Black Hawk helicopters from the Minnesota National Guard are dropping water on raging wildfires in the Superior National Forest, their speed and massive capacity making a critical difference. Crews work in tandem—pilots fly, ground crew guide, and even lean out the doors to spot flames. Equipped for rescue in remote Boundary Waters, they’ve stayed on the ground since arriving July 13, with many guardsmen leaving families and jobs to fight fires.
