25:08Speaker 14: that would be six billion dollars in gross domestic product growth,
- 25:13Speaker 14: And for an economy that only has eighty billion dollars
- 25:16Speaker 14: of GDP right now, that would be huge. So extrapolate
- 25:19Speaker 14: that out over you know, ten twenty thirty forty. We
- 25:22Speaker 14: have seen some estimates that say the low hanging fruit
- 25:24Speaker 14: is somewhere between thirty and forty percent of rags that
- 25:26Speaker 14: are on the books could be cut. That would be
- 25:29Speaker 14: an eighth of our economy. So we're excited about the
- 25:32Speaker 14: prospect of that. But you know, when you take a
- 25:34Speaker 14: data driven approach to things and you look at things
- 25:36Speaker 14: from a principal first standpoint that that's how we're able
- 25:40Speaker 14: to really work with folks even across the island some cases.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Talking with Jason Huffman from Americans for Prosperity of Dave
- 25:46Speaker 5: Allen Show and five any line is broadche parted by
- 25:48Speaker 5: Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing comprehensive management plans to
- 25:52Speaker 5: outline strategies for controlling and minimizing as best. It's exposure
- 25:55Speaker 5: perfect for commercial property owners and managers. Check out Pinnacle
- 25:58Speaker 5: Corp dot net because what you don't know can hurt you.
- 26:01Speaker 5: We did have a text here, and I'm going to
- 26:02Speaker 5: read this to you and get your feedback on it.
- 26:04Speaker 5: So how much of that funding all these other states
- 26:07Speaker 5: get for their schools actually goes towards the education of
- 26:10Speaker 5: their children instead of the indoctrination of them and turning
- 26:12Speaker 5: them into a little activist. If you notice, their test
- 26:14Speaker 5: scores really do suck.
- 26:16Speaker 3: So it's a text.
- 26:17Speaker 14: Well, that's an interesting question. I don't necessarily have statistics
- 26:20Speaker 14: on the other states, although I will say that when
- 26:23Speaker 14: it comes to the organized labor unions within our government
- 26:26Speaker 14: run school system across the board across America. You know,
- 26:29Speaker 14: American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association. You have
- 26:33Speaker 14: but to read their national platforms to understand the level
- 26:37Speaker 14: of kind of Marxist philosophy that is in there. And
- 26:40Speaker 14: I say that pretty bluntly, but I mean it's public information.
- 26:43Speaker 14: You can get a hold of it in fact check
- 26:44Speaker 14: me if you don't like what I said. We want
- 26:47Speaker 14: to get away from that. We want to get to
- 26:49Speaker 14: a point where parents are empowered. We have one of
- 26:52Speaker 14: the best open enrollment laws in the country, so you
- 26:54Speaker 14: can put your child in any public school you want.
- 26:57Speaker 14: It's not the case that you're zoned your government assigned
- 27:02Speaker 14: zip code school. This is where you have to go anymore.
- 27:05Speaker 14: So we've put the accountability into the hands of parents,
- 27:07Speaker 14: so they can go and find that education in the
- 27:10Speaker 14: government run school setting, or they could go to the
- 27:12Speaker 14: educational freedom route. So really this is about not having
- 27:16Speaker 14: a captive audience in education, not having a one size
- 27:19Speaker 14: fits all approach, but really empowering parents to define the
- 27:22Speaker 14: right education for their kid.
- 27:23Speaker 5: You know, one of the things that I don't hear
- 27:27Speaker 5: in what you've gone over today, and I didn't hear
- 27:29Speaker 5: speaker Handshaw speaking about yesterday. I had Brian Dayton from
- 27:33Speaker 5: the Chamber of Commerce on the show yesterday and he
- 27:34Speaker 5: kind of followed up put you know, talking about with
- 27:36Speaker 5: Speaker Hanshaw said, one of the things that I did
- 27:38Speaker 5: not hear is what would be the quote unquote the
- 27:41Speaker 5: social issues speaker Handshaw didn't speak about it. When Brian
- 27:45Speaker 5: Dayton was on the show yesterday, he didn't talk about it.
- 27:46Speaker 3: You and I know you've got a lot.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Of papers in front of there, so we haven't got
- 27:50Speaker 5: to everything, but you haven't talked about.
- 27:51Speaker 3: It to me.
- 27:53Speaker 5: This is me speaking. That's a good thing. I think
- 27:56Speaker 5: we need to stay out of it, and that's that's
- 27:57Speaker 5: just my opinion. You don't have to agree.
- 27:59Speaker 14: Well, what I would say is this, You're in an
- 28:01Speaker 14: environment right now that West Virginia's read and becoming redder,
- 28:06Speaker 14: and primary elections are what drive electoral results. The general
- 28:10Speaker 14: election doesn't matter a whole lot in West Virginia, and
- 28:13Speaker 14: so I think for a lot of Wallmakers, they're responding
- 28:17Speaker 14: to that Republican base. They're responding to those primary voters
- 28:20Speaker 14: hopes and aspirations for what.
- 28:22Speaker 3: They will do.
- 28:23Speaker 14: And quite frankly, I don't necessarily think, you know, you
- 28:26Speaker 14: hear a lot from the establishment business community if you will.
- 28:31Speaker 14: They decry the work that folks are doing in the
- 28:35Speaker 14: legislature on quote unquote cultural issues. We don't work on
- 28:39Speaker 14: those because there's enough folks that are already focused on that.
- 28:42Speaker 14: But I don't think that you can't have a situation
- 28:45Speaker 14: where you can do both as a lawmaker. You know,
- 28:47Speaker 14: say for every ten economic bills you have, you have
- 28:50Speaker 14: three or four social issue bills. Sixty days session is
- 28:54Speaker 14: a short timeframe, but I think that if we could
- 28:56Speaker 14: get lawmakers to get on the same page, it could
- 28:59Speaker 14: work a lot more efficiently from a time management standpoint.
- 29:03Speaker 14: So I kind of I think it's a bogus notion
- 29:06Speaker 14: that you can't go and do both. I frankly think
- 29:08Speaker 14: that individuals who are decrying lawmakers working on social issues
- 29:13Speaker 14: really don't understand the electorate that they're being held accountable by.
- 29:16Speaker 5: You talk about the primary election, though, I mean, the
- 29:18Speaker 5: Republican Party in West Virginia basically said to a great
- 29:21Speaker 5: number of people independence that we don't want your vote
- 29:24Speaker 5: by closing their primary.
- 29:26Speaker 14: They did do that, and I think that's going to
- 29:27Speaker 14: obviously change the makeup of this election. I think, you know,
- 29:31Speaker 14: there's gonna be a lot of people that go to
- 29:33Speaker 14: the polls on election day in May and say I'd
- 29:36Speaker 14: like a Republican ballot please, and they're not gonna be
- 29:37Speaker 14: able to get that. So hopefully there'll be a lot
- 29:40Speaker 14: of educating of the public done by the Republican Party
- 29:43Speaker 14: as they put that into their bile alls and platform,
- 29:47Speaker 14: what have you.
- 29:48Speaker 3: But in the long run, I don't necessarily.
- 29:51Speaker 14: Know that it's going to have that much of an
- 29:53Speaker 14: impact in the out year elections where people have had
- 29:55Speaker 14: time to switch parties. You know, the Democrat Party had
- 29:58Speaker 14: their primary closed for sometime, and I think when they
- 30:01Speaker 14: were in the majority for that eighty three years that
- 30:03Speaker 14: they ruled the state with an iron fist. I think
- 30:05Speaker 14: you saw a lot of folks who were conservative that
- 30:07Speaker 14: were probably registered Democrat so that they could vote in
- 30:10Speaker 14: the primaries that matter. So I think you'll see some
- 30:13Speaker 14: sort of evolution of what we've seen in the past.
- 30:15Speaker 5: All Right, I'm gonna give you I'm putting the crown
- 30:18Speaker 5: on your head, okay, and I'm saying you are over
- 30:21Speaker 5: the legislature.
- 30:22Speaker 3: You can get any one seene.
- 30:24Speaker 5: I know you've gone over a lot of things, but
- 30:26Speaker 5: one single thing that needs to be done.
- 30:30Speaker 14: Well, I hear people don't like the idea of kings.
- 30:33Speaker 14: I tend to be one of those people as well.
- 30:35Speaker 5: So this is a virtual world where now this is
- 30:38Speaker 5: a make believe world. Here's what's the number one thing.
- 30:41Speaker 14: Well, in Huffman's VR legislature, we'd eliminate the personal win
- 30:44Speaker 14: income tax as quickly as possible, but not quicker. And
- 30:46Speaker 14: when I say that, I mean I want us to
- 30:48Speaker 14: be physically responsible. But we know that when you cut
- 30:51Speaker 14: the income tax, people come to your state. It creates jobs.
- 30:54Speaker 14: You can't have a situation where you have a government
- 30:56Speaker 14: surplus after the historic tax cut if you didn't get growth.
- 31:01Speaker 14: So we're growing and we'd like to see that growth
- 31:04Speaker 14: continue because it's what West Virginians deserve. They deserve jobs
- 31:07Speaker 14: and the opportunity to have more money in their pocket

- 34:26Speaker 3: Let me knock out a couple of texts here.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Text says Trump said he's all about making America affordable again.
- 34:33Speaker 5: Sadly and predictably, his followers won't realize his policies are
- 34:37Speaker 5: the cause of the economic woes, and they will back
- 34:39Speaker 5: him up with a sheep sounding chorus of MAMAA. Dex says,
- 34:44Speaker 5: Americans for prosperity to be nonpartisan is the funniest thing
- 34:48Speaker 5: I have heard today.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Well, I'm glad I could put a smile on your face.
- 34:50Speaker 5: Texture Tex says, I believe the Texter was referring to
- 34:53Speaker 5: the indoctrination centers of Turning Point USA creating conservative activists
- 34:58Speaker 5: in our schools s. As a tankster, texas day, we
- 35:03Speaker 5: need to hold lawmakers accountable this session. We want lower
- 35:05Speaker 5: prices on food utilities and a change and a public
- 35:08Speaker 5: service commission. We want to say who's on that board.
- 35:12Speaker 5: It's failing the people.
- 35:13Speaker 3: As a tankster, Tex says, we don't have a problem
- 35:16Speaker 3: opening charter schools, but close public schools. Let's put a
- 35:18Speaker 3: stop to that. Tex says we need to.
- 35:21Speaker 5: Go back to the days when we brought Toyota the
- 35:24Speaker 5: you know truck plant, spark plug plant, plane plant, Procter
- 35:28Speaker 5: and gamble plant. Not seeing this with Republicans in charge
- 35:31Speaker 5: and social issues not jobs. Well I would push back
- 35:33Speaker 5: on that a little bit. I mean, all you got
- 35:35Speaker 5: to do is take that short drive and see new core.
- 35:38Speaker 5: Texays just checked on population growth in West Virginia. Both
- 35:42Speaker 5: stayed in federal state. West Virginia is not growing in population.
- 35:45Speaker 5: There are areas of West Virginia that are growing.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Tex says.
- 35:51Speaker 5: Okay, Florida state out of it, Texas state out of it,
- 35:53Speaker 5: Ohio state out of it. And now look, they all
- 35:56Speaker 5: have overwhelming Muslim takeovers in their districts, so we can't
- 35:59Speaker 5: stay out of it. When it comes to social issues
- 36:02Speaker 5: as a texture, Well, this guy is going to stay
- 36:03Speaker 5: out of social issues altogether. Shane and Zanaga from the
- 36:06Speaker 5: City of South Charles and ain't doing my.
- 36:08Speaker 17: Friend good good, Thanks for having me today.
- 36:09Speaker 5: Anytime you want to come in, you want to answer
- 36:11Speaker 5: any of the text, You're more than welcomes.
- 36:15Speaker 3: That's the rest parts. I'll stay silent. That's all right.
- 36:19Speaker 5: Let's talk about Christmas in South Charles and get some
- 36:21Speaker 5: things going on at the market. I understand farmers market
- 36:24Speaker 5: and some other things a break it down for you.
- 36:26Speaker 17: Coming up this Friday, we have our Holiday Jolly Market
- 36:29Speaker 17: with Josh Pantry, so he'll be there from six pm
- 36:31Speaker 17: to eight pm weather from meeting. Of course, we know
- 36:34Speaker 17: we got some snow coming possibly on Fridays, we'll keep
- 36:36Speaker 17: a close eye on that. And then Saturday we have
- 36:38Speaker 17: our Christmas Market Festival. We'll have a petting zoo, holiday
- 36:42Speaker 17: workshops and of course shopping, food vendors and things like
- 36:45Speaker 17: that going on. So come to this weekend to the market,
- 36:48Speaker 17: and we also want to encourage folks to visit our
- 36:51Speaker 17: lights at the Little Creek Park six pm at nine
- 36:54Speaker 17: pm through Christmas Eve.
- 36:57Speaker 5: And then this past week you had a pretty good
- 36:59Speaker 5: looking Christmas parade. I'm normally there, but we had another
- 37:02Speaker 5: station event I had to attend. Most of our stations
- 37:04Speaker 5: were there, but it was a great event.
- 37:05Speaker 17: It was a really great turn. I think we had
- 37:06Speaker 17: about one hundred entries, so it was a pretty big parade,
- 37:10Speaker 17: but it turned out great.
- 37:12Speaker 5: Talking about some of the other things going on in
- 37:14Speaker 5: South Charleston, I mean we just keep seeing, you know,
- 37:16Speaker 5: I mean, not necessarily related to Christmas. Man, we just
- 37:19Speaker 5: keep seeing every day that there's something new popping up
- 37:21Speaker 5: in South Charleston. I think the mayor has done a
- 37:23Speaker 5: great job on that, and you folks in the marketing
- 37:25Speaker 5: that have as well talk about some of.
- 37:26Speaker 17: The new Yes, it's definitely growing. We just actually opened
- 37:28Speaker 17: up a new business yesterday called Antie's Pearl's Honey Pot
- 37:32Speaker 17: at four fifteenth Central Avenue. And I believe the mayors
- 37:36Speaker 17: he's averaging about two businesses a month right now that
- 37:39Speaker 17: are opening in South Trost and so it's definitely growing.
- 37:43Speaker 17: And as far as the new shopping center, if you
- 37:45Speaker 17: drive by there right now, you'll see Kroger. They basically
- 37:48Speaker 17: how they're building up and prey construction. You'll see they're
- 37:52Speaker 17: putting some structures out that there will house about seven
- 37:54Speaker 17: businesses like Sketchers, Harey mcgoo's and Nothing Bunt Cakes, and
- 37:59Speaker 17: they'll be four others as well.
- 38:01Speaker 5: And I know we just had Small Business Saturday a
- 38:03Speaker 5: couple of weeks ago, and I think I had you
- 38:04Speaker 5: on to talk about that. But talk about some of
- 38:06Speaker 5: the small but you don't not necessarily need to, you know,
- 38:08Speaker 5: give them a plug as far as the business is good,
- 38:10Speaker 5: but talk about the number of businesses that you have.
- 38:12Speaker 3: There's small businesses in South Charlestown.
- 38:13Speaker 17: Yeah, so, I mean I think most of ours are
- 38:15Speaker 17: pretty much small businesses and kind of like what I,
- 38:18Speaker 17: you know, tell people is it's very important to support
- 38:22Speaker 17: them because I, you know, I think that thriving small
- 38:25Speaker 17: businesses create thriving communities. So it's always good to get
- 38:29Speaker 17: out and support local.
- 38:31Speaker 5: UK to Sean Zonig again from the city of Charleston,
- 38:33Speaker 5: it's nine forty six for Dave Allen Show and five

- 38:58Speaker 3: and get one. You can go over to Dirty Birds
- 39:01Speaker 3: to Light to Night.
- 39:04Speaker 5: There's a lot of I want to go back to
- 39:05Speaker 5: your your your smaller park that you have their little
- 39:09Speaker 5: little park, little creek talking about the lights there again.
- 39:13Speaker 17: Yeah, it's just our second annual lights at Little Creek Park,
- 39:15Speaker 17: so we actually added more lights this year and we're
- 39:18Speaker 17: gonna add additional lights for years to come. But it's
- 39:23Speaker 17: a we f had a pretty great turnout so far.
- 39:26Speaker 17: I get the numbers that come in weekly. I think
- 39:29Speaker 17: we've had about three or four hundred folks already go
- 39:31Speaker 17: through already. So come out and visit those through Christmas
- 39:36Speaker 17: Eve from six pm to nine pm.
- 39:38Speaker 5: All right, And of course you guys do a great
- 39:40Speaker 5: job in your social media, so just follow the City
- 39:42Speaker 5: of South Charleston. John's always a pleasure to have you
- 39:43Speaker 5: on the show. Good luck with everything this weekend, and
- 39:46Speaker 5: if something happens you do have to postpone what you're
- 39:48Speaker 5: doing Friday night, just let us know and we'll get
- 39:50Speaker 5: in on the air for we hopefully that's not the case.
- 39:51Speaker 5: A little snow, you got to have a little snow around,
- 39:53Speaker 5: but you don't want to put people we don't we
- 39:54Speaker 5: don't want we had earlier this week. We know that
- 39:57Speaker 5: or what the Eastern Mountains are gonna get, which isn't
- 39:59Speaker 5: all out blizz what they're going to be getting, We're
- 40:01Speaker 5: not getting that here.
- 40:02Speaker 3: All right, Sean. Always pleasure having the show man.
- 40:04Speaker 5: Thanks a lot, thank you, all right, A nine forty seven.
- 40:07Speaker 5: We will take a break, kind of continuing with the
- 40:09Speaker 5: Christmas theme. We're going to go to Camp Virgil Tate

- 43:02Speaker 3: And welcome to the show.
- 43:04Speaker 10: Good morning.
- 43:05Speaker 3: How long has this been going on?
- 43:07Speaker 10: This is our twelfth year, all right.
- 43:09Speaker 3: So tell us all about it.
- 43:10Speaker 5: For people that don't know about Breakfast with Santa, it
- 43:11Speaker 5: can't Virgil tate well.
- 43:13Speaker 10: For twelve years now, we've been hosting a breakfast with Sanna.
- 43:17Speaker 10: We started out with pancakes and sausage pictures with Santa
- 43:21Speaker 10: as well as pony rids. For twelve years, that's all
- 43:25Speaker 10: been five dollars each. We have never raised our prices.
- 43:29Speaker 3: You can't beat that. That's a pretty good price.
- 43:33Speaker 10: That is a pretty good bargain. We'd like it to
- 43:35Speaker 10: be a community event. We like it to be affordable
- 43:37Speaker 10: for families if they can come out enjoy the facility,
- 43:40Speaker 10: see Santa. This year, we're thrilled we're adding a artisan's show,
- 43:46Speaker 10: so we're going to have vendors that are going to
- 43:47Speaker 10: be selling homemade West Virginia products. They'll be there from
- 43:51Speaker 10: nine to three. Everything will be homemade by independent vendors,
- 43:56Speaker 10: and then our Breakfast with Sanna is nine to noon.
- 44:01Speaker 5: How many kids or family members give me a good
- 44:04Speaker 5: ballpark figure of how many go through this thing every year?
- 44:07Speaker 10: We serve at least three hundred breakfasts every year, right,
- 44:11Speaker 10: And we had a really nice turnout.
- 44:13Speaker 5: All right, And of course none of this would be
- 44:15Speaker 5: possible because without volunteers, I know, you got a lot
- 44:17Speaker 5: of folks from the business community and from other places
- 44:20Speaker 5: that help out with this.
- 44:21Speaker 10: Absolutely calls meet and Hurricane is a great four H
- 44:26Speaker 10: supporter of Camp Virgils Hate. They always donate our sausages.
- 44:31Speaker 10: We usually get our pancake mixed donated. This year is
- 44:33Speaker 10: coming from Cracker Barrel. We have our four H volunteers
- 44:38Speaker 10: in Canall County helped come out and man the event
- 44:43Speaker 10: and serve the pancakes and clean up. And Southern District
- 44:47Speaker 10: Horse Camp all of their volunteers come out bring the
- 44:50Speaker 10: ponies so that the kids can have a pony ride.
- 44:53Speaker 5: It's all good stuff. It's all good stuff. And again
- 44:56Speaker 5: it's Saturday morning. What time does it start again?
- 44:57Speaker 10: Remind me it starts at nine a m.
- 45:01Speaker 5: What's what seems to be the big hit every year?
- 45:03Speaker 5: I mean, I mean anytime you got pony rides. I mean,
- 45:05Speaker 5: for me, the sausage and pancakes will be the big
- 45:07Speaker 5: hit if I you know, even even as a kid.
- 45:09Speaker 5: Uh but I but I will say this that the
- 45:12Speaker 5: pony rides are always a big deal. What are some
- 45:14Speaker 5: of the other big things that people put smiles on
- 45:17Speaker 5: youngun's faces.
- 45:19Speaker 10: Oh, well, you know, of course, it's always the big
- 45:21Speaker 10: man in the red suit Santa Clause. He almost always
- 45:24Speaker 10: brings Missus Claws with him, so you get to meet
- 45:27Speaker 10: both of them. But we also have free activities for
- 45:30Speaker 10: the kids this year, so they can come out and
- 45:33Speaker 10: make a gift for a family member or themselves. They
- 45:35Speaker 10: can decorate a gift bag that is free of charge.
- 45:39Speaker 10: So it's something else that you can do that will bake, uh,
- 45:44Speaker 10: break your bank and let your kids do an activity
- 45:47Speaker 10: out there, you know, while you do some shopping. And
- 45:50Speaker 10: it's been a great event.
- 45:52Speaker 3: All right.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Remind people where they can get more information. You got
- 45:56Speaker 5: social media? Got a website?
- 45:57Speaker 3: Is our place out there where people can get more information?
- 46:00Speaker 10: Absolutely can't. Virgil Tate has a very active Facebook. We
- 46:04Speaker 10: post everything on there. You'll see daily posts reminding you
- 46:07Speaker 10: of where in the location, can't. Virgil Tait is located
- 46:11Speaker 10: between Cross Lanes and Cystinville. Everybody thinks it's way out there,
- 46:15Speaker 10: but it's about barely ten minutes from Cross Lanes, so
- 46:19Speaker 10: it's not a long drive and it's very pretty drive.
- 46:21Speaker 3: All right, Kerry, appreciate you being here. Good luck with
- 46:24Speaker 3: everything this weekend. We'll talk soon.
- 46:25Speaker 10: Thanks a lot, all right, thank you so much.
- 46:28Speaker 5: It's a nine fifty four of a Dave Allan Show
- 46:30Speaker 5: one five ety Live, broad to you in part by
- 46:31Speaker 5: Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. If you're injured,
- 46:34Speaker 5: visit for the People dot Com. Coming up on this
- 46:36Speaker 5: show tomorrow, we're going to talk West Virginia Symphony and
- 46:39Speaker 5: another Christmas event, this one at the Albun Theater in St.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Albans.
- 46:42Speaker 5: Also, State treashler Larry Pack is going to stop by
- 46:44Speaker 5: the show tomorrow as well. Coming up later today, Metro
- 46:47Speaker 5: News Midday with thirteen News and Tonight Live anchor a
- 46:49Speaker 5: Mande Baron and Me powered by Selango Law. Of course,
- 46:51Speaker 5: we're going to get more reaction from the legislative agenda
- 46:55Speaker 5: put forth you yesterday by Speaker Hanshaw. Delegate Sean Hornbuckle
- 46:59Speaker 5: is going to us on the show today. It's Wednesday,
- 47:01Speaker 5: which means we introduce you to another wonderful West Virginian.
- 47:05Speaker 3: Jeff Jenkins will have the news. TJ.
- 47:07Speaker 5: Meadows will stop buy and of course open line West Virginia.
- 47:09Speaker 5: Metro News Midday with thirteen News and Tonight Live anchor
- 47:12Speaker 5: Manda Baron and Me. Coming up at noon today, powered
- 47:14Speaker 5: by Selango Law. I do want to mention I said earlier.
- 47:17Speaker 5: I was talking earlier about the Charleston Christmas Parade. If
- 47:20Speaker 5: you can't make it to downtown Charleston tomorrow night, we
- 47:23Speaker 5: are going to have live coverage on the radio. Join
- 47:27Speaker 5: Chris Lawrence, Steve Bishop, and Lisa Odi for the call
- 47:31Speaker 5: tomorrow night of the Christmas Parade live on the radio
- 47:33Speaker 5: WCHS network.
- 47:34Speaker 3: We will start at seven o'clock.
- 47:37Speaker 5: Tex says a new course Steele was all because of
- 47:41Speaker 5: the money Biden brought to the state with infrastructure bills
- 47:44Speaker 5: to give millions and tax breaks to new Core to
- 47:47Speaker 5: build here. Well, partially true, partially true because their talks
- 47:51Speaker 5: were already happening with New Core before that. Tex says,
- 47:56Speaker 5: I am calling on all independent voters to make changes
- 47:59Speaker 5: in our state law, all makers this election year. It's
- 48:01Speaker 5: getting worse in our state. The problem, appreciate the text.
- 48:04Speaker 5: The problem is is that if you're an independent voter,
- 48:08Speaker 5: you can't vote for any Republicans. Now, you can vote
- 48:10Speaker 5: for Democrats if you want, but the Republican Party pretty
- 48:14Speaker 5: much made that well known that they did not want
- 48:16Speaker 5: independent voters voting in their primary. So if you're an
- 48:19Speaker 5: independent voter, when you go to the polls for that
- 48:23Speaker 5: primary election. And I liked what Jason Huffman was talking
- 48:25Speaker 5: about earlier about educating people. We've been talking about this
- 48:28Speaker 5: for some time now. Just know, if you're an independent
- 48:32Speaker 5: voter and you go in the past, you've always gone
- 48:35Speaker 5: to your polling place on primary day or election day
- 48:38Speaker 5: or early voting, and you said, I am an independent,
- 48:40Speaker 5: but I want a Democrat ballot, or I want a
- 48:42Speaker 5: Republican ballot. You can no longer do that for a
- 48:45Speaker 5: Republican ballot. You do it for the Democrats, but not
- 48:48Speaker 5: for Republicans. So just know that it's good. And if
- 48:52Speaker 5: this Texture says that they want to make changes and
- 48:54Speaker 5: if they want to vote for Republicans. Maybe Texture was
- 48:57Speaker 5: referring to just voting for Democrats.
- 48:58Speaker 3: I don't know. They can still do that.
- 48:59Speaker 5: But you're a Republican or if you're an independent, I
- 49:02Speaker 5: should say, your choices are going to be sparse on
- 49:05Speaker 5: election day. Maybe a school board been on what county
- 49:07Speaker 5: you're in school board or or something like that, a
- 49:09Speaker 5: nonpartisan race, but you ain't going to be voting for
- 49:12Speaker 5: a House of Delegates or anything like that if you
- 49:14Speaker 5: ask for because you're not going to get a Republican ballot.
- 49:16Speaker 3: DJ Meadows is here. How you doing, my friend Someboddy.
- 49:20Speaker 3: I see that you had Joe Manchin on the show.
- 49:21Speaker 5: Yeah, Joe Manchwell not today, tomorrow, Okay, okay, I've just
- 49:24Speaker 5: looked at it during the break there. So Senator Mansion,
- 49:26Speaker 5: former Senator man I guess he's always a senator, and
- 49:28Speaker 5: we referred to him. The proper thing is to always
- 49:30Speaker 5: refer to somebody by their title. So or do you
- 49:32Speaker 5: refer to him as the former governor or the former
- 49:34Speaker 5: secretary of state or former legislator?
- 49:36Speaker 7: I mean, he did it all. I think Joe led
- 49:38Speaker 7: the band.
- 49:38Speaker 3: He's going to tell you. He's going to tell you
- 49:41Speaker 3: call me Joe. That's what he normally does, That's what
- 49:42Speaker 3: he's always sid But Joe bnschell will be on the
- 49:44Speaker 3: show Tomorrow's what's on Joe's mind? Well, you know, there's
- 49:48Speaker 3: always something on that he's not always And I think
- 49:52Speaker 3: what I'll say is this, I don't want to give
- 49:55Speaker 3: too much way.
- 49:55Speaker 7: I want him to give things away. He can talk
- 49:57Speaker 7: about what he wants to talk about. But I think
- 49:59Speaker 7: Joe Manchin is in a unique position to be able
- 50:03Speaker 7: to espouse as a former senator, as a former governor,
- 50:08Speaker 7: and to be able to do so in a clear
- 50:12Speaker 7: tone that is free of political ambition. He's not running
- 50:17Speaker 7: for anything, so whether you want to call him a
- 50:20Speaker 7: party elder or just an elder because he's not in
- 50:23Speaker 7: a party anymore, I think there are lessons and he
- 50:27Speaker 7: has learned those lessons over time, and there are opinions
- 50:30Speaker 7: that he can share based on his experience that are
- 50:33Speaker 7: applicable to the things that we're facing today. And I
- 50:35Speaker 7: think that's what he's going to continue to do. I
- 50:37Speaker 7: think that's what he'll do tomorrow on talk Line, and
- 50:39Speaker 7: I think he'll continue to do that not only in
- 50:41Speaker 7: West Virginia, but at a national stage. He was great
- 50:44Speaker 7: on News Nation in that roundtable.
- 50:46Speaker 3: That they did.
- 50:46Speaker 7: Oh yeah, So I think when you have someone who
- 50:50Speaker 7: can speak freely and not be bothered by whether or
- 50:54Speaker 7: not they need to be re elected or what they're
- 50:57Speaker 7: going to do next, I think that's insightful.
- 50:59Speaker 3: I think we should listen, all right, what you got
- 51:00Speaker 3: on the show today.
- 51:01Speaker 7: So coming up ten o six, Roger Hanshaw is going
- 51:04Speaker 7: to be on the show. That ambitious agenda that he
- 51:05Speaker 7: laid out yesterday. We're going to talk about that. I
- 51:07Speaker 7: have a few questions I want to pose. Uh Charlotte
- 51:10Speaker 7: Lane from the PSC you know, she was in front
- 51:12Speaker 7: of lawmakers at interims and said we're not going to
- 51:15Speaker 7: close coal fired power plants. We're going to get into
- 51:17Speaker 7: that issue with her. Uh, Joe bro is back. He's
- 51:22Speaker 7: going to stop buying Metro News Player of the Year.
- 51:24Speaker 7: We're going to outline that as well. So that and
- 51:26Speaker 7: a whole much more on today's show. And he votes
- 51:29Speaker 7: for Joe bro to be the Metro News Player of
- 51:30Speaker 7: the Year. You know, he ought to be after that
- 51:32Speaker 7: hit he took.
- 51:34Speaker 3: A little tumble during the they're in the state championship
- 51:36Speaker 3: the other day.
- 51:37Speaker 7: Yeah, and you know what, just like the hardest working
- 51:40Speaker 7: man in sports broadcasting, he comes back and wants to
- 51:44Speaker 7: do the game.
- 51:44Speaker 3: And the hotel he went back, He went back to
- 51:47Speaker 3: the stadium to pick up his equipment and then went
- 51:50Speaker 3: back to the hotel and watched it and was still
- 51:52Speaker 3: pumping out stories, uh you know from the hotel room.
- 51:54Speaker 3: So well, you know what, that's that's how the old
- 51:56Speaker 3: school guys do it, man, That's the way we do it,
- 51:58Speaker 3: all right.
- 51:59Speaker 5: DJ Medows and Dave also coming up with Metro News
- 52:01Speaker 5: talk Line at ten oh six. I'll be back on
- 52:03Speaker 5: this show tomorrow and I'll see you later today on
- 52:05Speaker 5: Metro News, Midday with thirteen News and Tonight Live. Anchor
- 52:07Speaker 5: Manda Baron had me till then, have fun and love
- 52:09Speaker 5: somebody
